A BIG MAC WOULD BE REALLY BIG
A BIG MAC WOULD BE REALLY BIG
You probably already know that the name ‘Penpho’ is a combination of the words ‘pencil’ and ‘photography’. And in a word, that’s what we do: we take pictures and draw! Of course, it’s a little more complicated than that. Each Penpho is an intense process. We will try to describe our working method in a step-by-step guide. That way, you can try to make your very own Penphos. It takes some time and creativity, but it is certainly worth it.

Take some pictures of the idea you have in mind. Use a good camera with a powerful lens; you need high-quality pictures. Try to record the scene with great precision. Consider the setting, the lighting, the shadows, the clothing of the people in the picture… everything needs to be perfect! A useful tip: don’t just take one picture. Take at least ten pictures for each Penpho you want to make. Graphics! First make a print-out of the best photo in A4-size and give it a close look. Where exactly can you create a transition between the photo and the drawing? Then take some drawing paper and start to draw. Do a few try-outs in pencil and finish the final drawing with a black pen. It is not unusual to have to redo a drawing a few times before it looks good…
This is the most important and most difficult step! Each Penpho starts with an idea. So use your imagination, be creative, brainstorm, collect ideas and try to come up with a striking image. Draw inspiration from current events, look around and use your imagination. Remember: creating a Penpho is a little like creating your own world…
So you’ve had a good idea. How can you achieve it? How can you present it in one powerful image? You’d better think it through first… We had lots of good ideas before we started working on this book, but we dropped a dozen as they were too difficult to visualize.
This is the real magic. First scan your best drawing. Use a good high-resolution scanner to convert it into an image file. Use software such as Adobe Photoshop or Coreldraw to combine the two files and to create the image you had in mind. Pay special attention to the place where the drawing and the photo merge into one another. The drawing has to be fully integrated into the picture, otherwise it’s not a good Penpho! Experiment and learn. Be critical of yourself. If you’re satisfied, then show your Penpho to your friends and family. Listen attentively to their opinion, criticism and tips. Your next Penpho will be even better! Post your Penphos online and find out what other people think!
