I feel weird talking about my drawings because for me it’s not about my drawings, for me it’s always really about the connection I’m able to have with someone and getting to work with someone who is taking some form of reclamation of their body.

Brat’s tattoo’s are easy to spot with their bold use of colour and their whimsical, fantasy landscapes. They have been making art since they were a child, initially in an arts high school and then majoring in painting and fibre arts in college. Brat’s drawings change over time, they try not to stick to a plan, but instead their designs develop as they draw, allowing them to maintain a sense of the imagined. It’s not a surprise that Brat lists cartoons, video games and surrealism as some of their many influences. Their designs have a playfulness and surreal abstraction to them which seems to give them a sense of motion on the body. For Brat, when tattooing, the most important aspect is consent and collaborative, healthy communication, as a means to ease the client, have fun and yield the best results.

JULIM ROSA

Julim Rosa is most known for her distinctive style of distorted text and compositions of bold, black gradients, and use of negative space and solid black. To improve the experience for both her and the sitter, Julim has set some boundaries when working. After a bad experience with colour, Julim only works with vegan black ink, she also sees the experience as a collaboration between herself and the sitter, and will only work

on one person a day, giving them both the amount of time needed to get the tattoo just right. Julim sees her practice as a meeting point between contemporary art and tattooing and as such veers away from text that is only relatable to the sitter, she wants to the tattoo to be considered in the larger context of the human experience and not just specific to one person, pushing forward with the notion that we’re in this life together.

ALIEN POEME

At the core of Alien Poeme’s tattoos is an ethos of compassion for others, and strong roots in feminism. Their designs are naïve with a contemporary, poetic edge, which they like to refer to as ‘emonaïve’. They tend to start a design with a short poem that then turns into something more illustrative, often circling one of their interests which range from mental health and self care to queerness and the imagination.

Embellished with Ciara’s signature design aesthetic and a subtle use of colour, their tattoo of a cow is elevated into a place of celebration and respect.
