Radical Renovations Inspiring Architectural Makeovers Edited by Beth Browne Radical Renovations presents more than 50 outstanding examples of adaptive reuse in residential and commercial architecture, wherein existing buildings have been dramatically transformed with truly stunning results. For many of these remarkable remodels the architects have utilised the principles of environmentally sustainable development in their designs, highlighting the importance of repurposing and sustainable building. This ultimate act of recycling can provide environmental and aesthetic benefits. Many architects and designers

are making conscientious and creative use of available resources to minimise demolition and waste while delivering cost savings, style and sustainability. The projects featured range from drastic yet respectful remodels of heritage buildings to major modernist makeovers and downsized-yet-upgraded spaces for empty nesters. In locations as diverse as Japan, the UK, Spain, Australia, the USA and Italy, each radical renovation breathes new life and function into an existing structure – often in astonishingly innovative ways.

An extensive remodel for a couple whose children had left home, this project incorporated the reduction of building area and a drastic update of the design to meet the clients’ desire for a modern building. The existing 4000-square-foot building appeared massive from the street, and was often mistaken for an apartment building. The existing building was remodelled to provide a strong relationship between the building and its site, views and orientation, where formerly there was none, while meeting the strict development standards of the governing agencies. Utilising as much of the existing conditions as possible, the reorganisation of the building is centred on a flowing series of spaces flooded with natural light. To meet the governing conditions, the south wall of the ground floor was maintained and the second-floor volume was shifted to the north to create a continuous 60-foot-long skylight that floods the once-dark living spaces with natural light. The second-floor volume continues this idea by stepping again to create a clerestory window line that directs natural light

into the bedroom suites. The building’s massing at street level was reduced and new materials were employed to create choreographed views of the city and ocean in the distance. A planar-type massing was created to define how and where the exterior views are found. Editing out less-desirable views, the building creates sightlines that open from one point and are closed from another to maximise the possible views and interaction of the building with the site. The wall, ceiling and roof planes extend out to delineate views and create a play of solid and void. The material palette of the building is derived from the nature of the surrounding community. Bound by an oil refinery to the south and Los Angeles International Airport to the north, the City of El Segundo holds its industrial roots close to its heart. Rusted steel and dark grey stucco create solid planes, while light escapes from the voids created by the clean and simple aluminium window system.
