LALU HOTEL & MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT Nanjing, China
Touching the Yangtze River, the 5-hectare site stands at the end of the east-west axis of the historic Nanjing city, symbolically and figuratively embodying a “gateway” from the urban contex t to the majestic waterway. Respecting this mergence of grand entities, the building is set 100 metres from the riverbank allowing for the landscape to bridge the structured and the untamed. Drawing inspiration from a traditional Chinese imperial palace, symmetry is employed star ting from the grand arrival, through the building’s mirrored internal courtyards, and culminating with a monumental reflecting water body that visually merges with the Yangtze. This central reflecting pool is surrounded by a number of intimate spaces, such as smaller courtyards, meditative dry gardens, quiet pavilions, and surreal bamboo forests that aid in softening the large formal gesture. Sculptural trees, large ar tworks, elongated hedges and pathways accentuate the framed views of the river. Topography is manipulated with structured and organic terracing to shape private recessed seating and serene borrowed landscapes.

THE SANYA EDITION Hainan, China
This development is situated along the tropical coastline of Haitang Bay on Hainan Island. More than just a hotel, the 19.5 hectare site also accommodates privately owned villas, conference facilities, restaurants, swimming pools and other leisure amenities. These elements are organised around an impressive central water feature, the Private Ocean – a man-made lagoon separated from the South China Sea by the beach. Throughout the project, SCDA’s design explores different ways of linking the Ocean with the architecture. In front of the hotel building’s lobby, the Ocean Promenade steps up from the shore in a series of curved terraces, following the site’s topography, and creating a green amphitheatre. Smaller programmatic elements, such as the private villas and F&B outlets, are placed along a private beach, or hang directly above the Ocean’s waters; elsewhere, timber decks and private pools create a more gradual transition between indoors and outdoors.
