AVONDALE RESIDENCE The Avondale Residence is a single-family home in the Turtle Creek neighborhood of Dallas. It is constructed on an irregularly shaped, 8075-square-foot (750-squaremeter) site of significant typography. The size and shape of the site, as well as the presence of a grand oak tree, presented challenges that greatly influenced the design process. The clients wanted a home from which they could work, entertain friends and family, and accommodate overnight guests. In order to merge indoor and outdoor, expand usable living space and cater to the clients lifestyle needs, the architects opted for a courtyard-focused design. This design, while essentially blind from the street, expands into an intimate, urban courtyard. Communication between indoors and outdoors is enhanced through the use of large, sliding glass doors, which can be fully concealed when opened. With the doors fully open and retracted, the indoor-living area and courtyard are converted into a space of unity.

Defining interior materials include: concrete floors on the ground level, wood floors on the second level, painted drywall walls and ceilings, and statuary white marble countertops. The home’s exterior has been rendered in exposed, cast-in-place concrete, hard troweled stucco and a rain screen of Roman travertine.

BROOKVIEW RESIDENCE Drawing inspiration from modern boutique resorts, this Smitharc-designed home embodies a sense of ‘coming home to vacation.’ Located in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas, its open-plan layout combines interior and exterior living; cozy enough for a family of four but grand enough for frequent entertaining. Panoramic glass walls reveal a warm palette of Texas fossil stone and natural woods, giving the home a comfortable balance of drama and repose.

The kitchen and large covered porches create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. The entrance gallery/piano hall was specifically designed to welcome large numbers of guests with live music and cocktails.

The clients were very specific in expressing their vision for the project. They wanted a unique and progressive home, reflective of their personalities. The design was tailored to the site, working around and maximizing location of all existing trees. While it is a considerably sized home, purpose-built for large gatherings, the footprint maintains a sizable distance from the required setbacks on all sides, in respect of the existing fabric of the neighborhood. The plan also wraps around the lot rather than occupying the center, thus creating a courtyard feel in the home’s center and enhancing its connection to the outdoors, while maintaining privacy. Large expanses of glass have been used liberally but carefully located by solar orientation and shaded by mature live oaks or large overhangs. Equal attention has been paid to the home’s intricacies, such as the patterning of the custom carved entry door, which was inspired by the architectural floor plan.
