THE PLANT DOCTOR How do you deal with day-to-day problems? 1. The bottom leaves turn yellow and fall off: g Allow the soil to dry thoroughly, then give the plant less water from that point on. 2. Leaves are hanging limp and drying out: g Give the plant more water. 3. Leaves are hanging limp and drying out, even though you water it sufficiently: g Put the plant in a less draughty spot, or in a higher spot farther from the cold floor. 4. Leaves are developing brown edges: g Place the plant closer to the window or in a different spot that receives more light. 5. Leaves have yellow or brown patches: g Place your plants farther from the window or in a spot that’s less sunny. 6. Leaves suddenly fall off: g Place the plant in a spot that has no draught or has a constant temperature. 7. Brightly coloured leaves turn green and the pattern fades: g Provide more daylight for the plant to restore the coloured pattern. 8. Plant hardly grows, or does not grow at all: g During growth period or in the Spring, provide more daylight for the plant or put the plant in a larger pot. 9. The potting soil is turning white on top: g Give rainwater and replace the top layer of soil. 10. Leaves develop white patches: g Check for insect infestation. 11. Leaves curl up or develop holes: g Check for insect infestation. - 249 -
