Skins
Gavin Watson
Gavin Watson
Originally published in 1994, Skins by Gavin Watson is arguably the single most important record of ‘70s skinhead culture in Britain. Rightly celebrated as a true classic of photobook publishing, the book is now reissued in a high-quality new edition under close supervision from the photographer. The scores of black and white shots offer a fascinating glimpse into a skinhead community that was multi-cultural, tightly knit and, above all else, fiercely proud of its look. These are classic photographs of historical value.
The book, described by The Times as “a modern classic”, forms an important visual record of its time and has attained cult status in the genre, alongside works by other eminent photographers such as Derek Ridgers and Nick Knight.

England: The Last Hurrah Dafydd Jones
Throughout the 1980s, award-winning photographer Dafydd Jones was granted access to some of England’s most exclusive upper-class events. Now, the author of Oxford: The Last Hurrah presents this irreverent and intimate portrait of birthday parties and charity balls, Eton picnics and private school celebrations. With the crack of a hunting rifle and a spray of champagne, these photos give an almost cinematic account of high-society England at its most riotous and its most vulnerable. Against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, globalization, the Falklands War, rising stocks and dwindling inherited fortunes, Jones reveals the inner lives of the established elite as they party long into the night-time of their fading world.

Mississippi Dream Larry Niehues, Brooks Hall
Mississippi Dream is French photographer Larry Niehues’ second book following Nothing Has Changed, his ‘love letter to America’. For this book, Niehues chose to go deeper into his fascination with the Delta region of the United States and focus on the great Mississippi river. In this passionate exploration inside the culture of the Deep South, Niehues captures aspects of the storied river far beyond landscapes and blue skies. These are images that were taken throughout 2020 & 2021 while confronting a pandemic, as well as major flooding that deeply affected the states along the lower Mississippi river. This raw and passionate body of work captures a range of moments; from epic performances by Blues legends at iconic local juke joints, to more intimate settings. It documents century-old Baptist traditions and everyday life in what is often referred to as ‘The Most Southern Place on Earth.’ The photographs tell a story that feels both nostalgic and surreal, and is sure to inspire a deep sense of what life is like in the Delta South.

The Golden Age of Photojournalism Russell Melcher
Today, photography is part of everyday life for the vast majority of people — digital, fast, and fleeting. But in the mid-20th century, it was a completely different story; photographers viewed themselves as authors and entertainers. Russell Melcher was one of the greats — in this volume, he shows us his most impressive pictures while telling us his best stories.
He followed the beautiful, the rich, the famous, and the powerful around the globe, chronicling their lives. The Windsors, Romy Schneider, Elvis Presley, Fidel Castro, and the Shah of Iran have all appeared in front of his camera.
As European Director at Magnum and then Photo Editor at Paris Match, he later worked with such photography legends as Robert Capa and Elliott Erwitt, shaping the character of the style-setting photo agency.

Coolness
The Pure Elegance of Freedom
Michael Köckritz
Black jazz musicians of the 1930s and 1940s are attributed with first using ‘cool’ as slang, and it was quickly adopted by teenagers. Nowadays the word is ubiquitous — and vaguely refers to anything that is considered laid-back or trendy. But what does it actually mean, how does “coolness” become something tangible? What makes it so appealing?
Michael Kockritz uses a comprehensive approach to explore these questions by talking to experts, iconic figures, and famous faces, and researching history and stories.
He makes an impressive argument for coolness as a timeless, modern, emotional experience and self-confident attitude that lives off the appeal of not fitting in, while simultaneously captivating us with its markedly aesthetic dimension

Siam & China Through the Lens of John Thomson
Edited by Betty Yao, Narisa Chakrabongse
The range, depth and aesthetic quality of John Thomson’s photographic vision mark him out as one of the most important travel photographers. Thomson arrived in Siam in 1865 and with the help of the British Consul in Bangkok, he was able to gain an audience with King Mongkut who granted him permission to take some formal portraits of the King, his royal family and chief ministers, as well as recording important ceremonies and traveling to Ayutthaya, Petchaburi and the surrounding countryside. Thomson became the first photographer to document Angkor Wat before returning to London. Between 1868-1872 Thomson turned his attention to China, making extensive trips to Guangdon, Fujian, Beijing and China’s northeast traveling down the Yangtze river and covering nearly 5,000 miles. His collection of over 600 glass negatives forms a unique archive of images, which are today housed in the Wellcome Library, London.
Green Namibia Patricia Parinejad
After Green Mallorca, the first successful volume of the Green series at teNeues, photographer Patricia Parinejad has traveled to Namibia to capture in impressive photographs the work of a number of environmental projects, sustainability initiatives, green hotels, lodges and camps, conservation and research programmes and local producers, farmers and craftsmen. Together with poetic as well as informative texts this has resulted in the extraordinary illustrated book Green Namibia. A book for and about inspiring people who are helping to keep the green movement going by working towards more sustainable operations of their hotels, protecting wildlife, producing locally, promoting biodiversity and reducing their carbon footprint at the same time. Patricia Parinejad highlights how we can reconnect to the natural world with a sense of awe for Namibia, its deserts and plains.
Barbara Cole Between Worlds
Barbara Cole
Canadian Barbara Cole’s artwork is collected by public and private institutions and has been exhibited worldwide. Cole, who is often referred to as an inventor, uses a raw, hands-on photographic process that is consistent with her belief that the possibilities of photography are virtually limitless.
Over the past 30 years, although she works with traditional photographic means, Cole’s approach and aesthetic has become closer to that of a painter. The artist’s work focuses on a powerful narrative, some with external motifs and others with intense figure transformations that alone tell the story. Cole’s background in fashion and fashion editorial naturally leads to a process that channels her experience into creating a particular atmosphere with costumes and backdrops.

New York Unseen
Luc Kordas
Like the first part of the Unseen series (London Unseen), New York Unseen is an authentic approach to the character of a world metropolis. It is the first illustrated book that attempts to capture the soul of the Big Apple without focusing on tourist highlights such as the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. Instead, Luc Kordas focuses on intimate encounters with the protagonists of the East Coast metropolis: its residents. Embedded in their ‘natural habitat,’ the mostly black-and-white images of people from the city’s streets, backyards, apartments, or trains often tell much more than the 1,000th image of the Empire State Building could. The result is a photographic smorgasbord of looks, gestures, situations that capture the soul of New York.

Berlin Unseen
Martin U. Waltz
Berlin Unseen is, like the first two parts of the Unseen series (London Unseen and New York Unseen), an authentic approach to the character of the German capital. At the same time, the images by Martin U. Waltz breathe the atmosphere of the metropolis on the Spree as authentically as few others. The star photographer of the German street photography scene has always been close to the pulse of the city. Yet it is not the city’s tourist highlights that interest Martin U. Waltz. It is the streets and the faces of the ‘real’ Berlin, the hidden architecture, the backyards, party basements and subcultures of the city. His images smell and taste of Berlin, and not (only) of the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag and TV Tower. Berlin Unseen thus becomes a photographic smorgasbord of glances, gestures, situations that capture the soul of Berlin.

A Series of Glances Andy Summers
Since the 1970s, Andy Summers has been one of the great guitarists of his generation as the guitarist of The Police and achieved worldwide fame alongside singer Sting, but also later as a solo artist. These are images full of poetry and mood, mostly in black and white, with which Andy takes us into his world: on his extensive travels through the cultures of different countries and continents, to his portrait and nude photography, whose focus is always on the artistic moment. A Series of Glances becomes perhaps Andy Summer’s most personal work ever.
The Police guitarist Andy Summers is not only still on the road as a musician, but is known internationally as an art photographer. In A Series of Glances, he now collects his best photographs from several decades for the first time in a large, lavishly designed illustrated book.

Eye Mama Poetic Truths of Home and Motherhood Karni Arieli
During the 2020 lockdown, photographer and BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Karni Arieli began documenting her family in pictures. Others did the same, and so the idea for a major international photography project was born. Mothers grabbed their cameras, and Karni decided to start a visual movement. The motivation was complex: to find comfort, to find an occupation that is fulfilling through photography as an art form, to be able to communicate to others without words and feel solidarity, to share everyday life, which can be lonely despite being turbulent. In mid-April 2021, Karni started an Instagram feed called EYE MAMA. The community of artistic mothers quickly grew to over 4,000 and counting. Out of anonymity, this created an unstoppable movement that is now being channelled into a book.

Greenhouses
Cathedrals for Plants
Werner Pawlok
Botanical gardens represent people’s centuries-old fascination with exotic plants. Werner Pawlok has photographically explored special tropical greenhouses within Europe and shows us here his most beautiful pictures in his usual colorfully expressive manner - from the Palm House in the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen, to Kew Gardens in London, and the Great Palm House at Schönbrunn. The scent of the warm earth and the breath of the plants can almost be felt when looking at the large-format and colorful pictures. Fascinating interplays of color allow the filigree architecture of famous master builders and the impressive plants to shine in a special light. Pawlok, self-taught and intuitive photographer, captures these magical places in a fascinating way. Each photo is a work of art in itself. Interesting texts about the cultural history of greenhouses, from the simple wooden construction to the efficient glass dome, accompany this extraordinary photo book.

Global Ikat The World of Compelling Cloth
Rosemary Crill
Deceptively simple or fantastically intricate, ikat technique has been used for many centuries to create extravagant costumes and cloths of deep cultural meaning. The distinctively blurred, feathered or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found across much of the world - from Japan in the east to Central and South America in the west, with vast areas of South-east Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East in between. The traditional patterns still hold cultural relevance today in significant parts of the long-established ikat-weaving areas. Textile artists and fashion designers in many and varied countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while creatively diverging from them. This is the first time all the different iterations of this textile have been comprehensively brought together in one volume, drawing from the wide-ranging collection of David Paly.
Tennis The Ultimate Book
Peter Feierabend, Stefan Maiwald
Formerly reserved for the elite, tennis has become a popular sport over the years. And even if you don’t play yourself, the tennis lifestyle exerts a certain fascination. It’s not uncommon at Grand Slams like Wimbledon to find it more interesting who’s watching from the stands than who’s down on the court. However, famous tennis personalities are also a source of conversation - just remember John McEnroe’s infamous outbursts. This, the ultimate tennis book is dedicated to the stories on and off the court, it explains the history of the sport, shows the most important courts and tournaments, the most exciting competitions and legendary athletes. Tennis fashion and equipment are also covered, and who knows, maybe after reading this entertaining tennis compendium you will feel the need to pick up a racket.

Enchanted Land Foreign Writings About Chiang
Mai in the Early 20th Century
Graham Jefcoate
A century ago, northern Thailand (or Siam as it was then known) was home to small communities of Westerners, many of them British diplomats and foresters or American missionaries. Though few in number, they left behind a considerable written legacy. This book makes a selection of that writing accessible to a wide readership, much of it for the first time. The texts are illustrated by 65 evocative photographs, many of them contemporary.

Urban Oasis Parks and Green Projects around the World
Jessica Jungbauer
It’s probably not just since the pandemic that city dwellers have realized what a luxury a park nearby is. But climate change is threatening these idyllic places in the middle of the noisy, particularlypolluted big city. Innovative projects and forward-thinking urban planners are seeking to remedy the situation in order to equip growing cities for the future and make them liveable. Urban Oasis is devoted to 20 green projects for better city life, covering topics such as the slow flower movement, the agricultural use of urban roofs, the greening of former industrial sites and the restoration of listed parks. From New York’s High Line to Paris’s Plein air organic flower farm to Berlin’s neo-baroque Körnerpark, the parks and projects featured in this visually stunning book are all inspiring.
The Cyclades Greek Island Paradise
Rudi Sebastian
The first comprehensive illustrated book on the Cyclades archipelago, which also includes the well-known islands of Santorini, Naxos, Paros and Mykonos. The islands are currently among the trendiest travel destinations in the world. This illustrated book doesn’t focus on the big tourist hotspots and Instagram highlights that can be seen everywhere else, but captures the Greek island world as a whole. Lonely bays and half-ruined towns stand next to the glossy world of the rich and famous who spend the summer on the islands. Highlife in summer next to almost deserted streets in winter. Greek tradition next to modern mass tourism. It is precisely these discrepancies that make the volume so distinctive. Rudi Sebastian has spent many weeks on the islands over several years in all seasons and has followed the soul of the country and its people.

a+u 2022:11 Special Feature: 33 Japanese Teahouses
Edited by A+U Publishing
This special issue features teahouses by Sen no Rikyu and Kobori Enshu, considered classic masterpieces, as well as works in which a rich diversity of morphological expressions were developed between tradition and renewal. The issue also introduces architecture that uses teahouses as a design reference, such as the later sukiya and modern spacial expressions. Thirty-three works are presented here in this volume, 22 of which were newly photographed. The issue presents, in addition to floor plans, number of detailed interior elevations and sections to represent a variety of teahouses. Guest editor Kirisako Kunio’s texts, focused on the idea of “relationship with nature,” describes the appeal of teahouse in a concrete manner that is easy to understand for those new to teahouses culture.
a+u 22:06, 621 Feature: Christian Kerez
Edited
by A+U Publishing
a+u’s June issue is dedicated to the Incidental Space series by Swiss architect Christian Kerez. The result of intense investigations, Incidental Space follows Kerez’s attempts to gauge the potential of ornamental space as a generative device, to seek further liberations and precision in thinking about and defining space. Concepts such as narrative space, fluid space, and atomized space are anthologized here in one of Kerez’s 2 essays. In the other essay, Kerez documents and reflects on his experiences in Baroque architect Francesco Borromini’s canonical buildings, translating them “from the medium of architecture into the medium of language.” Sketches, drawings, and models exhaustively archive the design process of each project, from the testing of concepts to the final form and spatial experience.
a+u 22:07, 622 Feature: Landscape Urbanism in France
Edited by A+U
Publishing
a+u’s July issue features landscape urbanism in France. Since the 1970s, the pioneering generation of Michel Corajoud, Alexandre Chemetoff, Gilles Clément, and Jacques Simon – all profiled on these pages – have brought the modern discipline of landscape architecture in France, and its long insistence on a horticultural approach, into the urban realm. Yet as guest editors Henri Bava and Antoine Picon argue in their introductory essay, this urban turn has its deep origins in agriculture and land management, formal gardens, and the military and civil engineering practices of France’s early modern period, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Featuring 6 canonical works by the pioneers, alongside 17 projects that represent current trends, the issue explores the evolution of a discipline.

Feature: 6a architects
Edited by A+U
Publishing
a+u’s August issue features the work of 6a architects, founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001 and based in London’s historic Holborn district. Deeply immersed in the British art and design scene, and in the cohort of British architects who came of age in the post–high tech 1990s, 6a are at the forefront of a contemporary movement characterized by sensitivity to the environment, community, and context, while appearing to play down conventional signatures of style and theory. Divided among 4 chapters –“Repairing,” “Gardening,” “Shaping,” “Walking” – 20 projects present themselves as invitations to distinct experiences.

Feature: Grafton Architects
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s September issue features Grafton Architects, founded in 1978 by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. Rooted in their home city of Dublin, where topography, street life, literature, language, and people are deeply interconnected, the work of Grafton appears “drawn out of something subterranean... richly layered as physical constructs and as cultural interventions,” as described by literary critic Finton O’Toole in his commentary. This monograph highlights 25 projects. In addition to guest commentaries are 2 short pieces by Grafton that marked pivotal moments in the firm’s early half-century career and remain perennially germane to their design philosophy: an allegory about human habitat and environment drafted 27 years ago as a proposal for a competition, and a manifesto posing as a question to colleagues for the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Feature: Charles
Rennie Mackintosh
Edited
by A+U Publishing
a+u’s October issue features the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, born in 1868, in Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow grew rapidly into a modern industrialized city in the latter half of the 1800s. With this urban development came a generation of students from Glasgow School of Art, including Mackintosh and his close associates known as The Four, who started creating designs and artworks from an entirely new vantage point. As detailed in an essay by guest editor Hiroaki Kimura, Mackintosh enriched traditional architectural composition through his advocacy of the “philosophy of craft,” which brought together craft and engineering. In their distance from historicist styles and pursuit of a new environmental aesthetic, these activities paralleled other movements in continental Europe at the turn of the 20th century. This issue showcases 15 built works by Mackintosh through lavish displays of archival drawings and historical photographs.

a+u 22:11, 626 Feature: Berlin
Edited by A+U Publishing
a+u’s November issue features the most recent wave of construction in Berlin. 32 years have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall – a period longer than the life of the wall itself – and the city has entered a new phase of normalization, with the genre, styles, and values of architecture being decidedly different from those of the post-Reunification euphoria. While a+u 16:08 provides a comprehensive index to the landmarks of Berlin from Schinkel to the postReunification construction boom, this issue highlights 14 recent works that range from the restoration of Neues Museum to the conversion of an abandoned grocery store in the former East Berlin into a residence. A series of thematic essays, on Museum Island, on Schinkelplatz, on the Tempelhof site, on building groups, underscore the complexities and challenges in this transformative process.

Archea Associati: Antinori Winery Diary of Building a New Landscape
Laura Andreini, text by Piero
Antinoria and Marco
Casamonti
This updated fourth edition of a classic book shows the Antinori Winery, located in the extraordinary hilly landscape covered by the vineyards of Chianti, halfway between Florence and Siena. The client required a building that enhanced the surrounding landscape and territory, and bore witness to the cultural and social valence of the places where wine is made. The conceptual theme of the project has taken the form of a shell that is wholly below ground, without roofs, walls, streets and parking spaces, according to a design which attempts a difficult but necessary reconcilement between the natural and the artificial. Hundreds of photographs have immortalized years of work on the site, telling the story of all the phases that have made it possible to realize this extraordinary project.

CMF Design The Fundamental Principles of Colour Material Finish
Liliana Becerra
In this first book about the rather young discipline, the author consolidated its key principles, so that they can be consulted, referenced and utilized by both design students and professionals. Only when the perfect balance between visual beauty and functional performance is achieved, can a product provide a consistent and successful user experience. The discipline of CMF design focuses on designing and specifying colors, materials and finishes to support both functional and emotional attributes of products. From a marketing perspective, CMF design is a valuable tool when it comes to positioning products, collections and categories according to market tiers and consumer segmentations. Introducing the CMF process and detailing the areas of color, material and finished design, this book serves as a valuable source of information about this emerging professional discipline and its fundamental principles.
Fashion Spaces A Theoretical View
Edited by Vésma Kontere McQuillan
This book sets out to define fashion spaces as an emerging area of research within architectural writing. Social media has brought a new type of space into the world of fashion retail. When architecture and fashion meet in the creation of ephemeral spaces for the immediate presentation of new collections, for example, these temporary but real spaces are brought into the realm of the everlasting digital space as they are shared and re-shared on platforms like Instagram. Fashion spaces can best be defined, then, as co-created, ever changing and prevailing metaspaces where the dialog amongst designers, consumers and industry leaders continues well after the real space has vanished. The book is created via a practice-oriented approach to academic teaching and research, through the collaboration of academics, students and the retail industry.
Holistic Retail Design Reshaping Shopping for the Digital Era Professor Philipp

It covers stationary, temporary and digital customer touchpoints and intermediates between the consumer, the retail brand and the products being offered. The theory shapes spaces, platforms, events, interfaces, signage and communications, expanding scope whilst introducing retail archetypes linking to customer role models.

Hybrid Food Retail Rethinking Design for the Experiential Turn
Bernhard Franken, Alina Cymera
This handbook prescribes hybridization – a fusion of gastronomy, co-working, hospitality and performative formats – as a powerful remedy against the digital disruption of the food retail industry. Online shopping and changing consumer demands radically transform the food retail industry for the first time since the introduction of the supermarket in the 1930s. After decades of stagnation, food retail is currently one of the most creative and fastest developing typologies in spatial design. As a result of a three-year research project with over 100 students of retail design at PBSA Peter Behrens School of Arts, University of Applied Sciences Dusseldorf, Hybrid Food Retail offers an overview of the history, presents an encyclopedic analysis of the elements, and highlights the emerging trends in the food retail industry.

Spaces for Innovation The Design and Science of Inspiring Environments
Kursty Groves, Oliver Marlow
A research-based book about the relationship between the physical design of working environments and levels of creativity and innovation. Spaces for Innovation explains the relationship between the physical design of working environments and levels of creativity and innovation. Based on the available evidence, Spaces for Innovation identifies the physical characteristics of workspaces that are associated with high innovation potential and determine why they have an effect. A basic framework for the design of innovative environments, a ‘pattern language’ and a practical tool in this book, can be used in analyzing ways to enhance physical space in the pursuit of innovation. The book acts as a pattern guide, providing context, examples, inspiration and direction to help businesses explore and understand organizational challenges.

Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum
Zhu Pei
Zhu Pei’s Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum recalls a time of glory of the once “Millenium Porcelain Capital” city, Jingdezhen, and extends these memories to the present. Inspired by the perception of Jingdezhen’s specific regional culture (porcelain) and the survival wisdom of the locals, the museum is a symbol of the past and future. The contemporary architecture magnificently resonates the ages: the building form is reminiscent of ancient traditional brick kilns. Colored photos, drawings, essays, and interviews provide detailed insights on the conception of the museum as well as the architect’s personal perspectives on the overall concept and intention of the museum. The pages also feature commentaries on the museum by wellknown architects, including Steven Holl, Kenneth Frampton, Mohsen Mostafavi, Rem Koolhaas, and Arata Isozaki.

Architekt Krischanitz Die Schweizer Projekte
Roger Huwyler, Anne-Marie Kristokat
Adolf Krischanitz is undoubtedly considered one of the most important representatives of the vibrant and widely regarded Viennese architectural scene in the 1980s and 1990s. A key work in the oeuvre of Krischanitz is the project Quai Zurich Campus, the headquarters of the Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) on Mythenquai, which opened in 2021. It is also the final project implemented by Krischanitz’s Zurich branch. This book presents the hitherto unpublished project in detail, using plans and extensive series of images to shed light on Krischanitz’s architectural stance, which is based on creating something new from existing structures, as well as an inherent, deeprooted cultural responsibility. The design approach is demonstrated with examples from distinct thematic fields and illustrated with construction details and quotes.

Carlos Martinez
Edited by Heinz Wirz
Carlos Martinez has been running his architectural office in Berneck for over 30 years. He made a name for himself through his collaboration with Pipilotti Rist entitled “roter Teppich von St. Gallen” (“red carpet of St. Gallen”), a wonderful urban-planning intervention that brings together the formerly haphazard conglomerate of remnant spaces and transport functions to create a homogeneous, identity-strengthening unity. His great energy and inventive engagement with the urban-planning context and its existing structures have led to numerous architectural projects that integrate themselves as powerful figures in the urban context and landscape.
East - London
Edited by Heinz Wirz
Since 1995, the office’s co-founder Julian Lewis and his team have produced numerous buildings, urban-planning master plans and landscape-architectural projects. They are especially interested in spaces where people work and live. Among their many major housing developments, schools and administrative buildings, the Frampton Park Estate housing project includes sophisticated, powerful buildings with a large, oval inner courtyard, providing centralized access to a diverse range of apartments via internal walkways.
Hotel Palace Lucerne Refurbishment of a listed building
Iwan Bühler, Cony Grünenfelder, Peter Omachen
In 1906, the Hotel Palace was built along Lucerne’s prominent Quai Promenade according to plans by Heinrich Meili-Wapf – one of the most important Lucerne architects of the time. The mighty building is regarded as one of the most important Swiss hotel developments of its time, both due to its pioneering construction and building technology, and due to its architectural design. The building was carefully and comprehensively renewed by the Lucernebased architect Iwan Bühler between 2018 and 2022, taking aspects of monument preservation into account. This demanded ideally preserving the existing building fabric, while revealing and reproducing the building’s often differentiated and subtle qualities, as well as the wealth of the original building. The work also included carefully renewing individual elements inside and outside the building to accommodate current utilization.

Since 1987, Eileen Joy Liebman and Fernando Villavecchia have produced a series of diverse projects from their studio in Barcelona, Spain, with an emphasis on residential architecture and the renovation of historic buildings in a range of rural and urban contexts. Mikou Studio – Paris
Edited by Heinz Wirz
The twin sisters Selma Mikou and Salwa Mikou founded their own Paris office in 2006 – after working for many years for Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano. Each project primarily aims to liberate itself from preconceived forms in order to create original solutions that focus on the dimension of an emotional spatial experience. The architects have produced numerous prominent buildings in this way, including the Balsanéo Aquatics Center in Châteauroux (2021), which was developed as a dynamic figure that spans the boulevard like a bridge to overlook the unique landscape of the Indre region.
Tom Munz
Edited by Heinz Wirz
Tom Munz established his St. Gallen office in 2013. Since then, he has produced a number of extremely high-quality buildings that are always developed with a special interest in structural and tectonic expression. For instance, Wohnhaus Holzenstein in Romanshorn is a design inspired by Modernism, thriving on the interaction between reserved, beige-stained concrete wall surfaces and wooden window elements to achieve an extremely poetic radiance.

Early Painting in the Northern Netherlands Style and Technique
Arie
Wallert
This volume, published in association with the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), contains the results of research by scientists, conservators and art historians into the materials and techniques of early paintings from the Northern Netherlands in the museum’s collection. In order to investigate the materials used by the artists, including the provenance of the materials and the methods of preparation and application, 14 paintings and frames were examined. Information on the panels, grounds, underdrawings, pigments, oils, diluents etc. are explored in relation to the descriptions in mediaeval texts and treatises. This richly illustrated book gives a clear understanding of the lost skills, forgotten materials, and technical secrets of medieval painting - a world so different from ours - thereby making the materials and methods of the medieval past less foreign to us.

Per Fronth Evolution of Melancholy
Edited by Cecilie Tyri Holt
Per Fronth is one of Norway’s most distinctive contemporary artists, dynamically redefining the relationship between painting and photography in influential and innovative works. Painting with photography as his raw material, Fronth’s pictorial universe is captivating, bold, controversial, and seductive. Fronth produces large-format artworks in series and different disciplines that are politically, environmentally, socially, and highly emotionally charged: from the war zones in Afghanistan, to the indigenous peoples’ fight for their own land in the Amazonas region, and back to his own life, in native Norway, where he explores visual narratives of innocence and the coming of age. In his most recent project Fronth creates controversy by introducing paid product placement into his artworks already acquired by museums. In doing so he elevates the discussion as to what art’s value — and the value of art — is.

ROT Therese Hilbert RED
Schmuck 1966–2020 Jewelry
Die Neue Sammlung – The Design Museum
This exhibition catalog for a show at the Neue Sammlung (Design Museum) in Munich documents the first solo show by Swiss jewelry artist Therese Hilbert, former student of Max Fröhlich in Zurich and Hermann Jünger in Munich. It features 250 works, going back 50 years and beginning with her earliest, unknown pieces through to her newest work created in 2020. One of her life-long passions is volcanoes: she has climbed many of them and has used them as a theme in her jewelry design for many years. The sense of heat below the surface of her minimalist designs underlines her passion for the subject. Her work is in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, and Museum of Arts and Design (New York).
The Degas Plasters A New Look at Degas’ Sculpture Gregory Hedberg
In 1955 seventy-four original plasters recording sculptures by Edgar Degas (1834–1917) were moved to the old Valsuani foundry in Paris only to reappear in France in 2004. These plasters are now being published for the first time, presenting new documentary and physical evidence regarding their dating following an in-depth analysis into the condition of Degas’s waxes at the time of his death. Technical and documentary evidence now proves that as many as half of the serialized “Hébrard” Degas bronzes now held in museum and private collections around the world were in fact cast at the Valsuani foundry in the 1950s and 1960s — long after the Hébrard foundry closed in 1935/36. All of the now cleaned 74 Degas plasters are recorded in full color illustrations in this scholarly catalogue raisonné.

Jean Fautrier Critical Catalogue of Paintings
Marie-José Lefort, Konstantina Minou
Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) was a French avant-gardist painter. Influenced by Turner, his style was figurative at first and played with light contrasts. His first paintings were displayed at the Visconti and Fabre galleries in Paris in 1924, where he was noticed by the collector Jeanne Castel. Some years later, his style radically changed and became far more abstract. He began what would be called the “art informel” movement. At the end of World War II, he painted the series of paintings Otages in which he played with the painting material, superimposing layers of paste. In 1960, he received the painting award of the Venice Biennale. This first critical catalog of Jean Fautrier’s paintings (almost 1200) analyzes each of his paintings through technical analysis, reference texts and transcripts of interviews and broadcasts.

Arte e Poesia Bruno Corà, text by Alexandra Zingone
Tornabuoni Art Paris opens 2023 with an exhibition dedicated to the relationship between art and poetry, examining the case of Giuseppe Ungaretti, on the 110th anniversary of his arrival in Paris, a defining moment in his literary career. The catalog, with texts by Alexandra Zingone, literary critic and curator of the exhibition, tackles the analysis of the art of the ‘short century’ with a global view, taking into consideration the constant dialog between the various exponents of the cultural world. Through passages from critical texts by Ungaretti as an interpreter of art, the volume follows the exhibition among the many works by contemporary artists, including Giacomo Balla, Alberto Burri, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Piero Dorazio and others. Throughout his multidisciplinary career, Ungaretti found himself indiscriminately analyzing various genres, including Futurism, Metaphysical, Informalism, Socialist Realism and Expressionism of the Roman School.
Klaus Münch Bruno Corà
This volume presents the artistic career of Klaus Münch through a selection of his work, ahead of an exhibition opening in Spoleto, Italy in October 2023. Born in Freiburg, Germany, after attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, where he graduated in sculpture, he studied in Munich, specializing in painting. Since then, he has chosen to live and work in Italy, where he pursues his personal artistic investigation of the world. His work moves in the fertile furrow between sculpture and painting. Starting from the examples of Mario and Marisa Merz, Gilberto Zorio, Giovanni Anselmo and comparing himself with artists of the same age such as Vittorio Messina and Eduard Winklhofer, Münch analyzes the complex relationship between creation and space, between color and shape. Includes essays by Marco Tonelli, Ivo Iori and the curator Bruno Corà himself.

Marginalia
Edited by Bruno Corà
Four Calabrian artists who trained during the 1970s, four different poetic paths and a communion of intentions. After Marginalia, the first group exhibition held in 1979, their path split across Italy, to reunite in 2021 in an exhibition bearing the same title. Francesco Correggia focused on performances and sitespecific actions, before turning to painting. Luigi Magli is interested in semiotics and the language of art, investigating matter and its expressive possibilities through his ‘personal expressionism’. Rocco Pangaro teaches Artistic Anatomy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catanzaro. His research is wedged in the relationship between the artistic intervention and the place that hosts it. Giovanni Vatrella incorporates reality in his works, showing and concealing it at the same time behind thin canvases. The book highlights the affinities and divergences of these artists. It is accompanied by a rich apparatus of significant archive images.
KMSKA – The Finest Hundred Patrick De Rynck

It is home to an especially varied collection of art that runs to more than 9,000 items: paintings, sculptures, assemblages, drawings and prints from the 14th to the 21st century. Old Flemish masters like Jan van Eyck, Quinten Massys and Peter Paul Rubens feature alongside internationally renowned artists such as Jean Fouquet, Titian, Auguste Rodin and Amedeo Modigliani. The KMSKA also has the world’s largest collections of work by James Ensor and Rik Wouters. This richly illustrated book highlights seven centuries of art, from the Flemish Primitives to conceptual artists. A hundred masterpieces from the permanent collection are presented in detail and discussed in lucid articles that draw on the very latest research by KMSKA’s own in-house scholars.

Boccioni Unpublished Works
Alberto Dambruoso
More than 100 years after his death, the influential Italian Futurist artist Umberto Boccioni continues to surprise scholars and art enthusiasts. This book features 41 paintings, drawings, and one sculpture, which have come to light since the publication of the Catalogo Generale in 2016. This addendum attests to the extraordinary productivity of a career that lasted less than 20 years, yet had an enduring influence on the trajectory of modern art. Included here are preparatory drawings (Boccioni is known to have done studies on paper before picking up his brushes), and previously unpublished finds from abroad. The activity of the Futurists outside of Italy from 1912 to 1915 was extensive, with exhibitions in Paris (1912 and 1913), Berlin (1912 and 1913), London (1912 and 1914) as well as in Brussels (1912), Rotterdam (1913), Leipzig (1914), and San Francisco (1915).

Fondazione Giorgio and Isa de Chirico
Karkhana A Studio in Rajasthan

Paper Trails
Modern Indian Works on Paper from the Gaur Collection
Edited by Tamara Sears
This issue of Metaphysical Art – The de Chirico Journals no. 21/22 (2022), centers around Giorgio de Chirico’s correspondence with his friend Fritz Gartz (1909–1911). A related essay by Simonetta Antellini discusses de Chirico’s writing style and use of the German language. Other essays include Fabio Benzi’s examination of Florence’s cultural milieu in the years 1910–1911. Elena Pontiggia presents a large and previously unpublished collection of letters written by de Chirico to his mother Gemma Cervetto. Riccardo Dottori’s article offers a new interpretation of the painting Serenata (1910), based on a fresh literary source. Completing this volume is a narrative essay by Italo Calvino entitled Cities of Thought (1983), translated into English and introduced by Anne Greeley, which was published alongside a major Paris retrospective of de Chirico’s metaphysical works.
Karkhana takes us on a meandering journey through the Rajasthani city of Udaipur as we follow American artist Waswo X. Waswo, a 20-year resident of India, through a typical day of collaborations with a variety of Indian artists. From miniature painters such as R. Vijay and Dalpat Jingar, to the thirdgeneration photo hand-colorist Rajesh Soni, to the phenomenally skilled painter of golden borders, Shankar Kumawat, we are treated to an intimate look behind the scenes of Waswo’s extended network of co-creators, as well as the photography studio he uses in the outlying village of Varda. Waswo and his team weave visual narratives that blend vintage miniature painting techniques with digital photography, the past with the present, and a self-effacing humor with existential angst.
India is a nation of conflicting realities, where the old and the new, the traditional and modern regularly coexist. Here, the artists are concerned not solely with telling their own tales but also with exploring what it means to live in a nation steeped in tradition. Within the context of modern and contemporary India, works on paper offered artists a way of cultivating transnational modernist expression while continuing to explore the potential of a medium that had deeper roots in older artistic traditions native to the subcontinent. This volume features over 100 watercolors, drawings, etchings, sketches and lithographs by senior Indian modernists, born primarily before the 1950s and who came of age in the decades directly following Independence in 1947. 9788893970617

Sense and Sensation Ganesh Haloi 2021 Debashish Banerji
Shringara of Shrinathji From the Collection of the Late Gokal Lal Mehta Amit Ambalal, Vikram Goya
In this series of ink paintings, we get a significant peek at the working methods of the celebrated contemporary abstract artist, Ganesh Haloi. Like the Taoist and Zen masters of East Asia, Haloi’s reduction of color reveals the pure asceticism of his structural method. The sensory presence of the riparian landscapes of Bengal are referents of memory manifest entirely in monochrome. At the same time, these referents are analyzes, reduction to elementary forms, or rhythmic punctuations evoking music. These patterns and elements, dashed strokes, squiggles, crosses and triangles — large and small — occupy a plane of symbolic memory, where the unconscious is structured like a visual language. Published in association with Akar Prakar, Kolkata.
Pushtimarg, a Vaishnava sect founded by Vallabhacharya in the 15th century, lays great stress on worship of the deity Shrinathji through the joys of life and living and devotion through poetry, food, adornment, and painting. The paintings constitute the Nathdwara school. Shringara of Shrinathji catalogs a set of previously unpublished miniature paintings of the Pushtimarg tradition from the collection of late Shri Gokal Lal Mehta. These 60 splendid artworks were executed by Sukhdev Gaur, the principal artist of the temple, during the dynamic stewardship of Tilkayat Govardhanlalji (1862–1934 AD). Documenting the high degree of skill in draughtsmanship, portraiture, and composition, expositions by artist Amit Ambalal accompany the exceptional, high-quality photographic reproductions of these beautiful paintings in this captivating volume. 9789385360985
Humayun, the son of Babur and second Mughal ruler, reigned in Agra from 1530–1540 and in Delhi from 1555–1556. Until now, his numerous achievements, including winning back the throne of Hindustan, have not been well recorded. The Planetary King follows Humayun’s travels and campaigns during the political and social upheavals of the early 16th century. It delves into his extraordinary social and intellectual life, demystifying his magico–scientific world view and drawing attention to his deep involvement with literature, poetry, painting, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, occultism, and extraordinary inventions. This book accompanies the new site museum at Humayun’s tomb, created by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, New Delhi, offering a new analysis of his mausoleum as the posthumous sum of his visions and dreams.

Galleria Borghese. General Catalogue
I. Modern Sculpture
Edited by Anna Coliva and Vittoria Brunetti
The Galleria Borghese brings together an extraordinary collection of ancient and modern sculpture within a beautifully decorated villa. This volume, dedicated to modern sculpture (Late Renaissance to Baroque to Neoclassical), marks the start of a new general catalogue of the collection. The entries are full of fascinating details. They include world-famous masterpieces by Algardi, Bernini and Canova among others. The sale to Napoleon of many of its Antique works of art (now in the Louvre) was key to the Borghese’s commission works of ancient inspiration, the analysis of which animates the pages of another section, based on the concepts of copy and remake. The catalog closes with a section on restoration, that gives an account of the fundamental role of 16- to 18th-century sculptors in the maintenance and transformation of the archaeological collection in relation to the villa’s display requirements.
Limoges Enamel Triptychs Three Masterpieces from the Carrand Collection
Edited by Paola Venturelli and Ilaria Ciseri
The French city of Limoges was world famous for the production of champlevé enamels during the Middle Ages. Triptychs with a sacred subject, conceived as a painting but shining like jewelry and built with durable materials, became popular. The three works held at the Bargello National Museum in Florence are attributable to Nardon Pénicaud (1470–1542), a primary artist with an active workshop. The three enamel paintings came from the famous collection of Louis Carrand, a Lyon antiquarian, who donated them to the Bargello in the 19th century. Their story is told in Ilaria Ciseri’s essay. Paola Venturelli analyzes the historical and artistic aspects of the works and places them in the context of contemporary enamel production. The final contributions from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure address the conservation of the three delicate enamels and analyzes materials and pigments.
The Medici Portraits At the Uffizi and Galleria Palatina
Adele Milozzi
The Medici family ruled unofficially and later as dukes the city of Florence and Tuscany, from the end of 14th to the end of the 18th century. Under their patronage the Renaissance was born. The members of this powerful family were able to build their public image in a sophisticated cultural environment where famous artists such as Raphael, Pontormo, Bronzino, Vasari, as well as poets, men of letters, scientists, humanists, were active. Portraits played an important role in this public relations strategy. In this guide the marvelous works, held in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti, are presented in chronological order making possible to trace the main stages in the history and genealogy of the Medici family.

The Book of Norman Norman Sunshine / A Life in Art
Norman Sunshine
The Book of Norman: Norman Sunshine / A Life in Art, brings together more than seven decades of the American artist Norman Sunshine’s painting, sculpture, pencil, charcoal, and digital work, all deftly interwoven into his remarkable life story. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sunshine began as an illustrator for the entertainment industry and the New York Times, eventually moving into advertising, where he authored some of the most recognizable campaigns of the 1970s. He quickly drew acclaim as a painter of southern California’s soft geometry and quiet loneliness. The Book of Norman is both a memoir of the social and artistic worlds of post-war America and a deep reflection on a life devoted to making art. The art critic Donald Kuspit said of Sunshine’s work that it is, “a classical example of dynamic equilibrium.” That statement is also true of the artist himself.
Hello World The Body Speaks in the Drawings of Men by James
McMullan
James McMullan
Hello World: The Body Speaks in the Drawings of Men showcases McMullan’s unparalleled ability to depict the beauty of the physical form, through keen lines and vibrant, expressive brushstrokes. Using gouache and a bristle brush, McMullan explores not just the drama and rhythm of bodies in motion, but the excitement and fraught psychological complexity between subject and portraitist. Each of the 83 dynamic studies captures the unspoken dialog between artist and model. Every page dramatizes the energy and tension at the core of the creative experience.
The People’s Park Janet K.
Ruttenberg
The People’s Park showcases American artist Janet Ruttenberg’s monumental engagement with Central Park, bringing together years of work that combine a wide array of mediums, processes, and practices. It is a testament to her tenacious commitment, not only to a place, but also to the people that inhabit it. Reviving the grand landscape painting tradition, she mixes paint, print, video, and photography, forming what is truly a unique and unparalleled body of work. While her antecedents are the post-impressionists Seurat and Manet, she supersedes these influences by exploring the complex worlds of both images and the process of image-making. In addition to over 75 exquisite images, cataloguing her process, this monograph contains three illuminating scholarly essays, contextualizing and analyzing Ruttenberg’s oeuvre.

The Story of My Life Watercolors
1980-2021
Kathy Ruttenberg
Kathy Ruttenberg’s art springs from the world of dreams, nightmares, allegory, and myth. Her figures in clay, wood, and a diverse range of materials are bright with color and texture and stand in contrast to the minimalist aesthetic of the 1970s. Her work has been displayed in both public and private venues around the world. With this deeply personal watercolor work, mainly drawn from her journals, she displays her fascination with the natural world and the unpredictable images that arise from psychological exploration. Here we witness the genesis of an artistic idiom, developed by Ruttenberg over many decades, a catalog of thoughts, impressions, and feelings transitioning from the personal to the universal.

The Georgian National Museum Director’s Choice David Lordkipanidze
Established in 2004, the Georgian National Museum (GNM) in Tbilisi encompasses 20 museums and cultural institutions. The main site tells the story of Georgia’s history from the Bronze Age to the early 20th century. The GNM also records Georgia’s modern history, tracing the rise of a united Georgian state, how it resisted Soviet Occupation and survived the Red Terror. However, perhaps most significantly of all, here visitors can come face-to-face with the earliest hominid known to have left Africa - a 1.8-millionyear-old discovery made by the GNM’s Director, Professor David Lordkipanidze, that has rewritten our understanding of early European humanity. In this beautifully illustrated book, Professor Lordkipanidze illuminates his personal highlights from the collection with his considerable expertise.
Hereford Cathedral
Hereford Cathedral
Hereford Cathedral, with its origins in the seventh century, is one of the oldest cathedral foundations in England and retains a warmth and intimacy all its own. Its two patron saints, the martyred Saxon King Ethelbert and the Norman Bishop Thomas Cantilupe, brought medieval pilgrims and their votive offerings, greatly increasing the cathedral’s revenues. This led both to a series of ambitious building projects such as the fine 13th-century Lady Chapel, and to the accumulation of some rare treasures, including the famed Mappa Mundi, a copy of the Magna Carta, the medieval Cantilupe shrine and a 17th-century chained library. This richly illustrated guide offers a readable and informative introduction to the buildings, treasures and history of one of England’s lesser-known cathedrals.

On the Grid Ways of Seeing in Print Jessica D. Brier
The grid often hides in plain sight, from notepads and spreadsheets to halftone photographic reproductions. It dominates the organization, perception, and representation of the modern world, especially in print. As an invisible framing device, it has become so pervasive that we habitually ignore it. Yet when artists call our attention to the grid, its layered meanings come fully into view. On the Grid: Ways of Seeing in Print surveys photographs, prints, artist’s books, and printed sculptures from the dynamic permanent collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College. From 19th-century scientific and portrait photography to avant-garde and conceptual photography; from mid- 20th-century Minimalist, Pop Art, and Op Art printmaking to experimental bookmaking and photography in the 21st century, this richly illustrated volume explores how artists have embraced, rejected, and reclaimed the grid.

Central Nigerian Art Revisited
Mumuye and Surrounding Peoples
Jan Strybol
Contrary to popular belief, sculpture flourished in northern Nigeria. Wood sculptures could be found just about everywhere. In this study, the author first examines the sculptural traditions of a number of peoples in central Nigeria, more specifically from the Jos Plateau and from the Middle Benue Valley to the source area of the Taraba River. Perhaps the most familiar ethnic group in the Central Benue region to lovers of African art are the Mumuye. Since the end of the last century, as a result of the advance of world religions, the traditional rites of the Mumuye have rapidly disappeared and with them the Mumuye sculptural tradition so much admired in Europe and America. In addition to wood sculptures, Jan Strybol also pays attention to objects in bronze, iron, terracotta and other materials.
Living with Spirits. Mongolian Shaman Material Culture
Diane De Clerck
The Mongolian shamanic material culture is rich and varied. The shaman costume and shamanic objects are very important elements in shamanic thought. The shaman’s costume or spirit robe is the means for the shaman to enter into a relationship with the spirits and it is through a shamanic séance that the shaman comes into contact with the tutelary spirits and shamanic deities. There is a great variety among the shaman costumes and even among the shamanic attributes. Each shaman’s costume is unique: it reflects the history of its owner, his rituals, his experience, his successes and his relationship with the spirits. This book includes a vast and unique collection of shaman costumes, some of which have been exhibited or are part of the collection of renowned museums.

House of Mirrors HMKV
Edited by Inke Arns, Francis Hunger, and Marie Lechner
Artificial intelligence (AI) is usually portrayed as a divine entity that makes “just” and “objective” decisions. Yet AI is anything but intelligent. Rather, it recognizes in large amounts of data what it has been trained to recognize. In performing this task, it is much more efficient than any human being – but this precisely is also its problem. AI only mirrors or repeats what it has been instructed to reflect. Humans train machines, and these machines are only as good or as bad as the humans who train them. Based on this insight, the publication addresses not only algorithmic bias or discrimination in AI, but also AI-related issues such as hidden human labor, the problem of categorization and classification – and our ideas and fantasies about AI. It also raises the question whether (and how) it is possible to reclaim agency in this context.
The Monumentality of the Everyday Jakup Ferri
Jakup Ferri (born 1981 in Pristina, Kosovo) began his career as a painter. After a short interlude in which he was using video, some 17 years ago the artist started turning his drawings into hand-made textile works. Ferri considers carpet-making and embroidery not only as ways of producing a textile product, but also as a technique of social interaction, coherence, and community building. At the 59th Biennale Arte 2022, Ferri presents paintings, embroideries and carpets in a large-scale site-specific installation entitled The Monumentality of the Everyday. With his works, Ferri zooms in to the details of everyday life, shifting our focus away from ‘big’ topics to create an imaginary world inspired by the immediacy of life.
Sammlung Philara Attempts to be Many
Edited by Julika Bosch, Katharina Klang and Sammlung Philara
The Sammlung Philara and Verlag Kettler are pleased to present a resourcesaving and affordable art book series in pocket format, aimed at mobile readers. In them, discursive exhibitions of the Philara Collection are documented and complemented with socio-critical voices from theoretical, journalistic or writing perspectives. As an opener, the publication Attempts to Be Many poses the question of how dynamic concepts of identity can be formulated in opposition to rigid constructs of foreign attribution and ideological one-dimensionality.

Sociarty Pedro Reyes
This book is published to accompany the first comprehensive show of the Mexican artist Pedro Reyes in Europe. The trained architect caused an international sensation in 2012 with his large installation Sanatorium at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel. In the exhibition at Museum Marta Herford, Reyes presents his extensive sculptural work, which is allied to the concept of “social sculpture” (developed by Joseph Beuys) and often references political activism. With his sculptural concepts that take a stand against violence and promote an intensive community experience and greater participation, he invites viewers to explore contemporary perspectives and creates a connection to theater, political activism and psychology. The term ‘sociarty’ was coined by the social scientist Jacob Levy Moreno, who developed a series of therapies for healing society.
When we were Monsters James
Richards
James Richards (born 1983 in Cardiff, UK) is renowned for his provocative and intense moving-image works that collage together a wide range of materials sourced from home movies, private and public archives, as well as TV clips, combined with rich musical soundtracks. Richards’ art draws on the relentless flood of images that has become a hallmark of the 21st century. His works filter, sort, and condense collected materials into a space where personal interiority and digital materiality meet. Alongside his films, Richards has created exhibition projects based on archival research and ongoing dialogues with other artists. Published to accompany the eponymous exhibition at Haus Mödrath, this title brings together sound and video installations as well as sculptural works, while outlining the relationships and influences that have informed Richards’ practice, including collaborative projects with long-standing partners, works created by close friends, and artists that have inspired him.
Pen Meets Paint 200 Years Mauritshuis, 200 Writers, 200 Paintings
What happens when two art forms –the literary and the visual arts – come together? For its bicentenary, the Mauritshuis asked 200 writers to draw inspiration from the museum’s collection. The crème de la crème of today’s literary community, from at home and abroad, participated in this remarkable book. One writer; one work of art from the Mauritshuis; 200 words per contribution – never before have so many authors appeared together in a single publication. To name just a few of the contributors: Isabel Allende, Margaret Atwood, Nicci French, Arnon Grunberg, Murat Isik, Hilary Mantel, Cees Nooteboom, Jan Cremer, Connie Palmen, Sholeh Rezazadeh, Simon Schama and Donna Tartt. The authors themselves were allowed to decide what they wanted to write and the amazing result is stories, poems, short reflections, drawings and even a recipe.

A Touch of Gold The Reminiscences of Geoffrey Munn
Geoffrey Munn
Banker and Philanthropist A Portrait of Anthony de Rothschild
David Kynaston
Digital at Heart How to lead the human centric digital transformation
Stijn
Born and bred in Sussex, Geoffrey Munn, Antiques Roadshow presenter and jewelry expert, came from a traditional rural background – but only weeks after leaving a country Grammar School in 1972, he was plunged into the vortex of the London art world. It was the beginning of the career of a lifetime at the famous firm of Wartski, whose showrooms scintillated with gem-set necklaces, tiaras and three of the famous Fabergé Imperial Easter Eggs. In a colorful and witty narrative, Geoffrey relates his daunting but delightful encounters with HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, HRH Princess Margaret and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. In their wake, Geoffrey met a rich variety of luminaries, including Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, Elton John and Vivienne Westwood. This is certainly a rapid and amusing read but it is also unique study of a narrow and fast-changing society.
In this evocative new book, historian David Kynaston tells the fascinating story of Anthony de Rothschild (1887–1961). Through access to never previously consulted diaries and letters, a threedimensional picture emerges of a complex and thoughtful man guiding the City’s most famous merchant bank through the turbulent years between the 1920s and 1950s. In politics he was open-minded and constructive whilst in his philanthropy, not least through his leading role in helping Jewish refugees (especially children) to leave Nazi Germany for England, he was thoughtful and generous. Austere on the surface but warm beneath, impatient equally of fools and idealogues, always searching for how he could contribute to make a better world – Anthony de Rothschild deserves, arguably more than almost anyone else in the 20th-century City, to be known properly by later generations. 9781788841979

Speak up now! Marketing in times of climate crises Wim Vermeulen
To ensure the well-being of the planet, we need marketing heroes on the barricades for a sustainable future. Research shows that more than 80% of consumers are looking at companies to take the lead in this transition. At the same time, it appears that less than 10% of the messages about sustainability are credible to the public. Speak up Now! helps companies seize this historic opportunity and shows how we can make the shift to a world where business success goes hand in hand with the survival of the planet.
With a Factor 8 to the Mobility System of the Future Cathy Macharis
Climate change is here. The impact of unbridled greenhouse gas emissions is incontrovertibly proven and clearly measurable. If we don’t want to burden future generations with insurmountable problems, we need to take action... and right away. Cathy Macharis, professor of Sustainable Mobility and Logistics at the VUB, puts her finger on the problem and translates meeting the climate goals - which for greenhouse gas emissions implies a reduction by a factor of 8 - into a concrete and sustainable mobility plan to which everyone can and will have to do their bit. In 8 A’s a (Awareness, Avoidance, Act and Shift, Anticipation, Acceleration, Actor involvement, Alteration and All in love!), a plan of action is comprehensively proposed, starting with a change in mentality. This discourse advocates urgent but achievable change, without fingerpointing, hysteria or the pessimism so often inherent in the climate debate.
Black Mountain College as Multiverse
Edited by Arnold Dreyblatt and Petra Maria Meyer
The Black Mountain College (BMC) in North Carolina was the leading institution for interdisciplinary arts education in the late 1940s. Many of America’s foremost artists, poets and designers of the time, as well as numerous emigrants from Germany who came to the Black Mountain College from the Bauhaus after it was closed by the Nazis, were among the teaching staff. This publication is the first to examine the BMC’s educational model, its philosophical approaches and John Dewey’s philosophy of art, with the aim of comprehensively understanding and reviving the BMC’s legacy in order to renew it in a participatory sense. A major focus of this volume is the art project PERFORMING the Black Mountain ARCHIVE by Arnold Dreyblatt, in which students from European art academies were invited to translate an archive on the Black Mountain College created by Dreyblatt into the present time through performative interaction.

Monaco Motor Racing
Edward Quinn.
Motorsport 1950–1965
Wolfgang Frei
The Monaco Grand Prix is considered one of the most demanding races in Formula 1. Constant gear changes and the slowest corner in the world championship have always demanded everything from the racing drivers. Edward Quinn captured the most famous car race in the world from 1950 to 1965 in numerous photos. In his recordings, the well-known Formula 1 track is presented with almost no crash barriers and run-off zones, without advertising posters and sponsor logos. Many of his pictures are now combined for the first time in a large-format illustrated book. Accompanied by short descriptions and background information, they give a fascinating insight into the motorsport history of that time.

Art Déco & Egyptomanie
Jean-Marcel
Humbert
Published on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and the 200th anniversary of the deciphering of the Rosetta stone, this book responds to the ever-growing enthusiasm and curiosity for Egyptomania. This concept refers to a collective imagination which was nurtured throughout the 19th and 20th centuries by archeological digs and exploratory trips. These key discoveries were crucial for creation and particularly for the Art Deco artists who found their inspiration in Egyptian lines and patterns. Art Déco & Egyptomanie explores the origins and functioning of this cultural and artistic movement shaped by many fields: architecture, cinema, sculpture, popular art, theater and fashion. Art Déco & Egyptomanie comes with an explicit and previously unseen iconography.
Danish Porcelain Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl
Dr.
Elliot Todd
Now renowned for its ceramic industry, Denmark earned its status as a leading porcelain exporter through intense rivalry with firms in Russia and across Europe. Founded in 1775, Royal Copenhagen remains one the oldest porcelain manufacturers still in operation today. The factory has experienced numerous highs and lows, and has weathered more than 130 years of competition from the Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Factory. Danish Porcelain was inspired by a collection of porcelain, stoneware and faience from Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Grøndahl, initially gathered by the author’s father in 1947. Developed over the past 20 years, this is the first comprehensive publication to critically review the history of both factories, from their beginnings to their eventual merger.

Hans Wewerka Outdoors – Draußen Stoneware Street Scenes / Straßenszenen in Steinzeug
Edited by Kreisverwaltung des Westerwaldkreises, Nele van Wieringen, Wewerka Archiv, Katharina Uhl
Inspired by the Dutch sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa (1863–1939) and Ernst Barlach (1870–1938), Hans Wewerka (1888–1915) conquered the realm of figurative sculpture while he was still a student. Wewerka created likenesses taken from real life. His artistic approach and his acute awareness of form made him an exceptional creator of modern earthenware who had already gained international recognition during his lifetime. This first, comprehensive monograph featuring a catalog of works documents Hans Wewerka’s previously unknown career and traces his connections to modernist art, such as the Berlin Secession and artists like Rudolf Bosselt, Käthe Kollwitz, and Ernst Barlach.

British Furniture 1820 to 1920
The Luxury Market
Christopher Payne
British Furniture 1820 to 1920 - The Luxury Market is a landmark publication and arguably the first book to properly assess British furniture design through the whole of the Victorian era. It goes further than any book has attempted before by filling in important research particular for the latter half of the century. It shows that what is often termed simply, and once pejoratively, as ‘Victorian’ is often of an earlier date, commencing in the revered Regency period of the 1820s. Christopher Payne considers each decade, adding important new research and building a huge archive of text and images. The book contains in excess of 1000 color photographs and also an important compendium of makers names and details.
Cora Sheibani Jewels
William Grant
Cora Sheibani’s jewels are the product of a highly active imagination. Her creations are designed to surprise and delight –miniature cakes and jellies that look good enough to eat; rings and bracelets that glow in the dark; shimmering clouds with diamond raindrops; jewels that stare back at you, and plant pots billowing with vegetation. Her design handwriting is predicated on a bold sense of form and color, allied with a playful, contradictory mindset. Her design philosophy is to make jewelry she herself wants to wear and in doing so, she trusts that her customers in turn will appreciate and value her personal aesthetic. Cora Sheibani – Jewels is published to mark the 20th anniversary of Cora Sheibani’s eponymous brand.
The Odysseys of Lydia Courteille
Juliet Weir-de la Rochefoucauld
For more than 40 years, Parisian jeweler Lydia Courteille has been confounding the Place Vendome jewelry houses with her bold and brazen designs. Her unique and avant-garde style is legendary. Her collections spark the senses. In this impassioned new biography, Juliet Weir-de la Rochefoucauld takes us on a voyage around the world, sharing the stunning locations and famous women from whom Courteille draws inspiration. In the disposable world of 21st century consumerism, amidst the monotony of marketing algorithms and ceaseless production lines, Lydia Courteille has forged her own creative path, refusing to let the individuality of her work slip from her fingers. Her jewels crystalize memories, honor the dead, make powerful social statements, poke fun at modern absurdities, and transport us to the other side of the planet. Guided by an acclaimed author and jewelry expert, this colorful monograph renders her odysseys of creation and discovery in stunning visual detail.

Babetto The Entity of Being / L’Entità dell’Essere / Die Einheit des Seins
Fred Jahn, Friedhelm Mennekes, Andrea Nante, Thereza Pedrosa
The Italian goldsmith of the “Paduan School” Giampaolo Babetto is famous for his jewelry – geometrically distinct shapes arranged into refined entities of extraordinary perfection and beauty. However, the artist’s wide-ranging spectrum also includes furniture design, silverwork, sculptures, liturgical utensils, and architecture. The Entity of Being presents the first overarching survey of the virtuoso Babetto. The comprehensive catalog section is complemented by four contributions that provide exciting insights into the work of this universal artist.
Esther Brinkmann
Ward Schrijver, Philippe
Solms, Fabienne X. Sturm, Elizabeth Fischer
The work of Esther Brinkmann is characterized by the meaning she bestows on the ring, its relationship to the hand and, perhaps most surprisingly, to its case. The Swiss artist prefers processed and textured materials, which now also include new component forms, techniques, and substances since her time living in China and India. She established a further education training program in jewelry design — a unique undertaking in Switzerland — at the Haute École d’Art et de Design (HEAD) in Geneva. Here, her knowledge and autonomy in her work have already shaped several other artistic careers. This publication presents Esther Brinkman’s oeuvre from the past 30 years and highlights for the first time the remarkable strength and the freedom that distinguish the artist’s rich career.

Gerd Rothmann
With his body impressions of 1976, Gerd Rothmann abruptly changed his approach to jewelry. With influences from the fine arts playing a decisive role in this, the incarnate connection between jewelry and body became his focus of attention. Following on from the 2009 Catalogue Raisonné, published with his golden nose on the cover, this Catalogue Raisonné 2 featuring hand and ring continues the entire oeuvre of this exceptional artist up to the present day. In addition to the jewelry itself, personal notes from Rothmann’s workshop and numerous images showing people in relation to the jewelry are presented. For, as the artist himself described in his notes, it is “not solely the piece of jewelry that is important but the person who lives with it and experiences it. They bestow the whole with meaning.”

Jewelry + Image The GRASSI Adorns
Edited by Olaf Thormann and Sabine Epple
Jewelry art is a small but easily discernible voice amid the great choir that is the art scene. It has been the impetus for innovation and a seismograph for current discourse within the applied arts for several decades. Now, for the first time, the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts is presenting its holdings of modern jewelry, ranging from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. Analyzed and assembled, it provides insights into the multifaceted oeuvres of around 180 jewelry artists from around the world. The collection is broadly representative of the international developments in jewelry art and as such it especially grants a special view of the approaches from GDR before the unification. Die Mysterien der Zeichen Johannes Reuchlin, Schmuck, Schrift & Sprache
Edited by Matthias Dall’Asta and Cornelie Holzach

Paul Brandt artiste joaillier et décorateur moderne Bleue-Marine Massard
As one of the key players of modern jewelry in the ‘20s, Paul Brandt worked with the most famous jewelers of his time, like Fouquet or Sandoz. With his first jewelry creations he joined the art nouveau movement before focusing on an art deco style. Paul Brandt considered his jewelry as works of art in their own right and displayed them during exhibitions where the scenography kept getting more innovative. From the ‘30s, he extended his activity to interior design. This monograph displays the talent of this major artist who left his mark in France and abroad. Recounting his whole career, it highlights the extent of Paul Brandt’s skills, not only in jewelry but also in medal making, decoration and interior design.

A hundred years after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the Museum Fünf Kontinente is showing the special exhibition In trockenen Tüchern! Kai Kristiansen An Industrious Designer Sisse Bro
At 92 years old, Danish furniture designer Kai Kristiansen is still at it, practicing the same methods as he did in the 1950s when he set up his design studio. In collaboration with numerous Danish furniture manufacturers, Kristiansen has conceived significant and well-crafted products which remain popular today. Written in conjunction with the designer, Kai Kristiansen: An Industrious Designer is the first overview of his more than 70-year career and prolific output. The copiously illustrated biography reveals how his basic tenets of economy, ecology and common sense influenced the manufacturing processes of the furniture industry outside the spotlight of Copenhagen. Looking back at his life and career, he now tells his own story, sharing his approach, experiences and visions.

Silver Triennial International 20th Worldwide Competition
Edited by Christianne WeberStöber and Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e.V..
Since 1965, the Association for Goldsmiths’ Art and the German Goldsmiths’ House Hanau have been organizing the Silver Triennial International to promote contemporary silversmithing. The 20th competition demonstrates the variety of works at a high level: 121 silversmiths from 21 countries submitted hollow- and flatware or free-formed works. The focus is not only on technical and artistic aspects; a large number of the entries also have a socio-critical and contemporary historical background. An expert jury was again assembled this year: Dirk Allgaier, head of Arnoldsche Art Publishers, Stuttgart; Dr. Claudia Banz, curator for design at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin; and JaKyung Shin, silversmith and assistant professor at Seoul National University, Korea, selected 67 impressive silver works.
Deep-Seated The Secret Art of Upholstery
Edited by Olaf Thormann and Thomas Rudi
Upholstered pieces of furniture are familiar to all of us as more or less constant companions of everyday life. Upholstery is comfortable, it conveys security and promises comfort, it has a specific design, asserts or creates status and tells a (hi)story. We rarely consider its interior. At the same time, a view into the hidden content of chairs and armchairs is a journey into secrets, into lashed and sprung constructions that prove to be unknown masterpieces of craftsmanship. Deep-Seated. The Secret Art of Upholstery explores furniture and its interiors and explains why upholstery is always also a part of cultural and social history.

Featuring mostly large-scale offices, with detailed design ideas about space division, environment, decoration and lighting, leading workplace designers share their thoughts with accompanying images and floorplans, helping readers to envisage how they too can create an empowering and positive working environment.

Belgian Solutions Volume 3
David Helbich
Event Design Yearbook 2022 / 2023
Katharina Stein
Divided into five chapters, this book not only introduces the importance of LOGO design, principles and the conventional process, but also provides an in-depth analysis of the typeface and graphic design in LOGO. The book contains more than 70 excellent case studies from different industries, including some classic cases with detailed design ideas. From knowledge to practice, from explanations to cases, this is a good understanding, comprehensive and practical design guide.
Not every solution is an answer to a problem. A new volume of witty, absurd, and at times hilarious hands-on solutions for our everyday environment. The Brussels-based artist David Helbich started collecting Belgian Solutions in 2006: he made photos of the peculiar and sometimes hilarious, no-nonsense solutions that he spotted in his daily surroundings. Once he started to share his photos online on social network platforms in 2009 the project grew rapidly, with contributions posted by Belgian Solution spotters from around the world. In 2013 he published his first collection of photos, a sequel followed in 2015 and now he brings us a third volume of absurd and hilarious ‘solutions’, bound in a beautiful linen softcover. After over two years of COVID-19, there is now a bright light at the end of the tunnel: most events can take place again. New formats and digital approaches have become established and professionalized and the industry has gathered a wealth of valuable experience. But despite the waning pandemic and the tangible delight about every event, the restart is not proving easy, due to a lack of personnel and a war, along with many still unanswered questions surrounding digital and hybrid experiences. Previous developments and many of the 45 projects in this edition show new approaches, but in some respects still no overall ideal answers. And that is quite alright – because we are in the middle of a learning process!

The Glove More than fashion
Ediuted by Inez Florschütz, Leonie Wiegand, foreword by Madeleine Häse
In the form of The Glove Deutsches Ledermuseum is tracing the varied cultural history of an accessory whose importance is often underestimated. The sheer diversity of this article of clothing is demonstrated by means of selected exhibits, from warming Inuit mittens, boxing gloves, disposable rubber or latex gloves, and Pontifical gloves, to models by renowned designers such as Marc Jacobs and Dries Van Noten. As a love token, a gauntlet in a duel, or as the insignia of royalty, this highly symbolic accessory and firm component of first courtly, then bourgeois etiquette looks back on a longstanding tradition. Gloves, for centuries an indispensable part of any elegant wardrobe, are currently experiencing a comeback.
Kari Steihaug
Edited by Nina M. Schjønsby
In Kari Steihaug’s art, what is overseen plays a major role. The things that have been set aside, unfinished projects, objects that are worn or frayed are all solicitously brought into the light. This is also evident in the materials used by the textile artist: Steihaug’s works feature worn out woollen garments as well as unfinished knitwear. By embracing imperfection, her creations become a counterbalance to the galloping consumer culture of our time, allowing us to see with fresh eyes what surrounds us in everyday life. This book brings together 25 years of her work. Contributions in poetry and prose introduce Steihaug’s work and trace the lines of a diverse and rich practice.

The Holker Album Textile Samples and Industrial Espionage in the 18th Century
Edited by Ariane Fennetaux and John Styles
In 1751, John Holker (1719-1786), an English textile manufacturer exiled in France, undertook an industrial espionage mission to England to collect samples of English textiles on behalf of the French king, Louis XV. On his return, the samples were assembled in a manuscript volume, which is now preserved at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. Each sample in this album is accompanied by a handwritten technical description specifying the quality of the fabric, its price, its dimensions and the manufacturing processes. This album is famous for preserving the oldest identifiable samples of jean fabric. The book demonstrates the importance of centuries-old links between France and the United Kingdom and is an indispensable work of reference for the history of textiles.
Ikebana. Opposites Attract
Edited by Katrien Van Moerbeke
Contrasts, opposites and differences keep life interesting – even though keeping a balance between two opposing forces is often difficult, especially when we understand that one cannot be achieved without experiencing the other. Floral design, Ikebana in particular, is often a balancing act in itself. Ikebana pieces strive for harmony between straight and curved lines, a right balance between taking away and adding elements, between adhering to the rules and breaking them. Opposites Attract uses the idea of opposition and contrast as a starting point. Starting from an antonym pair, more than 150 international ikebanists created inspiring and powerful arrangements expressing two opposing feelings and concepts. The multifaceted ways in which these contrasts were given shape, attest to the creativity and ingenuity of our artists and the sheer versatility of Ikebana.

Qianyuan (the ‘Hidden Garden’) is a classic southern Chinese scholar’s garden that was gifted to Ruhr University (Germany) by its sister school, Tongji University of Shanghai, in 1990. Beginning with the original concept, this book illustrates the history and design of the garden, with abundant pictures and accompanying text. The garden draws on the Legend of Peach Blossom Spring, in which a fisherman who is drawn to a blossoming peach orchard accidentally discovers a hidden outcrop of paradise, which once discovered can never be found again (a plaque in the garden recounts the tale). Qianyuan has borrowed theory and techniques from the ancient Chinese gardening masterpiece The Garden Treatise, whose artistic language was influential in the creation of this Chinese ‘paradise’ in Germany. The garden is considered an important example of Sino-German cultural exchange. 9788412240276

Famous Chinese Gardens (Centenary Edition)
Chen Congzhou
Chinese gardens distinguish themselves from other gardens in the world by successfully integrating architecture, painting, calligraphy, and literature with garden design. Each classical Chinese garden has its own unique style. This book explores the design and characteristics of some of the most famous classical gardens in China through a wealth of photographs and matching verses.
Garden Heritage Digital Document: Heyuan Garden in Yangzhou Yang Chen, Leigh Shutter
Heyuan Garden, the largest existing private classical garden in Yangzhou, China, is the subject of this book, which offers a complete description and representation of the garden’s overall characteristics. It contains a wealth of maps, aerial photographs, and diagrams which are published here for the first time. Led by the ICOMOS-IFLA International Scientific Committee on Cultural Landscapes (ISCCL), the Garden Heritage Digital Document (GHDD) project was set up in 2018 to highlight representative cases of Chinese classical gardens, adopt international cultural heritage archive frameworks and standards, and use new digital technologies to establish highquality heritage archives to make up for the shortcomings of existing classical garden records.
On Chinese Gardens Chen Congzhou
This book is a classic of theoretical writing on Chinese gardens by Tongji University Professor Chen Congzhou, a well-known authority on Chinese gardens. Here, the author sets forth new and novel concepts in garden design and propounds a set of distinctive and penetrating ideas on the subject, including the arrangement of scenes, “in-motion” and “in-position” types of gardens, the handling of hills and water, the planning of buildings, and the laying out of flowers and trees. It elucidates the arrangement of gardens and shows how these relate to human sentiments, and how what is tangible in the garden relates to the intangible. With its unique style this book is not only a theoretical work of garden design, but also a work of rare literary value.

The Story of the Tekkieh Moaven Kermanshah, Iran
Edited by Hadi Seif, translated by Hamid Kooros
The Tekkieh Moaven is a significant religious monument in Kermanshah and one of the most important national memorials in Iran. Following the building’s destruction in the early 20th century, it was rebuilt and furnished with exclusive tiles, the focal point of this publication. Since 1975, it has also been a popular museum visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. The tiles illustrate the fascinating world of art in the Persian empire and Islamic era and are distinguished by colorful illustrations featuring floral, calligraphic, and also figurative motifs. Author Hadi Seif weaves the recollections of the ancient guardian Sojdehpur into his narratives, contributing valuable insights into the evolutionary history of these impressive tiles. This is the first major English-language publication dedicated to this outstanding cultural monument.
Suzhou Gardens Centenary Edition Chen Congzhou
This book explores the illustrious gardens in Suzhou as both an important page in the history of Chinese gardens, and as a place of recreation and cultivation for the people. Based on architectural surveys of Suzhou gardens and an analysis of Zhuozheng Yuan (the Humble Administrator’s Garden) and Liuyuan (the Lingering Garden), this abundantly illustrated book presents the overall gardening characteristics and gardening skills of Jiangnan Garden. Included here are 196 rare archival images of actual gardens, echoed by Song lyrics and calligraphic writing, which provide a comprehensive interpretation of the art of traditional Chinese gardens in both form and shape. The essays are characterized by an urbane and elegant narrative style and occasional passages of lyric expression, and touch on the fields of history, architecture, literature, and painting.

These diaries provide an invaluable first-hand insight into Siamese politics and governance at a turbulent time, as well as poignant glimpses of his personal life and divorce from his Russian wife, Katya.

Our Colonial Inheritance Wayne Modest
Our Colonial Inheritance explores the complex ways in which slavery and colonialism continue to shape the present, and examines the many entanglements of colonial knowledge systems and infrastructures with our everyday lives. This publication comes at a time when important conversations are happening about the role that the colonial past has played in shaping our society, and how we can engage with this past in the present. The use of the term “inheritance” in the title is a conscious choice, used to provoke what in our view is a different kind of relationship to the past. Throughout the publication, the authors interrogate what it means to inherit the (infra)structures of the colonial past, its categories, its relations and even its objects, and how we can deal with such bequests.

Collegium Vocale Gent Philippe Herreweghe
Philippe Herreweghe, Joep Stapel, Luc De Voogdt, Stephan Vanfleteren
It was in 1970 that Philippe Herreweghe founded Collegium Vocale Gent, dedicated among other things to works by Johann Sebastian Bach and German Baroque music. The ensemble brought new insights on the performance of Baroque music to bear on vocal music, and attained world fame within just a few short years. In 2022, Philippe Herreweghe marked his 75th birthday with a splendid book in which he looks back at his life and his successful career as a conductor. Photographer Stephan Vanfleteren accompanied the ensemble to the Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi summer festival in Tuscany, and has produced a set of masterful images of the ensemble and its conductor.
Monarchy, Revolution and Refugees
Laos - Thailand - ArgentinaKampuchea
Walter Irvine
Walter Irvine’s account places his personal experiences against the political and cultural changes that surrounded the Lao and Cambodian revolutions of the 1970s and 80s, giving particular attention to refugee movements and the impact. Irvine’s professional involvement as teacher in Laos, social anthropologist in Thailand and UNHCR official in Argentina gives him an insider’s understanding of the specificity of culture, the dynamics of political change, the realities of forced exile, and the challenges of refugee work. His description of revisiting Indochina in 2016 puts the account of the early period into perspective.

Fontana
Italian photographer Franco Fontana (b.1933), a pioneer of color photography, is best known for his boldly colored abstract landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes. This book features previously unpublished and experimental images from his archive alongside some of his best-known works. Over the 60 years of his career, Franco Fontana photographed that which cannot be seen, and was able to capture images abstracted from reality, independent of the subject portrayed. This meticulously compiled volume is dedicated to those who are approaching this artist’s practice for the first time, as well as to those who wish to go deeper into his work by exploring these previously invisible spaces which the sensitive eye of the photographer has glimpsed and translated into a unique and unprecedented image.

Flash | Back Mauritshuis Den Haag
Rineke Dijkstra, Viviane
Sassen, and Anton Corbijn
What happens when new masters pick up where old masters left off? On the occasion of the bicentenary of the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the museum asked contemporary photographers to reflect on the permanent collection. Which masters capture their imagination? How do they interpret 17th-century art? The result: 16 new works by 16 contemporary photographs, including Erwin Olaf, Rineke Dijkstra, Anton Corbijn and Stephan Vanfleteren, one for each room in the Mauritshuis. The new works will be displayed alongside the 17thcentury works that inspired them and will be put equally next to each other in this luxury book.
Instanton Phone Photos Anton Corbijn
In Instanton, photographer and filmmaker Anton Corbijn presents a series of images, most of which have never been published previously. Corbijn gained his fame and reputation with his portraits of famous figures including Nick Cave, Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones, Marlene Dumas, Gerhard Richter, Clint Eastwood, Kate Moss and a host of other influential musicians, artists, filmmakers, models and designers. But over the years, Corbijn has also captured a wealth of intriguing images on his mobile phone. Instanton brings together a wide selection of these snapshots from his private life, as well as shots taken whilst traveling, recording ‘the profane and the profound’.
Ikonen Anton Corbijn

IKONEN contains three series: Cemeteries, a.somebody and Lenin, USSR. Cemeteries is an intriguing collection of black-and-white photos of gravestones. In a.somebody, we can see dozens of self-portraits after past legends from the world of music, photographed in Strijen, the village of Corbijn’s birth – outdoors and in his studio. The book also shows previously unpublished series on Lenin’s visual presence in the former USSR from the early 1980s. Publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition, from 30 September 2022 to 26 February 2023 in Landgoed Het Hof in Bergen, The Netherlands.

Lightness Frieke Janssens
With Lightness Frieke Janssens has created a cathartic photo series, tapping into our urge to escape and our individual quest for a sense of purpose and meaning. Her compositions explore the visual dichotomy between weightlessness and gravity, water and air, aesthetics and imperfection. Using the sea and its eternal ebb and flow as a backdrop, the photographer contemplates the universally human. To what extent can we ever know or understand each other? This exclusive numbered and signed leporello is published on the occasion of the exhibition Lightness, which runs at Cultural Centre Scharpoord, KnokkeHeist from 26 March to 12 June 2022. Its publication coincides with ‘Foto Knokke-Heist’. With contributions by Sofie Crabbé, Lize Spit and Thijs Demeulemeester.
Werner Mantz The Perfect Eye
Frits Giertzberg, Stijn Huijts, Huub Smeets
Werner Mantz (1901-1983) was a prominent architectural and industrial photographer who began his career in the 1920s. As one of the most important photographers of the New Building movement, Mantz’s oeuvre bridges the gap between the often-anonymous nature of commissioned photography and the modernist, artistic avant-garde movements of the interwar years, such as the Bauhaus. In the 1970s, Mantz was even hailed as the ‘missing link’ in the history of international photography. To date, only thematic selections from Mantz’s wide-ranging oeuvre have been exhibited. This monograph sets the record straight by showcasing, for the very first time, his immense versatility.

NL365- A Year in The Netherlands
Frans Lemmens, Marjolijn van Steeden
This beautifully illustrated book offers a sweeping pictorial vision of the Netherlands, with its iconic windmills, canals, and tulips portrayed alongside images of agricultural innovation, dance festivals, Dutch design and modern architecture. The rich history of the stubborn but tolerant Dutch people comes through clearly in the work of photographer Frans Lemmens and his partner Marjolijn van Steeden. Their approach – a photo of the Netherlands every day of the year – has turned this book into a truly unique photo document: a feast for the eyes and an ode to a special and beautiful country.
Planktonium An Unseen World
Jan van Ijken
Planktonium is a photo project and a short film by Dutch photographer/ cinematographer Jan van Ijken about the unseen world of living microscopic plankton. It is a voyage into a secret universe inhabited by alien-like creatures. These stunningly beautiful, extremely diverse, and numerous organisms are unknown to most of us because they are invisible to the naked eye. However, they are wandering beneath the surface in waters all around us and are of vital importance for all life on earth. Phytoplankton (small plant-like cells) produce half of all the oxygen on earth by photosynthesis, like plants and trees do on land. Jan van Ijken photographed the plankton through microscopes, revealing the beauty and delicate structures of these minute organisms in the finest detail.
Saskia Boelsums. Artist with a Camera
Saskia Boelsums
Dramatic skies, rain-swept vistas, fields of flowers, a single piece of fruit; Dutch photographer Saskia Boelsums’ work encompasses subjects both small and vast. This career overview, accompanied by an interview with the artist, explores how she has evolved as an artist, from still life and portrait photography to her well-known impressionistic landscapes. She lives and works under the same skies as the Dutch Masters, and she references their influence in her approach to colour, light and subject. Saskia Boelsums: Artist with a Camera is her third monograph from Lannoo, and it captures the range of her work in a beautifully presented volume of words and images.

Silence of the Tides
Pieter-Rim de Kroon
The Wadden Sea region, which extends over the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark is one of the last remaining large-scale ecosystems that dry out at low tide, and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since June 2009. Silence of the Tides is a cinematic portrait of this unique nature reserve of intertidal mud flats and wetlands. Director PieterRim de Kroon’s 102-minute film explores the fragile relationship between man, nature, and tides. It captures the fog, wind, and water, the constantly changing light, and the ever-present horizon. This book was created from high-resolution frames from the film, which were personally selected by director de Kroon. It includes a DVD of the film.
Bare Handed Holly Lynton, with contributions by Terence Washington, Carl Fuldner
In Bare Handed, photographer Holly Lynton presents a nuanced portrait of rural life in 21st-century America. Returning to specific communities year after year, Lynton moves beyond mythology to reveal a complex social landscape suffused with tradition but unburdened by nostalgia. The 85 gestural portraits and visceral landscapes in her debut monograph depict people working barehanded in tandem with their environments, using tools mostly replaced by mechanization. This decade-long series goes far beyond the yields of a harvest to celebrate an almost spiritual state of being that emerges from time-honored practice and underscores a commitment to unmediated experiences with the natural world. Her keen attention to cultural visual memory is further contextualized in original poetry and essays by art historians Terence Washington and Carl Fuldner.
Spin Yusuke Takagi
This work looks back on the scars that alcoholism has left on the family and confronts the anxiety of the intergenerational chain of events. The visual story expresses the feelings and the future that Takagi learned from his father, who lived with his alcoholic father, and from the deep anxiety he found in the midst of that anxiety, as well as the feelings and the future that he learned from his father’s addiction.

L’art de vivre en Provence
Arles, Les Alpilles & La Camargue Henk van Cauwenbergh
His search for top culinary addresses brought photographer Henk van Cauwenbergh to the region that thrilled him more than 30 years ago. During the unforgettable years working alongside the famous fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, he lost his heart to Provence. Henk van Cauwenbergh shows us the pure and unspoiled Camargue, the romantic landscape of the Alpilles, the whimsical beauty of the rock formations of Les Baux and, last but not least, Arles, that beautiful historical art city that has so much to offer.
Greenland
Fokion Zissiadis
Greenland is an unfamiliar world for most people–Fokion Zissiadis sets out to change this in his fantastic book of photographs. He shows the country and its people, its flora and fauna in impressive images, and these in turn reflect how deeply passionate he is about the Far North, especially the vast, icy beauty of winter. His photographs are accompanied by a very personal interview, in which Fokion Zissiadis describes how and why Greenland became his focus, and why he initially approached the endeavor a bit too casually. He draws our attention to the indigenous population, but also to the dangers Greenland’s environment is facing.
Peripheren Katja Stuke, Oliver Sieber
In their works, Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber address questions about the structure of cities and the links between urban and social boundaries. Instead of focusing on individual images, Stuke and Sieber prefer to create series and sequences, layering, mixing, and connecting elements to create wideranging associations. Their most recent work links the French capital with the Ruhr and its imagined center, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, which is often referred to as the ‘Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr.’ However, neither the Eiffel Tower nor the Zollverein complex feature in the photos. Rather, Stuke and Sieber’s experimental work juxtaposes snapshots taken along the périphérique ring road in Paris and photos of places associated with the Ruhr.

Germany’s South, Germany’s North … everywhere CURVES has found scenic roads to fall in love with. But what about Eastern Germany? Just empty motorways? Bumpy village streets? Plattenbau buildings in blooming landscapes? These are prejudices that CURVES invalidates. Eastern Germany has dream roads, magical places and people prone to driving for the sake of driving. In a nutshell: it is this special flow of curvy roads that photographer Stefan Bogner tracks down in the new volume of CURVES

Walking Distance
Olaf Unverzart
Five continents, three decades: with Walking Distance, Olaf Unverzart presents his interpretation of a travel diary. Beyond tourist attractions, well-known places with supposedly typical folklore, his volume of photography opens our eyes to the things and creatures ‘in between’ – this ‘in between’ mainly takes place on the street. The power of the images lies in the stillness and intimacy of the scenes.

Since 2015, Office ZHU has been working with the Department of Architecture of Shanghai Jiao Tong University on the project Cycling@Shanghai and has done two rounds of research on the use of bicycles in Shanghai. The results of this research are gathered here. Starting with a brief history, the book systematically explores cycle infrastructure planning through comparative studies on seven bike-friendly cities (Copenhagen, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, etc.) around the world.

Goran Tomašević
David Thomson, Jean-François Leroy, Vincent Jolly, Alain Mingam
Goran Tomašević is a living legend. Not only has he survived for 30 years in crisis zones, but he has mastered the supreme art of photography, interpreting the world in a humanistic way, following in the footsteps of Robert Capa and James Nachtwey. This powerful, terrifying book conveys a Dantesque vision of our humanity. Current circumstances lead us to believe that this madness will go on and on. Goran is just 13 years old when his father gives him his first camera – an ancient FED 5V. And with it, his life begins to become a constant adventure, described in the 444 pages of this book. The quality of his reportage and the power of his images enabled him to join the Reuters agency in 1996 and, over the next 20 years, to become one of the most awarded photographers in the world. His œuvre can be called a photographic synthesis of the arts, an eminent contribution to the great path of photo reportage and an indispensable history of the last 30 years.
