Hi everyone, April has been another busy month for events, presentations & new projects at acdc and we wanted to share this with you in the all new format for the newsletter. The new LDCfocus provides you with the opportunity to learn about two guys that are very proactive in getting involved with acdc in creative architectural lighting and making sure clients really understand the qualities of light & lighting design. acdc also took the opportunity at the recent product launch window in Dornbirn to get the marketing teams outside in the cold, setting up lighting installations in small teams to learn about the quality of the lit effect with the acdc outdoor range.

Nightgeist was back again, with the finale being held at the Cloisters area of Glasgow University. Throughout the spring these networking events have been held at some of the most prestigious and iconic venues around the UK including the majestic Warwick Castle and HMS Great Britain.

Nightgeist

GLASGOW UNIVERSTIY These events provided a relaxed environment giving the invitees the unique opportunity to network, pick up useful hints and tips, discuss projects and get some practical experience of acdc’s outdoor portfolio as part of the Zumtobel Group

Starting the evening was an informative façade presentation by Dan Hodgson acds’s application director an experienced lighting designer himself, who prior to working for acdc headed up a leading lighting designers London office. Delegates were then split into teams where the products were put through their paces. All the teams let their creativity loose, lighting their designated areas beautifully and finally talking through their application

stories with the judges. The Nightgeist events were a perfect mix of education, networking and fun. Feedback from all who attended was extremely positive. A special thank you to all the dedicated teams who worked tirelessly to ensure their success and to all those who attended and well done to the teams that won. Hopefully we will see you at the champions of champion’s event. Watch this space!

Launch Window Training

“It gave everyone the opportunity to learn about the optical performance of the acdc external family of luminaires, the output and how the different types of Linears and & floods from acdc can be used to illuminate a complete façade”.

As part of the bi-annual Launch Window event, acdc organised an interactive evening event for all brands. The evening began with a welcoming presentation and an update on the outdoor architectural application workshops that have recently

been held and with the help of a few drinks and a some buffet food to keep us all happy acdc then organised for all of those attending to be split into teams and have a mini competition, lighting the facades around the Inatura, Dornbirn.

Field Marketing Manager My professional story begins a long time ago when, after graduation I worked as bricklayer with my uncle for a while. I loved the feeling of creating something from scratch, working outdoor and having to deal with customers In 1981, I started working for the French company Mazda joining the lighting design office.Calculations were made by just using a scientific calculator and checking flux intensity values on tables printed on paper, at the time I had to learn basic computer language and that’s how I wrote the first lighting computer program!!! 1986, I joined another French company some of you may remember: Europhane. It was later acquired by Thorn and then Thorn was acquired by Zumtobel After 20 years of career as head of technical office, I was asked to move to the Italian marketing team and this was the beginning of a new challenge. I have a clear picture of success in my mind: as well as Volkswagen Group has the luxurious Bugatti, the “simply clever” Skoda and the tough Scania, It’s impressing that the owner of a Skoda thinks his/her car is the best for its segment and not a cheap car. Different brands in the same group topping their specific segments: what an amazing example of marketing success! At Zumtobel Group we need to become a real multibrand group and we can achieve this result being proud of our brands and their histories. Zumtobel Group can count on acdc, Thorn and Reiss brands now joining their tradition to get a common success.

I feel very lucky to still doing what I like most after more than 30 years.

lives and it’s not just the result of a calculation. We continuously interact with a three dimensional environment, people and time. Life is about being in the right place at the right time and that’s what happened to me when I had the chance to work with Oscar-nominated director of photography Dante Spinotti at Udine Castle.

His vision deeply influenced me to the point I totally switched from a simple and symmetric lighting to a visionary project in which the light coming from the city hit the castle yet respecting its architecture. I recalled this experience while working on Castelbrando mockup with my colleague Francesco Presepi; in that occasion we had a short time to bring owners of important vinyards to the world of light and change their vision. To take a break from this activity I love to do trekking in the mountains. I frequently do it with my daughter, with whom I reached the top of Monte Rosa at 4600m. We started from an altitude of 1800m and didn’t use any cableway: I didn’t believe I could do that at 56!

Now I’m responsible for a crossbrand training program consisting of eleven application webinars and six workshops at our offices. This time the goal is to bring attendants to a real multibrand approach. The early results are amazing with an average of 130 webinar attendants and more than 40 people joining our workshop from all over the country to better understand the potential of our group strategy.

To me light is a mix of mathematics and art and those two aspects are equally important to make a project and to really understand how light behaves. I always keep in mind that light intensity changes according to inverse-square law but also it has an emotional impact on our

Shaun Lawry Concept Designer Name: Shaun Lawry. Position: Concept Designer. How long have you been @ Zumtobel: 2 years. How did you get into lighting? Where did it all begin?: It all began at Uni. I had a passion for Bauhaus and Art Deco, I particularly loved the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh a brilliant Scottish Architect and designer with a unique Modernist style heavily influenced by Art Nouveau. At Uni it was easy to communicate ideas through furniture or lighting and I chose the latter. So much was my passion for lighting that I specialised in this area for my final year project, producing new ideas and creating a new system for “Lighting improvement in the home” What project are you working on at the moment?: Beverley Minster Church, providing a 3D lighting vision that will demonstrate fully our ideas.

Saint Alkmunds Footbridge, Derby

How would you describe your job? What does your standard day look like? Design Specials and providing Application Design Concepts, allowing our clients to fully appreciate our vision. Working closely with my colleague Kevin Rolph we can provide a variety of Services, Specials, Application Design, Optical Design, Engineering, Visualisations, Presentations and demonstrations of product through prototyping and mock-ups. We however don’t work in the Real World but a 3D Virtual World using design software such as SolidWorks and 3D Studio MAX. What’s the most rewarding/best things about your job?: Promoting new design and creating enthusiasm amongst our colleagues, always looking for that extra WOW factor. Great projects such as St Alkmund’s Way Footbridge and seeing the reaction of the general public is extremely rewarding. I remember seeing a young woman skipping across the bridge with the movement from the RGB colour changing luminaires. You can read about the COGLED luminaire used on St Alkmund’s Way footbridge in a forthcoming case study. Thanks to Sharren Hussey-Clarke for getting me involved with this project.

What’s the most challenging aspects of what you do/your job?: “Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that’s what gets you.” - Jeremy Clarkson. Always trying to provide something new and exciting which beats the last project. Constantly exploring new technology and staying ahead of the game. What are you in need of most?: Shared passion and understanding that creativity is differentiator. “Intuition and concepts constitute... the elements of all our knowledge, so that neither concepts without an intuition in some way corresponding to them, nor intuition without concepts, can yield knowledge.” - Immanuel Kant. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?: I had the chance to work with John Terry of Anglepoise lamps, the Great Grandson of founder Herbert Terry We created a new lamp design using clever optics, that was eventually sold as dual brand product with the Anglepoise name. I remember at the time John had bought a new Lotus Elise (a silver S1) and had great pleasure in showing me all the design cues, the chassis, aluminium extruded and bonded, (he was obviously passionate about design and his choice of car emphasised this) we had an in depth conversation about car suspension design and how these early ideas by George Cowardine, a car designer, created the first “Terry Anglepoise”. I have the pleasure of having one of these iconic 1227 lamps on my office desk at home. That does make me sound quite boring – I did once play Trombone in the Girls Brigade! (not very well).

The bridge was demolished and rebuilt by Derby City Council In 2007 and the design was inspired by the traditional silk route through the city. Over time the original lighting sources had failed and Derby Council were given the go ahead to refurbish the

LOUIS VUITTON

Client: Louis Vuitton Architect: Booth Hansen Location: Chicago Lighting Solution: acdc Linear Lighting Design: Schuler Shook

“We selected acdc linear products because of their IP67 rating, super compact size and superior glare shielding. The fixture was also available in a black finish and with a remote driver, both of which helped to integrate neatly into the architectural design Robert Shook, Director of Schuler Shook rhythm at a human scale, while the vertical emphasis plays an important role in tying the overall building composition together.

Architectural firm Booth Hansen recently completed the design of a two-storey storefront for Louis Vuitton, set at the base of the historic Palmolive Building - one of the great Art Deco masterpieces of downtown Chicago, The project was part renovation and part preservation, involving the painstaking restoration of beautiful original elements and the integration of new modern glass window bays that maximise retail presence for the client.

Schuler Shook investigated a number of products to fulfil their design requirements. Their choice was an acdc recessed linear wallwash luminaire featuring a micro louvre system designed to minimise glare and shield the LED light source from view. With the fittings integrated at street level, shielding was a critical element on this project to avoid dazzling passers by and preventing them from clearly seeing into the shop windows. IGLu measures just 65mm wide and is available with four beam angles and three tilt options for fine tuning of the lit effect.

Light is set into raised curb bases and skims up the light coloured cast iron panels at the base of the historic columns, revealing the decorative relief.
