Hi everyone. With another month gone by in the new world of being an integral part of the Zumtobel Group I thought that this would be a great opportunity to turn the camera on ourselves a little more and introduce what’s going on behind the scenes at acdc that many of you don’t get to see. So this month we’ve interviewed the team leaders in our production facility so that you can learn a little bit about where the quality and consistency of our products comes from. This month has also seen us provide an inspirational evening mockup for the iconic Beverley Minster, we even had some of the local people coming out to say they had never seen the Minster in so much detail and character, to hear local people talking about light and creative lighting and to see how they are amazed by it makes it all worthwhile. Alongside these features this month we have focussed on the new linear cove lighting luminaire Orelle Pro and also the INTU – Lakeside shopping centre where the cove lighting also became the feature lighting for the space. It would be great to do a feature on you, or on your new projects, keep us upto date and let us know your news – its always good to hear from you. Thanks all. Dan.

APAC LAUNCH

Our globe trotting Louise (Global Business Development Director) and Leah (Global Training Support Manager) travelled 10,000 miles to support our Zumtobel sales teams to launch acdc in APAC region. They attended 4 iconic venues in two countries, meeting with key Zumtobel sales people and over 400 lighting designers to introduce them to the acdc brand and receive training on our products. After a manic 10 days of constant travelling and meetings the feedback from everybody was extremely positive, everyone bought into the acdc brand and were excited to get creative with our products. As you can see by the photos, there was a real buzz about the launch and a big thank you goes out to all involved and look forward to our partnership in APAC in the future. Exciting things to come‌

IN APAC

“ My role is to train and educate both internal colleagues and external customers on everything acdc, such as brand, application and product on a Global scale ”

SYDNEY BRISBANE MELBOURNE AUCKLAND

LEAH MORRISEY GLOBAL TRAINING SUPPORT MANAGER What was the reason for the visit?

The aim of the APAC visit, was to officially launch acdc in this region. As JSB’s exclusivity as a distributor has ceased we wanted to introduce acdc as a long standing business in APAC, but now in collaboration with the Zumtobel Group.

What did you do?

At each location, we arrived early and placed acdc product in situe, so that when the guests started to arrive they could already see our product illuminating the space. The evening then consisted of Louise Frankland - Global Business Development Director, providing a 20 minute presentation covering the brand and story of the business, who we are, where we are and why people choose to work with acdc. I then went on to talk about Application, touching on products used, and local projects we had provided. Each Zumtobel team did an excellent job of selecting a location that was very much on brand for acdc. Louise, Alessandro and I started the Launch at Brisbane at the ‘Smoked Garage’ this was a custom motorbike warehouse and coffee shop.

The Motorbikes and rustic features provided a great space to show off the lit effects of acdc product. Then on to the Harley House in Melbourne, this was a funky cocktail bar where we descended the stairs into a space reminiscent of a New York style basement, with its exposed brick walls and pillars. The Sydney venue, was a private cinema room, with a stage to deliver our presentation and the neighbouring room offered a unique space to situ acdc products. Finally finishing our journey In Auckland, New Zealand, where the team had secured the Museum of Transport and Technology. This was a huge location with both internal and external spaces to illuminate. Who was involved? Alessandro Bessi, joined myself and Louise throughout the Launch, ensuring the smooth running of the events and carried the heavy stuff ;)

Team Leaders Typical Day

People Behind The Product

• 8-30am Team SQCDP Stand Up Meeting (Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery & People) facilitated by team members at the team SQCDP board. This is a 5 minute review of the previous days performance which is then visualised by a simple colour code of Green (on target) and Red (below target) days, we also take a look at what the day ahead looks like in regards to jobs due and labour requirements. • All this information from each team leader (or in their absence a team member) is then communicated at the 9am Stand Up Production Meeting which takes place on the shop floor and is a 5 to 10 minute review of Productions performance from the previous day. The meeting is attended by various departments including Production, Planning, Procurement, Engineering, HR, Quality, Despatch, Stores, Pick & Place; by having a representative from each of the relevant departments any issues raised can be quickly addressed.

Our brand values reflect across the whole business and as ‘one team’ we’d like to introduce you to the people behind the products. We talk to our Production Team Leaders whose roles vary from day to day including; management of the production facility, employee recruitment/development and implemention of their Accelerated Route to Lean Manufacture qualification.

• The team leaders supervise the production teams who work from available jobs on Epicor and are hand built following the latest working instructions available on Share Point. • Team leaders plan the labour resource required to achieve the production plan and ensure that production is done Safely, at the highest Quality, at the correct labour Cost, ensure products are Delivered on time whilst looking after and developing our People.

Kaizen week which was attended by people from all different departments of acdc and incorporates effective simple & low cost lean manufacturing techniques. • The fittings made in this area can vary in length from 100mm to 1800mm so the workspace has to be flexible enough to accommodate this. • IP20 rated products such as Orelle Pro and Ultra are manufactured and completed the same day. • Products with a rating of greater than IP20 are manufactured up to a certain point and then put on a burn-off test to reduce the VOC level within the LED before being encapsulated within the fitting. • Manufacture times can vary from <10mins for Ultra to 120mins for Special Integrex. • All products are tested numerous times during the build process to ensure the highest quality products are produced and are quality checked before being despatched. • As part of our lean journey here at acdc I have helped to setup and implement the 5S audit across Stores, Pick & Place, Production and Despatch.

of foot traffic required to complete a job, small orders are completed on the benches adjacent to the job shelf area and are directly next to the team computer. • The large scale orders are completed within the second half of the area which provides enough space to distribute large orders onto the benches and work on one process at a time. We have reduced the non-value added travel time by making the test equipment portable. The work within this area varies from single LED potted products to x48 LED products which require programming via a PC. • I am currently applying my Lean knowledge by assisting Rod Gregg and Adam Carmichael on a Product Teardown Project focusing on the Plaza and Fusion products, we have already begun this by doing video studies of the current manufacturing processes which will form part of the analysis for the project. • As well as the day to day team leader duties I am also involved in a lot of Continuous Improvement activities; whether that is introducing companies such as Tridonic to our SQCDP principles or our future state factory project.

Edition 06. June 2017 The acdc solution was to introduce a roller track system which is very low cost and not prone to breaking. This roller track system runs down the middle of the benches and comes into play when we have large scale orders (100+), the parts are kitted into trays and travel the length of the production line with operatives completing different operations before passing onto the next operative. The working instructions are a step by step guide to manufacturing our fittings and can be broken down to balance the production lines correctly.

Name - Steven Bancroft Team Leader – Downlights Length of service – 10 years Number of people in team – 6 people but varies depending on workload and has capacity for 20+ people over 2 production lines. Fittings made in the area include; Novus & Novus Mini, Air & Air Mini, Darc Pro, Gio and Arena • The Downlight area consist of 2 Linear production lines, these production lines can be utilised to produce 4 separate production lines if required. When looking at designing and implementing these production lines several options were considered including conveyor belt systems – as part of the research these were found to be costly and prone to breaking down therefore impacting production.

Although our products are hand built to order the introduction of air tools has improved the efficiency within this area. Small orders are built either by an individual operative or by a pair of operatives. • Manufacture times for products within this area vary from <5mins to 11mins the biggest factor being the size of order and the greatest efficiencies being realised on large orders. • All products are tested a number of times on our test jigs which were developed in house and reduce the time spent testing our fittings by up to 90%, prior to being inspected before despatch. • Continuous Improvement is something we strive for within our team and when the opportunity arises we optimize the build process by completing mini Kaizens on products such as line balancing exercises.

BEVERLEY MINSTER

“ acdc as part of the Zumtobel group has a great history and knowledge of outdoor architectural lighting, working with the lighting specifier on key historical architectural facades and plazas and it is proposed that the architectural lighting for Beverley Minster will be in a warm white 3000K white light”.

Beverley Minster sits at the very heart of the town of Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, with the existing church dating back to 1420. acdc as part of the Zumtobel Group have been invited to provide a new external architectural lighting scheme bringing the church to life in the hours of darkness, emphasising the historical importance, whilst appreciating the context of which it sits in relation to the people living close by and also the long views from the streets and longer views when coming into the town. A major restriction upon the new scheme is that we must use the existing locations to reduce the disruption on site. There will be major energy savings moving from the existing metal halide (2x400w) 800w surface mounted floodlights.

“ Reduction in energy used from approx. 18240w to 4400w – a total reduction of nearly 14000 watts providing clear energy savings and flexibility for the client.”

The images attached provide an overview of the mockup that was provided in May 2017 by acdc using a variety of optics with the Fusion 48 luminaire picking out the scale, height & detail of the Minster. The event gave the client and local people the opportunity to view the proposed lit effect, feedback we had was simply, “ WOW! I’ve never seen this level of detail on the Minster before, the light brings the Minster to life.” In addition to the single colour scheme, the client has requested a full RGBA solution using an additional layer of Fusion 48 luminaires to provide a colour wash upon the all faces of the façade to enable them to join in with and be associated with specific charity days eg :purple for World Prematurity Day, yellow for Marie Curie etc.

The proposed scheme will integrate new LED Fusion 48 surface mounted floodlights commissioned through a series of controllable scenes of light that enable the building to be framed and slowly revealed as the hours of darkness fall.

INTU - LAKESIDE SHOPPING CENTRE Intu Lakeside is a busy shopping centre set in a prime retail location just outside of London, and as you would expect the food hall is a popular destination for shoppers wishing to refuel and recharge their batteries. Situated on the third floor, the food hall area has recently been restyled to encourage further custom, with the new design offering increased visual prominence from the second floor retail level below. Early in the design process Intu recognised that lighting would be a key aspect of creating the dynamic and vibrant atmosphere they wanted, and invited Lighting Design International (LDI) to work in collaboration with retail specialists Rawls & Co to design the scheme. Orelle Pro was used as the light source for the undulating glass reinforced gypsum ceiling, as the long run lengths ensured all drivers could be remote from the detail, to ensure no shadowing or complex cabling. Quick release leader cables, and joints also facilitate made easy maintenance.

To highlight the columns that demarcate the space, LDI selected the acdc Fino. White for its smaller size and further flexibility, wrapping them around the curved profile to wash light down the columns. In order to dim and balance the lighting effects DALI constant voltage drivers were used to control the luminaires.
