Coming up in this issue I will also share some of the images from the first two Nightgiests that have taken place in the UK. If you don’t know what they are, the Nightgiest is an evening for around 50no. invited guests (lighting designers, architects, consultants) in a great location, they are put into small teams of between 7-10, given a multi brand external application presentation and then set free on a specific space and compete with the other teams for the best lit effect, and then we have dinner and award a winner! We still have 3 more events to come next month.
The three main aims for
LDCfocus are

Overview of the team, written by Zolt, the team leader
In the LDC in Belgrade the Zumtobel’s triple P motto is being lived to its fullest - PASSION, PERFORMANCE, PARTNERSHIP The LDC in Belgrade, Serbia was founded in 2015 serving the End User channel and opened a year later., there was already a small Zumtobel office, consisting of only four members at the time, they were soon surprised and positively overwhelmed about the future expension. In May 2016, Six young and eager architects and electrical engineers were hired and trained in the ways of lighting. In the beginning the team was visited by Dieter Safarik, Roberta Figini and Tobias Jonk for a first round of training where the team received a detailed overview about key account projects. Two product managers, Leif Escher and Stefan Bildstein spent two days with the team passing on their extensive knowledge in retail and office applications. The team has kept it’s head above the water for almost a year now and in this period a perpetual development has been carried out in terms of individual and group learning. The team is responsible for providing CAD drawings, photometric calculations and specifications for our sales teams across the BEE region. They started with designing supermarkets in the beginning, but as they got familiar with the ZG portfolio, different projects have been handled regarding spec channel too. The team members have become independent in their daily work. For example, Miona Zdravkovic is responsible for Reserved stores which are part of the LPP company, a huge Polish clothing retailer. Filip Raskovic handles projects for the always positive Netherlands sales force - Vomar, Lidl, Coop, Q-Park and Dirk vd Broek. Aleksandra Grbic is in daily correspondence with the Croatian sales crew. Dorde Krstivojevic has become a master lighting designer when it comes to Billa and Penny supermarkets. Furthermore, the team is blessed with one more Miona, a rare name in these parts, but in spite of that Miona Mijic is accountable for a huge number of Lidl projects from Belgium that she keeps receiving on daily basis & probably dreams of them during night. Nikola Paunovic, with all his duties towards end user projects, is among the first ones to step in when it comes to spec projects and manages a large number of those together with the rest of the team. At last, but not least, we have me- Zolt Takac, the team leader and the coordinator of the LDC in Belgrade. Maja Kraker and Goran Asceric are the latest addition to the team and their responsibilities lay in the field of Outdoor Public Lighting.

Zolt
What projects are you working on at the moment? Lighting solution and offer for illumination of 5 facades in the city of Nis, also interior illumination and facade illumination of the church St. Sava in Belgrade.
How would you describe your job? What does your standard day look like? Exciting and demanding. Right now our office is trying to develop business in outdoor application, not so easy. My standard day consists of many activities, such as having communication with colleagues within “Zumtobel Group” (that’s how I met acdc - great acdc guys), writing dozen mails, having phone calls, meetings (too much coffee, really), going on the road…

How did you get into lighting design? Where did it all begin? Everything started in Zumtobel. I started when the LDC was founded. I and five other colleagues, we were all new in lighting. But it was an easy start due to good support of our older colleagues who knew how to pass on their knowledge. What projects are you working on at the moment? Currently I am working on a Lidl project for Holland.

How would you describe your job? What does your standard day look like? Very dynamic and exciting. Every day is an opportunity to reach new goals and break boundaries. What’s the most rewarding/best things about your job? Working on interesting projects, for sure. Until now, I did a couple of bigger projects where I have widened my skills in lighting design. In the end it gave me a lot of satisfaction.

What’s the most challenging aspects of what you do/your job? The biggest challenge for me is to separate friendship and work. The atmosphere in the LDC is always positive and on high level, so sometimes it can move the focus away from designing, but we succeed to turn this into teamwork and make that our advantage. Business never suffers and our spirits fly high. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? When I was younger I wanted to be an actor. Now, I only act in the office. What are you having for dinner tonight? Since its Friday, a big glass of good Serbian wine

How long have you been at Zumtobel? I have been with the company for three years now. I have started in May 2014 when the office was still quite small. There was only four of us. Two lighting designers and two sales managers. Back than I couldn’t even fathom the idea that one day we might have a Lighting Design Centre in Belgrade, let alone that I am going to be in charge of it. How did you get into lighting design? Everything started with Zumtobel. This is the first lighting company that I have worked for. Now, when I look back I see that I was really fortunate to make it through the interviewing process. With my architectural background and easy-going attitude I landed the job, but quickly found out that it comes nothing close to easy. The first year’s initiation was a fiery baptism but as time passed the pieces fell just right into place. Still, I feel that there is much to learn regarding lighting design but I feel much more confident now. What projects are you working on at the moment? I am mainly coordinating projects that keep pouring in. When everybody is packed with projects I jump in to help out. I do all sorts of projects which are usually about indoor lighting. I have little experience in outdoor public lighting but I like to tackle those projects too. At the moment I am doing a lighting design for a façade. And doing so, I have discovered the power of Vivaldi Façade which I find to be a remarkable little tool for quick visualizations.
Zolt
How would you describe your job? I love my job. Being a lighting designer let’s me perceive spaces in a different manner. Needless to say that every time I enter a building, shop, flat, gym or stadium my head turns towards the ceiling and I keep bumping into people. I believe this goes for every lighting designer. What can we do? It is a constant process of learning, analysing and figuring out new ways to use light. So this goes without saying that being a lighting designer is not only an eight-hour job, but rather a whole day (and night) long occupation.

What’s the most rewarding/best things about your job? Sometimes a project can be nerve-racking due to deadlines and all sorts of complications but coming up with new lighting solutions and seeing your design finally being implemented into a building gives me personally a lot of satisfaction. What’s the most challenging aspects of what you do/your job? For me personally the most challenging thing is to keep a positive working atmosphere. I have an amazing crew of lighting designers who have quickly become independent in their daily work. We work hard and we play hard, all in it’s due time. Having such colleagues it seems that no challenge is great enough that we can’t cope with. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I am an adventurous type and can’t keep myself from being in nature. I love to snowboard, wakeboard, skateboard, kitesurf, scuba dive… what can I tell you, I am a sucker for extreme sports. Also, when I get my hands on a book from the epic fantasy genre I turn into a real bookworm. What are you having for dinner tonight? The kid in me always prefers pizza and coke but since I am 30+ years old I tend to eat healthy. Too much belly fat all around. So it is probably going to be some kind of oath meal with no sugar, salt or any kind of spice

How did you get into lighting design? Where did it all begin? It started in February 2008, when I finished college. My father who was an electrical contractor has asked a friend of his, who actually worked in Minel-Schreder (member of a Schreder group GIE), if I could start as an intern there. After my internship ended I was asked to stay and there it has all begun.

What projects are you working on at the moment? Currently I am running a project about a façade lighting of Hotel Bristol with acdc. Also there is this football stadium in Istanbul and a couple of projects about street lighting. How would you describe your job? What does your standard day look like? My job as a lighting designer is cool. I really love it. I love solving difficult challenges regarding lighting.

What’s the most rewarding/best things about your job? Most of all I love traveling, meeting with people around the world and sharing the experience in the ways of lighting. This job let’s me do all of it. What’s the most challenging aspects of what you do/your job? For me the most challenging aspect is to finish a project in a very short time and by doing that to also provide a better design then our competitors. I love going to a building site and solve on-site problems when they unexpectedly occur. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? I'm a complex person when it comes to life’s little joys. I like riding my mountain bike, clubbing, guitar playing, playing video games, etc… What are you having for dinner tonight? I don’t mind as long as it is meat. I am a badass carnivore on top of the food chain. My cousin owns a meat factory

St. Sava Church Maja writes : The project came from our partner company and the contractor who has good connections with church authorities. One cold winter night (around -8°C), we made a mock-up and showed lighting effects on the facade and inside the church. Not only the contractor was more than impressed but the bishop, too. He was present to see how it would look like. After the testing, we went for hot wine because we couldn’t feel our feet anymore, but without the bishop, of course. Now we are waiting to see the result of our offer. acdc products specified : BLADE MINI, BLADE MAX, FUSION 12, ACCENTO, ARTEMIS

Fusion 48 & 24 sat at the base of the Castle, close to the vertical provides a strong dynamic surface graze up the façade with a wide beam Fusion 48 to provide a flood over the façade.
Nestled in the heart of Lancashire's Ribble Valley, set amongst some of Britain’s most stunning natural scenery is the small historical town of Clitheroe. Dominating this peaceful Pennine skyline for over 800 years is the motte and bailey Castle of Clitheroe, which received a dramatic facelift for one night only thanks to the Fusion flood light range. The temporary transformations were achieved using a blend of acdc products to create a series of intense colour wash effects upon the castle facades. A mixture of deep blues, intense greens and burnt oranges perfectly grazed the castle’s exterior stone walls with ease with contrasting reds positioned inside to illuminate the circular opening on the front castle wall to add a level of contrast and depth.

Close offset spotlight with narrow or flood optic picking out the architectural detail and height,
Tightly controlled dynamic white LED luminaires with a range from 2700K to 6500K. This solution allows the hue to be tuned to suit the building materials of each façade, and to be subtly adjusted according to season. acdc worked closely with GIA Equation to fully understand their requirements and to realise the most appropriate solution from their broad portfolio of LED products. To achieve all the design requirements, acdc produced a specially adapted PLAZA fitting from the Floods range, along with adapted versions of the BLADE and FINO Linear. GIA Equation commented “acdc’s ability to develop one of their existing products, was key to us fulfilling the design brief; as at the time of the design, we believed there wasn’t a narrow beam dynamic exterior uplight on the market that was small enough to provide the result we were looking for.” Modifying the original two channel dynamic white PLAZA fittings, acdc created independent levels of 2700K and 6000K colour temperatures for different scene settings. Multiple optics were installed within the fittings, including 12R to punch up the height of columns and 18R to wash the base of the columns and blend the 2 different colour temperatures. For such a large-scale high profile project, colour consistency was essential. Cree XPG LEDs, which are used as standard within a number of acdc luminaires, were chosen due to Cree’s tight binning process. This, along with acdc’s secondary binning process, which ensures all LEDs are within a 2 step MacAdam ellipse, guaranteed continuity throughout.
