Frankie & Bennys/Chiquitos
Client / The Restaurant Group Lighting Design / Harper Signs acdc products / BLADE
Ipswich, UK
The Restaurant Group operates over 400 restaurants and pub restaurants within the UK, amongst which are two of the most popular restaurant brands in the UK today. Frankie & Benny’s has long been a firm favourite with families, couples and friends, serving classic American-Italian dishes in a fun, lively environment; and Chiquitos is the place for spicy Mexican favourites, Tex-Mex tastes and cool cocktails. Part of the Group’s expansion plans included two restaurants in Ipswich. The opening prompted the design of an external lighting scheme intended to underscore the fun and vibrant nature of both brands, and with the potential to be rolled out across other sites nationwide.
Project brief Signage and exterior lighting consultants Harper Signs of Newcastle approached acdc with the challenge of creating a standout lighting spectacle that would make the restaurants instantly recognisable. There were tight building deadlines to consider, so the fittings needed to be available within very short lead times to ensure that the schemes would be completed prior to the ‘grand openings’.
acdc’s solution The concept from Harper Signs focussed on a signature colour for each of the two brands – a highly effective way to create the required impact and visual brand recognition. A vibrant red was selected for Frankie and Benny’s and a warm 2700K source was chosen for Chiquitos. Working closely with Harper Signs to deliver the best lighting solution for the installation, acdc proposed using their BLADE luminaire.

The interior concept and furniture design created by MRA combines grand details and modern glamour with a playful spirit. PNLD worked with MRA to create an integrated lighting scheme where the boundaries between architecture and lighting are blurred. The luminaires needed to be integrated within several intricate architectural details and further restrictions presented themselves due to the store’s listed status. PNLD chose to work with acdc, as they knew our product range could respond to this challenging but exciting brief. Commenting on the project, Ellie Coombs of PNLD remarked, “As a site measured product, which needed to be integrated with several other elements, it was essential that we had confidence in the manufacturer we chose; acdc are experienced and reliable and we knew we would get a professional service from them”.

Intu Lakeside is a busy shopping centre set in a prime retail location just outside of London, and as you would expect the food hall is a popular destination for shoppers wishing to refuel and recharge their batteries. Situated on the third floor, the food hall area has recently been re-styled to encourage further custom, with the new design offering increased visual prominence from the second floor retail level below. Early in the design process Intu recognised that lighting would be a key aspect of creating the dynamic and vibrant atmosphere they wanted, and invited Lighting Design International (LDI) to work in collaboration with retail specialists Rawls & Co to design the scheme.
Project brief The brief to LDI involved using light as a signal to draw customers up the escalators into the food court space, as well as contributing to the creation of a pleasant yet dynamic environment with plenty of visual interest. The architectural and lighting scheme set out to create a more intimate atmosphere, by lowering the customers eye line away from the previously up lit glass roof structure. This was achieved by introducing crossbeams that both interrupt roof views and conceal lighting equipment. The food hall can be seen as two distinct areas. Under the glass roof there is an abundance of natural light, however under the deep soffits there is comparatively little natural light. The challenge to LDI was to use lighting

Located in over 100 of the world’s most infamous cities, the Lancel boutiques are situated amongst the retail elite. When brand designer, Christophe Pillet decided it was time for a complete refurbishment, he tasked French Lighting Designer, Philippe Mombellet to create a scheme that featured an eco-friendly light concept that integrates the principles of energy saving and sustainable development.
Project brief The scheme was to create the same atmosphere as in the 1930’s movies, using a kind of “chiaroscuro” (light to dark) effect in each boutique. Lancel wanted their clients to be welcomed by a warm and comfortable ambiance which would attract them immediately to the products exposed in each recess. Maggies Cancer Caring Centres are drop-in centres where people, including patients, friends and family can get the comprehensive support they need to help them to live with, through and beyond cancer. The centre in Newcastle, designed by the Cullinan Studio, is just a short walk from the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) at Freeman Hospital. Speirs + Major’s design for the lighting creates a welcoming, domestic ambience that is a deliberate contrast to clinical hospital environments. They were also tasked with achieving a BREEAM excellent rating, and all on a tight budget largely funded by charity donations.
Project brief The design of the lighting is varied in light intensity and flexible in control. Wall mounted luminaires, low-level task lights, alcove lighting, and pendants in warm white provide both the functional and accent lighting. These layers of light create a pleasant, homely environment and complement the timber finishes. Local lighting control provides visitors with the opportunity to adjust the lighting to suit their individual preferences.

Lobby, One St Peter’s Square
Client / Argent LLP, Greater Manchester Property Venture Architect / Glenn Howells Lighting Designer / 4D Lighting Engineering Contractor / Shepherd Engineering Services (SES) acdc products / AZETA, FRAME , 360+
Manchester, UK
One St Peter’s Square is a handsomely remodeled 14-storey office block, located in the heart of Manchester’s prestigious civic centre. The competition winning design by GHA re-invented the once tired 1970’s building into a modern BREEAM Excellent rated commercial workplace, with active retail and cultural facilities. Situated the south side of the historic square, the design is grand, yet deliberately understated, featuring a classical tripartite stone façade that allows it to sit comfortably amongst the notable heritage buildings in it’s proximity. The majority of the space is currently let to business advisory firm KPMG.
Project brief Bearing in mind its prominent location and high-end specification, the lobby of the building is designed to create impact, whilst remaining an inherently public space. The architects worked to ensure the space would feel welcoming, despite the large scale and volume, and used materials that would create a dialogue with the square and encourage people to enter. Taking cues from the Royal Festival Hall and hotel receptions, the feel is prestigious and lively whilst not becoming intimidating. Though undeniably grand in proportion, the decoration is clean and simple, with robust, refined materials. No statement chandelier is in place, instead the lighting is provided by recessed strip and downlights complemented by domestic-scale standing lamps.
acdc’s solution Achieving the required levels and punchy accent in the large space using recessed lighting was the challenge for lighting designers 4D Lighting. Having
In order to suit the architectural detailing however, some minor modifications would be required. As Steve Sutcliffe of 4D Lighting explains “SES of Manchester had asked us to provide a working solution to the project. Whilst they were very close to being what we needed, the acdc fittings at this stage did not fit the bill in its entirety and so directly after the meeting I took the enquiry directly to the acdc technical office in Barrowford. The brief was to change the finishes on the trim and tweak the body of the fitting. This was done both expediently, whilst also not affecting the budget that we had to work within. Additionally acdc were able to supply the products with the specific modular cabling system being used by SES, thereby ensuring ease of installation and

acdc products / 360+
When Lead Designer James Sultan and the lighting design team of Studio Lux, LLC in Seattle designed the lighting for the newest Porsche dealership in this discerning area of Bellevue, WA he looked for a fully integrated, yet powerful LED gimbal to illuminate the displayed automobiles in the area right inside the showroom, with the objective to really make them sparkle in all their beauty. acdc 360+ delivered just what was needed. A trimless solution of a small, yet powerful double gimbal LED fixture, with field-changeable optics and 2-step MacAdam ellipse binning. Even more important was acdc’s flexibility, allowing fixture modifications to be quickly incorporated to accommodate the irregular joist placement in the curving soffit construction. Easy installation, facilitated through use of a plaster-in frame, with postfinished-ceiling fixture installation and quick-disconnect to the dedicated driver/j-box, allowed the contractor to through-wire fixtures. The quality and ease of usage of acdc’s 360+ made it a perfect choice for this exquisitely designed Porsche dealership.

Royal Court Theatre Liverpool, UK
Client / Royal Court Liverpool Trust Architect / Henry Sumner
Lighting Design / Buro Happold acdc products / ARTEMIS
The Royal Court Theatre has been at the heart of Liverpool culture for nearly 200 years, first opening in 1826. The theatre was destroyed by fire in 1933 and rebuilt in 1938 in the current Art Deco style of the era. Since the summer of 2005 the building has been extensively refurbished, and has undergone something of a renaissance in the last three years.
Project brief The client, Royal Court Liverpool Trust wanted to renovate and modernise the theatre, whilst highlighting the original art deco architecture within the main hall. Buro Happold worked closely with AHMM architects to develop a lighting scheme that would complement their design and vision for the space.
acdc’s solution
The downlight has a choice of soft curved reflector cups that can be applied to the fitting to guarantee a neat finish and enables the luminaire to blend seamlessly into the ceiling architecture. The adjustable luminaire (to 35°) has a virtual pivot point to harness maximum light when fully adjusted and can be installed prior to the ceiling being finished. This allowed Buro Happold to adjust the luminaire to fit the sloped ceiling and fix the luminaire in the correct

Swedbank
Client / Humlegarden Fastigheter (Owner) Architect / 3XN Lighting Design / Black Ljusdesign Electrical Contractor / Bravida acdc products / AZETA, PLAZA 10
Stockholm, Sweden Swedbank’s new international headquarters by architectural firm 3XN is an innovative interpretation of the core values of the organisation: openness, simplicity and care. These have been translated into a modern architectural space, with an emphasis on transparency and the creation of a good social environment. Stretching across an entire block, the building takes the form of a triple V structure - a design concept intended to both break up the volume and make it easier to connect both people and spaces. The largely transparent facades bring in plenty of daylight, highlighting the spectacular semi-public atrium spaces. Natural wayfinding is another key part of the design, with two spiral staircases providing key orientation points. Social spaces are placed around a central axis facilitating interaction and good internal communication for employees.

GPO, Westin
Sydney, Australia
Lighting Design / Point Of View acdc distribution partner / JSB Lighting acdc products / ARTEMIS
Set amongst commercial towers of the Sydney Central Business District is the heritage building of the GPO. It is a prominent piece of Australian architectural history with classical sandstone and granite carvings, statues and ornamental work. The regal statue of Queen Victoria with her coat of arms and surrounding cherubs guard the historical façade. Crowning the facade, the recently restored clock tower bells ring Westminster chimes on the hour. The building had never been illuminated at night as previous light fixtures were difficult to maintain. Point Of View were appointed lighting designers to reinvigorate the façade and create a lighting scheme to enhance the night time image of Martin Place and its surroundings.
Project brief The design scope consisted of the relighting of the clock tower and facades of Martin Place, George Street and Pitt

acdc’s solution acdc’s ARTEMIS was chosen because of its reliability and compact size. It can also be installed in the most challenging of exterior environments due to an IP68 rating - an important issue in today’s ever changing climate. ARTEMIS offers excellent beam control, allowing for the variety of different features to be distinguished. The decorative arches of the colonnade are subtly lit, allowing the faces of the Heads of State to be accented. Using light and shade the dentals, statues and carvings are revealed at the mid-levels - this is achieved by a ARTEMIS narrow beam grazing the textured stonework, which were previously encased in darkness.

Woodeaves is a new-build residential project designed for the Woodfield family. Having previously lived in a dark 1970s mock Tudor house with many separate rooms, when considering the design of their new house they put ‘light and bright’ right at the top of their agenda. The house is oriented to the south west, and features a number of large social spaces including an open plan kitchen living area and a two storey basement that houses a pool, Jacuzzi, gym and sauna. Sunlight floods in through large windows creating a bright, warm feeling. The artificial lighting is designed to maintain this feeling as darkness falls, bringing the best architectural features to the fore, whilst the equipment remains inconspicuous, and uses as little power as possible.

acdc’s solution Louise Woodfield, the interior designer, set out to use the lighting to showcase the most beautiful features of the house. Internally, Louise began with a base layer of acdc STORM architectural downlights, supplementing these with wall lights and table lamps for ambient light. Concealed coves and troughs containing acdc BLADE linear LED fittings create an even glow of light to highlight feature ceilings, and acdc ELECTRA wallwasher type fittings are positioned to highlight selected features. Louise explains:

Outside, grazing light highlights the texture and warmth of the brick, giving the house beautiful night-time presence. High impact acdc MAGNA fittings have been recessed into the sandstone flagging, their focussed beam lighting up the full three storey height yet only consuming 7W of power. acdc GALLI compact in-ground marker lights are used elsewhere to highlight small external features, their compact size making them blend neatly into their surroundings, For the planting and garden perimeter, Louise chose the acdc SPEK – a discrete compact single LED spotlight, suited to the most challenging of environments.
