With richness of performing arts culture and exuberant market vitality, People’s Square Rim of Shanghai Huangpu District used to be a “Theatrical Port” in China. During the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan, with concern from Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Municipal Government, support and guidance from the Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV，and encouragement from all sectors of the society, Performing Arts Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim has made a considerable and rapid progress in increasing theatre resources, enriching performing works, innovating operating management and improving audience experience. For the next Five-Year Plan, Performing Arts Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim will dedicate with all efforts to building a place that inherit and innovate traditional arts, a platform to display international theatre works, an incubator and exhibition for original plays, a demonstration area of performing arts integration. It also endeavors to create a favorable ambience of “Performing Arts in Huangpu”, and attempts to become the leading force aiming to build Shanghai into a capital of performing arts in Asia as well as an international cultural centre. Xintiandi Festival is an ongoing important incubator project of arts festival, which is a part of the 13th Five-Year Plan of Performing Arts Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim. This festival will give full play to the advantages of “Huaihai Road — Xintiandi”, a destination for young, stylish people and commercial complexes. Centering around Xintiandi and fully using cafés, museums, restaurants, atrium and other public spaces, this festival is about to present for audience intensively with the latest, outstanding works from domestic and abroad, and become the very first and innovative arts festival in China that utilizes both the indoor and outdoor spaces of a commercial block. The festival will be annually held in June since its debut in the year of 2016. Within two weeks from 6th to 19th June, 2016, the first Xintiandi Festival will take place in Shanghai Xintiandi area, notable as the parlor of Shanghai. Seventeen brilliant works will be performed by artists worldwide, including the UK, France, Australia, Czech, mainland China, Taiwan region and so on. Varieties of shows such as audio-visual show, new circus, mime, immersive theatre, object play, cafe play, busking, audience participatory play will be brought onto stage in cafés, bars, restaurants, and museums, even in a tent theatre or on squares. Featured by diversity and novelty, most of the works and original plays will premiere in China, rarely seen before. This festival is distinctive in ground breaking performing spaces, viewing experience within close range, intimate interaction among top artists, fringe works and audiences. It will lead a new trend of contemporary performing arts and open up a brand new vision for performing arts festival in China. The festival is a significant representation of Chinese arts festivals in light of innovation in experience, quality and operating mechanism. With the Publicity Department of Shanghai Huangpu District Committee and Culture Bureau of Shanghai Huangpu District as the sponsor and instructor, the festival is organized together by Shanghai Xintiandi and Beijing 707 N-Theatre, and curated by “Fringe Showcase”, an award-winning institute and arts festival curating team with international vision.

表演艺术新天地 2016 Xintiandi Festival 2016 上海市黄浦区“环人民广场”地区，曾是中国的戏码头，演艺文化深厚，市场活力充沛。“十二五”期间，在市委市政府的关心下，在市委宣传部和市文广局的支持和指导下，在社会各界的推动下，环人民广场演艺活力区在增加剧场资源、丰富演出内容、创新运营管理、提升观众体验等方面取得了长足进展。 “十三五”期间，环人民广场演艺活力区将全力打造传统艺术的传承创新地、国际戏剧的展示交流地、原创剧目的孵化展演地、演艺跨界融合的示范引领地，努力营造“演艺在黄浦”的良好氛围，努力成为上海建设亚洲演艺之都的主力军和国际文化大都市的核心引领区。 “表演艺术新天地”是《“环人民广场演艺活力区”十三五发展规划》中的艺术节展类重点孵化项目，该艺术节展活动将发挥“淮海路—新天地”年轻时尚人流云集、商业综合体集聚的优势，以新天地为核心，利用咖啡馆、博物馆、餐厅、中庭等公共空间，为观众集中展现最新的国内外优秀剧目，打造全国首个利用商业街区室内外空间举办的创新形态艺术节展。这一活动将从 2016 年起，于每年 6 月定期举办， 2016 年为该活动首次举办。 2016 年 6 月 6 日—19 日这两周当中，上海最重要的城市客厅“上海新天地”片区，将迎来首届“表演艺术新天地”艺术节活动。来自英国、法国、澳大利亚、捷克、中国、中国台湾等国家和地区的 17 个精彩剧目，将于新天地的帐篷剧场、咖啡馆、酒吧、餐厅、博物馆、广场等空间次第上演，其中包括户外多媒体影音秀、新马戏、默剧、浸没式戏剧、创意物件剧、咖啡剧、街头表演和观众参与型剧目。这 17 部作品剧目形式新颖多样，绝大部分剧目均为中国首演或是原创首演，为中国观众见所未见。其极具突破性的表演空间、零距离的观看体验，全球顶尖艺术家、前沿作品与观众的亲密互动，将引领中国当代表演艺术领域的新潮流，是中国表演艺术节展领域的一次重大突破。该艺术节是中国艺术节领域内容创新、体验创新、机制创新的重要代表性艺术节展，由中共黄浦区委宣传部、黄浦区文化局联合发起并作为指导单位，由新天地、北京柒零柒恩剧团联合主办，由中国最具国际视野的“前沿剧展”策展团队整体策展。

【策展人手记 / Curator’s Notes】

从梦开始的艺术节 A Festival Begins With Dream 水晶艺术节策展人金融学博士社会学博士后新天地，是一处位于上海市老城区中心地带的综合商业片区，是人称“魔都”的上海最具代表性的一个区域。

Xintiandi, a commercial complex located right at the heart of Shanghai old town, is the most distinguished area in Modu (a nickname for the magical city Shanghai).

在这里，传统、现代、时尚、古典、奢华、简朴，令人难以置信地交织在一起，像是“魔幻现实主义”的一个立体注脚。由传统石库门建筑改造而成的餐厅、酒吧、咖啡馆，穿插其间，与石库门比邻的新商业建筑群近在咫尺，无论是国际游客还是城中小资，都会到此一游。而不远处的吉安路，又仍是一幅上世纪 80 年代的古朴风貌。

It is a combination of both traditional and modern, classic and contemporary, luxurious and simple, a vivid footnote to magic realism. The area is interspersed with restaurants, bars and cafes renovated from traditional Shikumen-style buildings, and also in close proximity to new business complexes. It’s frequented by local bourgeoisies as well as oversea visitors. The nearby Ji’an road, still perserves the landscape of the 80’s.

一年前的 6 月，当我们受邀在这个区域策划一个与表演艺术相关的大型活动时，内心既兴奋，又忐忑。兴奋是因为太具有挑战性，忐忑是因为知道难度过高、可行性很小。但是抱着试一试的态度，8 月底，我们在结束了每年一度的爱丁堡之行后，趁着看了 80 多个戏的 “宿醉感”，抛了一个方案给新天地——它包括了 17 个专业演出，需要用到整个片区大概 10 处不同空间，都不是剧场，而是餐厅、酒吧、咖啡馆、博物馆、户外、街头，所有节目前后共持续 2 周，演出场次约 200 场，涉及艺术家 150 多人，观众预计可达 2 万人——这些，已经是一个不折不扣的艺术节体量了。在这 17 个演出里，我把这些年来所有我看过并想做的、但在正常剧场里难以实现的、或是完全没有办法通过卖票来达成收支平衡的、最爱的作品，统统放了进去。它们在形态上多种多样，可谓“一戏一格”，包括新马戏、舞蹈剧场、默剧、音乐、多媒体音乐绘画、咖啡剧、环境戏剧、浸没式戏剧、行动剧场，等等等等。即使那些最专业的人士，对于这些形态，估计也所见不多。

作者简介：水晶，金融学博士，社会学博士后，是中国当代非常有影响力的学者、艺术节策展人，北京大学、南京大学等高校特邀授课专家。现为“爱丁堡前沿剧展”、“西溪国际艺术节”、“表演艺术新天地”等中国重要的艺术节策展人。 Crystal D. Finance Ph.D & Sociology Postdoctoral She is an important scholar and festival curator in China, a visiting professor and lecturer at Peking University and Nanjing University. Now she is the curator of Edinburgh Showcase in China, Xixi International Arts Festival, Xintiandi Festival and other arts festivals in China.

我把方案扔出去的时候，说实话，真的没指望它会被接受。它的理想主义色彩，完全超越了中国当下表演艺术领域的现实语境，不像一个方案，而更像一个梦。许多专业的艺术节都未必敢这么做，更何况一个商业地产公司？没想到的是，这个方案几乎在第一稿的阶段，就被新天地的运营方全盘接受了。接下来，另一个更有力的支持者开始进入——黄浦区委宣传部。立足建设环人民广场演艺活力区、丰富市民大众精神文化生活，他们正在积极推进表演艺术与商业旅游的深度融合，并有意把新天地作为突破点。他们的胸怀和视野，令人钦佩；他们的务实和高效，使整件事情进入运行的快车道。由于黄浦区的支持，使得这次艺术节的相当一部分演出，可以以 100 元的低票价和完全免费的形态进行，令更多的大众得以藉此机会亲近世界最前沿的表演艺术作品。更重要的是，在这样一个开放形态的商业和社区环境中感受表演艺术，更容易让普通人对这个城市产生深刻的情感，这是和在那种常规形态的大剧院看演出完全不一样的感受。这，恰恰是 Fringe 的精髓所在——自由，平等，开放。在艺术面前，我们不分彼此，共享此刻。

Last June, when we were invited as the curator of a major event related with performing arts, we were both excited and nervous as it was such a challenging work with lots of difficulties and boundaries ahead. Last August, we were overwhelmed by over 80 shows after our annual trip to Edinburgh and then we drew up a plan for Xintiandi. Seventeen works will be happening in over 10 different places in Xintiandi---restaurants, bars, museums and even outdoors and on the street. The event will last for 2 weeks on end with over 200 performances and more than 150 artists. The audience number is expected to reach 20,000. This is definitely of a festival scale. Over the past years I have seen many works that I like, but can be hardly staged in a conventional theatre nor can it be balanced by box office income. I selected those works into my plan. These shows are diverse in forms, including new circus, dance theatre, mime, music, audio-visual show, café play, environmental theatre, immersive theatre, busking, mobile theatre and so on. These forms are rarely seen even among many theatre specialists. To be honest, I did not have high expectation when I delivered the plan. It is, more like a dream than a plan, something beyond the current context of performing arts in China. Many festivals would not embrace these art forms, let alone a real estate company. However, it is incredible that Xintiandi accepted the first draft of the plan. Then we were joined by a strong supporter, the Publicity Department of Shanghai Huangpu District Committee. They aim to construct the Performing Art Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim and enrich the mental and cultural life of the public. They’re dedicated to carry a deeper integration of performing arts and commercial tourism with Xintiandi as the breakthrough. Their mind and vision are admirable. And their pragmatic attitudes and working efficiency push the whole thing forward with a giant leap. Thanks to the support of Huangpu District, some of the most cutting-edge works are accessible to more people, with just 100 RMB for one ticket, or even free. More importantly, it is easier for people to arouse their profound emotions and strengthen the links with the city by experiencing performing arts in such an open community and business environment. The feelings will be entirely different from whatever they had in a traditional theatre. This is what the Fringe is all about: liberty, equality and openness. We are all one when it comes to art. While looking back at the moment I handed over the project, I wondered what indeed impressed Xintiandi ？ Perhaps it is because we share the same dream. May 27th, 2016

Company Introduction Spitfire Company is an artistic company that includes works of physical, visual and dance theatre. It is currently one of the most progressive ensembles of author theatre in the Czech Republic. The most important and characteristic aspects of the ensemble’s work are: searching of an original physical language of each particular performance, emphasis on experiencing performer’s state of being that generates very present emotions, dealing with a human’s limitation and his/her existential situation. Petr Boháč, is a director and choreographer from the Czech Republic. He is one of the leading proponents of physical and visual theatre in Central Europe. About the show Shanghai Xintiandi, known for traditional Shikumen-style architecture and new commercial spaces, will renew its stunning glamor because of 2016 Xintiandi Festival. Young Chinese artist, WEN Na(CHEN Xingxing) will use her brush to present a live-drawing show so as to record the very exciting moment in Xintiandi. Tourists and audiences will have the chance to encounter this painter, well known at home and abroad, and watch her improvising on a large easel and accomplishing a work named Arts Xintiandi: A New Vision. It not only contains the architecture complexes and crowds of people, but also displays the outstanding performances from 17 shows of 2016 Xintiandi Festival. This interactive process could be best described by the poem of Bian Zhilin “As you are enjoying the scenery on a bridge/ Upstairs on a tower people are watching you.” The work is commissioned by 2016 Xintiandi Festival and will premiere on the festival.

About the show Live performance art with a difference! The live chemistry between musician and artist delivers a unique fusion of painting, music and projection featuring world class performers. Russian artist Maria Rud paints onto a specially designed light box and a projection artist beams her paintings, as they are created, onto the walls and architecture of the chosen venue. Live music provides both the inspiration and rhythm for the images that are created. The audience enjoy not just beautiful paintings on (often stunning and historically significant) buildings but also the process of painting itself as they witness each brush stroke. 艺术家玛利亚·露德出生在莫斯科，自 7 岁起学习艺术，毕业于莫斯科苏里科夫美术学院后，她又在圣彼得堡文化艺术学院获得了电影学学位。同时玛利亚以艺术家的身份为莫斯科的国立动画工作室、国家电视台工作，并参与创立了位于爱丁堡和约克的 DOM 文化项目。玛利亚·露德自 1991 年起就开始办展，在俄罗斯、瑞典、瑞士、英国举办过数不胜数的个人作品展览。

Born in Moscow, Maria Rud studied fine art from the age of seven, graduating from Surikov School of Art Moscow and gaining a second degree in film from the Academy of Culture, St Petersburg. Maria also worked as an artist for Souzmyltfilm, Moscow (State Animation Studios) and State TV, and she co-founded the Cultural project DOM in Edinburgh and York. Maria Rud has exhibited since 1991 and had numerous solo exhibitions in Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.

Douglas Yeh Lee

音乐家李带菓是中国新音乐语境下的代表人物。他的音乐综合了多种亚洲乐器（尤其是中国乐器）和西方乐器，融合了先锋派传统和古典音乐传统，是一场通过文化混血身份进行的前卫音乐艺术移植实验。李带菓自 5 岁起接受音乐训练，启蒙是西方古典音乐（小提琴、钢琴），在进入大学后又广泛涉猎中国传统音乐（二胡、琵琶）和低音提琴。他在圣地亚哥州立大学学习文学与音乐，主攻文学理论与世界音乐（包括芬兰民乐、中国传统音乐、卡纳提克音乐等）以及当代古典作曲及即兴创作。

Douglas Yeh Lee is one of the leading figures in China’s new music context. His compositions blend a variety of Asian (especially Chinese) instruments with western instruments, Avant-garde with classic music traditions, which resemble as an artistic transplant experiment through his cultural hybrid experience. Lee’s been training in music from the age of 5. He began with western classical music on violin and piano and extended to Chinese classical music (Erhu, Pipa) and double bass by the time he entered University. Lee studied literature and music at San Diego State University, focusing primarily on literature theory, world music (Finnish folk music, Chinese classical, Carnatic music), and contemporary classical composition and improvisation.

演出简介《雷雨》是中国著名剧作家曹禺的处女作和成名作，创作于 1933 年，以资本家周朴园家中的故事为背景，在一天的时间中，把周鲁两家及其他的成员之间前后 30 年错综复杂的关系有条不紊地展现在观众面前。在新天地版《雷雨后传》中，曹禺笔下《雷雨》中的人物，被困在一栋老宅里，几十年如一日，重复着悲剧般的人生。每一个角色都有一个属于自己的房间，也有一段自己的内心独白，他们带领观众走进自己的世界，从自己的视角出发来重新诠释这个故事。现场每个房间都有一个电视机实时投影其他房间的角色正在做什么。和《六个寻找剧作家的剧中人》一样，每个人物都不满意自己的结局，他们还有很多未完成的心愿需要去完成 ...... 于是，他们决定找到曹禺，重新编写这个故事。浸没式戏剧作品《雷雨后传》由“表演艺术新天地”委约创作，由中国青年艺术家蔡艺芸领衔主创并担任导演。她和其他青年艺术家一起，以音乐、形体、戏剧、影像等多重手段叠加的复调形式，重新讲述了这个迷人的故事。而所有的表演，均与新天地石库门建筑改建而成的“屋里厢”博物馆融为一体，让观众完全沉浸在亦真亦幻的现实空间里，并成为表演和故事密不可分的一部分。本演出已得到曹禺先生家人关于著作权改编许可的官方授权

About the show Written in 1933, Thunderstorm is the first play as well as the masterpiece of Cao Yu, a well known Chinese playwright. The story is set in the house of a capitalist named Zhou Puyuan, where all the hidden secrets and complex relationships for over 30 years were eventually exposed in one day. In this new version, The Continuation of Thunderstorm, characters from the original play are all trapped in this old house, repeating their endless tragic life. Each character has his/her own room and internal monologues. They will lead the audience on a journey into their inner worlds and try to explain the whole story through personal views. Just like in the play Six Characters in Search of an Author, none of them is satisfied with the ending. With all their unfulfilled wishes, they decide to find Cao Yu to rewrite the story. The immersive theatre work The Continuation of Thunderstorm is commissioned by 2016 Xintiandi Festival and is directed by the young Chinese artist Cai Yiyun. Along with several young artists, Cai uses various means to retell this stunning story, including music, body language, theatre, image. The performance blends perfectly with the environment of Open House Museum, which was renovated from an old Shikumen-style building. It allows the audience to completely immerse into the time and space between illusion and reality, and then become an indivisible part of the story. The work is authorized by Mr. Cao Yu’s family member and enjoys the adaptation right .

作品介绍该剧的创作背景起源于 2007 年编剧 Gert-Jan Stam 在离开他的视觉艺术作品创作领域后，写了一出戏。在戏的开幕演出结束后，一个女人走近他，想要一份剧本。当被问及她为什么要这个剧本时，她解释说想回家和她的家人一起演。在惊讶和好奇之余，Gert-Jan 开始尝试写这样一个剧本——任何人都可以在自己舒适的家里进行表演，最重要的是不需要彩排。 2010 年爱尔兰的一个艺术家驻留项目 MAKE 给予包括 Gert-Jan 在内的 15 个艺术家机会，使其在导师的帮助和指导下 , 继续发展他们的工作。Ant Hampton 鼓励他们继续创作并完成了“自动剧场”的全文。2011 年 3 月，该剧作为 The Game is Up! 艺术节剧目上演。

About the show OK OK is a unique piece of work. Instead of professional actors, the participants are actors themselves. OK OK explores the strange potential for written text to gain its own life and claim its own space. Four audiences, unknown to each other, sit around a table, with everyone holding a script in hand. They begin to read loud their own lines and they gradually find out the script is written down just for them. It somehow pries into their inner worlds and captures the flash of emotions as performers at the moment. A minimalist comedy performed by the audience themselves. The seated participants simply read, out loud, the words hi-lighted on the scripts they hold. By 'just saying the lines' all four readers find meaning and intention falling into place. Somehow, what's said is an expression of the same doubt, curiosity and anxiety that can be expected of anyone asked to read out loud, in a group, without preparation. The text seems to anticipate the readers’ thoughts at any given moment. The result is an often very funny sense of the script acting as an uncannily 'live' object; a text, perhaps, being written at the same time as being read. This feeling gently snowballs as the piece develops and unfolds towards a surprising end.

Astonished and intrigued by this request, Gert-Jan started trying to write a play which anyone could do ‘in the comfort of their own homes’ and, crucially, without rehearsal. He was chosen for MAKE 2010, a residency programme in Ireland giving 15 artists the chance to develop their work under the help and guidance of three mentors, one of whom that year was Ant Hampton. After MAKE, Ant suggested they continue working on the piece together within the Autoteatro context. In March 2011, OK OK was performed as part of the festival 'The Game is Up!'.

In 2007 Gert-Jan Stam, in a shift away from his work in visual arts, wrote a play. At the opening, after the show, a woman approached him and asked for a copy of the script. When asked what for, she explained that she would like to go home and perform the play with her family.

About the show Miss Julie is an independent, charming and passionate lady. However, finding her arrogance and caprice unbearable, Miss Julie’s powerful fiancé broke off their engagement. It was the night of Midsummer Festival and her father was out. Miss Julie started a dancing party with the servants, tenants and other underclass in the farm. They rejoiced wildly on the ball. Miss Julie soon noticed that carter Jean is a handsome and brilliant young man, an attractive dancer despite his humble position. After spending a whole night together, they got terribly scared on the thought of staying at home any longer. The truth of humanity revealed upon the plan of elopement. Miss Julie is the classic work of J.A. Strindberg, which was premiered in 1888. Strindberg’s depiction catches subtle details and his plot uncovers the cruelty of world. Referring to many themes like Feminism, love relationship, gender identities, social classes and wealth, Miss Julie has enjoyed worldwide popularity for years. "Wulixiang" is a typical Shanghainese saying which means “home”. Located in No.25, 181, Taicang Road, Shanghai Shikumen Open House Museum is rebuilt on the model of an old house of 1920s. Shanghai Shikumen Open House Museum presents the unique Shikumen construction culture and reveals the Shanghai living space and lifestyle at that time. All the objects in display, from the old oven and children’s text book, to the lipstick and ashtray, are the actual daily appliances in 1920s Shanghai. As an immersive theatre, Miss Julie, performing in a Shanghai old house, will bring new perspectives for audience—They could travel backward and experience dreams of old time.

Director/ LIU Yang Liu Yang is a director, actor and teacher of Shanghai Theatre Academy. He studied in Drama Centre London as an academic visitor. He is a founding member of the independent theatre troupe Grass Stage and also a founding member of the international (Sweden-Chinese) theatre troupe ETheatre. His main works include 27 Wagons Full of Cotton, 38th Parallel Still Play, Woyzeck, I Am A Moon, I•SHANGHAI etc. In August 2012, the re-produced I Am A Moon participated in Edinburgh Festival Fringe. In July 2013, I•SHANGHAI performed on International Youth Arts Festival (England), becoming the Festival’s first contribution from China.

Company Introduction Action Hero is the collaboration between UK artists Gemma Paintin and James Stenhouse. For the last decade they have worked almost exclusively with each other, creating performances together that have toured to over twenty countries across 5 continents.Action Hero have performed everywhere from theatre in the heart of Rio de Janiero to an old cinema in Bangkok, and from a Satan’s Riders Motorcycle club house in Tasmania to a blues bar in Texas, and are thrilled to be returning to Shanghai after their visit in 2012.Their ongoing interests lie in the iconography of popular culture and its use; both as a weapon and as a shared cultural memory, and although their work manifests many different forms, the live experience is at the heart of everything they do.

About the show Following his last work of Dreams of Zen, The Tea Spell is another starling dance play of choreographer-Zhao Liang. It’s also the second work of his oriental trilogy of body and soul. This work premiered at Beilin, Germany in 2012. As a dance theatre work, it broke box office records in succession and arouse people’s attention. In 2015, The Tea Spell visited Korea on behalf of China, and received widespread admiration from the local audiences. The Tea Spell combines one’s understanding of tea and Zen, realistic yet illusory. Sitting in the corner of the theatre, the audience feel like returning back to a mysterious dreamland and appreciate the oriental aesthetics. The work is inspired by the exquisite tea set relic, which was unearthed from Famen Temple and used for the emperor in Tang Dynasty. It follows the clue of “Tea” , blurs the boundary of time and space and returns human nature. In the play, the three characters of a woodman, hermit and monk represent different types of people.They encounter a fair lady, constantly change and get lost in endless loop, presenting a spiritual vastness of human beings through a fresh and elegant visual tableau. The Tea Spell is created by an international creative team with world-class dance, plot, music and lighting. It integrates bold and exquisite artistic elements, rarely seen in China. This work is sponsored by China National Arts Fund in 2015. It’s also the first dance theatre workin China while using Tea and Zen as the core. It’s also the only work that present the three natural cultural heritage together onto stage.

ZHAO Liang Contemporary dancer, independent artist, a rare talent in China. Founder of Zhaoliang ART. He lived in northern Europe before and has been trying out works in different spaces, environments and theatres. He has won numerous awards in China, and he’s the first Chinese to win International Contemporary Dance Competition in Italy. He’s referred by foreign media as the soul dancer that has the oriental and mysterious disposition the most. Zhao develops unique body language and style with distinctive artistic perceptions. Zhao uses his body and actions to create works and perceive the world, and also at the same time interweave and collide with various art forms. Zhao keeps travelling for years and communicating with nature.

About the show What is the life expectancy of a plastic bag? From crude oil polyethylene to the moment it is thrown away? For how long is it actually in use? Not long at all, compared to the length of time it will then stray across the planet, blown and buffeted by the wind. Let’s hope there’s a strong wind to help it overcome any obstacles, to carry it across oceans and mountains, to encounter new possibilities and to try out different lives. Upright or upside down, free up those hands, be the object of all motion and movement. Just a sound and the air’s caress. This short French play (L’après-midi d’un Foehn-Version 1) is imbued with magic and poetic imagination. One’s imagination can be easily lightened up as long as he/she is not utterly despaired. Afternoon of A Foehn-Version 1 is the first of the trilogy- Plays of Wind, with the protagonist being plastic bags. A man, dressed in black, cuts and pastes the plastic bags with different colours into “ballet dancers” that dance in the air along with Debussy’s music and generate a mysterious spectacular. Responding to the flows of air created by the fans around the theatre, the “dancers” encounter, collide, scatter, and drift away. They’re woven into a timeless fantasy, celebrating the miracle of life, sighing upon the wandering of fate. This performance piece was originally commissioned by the Natural History Museum of Nantes for the 2008 science fair, Fête des Sciences.

Company Introduction Compagnie Non Nova was founded in 1998 by Phia Ménard with the desire to approach juggling from a different angle, through the scenic and dramaturgical structure of each piece. « Non nova, sed nove » (Not new things, but in a new way) is the company’s founding precept.

Jean-Louis Ouvrard A professional actor since 1983. He has also trained in contemporary dance, clown, mask, mime, voice techniques, gestual theatre and object theatre. He has worked with Compagnie Non Nova from November 2011 for “Afternoon of a Foehn”. He is also a choreographer and costume designer.

演出简介 “演音会”是一个新的演出概念，但却并不抽象：它似音乐会又非音乐会，似演唱会又非演唱会，似戏剧又非戏剧，它融合了以上所有的演出形式，自成格局，用写意的手法、洗练的笔意勾画出一幅不一样的京剧音乐史诗。“演音会”概念的提出者，亦即本次演出的灵魂人物、策划、制作、领衔 --- 王珮瑜。因此，这注定是一场非常“瑜老板气质”的演出，它非常符合王珮瑜给自己的标签：温和改革、积极保守。《乱弹三月》绝不媚“新”，亦不迁“旧”，它骨子里是保守的：它想要呈现的，是京剧音乐的变迁与发展，使用的所有乐器与人声，所有演奏和歌咏，都是纯正的传统中国的。但它的形式却是全新的：所有的独奏或合奏、演唱，既独立成篇，又形成对话和交流，在一个主题的贯穿中，构成一部有着完整时间轴的大型作品。主创们将传统京剧中“文武场”中的板鼓、京胡、二胡、三弦、阮、月琴、小锣、大锣、铙钹等传统乐器单独剥离呈现，再以戏曲舞台上永远的主角，无论生旦净丑，来为乐器（乐队）做意义的延伸、情感的诠释、思想的解读、色彩的丰富，以期完成一部主创们心中的京剧音乐史诗：从昆腔的形成到水磨腔的延衍，再到花雅之竞后京剧的逐渐完善，乃至于之后京剧的日臻成熟。

王珮瑜著名京剧演员，余派坤生，上海京剧院国家一级演员，建国后国家培养的第一位女老生，有“当代孟小冬”的美誉。师从王思及、朱秉谦、谭元寿、李锡祥、张学津等名师。毕业于中国戏曲学院第三届京剧演员研究生班。曾获包括全国青年京剧演员电视大赛“最佳表演奖”、中国戏剧梅花奖、白玉兰戏剧主角奖等重大奖项，是京剧新生代的领军人物，梨园人称“瑜老板”。上海市政协委员，2015 年中华十大文化人物。

About the show “Modern Opera Concert” is a brand new concept, however, not abstract. While similar to but different from concerts and plays, it integrates concert with play and develops into its own pattern. It lays out a distinctive musical epic of Peking Opera, a free and succinct style. The concept of “Modern Opera Concert” is proposed by Wang Peiyu— the soul, designer, producer and the leading cast of the show. Therefore, it’s bound to be a performance permeated with unique temperaments of Master Yu. It is consistent with the label given by Wang Peiyu herself: a mild reform, while positive conservatism. Chinese Opera Strum·March doesn’t make endless concessions to being new or old-fashioned. It’s essentially traditional. It intends to present the transition and development of Peking Opera. All the instruments and vocals used, playing and singing are authentic and traditional Chinese art. However, the form of playing is brand new. On one hand, all the instrumental solos, ensembles and singing are independent. On the other hand, they’re assimilated into a consistent theme through exchange and communication and constitute a magnificent work with a complete timeline. The traditional instruments in an opera band, like Pan-ku, Jinghu, Erhu, Sanxian, Ruan, Yueqin, small Gong, big Gong, cymbal etc., are presented individually by artists. The four main types of roles in Peking Opera help the musicians with extending the meanings, interpreting emotions and minds and enriching its colours so as to accomplish a musical epic of Peking Opera from the perspectives of the cast. Peking Opera is developing gradually from Kun Opera. After the competitions of Hua and Ya, Peking Opera keeps on improving and reaches its maturity afterwards.

WANG Peiyu A famous Peking Opera actress of YU School. She’s a first-class national actress from Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre Company. She’s the first actress that play the male roles in Peking Opera since the establishment of PRC and regarded as MENG Xiaodong in contemporary China. Wang studied from the great masters such as WANG Siji, ZHU Bingqian, TAN Yuanshou, LI Xixiang, ZHANG Xuejin and graduated from National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts with a master degree. Wang has won numerous awards, such as Best Performance Award of National TV Competition of Youth Peking Opera Performers; Plum Performance Award; Shanghai Magnolia Stage Performance Award etc. She’s addressed as “Master YU”, the leader of a new generation in the field of Peking Opera. She’s also a member of Shanghai CPPCC and one of the ten Cultural Figures of China in 2015.

Naike Ponce The Flamenco singer Naike Ponce from this production has also received numerous prizes. She was awarded a grant to study at the Cristina Heeren’s Flamenco Academy in Seville, where she took classes with masters such as José de la Tomasa, Manuel Soler, and Paco Taranto. From 2005 to 2007, she performed in the United Kingdom in the show ‘Jaleo’. Naike was nominated in the category of best breakthrough actress by the Premios de Teatro to her work in the musical ‘Complices’. She also has been a guest artist for the Spanish National Ballet. Rosalie Cocchiaro Producer and dancer Rosalie Cocchiaro began her dance training at age 3 studying ballet on a scholarship for 12 years. She began her flamenco dance training with Diana Reyes in 1998 and performed with her company before moving to Spain. She returned to Australia in 2013 after living and performing in Madrid for 10 years. There she studied at the famous Amor de Dios Academy under some of the worlds best Flamenco teachers and performed in many of Madrid's well known Tablaos, Las Carboneras, Al Andalus, Cafe de Chinitas, Torres Bermejas and was a resident dancer at 'El Juglar'. Rosalie is an Ausdance qualified teacher and has taught extensively throughout Australia giving workshops and private classes for many of Australia's flamenco schools, more recently working with Cirque de Soleil for their 2015 national tour. Her show 'Flamenqueando' won the Adelaide Fringe Dance Award in 2014.

导演 / 周燕燕演员、导演、表演教师，中瑞合作剧团“易剧场”初创成员，国际戏剧大师铃木忠志利贺国际剧团主创演员。主要参与创作和表演的作品有《郑和的后代》《一个二月的夜晚》《课堂惊魂》《I·Shanghai》《辛德蕊拉》《建筑师和亚述皇帝》《李尔王》等。导演作品有《每年一次拥有你》，并在谷亦安导演的话剧作品《牛虻》中担任执行导演，该剧于 2009 年在国家大剧院演出。

编剧 / 刘芯伶新锐编剧，现从事戏剧、影视创作及策划工作。毕业于南京大学文学院戏剧影视艺术系，获艺术硕士学位。2012 至 2015 年间，作为南京大学艺术硕士剧团的执行制作人之一。2015 年创作话剧《夜幕咖啡馆》，并获优秀毕业作品奖。《新娘》为《夜幕咖啡馆》中的一则，该剧一波三折的情节，细致入微的描写手法和俏皮灵巧的文字风格，使其从诸多毕业作品中脱颖而出，受到广泛关注和好评。

About the show A mobile space: In the corners of a Cafe, innumerable stories are happening. About fame, gossips, colleagues, farewell, jealousy, missing……A fragment of one’s life might be a battle moment of another. Emotion displaced, stuck in plight, how to solve these troubles of life? Is there a certain answer ahead? Order yourself a drink, find a seat nearby, then just listen… The story might be happening right next to your table. Listen is a series of plays in which the audience will seat around the performing area, and experience the well-designed story which is happening/ performing aside in a cafe. Taste the theatricality in real life and vice versa. This kind of new way of performing was only performed in universities or within small capacities of audience as an experimental work. However, this will become the very first time to appear on a big arts festival. Listen· The Bride tells a very entertaining story. What could happen among a workplace freshman, an ambitious senior worker and a whitecollar elite? How should a lady who is about to get married fight against competitors from work? The rising Chinese playwright Liu Xinling uses her unique writing style to make the story so lively and sarcastic. It not only brings you the joy of listening, but also pries into a different world of white-collars.

Director/ ZHOU Yanyan Zhou Yanyan, an actress, director and acting teacher. She’s one of the original founders of ETheatre (cooperated with Sweden) and the leading actress of Suzuki Company of Toga. She participated in creation of Posterity of Zheng He, The Night of February, The Lesson, I·Shanghai, Cinderella, The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria, King Lear etc. She directed Once a Year with You and worked as the executive director of The Gadfly, a theatre play of GU Yi’an, which performed at National Centre for the Performing Arts in 2009.

Playwright/ LIU Xinling Liu Xinling is a talented young playwright and now engaged in work related with play, films and television. She was graduated from School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing University with the degree of MFA in 2015. She worked as the executive producer in Nanjing University MFA Company from 2012 to 2015. In 2015, Liu created Night Café, which was awarded as the Outstanding Graduation Work that year. “The Bride” is a short story extracted from Night Café. The plot is full of twists and turns. The subtle writing technique and ingenious writing style make the work stand out and win widespread attention and acclaim.

About the show The Garden is set in a dystopian future. A scientist spends all day working in a scientific institution which is tasked with solving the world’s environmental problems, whilst his wife sits in their high-rise flat stifling in the heat and wishing that they were somewhere, anywhere else. At the very edge of breakdown, they discover hope in the form of a strange tree growing through the floor of their kitchen. They refuse to embrace the miracle until exhaust all their energy. Based on an original short play of the same name by Zinnie Harris, commissioned by the Traverse Theatre in 2009 and winning a Scotsman Fringe First Award, this new operatic version was commissioned by sound festival and premiered in Aberdeen in 2012. In 2015, The Garden was selected for the prestigious Made in Scotland showcase and was part of the Traverse Theatre’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme.

About the show Tom Ward was born in Tasmania, Australia in 1983. In 1997 he began his classical music studies at the St. Cecilia School of Music, with violinist & guitar teacher Matthews Tyson, and then he received two music diplomas. From 2001 Tom started to win numerous awards on music competitions and released his first CD 'Tasmanian Sunrise’. Tom’s commitment to guitar extends to music as a whole. He believes that it’s necessary to explore guitar performance further through the study and interpretation of great composers, conductors & soloists. He considers guitar as the most versatile & expressive solo instrument. Tom Ward is one of those rare guitarist virtuosos, who can bring audiences into the classical world. Tom has a unique style when he is playing whether it is from the baroque or the twentieth century. In 2001 on full scholarship Tom started his Bmus(hons) under the mentorship of Timothy Kain at the Australian National University. He received his first class honours degree in 2005. During this period Tom also had the opportunity to study with artists Geoffrey Lancaster, Pavel Steidl & Carlo Barone. Tom’s works are regularly broadcasted on the ABC. He has performed in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UK, and at Maestro Carlo Barone's request performed at 19th Century program of the International Condrongianos Festival in Italy (2004). Recently Tom has performed at the Darwin International Guitar Festival and represented Australia with a series of 11 highly acclaimed concerts at the Japanese World Expo.

演出简介《终极导览》是一部在户外空间里发生的特定场域演出，演出过程中比尔以导游的身份自居，以导览的形式向观众介绍某个城市或区域范围内各种各样的导览线路，可谓“导览路线的导览”。如此不寻常的“导览”旨在审视目前各地大力发展的旅游产业，揭示不同群体对城市空间的观感与互动方式，不仅是一个能让游客深入了解一个城市或城市中某具体区域的窗口，也能让当地人重新认识自己的家园，由此提出全球化和公共空间等深刻议题。这个作品能够为当地居民提供一个从外人的视角看待自己日常生活空间的宝贵机会。作为一个英国人，比尔·艾奇森（Bill Aitchison）将他在这个城市和新天地区域经历的挑战、乐事、感悟以艺术的形式呈现。“导游式” 的作品，带你重新认识新天地，多层次地呈现了一个外国人眼中充满活力的当代上海。而跟随着他的讲解与“导游”，作为“游客”的观众，将会发现一个全新的“新天地”，听到许多他们所未知的奇妙故事。比尔曾多次获得英国国家艺术委员会和英国文化协会的大力支持，并且多次受邀于英国、比利时、德国和中国的艺术机构创作作品。

比尔·艾奇森比尔·艾奇森是一位编剧和行为艺术家，他的艺术作品足迹遍及欧洲、亚洲、美国、澳大利亚及中东各国艺术节、画廊和剧场。他在伦敦大学金史密斯学院攻读了实践性博士学位。他的艺术评论文章曾多次发表于专业期刊，同时也从事表演和剧本写作方面的教学工作，并在不同国家的许多座谈和会议上呈现过自己的作品。此外，比尔是伦敦大学伯贝克学院的客座研究员。目前定居于厦门。他从事的艺术创作门类包含表演、写作、影像及音像，也具备丰富的与剧场、声效和视觉艺术领域的艺术家联合创作的经验。他的艺术实践重心为现场表演，在表演中试图丰富观众对每一个不可复制的存在当下的体验。他的作品结构严谨，也充满活力。每部作品都独具个性，但总体来说都是开放式的，肢体动作精准且不乏英式冷幽默。

About the show Tour of All Tours is a performance which is about to happen in some site- specific outdoor spaces. In this performance, Bill will become the “tour guide” to lead the audience re-tour the city/area with a completely different experience. This work aims to observe the prosperous industry of tourism, as well as to reveal the ways that different populations perceive and communicate with urban spaces. Tour of All Tours not just opens a door for tourists to have a better understanding of the city/area. Moreover, it leads the locals to re-understand their hometown and therefore bring up a topic about public sharing space, and globalism as well. Tour of All Tours will offer a great opportunity for locals to open up a new vision of the spaces where they are living in. As a British artist, Bill will present his joy, challenging, and inspirations from Shanghai and Xintiandi area in an artistic way. This tour will demonstrate modern Shanghai — a multilayer metropolitan, full of dynamic atmosphere. The audience, as the “tourists”, will follow Bill’s guiding, listen to the mysterious stories and explore “a whole new world”. Bill’s works are highly commended and supported by the Arts Council England and British Council. Also he has been invited to produce and perform by art institutes from the UK, Belgium, Germany and China for many times.

Bill Aitchison Bill Aitchison is an artist and writer who has presented his works in galleries, theatres and festivals in Europe, Asia, America, Australia and The Middle East. He holds a practice-based PhD from Goldsmiths College, University of London. He has published critical articles and reviews, taught at University level, and presented his work at numerous talks and conferences. He is associate research fellow at Birkbeck College, University of London and now lives in Xiamen. Bill Aitchison works in and between performance, writing, video and audio. And he has rich experience of collaborating with other artists from theatre, audio or visual field. At the centre of the work is a sense of performance which thrives upon the danger of the moment and sense of being part of something unrepeatable. His performances are both rigorously structured and dynamic in their execution. Each are significantly different, though as a whole have a consistent style being open-ended, formally precise and using dry humour.

London West End Chinese Premiere of “2016 Laurence Olivier Awards Ceremony” and Exhibitions

2016 年 6 月 6 日—19 日这两周当中，上海最重要的城市客厅“上海新天地”片区，将迎来首届“表演艺术新天地”艺术节活动。来自英国、法国、澳大利亚、捷克、中国、中国台湾等国家和地区的 17 个精彩剧目，将于新天地次第上演，这 17 部作品剧目形式新颖多样，绝大部分剧目均为中国首演或是原创首演，为中国观众见所未见。其极具突破性的表演空间、零距离的观看体验，全球顶尖艺术家、前沿作品与观众的亲密互动，将引领中国当代表演艺术领域的新潮流，是中国表演艺术节展领域的一次重大突破，成为中国艺术节领域内容创新、体验创新、机制创新的重要代表性艺术节展。

上海市黄浦区“环人民广场”地区，曾是中国的戏码头，演艺文化深厚，市场活力充沛。“十二五”期间，在市委市政府的关心下在市委宣传部和市文广局的支持和指导下，在社会各界的推动下，环人民广场演艺活力区在增加剧场资源、丰富演出内容、创新运营管理、提升观众体验等方面取得了长足进展。“十三五”期间，环人民广场演艺活力区将全力打造传统艺术的传承创新地、国际戏剧的展示交流地、原创剧目的孵化展演地、演艺跨界融合的示范引领地，努力营造“演艺在黄浦”的良好氛围，努力成为上海建设亚洲演艺之都的主力军和国际文化大都市的核心引领区。

艺术节由中共黄浦区委宣传部、黄浦区文化局联合发起并作为指导单位，由新天地、北京柒零柒恩剧团联合主办，由中国最具国际视野的“前沿剧展”策展团队整体策展。为了更好地宣传、推广本次“表演艺术新天地”活动，同时也向国际、国内的行业专家展示本次活动的精髓，听取他们的意见和建议，为明年以及后续艺术节活动打下更坚实的基础，中共黄浦区委宣传部和主办方一起，共同在艺术节期间联合主办“创新形态的表演艺术节展”国际对谈。

伦敦西区（London's West End）是与纽约百老汇 (Broadway) 齐名的世界两大戏剧中心之一，是表演艺术的国际舞台，也是英国戏剧界的代名词。劳伦斯·奥利弗奖（Laurence Olivier Awards），是英国最重要的戏剧及音乐剧奖项。由伦敦戏剧协会（Society of London Theatre）每年颁发，以劳伦斯·奥立佛爵士的名字命名，旨在表彰在伦敦演出的优秀戏剧。这一奖项也是中国戏剧领域最为关注的世界级奖项，此前每年的颁奖礼都备受瞩目，但中国观众一直无缘得见，这次将是该颁奖礼（配中文字幕）首次在中国进行系列官方放映，上海黄浦区将成为首映点。

对谈于 6 月 11 日－ 14 日期间举行，为期 4 天，受邀代表均来自英国、德国、法国、日本和中国的各艺术节、艺术中心、剧展、文化管理部门，同时也包括京、沪重要媒体记者和其他行业精英，共计 30 余人。对谈期间，代表们将有机会看到“表演艺术新天地” 的 14 部作品，并在节目观赏期间，围绕多个案例和主题进行交流和研讨，详细探讨如何在新的时代环境之下，依据各地的不同条件和艺术资源，举办具有特色的创新形态表演艺术节展，丰富人民的文化艺术生活，增强青少年观众对于艺术的热情与兴趣，拉近高雅艺术与普通民众之间的距离。同时，还将组织代表和媒体参观黄浦区主要剧场，听取汇报，为十三五期间建设“环人民广场演艺活力区”献计献策。 Within two weeks from 6th to 19th June, 2016, the first Xintiandi Festival will take place in Shanghai Xintiandi area, notable as the parlor of Shanghai. Seventeen brilliant works will be performed by artists worldwide, including the UK, France, Australia, Czech, mainland China, Taiwan and so on. Featured by diversity and novelty, most of the works and original plays will premiere in China, rarely seen before. This festival is distinctive in ground breaking performing spaces, viewing experience within close range, intimate interaction among top artists, fringe works and audiences. It will lead a new trend of contemporary performing arts and open up a brand new vision for performing arts festival in China. The festival is a significant representation of Chinese arts festivals in light of innovation in experience, quality and operating mechanism. With the Publicity Department of Shanghai Huangpu District Committee and Culture Bureau of Shanghai Huangpu District as the sponsor and instructor, the festival is organised together by Shanghai Xintiandi and Beijing 707 N-Theatre, and curated by “Fringe Showcase”, an award-winning institute and arts festival curating team with international vision. During the period of the festival, the Publicity Department of Shanghai Huangpu District Committee and other organizers will host an international dialogue in the name of “Innovative Performing Arts Festival” so as to popularize “Xintiandi Festival”, to present the very essence and achievements of this festival to experts and professionals at home and abroad and take their suggestions and advices, and to lay a solid foundation for the festival in the following years and its subsequent activities. The dialogue will be held for four days from 11th to 14th of June. The invited representatives come from different arts festivals, arts centres, showcases and cultural administration departments in UK, Germany, France, Japan and China. In addition, many journalists from Beijing and Shanghai and other elites will also participate in the event, altogether with over 30 people. In the course of the dialogue, the participants will watch 14 shows from Xintiandi Festival and communicate and exchange regarding several case studies and themes. Detailed discussions centre around how to organize distinctive and innovative arts festival based on local conditions and artistic resources in order to enrich people’s cultural and artistic life, enhance young audiences’ passion and interest in arts, and bring fine arts closer to common people. During the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan, with concern from Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Municipal Government, support and guidance from the Publicity Department of Shanghai Municipal Committee and Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV, and encouragement from all sectors of the society, Performing Arts Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim has made a considerable and rapid progress in increasing theatre resources, enriching performing works, innovating operating management and improving audience experience. For the next Five-Year Plan, Performing Arts Activity Zone of People’s Square Rim will dedicate with all efforts to building a place that inherit and innovate traditional arts, a platform to display international theatre works, an incubator and exhibition for original plays, a demonstration area of performing arts integration. It also endeavors to create a favorable ambience of “Performing Arts in Huangpu”, and attempts to become the leading force aiming to build Shanghai into a capital of performing arts in Asia as well as an international cultural centre. London West End is renowned for being one of the greatest theatre production destinations in the world, along with Broadway in New York. It’s an international arena for performing arts and embodies the spirit of the theatre culture in Great Britain. Laurence Olivier Awards is the most prestigious awards for theatre and musical productions in Great Britain. Named after British actor Sir Laurence Olivier, the award is presented annually by Society of London Theatre to honor excellence in theatre productions in London. This award is also one of the most recognized awards among Chinese theatre industry. The award ceremony has been attracting much attention each year, but Chinese audience were not able to watch that in China. This year, we are delighted to introduce the first screening(with Chinese subtitle) of this year’s Olivier Awards Ceremony to Xintiandi Festival in Huangpu District, Shanghai. In order to encourage exchange and conversation between “People’s Square Rim Performing Arts Cluster” and London West End, Shanghai YongHe Culture Communication Co., Ltd and WE Culture Connect Ltd. (UK) are honored to invite the representatives from Society of London theatre to Shanghai to present the “Laurence Olivier Awards 40th Anniversary exhibition”, the Chinese premiere of “2016 Laurence Olivier Awards Ceremony” and other events at Shanghai Hong Kong Plaza. Society of London will bring with them the original Laurence Olivier Statue, trophies and posters exclusively for the exhibition in Shanghai. During the period of awards ceremony and exhibition, the representatives from Society of London Theatre will attend the first Xintiandi Festival and visit major theatres in Huangpu District. This visit will establish a platform for the representatives to exchange ideas with the Publicity Department of Shanghai Huangpu District Committee and associate departments on topics such as the construction of “People’s Square Rim Performing Arts Cluster” and related theatres, the incubation of performing arts festivals, and the cultivation of new talents in the industry during the 13th Five-Year Plan. These experts will share their valuable experiences from the establishment of London West End in the last hundred years in contribution to the development of regional economy, cultural and tourist industry. This meeting is of vital importance in creating a new brand image for Huangpu District as a new centre for performing arts industry, which will contribute to the continual industry transformation of the region towards a leisure, cultural and experiential economy. Huangpu District paves its way to a sound relationship with London West End in order to establish the foundation for future collaborations in the long run.
