Please read this document immediately as it requires action from you as soon as possible, prior to the start of your block.

*** Prior to your rotation 1. Please contact Gaye directly for your REDIS password which you will need in the ED. 2. Confirm your attendance at your HPS and Junior Resident Teaching sessions prior to the beginning of the rotation (see below for details on mandatory educational events). These sessions are also intended for the R3 CCPF residents. 3. Confirm your attendance at the rotation orientation (see below for details) unless you have previously rotated through Pediatric Emergency. Orientation Session An orientation session will occur for Block __ _____________in Conference Room 1 at the Alberta Children’s Hospital (4th floor). (Meet at 0800 hrs). If you have an Emergency Shift that morning, please ask to be excused from your preceptor. It is very important that you attend this session if you have not rotated through the pediatric ED before. Some of you have a different start dates and will not be able to attend, so if after reading the attached documents you have questions please contact Gaye who will do her best to provide you with answers. Should you miss orientation for any reason, your orientation package (including the daily evaluation sheets) will be located in the doctors’ office in the Emergency Department. During your rotation Pagers are in use in the ED for communication so please carry your pager with you and let the unit clerks know of your pager number at the beginning of each shift. What to do when you show up for a shift: Introduce yourself to the doctors, nurses, and unit clerk on duty Sign in on REDIS Sign up for the next patient to be seen (or next interesting case as per your preceptor) o If the patient is a CTAS 2 or a potential child abuse victim – make sure you discuss with your preceptor prior to seeing the patient Perform a focused history and physical exam (you may document this on the chart but leave room for your preceptor to do a little writing too please!) Review the case with your preceptor Please check with preceptor first before ordering investigations Scheduling issues Questions/concerns regarding the shift schedule should be addressed to the chief fellow via email as well as to Gaye. ***Please note this is a finalized schedule on behalf of our chief fellow; you are welcome to make switches amongst yourselves but must have these approved by Russell and Gaye in order to confirm these switches for the main schedule. If you are unable to come for a shift last minute (due to illness, family emergency etc), call the ED at 955-7070 to notify your assigned attending physician.
Mandatory educational events Please note that following events are mandatory for successful completion of your rotation. The only exceptions are if you have a scheduled shift the night prior or are on previously approved vacation/conference/sick leave. For the specific schedule for your rotation, refer to the attached teaching/academic calendar. Attendance will be taken at all events and absences will be reflected on your final evaluation. 1. Human patient simulation (HPS) sessions – 2 during a 4 week rotation You will be assigned to either Junior or Senior sessions depending on your level of training (see details on HPS on the attached orientation sheet) If you are on a shift during an HPS session, you are to be excused to attend These will take place in the simulation lab located in the ED 2. Junior resident teaching sessions – Wednesday mornings 10am-noon These sessions are mandatory for all junior residents (R1 and R2) as well as R3 CCFP EM residents Sessions are based on cases and presentations deemed to be important to round out your learning objectives for this rotation If you are on a shift during a session, let your preceptor know and you will be excused to attend unless of course you are dealing with an interesting case in the ED Teaching is located in Room C4-505. The room is located on the 4th floor of ACH in the administration office wing. When you come off the elevator turn right and then right again down a long hallway. The room is the last door on the left-hand side of the hallway. 3. Thursday PEM rounds – Thursday mornings PEM rounds occur every Thursday 10:30-11:30am and are located typically in Conference Room 3 (4th floor) Occasionally (once per month) there is an additional EM city wide rounds at the ACH which occurs 9-10am in the 4th floor Ampitheatre *Please refer to the rotation specific academic rounds/teaching schedule as the schedule varies per week (Note that on the attached teaching/academic rounds calendar, there is also Fellow teaching, but this is only attended for PEM fellows and R4/5 emerg residents) 4. Procedural skills orientation – this applies to PGY1 General Pediatric Residents ONLY First time General Pediatric residents to Pediatric Emergency please ensure that you have arranged your procedural skills orientation with the Nurse Educator – Christie Tieh. If you have any questions about this orientation, please contact your Program Director. Evaluations/patient log At the end of each shift you will be required to have your preceptor fill out a shift evaluation form for you (see sample evaluation). Please also provide timely feedback to your preceptor as they are always keen to improve as teachers! You will also need to track patients seen per shift (see sample patient log form).
At the end of your rotation, submit your booklet of all shift evaluations and patient log forms in the mailbox of Dr. Pat Mihalicz (located in the ED doctors’ office). ~ Enjoy your experience in the pediatric ED!
