Le Corbusier’s “Plan Voisin” for the 1st Arrondissement in Paris, involved levelling nearly two square miles of historic buildings, and reconfiguring the organic street grid in order to design the modern city. He planned to replace the dense urban fabric with 18 high-rise apartment complexes which would provide enormous residential density, while continuing to offer residences with light, air and open space.

Each block an Island in which architectural folklore could be experimented Movement in the Metropolis becomes ideological navigation between the conflicting claims and promises of "islands" of a metaphoric archipelago.

resulting form facilitates natural daylight and views
sampling from both european and american typologies of density housing, the design explores a new hybrid standard that combines a traditional courtyard building with manhattan's highrise form. after compactness and efficiency is achieved through a perimeter block organization, the north-east corner is pulled up vertically to a height of 142 m. by keeping the other three corners low to street level, the courtyard is opened towards the hudson river, providing views and sunlight into every unit.

Project: Urban Block Location: Inchicore, Dublin Designed by John Pardey Architects Website: www.johnpardeyarchitect s.com John Pardey Architects design begins with a concept of a ‘platform’ – a stone-clad base that covers the site containing commercial accommodation, and this stone element rises up to the street frontage to make a civic face.

Neimark, Anna , United States Bottoms Up Description :Governments are growing to unprecedented sizes. Irrational exuberance has moved from the market to infrastructure. How does architecture take advantage of these developments? It transforms infrastructure into monument. Garbage collection, plumbing, sewage, grey water usage can all be streamlined and integrated into one super-dense block. “Bottoms-up” offers the city one long sought-after goal: to crowd the sky. It keeps the ground, the most valuable urban resource, open to the public and its ecological desires. It also challenges one of the many elitist tendencies in private real estate, that living higher is for higher classes. Here, mass-housing and dense commercial space forms a new collectivity at the top of the urban skyline. Block by block, sprawling cities can densify with these nodes of interlocking program. If the piloti offered a new datum for suburban dwelling, “bottoms-up” urbanizes this desire for an age of post-capitalist development.
