2018 ANNUAL REPORT
STATEMENT OF MISSION: ACHIEVA supports and empowers individuals with disabilities and their families. STATEMENT OF VISION: ACHIEVA envisions a community where disability is a distinction that makes no difference. ACHIEVA was founded in 1951 by a group of family members who all desired the same thing: to ensure their children with disabilities had the same chances in life that all children should be given. Their commitment helped to establish a nationwide movement that changed the long history of isolation and segregation for both children and adults with disabilities.
Dear Friends of ACHIEVA, As we reflect on the 2017/18 fiscal year, we realize our organization continues to grow and evolve. Marked by transition and advancement, 2017/18 witnessed the retirement of longtime President and CEO Marsha Blanco who served ACHIEVA for nearly four decades. We also saw the conclusion of Michael Dever’s successful tenure as Chair on the ACHIEVA Board of Trustees. Their respective legacies provided a strong foundation on which to build ACHIEVA’s future.
Finally, a new position - Vice President of Compliance Management - was created to help ACHIEVA Support meet or exceed government rules and regulations and maintain the highest levels of quality. In addition to new initiatives, ACHIEVA celebrated legacy programs as well. The ACHIEVA Family Trust turned 20 this year, and its expansion into Erie and Philadelphia has given many new beneficiaries across Pennsylvania access to the expert social service support and professional trust management services they deserve. Our Residential Department is renewing its commitment to person-centered approaches, and our Early Intervention Department is finding new ways to reach more and more infants and toddlers experiencing developmental delays.
Program changes during the year reaffirmed ACHIEVA’s commitment to providing new and creative opportunities for people with disabilities to live, work, and enjoy life in their communities. ACHIEVA’s Home Care and A Home of My Own programs merged into a new unified department known as Home and Community Supports. Vocational Transformation, an initiative started in 2015 to move away from segregated services to competitive work and community participation, came to successful conclusion, culminating with a name change from “Vocational Supports” to “Employment Supports” to reflect the philosophical shift and the new scope of services.
We are thankful to all of ACHIEVA’s trustees, staff, families and community partners who have contributed to a year of so many achievements. With pride, we present this Annual Report.

We Celebrate First Steps “From the minute she came in, she was able to reassure us that Ava was going to be OK.” Jennifer Bend, speaking about Ava’s PT, Annie Urso
When children in the ACHIEVA Early Intervention program reach milestones it’s not just their proud parents that celebratetheir therapists are overjoyed, too. Annie Urso, a physical therapist with ACHIEVA Early Intervention, tears up when she considers all the milestones Ava has achieved.
7
Ava Bend’s diagnosis is DiGeorge Syndrome, a disorder caused by a defect in chromosome 22. Everyday movements and actions that typically are reflexes are a daily battle for Ava.
Annie has worked with Ava since January 2017. She stepped in and provided Ava’s parents, Jennifer and Ryan, with gentle reassurance that everything would be okay. “Every resource that we can make available for her is what we’re trying to do,” said Annie. Her role is to support the family to provide tips and strategies to incorporate into their everyday lives to promote growth and development. Annie lets Ava choose the toys she wants to play with and then she integrates them into her therapy in terms of what the family’s goals are for Ava.
Through effective coaching, Annie instills a sense of confidence in Jennifer and Ryan as they become a team working together towards a common goal. Annie will never forget the day Ava took her first steps. Even though she wasn’t present to witness the monumental moment, Jennifer and Ryan didn’t waste any time sharing the video with her. “It’s just amazing that the family thinks of me,” said Annie. Ava’s progress has been astounding thanks to her dedicated family and the experience of her passionately determined therapists with ACHIEVA Early Intervention.
Ava receives physical therapy, in addition to several other therapies, all provided by a team of dedicated experts at ACHIEVA Early Intervention. Ava has come so far, and continues to thrive. 8

We Celebrate Unbreakable Bonds ACHIEVA advocates have a passion for their role that can only be shaped by personal experience. Their empathy and determination are formed by years of fighting for what is fair and just for someone they love; each advocate has a family member with a disability.
“I look at Amber and I think back about 20 years of my own life, when my son was first diagnosed. There weren’t advocates out there at that point.” She reflected, “I understand how hard the system is when things get really tough.”
Take Julie Trbovich, for example. Julie is ACHIEVA’s Director of Advocacy and Family Supports. When Julie met Amber, you could say
Amber’s son Travis has been to 36 doctors and has tried 96 different medications to treat his multiple diagnoses and they’re still looking
she saw a bit of herself in the young mother.
for a combination that works. Navigating multiple systems isn’t easy for any parent, but for a single parent, it’s especially challenging. Amber tragically lost Travis’s father when Travis was still an infant.
9
Watching Amber interact with Julie makes one thing clear-advocacy services are invaluable to families. Julie is there for Amber whether she needs an encouraging text, a friendly visit or an advocate to be by her side at an educational meeting. Amber and Julie are tied by a bond based on empathy and reinforced by the extraordinary services ACHIEVA Advocacy provides.
“AFTER

we’re still looking for a combination that works.”
Our Advocacy and Family Supports provide a wide range of services and assistance including: • Help receiving appropriate school accommodations (IEP-Individualized Education Program Meetings) • Assistance when rights have been violated because of a disability • Direction for where to turn to receive services • Support for families getting the “run-around” between different agencies

We Celebrate Belonging Remembering Cecil and David Rosenthalvalued members of the ACHIEVA family.
Family and friends referred to Cecil and David as ‘the boys’ because of their innocent, kind-hearted nature.
How many of us can say that we belong? To belong is to be fully known and loved. When we belong, we are accepted for who we are. Cecil and Dave belonged. They belonged in their home, their workplace and the community as a whole. They belonged to their family and their friends and the staff who loved them dearly.
15 11
On October 27, 2018, when rumors of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue surfaced, everyone who knew Cecil and David Rosenthal collectively held their breath, knowing - they belonged. As we mourn the loss of two beautiful souls, we also honor and celebrate the legacy they left behind. Choose kindness. Give compliments and guidance freely. Celebrate the simple and the grand moments. Love like the ‘boys’.
NEW FUND AND COMMUNITY AWARD ESTABLISHED IN HONOR OF CECIL AND DAVID Out of the horrible tragedy at the Tree of Life Synagogue, people from around the world decided to do something positive to offer their love and support, and, in addition to countless notes of condolences and sympathy cards, ACHIEVA received nearly $50,000 from over 450 donors in memory of Cecil and David within a month of the tragedy. With the example set by David and Cecil and contributions being made in their name,
ACHIEVA created a new award to be given out at its annual Awards of Excellence ceremony. “The Cecil and David Rosenthal Community Award” will be given to a person with an intellectual or developmental disability who – by virtue of how they live their life – has embraced their community, and in return their community has embraced them. In addition, the ACHIEVA Board of Trustees has created a new fund in which all existing and future donations received in memory of Cecil and David will be placed. The “Cecil and David Rosenthal Memorial Fund” will
be used to support community engagement activities pursued by people with intellectual or developmental disabilities and to honor future recipients of the Cecil and David Rosenthal Community Award with a $1,000 gift.
For future updates, please visit ACHIEVA’s website at www.achieva.info/rosenthal

We Celebrate Money Management When living independently, one of the most important needs is to be financially responsible. Using curriculum from the Pennsylvania Assistive Technology Foundation (PATF), ACHIEVA launched Money Club West to teach participants of A Home of My Own how to manage their finances. A Home of My Own is part of the recently merged Home and Community Supports department at ACHIEVA. Participants of the program all share a desire to live independently while receiving assistance from ACHIEVA Supports Brokers and Life
13
Coaches to select housing, transportation and employment, and to help meet individualized goals and learn new skills. Money Club West, a 10-month financial program, further educates people by teaching financial terms, recommending informed financial decision making, and advising on how to manage money safely and wisely as one moves forward towards independent living. The nine participants of the program learned how to keep their personal information safe and avoid identity theft.
At each monthly meeting, program participants deposited money into their Individual Development Accounts (IDA). All deposits were ultimately matched by PATF with the understanding that each person’s savings would be used to purchase the Assistive Technology (AT) of their choice. Members saved for items including tablets, laptops, and helpful apps and software. They talked about what they learned throughout the process; a group that began as strangers became sudden friends. Program Coordinator, Kaylynn Petri
shared, “When we started, none of the nine individuals and their mentors knew each other. On the first day of class, everyone was very shy and quiet. I started that first class as a sort of ‘getting to know you,’ community meeting. Within three or four classes I started hearing ‘Hey, it was fun hanging out!’ They were exchanging phone numbers.” The classmates formed bonds that can last a lifetime, increased their independence and control, and built a foundation for strong financial decision making.

Savings were used to purchase Assistive Technology Tablets, laptops and mobile phones were common choices. However, some members of the club got creative with their purchases. A cordless vacuum has proven beneficial to Kevin who uses a cane for stability. The cordless vacuum is very lightweight and there are no cords for him to trip over, allowing him to independently and safely vacuum.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ACHIEVA FAMILY TRUST! How about a little history? The Family Trust’s Articles of Incorporation as a Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation were filed with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on January 20, 1998. Its 501(c)(3) determination letter from the federal Internal Revenue Service was issued April 15, 1998. And the first trust was opened July 1, 1998 for beneficiary No.1 with a deposit of $24,927.11 (beneficiary #1 still has a trust with ACHIEVA Family Trust today!).
15
Since 1998, ACHIEVA Family Trust has seen a lot of growth, expanding from just one to 2,226 beneficiaries. Assets under management have surged from the initial $25,000 to $120 million. And its staff has grown from two to nineteen, with its geographic presence moving into two other corners of the state. Regional offices are now staffed in both Erie and Philadelphia.
ACHIEVA Family Trust, through its Future Planning Project has become a one stop resource for families trying to plan for the future of their loved one with a disability. No-cost consultations are provided to families advising them about the potential use of Third Party Special Needs Trusts to preserve a future legacy for their family member. What makes ACHIEVA Family Trust unique is not only its willingness to work with families of relatively modest means (i.e., a trust can be created with smaller amounts of money than most commercial banks require), or its individualized “case management” that helps the beneficiary navigate other resources available and, in turn, maximize the trust’s impact, but also the fact that it offers something called a “Charitable Residual Account.” When beneficiaries of the Pooled Trust pass away and funds remain, many nonprofit pooled trusts will simply put those funds into operations. ACHIEVA Family Trust does not do that. Rather, its Charitable Residual Account is used to assist people with disabilities and their families in other ways, paying for such things as iPads, vehicle modifications,
adaptive bikes and strollers, or attending camps. ACHIEVA Family Trust has distributed more that $5 million dollars over the years for these types of products and services – products and services that advance the independence, self-determination, recreation, and overall community belonging for people with disabilities in need.
The Family Trust looks forward to protecting futures
