Our Mission ACHIEVA supports and empowers individuals with disabilities and their families. Our Vision ACHIEVA envisions a community where disability is a distinction that makes no difference.
2
ACHIEVA was founded in 1951 by a group of family members who all desired the same thing: to ensure their children with disabilities had the same chances in life that all children should be given.
Their commitment helped to establish a nationwide movement that changed the long history of isolation and segregation for both children and adults with disabilities.
DEAR FRIENDS Dear Friends,
Looking back on Fiscal Year 2015 – 2016, so many moments serve as vivid reminders of the innovative practices and commitments by ACHIEVA. As a mission-driven agency, ACHIEVA provides lifelong supports and empowers individuals with disabilities and their families. We have never strayed from our grassroots of providing access to information, support and advocacy. I am proud to present to you this copy of our 2016 Annual Report. This report highlights the Fiscal Year and our accomplishments. For more than 65 years, ACHIEVA has a long history of not just maintaining but adapting its services to the needs of each individual and to the community. Being a part of a community and feeling included is important in all people’s lives. Becoming a part of a community takes time and effort and ACHIEVA is committed to providing innovative and industry-changing programs and services for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Marsha Blanco President and Chief Executive Officer
We continue to give children and adults and their families options and opportunities to celebrate their abilities with early intervention services; vocational skills for inclusion and employment; choosing where and with whom they want to live; recreation activities and outings and respite time for family members with home care supports; and, helping individuals and families with disabilities plan for their future with special needs trusts. ACHIEVA thanks the donors, trustees, volunteers, families and staff who ensure the individuals we serve are able to live the best life possible. You have helped to provide support when families don’t qualify for other assistance. ACHIEVA will continue to innovate and emphasize one community for all. We are proud of what we have accomplished this year. We look forward to another exciting year ahead.

ACHIEVA and CCAC Partner in Community Garden Project
ACHIEVA and the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) have partnered to help support students and families in need of food assistance. Through this partnership, 19 ACHIEVA customers serve as volunteers for CCAC’s South Campus. Two days each week they help maintain the gardens and greenhouse by weeding, watering and picking vegetables. Much of the produce then goes to the Campus Cupboard South Food Pantry. More than 80 families have received food assistance since the pantry opened this year. Spring 2016, over 14 dozen ears of sweet corn were picked from the community garden by ACHIEVA volunteers and distributed, monthly to families. 88
This partnership has yielded a bountiful harvest of vegetables and herbs from the CCAC South Campus community garden. However, the benefits go far beyond the homegrown corn, zucchini, beans and tomatoes. The partnership provides a rewarding, communitybased experience for the volunteers. They learn valuable skills while participating in a worthwhile and enjoyable activity. CCAC’s Community Training and Development department has worked with ACHIEVA for more than 30 years to help the agency’s customers reach their full potential. Expanding the relationship to include the South Campus community garden has proven to be a great opportunity for both partners. “We have been very fortunate to host individuals from ACHIEVA who helped with the flower beds and the community garden. The vegetable garden, in particular, has yielded vegetables and herbs that are unparalleled in their freshness, size and beauty, and the greenhouse is active and prolific, once again,” said CCAC South Campus President Charlene Newkirk. Partners like CCAC make it possible for individuals with disabilities to gain meaningful community experiences.
Giant Eagle Receives National Honor for Their Work with ACHIEVA Supporting Inclusion for People with Disabilities For over 20 years, ACHIEVA and Giant Eagle have been partners in providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Currently, ACHIEVA supports more than 30 individuals employed within Giant Eagle retail locations. Giant Eagle’s commitment to individuals with disabilities made them more than worthy of The Arc of the United States’ prestigious Catalyst Award for making extraordinary contributions in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). In October, Giant Eagle was presented with the Regional Business Employer of the Year Award for its longstanding commitment to hiring people with I/DD and supporting them to thrive in a variety of positions throughout the company’s 423 retail locations where individuals with disabilities are not limited, but rather given the opportunity to find a job that best fits their skill set and interests. For 85 years, Giant Eagle has been dedicated to giving back to the communities it serves, and has been a stalwart champion of employment for people with disabilities. Team Members with disabilities are treated just as they should be at Giant Eagle — no differently than their colleagues without disabilities. People with disabilities thrive in a variety of positions throughout Giant Eagle’s retail locations. “As a company that is dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse work environment, we have taken great strides in expanding employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities,” said Jeremy Shapira, Giant Eagle, Special Projects in Inclusion and Diversity.
“We are honored to have this commitment recognized by The Arc of the United States and ACHIEVA, but even more so to help this community of hard-working, committed individuals succeed in the workforce.” Giant Eagle also has Disability Awareness Training for its Team Members which includes a review of the Americans with Disabilities Act, interviewing skills for hiring people with disabilities and disability simulations. The goal is not just to promote employment for people with disabilities within their company, but also to educate, empower and enable other companies to follow in their footsteps. They are advocating in communities and working with other companies to help them begin employing people with I/DD. “Honorees do not just align with The Arc’s mission, they are helping to expand it to new audiences. They are each change agents in their respective fields and their work is helping to create a future that is more inclusive for people with disabilities. We are grateful for their contributions and hope that by honoring their work, we will inspire and empower others to follow in their footsteps,” said Peter Berns, Chief Executive Officer of The Arc.

What Happened to $6.8 Million Directed to the Waiting List by the Pennsylvania Legislature? “A lesson has been learned. People with intellectual disabilities and autism, families, advocates and legislators must ensure that there is a line item in the budget that is clearly marked Waiting List Initiative. Then, there will be no confusion next year.“ — PA Parent September 2016, we learned that $6.8 million dedicated to the waiting list is being used by the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) to pay last year’s bills. While we agree that bills should be paid, it should not come from money specifically allocated to take people off the waiting list. More frightening is that this sets a precedent for the Office of Developmental Programs to use appropriated funding any way they see fit. We have also been advised that Governor Wolf can appropriate the needed funding. Families are beyond frustrated and trying to make legislators and administrators aware of how devastating this is to families. Many just can’t afford to wait another year and they shouldn’t have to wait. Without waiting list funding thousands of families across the state in emergency situations will have to wait another full year or more for critical services. Elderly caregivers, families who provide 24/7 care for people with complex medical and/or behavioral issues and single caregivers who had been waiting with little hope now have no hope. 10
We need to make sure our state leaders know the huge impact the loss of waiting list funding means to the disability community. Currently, there are over 13,450 people on Pennsylvania’s waiting list. Over 4,500 of those people are on the emergency list, meaning they need immediate funding.
Here’s what you can do to help: Call Governor Wolf at 717.787.2500 Call Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack at 717.787.3300 Call Randy Albright at the Office of the Budget 717.787.4472 Here’s what to say: • “Hello, my name is • “I live in
.” county.”
• “Please appropriate $6.8 million to address the waiting list for intellectual disability services.” • Tell them why: “This funding is critical for families in Pennsylvania. And, only the Governor has the power to fix it.”
Vocational Transformation Supports ACHIEVA’s Vision ACHIEVA is proud to be at the forefront of vocational transformation in our region. The components of this transformation are Employment and Community Experiences and alignment with our longstanding vision to support a community where disability is a distinction that makes no difference. The transformation of our vocational supports has resulted in many successes. Among these accomplishments, ACHIEVA has placed 25 individuals in rewarding, inclusive work environments since April 2015 and partnered with a number of local organizations. Giant Eagle and GetGo welcomed ACHIEVA as its exclusive partner for “The GetGo Inclusion Project.” GoGetters, like Sharay, are being hired at GetGo locations, working in customized positions designed to meet their skills and interests. Training, along with ACHIEVA’S increased level of job coaching, ensures positive outcomes for both the participant and GetGo.
Sharay exclaimed, “I like being employed because I get to make money. I need money for the stuff I want to buy. I have more space and independence to do the things I like, like getting my hair done and buying nice clothes. It just feels good for me to work.” Individuals from ACHIEVA also partnered with Global Links to sort and fold scrubs for the Save Your Scrubs initiative. The volunteer experience provides valuable life skills and job training while working alongside Global Links staff. The work they provide helps to process donations and quickly get them into the hands of those who need them. ACHIEVA is pleased to stay true to our vision, celebrating the abilities of those we serve. We are fully committed to supporting the needs of all who are involved in this transition and we look forward to witnessing the positive opportunities it provides. 11 11
Do You Remember… Do you remember how you felt when you earned your first paycheck? Were you happy? Were you proud? For Sean, that happiness, that pride, and that first paycheck were not guaranteed. Sean is a young man with developmental disabilities. After losing both of his parents, Sean wasn’t sure what his future would hold. He wondered if he would ever find work. Fortunately, Sean was able to receive vocational supports from ACHIEVA Employment Specialists who understood Sean’s personal goals and set up an individualized plan for him. They taught him everything he would need to find and keep a job. It wasn’t too long after being introduced to ACHIEVA that Sean joined the staff of ACHIEVA’s Cleaning and Janitorial services. He worked five days a week at the State Police Barracks. ACHIEVA Employment Specialists helped Sean to develop his skills and learn how to interact with the police as his co-workers and how to accomplish a variety of duties. He excelled at them all. When it came time to apply for employment outside of ACHIEVA, Sean was ready. With ACHIEVA, he had a strong work history that demonstrated his abilities. It came as no surprise to Sean’s employment specialists when McDonald’s called him back. Sean, on the other hand, could not believe the good news. When Sean describes hearing that he got the job, his eyes light up and his face gives off a huge smile. Sean said, “I was SO excited!”
12
Sean is proud of his job. He enjoys being employed at a company where he is needed, wanted and appreciated. “Especially the managers are happy that I’m there. They have a lot on their plates. When I’m there, they’re like ‘Yay’! Sean’s here. Sean’s here to save the day!’” says Sean. Despite the obstacles he has faced, Sean appreciates everything he has accomplished. Now, he lives in his own apartment surrounded by a community of friends and family who look out for him. Sean even takes pleasure in doing laundry because it is part of being independent. “I know not everyone likes doing laundry, but come on, it’s not that bad!” ACHIEVA’s mission is to continue to support and empower people just like Sean, who want to work and live in the community doing what they love.
Meet Richard Richard has been a part of the ACHIEVA family for over 22 years. Initially his supports included community outings and socialization. His supports needs changed drastically following the loss of his mother, his primary caregiver. ACHIEVA assisted Richard with his transition to independent living. It wasn’t an easy road, but thanks to the efforts of ACHIEVA’s dedicated staff, Richard is in a much better place today.
Six Months Ago Richard was admitted to the hospital for severe health complications. After experiencing respiratory failure, Richard was sent to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on a ventilator. Hospital staff knew little about his medical history or intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) status, which meant he wasn’t getting the best care and attention he needed.
That was until Michael, Richard’s support staff through ACHIEVA, stepped in, becoming actively involved in Richard’s care. Michael provided valuable information to hospital staff and helped keep Richard’s morale up with constant visits, on his own unpaid time. Richard began to recover but still was not at 100 percent. He could not remember his family members, where he lived and was unable to walk. However, there was one person he knew without fail: Michael. Michael continued his visits and stayed very active in Richard’s medical care. In fact, Michael was there when Richard was eventually moved to a nursing home. He took Richard to his new home and helped to provide medical and historical information that otherwise may not have been available. With this transition, Michael was there every step of the way. He continued his visits, coached staff on Richard’s care, filled out his meal orders and helped with his personal grooming and hygiene needs. Michael became far more than a care provider, he became Richard’s family.
Today Richard’s health, mentally and physically, is on the upswing. He’s regained some memory and has been discharged from the nursing
home. Michael helped Richard move back into his community, where Richard is living independently. But he’s not alone. If you ask Richard, he would tell you that Michael is his best friend. For six months, Michael was even more than that; he was Richard’s lifeline. Michael never gave up on Richard; Michael was willing to do whatever was necessary for Richard’s success and recovery. Now Richard is ready to get to work and reconnect with his longtime friends and co-workers. 13
Mission of Mercy Free Dental Clinic
ACHIEVA’s Disability Healthcare Initiative (DHI) took part in the region’s first ever Mission of Mercy dental event, June 2016, at the David Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Over the course of two days, 492 volunteers donated their time to provide care for 947 dental visits. Over 3,900 dental procedures were performed, free of cost, a savings of over $841,000 in dental care costs.

Assisting ACHIEVA in its efforts, were volunteers from the Consumer Health Coalition, a dental hygienist from Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and students from the Physician Assistant Program at Slippery Rock University. Each attendee was given DHI’s new brochure “Your Teeth Matter” to help connect them to future dental care and provide basic information on brushing, flossing, nutrition and why oral health is vital to overall health.
Emergency Response to Zika Virus On September 23, 2016, Nancy Murray, President, The Arc of Greater Pittsburgh at ACHIEVA, provided testimony on Capitol Hill during the Coalition for Health Funding’s hearing on “Zika: A Case Study in Emergency Response Across the Public Health Continuum.” During the hearing, Nancy spoke about the lifelong issues faced by families of children born with microcephaly due to their mothers being infected with the Zika virus. She explained these children will require early intervention, specialized healthcare, special educational services, therapies, and long term services and supports. The vast majority of these children will be eligible for Medicaid and Social Security which have been targeted for cuts by some Members of Congress in recent years. Nancy advocated that rather than being cut, Medicaid and Social Security need to be enhanced and strengthened, and Congress needs to quickly authorize funding to combat this extremely serious public health crisis before another child is born with a lifelong disability.
17,000 Current number of domestic cases of Zika virus
Nancy advocated that rather than being cut, Medicaid and Social Security need to be enhanced and strengthened, and Congress needs to quickly authorize funding to combat this extremely serious public health crisis before another child is born with a lifelong disability. Currently, there are nearly 17,000 domestic cases of Zika virus and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports nearly 1,800 pregnant women in the states and territories have been infected. To date, in the United States alone, more than a dozen babies have been born with microcephaly—a birth defect that causes the brain to stop developing and sometimes, the skull to collapse. Tragically, one of those infants has died. The Administration has declared a public health emergency in Puerto Rico, where experts predict that 25 percent of the island’s population, including pregnant women, will
become infected with the virus by the end of 2016. The CDC has issued the first-ever domestic travel advisory, warning pregnant women not to travel to areas of Florida where local transmission of Zika is occurring. ACHIEVA’s participation in the Coalition for Health Funding’s hearing on Zika is a continuous effort to bring together experts working on the front lines of the public health continuum to mitigate this public health emergency—from Zika virus surveillance, to vaccine research and development, to maternal, fetal and child health, to supporting individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. 15 15
