Lauren is Out and About and in LOVE...
ACHIEVA • Annual Report 2013
“We thank God The Arc is here.” - Ron and Dorothy September 20, 1982 was a joyful day for Ron and Dorothy. On that day they welcomed their baby girl, Lauren, into the world. As all parents, they were excited to take their new addition home. Unfortunately, that happy day was overshadowed with news Ron and Dorothy can only describe as devastating. “When the doctor told us our daughter had an intellectual disability, it was like someone reached into my gut and pulled everything out,” recalls Ron. Dorothy has similar memories. “You start to think, is she ever going to talk or understand or how will she get by in life? You are not afraid of what it will do to your life, you fear what it means for her life. It’s painful and you can not protect her from it.” As are many parents with children with disabilities, Ron and Dorothy were left on an unfamiliar path with little direction. “We asked ourselves what do we do, where do we go and we realized there really was not a place for us to go”, recalls Ron. Now let’s fast forward to today, Lauren is 31, she hangs out often with friends, loves going bowling and to the movies and she’s in LOVE. Getting to this happy place was not entirely “She always tells us she easy for Lauren and her parents, but they all say ACHIEVA (The Arc of Westmoreland) played wants to stay at The Arc. a very large part. 90% of her social life is
there.”
In 2004, there was a turning point for Lauren. After years of misinformation from doctors, abuse in the public school system and countless hours of worrying from Lauren’s parents, Lauren made her transition to The Arc of Westmoreland. Finally, Lauren had found a place that would fit her needs. “For the first time in her life she was with people she could relate to and who could relate to her. Everyone accepted each other for who they were and that was critical,” recalls Ron. “The Arc would become what we knew was going to be Lauren’s life. The Arc would become her social and economic existence.” Two days a week Lauren works at the Founders Vocational Center at The Arc of Westmoreland, That’s where the economic part of her life comes into play. As for the social experience, it has blossomed to more than even Lauren expected, “I feel safe at The Arc, I have a lot of friends and the staff is nice.” Lauren’s friend base at The Arc can be largely accredited to the group outings planned by The Arc’s Home Care department. The program is designed for people to get out in the community and do the things they normally would not get to do. It

- Ron
“She’s happy here, so it’s very important that this place exists.” - Dorothy was created to develop friendships, foster independence and build social skills. Nonetheless, Lauren has gotten something extra out of the outings. Lauren has found LOVE.
As time progressed, those group outings turned into something special for Joe and Lauren. “They walk in together, they pick what movie they want to see, they buy their tickets together,” Dorothy adds. “It’s important because they get to be together. It is a date for them. They get to be like everyone else.” And they both must be doing something right because they’ve been going strong for 10 years. So, is marriage in the future for these two? Who knows? Ron may have to help Lauren with the details. “We joke with her sometimes and ask her if she and Joe are going to get married. She says yes, I’m going to get him a ring and I tell her, I think it’s supposed to be the other way around.” Besides being funny and handsome, if you ask Lauren, she’ll tell you what she LOVES most about Joe. “I feel safer when I’m with Joe.”
Celebrating Abilities. Exceeding Expectations.
Dorothy remembers the day she first heard the name Joe. “Lauren came home and said there’s this guy that told me I look like a grandma cause my hair is highlighted. I asked her what is his name, and, she said Joe. I told her, well he’s probably just teasing you because he likes you.” And sure enough, Joe did. Joe, who works with The Arc’s Property Maintenance team, was able to win over Lauren. It only took a year before Joe and Lauren became inseparable. It started with a few phone calls and now they talk everyday.
“Even if we wanted Lauren to leave The Arc, she wouldn’t.” - Dorothy

ACHIEVA & Sibshops “Sibshops is a wonderful program for children that have a relative, not just siblings, with neuro-diversity. We wanted our children to be able to discuss their worries and gain positive insight with knowledgeable adults. It has been a happy and cathartic experience for our children.” ~ mother of two Sibshops Pittsburgh participants
ACHIEVA • Annual Report 2013
Sibshops are best described as opportunities for brothers and sisters of children with special health and developmental needs to obtain peer support and education within a highly recreational context. The Sibshops curriculum is practiced internationally. It intersperses information and discussion activities with games that are designed to be unique, off-beat and appealing to a wide ability range. Sibshops Pittsburgh activities have included cooking lessons, empathy exercises, a visit to the Giant Rubber Ducky art display, hiking in Schenley Park and a group documentary discussion. Sibshops Pittsburgh acknowledges that being the sibling of a person with disabilities can come with mixed emotions. The workshops reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one another, when they are given the chance.
Sibshops Pittsburgh is working to increase the peer support and information opportunities for brothers and sisters of people with disbilities. Visit www.sibshopspgh.org for more information or to register.

ACHIEVA’s Capital Campaign Progress Winter Update
ACHIEVA is overwhelmed by the community contributions it has received. It’s excellent to know that ACHIEVA has donors who understand the importance of providing the best possible supports and services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The corporate and foundation community has rallied around ACHIEVA’s efforts. Over 60 companies, corporations and foundations have contributed to the campaign to date.
The goals of the campaign include: $2.5 million to launch and implement the Waiting List Reduction Initiative and provide families the services they desperately need for the benefit of family members with disabilities, to reduce institutionalization and to keep positive relationships intact.
Celebrating Abilities. Exceeding Expectations.
ACHIEVA has had great success in its $8 million capital campaign, Innovation in Support of People with Disabilities. The campaign has received glowing endorsement from people throughout the region. Since the campaign launch in November of 2012, ACHIEVA has met 76 percent of its goal, raising $6.2 million.
$700,000 to expand accessibility to the ACHIEVA Family Trust, increasing long-term financial security for 1,500 more people with disabilities, offering peace of mind to more families and decreasing reliance on public welfare systems. $1.6 million to invest in equipment and add new space to expand production capacity, increase earnings and create competitive jobs for young people with disabilities at ACHIEVA’s growing Bridgeville pallet manufacturing facility. $3.2 million to repair and replace materials at ACHIEVA’s largest commercial and residential properties creating safe, comfortable and environmentally sustainable workplaces and living spaces for the many people with disabilities in this region. 13
Innovation in Support of People with Disabilities: ACHIEVA’s Commitment to the Community Through generous campaign donations and community support, two large projects of the capital campaign are underway. ACHIEVA has successfully launched its Waiting List Reduction Initiative, A Home of My Own. This innovative new program blends a family’s private resources with government funding and natural supports to enable people with disabilities to live safely and independently in their communities.
ACHIEVA • Annual Report 2013
The Home of My Own team is meeting with people with disabilities, families, supports coordinators and housing experts to locate housing and plan the supportive services that people need to lead safe, productive lives in the community of their choice. Another project of the campaign is nearly complete, ACHIEVA’s expansion of its Bridgeville facility. PJ Dick and their crews have been working for over four months adding 2,500 square feet of indoor space and over 8,000 square feet of covered outdoor space to ACHIEVA’s successful pallet manufacturing plant in Bridgeville. The new additions will give ACHIEVA added production and work space to generate additional revenue, which ACHIEVA will use to enhance current services and create new supports for people with disabilities. This expansion will also allow ACHIEVA to employ more individuals with disabilities over the next three years. Over the long term, this will further increase the organization’s self-sufficiency.
If you have not had the opportunity to support the campaign in reaching its fundrainsing goal, it’s not too late. For more information, to volunteer your time or to contribute to the campaign, please contact David Tinker, CFRE at 412-995-5000 x436 or dtinker@achieva.info. 14
A dedicated group of nearly 50 of the region’s leaders has assembled to conduct this campaign. All six committees of the campaign are on schedule for raising their share of the funds needed to complete the project. On behalf of the more than 14,500 individuals with disabilities whom ACHIEVA serves, we extend our deepest gratitude to these volunteers and to the hundreds of individuals, foundations and corporations that have provided financial support to this major effort.

Ensure Your Legacy Here are two simple ways to name ACHIEVA in your estate plans. First, you can include us in your will. To include ACHIEVA in your will, you may use the following statement in your will or codicil: “I give, devise and bequeath to ACHIEVA, a Pennsyvania not-for-profit corporation, with offices presently located at 711 Bingham Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203, the sum of $_______.” Second, you may list ACHIEVA as a beneficiary in your insurance policies. To do so, ask your employer or insurance agent for a copy of your insurance beneficiaries form. You may then list ACHIEVA as a beneficiary. You will likely need our Federal Tax ID number 25-1505216. You or your estate may receive a tax deduction when the policy is executed. If you have already included us in your estate plans, please let us know by contacting Jamie Rhoades via email: jrhoades@achieva.info or at 412-995-5000 x526, so that we may properly recognize your gift.
‘Thank You’ to ACHIEVA Dear ACHIEVA,
Getting services for Zach through ACHIEVA’s Early Intervention program was a great experience for our entire family. Although Zach was the one in preschool, we all learned so much through the entire process. I really enjoyed my talks with staff and find myself often thinking and referring back to some of those conversations about child development and parenting in general. The therapists and staff were so helpful in answering our questions and giving us advice on how to optimize success for Zachary.
Celebrating Abilities. Exceeding Expectations.
It’s hard to believe that Zach has been out of your Early Intervention program for nearly six months. I’m sure you remember how we were freaking out a bit when it was time to leave. We were under the gun in finding a preschool and having qualms about the best practices for Zach. However, thanks to ACHIEVA, we have learned so much from him - to give him time and space to acclimate to new situations and to ease him into transitions well in advance. I now have no doubts that Zach will continue to feel more comfortable at school and new situations.
Thanks again for everything,
- Tony

ACHIEVA Makes Big Strides
Through HealthMeet™
ACHIEVA • Annual Report 2013
HealthMeet™ is a project of The Arc of the United States. The goal is to raise awareness of and reduce the significant health disparities often experienced by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). As a part of this program, five chapters of The Arc from across the country offer free community-based health screenings and health promotion activities for people with I/DD as well as online and in-person trainings for healthcare professionals, individuals with I/DD and their families, caregivers, direct service providers and medical students. As one of the five chapters of HealthMeet™, ACHIEVA has experienced great success and is exceeding expectations. Screenings across the Pittsburgh region began March 2013. Since then, ACHIEVA has held eight HealthMeet™ events, including a health screening at the Special Olympics Allegheny County Summer Games. Through ACHIEVA’s efforts over 173 people have been screened. ACHIEVA has established unique partnerships to help support the program and help promote healthy living options. Eruption Athletics, a personal training program for men and women with disabilities, joined ACHIEVA’s HealthMeet™ events to offer fun fitness activities and exercise guidance to participants. Eruption Athletics is dedicated to providing athletic trainer-certified programs to develop strength, flexibility and wellness with a focus on men and women with disabilities. AdvaCare Home Services, another partner of the program, helped ACHIEVA to purchase medical equipment needed to conduct the screenings. These partnerships give ACHIEVA the opportunity to enhance HealthMeet™ events and put a fun and interactive spin on the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle for HealthMeet™ participants.
For more informaton on HealthMeet™ or to receive the HealthMeet™ newsletter, contact Melissa Allen at 412-995-5000 x569 or mallen@achieva.info. 32
