Saturday, December 10, 2011 the Nu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated as well as a group of fellow students visited the Children’s Hospital of Greenville, SC and made an early holiday delivery of gifts to the children. At precisely 11:00am Saturday morning the brothers of the Nu Zeta Chapter and seven volunteers loaded university vans with various toys and began the drive to Greenville, SC. An excess of 250 toys were donated by members of the WCU community (both student and faculty) during the two-month toy drive. Upon arrival, the group was greeted by members of the hospital staff and briefed the group on the children that they would be visiting. The children that were currently in the ward aged from 5 months to 17 years of age. The Nu Zeta Chapter and student volunteers received warm welcomes from not only the children but their family members as well. The siblings of the patients also received gifts and were invited to join in on the activities. The activities for the children included a holiday-themed arts & crafts session, Xbox 360 video games and traditional board games. At the conclusion of the three-hour, a toy-filled children’s wagon was prepared and left with the hospital staff to deliver to those that were either too ill or unstable to participate in the activities. The liaison for the hospital stated that the toy drive/play day coordinated by Alpha Phi Alpha had been the largest such event in her tenure with the hospital. The hospital staff and the families of the children thanked the event participants and wanted to also thank the members of the WCU community that took part in making the toy drive such a success. The brothers of the Nu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. would also like to extend thanks to those that participated in the delivery of the toys as well as the students, faculty and staff that made donations during the toy drive and WHEE-Wobble Marathons.
