Now, becoming an artist is no longer have the question of a beauty. Nor criticize or just a cultural observer with a position that is above society. Because art, is no longer enough to do a critique of political behavior, cultural life of the community, the collapse of social morality. Society has now face to face with a television drama that is always present difficulties of life to silence their lives. Performative actions are no longer enough to surprise the public, because now in action initiatives have now become public property. We see how performative people commit suicide by crashing into electric trains.

Installation art is now as good as buildings belonging to semi-permanent living homeless and living under the bridge. Art is now supposed to be part of the society, without any attempt to distinguish itself as a form of the idea of ‘valuable’ difficult to understand. The idea presented in the exhibition are now no longer borrow some abstract form of a la Plato’s idea but takes the form existing in the society

Cut and Rescue works across mediums, from a collage of images and text, sound and video pieces, as well as experimental and performative action. The name of the group that can be simply defined as a cut and save, Cut and Rescue retrieve, copy, and save cultural artifacts intertwined around the community, which had been considered banal and low, such as newspapers headlines. In the context of art, Cut and Rescue has participated in several art activities such as: Jakarta 32∞C 2012 (5 Best Work), Jakarta Biennale 2013, and appeared in several music festivals. There is a continuity that is always present in our mass culture production, which the entertainment industry, pop culture and national mass media continues to produce ‘sadness’ as a commodity which is presented to an urban society. Sadness, also misery, present in various forms as the main condiment popular culture products to be ‘fine dining’ favorite city residents. Seasoning “sadness” can be found in the melancholy drama movies, romance novels a la Mira W to hack writer, pop songs breakup until dangdut song lamenting the fate. Television programs ranging from crime news, reality shows, soap opera melodrama that never ended, celebrity gossip, until the call of religion all contribute to show sadness. 2017 | RESI(PRO)VOKASI, Participatory Art Practice in Indonesia Post-Reformation, National Gallery Indonesia - Jakarta

Recipro(vo)cation can be interpreted as “reciprocation and provocation” or “reciprocal provocation”, a two-way method of communication and egalitarian exchange of ideas between artists and the public, which is directly related to the creative process of artworks/art events – consciously or unconsciously – as if each is provoking the other. The emergence of artists’ awareness of these efforts towards public involvement or their own involvement in the public during their creative process begins with a rejection of the elitism of art, the cult of the artist, and the alienation that is created between art objects and visitors to galleries and museums. Creative experimentation in direct public participation is among the speculative efforts to bridge this distance, although the results can in fact engender a new kind of alienation. This exhibition aims to represent the tendency to participatory art practice from the post-Reformation era through to today as an “alternative” creative practice to the dominance of studio-based individual practice. The spectrum of participatory art practice addressed is in closely aligned in its approach to terms in Western art discourse, such as relational art, art and social practice, interactive art, activist art, community based art and so on. This exhibition is an effort to enrich readings of contemporary art practice in Indonesia. Through the concepts offered by these artists in diverse social contexts, the exhibition intends to provide a general picture of how artists respond to the conditions around them; to ignite critical thinking about contemporary social problems and to provide a different perspective in interpreting creative art practice based on processes and events, as an alternative artistic experience for the artists and an alternative aesthetic experience for the public. *** Bayu Genia Krishbie Curator We displaying Cut And Rescue selected archive artwork from 2012-2016. We also experiment with the audience’s gesture of how to see the object and archive closer.
