HOPE HAS NO FINISH LINE Swim Across America – Nantucket has raised more than $3 million over the past nine years to support cancer treatment and patient care on-island. Each year, over 400 swimmers, volunteers, spectators, and supporters gather at Jetties Beach for the annual swimming event to raise money for Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket (PASCON). The money raised directly benefits our friends and neighbors. Annually, NCH provides over 1,400 cancer treatments and oncology visits, and PASCON provides nearly 300 in-home palliative care visits, always free of charge. Jill Roethke and Jim Pignato, Co-Event Directors, together with a committee of dedicated volunteers, capped off another incredible year with a donation check for almost half a million dollars. With a variety of swim and volunteer options, islanders of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate. ear after year, dozens of volunteers crowd through the door of the modest two-story home at 17 India Street to spend a few hours each day folding clothes, stacking glassware and organizing bookshelves. For some of the volunteers it’s an opportunity to socialize amongst their friends and neighbors in the warm, welcoming atmosphere cultivated by the team, for others it’s a chance to give back to a community. Regardless of their motive, the outcome of their labor is the same, each of these volunteers at the Hospital Thrift Shop are ensuring every person who calls Nantucket home has access to affordable goods, and the highest quality healthcare possible.
“It’s difficult to convey just how remarkable this group of volunteers are.” – Craig Muhlhauser, Chair of the NCH Board of Trustees
“Our number one focus is to provide affordable goods to the community, items come in and almost immediately go back out, providing so much for our community,” said Mary Casey, Executive Director of the Hospital Thrift Shop. “Then at the end of the year, after we’ve cleared everything out, we have this wonderful bonus where we’re able to take what we made and pump it right back into the community through the hospital.” What began in 1929 as a group of town women seeking a way of supporting their local Cottage Hospital by selling recycled clothing and household items, has since grown into a bustling business, with thousands of customers annually, supported by over 150 volunteers. Few of the original thrift shop founders could imagine that their informal efforts, raising just over $603 dollars their first year, would blossom into one of the island’s busiest storefronts, donating just over half a million dollars to the hospital in 2021 alone. “It’s difficult to convey just how remarkable this group of volunteers are,” said Craig Muhlhauser, Chair of the NCH Board of Trustees. “Affordable and Nantucket are rarely words that appear together in a sentence together without a modifier, through these volunteers’ 11

efforts, they’re able to both provide quality goods for our community, while supporting the life-saving work taking place at the hospital each and every day.” In the 93 years since its founding, the Hospital Thrift Shop and its base of dedicated seasonal and year-round volunteers have taken the secondhand donations of Nantucketers and turned it into over $6.5 million dollars toward the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and the health and well-being of the community. “This is something everyone in the community is a part of, whether you donate to the thrift shop, volunteer here or shop here, everyone on Nantucket is able to help give a second life to so many items, while also giving back to our local hospital,” said Casey. While other consignment shops and secondhand stores have sprouted up throughout Nantucket in the years since the Hospital Thrift Shop first opened its doors, none can promise that each donation is put back into the community, both in the form of goods, and in the form of critical funding for healthcare on Nantucket.
“The hospital is near and dear to everyone on the island, as a retired person living on the island, the hospital is an important part of my life,” said Bob Kucharavy, Nantucket resident and Hospital Thrift Shop donor. “That’s why I support the hospital thrift shop, because I look for organizations that are meaningful and where I know where the money goes, and when I donate to the thrift shop, I know every dollar goes right back to the hospital.”

GARDEN CLUB DEDICATION Gary Shaw, former President and CEO of NCH, joined members of the Nantucket Garden Club in July to formally dedicate the outdoor garden at the hospital’s main entrance in honor of the club’s support of NCH. The Garden Club was a generous and early supporter of the island’s new hospital and funded, designed, and planted the outdoor garden currently in place. Their garden serves as a constant reminder to patients and staff that, as Lady Bird Johnson once said, “where flowers bloom, so does hope.”

2021 marked the fifth and final year of NCH’s Community Health Initiative grant program. Over the five years of the program the hospital made a total of $4.5 million in grants to 18 community-based organizations impacting health and wellness on Nantucket. The grants were funded from the hospital capital campaign as part of the Massachusetts Department of Health Determination of Need process. “These funds have completely transformed how the community is able to access services,” said Sunny Daily, of Nantucket Health Imperatives. “Now we can offer something in addition to what the hospital offers, which means that now there’s a place for everyone to access healthcare, now individuals have access to information, support, treatment, and care. That leads to us having a healthy community, where people can not only take care of their own lives, but their families, neighbors and whole community.” “Our community has changed in the five years since this program began,” said Margaretta Andrews, Executive Director of the Community Foundation for Nantucket. “COVID-19 has brought to light some of the hidden needs in the community, like food insecurity and behavioral health, both of which are things we can address now and in the future by making strategic 17

grants, many of which we’ve done through this funding.” Even through a pandemic, the island was able to come together, to tackle the significant issues impacting every member of our community. This year alone, NCH distributed 1.1 million dollars, to nine local non-profits and initiatives that address many of the health and well-being disparities and gaps facing Nantucket. “Since the Community Health Initiative began in 2015, we have worked to lay the foundation for a more connected, more informed, and healthier community,” said Gary Shaw, former President and CEO of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “But as life came to a halt in the face of the most disruptive pandemic seen in over a century, the persistent trends detrimentally impacting our community accelerated. Now more than ever, our community needs collaborative, partnership-based, long-term solutions to the challenges impacting it.” For many island non-profits, the impact of the pandemic on the populations they served was striking. As social distancing and quarantines became the norm, the isolation of living 30 miles out to sea compounded with the added stressors of the pandemic, creating an environment where deteriorating mental health, became the new normal.
“We’ve seen that as the pandemic has worn on, people aren’t getting together with friends as much as they’d like to, or meeting new people, so sadly their support network has deteriorated,” said Elizabeth Congdon, Director of Adult Programming at the Artists Association of Nantucket.
“Nantucket has its own set of challenges, and frankly, it can be a hard place for many to afford the cost of living. For people struggling on a tight budget, these grants are a godsend,” said Congdon. “At the end of the day, the healthier we are, the healthier our community is, the better our Nantucket community will be in general.”
For the Artist Association of Nantucket, grants from the Community Health Initiative helped ensure that as our community emerged from the pandemic, residents had a safe space for personal expression and healing through creative outlets.
Over the funding’s five years, Nantucket Cottage Hospital provided grant support to 18 community organizations including:
“There aren’t a lot of evening activities for social connection here on Nantucket that don’t involve going to a bar or a restaurant,” said Congdon. “This funding allows us to provide classes throughout the off-season that create a fun, safe, and sober atmosphere, where students can explore their creativity. We encourage people to leave their inner critic behind and enter a world where they can be in the moment and feel good about themselves–that’s the best way to start on a healing journey.” While this year marked the final year of funding, the impacts from this five-year partnership with our community will continue to benefit and enrich the wellbeing of everyone who calls Nantucket home.

HONORING COMPASSIONATE CARE Ugne Aleknaite, the program leader for hematology and oncology at NCH, was awarded the 2021 Seinfeld-Hartmann Prize for Compassionate Medical Care. Aleknaite holds a Master of Science in Nursing from Mass General Hospital Institute of Health Professionals and is a Certified Nurse Practitioner with certifications in Adult Gerontology Primary Care, Chemotherapy Biotherapy, and Functional Medicine. Ugne was nominated by a patient’s family members for providing exceptional care to their loved one in their final months of life. One family member noted, “Ugne has a really special way of being able to deliver devastating news with empathy and true humanity. So many medical professionals could learn from her, how to be empathetic and caring, but also how to be realistic and honest. It is a real balance that I have rarely seen in a caregiver. When my [family member’s] condition was deteriorating, she spoke to us with such grace, but also with an understanding that the news she was delivering would change our lives.” The Seinfeld-Hartmann Prize for Compassionate Medical Care was established by Judith Greenberg Seinfeld, in honor of her late husband, Dr. Robert H. Seinfeld, and the comfort he received from hospital staff at the end of his life. In 2021, Judith Greenberg Seinfeld doubled the annual award to its current value of $4,500, in memory of her late son Steven Greenberg. For Steven, Nantucket was a long-time home away from home, an island he came to love after decades of visits. During the last year of his cancer treatment, he came to know firsthand the true value of compassionate care, both for patients, and their loved ones. In addition to honoring Dr. Robert H. Seinfeld and Steven Greenberg, the prize also celebrates Dr. Margot Hartmann, who served as President and CEO of NCH from 2010 to 2019, leading the charge to secure the future of healthcare on Nantucket with a new, stateof-the-art medical facility that opened in 2019.

110TH ANNUAL ME ETING NCH hosted its 110th Annual Meeting virtually in 2021, led by Craig Muhlhauser, Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Gary Shaw, former President and CEO, the meeting focused on the future of healthcare on the island through primary care and whole-person health and wellness. The NCH Board of Trustees also welcomed one new member, Lisa Clarey-Lawler, and thanked three outgoing members, Jack Burke, Dr. Bruce Chabner and Liz Winship. NCH announced its annual awards to staff and community members who have made significant contributions to the mission of NCH over the past year, including:
Dr. Elizabeth Hallett Recipient of the Sandy Craig Leadership Award “When Dr. Elizabeth Hallett became the Superintendent of the Nantucket Public Schools on July 1, 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic she was stepping into an extraordinary leadership challenge. Five weeks later, she presented the community with a 50-page comprehensive plan for safely reopening the Nantucket Public Schools in a new hybrid model of education. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Hallett coordinated closely with NCH and the Nantucket Health Department to provide for the safety of NPS employees, students and their families.”
Melanie Sabelhaus Recipient of the Bruce A. Percelay Philanthropy Award “Melanie Sabelhaus has been a member of the Board of Trustees and Chair or Co-Chair of the Marketing and Development Committee since 2018. Her impact on philanthropy at NCH goes back much further. She has Chaired the Boston Pops on Nantucket twice and her energy and innovations transformed the Pops into Nantucket’s most treasured event. She was also a founding Co-Chair of the popular Women+Wellness event, hosted each summer. Most recently, her relentless effort to build support for NCH despite the cancellation of The Pops concert in 2020 and 2021 has been critical to NCH’s financial stability.”
97.7 ACK-FM, Nantucket’s True Island Radio Recipient of the Phil Murray Business Award “97.7’s radio and digital media company is a trusted partner that was instrumental in communicating NCH’s messages to the community throughout the pandemic. As COVID information was constantly evolving, NCH relied on Executive Vice President, Laura Burnett and her team to quickly relay messages to the community and their efforts contributed significantly to the success of the testing and vaccination programs island wide. Owned by Jeff Shapiro, the company’s media products include the radio stations 97.7 ACK-FM and 89.5 Quahog Country, and the digital newsletters Daybreak and Mahon About Town.”
Meryl Bralower Recipient of the Myrt Eldridge Volunteer of the Year “Meryl Bralower is one of three women who co-founded Women+Wellness, an annual event that brings likeminded individuals together to learn about health and wellness-related topics from NCH and MGB clinicians. Since founding the event in 2017, Meryl has Co-Chaired each year’s event and personally recruits leading MGH clinicians to travel to the island and participate as panelists. Meryl is the consummate volunteer who is passionate about giving everyone on the island the opportunity to learn about whole-body wellness, including mind, body, and spirit.”

The island’s newest pharmacy, Nantucket Cottage Pharmacy, opened its doors in August at 10 Vesper Lane, providing one-stopshopping for NCH patients and community members. The Cottage Pharmacy is a partnership between Allan Bell, owner of Island Pharmacy and the hospital. Bell was pursued by national pharmacy chains for years but says he chose NCH for its roots in the community and connection to patients as he began to plan for the closure of the pharmacy department at his Pleasant Street location: “There will be continuity, as I step away from Island Pharmacy after 32 years.” His Main Street operation at Nantucket Pharmacy remains intact. “We at NCH appreciate Allan bringing us this opportunity to ensure that his and our patients can continue to get their prescriptions filled at a convenient mid-island location close to the hospital,” said Gary Shaw, former President and CEO of NCH.

Celebrating 25 Years of the Boston Pops on Nantucket Award-winning vocalist Marc Martel will take the stage as the special musical guest at the 25th annual Boston Pops on Nantucket alongside the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, bringing the music of legendary rock band Queen, to Nantucket on August 13th at Jetties Beach. Martel is widely known for his performance as the voice of Freddie Mercury in the 2018 Oscar-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody as well as being selected by the original Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor to front their official tribute, The Queen Extravaganza. His performance will mark the first live Boston Pops on Nantucket in nearly three years, since being postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 1997, the Boston Pops on Nantucket, presented by White Elephant Resorts, Jill and Stephen Karp, and sponsored by Fidelity Investments, continues to be the island’s most beloved summer event, bringing together thousands of community members for a night of unparalleled entertainment in support of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. The event continues to stand as Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s single largest fundraiser, bringing in millions of dollars to help support and sustain the hospital’s operations and its year-round commitment to the health and wellbeing of the island community. “Marc Martel puts on a concert that is simply extraordinary. Jetties beach will be rocking on August 13th!” said Bruce A. Percelay, event chairman along with his wife Elisabeth. Singing the National Anthem will be Nantucket’s Skyler Wright recording artist and cast member of the hit TV show Dexter: New Blood. Learn more at NantucketHospital.org/Pops
Thank you to those who supported NCH through our virtual events in 2020 and 2021. With the cancellation of the Boston Pops on Nantucket two years in a row, your donations meant more than ever. Nantucket Cottage Hospital is grateful for the generosity of our supporters who recognize the vital role the hospital plays on the island.
