ACL Essex is not just about second chances; it’s about third, fourth, fifth and sixth chances. In fact, it is about helping you achieve the goals you have set your sights on, throughout your life. Online and in-person learning Our centres have reopened for Supported Learning, functional skills curriculum areas (English, maths and digital), Beauty & Complementary Therapies, Hairdressing & Barbering, and certain Creative & Cultural Learning courses. Other courses have been adapted for online delivery in our virtual classrooms or via distance learning. Our expert tutors will support you in our virtual classrooms to ensure your learning experience is of the same high quality as you would expect in our centres. 02

Keeping you safe We take the responsibility of keeping you safe very seriously; creating an environment that promotes wellbeing and ensures personal safety, security and welfare. Due to the recent Covid-19 situation, we have taken the necessary precautions in line with government guidance in all our centres. This includes, implementing practices for social distancing, installing cleaning and handwashing stations, conducting regular health checks, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by staff.

We are keeping in contact with our learning community using social media, emails and video communication software, to provide important updates, communicate free learning opportunities and to support our community. A range of online accredited courses have been created to support individuals and businesses with upskilling and retraining over the course of 2021. Dependant on prior achievements, personal circumstances and annual salary, these courses could be part or fully funded. You can then either search for the course title using the search box or browse our website. Once the course has been selected, you will be asked to fill out an enrolment form (non-qualification course), or asked to enrol onto an assessment session (qualification).

Our Ofsted registered preschools and nurseries care for children aged 3 months to 5 years.

We are looking forward to welcoming you back to our salon services as soon as restrictions are lifted. All of our salons will follow government guidance to make sure they are clean and safe for both learners and customers.

Childcare is available to both the local community and ACL learners. Nursery vouchers are accepted and funding* could be available to pay for childcare. Financial Support There are a number of options available to help reduce financial barriers to learning. Our teams are on hand to answer any questions you may have. Full details are available on request and on our website aclessex.com/funding-support

The Discretionary Learner Support Fund Accredited courses (Qualifications & Skills for Employment) This funding can assist learners who are studying an accredited course up to and including level 2. If your gross annual household income is less than £30,000, or you are in receipt of a means tested benefit, you could receive 75% off the cost of your course Additionally, it can be used to help with the cost of childcare, study resources including compulsory books, membership fees and travel costs.

The Community Learning Bursary Fund Non-accredited courses (Creative & Cultural Learning) This funding can assist learners who are studying non-accredited courses with ACL. If your gross annual household income is less than £30,000, or you are in receipt of a means tested benefit, it can be used to help with the cost of course fees (not concessionary), childcare, study resources, and travel costs.

Learners in Receipt of a Low Wage If you earn less than £17,004.00 annual gross salary you could study an accredited course up to and including level 2 without having to pay. Additionally, you could access the Discretionary Learner Support Fund to help with the cost of childcare, study resources including compulsory books, membership fees and travel costs.

19+ Advanced Learner Loan If you want to study at an advanced or higher level, you can apply for the Advanced Learner Loan. The loan is not means tested and can pay for courses at levels 3 to 6. You’ll only repay your loan when your income is over £511 a week or £2,214 a month (before tax and other deductions). Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a higher education course. This means you do not have to repay it. You may also be eligible for money from the Advanced Learner Loan Bursary Fund if you need help with some costs while studying, for example childcare, travel or trips related to your course Full details including how to apply can be found at www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan

The Nightingale Bursary To celebrate the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale and the 50th anniversary of Adult Social Care Services becoming part of the Local Authority, Essex County Council is proud to launch the Nightingale Bursary.

The bursary will fully fund courses for existing care employees who are not eligible or suitable for an apprenticeship and would normally have to pay towards their training. This bursary is suitable for those employees looking to gain formal accreditation to support their role or improve their skills in the Health & Social Care sector. Taster/Short Courses A short course for people wishing to try learning a language before committing to a longer course. No previous knowledge is necessary. Starter For complete beginners who have no previous knowledge of the language. By the end of the course you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to ask and answer simple questions, and will be familiar with a handful of useful everyday expressions. Improvers You should have studied the language for at least a year or be able to ‘get by’ in a limited number of everyday situations, such as basic shopping, ordering a meal and understanding simple directions and times. You will revise previous learning and will learn how to talk simply about yourself, your interests and gain further vocabulary and grammar language knowledge. Intermediate You should have studied the language for 2 or 3 years and be able to exchange basic information about yourself and others and state simply what you did. You will revise previous learning and will learn further past and future tenses to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

You will learn to converse simply but accurately on a variety of everyday topics, read and understand short texts and write messages and short letters. Advanced For those who have studied the language for at least 4 or 5 years and who wish to consolidate and extend their skills. Apprenticeships & Work Based Learning Guide to Level Progression Level 2 Intermediate level designed for new entrants into a subject area or sector. Level 3 Advanced level which assumes prior achievement at level 2 or previous study/work in relevant subject area. Levels 4&5 Higher level programmes designed for those already working in the sector and looking to develop their skills up to degree level.

Adult Learning Course Guide January-July 2021

There is no upper age limit on apprenticeships, so they are suitable for everyone. You may be looking to gain your first step on the career ladder or be looking for a career change. 20% of your contracted hours will be spent in some form of ‘off job learning’ activity. We will work with you and your line manager to set up a programme and agree a learning plan. The apprenticeship lasts from 15-24 months depending on the type and level being undertaken. If you do not already have grade C (or suitable equivalent) or above in maths and English, you will be required to do this as part of your programme. Apprenticeships are also suitable for people who are already employed but require additional skills to meet the needs of their role e.g. promotion or change of job. Apprentices do not contribute to the cost of their programme – your employer will either pay the full amount through their apprenticeship levy or contribute towards the cost with the remainder funded by the government. Work Based Learning You will need to be employed in the sector that you are looking to undertake your qualification in. Programmes are available at levels 2 through to 5 and are suitable for people wishing to develop their workplace skills. You may be required to attend some classroom sessions which could be outside of normal working hours. You will have a dedicated tutor who will visit you in the workplace, set you work and observe your workplace practice. Funding could be available to help pay for your course e.g. Advanced Learning Loan or a bursary to pay for things like books or a laptop for the duration of your studies.
