Increase quality time on your home’s porches and patios Enclose your unheated spaces and enjoy them well into the winter!

Embarrassed by the condition of your deck or patio? Now is also the time to make your decks look like new without total replacement. Deck tiles are attractive, hard as nails, and stand up to pouring rain, freezing snow or blazing sun. SwiftDeck Ipe tiles are built with one of the world’s hardest and most durable wood species, kiln dried under controlled conditions and secured to a sturdy UV resistant base with stainless steel screws. You’ll still be enjoying your SwiftDeck Ipe wood deck long after inferior wood tiles have cracked, rotted, fallen apart with rusted screws and been consigned to the trash. Tiles composed of other materials also available.

As the weather grows colder, more and more homeowners are seeking a way to extend the time they can use their unheated living areas. Before the depths of winter make your unheated living areas too uncomfortable to use, make fall last longer and spring come sooner with an enclosure by Outdoor Living. Outdoor Living’s affordable vinyl enclosures take the chill out of the air during the shoulder months before and after winter and with no construction muss and fuss allow homeowners to get more use out of their porches and patios. PGT® Eze-Breeze® Sliding Panels are made of vinyl which has the transparency of glass without the weight, cost and fragility. They are easy to clean, tough and durable. an any of us believe it’s December already? Seems to me that my June landing in Georgia was only yesterday. The days turn into weeks, the weeks into months and, months into years faster than a blink of the eye. I certainly hope that everyone got out and enjoyed the fall festivals. It seems impossible to attend them all Completing these three– brand new to me– issues of Appalachian Country magazine has been… well it’s been lots of things. At times it’s been daunting, confusing and hectic. Cajoling some of you to get your ads and articles in on time, and then giving everyone up to the last minute has kept me burning the midnight oil and maybe making a few oops-ees. Deadlines are always challenging. Trying to come up with new ideas that Jodi hasn’t already done is nearly impossible, yes as you all know, she’s that good. However putting all of those hiccups aside, there are two rewarding pieces of this process that I didn’t expect. I’m genuinely pleased to be meeting so many new friends of all stripes who are never too busy to help me when I have a question or need a favor. The other piece, and I think most rewarding, is being able to lend a hand in our community’s growth through AC magazine’s advertising and articles. We all know it’s tough out there and it makes me feel needed to have a part in driving even the smallest amount of traffic to our local businesses. So thank you all for hanging in there with me. We have lots going for the holiday season, great restaurants, community service and family tradition articles as always. Terrific shopping features including a Holiday Gift Guide, a behind the scenes look at north Georgia’s most popular Santa, things to do in Ellijay and the opening of Blue Ice ice skating rink in Blue Ridge. Better sharpen those skate blades! Ring in the New Year at Cartecay Vineyards– our cover story– and Ellijay's own winery. During the photo shoot I had the pleasure of tasting a few of their wines so I can say with certainty that a visit to the winery won't disappoint. Let us help you keep those New Year’s resolutions with our annual Health & Wellness feature; New Beginnings. As usual there’s something for everyone. Don't let 2013 pass you by without taking advantage of the information included here. Our upcoming February issue will focus on the area’s best venues and resources for planning a spring or summer wedding. We plan to feature everything from catering and florists to photographers, wedding planners and of course that perfect venue. We'll be expanding our circulation for this issue to cover bridal shops and wedding planners in the greater Atlanta metro area. I sincerely hope that this wider circulation brings more business to our advertisers. Lastly, on a personal note, Xena and I recently added a new member to the family. We adopted a little old man Beagle from the animal shelter who was in sad shape. After 2 months, he's fat and happy, livin' the life that all dogs should! The Boy

For the Cheesecake Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Add sugar and beat until well blended. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition. obody longs for a safe and loving family more than a child in foster care. They are helped by a group of adult volunteers. As a CASA volunteer, you are empowered by the courts to help make this dream a reality. You will be the one consistent adult in these children’s lives, vigilantly advocating for and protecting their fundamental right to be treated with the dignity and respect every child deserves. You will not only bring positive change to the lives of these vulnerable children, but also their children and generations to come. Help us reach every child in need. And in doing so, you will enrich your life as well. 8

WHAT DO CASA VOLUNTEERS DO? CASA volunteers listen first. Then, they act. Volunteers get to know the child by talking with everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them.

Get Away From the Crowded Malls & Visit Historic Downtown Blue Ridge

I

WORDS: ray higginbotham PHOTOS: Fannin County Chamber

t’s that time of year once again when the weather outside can be frightful, but the Christmas spirit is alive, warm and delightful in the North Georgia Mountains. We all tend to get a little stressed out during the holidays, what with family coming into town, Christmas parties, and gifts to purchase. So do yourself a favor - take a break during this holiday season and get away from the crowded malls. Visit historic Downtown Blue Ridge for some of the best shopping North Georgia has to offer during Christmas time. You’ll quickly realize that Downtown Blue Ridge is the perfect setting for a relaxing December afternoon. “Silver Bells” plays softly from speakers along East Main Street as jolly shoppers peruse in and out of quaint shops. Jolly chatter can be heard from the diners sitting underneath holly-lined awnings as they sip homemade soups and drink unctous hot chocolate. Children play around charming blowup Christmas decorations and stand in awe underneath the giant Christmas tree in the center of City Park. It's small towns like this that you can only find on postcards. Downtown Blue Ridge offers a plethora of unique baubles and rare finds that are sure to tantalize and intrigue every holiday shopping taste. The Rusted Buffalo, which boasts a wide selection of Himalayan Salt Crystals used to purify air and reduce dust, is one such option. If you’re hunting for a good book look no further than E. Quinn Booksellers, where you can find a lost treasure or view the rare German memorabilia from WW2. architecture and genteel feel. Blue Orleans also uses top notch ingredients, in a way that lends itself well to innovative Cajun,Creole and American combinations. Don’t forget to stop by the one and only Mercier Orchards for a day of fruit picking, cider tasting and delectable selections of fried pies and desserts. Somewhere along the way when I-575 turns into highway 515, you'll notice the difference. The fresh air, the wide open expanses, the gorgous farmland dotted here and there with quaint homesteads. Your holiday worries and stresses, much like the morning mists that roll off of the Blue Ridge Mountains and whisp their way upward into the sky, will dissapear. Visit Blue Ridge, Georgia for the holidays. It's a town you'll never want to leave, much less forget. AC

Mercantile general store or the Blue Ridge Mountain Mall for an incredibly wide selection of gift ideas, from fancy cigars and delectable jams, to name brand knives and hand-knitted quilts. The hungry shopper will find plenty of options to tide over that rumbling belly. If you’re looking for something quick, stop by Sue’s for a burger as big as your head, or head to The Trailer for scratch-made biscuits (made with lard, the only real way to eat biscuits) and sausage. There are several dinein options that offer fine dining at reasonable prices, such as Harvest on Main, which focuses on high-quality American food. Harvest is located in the heart of town, and the chef does a great job of using real, local, sustainable ingredients in creative ways. The ambiance is reflective of the area, with a lodge setting and roaring fireplace. Blue Orleans Bistro will remind you of the old South, with its Victorian

Gift Guide

One of my greatest joys each year is finding the perfect gift for everyone on my list. Letting my faraway family know that I love them think of them often, or recognizing special friends and associates, it gives me great satisfaction to show each and every one of them that I care. As much as I generally dislike shopping, this time of year gives me the opportunity to wander into uncharted territory, like on a scavenger hunt, in my search for the perfect whatever. Making new discoveries and finding shops that are off the beaten path is also part of the fun, even more so if you go with a freind. If you’ve not visited the stores in our gift guide, I urge you to do so and embrace the thrill of the hunt! 10

Did You Know Santa is from Georgia? WORDS: Betty Kossick PHOTOS: Santa Tim ARchives

G

eorgia’s own, Tim Cavender, who is renowned nationally and internationally for his portrayals of Santa Claus, looks forward to visiting you again this Christmas. He’ll arrive wearing his authentic Coca-Cola Santa Suit, with shiny gold buttons, designed by a Hollywood costumer. What else to wear in the state where the drink was brewed in Atlanta? He’s indeed the fashion plate, a model for authentic Santa portrayal. His “Story of the Day” TV appearance with his wife Mrs. Claus (Pam) in 2009, on CNN, is one of Santa’s highlighted memories. That was the year he was asked by a four year- old girl, “Please, bring my daddy home for Christmas.” Daddy was fighting in Afghanistan. That little girl knows there really is a Santa Claus because he brought her daddy home on her fifth birthday, December 18, 2009. Daddy! Birthday! Christmas! Santa sure knows how to make the magic happen! That same Christmas season Santa helped Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue light the Governor’s Atlanta mansion Christmas tree. He’s

December/January 2012-13

returned again and again for that honor. Santa Tim (who resides in Ball Ground) has been appearing in parades, visiting schools, community events and corporate gatherings for nearly 40 years. He’s been featured in newspapers, and other journals such as Georgia magazine, with 1.2 million subscribers, Cherokee Life magazine and has been

highlighted in a book, Hometown Holidays. Santa Tim has made many television appearances, including acting as a guest meteorologist with the weather forecaster for Georgia and visiting Channel11’s Can-a-Thon each year. He and Mrs. Claus have taught other Mr. and Mrs. Claus’ how to perfect their image and work with the media. He’s even worked with the United States Marine Corp Toys for Tots program, all of this Santa experience tucked under his real leather Santa belt of memories, with probably a few of them stashed away in his leather boots too. Nothing’s fake about this Santa’s appearance. He fits the traditional picture of the jolly old elf. Like Coke, he’s the real thing. Don’t miss Santa’s arrival this year in Ball Ground, GA on December 7th. The parade will start at 6:30 PM and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be located downtown in the gazebo for photos. Photos are free, so please bring your camera! AC Contact “Santa” Tim Cavender for your 2013 Christmas events at: 770. 735. 4263, e-mail: tcavender@tds.net Above: The authentic Coca-Cola Santa suit. Cartecay Vineyards’ Southern Appalachian Holidays WORDS: Betty KOssick & Larry Lykins PHOTOS: Kathy LOve

T

here’s a holiday ambiance in the Ellijay, GA, mountains at Cartecay Vineyards that beckons friends and guests alike. The popular facility provides a fun and unique setting to relax, enjoy and host your holiday parties. There’s nothing quite as cozy as driving up the road, spying the curl of smoke from the chimney, and entering the gaily decorated Nealey barn in this singular Southern Appalachian retreat. It simply adds warmth to the season. Caretcay Vineyard’s manager, Kathy Love, points out the quaintness of the popular establishment, “You get a sense of true, rustic Appalachia here.” She notes the authenticity of the Nealey barn and the use of the original structure’s barn wood throughout the tasting barn. “And that helps to create the ambiance of the turn–of-thecentury (1900s) southern Appalachia.” This much desired atmosphere is available for after-hours private holiday parties at the special holiday rate of $250. After-hours parties are available from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., and include the use of the entire facility, including the tasting room (Nealey Barn), the converted hay loft, above the tasting room, and the outside chimney patio area. The converted hay loft can also be rented this holiday season for private parties during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, for the special holiday rate of $125. If special decorating, music, bartending or food is desired, the Cartecay staff can help (subject to additional fees). Please call to inquire: 706-698-9463 (WINE). The gift shop features hand-made candles, set into Cartecay Vineyard’s logoed wine glasses and wine bottles, which are available in a variety of scents. The distinctive chimney logo is also a popular imprint on coasters, cutting boards, tote bags, wine bottle openers, and both short and long sleeved tee and sweat shirts, all of which make great holiday gifts for the winelover in your life. In addition to the retail items in the gift shop, Love makes note of the two new wines Cartecay Vineyards recently released: Chimney Red, a blended red December/January 2012-13

Casual Elegance RUSTIC REFINEMENT WORDS: Betty KOssick PHOTOS: Stacey Lanning

Home décor is about letting your home reflect who you are.

D

Diane Cowart followed her dream by establishing a home décor and design studio, Chocolate Moose Interiors, in Dawsonville nine years ago. She feels they have accomplished the ideal mix of casual elegance and rustic refinement in their vast array of furniture, gifts, antiques and more. Many North Georgia homes (and beyond) are more beautiful because of her dream. She says her life is more enhanced due to the relationships she has formed with her customers. “I have met many wonderful people and am thankful for their loyalty and friendship.” Nothing sparks a designer’s fancy quite as much as getting honor assignments. The Chocolate Moose has been asked to decorate the Music Room and Porte Cochere for Christmas At Callanwolde – Your Home for the Holidays. This event takes place December 7 – 18, 2012. (check out: www. Christmas at Callanwolde.org.) The gothic-Tudor mansion’s rooms will be holiday-showcased by furniture and decorations provided by Atlanta’s top interior designers. However, the holidays are only a part of each year. Chocolate Moose continually strives to please each client to the fullest with his or her décor requirements. We have clients who prefer an eclectic feel, old European, lodge, lake or traditional. One new trend is referred to as contemporary cabin – warm rustic finishes applied to modern shapes, or contemporary finishes on classic pieces. Our staff is knowledgeable about each look. The main objective is to meet the client’s needs according to their budget, how they live in and use their homes. We like to incorporate your existing pieces and work from there. If you are in construction, we will work with you

from beginning to the final build. When asked for consultation with home décor, we point out that decorating is personal. It is about creating an environment that is nurturing, relaxing and welcoming for you and your family. You are the biggest factor in redecorating, the most important source for inspiration. We urge each client to find a starting point – a rug, collection, fabric, art, or paint color – to create a comfortable home. Then the designer can help you think through your lifestyle, bring new ideas to your attention, and help you prevent mistakes. Home décor is about letting your home reflect who you are, Diane says; “thus, great importance should be placed on individual and family lifestyles. What are the living patterns of individuals and the family as a whole? What area needs more structure? At Chocolate Moose, we offer all you need to make your home “you”, from fine furniture to small items for gifts or personal use. I am always looking for the unusual pieces to add to those from various vendors we use for quality furniture, accessories – mirrors, art, pottery, lamps, dinnerware, candles, soaps – and gifts. Local artisans and furniture makers also add to the makeup of our store. In addition to the above, we are also blessed with the talent of Terry Ledwell, respected floral designer. Terry has worked his magic with florals for the last 40 years. He is well known for the unusual and his ability to create just what you want. His work is all through the store, and will also be showcased at Callanwolde in the decorated spaces as well as pieces for sale in the gift shop. There is more…… www.acmagazine.org

Diane also operates Chocolate Moose Consignment adjacent to the retail part of the store. Items are previewed before they are brought in, so the inventory is in good shape and clean. There is a varied selection of antiques, casual, inexpensive or quality furniture and heirlooms for the home. Great bargains abound. With consignment, Diane offers price-tag bargains, frequent shopper cards, and items discounted 10-20-30 percent at 30-60-90 days, respectively. Few items are returned to the consignor after 120 days because turnover at Chocolate Moose is usually quick. There is a generous 40/60 split, as well as store credit with discounts for consignors. The consignment shop also offers the same design and consulting services as the retail area, which includes window treatments and several lines of bedding. A Family JOURNEY

WORDS: Jillian DANIELS PHOTOS: Stacey Lanning & Williams Archives

Left: Owner Russell Williams and his sons, Cash and Cooper, pose in the back warehouse. This page: Russell's grandfather's truck from the 70s and his own modern day truck are a nostalgic reminder of the passing years for the business.

Living in a modern world of corporations and cookie cutter franchise stores, businesses like the Ellijay Tire Company are getting harder to find. They are a reminder of an America where you knew the business owner’s name, where people cared enough to give you a smile and where you aren’t a statistic to a boardroom full of business suits.

E

Ellijay Tire is one of the older businesses in Ellijay. Since 1955, the Williams family has owned and operated their business on the theory that customer service and quality are a way to attract and keep their customers. Once inside the waiting room, customers are welcomed with a cup of coffee and a friendly greeting. Family photos and school sponsor appreciation awards line the walls. It is obviously the home of people who care. Ellijay Tire Company was started in 1948 by Thad Beck and Hub Callahan. In 1952, Russell W. Williams, or “Pa” Williams, as he is known to most everyone in town, bought out Thad Beck’s interest in the company. Three years later in 1955, he bought the rest of it and operated it under the name “Russell’s Recapping.” Pa was legendary for his strength – able to bend construction rebar like it was licorice, or so the legend goes. He could also break down tires with his bare hands. His grandson, Russell, manages the shop today. “I started when I was nine sweeping floors and washing December/January 2012-13

windows,” says Russell, grinning at the memory. “Pa and my dad also taught me how to change a tire by myself.” Russell worked in the summertime and vacations from college helping his parents, eventually coming back in 1996 to work full time. “It always seemed like a good fit,” says Russell. “It’s outside, it’s seeing people, it’s working with cars and I’m in charge of my own future.” The three Williams generations have brought their own changes to the company. While Pa was the one that got it started, his son, Mike, brought the business into a modern age, updating equipment, building stock and suppliers. Then, Russell took steps to have a wider variety of stock, including additional tires and custom wheels, by building a 12,000-square foot warehouse for storage. “We’re constantly searching for market trends and deals to pass on to our customers,” he says. “Anytime we find deals, we stock up so we can pass on the savings to our customers.” He and his wife, Jodi, also initiated a website for the company (ellijaytire.com) that is able to help customers research brands and prices online from the office so they can find what they want immediately. If Appalachian Country

Russell doesn’t have it in stock, he can usually get it the very next day. From talking to him, it’s obvious that he possesses a respect for others and a persistence that pays off for customers because he doesn’t give up on doing a quality job until it’s done right. Thankfully, being independent helps Ellijay Tire Company sell any brand of tire and wheel. While larger chain stores offer a price and then add extra charges, Ellijay Tire doesn’t. They include in their quotes everything that a customer needs to get out the door. They specialize in tires and wheels because the Williams family believes in doing a quality job at a few things instead of a questionable job at many things. “Because we’re established,” says Russell, “our customers can depend on us being here the next day. We’re not going anywhere.” Ellijay Tire Company has grown as the area has grown and attracts customers from around the southeast because the prices and service quality are worth the trip. The company has one of the few Corgi tire changing machines in the area, which changes run-flat tires. They even do many commercial accounts because fleet vehicles need fast service to get back out on the road. “Many people have heard about us by word of mouth,” says Russell. “We have a reputation of caring about what the customer needs. We don’t just sell to make the sale.” Generations of families come back again and again to do business. “Family and loyalty are important to us. December/January 2012-13

We enjoy people coming in with stories about Pa and our ancestors. It’s the result of doing business in a town for almost 60 years.” Russell and his staff are currently planning classes for women and new drivers to educate them on how to keep their car running smoothly (including how to change a flat tire in case of emergency). Russell attributes their success to a good foundation. “I was taught the business by a professional, who was taught by his father—my grandfather. Each of us learned from the ground up; we learned from the experience of the one before us.” The men at Ellijay Tire Company use that experience to the benefit of their customers and they appreciate the opportunity to serve regulars and meet new customers. “We deal with tires every day. Most only do it once in a while. We try to educate our customers and answer any questions they have so they feel comfortable. We do our best because each time when a customer leaves with our wheels and tires on the car, our reputation is also riding on it and we always want him or her to come back.” While they occasionally have sales throughout the year, this

Christmas the tire shop initiated a large wheel sale with almost every in-stock set marked up to $200 off per set (perfect for that person that loves his or her car). They also offer gift certificates which make a great year round gift – very practical, very easy. There are also easy financing programs available if needed. “We understand that when it comes to family, there's nothing more important than safety,” say Russell. “The rugged mountain terrain of north Georgia can take its toll on tires, so it's important for a family's safety to keep their tires working at optimum capacity all the time. We have almost 60 years of experience keeping customers on the road. We've been in business that long because we listen to our customers. We never try to sell something a customer doesn't need and we never sell something low-quality or defective that endangers his or her family.” Russell and his sales staff make a point to listen to what a customer wants and do their best 32

to help find the right tires on the market for the patron.” Years of experience have allowed us the ability to know where to find good prices and good quality. ffering wellness education for customers of all ages is a large thrust of Jasper Drugs pharmacy services. Weight Loss, diabetic management, cholesterol screening, blood pressure, and smoking cessation are areas in which the Jasper’s pharmacists’ are adept. They currently operate diabetic programs at three locations: Jasper Drugs in Jasper, the Pickens County Senior Center in Jasper, and the Fitness Center in Big Canoe. The education process is offered on individual or corporate levels, assisting customers with cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetic drug and vitamin management with adherence to proper medications. New classes for January 2013 are being offered in December/January 2012-13

smoking cessation, weight-loss, diabetic education, and bio-dental hormone therapy, (educating the aging on meds and vitamins). Weight-loss emphasis focuses on teaching people correct eating and exercise habits. Jasper Drugs celebrates its 61st year of service to the community and is proud to be the recipient as one of the top five drug stores in the United States for its Diabetic Education Programs. Pharmacist Jack Dunn notes that, “The most rewarding thing of all is to have the family members tell you how much they appreciate having their loved Above: Pharmacist Jack Dunn eductaes customers of all ages about the health benefits of vitamins. Currently two other pharmacists work alongside Jack Dunn at Jasper Drug Store: John Thomas and Amanda Paisley. Jack’s wife Terry is a pharmacist and works at the foothill location in Marble Hill. For the past seven years Jasper Drugs has been compounding medications for pain, veterinary products as well as bio identical hormone. “And we offer the I-Step Program, which is an arch support system to assist patients with back and foot problems associated with their arches. This is an arch for the shoe that is offered through Jasper Drugs with certified programs and staff to fit diabetic shoes and compression hose,” says Dunn. Jasper Drugs also offers immunizations for shingles, flu vaccine

and pneumonia. “Georgia is at the bottom of the list when it comes to administering the flu vaccine,” Dunn adds. “Jasper Drugs offers the flu vaccine to walk-ins, no appointment is needed. “ Jasper Drugs accepts most medical insurance plans, in addition to assisting customers’ enrollment with Medicare Part D. This service is offered because the paperwork is often a time-consuming and/or confusing undertaking. The Personal Touch

WORDS: Betty Kossick

W

When Dorothy said "There’s no place like home,” she could have been telling people what North Georgia Personal Care, located in Talking Rock, Georgia is about: helping you or your loved ones at home on the intermediate level. Some people need just a little bit of help, others need more. Their services are everything a person can need like light housekeeping, meal preparation, bathing, grooming, errands such as grocery shopping, meal planning and preparation, medication reminders, hospital sitting, and transportation for needs like doctor’s appointments. Personnel are employed for 4 to 24-hour shifts. In–home nurse visits are also available. Thus, healthcare as well as homecare can be provided. They have registered nurses (RN), licensed December/January 2012-13

practical nurses (LPN) and certified nurses assistants (CNA) on staff. Also, as a state licensed in-home care business they accept most insurance, private pay, Veteran’s benefits and worker’s compensation. With an average five-star review rating, NGPC holds to this mission statement: Our goal is to provide the highest quality care with professionally trained

Jasper Family Dentistry = Happy Smiles

D

ental healthcare has come a long way, thanks to advanced technology. What was once unaffordable for some is now affordable for most, and this is especially true with the practice of Jasper Family Dentistry, owned and operated by Spencer and Leigh Griffeth, a husband and wife team of dentists, located in Jasper, Georgia. They’ll tell you upfront that they operate by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” That’s certainly a comfortable way to start a relationship of any kind, especially in healthcare— and in particular dental care because it shoos away the squeamishness that was long associated with “going to the dentist.” Like artists painting portraits, the Griffeths enjoy great satisfaction in seeing the beauty of their finished work—happy smiles. Replacement of missing teeth is a specialty of the dental team by offering three choices: a partial denture, a bridge, or dental implants, which are fast becoming the treatment of choice. They see implants as a better, wiser choice because they price them December/January 2012-13

more affordable than a bridge. Digital x-rays and in office teeth whitening, along with all the other aspects of dental care make dentistry a rewarding service for the Griffeth team. In 2012, they added a second dental hygienist to their practice, so that families can come and be served without long waits. The Griffeths ask their patients to play a personal role by offering any input into what they want. Another expansion with Jasper family dentistry came this past year by taking dental care to nursing homes. Receiving

dental care while living away from one’s home offers a sense of physical wellbeing and encouragement. Education about long-term dental health-care is a priority with the Griffeths because dental problems can be largely prevented. They emphasize that a faithful, at-home dental regime is the best care. Jasper Family Dentistry’s patients range in age from two years to the elderly. For consistent dental care, they emphasize a good tooth brush, dental floss, and routine cleanings to prevent decay, infections and periodontal disease. The dental team is fair with their pricing, offering several treatment and payment options and they accept most insurance plans such as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna Radius, Guardian, Assurant, Americas, Dentemax, Delta Dental Premier. AC To make an appointment to see either Dr. Leigh Griffeth or Dr. Spencer Griffeth, please call 706. 692. 2646. The office is located at 391 N. Main Street, Jasper, GA. 30143. TOYS FOR TOTS

706. 864. 9938

T

oys for tots Began in 1947, when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. The idea came from Bill’s wife, Diane. In the fall of 1947, Diane crafted a homemade doll and asked Bill to deliver the doll to an organization that would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When Bill determined that no agency existed, Diane told Bill that he should start one, and he did! The 1947 pilot project was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign. Marines have conducted successful nationwide campaigns each year since 1948. The initial objective still remains the hallmark of the program today; “To bring the joy of Christmas to America’s needy children.” The Ellijay Georgia Toys for Tots local campaign covers the Gilmer and Fannin County Areas of North Georgia. The primary make up of this local campaign are members of the North Georgia Marine Corps League, Detachment #1280. Local community and church organizations also get involved as volunteers to collect toys from drop off sites, sort toys, take toy requests, fill toy orders, and wrap all of the toys. We are always looking for additional sponsors and volunteers, so please come by our office and apply. This year the Fannin and Gilmer Counties Georgia Marine Toys For Tots Campaign is located in the store front just off the Gilmer-Ellijay Square:
