Ingredients
Ingredients
3 pounds sweet potatoes peeled and roughly cubed 1 cup brown sugar 3 tablespoons butter melted 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup milk as up to 1 cup for desired consistency 2 cups mini marshmallows Toasted Pecans for garnish optional
1 twelve- to fifteen-pound turkey 2 cups Foster's Barbecue Sauce, plus more for serving (optional) 1 cup cider vinegar 1 teaspoon crushed red-pepper flakes 2 tablespoons light-brown sugar Tomato Herb Gravy (optional)
Instructions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and boil sweet potatoes until fork tender; about 20 minutes. Drain. Mash the sweet potatoes with a potato masher until smooth. (Use a hand mixer if you want absolutely smooth with no lumps). Stir in brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and salt until well combined. Add the milk a small amount at a time to reach desired consistency. Spray an 11-inch x 7-inch (medium-sized) casserole baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Spread sweet potatoes evenly in the prepared casserole dish and top with marshmallows. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until marshmallows are golden brown. Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with toasted pecans.

Instructions Rinse cavity of turkey, and pat dry with paper towel. Place turkey, breast-side down, in a deep bowl or roasting pan. Combine barbecue sauce, vinegar, pepper, and sugar; pour over turkey. Let marinate, refrigerated, at least 8 hours or overnight. Light a charcoal fire, and let it burn until the coals have become a white ash. Alternatively, heat half of a gas grill set on medium-high. Brush the entire turkey with the marinade. Place the turkey on the grill, breast-side up, near but not directly over the coals, or on the side of the gas grill that is not turned on. Close the grill lid, and cook turkey 4 to 4 1/2 hours, until the internal temperature in the thickest part of the leg and breast is 160 degrees. Baste with the marinade every 30 to 45 minutes, rotating the turkey a quarter turn each time. Add coals heated in a firestarter chimney as needed to maintain an even temperature. When the turkey is fully cooked, remove from the grill, and let sit for 15 minutes before carving. Serve with tomato-herb gravy if desired, or additional barbecue sauce.

Recognizing and Observing the National Day of Mourning In November 1972, Wamsutta Frank James, an Aquinnah Wampanoag Elder and Native rights activist, called for a protest against the Thanksgiving celebration in Plymouth, Massachusetts. This protest marked the beginning of the National Day of Mourning.
In the heart of November, many of us in the United States look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday—a time when families gather, tables are laden with traditional dishes, and gratitude fills our hearts. But as we come together for this holiday, it's essential to acknowledge that Thanksgiving has a more complex history than the story we were often taught in school. Today, we'd like to share a different perspective, one that honors the traditions of Indigenous Americans and recognizes the National Day of Mourning. Long before the arrival of European settlers, the indigenous people of Turtle Island, as America was once called, celebrated Thanksgiving about 13 times a year. These celebrations were deeply rooted in the natural rhythms of the land, aligning with the changing seasons and the abundance of the Earth's gifts.
Different seasons brought various berries, fruits, and harvests, each celebrated in its own way. Tribes came together, strengthening their kinship through shared songs, stories, and trade. These traditions persist today, illustrating the resilience and enduring culture of Indigenous communities. However, the story that many of us are familiar with —the so-called "First Thanksgiving"—is a romanticized account that has obscured the history and struggles of Indigenous peoples. This distortion, which has been perpetuated through written accounts and historical narratives, is part of what Chenae Bullock refers to as "paper genocide." This term describes the erasure of Indigenous history and culture through the manipulation of historical records.
Ironically, the term "thanksgiving" first appeared in a proclamation by Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop in 1637. It was a day of celebration following the massacre of the Pequot village by English settlers. The proclamation aimed to erase the Pequot people from history, outlaw their identity, enslave thousands of them, and commemorate their vanquishing. This tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving after violent events continued throughout the early colonial period. It wasn't until President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation that Thanksgiving became an official national holiday. Many Indigenous tribes on the East Coast have suffered from this historical distortion, leading to a widespread lack of awareness about these harsh truths.
As we observe Native American Heritage Month, let us not only learn about the history of the local Indigenous Peoples but also find ways to support their resilience and activism.

Cherokee and Muscogee Indians lived in this part of the Georgia Territory long before the American Revolutionary War began and ended. They used the heavily forested lands as their hunting grounds. The 1830 census showed only five counties, and Gilmer was within the Hall and Gwinnett County lines. The census records listed Cherokee families separately from “mixed-bloods,” who were listed as “free colored persons” on the last pages. Both were listed by the names of the head of household.
It was estimated that 250 whites were living in the land, exclusive of the missionaries, traders, and peddlers. Of those 250 people, one hundred had Indian families. Several small communities are found in the records of what became Fannin County. One such was the Douglas community. Although no one seems to know how it got its name, they remember Indians were living there long before the railroad found its way through the hills in the 1880s. Afterward, the name of the community was changed to Mineral Bluff. Fannin was named after Col. James Walker 30
Fannin Jr. He was a military officer, planter, and slave trader who served in the Texian Army during the Texas Revolution. The Fannin Memorial Monument marks the spot where over 300 Georgians died in Texas on March 27, 1836. Fannin County was named in January of 1854 when parts were taken from Gilmer and Union counties. Shortly after this time, the cities of Blue Ridge, McCaysville, and Morganton were formerly named. Toccoa, Hemptown, Douglas (Mineral Bluff), and Epworth were unincorporated communities at that time. One of the first white settler families was that of Frazier Galloway and his wife, Lavisa McClure. He had come from Virginia and had been born about 1802. They settled along the Toccoa River in 1822. Galloway was appointed an Indian agent. His duty was to keep the peace between the settlers coming into the area and the local Indians. When the Removal came in the late 1830s, his duties changed to providing the militia with money and goods needed for a successful transition. Imagine how Galloway’s children felt about losing their childhood friends, or how the new settlers felt about losing their new friends. The Cherokee had helped them build their cabins and taught them how to farm the land for successful crops, especially corn, beans, and squash. They also protected their children from wild animals that could harm or kill them. Fort Chastain, located at Star Creek on the Toccoa River, was one of the collection points. Now located under Lake Blue Ridge, it was located on land owned by Benjamin Chastain, a farmer and Indian agent. Orders from the Georgia government were to remove the Indians to Fort Butler in Murhpy County, North Carolina. Stories handed down remind us that the indigenous people were here. They left names on places where new residents settled, but had little idea of what the names meant. Cowee Town, Stecoah, or Toocowee, meaning “pig fat” is an example. Sugar Town, Kulsetsi, which means honey locust, Fighting Town, and Walosi, meaning Frog Town, are other names and examples from the area. ACLM
