Looks like Fall is officially gone y’all. We had glorious colors across the mountains this year with moderate temps, bright blue skies and, many almost-too-perfect days. Loads of tourists, who keep our rural community thriving, come to view this spectacular display that Mother Nature gifts us every year. Rafting and tubing businesses have shut down, apple houses have opened, and everything pumpkin-spice has arrived.
Celebrating the harvest and saying goodbye to summer has been an important part of our culture for centuries. All the hard work that went into seeding, growing, and harvesting crops is done. Stores of food, for people and livestock, have been put up. It’s a time to kick up our heals before hunkering down for the longest days of Winter.
Halloween was tons of fun with all the kids– and adult kids– swarming the downtown streets in crazy costumes, high on sugar, full of laughter and probably some mischief, but no one’s telling.
And Maxine and I actually won a costume contest at a party hosted by Copperhill Brewery. At the last minute, Maxine decided she wanted to go as a Corgi (well, not really) and I as her Queen. We dashed around and cobbled together our costumes, including a be-dazzled Burger King Crown for me and a jeweled collar and leash for Maxine. There were so many great costumes, we were totally shocked to win. But, oh what fun!
The Holiday Season is now upon us and everyone is gearing up for the celebrations. Old Toccoa Farm opened its new Golf Shop and the exquisite Tavern this summer. What a wonderful backdrop for spending time with family and friends. Looking out from the deck across the fabulous golf course spilling out of the mountains and the Toccoa River sparkling against the sky is a sight no one should miss. The Tavern is open to all, with reservations required for non-members.
If you’re looking for charitable giving this year, whether monetary or by volunteering, you’ll find two local groups here that fit the bill: Friends of the Gilmer County Library (well- any library) and The Pickens County Veteran’s Memorial Park. Both organizations work toward bettering our communities through caring, service, and education.
Plus, there’s our Holiday Gift Guide. Avoid the mall and have some fun with friends shopping in our quaint mountain towns. We also have a four cool cookie recipes and a calendar chock full of arts, events, and activities for all ages. Check out the many Holiday and New Year’s Eve events. Before we know it the Holidays will be over, the days become longer, and we’ll be turning toward Spring. Our February/March issue will cover Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and all that’s happening right here in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. The Friends of the Gilmer Library is an organization of like-minded volunteers who love to read and appreciate libraries.
Dedicated to supporting the library in Ellijay, they provide time and funding that enable the library to purchase additional materials and assist with the library’s programs. The Friends of the Gilmer Library encourage members of the community to join them as there are many volunteer opportunities that allow Friends to engage in meaningful, purposeful, and valuable activities that strengthen our library in Ellijay.
A popular spot to volunteer is The Bookshelf. Housed within the library, The Bookshelf is where you’ll find used books, magazines, and other gently used reading materials for sale. Volunteers can help out on a regular basis or substitute when needed. Donations of gently used hardback books, paperback books,
comic books, movies on DVD, music CDs, current magazines, and jigsaw puzzles are all appreciated, with fiction being one of the most popular genres.
The Friends provide snacks for one or more of the library monthly programs. Prewrapped contributions are welcome, as well as hands-on participation in set up, serving, and clean up.
The Library presents a Festival of Trees each December, and the Friends decorate and display a themed tree. This year the Friends’ theme is “Be a Super Friend of the Library.”
As a member of The Friends, not only will you participate in library events, but you’ll have the opportunity to work with the community. One of many examples was providing candy for Ellijay’s Trick or Treat event at Harrison Park. Other valuable benefits of being a Friend are camaraderie, making new friends, and the feeling of joy that comes with giving back.

The developer of Old Toccoa Farm is adding new real estate to the market with the soon to be launched Mountainside at Old Toccoa Farm. This never before developed land within Old Toccoa Farm, will offer 50+/- residential lots certain to draw attention to interested buyers.
Mountain views, private estate lots, all with state-of-the-art utilities services, including fiber optics, private sewer, City of Blue Ridge water and underground power. Old Toccoa Farm Realty is now taking reservations for the release of this new real estate as well as another phase of cottages that will be offered around the first of the year.
There is much to be excited about, and 2023 is setting up to be another strong year for this one-of-a-kind community, located five miles from Historic Downtown Blue Ridge.
Accolades keep pouring in for Old Toccoa Farm’s golf course. The course conditions are best in class with beautifully maintained zoysia fairways and tees, and meticulously maintained bentgrass greens. The enhancements to the golf course and the opening of the new Golf Shop and The Tavern, have transformed this community into a destination golf experience on par with some of the best in the United States. “It’s truly humbling to see how our 2022 Golf Digest rating has affected our consumer reach within our golf operations. We are now welcoming golfers from all over the world. We still pull a majority of our visiting golfers from the southeast, but there is a growing and steady flow of golfers arriving from all over the U.S. and from across the pond.”
With their Hillside Cottages coming online this holiday season, they expect this trend to continue into 2023. “The design and overall charm of our 15 new one-bedroom, Hillside Cottages have us really excited for 2023.” Current members building their homes will finally have a place to stay during the 10-month construction schedule and other members who have not yet decided to build, will now be able to visit with convenience and stay “within the brand” rather than renting a cabin outside the community. “It’s only right that we have facilities here to serve our members and their guests. This has been a long time coming, but we couldn’t be more excited to bring these units online. Vicky Decker, OTF member and owner of New Blue Home in downtown Blue Ridge, has designed the interiors of each cottage, to-the-nines, as they say. And the landscaping work from Cartwright Landscaping has created a setting within the hillside, which overlooks the 7th hole and the Toccoa River, a true first-class hospitality offering from Old Toccoa Farm. “When you couple the golf experience with the coziness
and comfort we have here within the Hillside Cottages, along with the culinary experience being developed by our talented team at The Tavern, it’s exciting to think of where we will be a year or two from now.”
The goal is to continue to add value to the community and continue to ensure that it’s done in a responsible manner. Responsible environmentally. Responsible with regards to members. And responsibly as it relates to Old Toccoa Farm being a part of the greater community of Blue Ridge and Fannin County. Changing the area is not in their plans and they are laser focused on adding value to the area in the most responsibly way possible.
Community outreach and member activities are tightly woven into the DNA of Old Toccoa Farm. The developer of Old Toccoa Farm, along with many of its employees and members are actively involved with local charities and support programs, including, River’s Alive, Habitat for Humanity, The Open Arms Home for Children, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc., and Casting for Recovery.
The Old Toccoa Farm social calendar for 2023 should be the best yet. A thriving Ladies and Men’s Golf Association, a growing number of members fly fishing and shooting sporting clays, (OTF enjoys a sporting grounds partnership with local Noontootla Creek Farms) and a robust menu at The Tavern, filled with culinary, viniculture, spirts and music events will provide the backdrop for members and guests to gather and enjoy the beauty of Old Toccoa Farm.

Every December, our kitchens take on a magical transformation. Counters are covered in a heavy dusting of flour and powdered sugar and Red and green sprinkles can be found in every corner.
Whether it’s a plate of family favorites for the kids or five dozen for the annual cookie swap, we’re here to help with new takes on the Holiday Favorites that everyone loves!
Speculaas are traditionally thin, crisp, dark-brown windmill-shaped cookies that originated in the Netherlands. However, you don’t need a mold to be able to enjoy these snapping crisp, delightfully spicy cookies. Try rolling out the dough and using your favorite cutters to make cookies that are just as elegant and fun.
Ingredients Cookies
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom*
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves*
1/2 teaspoon ground mace* (or substitute 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg)
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon*
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup almond flour, toasted almond flour preferred
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 to 4 tablespoons milk (regular or low-fat, not nonfat)
*Or substitute 1 tablespon speculaas spice for the cardamom, cloves, mace, and cinnamon
Icing
1/2 cup confectioners’ or glazing sugar 3 to 4 teaspoons milk or water
Instructions
To make the cookies: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, sugar, vanilla, spices, and salt.
Stir in the flour, almond flour, and baking powder, then enough of the milk to make a stiff dough.
Form the dough into two disks, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 2 hours or more.
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease, or line with parchment, two baking sheets. Working with one disk at a time, roll the
dough 1/8” to 1/4” thick. Cut out shapes using your desired cutters, and transfer the cookies to the prepared pans.
Bake the cookies for 15 to 20 minutes, until they’re lightly browned around the edges. Remove them from the oven and transfer them to a rack to cool. As they cool, they’ll become quite hard.
To make the icing: Stir together the sugar and enough milk or water to create a thick but “drizzle-able” icing.
Drizzle the icing atop the cookies decoratively.
Prep: 15 mins. Bake: 15 to 20 mins. Total: 1 hr 30 mins. Yield: 4 dozen small cookies
A clever reworking of the classic Snickerdoodle, this inspired maple rendition complements apple cider, warm or cold.
Ingredients
16 tablespoons unsalted butter, or a combination of half butter and half vegetable shortening
1 cup pure maple sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon maple flavor
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
Topping
2 tablespoons pure maple sugar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Maple Glaze (optional)
1 1/2 cups confectioners’ or glazing sugar
2 tablespoons maple syrup 2 to 3 tablespoons heavy cream 1/4 teaspoon maple flavor
To make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, sugars, cream of tartar, and salt until fluffy.
Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping between additions. Beat in the maple flavoring.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda, and flour. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and beat until blended.
Refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes, to stiffen it and make it easier to shape.
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease or line two baking sheets with parchment.
To make the topping: Combine the sugars in a small bowl or in a large plastic bag.
Drop the dough by the rounded tablespoonful into the sugar, gently shake the pan (or bag) to coat the balls, then roll them in your hands until they’re smooth and round.
Place the cookies on parchment-lined or lightly greased baking sheets, about 1 1/2” apart. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they’re a very light, golden brown.
Remove them from the oven, and after 5 minutes transfer them to a rack to cool.
To make the glaze: Mix together the glaze
ingredients to make a spreadable frosting. Smooth a thin layer over the cookies, or drizzle for a nice-looking effect.
Let the glaze dry for several hours before packing the cookies in airtight containers. Store for 1 week, or freeze for up to a month.
Prep: 30 mins. Bake: 10 to 12 mins. Total: 1 hr 10 mins. Yield: about 3 dozen 3” cookies
Like every recipe, including the very simplest, this one has gone through a number of permutations.This variation includes espresso powder; it gives the chocolate flavor a boost while adding the merest aromatic hint of itself.
1 1/3 cups chopped bittersweet chocolate or chocolate chips
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2/3 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon espresso powder, or more to taste
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour confectioners’ sugar, for coating
To make the dough: Place the chocolate and butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, and heat or microwave until the butter
melts. Remove it from the heat, and stir until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth. In a separate bowl, beat together the sugar, eggs, vanilla and espresso powder. Stir in the chocolate mixture, baking powder and salt, then the flour. Chill the dough for 2 to 3 hours, or overnight; it’ll firm up considerably. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Lightly grease a couple of baking sheets, or line them with parchment.
To shape the cookies: Put about a cup of confectioners’ sugar into a shallow bowl. Using a teaspoon cookie scoop, a spoon, or your fingers, scoop out heaping teaspoon-sized portions of the dough; they should be roughly 1 1/4” in diameter. Drop the dough balls into the confectioners’ sugar as you go.
Once about five or six are in the bowl, shake and toss the bowl to coat the balls with the sugar. (If you try to do this with too many balls at a time, they’ll just stick together.) Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 1/2” between them.
Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, switching the position of the pans (top to bottom, and front to back) midway through the baking time. As the cookies bake, they’ll flatten out and acquire their distinctive “streaked” appearance.
Remove the cookies from the oven, and allow them to cool on a rack. Store them at room temperature, well wrapped, for several days; freeze for longer storage.
Prep: 20 mins. Bake: 10 to 12 mins. Total: 2 hrs 40 mins. Yield: 5 dozen 2 1/2” cookies
These chai-infused cookies are a spinoff of the classic almond snowball/Russian teacake. Delicately sweetened cookies are the ideal base for the rich, sweet, spicy glaze that gives them their festive look.
1 cup unsalted butter, at cool room temperature, 65°F to 68°F
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chai spice, or 1 teaspoon ginger, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon cardamom, 1/4 teaspoon allspice, 1/8 teaspoon anise (optional), 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup almond flour
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
For extra almond flavor and texture, add 1/2 cup finely chopped, toasted almonds.
Glaze
1 cup confectioners’ sugar
pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon chai spice, or 3/8 teaspoon ginger, 3/8 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon cardamom, 1/8 teaspoon allspice
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
To make the cookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease (or line with parchment paper) two baking sheets.
In a large bowl, beat together the butter, sugar, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and chai spice.
Weigh the flours, or measure them by gently spooning them into a measuring cup and sweeping off the excess. Beat the almond flour followed by the all-purpose flour into the butter-sugar mixture.
Scoop heaping tablespoonfuls of dough — a tablespoon cookie scoop works well here — onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving 2” between them.
Bake the cookies for 13 to 16 minutes, until they’re a light golden brown.
Remove the cookies from the oven and place the baking sheet on a cooling rack. Allow the cookies to cool completely right on the pan.
To make the glaze: Combine all the ingredients, stirring until smooth and adding enough milk to make the glaze drizzle-able, but not too runny; molasses consistency is good.
Drizzle or pipe the glaze over the cooled cookies.
Store the cookies, well wrapped, at room temperature for several days; or freeze (unglazed) for longer storage.
Prep: 20 mins. Bake:13 to 16 mins. Total: 2 hrs 6 mins. Yield: About 33 cookies

The Pickens County Veteran’s Memorial Park is a 501(c3) consisting of veterans and citizens with the courage and heart to embark on a journey to set in motion the construction and continuation of this park to honor and preserve those who have “signed the blank check, up to and including their lives” and “to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.” The Veteran’s Park Memorial was created through a consolidated effort of the citizens of Pickens County, GA. Each individual involved wholly appreciates ALL veterans of all conflicts in which the United States of America has participated.
Located across from Lee Newton Park in Jasper, GA, The Memorial is dedicated to all veterans who have served our country including those on active duty, a veteran does not need to be a citizen of Pickens County to be honored at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. As more conflicts arise, there will be more veterans to be honored, making The Pickens County Veterans Memorial Park an ongoing effort.
With the design of Phase I underway, the Veteran’s Park has started on Phase II: relocating the Monument in front of the courthouse on Main Street in Jasper to the newly constructed Memorial near Lee Newton Park and to make it more inclusive by honoring all 55 service
members from this county who have died in combat in all the nation’s wars. The Veteran’s Park wants the families to know they are being honored by placing the monument as the center piece of the Memorial. Phase II will also include etchings of veterans in photo-realistic uniforms from various wars on finished black granite monuments. The Bricks of honor program is offered to all past, current, and future veterans. Bricks will be placed aside the walkway to remember all who served– regular service Members of the Military, the National Guard and Reservists. Bricks may be donated in the name of a loved one or directly to a Veteran, including those who are not citizens of Pickens County.
The Bricks of Honor include 3 lines of engraving with up to 18 characters per line in all capital letters. For a tax-deductible donation of $125 a 4x8 inch brick honoring a Veteran will be placed at the Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Our goal is to develop a deeper appreciation and community awareness of our veterans whose names will be always remembered through the engraved bricks of honor given by those who

A Flag Box has been placed at the Veteran’s Memorial. If you wish to dispose of your flag properly, bring it to the Memorial and place it in this dignified box. To date, we have collected over 600 flags for disposal.

pushed further east and then further southward. Cherokees are community minded peoples and if one family is forced to move, then others would follow. Europeans called these people Keetoowah, Kitara and other variations of the original name of this band of Cherokee which was Giduwa.
For over twenty years, land cessions kept mov ing various tribal factions across the Southeastern parts of North Carolina and Tennessee.

Sequoyah, was the originator of the language of the Cherokee known as the syllabary.
Oconastota was the chief of the mother town of the Overhill Cherokee at Chota, which had been removed from Tennessee to Georgia, and became known as New Echota.
TThe Cherokees were continually being displaced by white intruders from their very first encounters until total removal in 1838.
One faction known as the Giduwa’s homeland, Kituwah, was on the Tuckasegee River, Swain County, North Carolina near where Bryson City is today. During what became known as the Anglo-Cherokee War 1758-1761, General James Grant of the British military destroyed the town of Kituwah, North Carolina. This war became known as the French and Indian War because the Cherokees had become allies with the French.
Kituwah survivors went west across the Appalachian Mountains and settled in a new township they named Great Island Town on the lower Little Tennessee River. They began min gling with the “Overhill” Cherokee, so called by the European traders and explorers from coastal Atlantic areas because they had to cross over the mountains to find these townships of Indians.
Around 1819 the Euorpean intruder’s greed for more lands to farm found another small tribe of Cherokee full bloods being
The original house was built by an un known Cherokee and repaired in 1840 by the new owners, who were the Coueys, a good example of an intruder’s homestead.
The second township formed by the displaced was known as Big Island Town and was in Monroe County, Tennessee. Many well-known Cherokee leaders were born in this part of Tennessee in the 18th Century. Attakullakulla, known as the “Little Carpenter” and father of Dragging Canoe was from Monroe County. Nancy Ward also known as Nanyehi from Monroe County, was called the beloved woman of the Cherokees.
The Kituwah faction of the Cherokee was once again removed until they ended up in the Northwest corner of what became the state of Georgia. They attempted to keep the name of their township by varying it a little with each move. This time it was known just as Island Town, near Summerville in north Georgia. There is a Wayside Marker near a log cabin that once belonged to Cricket Sixkiller, one of the few Cherokee structures still to be found in north Georgia’s woodlands.
Voluntary removal took the Kituwah from Island Town to Arkansas in the early 1810’s to 1820’s. They formally and federally are known as the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee and are now based in Oklahoma.
Not far from Island Town was the site of the long-gone Dirt Town. Records show that this little township was only 15 miles from some of the most wealthy and influential Cherokee citi zens. But ultimately it didn’t matter if you were a rich or poor Cherokee, all were subjected to the cruelty of the Final Removal of 1838.
Another Wayside Exhibit stands near a cabin that has been partially rebuilt. Records show that Eskalo’s Cherokee estate was valued at $296 while just 15 miles downstream, Major Ridge’s estate was valued at $81,000. Both townships were located in Chattooga County.
A third Wayside Exhibit is dedicated to Sequoyah, the man who created the Cherokee alphabet to form a language his people could read and converse in. Records show that George Gist (Guess), known as Sequoyah, had come to this part of Georgia in 1821. He later returned to recoup his 86 character syllabary, however his
