“Fashion and Costume can be considered two expressions of the same art. We like to think of them as also part of Human’s Culture and Nature. This is probably why society has always communicated its style through this Art as its meaningful and symbolic character. Custom and costume become the combination of the ever changing world of Fashion and the endless evolution of human life, marking the level of sensitivity of each era and culture.” Rosana Pistolese, Founder of Accademia di Costume e Moda, 1964

“We consider Costume and Fashion two essential pillars of our culture. That’s why we chose to focus on both issues combining them with the surrounding worlds of design, culture, research, tradition, innovation, craftsmanship, product making shaping future professionals geared for the ever demanding industry. Favoured by a one and only opportunity offered by our exceptional location that has hosted us for the last 50 years: Rome.” Fiamma Lanzara, President of Accademia di Costume e Moda since 1990

ALUMNI NETWORK

I

n its 50 years, Accademia has developed many talents in all its fields of reference. We cannot possibly list them all but we can give you a slight taste of some of their most outstanding achievements. Among our ex-students we can find famous Creative Directors of some of the most important fashion houses, such as Alessandro Michele for Gucci, Frida Giannini, Aldo Maria Camillo for Cerruti, Raffaele Borriello for Maison Leonard. Others instead, have decided to run an independent career creating their own brands - Maurizio Galante (Maurizio Galante Haute Couture), Tommaso Aquilano (AQUILANO RIMONDI and Creative Director together with

Marella Ferrera (MARELLA FERRERA), Bruno Simeone (Rossorame). While some have become Head Designers or Line Managers for fashion companies like Valentino, Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Plein Sud. And to make the list even more complete we must not forget our many Senior Designers working for the fashion industry both in Italy and abroad for companies like Max Mara, Givenchy, Dolce e Gabbana etc. As for the show business, among alumni Isabella Rossellini, we are the proud starting point for Academy Award winners like Manlio Rocchetti (“Driving Miss Daisy”) also nominated for the BAFTA Awards for “Gangs of New York”, and top level costume tailors like Francesca Sartori and Gianna Gissi, both winners of several David di Donatello, Stefano Canulli illustrator and costume designer (e.g. Cirque du Soleil), Vrettos Vrettakoscelebrity designer for Bejoncè and Jennifer Lopez.

BOOK & MAGAZINE LIBRARY

T

he library and the archive of the Accademia di Costume e di Moda have been inserted in the Project “1900 Fashion Archives” promoted by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. Our library property counts around 3.000 units and it grows year after year thanks to continous purchases and donations. We also have a magazine library that preserves original copies dating back to 1876. Among the subscriptions with high historical and bibliographic value there are “Bellezza” and ”Harper’s Bazaar” (donated by fashion journalist Irene Brin), “Vogue”, “Crapouillot”,

“Draper’s organiser”, “Sipario”, “Il dramma”, “Boehn von Max - Die mode”, “Fashion”, “l’Officiel 1000 modeles 2006”, “Textile vie”, etc. The archive has been affirmed by the regional board of the ministry of cultural heritage and environmental conservation, as of “important historical attention”. The core of this documentation is constituted by the papers of Rosana Pistolese, founder of the Accademia. Over the years the library and its archives have been further enriched by works donated by distinguished costume and fashion personalities: Elio Costanzi (scriptwriter and professor); Ottavio Spadaro (director); Bruno Piattelli (designer); Maurizio Monteverde (costume designer and professor).
