‘THEY DIDN’T JUST GO AWAY’

AV seeks to replace golf course clubhouse BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Job seekers still face uphill battles, despite improving job reports BY JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM SUN NEWSPAPERS The numbers may rise and fall, but the fact remains that millions of Americans are still out of work. While the numbers can try to capture the big picture, they don’t do a very good job of capturing the people comprising the masses that create the statistics and percentages. More than a year ago, the Sun-Current did a story on a job transitions group at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan. We spoke not only to the group’s leader, Catherine Byers Breet, but also to several job seekers. All expressed hopes of finding work, and during the past year, all did. A recently formed taskforce will take a swing at replacing the nearly 35-yearold clubhouse at Valleywood Golf Course. During its April 14 meeting, the Apple Valley City Council authorized the taskforce to proceed with an architect to develop schematic plans and an image of what a potentially new clubhouse would look like. The nine-member taskforce is made up of city council members, city staff members and golf course employees. It was specifically created to look into the issues affecting the clubhouse, and its members are working with local architect Wayne Hilbert, who has worked on many other city projects. According to Jim Zinck, general manager of the course, the overall wear and tear is the biggest problem. “We have some serious issues with the building,” Zinck said. Over the last couple of years, the clubhouse and its condition has been the subject of analysis and inspection, which led to an investigation to determine if the foundation was reinforced. “And it’s not,” Zinck said. “The foundation is failing somewhat.” CLUBHOUSE: TO PAGE 22
