You don’t have to run away from home to see a circus close to home. Circus Juventas, North America’s largest youth circus school, will present its 17th annual summer show July 28 through Aug. 14 at its Big Top, 1270 Montreal Ave. in St. Paul. Circus Juventas students from Dakota County are part of the 72-student cast for this summer’s show “GRIMM – Happily Ever After!,” a production based on popular fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. Nick Dahlen of Eagan, 17, will have a prominent role in the production with acrobatic acts, tumbling, and executing flips on the Russian bar. Nick has been taking classes at the circus for six years, and has performed in multiple summer shows. When he was sixth grade, a friend told Nick to should check out the circus. Once he did, he’s been coming back ever since. “I just thought it looked really fun to be performing and it looked really interesting to me,” Nick said. “And how big the show was and the costumes and lights – just how big the production is.” Nick said he enjoys teaching summer classes and taking part in daily rehearsals, but the shows are what get his adrenaline pumping. “I like performing,” Nick said. “It’s the best part about being in [the] circus. It’s when you get to show everything you’ve rehearsed.” Nick and the students will perform the GRIMM production 20 times this summer. The aerial and acrobatic stunts might appear unsafe to the audience, but Nick reassures that the students and coaches know what they’re doing. CIRCUS: TO PAGE 9

Bad choices harm more than just the chooser BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Every weekend, one member of the Sun Newspapers Editorial Staff must pull “Weekend Warrior” duty and work each Saturday and Sunday. Essentially, one of us is on call to report on any breaking news happening throughout our entire coverage area and to get those stories posted on our website. Last week, it was my turn. Being relatively new to the Sun, the July 9-10 weekend was my first “Weekend Warrior” assignment. I had polled a select number of my co-workers on what to expect over the weekend and what was expected of me. The consensus was something along the lines of, “Do what you can. You can’t make the news.” Armed with that profound advice, I plunged into the weekend wide-eyed and ready for anything. What occurred the next two days still leaves me shocked.

MATT HANKEY Community Editor

The first story that crossed my path was the July 8 murder of a Mankato woman. The next day, a Golden Valley man was arrested in his home and eventually charged in the killing with second-degree murder. The man had stabbed this woman to death and dumped her body in broad daylight at 2:30 p.m. near an intersection. Being in the news industry, murder stories come across my path semi-regularly. But they always resonate, especially when I cover them. The second story I came across was the death of a Lakeville man who crashed his plane 30 miles northwest of Rochester early Saturday morning. Not many details were provided by the Goodhue County Sheriff ’s office. All I can do is feel for this man and his family.

I woke up Sunday morning hoping for a less violent news day. I would have been more than happy covering a wayward pet pigeon that meandered into someone’s lawn or been pleased taking a photo of cows causing a traffic jam on a rural road. Instead, the first email in my inbox that morning was beyond grim. My senior managing editor e-mailed me a tip about a fatal accident that occurred in Maple Grove early Sunday morning. He hadn’t seen a print or online story about the accident, but saw it reported on a local metro TV station. For three hours, I scoured the metro websites for any information regarding the accident. I began to hope the accident didn’t occur – that the TV station incorrectly reported an accident as fatal. Unfortunately, a refresh on a website yielded the story I hoped wasn’t a story. A male driver pulled over for allegedly drunk driving sped away from the law enforcement officer who pulled him over. According to authorities, he fled

northbound on County Road 81. When he reached the intersection with 93rd Avenue in Maple Grove, he ran the red light and his car broadsided a vehicle driven by a woman. Both drivers were killed instantly. Two out of these three stories involved deaths that could have been avoided. I didn’t have many details regarding the plane crash, but the stabbing murder and car crash were needless acts of selfishness, bad judgment, and ultimately – disregard for human life. If you’re pulled over for any reason, take your lumps and face the consequences. Fleeing from a law enforcement officer early in the morning – even if sober – can only end badly. The murder leaves me astounded. What can you say to people who may have made up their mind to take someone’s life? A simple plea, like “Don’t do it – think of the consequences,” may not be sufficient. In the end, we need to own our bad decisions and poor judgments before they end up owning us, and worse, cost innocent people their lives.

Compromise is needed To the editor: As of Monday, July 11, I see that our state legislators, Sen. Dan Hall and Rep. Pam Myhra, are accepting their salaries despite the government shutdown. Nice way to lead! I understand that these Republican legislators are afraid to budge from their “Not A Penny More” stance, but they should take a lesson from American History. Throughout the history of our nation, great debates were solved through compromise. Take the Great Compromise of 1787, when delegates to the U.S. Constitutional Convention could not agree on the number of representatives each state should have. It wasn’t until Roger Sherman of Connecticut proposed a “bicameral” or twochambered Congress. We in Minnesota need our own Great Compromise. Throughout history, no one party ever succeeded in bullying to get everything its LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Leprechaun Days, bluegrass festival coming soon to Rosemount Youth rally, chalk drawing contest added to this year’s mix BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Along with its longtime favorites, Leprechaun Days celebration has two new features this year. The annual community in Rosemount begins Friday, July 22, and ends Sunday, July 31. This year’s celebration will feature a youth rally and a chalk drawing contest, along with the host of longtime favorites. Laura Briggs, Leprechaun Committee president, said the Rosemount Youth Commission is putting together a youth rally Tuesday, July 26. The purpose, according to Briggs, is to show kids ways of getting involved in their community, which includes volunteering. According to Briggs, the Youth Commission is fairly new, and this will be the first rally of its kind. “A lot of kids these days, and teens, are looking for ways to get involved,” Briggs said, adding she hopes that different organizations will be at the event for pro-

vide opportunities for which to volunteer. “I hope this year will be a success, and next year we hope to build on it.” In addition to the youth rally, organizers have planned a chalk-drawing contest for children 2-16, which will be 6-8 p.m., Monday, July 25, in the parking lot of Rapp Chiropractic. Organizer and business owner Nick Rapp said, “We wanted to come up with something kid friendly.” As he described the contest, organizers seem to have met their objective. In the parking lot will be 2-feet by 2-feet squares in grid form for children to create their chalk

drawings, which Rapp said could be anything they want to draw. Rapp added that prizes will be available and that the event should be fun for everyone. Briggs also highlighted some special events. “Of course we have our grand day parade,” she said, adding it will take place 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. Briggs added that there will also be the midsummer fair July 29-30, and the band PopROCKS will perform 7-10 p.m. Friday, July 29, Central Park amphitheater. The Johnny Holm Band will perform 7:30-10 p.m. Saturday, July 30, with fireworks following at 10 p.m.

Leprechaun’s Lost Medallion The annual medallion hunt during Rosemount Leprechaun Days has a new name, prize sponsor and cash award for the fortunate finder. Sterling State Bank will offer a $500 cash prize to the winner of the newly named Hunt for the Leprechaun’s Lost Medallion. This year, the winner will be able to keep the medallion and receive a framed picture of themselves with the prize and a collage of other photos from Leprechaun Days. The hunt will expand from five days to

all 10 days of Leprechaun Days – July 22-31 – provided it isn’t located first. The medallion will be hidden on Rosemount park property and can be accessed by hunters of all ages. Also, searchers won’t have to move, damage or destroy park property in order to find the medallion. Official rules and a picture of the prize will be posted at clue central online at thisweeklive.com. Clues will be published every morning at 9 a.m. at the entrance to Sterling State Bank, 4520 150th St. W., corner of County Road 42 and Diamond Path, and at thisweeklive.com.

Parade Grand Marshal and Junior Grand Marshal This year’s Leprechaun Days parade grand marshal is Barbara Toombs. “I’m very excited,” parade organizer Maureen Bouchard said. “I’ve known the Toombs family many generations, and Barbara is great.” According to Bouchard, Toombs, a mother of six children, started out runROSEMOUNT EVENTS TO PAGE 10

Circus FROM PAGE 1 “To other people, what we do may look dangerous, but to us, they’re not because we’ve been practicing the routines so much,” said Nick, who will be a senior this fall at Eagan High School. Fellow student and friend Dominic Lemieux has been taking classes at the circus since he was four years old. His mother signed him up without his knowledge, but now he is glad she did. He knew he belonged nearly immediately. “I just didn’t think I had found my niche yet and I thought it was this,” said Dominic, who realized he wanted to continue with the circus in his second week taking classes. Dominic will be tumbling, jumping rope, performing the adagio routine, and will play Dopey – one of the Seven Dwarfs. Dominic was assigned the part, but said it was the role he wanted. “It’s just a fun character to do and I get to make people laugh and that is something I have wanted to do for a long time,” Dominic said. “I just get to be really dumb and not know what’s going on,” he said, adding his character does not reflect his actual personality. The GRIMM production features more than 40 intelligent lights, more props than any previous summer show, and more than 4,000 feet of cable. The set – built largely by parent volunteers –

took seven months, hundreds of hours, 40 gallons of paint and more than 90 pounds of screws and nails to complete. The students – none older than 21 years old – will take to the high wire, flying trapeze and Russian swing as part of the show. Though Dominic has not performed in many summer shows, he already has a pulse on all the work that goes into making the performances come alive. “It’s really amazing and incredible to see all these people come and put on this big of a production and to have it all fall into place,” he said. “There are not a lot of words to describe it.” Dan Butler founded the Circus Juventas in 1994 with his wife Betty Butler to let kids showcase their athletic and physical talents in a non-competitive, artistic setting. He echoed Dominic’s sentiment that the way the show comes together is “nothing short of miraculous,” as one critic put it. “The real magic is these kids come from all over, from different financial and social backgrounds,” Butler said. “They come together in a team that supports each other – certainly not competitively – and they learn to really trust each other. That is pretty profound.” Nick said the GRIMM production is not to be missed and audiences will be surprised how many stories they recognize. “I think it’s going to be a really entertaining show for any ages” he said. “It’s going to be really big and it’s going to be a fun story that people are going to be familiar with.”

Rosemount events FROM PAGE 8 ning errands at First State Bank of Rosemount and climbed the ladder over the years. “She currently handles marketing, human resources and community involvement.” Bouchard’s husband, Mike, spoke about this year’s Junior Grand Marshal, an 18-year-old Rosemount teen, Justin Bottem. According to Mike, Bottem originally approached organizers to help at age 13 and has come back every year since, Mike said.

Bluegrass Americana Music Weekend The Bluegrass Americana music weekend takes place July 22-24, and coincides with Leprechaun Days. According to organizer John Loch, the event, which expanded to three days last year, will have a format similar, according to organizer John Loch. “Last year was successful,” Loch said. “We just think this year will be more successful.” Speaking specifically about Friday,

July 22, which will feature square dancing, Loch said that one of the two couples who attended and danced last year as part of a group was a little disappointed in the few people who participated. To correct this, according to Loch, the group will have a “caller” they use frequently. “This [square dance] caller is not only a seasoned caller but also a teaching caller,” he explained. “He uses the ABC method of square dancing, and he will be teaching 15 dance routines. “The club will show what an experienced group looks like, then teach crowd members,” Loch said. “The club is always looking for new members.” As for Saturday, July 23, Loch said, “This is our true bluegrass music day. We have four bands coming in.” One band in particular, Sawtooth, has members from Rosemount. “They draw the hometown crowd,” Loch noted. In between songs, band members will provide information regarding the history of their songs and type of music. Sunday, July 24, will be a little different this year, as it will feature a gospel group, Loch said. Among the bands will be the Golden Swans, a group of elderly African-American males singing spiritual music, something the group has been doing for many years.

Apple Valley boy wins 2011 extreme martial arts world title BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS One Apple Valley boy used to be a little shy, but a steady dose of martial arts training – and winning a world title – has dramatically changed all that. Vladimir Kornev, 8, overcame that shyness through copious training in Burnsville at ATA Martial Arts. After three years, he has not only defeated shyness but also nine contenders this past June at the 2011 ATA world championships in Little Rock, Ark. XMA, an acronym for extreme martial arts, is a martial arts form combining acrobatics with traditional martial arts. In competition, athletes demonstrate choreographed skills to accompanying music. As a martial arts form, XMA has been in existence for about 10 years, according to Joseph Abbott, an instructor at ATA Burnsville. Three years ago, Roman and Marianna Kornev, Vladimir’s father and mother, brought their son to an open house at his elementary school that featured representatives from groups for extracurricular activities. Roman initially encouraged his son to pursue gymnastics training, but Vladimir wasn’t nearly as drawn to this as he was with the information from Burnsville ATA.

Eight-year-old Vladimir Kornev of Apple Valley competed in the 2011 ATA world championships last month in Little Rock, Ark. After qualifying for the international competition, Kornev defeated nine top world contenders to win the world title in XMA, a martial arts form that combines acrobatics with traditional martial arts. (Submitted photo) “We went there, took the programs, and we decided it was best,” Roman said. The Kornevs attended the open house to find an activity for their son “to get

him confidence,” Roman said. “He was kind of a shy kid. [Marianna] wanted him to be strong.” Incidentally, this was when Vladimir

realized that martial arts was an activity that people could do for recreation. “I didn’t know that it was actually a sport,” he said. “I thought it was more like a TV thing. I didn’t know it was out there.” Despite his past impression, Vladimir knew that martial arts was something he could do and do well when he first visited ATA Burnsville. “I was just ready to do it,” he said. “For the first three years, he was attending [XMA classes] six days a week,” Marianna said. “He was the smallest in the class, and everybody gave him a lot of attention.” As his parents had hoped, Vladimir soon began to exhibit more confidence in and out of the classroom. “He began following rules and behaving much better,” Roman said. By the time Vladimir reached the third-grade, his grades improved. Vladimir had been an average student, but eventually started earning B and A grades. As his personal behavior and studies improved, so did his martial arts skills. “The first three years we recognized that he was good,” Marianna said. “And even his [instructors] told us he was good.” MARTIAL: TO PAGE 18

Zombie survival class coming to Lakeville, Rosemount libraries BY HANNAH LUND • SUN NEWSPAPERS Ever wanted to know how to survive a zombie attack? Bud Hanzel and John Olson, authors of “The Do-it Yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse,” will visit to offer tips on surviving a zombie invasion 5 p.m. Thursday, July 28 at the Robert Trail Library in Rosemount and 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Heritage Library in Lakeville. Hanzel and Olson’s book covers survival tips ranging from the most favorable barricades to certain items a survivor must stock up on prior to when the “Zombie Transfer Agent” (ZTA) spreads. “We tend to be more practical and realistic with our planning,” said Bud Hanzel, co-author of the book. “We wanted to make this for the regular guy, not the one with military training. [These tips are] useful, even in non-zombie situations.” The book originated from various conversations he and Olson had after watching zombie movies. What began as

a simple discussion of “Well, what would you do?” has now become a book that, according to the Dakota County Library system, is consistently checked out and requested. “We wanted to do something interesting that teens could find relevant,” said Robert Trail Program Coordinator Ron Hauser. “We’re hoping that this program will help kids use the recent interest in vampires, zombies and other supernatural beings to get interested in reading about them.” “What makes us different from other zombie survival manuals is that we try to follow the logic all the way to the end,” said John Olson. Zombie logic will likely be where Olson and Hanzel will begin their talk. They claim that, since movies are based solely on entertainment, there are many misconceptions surrounding zombies. To demystify such beliefs, participants can expect to learn basic “zombology,” or what makes the undead, well, undead. Olson says that even the classic act of moaning for a zombie is illogical, being

that it is a corpse incapable of breathing. Along with learning more about zombies, visitors can also expect to learn more about what it takes to survive, should they encounter a horde of zombies. For Hanzel, this all comes down to thinking ahead. “You usually don’t think about what you need until you actually need it, but you must be prepared,” Hanzel said. “You don’t want to wade through a horde of zombies because of toilet paper.” Stocking up is only one part of being prepared. Hanzel also strongly discourages picking fights with ZTA-laden corpses. “We’re not so much about fighting, but surviving,” Hanzel said. “Confrontations with zombies never help with that.” Hanzel and Olson will cover more material in their talk, and are more than happy to answer questions regarding zombies and survival. anticipating a zombie confrontation, Robert Trail Library looks forward to a fun evening filled with questions, answers, and even a zombie movie afterward. The pair’s recent visit to Hastings proved that community members were indeed curious about their undead brethren. In a talk that went over 30 minutes, Olson and Hanzel were faced with a horde of questions, all of which they were pleased to answer. “We didn’t even need our PowerPoint presentation,” Olson said. “Once the questions started coming, they didn’t seem to stop, and we love that.” Questions about zombies have spread faster than the creatures themselves, with conventions in Seattle and a recent onslaught of zombie movies. Hanzel and Olson themselves will appear in a local independent film for “Crypticon,” a local horror convention. Martial FROM PAGE 16 Abbott worked with Vladimir as his instructor, in addition to Master Janelle Gleisner, who owns ATA Burnsville. “He was a very shy kid, very talented,” Abbott said. “He really had a hard time coming out of his shell.” Abbott noticed very early in Vladimir’s training that he was flexible and athletic, prompting him to say, “We shaped it.” Before long, the Kornev family was attending tournaments in cities such as Fargo, Sioux Falls, Sheldon, Iowa, and St. Paul. At the same time, Vladimir

began to accumulate one award after another. “We have a big box if you want to see it,” Roman quipped. Abbott explained that when an extreme martial artist competes, he or she accumulates points at different levels of competition. The levels include local, regional, and national, and the competition at each level gets more difficult. This year Vladimir, a first-degree black belt, qualified as one of the world’s 10 best competing at his 8-and-under age level, which placed him on an international stage last month where he performed his routine. From his years of training, Vladimir knew how to remain calm and focused. “In my mind it was to have fun, make

friends and win,” he said. “I wasn’t even thinking of video games or TV.” According to Roman and Marianna, there were about 60 martial artists from Minnesota at the international tournament, and many of them were cheering for their son. Vladimir delivered by beating nine other top world contenders. “The first thing I saw was my mom crying,” Vladimir said of his first recollection after learning he had won the world title. Meanwhile Roman, who was on the floor operating his son’s music for the performance, said he was screaming, “Woo hoo! He did it!” “It was extraordinary,” Vladimir said. Moments later he received a big hug from Master Gleisner, and Abbott said that he “most definitely” felt a sense of pride as his coach.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS RM Arts Council grants The Rosemount Area Arts Council has instituted a new grants program aimed at providing additional arts opportunities to Rosemount area citizens. The organization will award up to five $100 grants per calendar year to individuals or groups that would like to bring into Rosemount some kind of arts program. These can be of any nature or venue. There are very few stipulations. The grant must go for expenses, not payment to an artist. Supplies, rental costs and advertising would be examples of expenses acceptable. Applicants must apply by filling in a one page form providing basic information such as: name, type of project,

expected number of participants, what the funds would be used for, where it would take place, etc. The application form deadline is at the minimum 30 days prior to the event. A Grant Review Board will review the proposal and then recommend to the full board whether to approve the grant and the board will then vote. The applicant would then submit a final report within in 30 days after the event along with copies of expenses. The maximum number of grants to an individual in a single year is one. Forms are available from any board member (listed on rosemountaac.org). and will also be available soon on the same website. For additional information, e-mail infoaac@yahoo.com or phone 651-600-8693.

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Shortly after becoming a professional hockey player, Mike Lundin decided to make Lakeville his off-season home. For at least the next year, it also will be his in-season home. Circumstances aligned at the beginning of the National Hockey League’s free agency period earlier this month, bringing the former Apple Valley High School star to the Minnesota Wild on a one-year contract. Lundin, 26, is a veteran of 224 NHL games, all with the Tampa Bay Lightning. “I grew up watching the North Stars, so of course the dream was to eventually play here,” Lundin said last week while on a family vacation in northern Minnesota. “I always thought the Wild would be a good fit for me since I spend the off-season here. So I did think there was a chance I could end up here.” The Wild was looking for experience on defense after trading Brent Burns to San Jose and releasing Cam Barker, who eventually signed with Edmonton. Lundin is being projected as a top-four defenseman in Minnesota. In 2010-11, Lundin had one goal and 12 assists in 69 regular-season games for Tampa Bay. He had two points and was a plus-4 in the playoffs for the Lightning, which reached the Eastern Conference finals before losing in seven games to eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston. He averaged more than 20 minutes a game in the regular season and almost 15 minutes during the playoffs. At 6-foot-2, 191 pounds, he is regarded as a solid defenseman who moves the puck well and is seldom caught out of position. LUNDIN: TO NEXT PAGE

Hoffmann’s job is to challenge the state’s best golfers

splitting a doubleheader against Eagan on July 16, the Thunder was looking forward to a few days off. Eastview was scheduled to begin play in the Third District tournament on July 20. The Thunder is defending district champion. “We played really well in the Gopher Classic, but we just got tired,” Thunder coach Bob Klefsaas said after the Eagan doubleheader. “We lost 7-5 [to Coon Rapids in the championship game], and we made two errors that cost us three runs. “Even today [against Eagan], we had no spark in the first game, but then we bounced back. That’s all part of Legion baseball.” Eastview took a 22-6 record into the

When Minnesota’s best amateur golfers played for a state championship this week, it was be Apple Valley resident Doug Hoffmann’s job to make sure everything went smoothly. Hoffmann, the Minnesota Golf Association tournament director, is in charge of the organization’s biggest event – the MGA Amateur Championship, which concluded July 20 at White Bear Yacht Club. Although he’s responsible for all aspects of the event from making pairings to arranging for marshals, “setting up the golf course is the most enjoyable part of the job,” he said. “What we want to do is provide an extremely challenging setup, but one that’s fun and fair.” This year’s MGA Amateur was a challenge for Hoffmann, too. The White Bear Yacht Club course, designed in the early 1900s by legendary architect Donald Ross, features rolling fairways, tricky greens and a few blind shots. But, at 6,471 yards from the back tees, it also might be considered short for players capable of 300-yard drives. It’s a stark contrast to last year’s MGA Amateur site, Dacotah Ridge in Morton, which can be stretched to more than 7,100 yards. Before the tournament started, Hoffmann expressed confidence that White Bear Yacht Club’s nuances would keep players from going ridiculously low. “The golf course gives us an awful lot,” he said. “In many respects, it’s a

Thunder goes 17-2 in grueling 19-game stretch BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS At one point this season Eastview’s American Legion baseball team won 22 of 23 games, so losing four in a row last week could have been disconcerting. But the Thunder players and coaches concluded that they were just tired. The Thunder went through a stretch where it played 19 games in 13 days. In those 19 games Eastview went 17-2, won a tournament in New Ulm and finished second in the 66-team Gopher Classic. After closing the regular season by

district playoffs, which run through Saturday, July 23. Three teams will advance from the district playoffs to the state tournament beginning July 29 in Eden Prairie. In addition to catching a second wind just before the playoffs, the Thunder should benefit from the return of starting shortstop Cody Groskreutz, who missed the Gopher Classic while on a baseball trip to Europe. Groskreutz, one of three college players on the Thunder roster, recently completed his freshman season at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Eastview, third in last week’s state Legion rankings, was 5-1 in the New Ulm tournament and defeated Apple Valley 14-4 in the championship game. The Gopher Classic, the nation’s largest American Legion baseball tournament, is a marathon for teams that make a run at the championship. Eastview played five games in three days during pool play, then four games in two days during the playoff phase of the tournament. Coon Rapids jumped to a 3-0 lead in the July 12 Gopher Classic championship game in Minnetonka. Matt Larson’s two-run single in the third inning made it 3-2, but the Thunder never could quite catch up. Evan Decovich drove in Eastview’s final three runs, one on a groundout and two with a home run in the seventh inning. Eastview dropped its season opener against Prior Lake, then won 22 of its next 23 games. The Thunder then lost four in a row but ended the streak with a 7-3 victory over Eagan in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. “We played a lot of good teams in New Ulm and at the Gopher Classic,” Klefsaas said. “Now that we have all of our players back, we’re looking forward to the playoffs.” The Third District has 35 teams stretching from Stillwater to Hutchinson and Forest Lake to Faribault. Sixteen of them advanced to the double-elimination district tournament.

The Lightning, needing to create salary cap space to re-sign some of its star players, did not tender Lundin a qualifying offer by the June 26 deadline, making him an unrestricted free agent. “I expected I would be back there,” Lundin said. “I enjoyed playing there. But the money didn’t work out.” He signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Wild. Lundin, who was Associated Press Minnesota Player of the Year in 2003, joined the Lightning in 2007-08 after four seasons at the University of Maine. He played 81 games with Tampa in his rookie season. The next two years he split time between Tampa and Norfolk of the American Hockey League. Lundin spent the entire 2010-11 season with the Lightning. He is one of at five AVHS graduates to play in the NHL. The others are Dan Sexton (currently with the Anaheim Ducks), Erik Westrum (who played 10 games with the Wild in 2005-06), Brad DeFauw and Karl Goehring. “Hopefully when I get back [to the Twin Cities], I’ll be able to sit down with the coach and GM,” Lundin said. He also has to familiarize himself with his new teammates. “We [referring to Tampa Bay] only played them once last year,” Lundin said. “So I don’t know if I have a good grasp of the team. What I remember is they got off to a rough start last season, then started playing well. They were a good team, and I think they believe they have the potential to be better this year.” A rookie would be under a lot of pressure playing for his hometown NHL team. Lundin said he also will feel pressure to perform, but being a veteran should be an advantage. “I think the experience helps,” he said. “You see so many different situations, and playing in your hometown is one more challenge. I know what it’s like to be a hockey player in this area.” Lundin isn’t the only former Apple Valley defenseman signed by the Wild in the off-season. Kyle Medvec, a 2006 AVHS graduate who played at the University of Vermont, took part in the team’s prospects camp at Xcel Energy Center. He was the Wild’s fourth-round draft choice in 2006. “My brother [Matt] played with Kyle for one year,” Lundin said. “Being from Apple Valley, you get to know other players from the community. Signing with the Wild is not only great for Kyle, but great for Apple Valley.”

Notebook: Eagan native wins ESPY Award BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Three years ago, M a l l o r y Weggemann lost the function in her legs. She has since become the top female Paralympic swimmer in the world, and last week earned a national award for her achievements. Weggemann Weggemann, an Eagan native, received an ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Award for Best Female Athlete with a Disability. The awards show was July 13 in Los Angeles and was televised live by ESPN. A former Eagan High School swimmer, Weggemann won eight gold medals and one silver at the 2010 International Paralympic Committee World Championships. She holds 33 national records and 15 world records. Weggemann, a University of Minnesota student, is training for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. She was paralyzed from the waist down in January 2008 after complications from an epidural injection to treat back pain. Weggemann was a college freshman at the time. Several months later, she attended the Paralympic Swimming Trials at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center and was inspired to resume swimming. By July 2009, she was breaking world records.

Hoffmann FROM PREVIOUS PAGE blank palette, but the colors we have to paint with are far more vivid than what we might have somewhere else.” Hoffmann changed one hole at White Bear Yacht Club from a short par-5 to a 457-yard par-4. One thing he said he won’t do is set up a course with 500-yard par-4s. In recent years, par-4s of that length have been introduced into U.S. Open setups. The 2011 U.S. Open finished on a 523-yard par-4. “I think that’s absurd,” said Hoffmann, who has worked for the MGA

Other Minnesotans have been prominent at ESPY Awards shows. Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Cup overall women’s Alpine skiing champion Lindsey Vonn, who was introduced to the sport at Buck Hill in Burnsville, won her second Best Female Athlete ESPY last week. Former Hopkins High School and University of Minnesota basketball player Blake Hoffarber won an ESPY for Best Play in 2005. On that play, which is now part of Minnesota basketball lore, Hoffarber grabbed a loose ball after being knocked to the floor and made a shot to send Hopkins to a second overtime against Eastview in the state high school Class 4A title game. Hopkins went on to win.

Senior Babe Ruth tourney Eastview was in the championship game of the Minnesota Senior Babe Ruth state baseball tournament as this edition went to press. The Thunder was to play Osseo-Maple Grove or the Minnetonka Mudhens in the championship game at Legion Field in Apple Valley on July 18. Rain delays pushed back the tournament schedule, causing a Monday finish. The state champion goes to the Midwest Plains Regional beginning Thursday, July 21, in Charleston, Mo. Eastview was 28-2 going into the state championship game and had outscored its first four state tournament opponents 44-16.

Brekke to Concordia Lakeville North pitcher/outfielder Tyler Brekke will play college baseball at Concordia University in St. Paul, it was announced last week. Brekke was 5-3 with five complete games as a pitcher last spring. He struck out 39 batters in 43 2/3 innings. At the plate, he had a .500 on-base percentage and scored 14 runs. He was All-South Suburban Conference in 2011 and All-Lake Conference in 2010. since 1997 and also directs its rules education programs. “There’s no reason you have to set up a golf course where you have a 523-yard par-4. “Look at Harbour Town [a PGA Tour stop in South Carolina]. What a great golf course that is, and it’s only about 6,700 yards.” The MGA operates 17 championships annually for men, women and juniors. The flagship event, the MGA Amateur, was first held in 1901. Over the next few years, it will go to some of Minnesota’s classic courses. “We’re blessed. We have a great group of member clubs,” Hoffmann said. “The key for us is to not overstay our welcome.”
