You don’t have to run away from home to see a circus close to home. Circus Juventas, North America’s largest youth circus school, will present its 17th annual summer show July 28 through Aug. 14 at its Big Top, 1270 Montreal Ave. in St. Paul. Circus Juventas students from Dakota County are part of the 72-student cast for this summer’s show “GRIMM – Happily Ever After!,” a production based on popular fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers such as Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and Little Red Riding Hood. Nick Dahlen of Eagan, 17, will have a prominent role in the production with acrobatic acts, tumbling, and executing flips on the Russian bar. Nick has been taking classes at the circus for six years, and has performed in multiple summer shows. When he was sixth grade, a friend told Nick to should check out the circus. Once he did, he’s been coming back ever since. “I just thought it looked really fun to be performing and it looked really interesting to me,” Nick said. “And how big the show was and the costumes and lights – just how big the production is.” Nick said he enjoys teaching summer classes and taking part in daily rehearsals, but the shows are what get his adrenaline pumping. “I like performing,” Nick said. “It’s the best part about being in [the] circus. It’s when you get to show everything you’ve rehearsed.” Nick and the students will perform the GRIMM production 20 times this summer. The aerial and acrobatic stunts might appear unsafe to the audience, but Nick reassures that the students and coaches know what they’re doing. CIRCUS: TO PAGE 9
