Archdiocese: women ordinations are not valid or recognized BY MATTHEW HANKEY SUN NEWSPAPERS One Burnsville woman took a leap of faith this past Sunday. Monique Venne was ordained June 26 as a priest at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Ave. in Minneapolis. This ceremony was the third public Roman Catholic Womanpriest ordination in the Twin Cities. Bishop Regina Nicolosi ordained Venne a priest. According to its website, the group is a movement within the Roman Catholic Church seeking to spiritually prepare, ordain, and support women who are theologically qualified, committed to an inclusive model of Church, and who are called to minister within the Roman Catholic Church. The RCWP contends its ordinations are valid because the women are ordained in the line of unbroken apostolic succession within the Roman Catholic Church. “Our first Roman Catholic Bishops in the womanpriest movement were ordained by a valid Roman Catholic male Bishop,” Venne said. The first ordination occurred in 2002, when seven women were ordained in the Danube River in Germany. Now, there are more than 100 women worldwide who have been ordained as deacons and priests. The Roman Catholic Church does not consider these ordinations valid. “It’s an absolute misnomer [for these women] to call themselves ‘Roman Catholic priest’,” said Dennis McGrath, communications manager for the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. “They choose to call it that, but she will not be a priest in the Roman Catholic Church.” It is the Church’s position that any woman who is ordained a deacon or priest and any Bishop who ordains them be excommunicated. be replaced before long. While plans for a long-term solution are being discussed, recent repairs have been made to extend the facility three more years. ABLE consists of two buildings: a four-story tower and a single-level training building. Fire crews can smoke both buildings, but are only allowed to set fires for “live burn” training in one room.
