Sometimes, the long arm of the law can stretch even longer with the help of two wheels, pedals and gears. In this case, two suspicious individuals spotted in a Lakeville neighborhood late on a recent June evening never heard the law coming. When bike-mounted Officers Mike Lamm and Shawn Fitzhenry discovered the youth, the pair were able to ride right up to them thanks to their bikes quiet operational noise levels. Both boys were cited for underage drinking. The benefits that come from having a police bike patrol should give criminals several more reasons to think twice about coming to Lakeville. The Lakeville Police Department’s bike patrol provides department members several advantages to patrolling in a traditional squad car. Having begun in 1998 with eight officers, the department now has nearly 40 officers, supervisors and police reserve officers who are ready to patrol areas that would otherwise not be possible, as well as practical. According to Lakeville Police Chief Tom Vonhof, who was a sergeant at the time the bike patrol began, said the varied uses of the bike patrol offer the department ways of getting around certain areas more easily. With bike racks affixed to Lakeville Police Department squad cars, officers are able to drive to specific areas of the city, park their cars, and patrol. “This has been very effective,” Vonhof said. Another reason the Lakeville Police Department has the bikes is for patrolling trails, parks, and areas where squad cars really can’t go, according to Vonhof. These patrols are especially effective during large community BIKE PATROL: TO PAGE 4

Sewer line blast displaces more than 100 people BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS For some Burnsville residents, the weekend July 8-10 literally started with a bang. Burnsville police and fire officials received a report at about 1:35 p.m. Friday, July 8, that three explosions occurred in the northeast part of the city in the Ridgewood Court and West River Hills Drive area. Burnsville Fire Marshal Lee LaTourelle said an underground sanitary sewer line erupted, sending three manhole covers airborne, with one going at least 10 feet in the air according to witness testimony, he said. The exact cause of the explosions is still unknown. “We’re still trying to pinpoint what the cause was,” said B.J. Jungmann, Fire Chief with the Burnsville Fire Department. Jungmann said that emergency workers tested the sewer lines and detected high amounts of carbon monoxide and flammable gasses. By that evening, the sewer system was lightly flushed for a couple hours, LaTourelle said. Public safety officials are still puzzled why the explosion happened.

“It’s tough to track down a cause when you’ve got nothing to go on except for the readings that evening,” Jungmann said. Residents told authorities on the scene that they smelled gasoline before and after the explosions, LaTourelle said. One possible cause is that a resident may have dumped bad gasoline down the sink, but that suspicion has not been confirmed. Between 100-150 residents of the River Hills Drive and Highway 13 East neighborhood were evacuated, though no injuries were reported, LaTourelle said. Damage was limited to a melted plastic tube near a laundry tub in one of the houses in the area, , LaTourelle said. The melt likely occurred because there was no water in her plumbing p-trap. Burnsville resident Donna Sauve did not hear the explosion from her home on Hayes Drive, but did wonder why Burnsville and Apple Valley fire trucks were parked around the corner at 3 p.m. that Friday afternoon. “I didn’t know about the explosion until someone came to my house at about six o’clock and that’s when they asked us to evacuate,” Sauve said.

A public safety official told Sauve she would have to leave her home for three to four hours and she spent the evening at her son’s residence in Eagan. Many residents were displaced to River Hills Methodist Church until 9:45 p.m., when it was determined it was safe for them to return home, LaTourelle said. Public safety officials provided a bus to transport residents to the church for those who preferred not to drive out of the area themselves. Residents returned home after the levels of carbon monoxide and flammable gas readings went down to zero, Jungmann said. Authorities gave residents informative pamphlets on how to proceed if they smelled gasoline in their homes. After receiving a call from a public safety official at 10:30 p.m., Sauve was told she could return home. She said the evacuation did not scare her but that she was slightly concerned about the possibility of gases entering her home. “I was somewhat [scared],” she said. “I stayed up a little while to make sure there was no gas smell.” Tests for carbon monoxide and other flammable gases have been conducted each morning since the explosions, Jungmann said.

“Whatever it was is not reappearing at this time and did not appear that night,” Jungmann said. The investigation is still ongoing and an official statement from the city will be released if and when the cause of the explosions is discovered, LaTourelle said. As for the explosion and evacuation, Sauve said she was surprised it happened near her home. “You never know when something like that can happen,” she said.

Detective Kelli Coughlin is among the 39 members of the Lakeville Police Department’s bike patrol, which is utilized in particular situations where squad cars are unable to traverse the terrain. The department also uses bike patrols for community events, such as Pan-O-Prog, making it easier for department personnel to weave through large crowds more efficiently. (Submitted photo)

Bike Patrol FROM PAGE 1 events, such as Pan-O-Prog, he said. “Officers can move through a crowd very quickly with a bicycle, and in areas we cannot get in with our squad cars,” he said, emphasizing that bikes are more effective than golf carts. “That works out very well.” During the 13 years of having a bike patrol, Vonhof said the bike patrol has shown its effectiveness in specific situations. “We have done all sorts of things on bikes over the years, ranging from making traffic stops to responding to domestic violence calls when we couldn’t get in with our squad cars,” the chief said. “It’s a really good tool.” Before an officer can begin patrolling on bike, however, he or she must complete specific training, which is tailored for police use and is different than regular mountain bike training. According to Vonhof, the training teaches officers how to ascend and descend stairways, jump curbs, and mount and dismount a bike while moving, in addition to the basics of handling a bicycle under uncommon circumstances.

“To have our officers cross-trained in this [area], even though we are primarily squad car driven, we have this capability to switch over to bikes when it’s appropriate,” Vonhof said. “They can’t go out on bike patrol until they have had the training.” One officer currently serving is officer Todd Williams, who has been with the department for six years, with six previous years spent serving as an officer with the Minneapolis Police Department. “I think it’s extremely beneficial,” Williams said, referring to summertime and property crime specifically. Williams actually did his training while with the Minneapolis Police Department, so his training carried over to Lakeville. Certification is through the International Police Mountain Bike Association, according to Williams, who commented on the techniques he learned. “There are certain ways of mounting and dismounting the bike, which were things that I didn’t really think about when I had the training,” he said. “Ascending and descending stairs on a mountain bike isn’t something I ever BIKE PATROL: TO NEXT PAGE

They are lightweight but very strong.” According to Vonhof, the Lakeville Police Department has a lot of success stories during the years the department has had the bikes. “Sometimes the low-tech solutions are the ones that work the best,” Vonhof said. “If you have a suspect who is fleeing from you, you have a tremendous amount of endurance and speed as opposed to on foot,” Williams said. He added that the bikes are especially useful in emergency situations. The Lakeville Police Department has 10 bikes that are rotated among the 25 patrol officers, seven supervisors, and seven police reserve officers.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Compromise is needed To the editor: As of Monday, July 11, I see that our state legislators, Sen. Dan Hall and Rep. Pam Myhra, are accepting their salaries despite the government shutdown. Nice way to lead! I understand that these Republican legislators are afraid to budge from their “Not A Penny More” stance, but they should take a lesson from American History. Throughout the history of our nation, great debates were solved through compromise. Take the Great Compromise of 1787, when delegates to the U.S. Constitutional

Convention could not agree on the number of representatives each state should have. It wasn’t until Roger Sherman of Connecticut proposed a “bicameral” or two-chambered Congress. We in Minnesota need our own Great Compromise. Throughout history, no one party ever succeeded in bullying to get everything its way. There is always give-and-take.I have seen Governor Dayton reduce his demand in efforts to meet the Republicans halfway. The Republicans will agree, but at a price – passing their social agenda. The pawns in the middle are those Minnesotans who work for the state, need state permits or services, or those who are least fortunate.

Correction In our July 7 issue, it was incorrectly reported in the story, “Burnsville: A Yellow Ribbon Community in the Making,” that the Apple Valley Beyond the Yellow Ribbon kick-off event will take place Sept. 29. The actual date of the event is Sept. 19. Also, Tom Hanson and Bruce Johnson’s photographs were inadvertently switched in our July 14 voter’s guide for the Burnsville Special Election. The correctly assigned photos are run below. The Sun-Current regrets the errors.

Candidate Tom Hanson

Candidate Bruce Johnson

Burnsville • Lakeville Why? Is it purely politics? So what are our legislators doing while we pay their salary? Are they truly working to compromise? Right now, given their lack of noticeable work toward a solution, I consider them “Non-Essential Employees!” Steve Manhart Burnsville

With schools, we get what we pay for To the editor: Republican legislators continue to hack away at our public schools. The $1.4 billion owed by the state to school districts will not be paid until 2014, if ever. Now they also propose to delay another $800 million in school payments, resulting in more hundreds of teacher lay-offs and program cuts. School districts will have to borrow and pay interest in order to keep operating, and voters will be hit up for more and bigger school bond issues. Arts, physical education, and vocational courses are being cut, and parents will have to pay hundreds of dollars for their children to participate in after school activities. Many children stay in school precisely so that they can participate in these activities, and many more are barred from participation because their parents can’t afford the fees. Our legislators proudly point to all this as “school reform.” In fact, our exemplary public schools are being gutted. Our children are being short-changed and our competitive position in the world permanently diminished. Only in the Republican mind does cutting a program to the bone create a bright and shining result. Most people know that we get what we pay for. It’s not too late for reasonable Republicans legislators to see that defending tax cuts for people who don’t need them doesn’t help our children or our State. William Graham Burnsville

Responding to Bruce Johnson July 7 letter To the editor: Regarding Bruce Johnson’s argument that one-time monies from the Federal Government should be included in Minnesota’s budget baseline: like any inheritance or gift from “an uncle,” onetime monies can only be spent once. If Mr. Johnson inherited $10,000 from a wealthy relative, would he raise his spending by $10,000 every year? Obviously, any windfall should not be considered as part of a budget baseline. The argument in this shutdown is very simple. The governor wants to raise taxes to increase the budget using the previous budgets plus the amount of the one-time federal monies as the baseline. The Republicans understand that those of us who are average, responsible citizens pay our bills and live within our means and if we have a rich uncle who leaves us some money, we spend it only once. Diana Bratley Lakeville

I support Coughlin To the editor: I recently had the opportunity to meet and discuss current city issues with Burnsville City Council candidate Bill Coughlin. Bill is running to fill the seat of our old friend, the late Charlie Crichton. Listening to Bill, I had a picture of Charlie leaning over and whispering in Bill’s ear. With a platform of fighting tax increases to promoting a positive business environment to supporting strong law enforcement to keep Burnsville safe, Bill is the only logical candidate in the tradition of Charlie Crichton. My family and I will be voting for Bill Coughlin in the July 26 special election and urge everyone to do the same. Charles Erickson Burnsville

BV student’s air rifle team takes third place at Junior Olympics BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Nick Skrogstad is shooting his way to the top. The Burnsville High School student’s air rifle team recently placed third at the Three Position Air Rifle Junior Olympics National Championships June 29 through July 1 at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio. Nick, 17, helped the American Legion Rifle Team in Richfield to finish in the top three for the Sporter division, edging out more than 50 other national rifle teams. The team has taken third place at the national competition two years in a row. “We were 18 points from taking second place,” Nick said of the 2011 championship. “We did really well for being a relatively young team. For being a young team, actually, we kicked butt.” Sporter division competitors use rifles that cost less than $500 and are required to wear street clothes. The Precision division requires shooters to use rifles that start at $1,500 and wear full-leather, canvas outfits. “I like to describe them as a function-

al straight jacket,” said Nick, who competed only in the Sporter division. Shooters fire at targets 10 meters away from three different positions: prone, standing, and kneeling using Daisy 887 rifles with .177 lead pellets at paper targets at the local and state competitions. At the Junior Olympics, however, shots are electronically registered and posted instantly. Before the tournament switched to the electronic scoring system a couple years ago, watching the competition proved challenging. “When he first started we had to watch it with binoculars,” said Nick’s mother, Peggy Skrogstad. Nick has been on the team for four years, and is joined by Connor Dupey from Bloomington, Cortney L’Heureux from Farmington and Elizabeth Ewert who lives in Burnsville, but attends high school in Lakeville. Elizabeth’s brother, Sam Ewert, is the team’s alternate. Nick also qualified for the 2011 championship for the individual competition, but didn’t place as high as he’d hoped. AIR RIFLE: TO NEXT PAGE

Air Rifle FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “His goal was to be in the top eight shooters this year,” Peggy Skrogstad said. “Had he shot his average at the competition that he shot at home, he would have placed in the top eight.” Nick has been ranked as high as the number two junior air rifle shooter in the state this year, after being the top shooter in 2010. He’s learned he can’t dwell on not reaching his individual goals if he’s going to help his team be successful, his mom said. “You may be disappointed in your own score, but you pull it together so everyone comes out a winner for them,” she said. The team advanced to the Junior Olympics after defeating the Mendota Heights-based St. Thomas Academy at the state competition this past March in Anoka. “It’s sort of a cool feeling beating a rifle team where shooting is part of their daily curriculum,” Nick said. “It was a fun moment when they announced the winners of the state match.” Nick has been shooting for more than a decade, “basically since I could walk,” often with his dad, Jeff Skrogstad. “I had him out shooting when he was four or five and I had him start shooting a .22,” Jeff Skrogstad said. “He loves the outdoors and he started out being a good shot.” It was his mom, though, that convinced him to compete on an air rifle team. Competing on an air rifle team is unique for a teenager. Nick is the only member from Burnsville High School’s

WINDOW & DOOR REPLACEMENT air rifle team. Connor, Cortney and Elizabeth round out that team, as well. Nick petitioned the school this past year to allow air rifling to be considered a letter sport like football or tennis. The school approved his petition and Nick received athletic letters for his sophomore and junior years. He will be a senior this fall and turn 18 years old this coming January. He is currently enrolled in a merit scholarship program at Dunwoody College of Technology and plans to attend full-time when he graduates high school in Spring 2012. He plans to get his associate’s degree in welding and machine fabrication and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. In addition to his air rifle accolades, Nick recently earned the distinction of becoming an Eagle Scout. With the help of friends and fellow Boy Scouts, he built an arbor, benches and landscaped an area at the Ebenezer Ridges Care Center. Overall, the project took more than two months and 400 total hours to complete. The arbor – like a gazebo – has a walkway, an arched roof and the sides have latticework up to the rail. The structure is painted white. “Every bit of it we built with wood that was donated or that we had laying around,” Nick said. “I think almost of the wood was donated from the community.” As far as air rifle competition, he has four more years to reach his goal. If he places in top eight places at the Junior Olympics, he and coach Tim Cagney will travel to Colorado Springs and work with rifle experts who will teach the best junior shooters in the country. “It’s kind of like a reward for doing so well,” Jeff Skrogstad said.

Zombie survival class coming to Lakeville library Aug. 5 BY HANNAH LUND • SUN NEWSPAPERS Ever wanted to know how to survive a zombie attack? Bud Hanzel and John Olson, authors of “The Do-it Yourself Guide to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse,” will visit to offer tips on surviving a zombie invasion 5 p.m. Thursday, July 28 at the Robert Trail Library in Rosemount and 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Heritage Library in Lakeville. Hanzel and Olson’s book covers survival tips ranging from the most favorable barricades to certain items a survivor must stock up on prior to when the “Zombie Transfer Agent” (ZTA) spreads. “We tend to be more practical and realistic with our planning,” said Bud Hanzel, co-author of the book. “We wanted to make this for the regular guy, not the one with military training. [These tips are] useful, even in non-zombie situations.” The book originated from various conversations he and Olson had after watching zombie movies. What began as a simple discussion of “Well, what would you do?” has now become a book that, according to the Dakota County Library system, is consistently checked out and requested. “We wanted to do something interesting that teens could find relevant,” said Robert Trail Program Coordinator Ron Hauser. “We’re hoping that this program will help kids use the recent interest in vampires, zombies and other supernatural beings to get interested in reading about them.” “What makes us different from other zombie survival manuals is that we try to follow the logic all the way to the end,” said John Olson. Zombie logic will likely be where Olson and Hanzel will begin their talk. They claim that, since movies are based solely on entertainment, there are many misconceptions surrounding zombies. To demystify such beliefs, participants can expect to learn basic “zombology,” or what makes the undead, well, undead.

Olson says that even the classic act of moaning for a zombie is illogical, being that it is a corpse incapable of breathing. Along with learning more about zombies, visitors can also expect to learn more about what it takes to survive, should they encounter a horde of zombies. For Hanzel, this all comes down to thinking ahead. “You usually don’t think about what you need until you actually need it, but you must be prepared,” Hanzel said. “You don’t want to wade through a horde of zombies because of toilet paper.” Stocking up is only one part of being prepared. Hanzel also strongly discourages picking fights with ZTA-laden corpses. “We’re not so much about fighting, but surviving,” Hanzel said. “Confrontations with zombies never help with that.” Hanzel and Olson will cover more material in their talk, and are more than happy to answer questions regarding zombies and survival. Though most visitors might not be anticipating a zombie confrontation, Robert Trail Library looks forward to a fun evening filled with questions, answers, and even a zombie movie afterward. The pair’s recent visit to Hastings proved that community members were indeed curious about their undead brethren. In a talk that went over 30 minutes, Olson and Hanzel were faced with a horde of questions, all of which they were pleased to answer. “We didn’t even need our PowerPoint presentation,” Olson said. “Once the questions started coming, they didn’t seem to stop, and we love that.” Questions about zombies have spread faster than the creatures themselves, with conventions in Seattle and a recent onslaught of zombie movies. Hanzel and Olson themselves will appear in a local independent film for “Crypticon,” a local horror convention. Local speaker to deliver message of hope at Grace Lutheran Depression Support Coalition event Aug. 5 BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS John Crudele’s life has been filled with obstacles, but the longtime motivational speaker continues his efforts to inspire others affected by depression, and their family members. Crudele will be presenting a live presentation titled “The Will to Live: A Testimony to the Human Spirit,” 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4, Grace Lutheran Church, 7800 West County Road 42, Apple Valley. The presentation is part of an educational speaker series sponsored by the Depression Support Coalition, whose mission is to inform, educate, support and cultivate a community of spiritual hope for those affected by depression. The Depression Support Coalition consists of nearly one dozen churches throughout the southern metropolitan area, including the cities of Burnsville, Apple Valley, Eagan, Savage, and Prior

Lake. The coalition’s oversight committee consists of representatives from each member church. Stacy Wollmuth, parish nurse at Easter Lutheran Church in Eagan explained how the DSC came into existence. Several years ago, many church representatives came together to talk about the disease of depression. Their goal was to find a means of erasing the stigma associated with mental illness, as well as provide support and hope for those affected by depression, she said. The coalition is attempting to spread words of support and hope via its website and by sharing information with churches in and out of the coalition, as well as clinics, hospitals, therapists’ offices, and mental health providers. According to Wollmuth, the coalition churches provide financial support, volunteer support, staff support, and more. “They are also providing people to help plan and implement the presentations,” Wollmuth said. “We do meet monthly and do all the planning.”

Richard Erickson, chairman of the DSC oversight committee, knows Crudele personally and spoke to his past. “I’ve known John for well over a year now. During his journey, he was very much in the dumps,” Erickson said. “He was very depressed.” Erickson offered his observations from this period of time, saying that Crudele was experiencing a loss of hope along with no knowledge of where to turn for help, prompting Erickson to say, “You wonder where the will to live is.” But hope was on the horizon, and Crudele began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. “In his reaching out to his friends and support groups, and his spiritual connections, he was finding morsels of hope,” Erickson said. “We know there are many, many more [people] out there who are suffering and don’t know where to get help. We know there are hundreds of thousands.” Crudele openly discussed his past and the reasons for which he feels compelled to continue speaking to audiences both

large and small. In fact, for over 25 years Crudele has delivered presentations to an estimated two million people and more than 4,500 audiences all over the world. When asked if “The Will to Live: A Testimony to the Human Spirit” was a presentation he’s delivered before, Crudele responded poignantly. “I would say it is a personal message that I’ve lived before,” he said. “I’m pretty open and authentic, and real and present, so my message will be very available and transparent. It will be a testimony to my journey through a deep depression.” Crudele continued to comment on his observations and realizations he gained through years of therapy, support from friends and speaking engagements. “What I discovered is that in the very fabric of who we are, even when we lose all conscious desires to live, there’s an essence, which is a will to live, that reveals itself. And I found myself intimately close to it.”

Apple Valley company says spectacles aid ADHD concentration BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Anyone who could benefit from improved concentration needn’t look any further than one Apple Valley company. My Focus Eyewear, 15601 Foliage Ave., announced July 1 it had developed My Focus Glasses, described as a unique, common sense tool to improve concentration while reading or studying. The company also indicated the glasses have proven useful in those dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. “It was just something that came to me,” said Ken Finochiaro, owner of My Focus Eyewear. “[The glasses] were originally just to improve reading in such places as study hall or work.” But after talking to people with ADHD, Finochiaro said that they indicated the glasses were helping them as well, which led to further studies. Finochiaro located a pair of young children’s parents who agreed to participate in a 30-day study. “The conclusion at the end was that the child did improve,” Finochiaro said. The 65-year-old Finochiaro, who has four patents to his name, explained that the glasses, though tested on children, were not for play, such as riding bikes. The design of the eyewear restricts one’s view.

“The peripheral vision is restricted. It’s only a narrow view you’re getting of the page,” Finochiaro said, “so [the glasses] compel you to focus on the page. By having better focus, you have better comprehension.” The company performed a pilot study on the effectiveness of the glasses that looked at brainwave activity and behaviors associated with attention, reading and cognitive performance while using the glasses. Testing methods included the use of an electroencephalogram, which measures electrical activity on the surface of the brain. Questionnaires, interviews and

observation were also used as testing tools. Participating in the study were seven children ranging from 7-14, each of whom had been previously diagnosed with ADHD. “The brain of a child with ADHD typically has a negative charge in the outer layers and a positive charge in the middle of the brain,” according to the company website. “This is associated with slower firing patterns, especially in the frontal part of the brain that is largely responsible for filtering distractions, impulse control, and engagement in key cognitive functions. …” The website features all of the testing information to substantiate the product’s effectiveness, derived from a separate study performed in 1990. “Again, when the children wore the glasses it increased a key-firing pattern for mental performance and concentration … on the surface of the brain by an average of 42 percent,” the website claims. Nicole Foesch of Cannon Falls, Minn., was a parent of a young boy who participated in the 30-day study. Her son, however, has never been diagnosed with ADHD. “My son struggles with reading,” Foesch said. “He struggles with focus in the classroom.

According to Foesch, family members suggested medications for her son, but Foesch was against that option and didn’t consider it. During the 30 days, Foesch maintained a daily jour nal reflecting her son’s improvement in concentration. “I saw more willingness to read at home as well as in the community. His confidence increased,” she said. “He really liked them. He commented on how they were able to help him focus. It was a big change.” Foesch added that her son only wore the glasses at home during the trial period, but after the 30 days, she noted that her son began wearing the glasses at school for reading. The Cannon Falls resident said she would recommend the glasses to anyone, saying they are worth trying. “I truly believe in the glasses. I think they are cost-effective,” Foesch said. “They look cool. They don’t look like special glasses. They look like regular sun glasses.” Finochiaro said it has been really nice seeing the benefits and further said that the goal is to have children suffering from concentration issues wear the glasses as they begin learning. Lundin brings more than 200 games of NHL experience to Minnesota Wild

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Shortly after becoming a professional hockey player, Mike Lundin decided to make Lakeville his off-season home. For at least the next year, it also will be his in-season home. Circumstances aligned at the beginning of the National Hockey League’s free agency period earlier this month, bringing the former Apple Valley High School star to the Minnesota Wild on a one-year contract. Lundin, 26, is a veteran of 224 NHL games, all with the Tampa Bay Lightning. “I grew up watching the North Stars, so of course the dream was to eventually play here,” Lundin said last week while on a family vacation in northern Minnesota. “I always thought the Wild would be a good fit for me since I spend the off-season here. So I did think there was a chance I could end up here.” The Wild was looking for experience on defense after trading Brent Burns to San Jose and releasing Cam Barker, who eventually signed with Edmonton. Lundin is being projected as a top-four defenseman in Minnesota. In 2010-11, Lundin had one goal and 12 assists in 69 regular-season games for Tampa Bay. He had two points and was a plus-4 in the playoffs for the Lightning, which reached the Eastern Conference finals before losing in seven games to eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston. He averaged more than 20 minutes a game in the regular season and almost 15 minutes during the playoffs. At 6-foot-2, 191 pounds, he is regarded as a solid defenseman who moves the puck well and is seldom caught out of position. LUNDIN: TO NEXT PAGE

those 19 games Eastview went 17-2, won a tournament in New Ulm and finished second in the 66-team Gopher Classic. After closing the regular season by splitting a doubleheader against Eagan on July 16, the Thunder was looking forward to a few days off. Eastview was scheduled to begin play in the Third District tournament on July 20. The Thunder is defending district champion. “We played really well in the Gopher

When Minnesota’s best amateur golfers played for a state championship this week, it was be Apple Valley resident Doug Hoffmann’s job to make sure everything went smoothly. Hoffmann, the Minnesota Golf Association tournament director, is in charge of the organization’s biggest event – the MGA Amateur Championship, which concluded July 20 at White Bear Yacht Club. Although he’s responsible for all aspects of the event from making pairings to arranging for marshals, “setting up the golf course is the most enjoyable part of the job,” he said. “What we want to do is provide an extremely challenging setup, but one that’s fun and fair.” This year’s MGA Amateur was a challenge for Hoffmann, too. The White Bear Yacht Club course, designed in the early 1900s by legendary architect Donald Ross, features rolling fairways, tricky greens and a few blind shots. But, at 6,471 yards from the back tees, it also might be considered short for players capable of 300-yard drives. It’s a stark contrast to last year’s MGA Amateur site, Dacotah Ridge in Morton, which can be stretched to more than 7,100 yards. Before the tournament started, Hoffmann expressed confidence that White Bear Yacht Club’s nuances would keep players from going ridiculously low. “The golf course gives us an awful lot,” he said. “In many respects, it’s a

Eastview rests up for upcoming American Legion playoff games Thunder goes 17-2 in grueling 19-game stretch BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS At one point this season Eastview’s American Legion baseball team won 22 of 23 games, so losing four in a row last week could have been disconcerting. But the Thunder players and coaches concluded that they were just tired. The Thunder went through a stretch where it played 19 games in 13 days. In

Classic, but we just got tired,” Thunder coach Bob Klefsaas said after the Eagan doubleheader. “We lost 7-5 [to Coon Rapids in the championship game], and we made two errors that cost us three runs. “Even today [against Eagan], we had no spark in the first game, but then we bounced back. That’s all part of Legion baseball.” Eastview took a 22-6 record into the district playoffs, which run through Saturday, July 23. Three teams will advance from the district playoffs to the state tournament beginning July 29 in Eden Prairie. In addition to catching a second wind just before the playoffs, the Thunder should benefit from the return of starting shortstop Cody Groskreutz, who missed the Gopher Classic while on a baseball trip to Europe. Groskreutz, one of three college players on the Thunder roster, recently completed his freshman season at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Eastview, third in last week’s state Legion rankings, was 5-1 in the New Ulm tournament and defeated Apple Valley 14-4 in the championship game. The Gopher Classic, the nation’s largest American Legion baseball tournament, is a marathon for teams that make a run at the championship. Eastview played five games in three days during pool play, then four games in two days during the playoff phase of the tournament. Coon Rapids jumped to a 3-0 lead in the July 12 Gopher Classic championship game in Minnetonka. Matt Larson’s tworun single in the third inning made it 3-2, but the Thunder never could quite catch up. Evan Decovich drove in Eastview’s final three runs, one on a groundout and two with a home run in the seventh inning. Eastview dropped its season opener against Prior Lake, then won 22 of its next 23 games. The Thunder then lost four in a row but ended the streak with a 7-3 victory over Eagan in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. “We played a lot of good teams in New Ulm and at the Gopher Classic,” Klefsaas said. “Now that we have all of our players back, we’re looking forward to the playoffs.” The Third District has 35 teams stretching from Stillwater to Hutchinson and Forest Lake to Faribault. Sixteen of them advanced to the double-elimination district tournament.

The Lightning, needing to create salary cap space to re-sign some of its star players, did not tender Lundin a qualifying offer by the June 26 deadline, making him an unrestricted free agent. “I expected I would be back there,” Lundin said. “I enjoyed playing there. But the money didn’t work out.” He signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Wild. Lundin, who was Associated Press Minnesota Player of the Year in 2003, joined the Lightning in 2007-08 after four seasons at the University of Maine. He played 81 games with Tampa in his rookie season. The next two years he split time between Tampa and Norfolk of the American Hockey League. Lundin spent the entire 2010-11 season with the Lightning. He is one of at five AVHS graduates to play in the NHL. The others are Dan Sexton (currently with the Anaheim Ducks), Erik Westrum (who played 10 games with the Wild in 2005-06), Brad DeFauw and Karl Goehring. “Hopefully when I get back [to the Twin Cities], I’ll be able to sit down with the coach and GM,” Lundin said. He also has to familiarize himself with his new teammates. “We [referring to Tampa Bay] only played them once last year,” Lundin said. “So I don’t know if I have a good grasp of the team. What I remember is they got off to a rough start last season, then started playing well. They were a good team, and I think they believe they have the potential to be better this year.” A rookie would be under a lot of pressure playing for his hometown NHL team. Lundin said he also will feel pressure to perform, but being a veteran should be an advantage. “I think the experience helps,” he said. “You see so many different situations, and playing in your hometown is one more challenge. I know what it’s like to be a hockey player in this area.” Lundin isn’t the only former Apple Valley defenseman signed by the Wild in the off-season. Kyle Medvec, a 2006 AVHS graduate who played at the University of Vermont, took part in the team’s prospects camp at Xcel Energy Center. He was the Wild’s fourth-round draft choice in 2006. “My brother [Matt] played with Kyle for one year,” Lundin said. “Being from Apple Valley, you get to know other players from the community. Signing with the Wild is not only great for Kyle, but great for Apple Valley.”

Notebook: Eagan native wins ESPY Award BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Three years ago, M a l l o r y Weggemann lost the function in her legs. She has since become the top female Paralympic swimmer in the world, and last week earned a national award for her achievements. Weggemann Weggemann, an Eagan native, received an ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) Award for Best Female Athlete with a Disability. The awards show was July 13 in Los Angeles and was televised live by ESPN. A former Eagan High School swimmer, Weggemann won eight gold medals and one silver at the 2010 International Paralympic Committee World Championships. She holds 33 national records and 15 world records. Weggemann, a University of Minnesota student, is training for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. She was paralyzed from the waist down in January 2008 after complications from an epidural injection to treat back pain. Weggemann was a college freshman at the time. Several months later, she attended the Paralympic Swimming Trials at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center and was inspired to resume swimming. By July 2009, she was breaking world records.

Hoffmann FROM PREVIOUS PAGE blank palette, but the colors we have to paint with are far more vivid than what we might have somewhere else.” Hoffmann changed one hole at White Bear Yacht Club from a short par-5 to a 457-yard par-4. One thing he said he won’t do is set up a course with 500-yard par-4s. In recent years, par-4s of that length have been introduced into U.S. Open setups. The 2011 U.S. Open finished on a 523-yard par-4. “I think that’s absurd,” said Hoffmann, who has worked for the MGA

25

Other Minnesotans have been prominent at ESPY Awards shows. Olympic gold medalist and three-time World Cup overall women’s Alpine skiing champion Lindsey Vonn, who was introduced to the sport at Buck Hill in Burnsville, won her second Best Female Athlete ESPY last week. Former Hopkins High School and University of Minnesota basketball player Blake Hoffarber won an ESPY for Best Play in 2005. On that play, which is now part of Minnesota basketball lore, Hoffarber grabbed a loose ball after being knocked to the floor and made a shot to send Hopkins to a second overtime against Eastview in the state high school Class 4A title game. Hopkins went on to win.

Senior Babe Ruth tourney Eastview was in the championship game of the Minnesota Senior Babe Ruth state baseball tournament as this edition went to press. The Thunder was to play Osseo-Maple Grove or the Minnetonka Mudhens in the championship game at Legion Field in Apple Valley on July 18. Rain delays pushed back the tournament schedule, causing a Monday finish. The state champion goes to the Midwest Plains Regional beginning Thursday, July 21, in Charleston, Mo. Eastview was 28-2 going into the state championship game and had outscored its first four state tournament opponents 44-16.

Brekke to Concordia Lakeville North pitcher/outfielder Tyler Brekke will play college baseball at Concordia University in St. Paul, it was announced last week. Brekke was 5-3 with five complete games as a pitcher last spring. He struck out 39 batters in 43 2/3 innings. At the plate, he had a .500 on-base percentage and scored 14 runs. He was All-South Suburban Conference in 2011 and All-Lake Conference in 2010. since 1997 and also directs its rules education programs. “There’s no reason you have to set up a golf course where you have a 523-yard par-4. “Look at Harbour Town [a PGA Tour stop in South Carolina]. What a great golf course that is, and it’s only about 6,700 yards.” The MGA operates 17 championships annually for men, women and juniors. The flagship event, the MGA Amateur, was first held in 1901. Over the next few years, it will go to some of Minnesota’s classic courses. “We’re blessed. We have a great group of member clubs,” Hoffmann said. “The key for us is to not overstay our welcome.”
