Welcome to the 2016 Crystal Frolics A message from the Crystal Frolics Committee: Welcome to the 2016 Crystal Frolics, a funfilled celebration with activities for everyone! The Crystal Frolics is planned & organized by the Crystal Frolics Committee, a nonprofit organization, which is comprised of volunteers from Crystal civic groups, service organizations, local businesses and residents. These organizations include the West Metro Fire Relief Association & Auxiliary, the local VFW Post 494, Crystal Lion’s Club, Boy Scout Troop 533, Cooper Football, Crystal Park & Recreation Advisory Commission, and the City of Crystal. The Firefighters Waterball Tournament is back after being missed from the Frolics line-up for decades. Watch the West Metro firefighters battle with firefighters from other departments to advance the ball into their opponent’s territory with fire hoses. The tournament begins at 1:00pm on Saturday, July 30 at Becker Park. This year’s button was designed by Grace Knowles, who won a $200 gift card donated by the Arm-

strong Cooper Youth Hockey Association. The 2nd and 3rd place design winners are twins, Sheridan & Summer Smith. Both won gift cards donated by the Crystal Police Association. All three received 10 buttons of their own design. We ask for your support by purchasing $2 Crystal Frolics buttons, which help pay for the quality entertainment and events you enjoy every year. Register your button at our website to win prizes donated by local businesses. You also need a registered button to participate in the Search for the Crystal Ball and to claim the prize, $500 in gift cards from local businesses, provided by Associated Bank. Love to sing? Buy a button and sing in our Karaoke tent Friday and Saturday evenings. In conjunction with the City of Crystal, we are doing all we can to keep the Frolics a safe and enjoyable family-friendly community event. Evenings at the carnival are family nights. No one under the age of 18 will be allowed into the carnival without a parent or guardian afWELCOME - TO PAGE 12

More, bigger and wetter fun at this year’s Frolics BY JOE BOWEN SUN POST NEWSPAPERS What’s new at this year’s Crystal Frolics? The biggest addition, by far, is a “water ball tournament between several West Metro fire departments. The game is something like a training exercise: two three-person teams of firefighters line up at opposite ends of a wire suspended about 10 feet in the air, facing one another, and use a fire hose to blast a metal ball towards the opposing team. Whoever uses the jet of water to push the swinging, swaying ball closer to the other team after two minutes –

or pushes it past a point over their opponents’ heads before then – wins. Frolics and West Metro Fire-Rescue District organizers said the game was a staple of the annual summer festival decades ago, but gradually faded away. Assistant Chief Tim Herlofsky said a watering ban in the 80s prompted Frolics organizers then to hold off on the competition, and it never got restarted. This year’s festival, then, is set to be the first to feature the light-hearted competition in nearly three decades, and Herlofsky said teams from Kids were invited to try their hand at “water ball during the Crystal Airport Open House and Fly-In earlier this summer. Frolics food and beer The Crystal Frolics features a plethora of food and beer options, proceeds from which go to support local service organizations who in turn support the city’s annual festival. “Without the support of these organizations, the Frolics would not be able to happen each year, since we operate through donations, wrote Frolics President Lynn Haney. “This financial support funds the softball tournament, fireworks, music, Family Festival and other activities. Organizers ask that attendees help support the annual summer festival by purchasing food and beverages from the civic organizations who set up booths in Becker and Welcome parks. Beer and wine coolers are not al-

lowed in the parks, but can be purchased from the West Metro Relief Assocation Tent in Becker Park and the Crystal Lions in Welcome Park. Alcoholic beverages in general must be purchased on site, and event security will check attendees’ coolers because it is unlawful to bring alcoholic beverages into city parks. Here is a breakdown of which organization is selling what and where:

Becker Park • West Metro Fire Relief Association: Budweiser; Michelob Golden Light; Goose Island IPA; Stella Artois; Lime-a-Rita, Raza-Rita, and WatermelonRita; Copa Di Vino wines. • VFW Post 494: Pork chops on a stick, ham-

A frolicking 5k run and walk Organizers say the Crystal Frolics 5k has a small town feel, even in a city that boasts more than 20,000 residents. The annual “run/ walk” and kids’ halfmile “fun run” typically see about 100 runners and walkers. The course - which stays inside Bassett Creek Park - is the same fast, flat course as last year. Timing will be automatic and bib chips will be used to ensure timing accuracy. Post-race refreshments will be provided by Almsted’s Fresh Market, per usual. Every 5k entrant will receive a microfiber Tshirt and awards will be

handed out for top two male and female finishers in the following age groups: under 20; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 and older. The fun run is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, at Bassett Creek Park, 6001 32nd Ave. N., Crystal. The 5k run and walk is scheduled for 8 a.m. at the same spot. The entry fee for the 5k is $20, and race-day registration will be available for $25. The kids’ run is free, but participants do not receive a tee. The events are sponsored by the following: • Northwest Family

Physicians • Almsted’s Fresh Market; • Healthsource Chiropractic • Crystal Business Association • Mayor Jim Adams • Back in Shape Chiropractic - Dr. Dianne Como • Milton’s Vittles, Vino, Beer • Crystal Fund for Community Progress • Blind Installation & Repair • Cinema Grill • Greenlayer • Armstrong High School Cross Country • The Crystal Park & Recreation Advisory Commission

Welcome FROM PAGE 2 ter 4 p.m. There will be a $3 per person entrance fee for the carnival after 6 p.m. that includes a free ride ticket. Children 2 and under get in free. Purchasing food and beverages from our Civic Organization food booths (located at Becker and Welcome Park) raises money to support the Crystal Frolics and other community needs. The Frolics would not be possible without the support of these organizations, as we are funded solely through donations which pay for the softball tournament, fireworks, music and other events. We thank

them and the many area businesses (listed on the front page) for their support. During this very exciting campaign year, we welcome candidates and their campaign volunteers to the Frolics. Please do not hand out literature, stickers or any campaign items, to keep park cleanup at a minimum. For clarification on candidate guidelines, please contact us at crystalfrolics@gmail. com. Please visit our website: www.crystalfrolics. org for more information and “Like us on Facebook. Thank you for supporting the Crystal Frolics and keeping it one of the best celebrations in Minnesota. Have a safe and fun-

filled weekend! Happy Frolicking! New FROM PAGE 4 Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Center, Golden Valley, and Plymouth have been invited. West Metro, which is a combined fire department shared by New Hope and Crystal will, of course, also enter teams of its own. The tournament is scheduled 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Becker Park, 6225 56th Ave. N., Crystal. Beyond water ball, not much will be new, organizers said, but traditional events at the city’s annual summer festival are expected to get bigger and better. The “family festival on Sunday, July 31 will “everything it was last

year plus more, said Frolics President Lynn Haney. The festivalwithin-the-festival will include an “outreach van from the Three Rivers Park District with activities designed to help kids learn about nature and their environment. The festival’s softball tournament will feature an all-star game and home run derby, and will include a contest to see who can hit a bullseye with a batted softball for a $300 prize. The Frolics’ annual 5k run and walk and kids’ fun run is back, too, as are senior card tournaments in the weeks leading up to the festival, a “baggo tournament on Saturday afternoon, the Mayor’s Dunk Tank
