Adventures for a Lifetime

Family is at the center of everything that ha ppens in the Richfield home where Sheri and Doug Nelson ha ve lived for the last 26 years. Throughout their 41-y ear marriage, the Nelsons, parents of three children and gr andparents to f our, have maintained close ties with their families of origin, and no w, their o wn pr ogeny. At the moment, thr ee female r elatives who ar e in tr ansition ar e tempor arily boarding at the Nelsons, each moving in with a pet, as well. All three of them work– one also is in college– and each has her own car, so the driveway is full. In addition to the Nelsons and their dog, Taylor, their five-bedroom home is tempor arily occupied b y daughter Sar ah, gr anddaughter K ayla, and Sheri’s sister Roberta. Each has a pet: Sarah has Sammy the cat, Kayla has a dog named Melody, and Rebecca’s dog is Cocoa. Sheri and Doug ar e both still w orking: Sheri is a T win Cities pr operty manager and Doug is a maintenance technician. “Doug is the best guy in the entir e world, Sheri said. “He is a saint, in my opinion. He’ s v ery helpful. He’ s lik e the calm, and I’m lik e the stor m. He’s always solving things. The Nelsons ha ve had “people in and out of our house for a long time, according to Sheri. “My mom and dad lived with us for a year, then my oldest brother and his wife, then my sister and her two kids,

Doug said. “So I put up another wall, and the basement became a two-bedroom apartment.â€? Organization is the k ey to k eeping things running smoothly within an extended family that includes thr ee generations. “It’s not hard if you get organized,â€? Sheri said. “There’s a place for everything. Keeping lists is important. You make charts. We keep a list on the refrigerator of the gr oceries w e need. They all help with the house work. Everybody keeps up their o wn room. If someone gets in to a bind f or some reason, someone else will pitch in and help out, b ut being in a bind can ’t be a habit. The same goes for cleaning of their assigned room. “Everyone does their o wn laundry on their assigned da y. I tak e car e of doing the general towel supply for the bathroom upstairs , b ut ba thing and showering to wels ar e up to the individual; they each ha ve their o wn bath sheet/towels.â€? Sheri grocery shops once a week and keeps the famil y’s tw o fr eezers full. “I might go to Sam’ s Club and b uy a whole boa tload of chick en or beef ,â€? she said. “If they want something other than what I get, they ha ve to b uy it themselves,â€? Sheri said. “They’ re on their own for snacks.â€? If w ork schedules conflict with
