The Edina School District took a step toward potentially deep budget cuts for the 2011-2012 school year Monday, April 11. To meet a state deadline for lay-off notices, the Edina School Board voted preliminarily to eliminate the elementary Spanish program and increase class sizes at the middle- and high-school levels. The items are among $3 million in cuts identified by district officials to meet a projected funding shortfall of up to $9 million over the next three years. The decisions will be finalized in coming months. “Nobody feels good about the fact that we need to make adjustments in our programs, or that we’re reducing options for students or that we’re impacting staff,” Supt. Ric Dressen said. “All of these reductions are hard and

Edina city manager unveils ‘Big Ideas’

When Edina hired Scott Neal last fall, it got a city manager that could moonlight as a late night host. Neal recently delivered his own top 10 list from behind the dais in Council Chambers. The 12-minute monologue includes 10 proposals to improve and enhance city government. The “Big Ideas Tour: Action Plan” video has Scott Neal reached more than 500 views since being uploaded mid-March to Edina Channel 16’s YouTube account. It is also available on the city’s website, cityofedina.com.
