Edina growing in size, diversity

Edina Hall of Fame inducts Apple exec, four others

More detailed census data expected next month BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Recently released census numbers show Edina has grown slightly over the last decade and become more racially diverse. The 2010 redistricting files released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau include population and housing unit totals as well as racial make-up of the city. More detailed data will be released in coming months. Since the last census in 2000, Edina’s population has grown 1.1 percent, or 516 people, to 47,941. “Our population over the years has been fairly static,” said Joyce Repya, associate planner for the city of Edina. Between 1980 and 1990, the city lost three people, she said. From 1990 to 2000, Edina gained 1,355 residents. The city uses census data to plan city services and programming. It also provides the information to developers and community agencies. “We do find interesting the number of vacant versus occupied units,” Repya said. Between 2000 and 2010, the number of housing units in Edina grew, but so did the rate of vacancy. The city gained 391 units for a total 22,560 in 2010. Of those units, 1,888 or 8.4 percent are vacant. In 2000, the city had 21,669 housing units, only 3.1 percent or 673 of which were vacant.

2011 Edina High School Hall of Fame induction honors alumni, staff from varied fields BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS What do an Apple executive, a nuclear physicist and a Latin teacher have in common? They were recently inducted in the Edina High School Hall of Fame. The Edina Education Fund, in partnership with Edina Public schools, recognized its 2011 inductees Thursday evening, April 14, at Interlachen Country Club. Karen Nelson, executive director of the Edina Education Fund, said they were selected by an alumni committee and join another 41 alumni and 15 staff members in the Hall of Fame displayed at Edina High School.
