Flooding outlook improves in Edina
Holy Yoga new way to worship Christ-based yoga classes crop up at Twin Cities churches
Creeks staying within banks
BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A handful of Twin Cities churches are combining worship with a workout. Holy Yoga classes are offered weekly at 11 metro locations, including Edina, Excelsior, Robbinsdale and Waconia. Holy Yoga uses the same poses as traditional yoga, but incorporates Bible verses, prayer and Christian music, said Jonnie Goodmanson, lead instructor trainer for the practice. “In traditional yoga it’s about looking into yourself and transcending knowledge, and that’s where we differ,” said Goodmanson. Each class begins with scripture. Music played during the session often mirrors its message, like grace or forgiveness. Terms like chakra – the name given to seven areas of energy in the body recognized in traditional yoga – are explained as man’s attempt to articulate God’s creation. “Our emphasis is on spirituality,” said Goodmanson, who leads classes at St. Stephen’s Church in Edina, Elim Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale and Trinity Lutheran
BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina property owners may escape flooding. As of Monday, April 4, the outlook in the city had improved, said Edina Utility Engineer Jesse Struve, who is leading flood response efforts. In mid-March, based on hydrologic models from the Minnehaha and Nine Mile Creek watershed districts, the city identified approximately 100 properties at-risk for flooding. City crews began work to fill 26,000 sandbags to protect structures on those properties. “We hit one of the better scenarios projected based on the modeling we saw,” said Struve. “It was a slower snow melt due to cold temperatures and we didn’t get some of the additional rain they were calling for.” He said a minor rain event over the weekend also did not have lasting effects.

Edina Animal Control: Do not leave small pets outside unattended BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The City of Edina is advising residents to keep an eye on their small pets after a recent coyote attack – likely the first in the city. Resident Linda Davis said she let Ruby, the family’s miniature dachshund, into their fenced backyard near Pamela Park just before 10 a.m. Thursday, March 31. She went into the bathroom to brush her teeth and when she turned the water off just minutes later, she heard Ruby yelping. “It happened so fast,” said Davis. “She wasn’t out there for three minutes. People just have to be really careful.” Davis said as soon as she ran into the yard, the coyote let go of Ruby and jumped over the back fence “like it was nothing.” The dog suffered six puncture wounds.
She was placed on antibiotics and pain medication, but will be OK, said Davis. “We’re lucky,” she said. According to media reports, another small dog died after a Feb. 17 attack in a St. Louis Park backyard. Edina Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter said residents should not leave small pets outside or unsupervised for long periods of time. Hunter said coyotes are naturally present year-round in the city and are most active at dawn and dusk. While the city doesn’t track coyote sightings, he estimated there to be about a dozen active in the Edina. Coyote sightings have also been reported in several other suburban areas. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, populations are establishing and increasing in the Twin Cities metro area. Recently there have been regular sightings in the Pamela Park and Melody Lake areas in Edina. Last fall, the city alerted residents about a family of coyCOYOTE ATTACK: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE otes living near Merilane in north Edina. In his seven years with the city, however, Hunter said this was the first report he heard of a coyote attacking a pet. “It’s not a common event by any stretch, but if you’ve got small pets, don’t put them out unsupervised,” said Hunter. Coyotes are opportunistic hunters, he said, and the one that attacked Ruby saw “something small and short legged – a bite-sized morsel – that probably looked like a good idea at the time.” Coyotes avoid people. There have been no reported attacks on people in the state. He said the easiest way for people to protect their small pets is to supervise them when outside. Coyotes are easily capable of jumping 5-foot fences, he said. Davis said this winter, a neighbor also reported seeing a coyote, but she didn’t know of any other sightings in her heavily trafficked area just off France Avenue. It hadn’t been a concern before, but following the attack, she will no longer let Ruby out alone. “Because we had a fenced yard she’s been able to play around and chase the chipmunks and squirrels pretty freely but she won’t be able to now,” said Davis. “You have to be really careful.”
Coyote dos & don’ts The Minnesota Department offers the following tips for residents concerned about the presence of coyotes in their neighborhood. Do: • Secure all garbage containers, wildlife feeders and other food sources to prevent coyote access. • Confine small dogs and cats in kennels, or supervise them when outside. • Vaccinate all pets for rabies, distemper, parvo and other diseases, as recommended by a veterinarian. • Consider installing coyote-proof fencing. • Chase or shout at any coyotes that does not immediately run from people. Don’t: • Feed coyotes. • Leave pet food outside. • Allow cats and small dogs outside unattended. Info: dnr.state.mn.us.

Between Senate approval of bills with cuts to higher education and health and human services spending, Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, R-Buffalo, addressed local business leaders. Koch spoke on her party’s efforts to close the budget deficit without raising taxes and other business-friendly measures at a joint meeting of the Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina and Richfield chambers of commerce Wednesday, March 30. Chamber members said so far they are pleased with direction of the current legislative session, now past the halfway point. “There’s plenty going on at the state that impacts all of us,” said Pat MulQueeny, Eden Prairie Chamber president, following the luncheon at the Edina Country Club. “Overall it’s been an aggressive approach trying to get things done early.” Koch said the current focus at the capital is balancing the state budget. This year, the Senate set its earliest budget target in history asking for budget bills to be through committee by March 25.
Those bills, and their House companions, are now getting votes on the respective floors, something Koch said doesn’t usually until late April or May. That allows extra time for discussion as details are hammered out in conference committees before the bills are sent to Democratic-Farmer-Labor Gov. Mark Dayton’s desk, she said. The GOP-proposed budget does not increase taxes. Koch said the budget should fit within the state’s projected revenue of about $34 billion – the same amount spent last biennium. Dayton’s proposed budget increases spending to about $37.4 billion. “We believe it’s important for the government to live within its means,” said Koch, adding the projected $5 billion budget deficit is due to an assumed increase in spending. She said one of the fastest growing areas of spending – and most likely for reform – is health and human services. The budget bill approved by the Senate Wednesday afternoon would ban state spending to enact the federal health care overhaul unless the U.S. Supreme Court upholds the law. Koch told chamber members that if any state can handle its own health care it’s Minnesota, home to Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and other renowned institutions. CHAMBERS: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Let us keep our money. Let us spend it as we see fit, said Koch. Koch also spoke on her three overarching priorities for the session: creating a business-friendly climate to boost job creation, making the government live within its means, and making it more efficient and cost effective. “The best remedy for a bad state budget is a thriving economy, she said. She gave an overview of related measures already taken this session, among them bills signed by the governor allowing alternative licensing for teachers and streamlining the environmental permitting process. “They are trying to be very pro-business, which we haven’t heard in a long time, said Arrie Larsen Manti, Edina Chamber president. According to Tony Kwilas, director of environmental policy at the Minnesota Chamber, the chamber had been working for three years to see efficiencies brought to the permitting process. “When you do a comparison, sometimes unfortunately we take a little bit longer than other states, Kwilas said. “This year through the leadership of the Legislature as well as the governor we put some pretty substantial changes
in place to help move the process along. In addition, Koch said streamlined House and Senate committees are also making the legislation process better for business. GOP leadership reduced the number of House committees from 36 to 24, and Senate committees from 25 to 16, at the beginning of the session. “Business people do not have the time to go over to the capital and sit in committee hearings through the course of the week, said Maureen Scallen Failor, Bloomington Chamber executive director. “The process has definitely been improved. They’ve made it more efficient and more effective. As the state’s first female majority leader, and the first Republican to hold the post in 38 years, Koch also spoke about the historic wave of Republican support last election. She said of the 60 freshman legislators in the House and Senate, 54 are Republicans. Richfield Chamber President Steven Lindgren said the high number of freshman in the majority means fresh ears willing to listen to suggestions and concerns from the private sector. “There’s a new and exciting focus on how free enterprise can flourish in this state that hasn’t been quite as evident in years past, Lindgren said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Address area’s homelessness
Thanks for taking Grandview District stand on genocide planning kicks off
To the editor: During this long, cold winter we endured, I went to bed many snowy evenings thinking about the 1,000 or so individuals in our state that were turned away each night in our state’s homeless shelters. Knowing that roughly half that number was children and youth was even more heartbreaking. Homelessness is not just an urban problem. We have people in our southern suburban communities in need of housing. In 2010 alone, more than 100 youth in Edina, Richfield and Bloomington were precariously housed and sought supportive services. We as Minnesotans can do better. Not only is it the moral thing to help find housing for our community’s most vulnerable members, it is the smart thing to do. It is roughly five times more costly for our county when a family stays in a shelter over a year’s time versus when it provides services to help that family get into more permanent housing. Unfortunately, our current state budget proposal could jeopardize many of these supportive services. If you are concerned about how potential cuts would affect not only those without homes, but also affect the vitality of our whole city, please consider attending “Homelessness in our Community (Edina and Bloomington)” 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at Colonial Church of Edina. We all benefit when our neighbors are able to lead more stable and healthy lives. Danielle Niska Edina
To the editor: Sen. Geoff Michel (R-Edina) and Sen. Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul) recently introduced legislation to increase genocide awareness and prevention in Minnesota. Their bipartisan bill will commemorate April of every year as Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month. In the 20th century alone, nearly 200 million people perished in genocides and other mass atrocities. Refugees from the Holocaust and genocides in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur live in Minnesota, as do refugees from other brutal conflicts that have targeted innocent civilians. Minnesota legislators have taken a strong stand against genocide, unanimously passing a bill in 2007 to divest state public pension funds from companies complicit in funding the Darfur genocide. Edina passed a similar bill in 2008 and Edina became the third city in the nation, following Chicago and San Francisco, to pass an antigenocide resolution. A companion bill was also recently introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives. We hope that Reps. Keith Downey (R-Edina) and Pat Mazarol (RBloomington) will support our district in these important human rights efforts. Ellen J. Kennedy Edina Kennedy is executive director of World Without Genocide at the William Mitchell College of Law. LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

If you’re like me, the Grandview District of Edina is a part of every day of your life. As a Highlands neighborhood resident, I use the district to access a whole range of goods and services – from groceries to gasoline, coffee to car repair, bakery goods to banking, pizza to package delivery, haircuts to hardware, the drug store to the dry cleaners. It is the commercial center for my neighborhood and much of our community. It is also the civic center of our community. City Hall and the police station lie at one end of the district, the library and senior center at the other. The buses that transport Edina’s kids to and from school emerge each morning from the school bus garage. One of Edina’s liquor stores and a parking ramp nobody seems to know about are located in the district on city property. All told, over a third of the land in the district is publicly owned. Last year, the city’s Public Works facility – which had occupied 3.3 acres at the corner of Eden and Arcadia in the district – was vacated when a new facility was completed in the southwest part of the city. The City Council, recognizing the opportunity created by the change, initiated a process to guide future redevelopment of the old public works site and the entire district. The initial phase of the process featured extraordinary public participation. It was led by a Community Advisory Team that included representatives from city boards and commissions, the school district, business and property owners in the district, and interested

residents of our community. Half of the 18 members of the team were appointed by residents who attended the meeting kicking off the process. Ten Edina residents who work as design professionals also volunteered their time to assist the Community Advisory Team and together, these 28 people met 10 times in 20 days last April and May to develop a vision for the future of the Grandview District. That vision is summarized in seven Guiding Principles that are part of a report approved by the Edina City Council late last year. A copy of the report is available on the city’s website, cityofedina.com. Now it’s time to begin work on turning those principles into a Small Area Plan that will provide a development framework for the district. Although we are fortunate (thanks to a Metropolitan Council grant) to be able to engage expert professional assistance as we pursue this second phase of the planning process, we intend for the process to continue to be led by community stakeholders. To that end, we’re looking for additional community members – residents, property owners and business owners – to engage in the planning process. If you’ve been looking for a way to participate in shaping the future of our community, this is your chance. Please join us 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., as we continue planning the future of Edina’s Grandview District.

Hi, I’m Dan and I’d like to hear from you BY DANIEL CALLAHAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS A little over a month ago, I made a decision some of you might fault me for: I moved from a land of sunshine, palm trees and near perpetual summer to return to Minnesota. In March. Winter. I know, I know, what was I thinking? But, after nearly three years of kicking ‘round the Arizona desert, I decided it was time for a homecoming. I came back for a number of reasons, not the least of which was to take the opportunity to work with DANIEL the Sun Current CALLAHAN staff to proSun-Current Central vide your Managing Editor communities with the information you want, need and have come to expect from our publications. Or maybe it was those 120-degree days in the summer that make your skin feel like it’s melting. Either one, I guess. Minnesota is where I’m from, through and through, a fact I have been reminded of on numerous occasions since I left. From colleagues making mention of my decidedly moderate bent in opinion writing to sources, customers and friends taking pains to point out the extended vowels that make a Minnesoooota accent so obvious, reminders of where I came from were a daily occurrence. None of us exist in a vacuum, no one is exempt from the influences of the people and places that we’ve grown up with. As much as I am a reflection of the Midwest culture I grew up in — something people in Arizona would not let me forget — this newspaper reflects your community and if there’s important something we’re missing, we want to know as soon as possible. So, I want to hear from you. An editor I once worked for was fond of reminding the grunts in the newsroom the only way we’d know how a story was received was how many people called the paper. When you love a story, let us know. When something really gets you riled up, write us a letter. If you couldn’t care less either way, I still want to know about it. So give me a call at 763-424-7352, leave a comment on our website, shoot me an email to dcallahan@acnpapers.com or, heck, if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by the office to chat. I’d love to hear from you.

Use sidewalks for safety To the editor: Edina has 25 miles of sidewalks. Yet, on any given day, from pre-dawn until after nightfall, joggers and walkers use the streets for their exercise. Often in groups or accompanied by dogs or young children in strollers, they create a hazard for themselves and drivers. There really are two problems with this street activity. First, it’s against the law. Where there are sidewalks that are “accessible and usable,” runners and walkers must use those sidewalks, not the roadway (Minnesota Statutes, Sec. 169.21, Subd. 5). Doing otherwise is a petty misdemeanor. But just as important, even if joggers and walkers play it safe and try to do the right things on the road, such as traveling on the “wrong side of the road” toward oncoming traffic, wearing reflective or other bright clothing and obeying traffic signs, the street is still not a safe place to be. This is especially the case with today’s distracted drivers, who are often multitasking and not watching the roadway. Street joggers and walkers also create
unnecessary risks for drivers, often by forcing them to travel in the oncoming lane of traffic in order to go safely around them. The U.S. Department of Transportation does not identify street joggers and walkers in its pedestrian injury and fatality statistics, but undoubtedly they account for some of the 4,091 pedestrians – about 11 every day – who died in 2009. So, joggers and walkers, please use the sidewalks whenever they are passable, for everyone’s safety. Ross Plaetzer Edina
Keep creeks clean To the editor: Nine Mile Creek, at first glance, is just a little creek, but plunge under the waves and you will be introduced to a new side of this little creek. It is the home of Minnesota’s state turtle and many other endangered species, and it’s weird how there’s no ocean in sight yet the creek is considered salt water. At a local creek cleanup, there were some interesting treasures pulled out of the lovely little creek including plenty of garbage, a Chinese candy wrapper and a $5 bill. Now how can all these problems

go down the drain? Well, it’s simple. It starts with a simple storm drain. By clearing all the garbage, leaves and debris away from the storm drain, it will reduce the amount of foreign substances entering the creek. This in turn will make properties on the creek more desirable, create a safe habitat for native animals and just make a more pleasant environment. Winter tennis, anyone? To the editor: Anybody ready for tennis yet? If you drive by our tennis courts you will notice the nets are still up. I finally found out why after asking City Hall. The Parks Department decided to leave them up, with the support of the former city manager, for a trial winter because some tennis players wanted to play longer. So after sitting in three feet of snow all winter don’t wonder why they might have to replace them. After all, it’s only the taxpayers’ money! Wayne Dvorak Edina

Local librarian finds special meaning in Nat’l Library Week ‘Create Your Own Story’ theme has new meaning BY PHUOC THI MINH TRAN • GUEST COLUMNIST Do you know that the snail was the fastest animal in the world long ago? Or how an elderly loving couple in Japan survived winter with little food but big heart? As a librarian and a respected storyteller, I bring alive my favorite stories and tales from around the world at many cultural events for children and families. Today I love to introduce the 398.2 Section in public libraries, where folktales, fairy tales, fables and legends are located. The unique folktales collection is the one I hold most near and dear to my heart. My parents taught me how to live a virtuous life and do good deeds through oral stories. My grandparents used traditional folktales to teach moral lessons and to pass down values to the younger generation. Today I tell stories and Vietnamese folktales to engage my children to learn about Vietnam, its people, and culture through five virtues: nhan (compas-

a language and culture gap is widening between the elders and the younger generations. The rich folktale collection at the library can foster bonding and improve communication between generations, and be a vehicle to bridge the gap between various countries. Instead, growing up, I would fall asleep to the story of a girl who would ride around on a giant turtle named Mimi and do good deeds.” Telling stories is a treasure shared. I
feel so blessed to have the chance to tell stories each night to my children. I feel so lucky to have access to the beautiful collection of folktales from around the world at Hennepin County libraries. Many immigrant families have rooted their lives in America and around the world. While the first generation has strong connections with their heritage,

House bill threatens future of Perpich Center for the Arts in GV BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley, a tuition-free statewide public residential arts high school for juniors and seniors, could be dissolved or forced to become a charter school under HF1078, a bill introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Rep. Pat Garofalo of Farmington, R36B, chair of the House Education
Finance Committee, is sponsoring the bill. There is no companion bill in the Senate. The school, a state agency at 6125 Olson Highway in Golden Valley, was established in 1987 by the Legislature and named for the late Rudy Perpich, former governor of Minnesota. The agency functions, as well as the 20-yearold arts high school, occupy a 33-acre campus that formerly housed Golden Valley Lutheran College.

The Arts High School offers coursework in six art areas: dance, literary arts, media arts (photography and cinema), music, theater, and visual arts. It is open to all 11th- and 12th-graders who live in Minnesota and apply by audition, and now enrolls 300 students from all over the state. About half live in on-campus dorms at the school; the rest are commuters. But it’s more than a high school. The
Golden Valley campus houses the center’s Professional Development and Research Group, and a library that includes materials for K-12 educators. Students, teachers, artists, schools and arts organizations throughout Minnesota are served through grants, research and professional development programs. The PCAE also works PERPICH: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE in partnership with the Department of Education to help design and implement K-12 arts standards. The proposal to change the center’s status is not a new one. Former Gov. Tim Pawlenty first proposed changing the Perpich to a charter school during the 2009 legislative session. “A number of people then went over and talked with the governor and his staff about the value of the Perpich Center, and it wound up being supported,” said Kevyn Burger, communications director for the Perpich Center for Arts Education. This time, Burger said, “It will be a long process, fairly intensive. There will be a lot more discussion before a lot is resolved.” Susan Mackert, executive director of Perpich, said, “In this year of difficult financial issues for the state of Minnesota, all public dollars are being closely scrutinized. That includes funding for the Perpich Center for Arts Education.” However, she added, “The Perpich Center has always enjoyed strong, bipartisan support. I have no doubt that this will continue. In this time of tight budgets and cutbacks, the resources and support of the Perpich Center is critical.” The Perpich Center has a $7 million annual budget. The first-year cost saving to the state would be about $4.7 million in severance costs for agency employees,
according to Session Weekly. If it became a charter school, the annual cost in the second and subsequent years would be about $2.5 million in lease aid and start-up aid. Burger said administrators at the Perpich Center are in close contact with legislators about the issue. “There is not an extra amount of fear or anxiety here,” Burger said. “It’s a delicate process, and we’re letting it unfold. We’re trying to be shrewd in how we approach it.” She noted that the House bill doesn’t address the center’s outreach activities, but only the high school. Separate from the center’s operating funds, Burger said, the Legislature invited the school to apply for legacy funds that are being used, for example, for arts integration projects in northwestern Minnesota. “Our facility is used for far more than just high school activities,” Burger said. For example, a media arts workshop at the school drew 30 teachers from all over the state during spring break, she said. “We connected with 13,000 Minnesota educators last year through conferences,” Burger said. The center’s grants enable artists to visit state high schools as well, she said. Burger noted that 50 legislators are new to the body this year. “Part of their process is learning about what we do,” she said.

Man sentenced to 41 months in fatal Edina DWI Victim Bob Kuntze of Edina remembered at sentencing hearing BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Nothing has been the same for June Kuntze of Edina since her husband died last fall in a fatal drunk driving accident. “Our world has changed forever,” she said at the sentencing hearing for Christian Neal Rogat, 41, of Edina. His blood alcohol content was 0.15 percent – nearly twice the legal limit – when he turned his SUV into the path of Robert “Bob” Kuntze’s moped scooter Sept. 1, 2010, before fleeing the scene. “He will eventually get his life back but I will never get Bob back or will Ryan get his dad back,” said Kuntze, Friday, April 1, at Hennepin County District Court. Rogat was sentenced to 41 months in prison on one count criminal vehicular homicide. He previously pleaded guilty
Public Safety to four felony charges – two counts of criminal vehicular homicide, one count of operating a vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence of alcohol, and one count of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over .08 percent – in January. The courtroom was packed with supporters for Kuntze, a nurse, and her 22year-old son, Ryan, who is mentally retarded, legally blind, has autism and has suffered from kidney cancer. She described her husband of 29 years as “an exceptional father to Ryan.” She said Ryan looked forward to his return from work each evening, when the two would play games, walk to the park or ride a tandem bicycle with Ryan on the back. On Saturdays, they ran errands together and on Sunday attended church. Following his death at 53, she placed Ryan in a group home because she cannot care for him alone. Kuntze and Assistant County Attorney John Halla asked Judge Mark
Wernick for the full presumptive 48month prison sentence. “A tough sentence won’t bring Bob back but may send a message to others to not drink and drive,” said Kuntze. Halla said a series of decisions made by Rogat led to Bob Kuntze’s death. He said Rogat had been drinking at his home when he got in his vehicle to get more beer that September evening. “He chose to not walk to the Super America. He chose to not bike. He chose to not call a friend. He chose to drive even though the Super America is not one mile away,” said Halla. On his way home, at about 6:25 p.m., he hit the scooter at the intersection of Vernon Avenue and Hansen Road in Edina. Bob Kuntze was thrown into the windshield before hitting the roadway, according to police reports. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center where he died of blunt force injuries. Rogat fled the scene. “He drove home, he parked and then he chose to have another beer,” said Halla. “It was only thanks to a good Samaritan he was located.”
A witness to the accident saw the vehicle that evening and notified police. According to the charges against him, Rogat pulled the vehicle partially behind some bushes at his home. While being transported to the Edina Police Department, he told officers he “freaked out and left.” Public Defender Mark Cosimini argued his client’s low IQ and verbal comprehension warranted a downward durational or dispositional departure from the 41-57 month prison term in sentencing guidelines. According to Cosimini, Rogat’s IQ is one point shy of mild mental retardation and his comprehension is equivalent to that of a 10- to 12-year-old, based on a psychological evaluation. He said Rogat has limited coping abilities and a deficit in reasoning. He painted the picture of a man who has a difficult time getting by on his own. Cosimini said Rogat has had two failed marriages and suffers from depression. His sister manages his SENTENCE: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE finances and he enjoys building model cars and airplanes. “He has chosen a humble life, a lawabiding life and to live in the shelter of his mother,” said Cosimini. Following the accident, he said Rogat underwent chemical dependency training and has support for rehabilitation in the community. Several of Rogat’s family members were in attendance at the hearing. Halla said Rogat had managed to function in society for 40 years, working for 11 years as a cashier at a home improvement store, fathering two children and obtaining a driver’s license. He said Rogat knew enough that he’d be in trouble if he stayed at the scene of the accident. “The defendant’s actions reflect poor judgment rather than impaired judgment due to a low IQ,” said Halla. Wernick said after reviewing psychological evaluations and re-listening to Rogat’s interview with police the night of the accident, he did not believe there was reason to depart from guidelines based on the defendant’s mental capabilities. He said he sentenced Rogat at the bottom of the range because he was cooper-
ative, admitted his guilt and did not have any prior record. Under the sentence, Rogat is eligible for supervised release after 28 months. He received credit for seven days served. No restitution was imposed. Wernick said he also took into account the numerous letters sent on behalf of the victim. At the hearing, June Kuntze’s sister Carol Kreif read excerpts from a few of the roughly 30 impact statements submitted by family, members of the special needs community and co-workers at Alliant Tech, where Bob Kuntze was director of benefits. They described him as a caring father and friend with a sense humor, kind heart, patience and compassion. “He was loved and respected by everyone who came in contact with him,” said Kreif. Before Wernick delivered the sentence, Rogat was asked if he would like to say anything. “It’s hard for me, really hard for me,” he said quietly. “I feel bad.” Following the sentencing, Rogat was taken into custody. Kuntze said she respects the sentencing guidelines, and forgives and feels sorry for Rogat. “It’s a tragedy that shouldn’t have happened and hopefully we can all learn something from it,” she said.

Edina schools ‘Gone Google’ Edina Public Schools have “Gone Google,” with a billboard near the intersection of Interstate 494 and Portland Avenue in Richfield to prove it. The billboard, which went up Monday, March 28, was the search engine’s way of announcing that the school district was selected as one of 10 global winners in its “Gone Google” story contest. The contest was open to users of Google Apps, a suite of web-based applications that allow individuals the ability to access, collaborate and share information anytime, anywhere. Contest entrants were asked to explain how their organization uses Google Apps and why they should be featured in the “Gone Google” ad campaign, which included free publicity on a billboard. Molly Schroeder, Edina Public Schools technology integration specialist, is a Google-certified teacher, Google Apps for Education-certified trainer and worked on the launch of Google Apps in the school district at the beginning of the school year. “When I saw the blog post calling for entries to share our story about how Google Apps has changed the way that

Schroeder said teachers are better equipped to stay relevant in the evolving world of technology and provide tools that allow students to work in the 21st Century.

Edina Schools make AP Achievement List Edina Public Schools is one of 388 school districts in the nation being honored by the College Board with a place on its AP Achievement List. The list is comprised of school districts simultaneously broadening access to Advanced Placement classes and maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher. From 2008 to 2010, Edina Public Schools increased the number of students participating in AP from 887 to 993. The percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit, went from 85 percent in 2008 to 83 percent in 2010. Those figures exclude participation and performance in AP Spanish language exams. “The recognition is a compliment to the staff that challenges students, the families that support students and the students that give their very best in their learning. Everyone needs to cele-
brate this award,” Edina Supt. Ric Dressen said. The list includes 388 school districts representing 43 states, with California’s 37 districts on the list representing the largest number of districts from a single state, followed by Michigan with 29 districts and Pennsylvania with 28 districts.
Dressen named to state education group Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius recently selected Edina Supt. Ric Dressen to serve on the Education Finance Working Group. The group is charged with developing recommendations for school finance reform. In addition to school and civic leaders, citizens and parents, the working group also includes sitting legislative leadership. The group will provide ongoing comment on current funding proposals during the legislative session with final recommendations to be made to the commissioner and Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton in early June.

CITY NEWS Grandview planning kicks off April 14 The Grandview Small Area Plan process will kick off with a community meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, April 14, at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. Last year, a Community Advisory Team of Edina residents led a process to determine the future of the city’s former public works site, 5146 Eden Ave., and the area surrounding it. The group met several times during April 2010 and developed guiding principles for the area, including leveraging publicly owned parcels to create a vibrant district with public and private development. At the time the guiding principles were adopted, the Edina City Council also agreed to embark on a small area planning process for the area, retaining ownership of the public works property until after the study is complete. A Livable Communities Demonstration Account grant from the Metropolitan
Council will defray the costs of the planning process. The yearlong planning process will kick off at the community meeting April 14, when a new Community Advisory Team will be established. Any interested Edina resident is eligible to be a member of the team. Organizing and framing the work plan should be completed before the end of June. Consultants would then be retained and a development framework and implementation plan drafted between July and September. The public would be asked to react to the plan for refinement from October through December. The final plan is expected to be drafted in early 2012. Info: 952-826-0460 or CityofEdina.com.
Compostable yard waste bags required With spring weather finally on its way, the city of Edina is reminding residents about a new state law that requires
yard and organic waste to be collected in compostable bags for pick-up. The Minnesota law has been in effect since the first of the year. Rather than traditional black plastic waste bags, residents must use paper bags, compostable plastic bags – these are typically clear in color – or carts provided by a refuse hauler. The bags can be purchased from most local grocery and home improvement stores. Alternatively, Edina residents can compost their own yard waste or drop it off at a Hennepin County compost disposal site.

The flooding outlook has improved along Minnehaha and Nine Mile creeks in Edina, according to Utility Engineer Jesse Struve. Minnehaha Creek was still within its banks Wednesday, March 30, behind St. Stephen’s Church, 4439 W. 50th St., in Edina. (Photo by Katie Mintz • Sun Newspapers)
Flooding FROM PAGE 1 As of Thursday, March 31, he said the city had filled approximately 16,000 sandbags and delivered about 3,000 to seven homes labeled as at-risk. Both creeks have largely stayed within their banks, he said. “We’re kind of in a holding pattern right now,” said Struve. “It’s highly dependent on rainfall and conditions at Lake Minnetonka.” Telly Mamayek, communications manager for the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, said the district is closely monitoring the lake level. The district operates Grays Bay Dam, which regulates flow of water from the lake into Minnehaha Creek. Mamayek said it’s a balancing act to prevent flooding along the lakeshore and the creek downstream. As of Monday, April 4, the lake had reached its high of 930.22 feet, the point at which water crests the spillway at the dam. “We’re closely watching the weather forecast and adjusting the flow at the dam based on the forecast,” she said.
Kevin Bigalke, Nine Mile Creek Watershed District administrator, said conditions on that creek had also improved over the past week. “There will still be some flooding on the creek but I don’t think it’s going to be as significant as what we were initially anticipating with the modeling,” he said March 31. The Nine Mile Creek Watershed District has been proactive by publicizing the potential risk of flooding to ensure residents are ready, he said. “At this point most of those people are pretty prepared for it, so it’s a matter of wait and see,” Bigalke said. Struve said owners of the at-risk properties may still request sandbags from the city. On Nine Mile Creek, the properties are generally located between Brook Drive and West 70th Street and by Creek Valley Road. On Minnehaha Creek, they are by Cascade Lane, 56th Street, Woodcrest Drive, Woodland Road, Abbott Place and Zenith Avenue. Residences around Arrowhead Lake, Lake Cornelia and Garrison Ponds are also at-risk. The city has detailed maps and links to flooding resources on its website, cityofedina.com. CMYK

Holy Yoga FROM PAGE 1 Church in Waconia. “It’s great yoga, don’t get me wrong, but we focus on building intimacy with Christ.” She was introduced to Holy Yoga when she began attending a church in Phoenix, with a sports ministry that offered Christ-based yoga every day of the week. “My life just began to transform,” said Goodmanson, who at the time was studying to be an injury massage therapist. “My day-to-day stress just began to melt away. My faith increased exponentially.” She was introduced through a friend to Phoenix-based Holy Yoga founder Brooke Boon, and soon after was an employee. Boon will be in town to lead a two-day Holy Yoga workshop in Edina April 15 and 16. Holy Yoga has grown quickly since its beginning in 2005, said Jo Ann Bauer, communications director. The former KSTP reporter moved south last year to join its staff. “We have 325 certified instructors now in 38 states on three continents,” said Bauer. “Arizona and Minnesota are the hubs that have grown the fastest.” Half of Holy Yoga’s six-member core staff live in the state, including Wayzata resident Goodmanson, who moved to Minnesota in 2009. Holy Yoga trains instructors to lead Christ-centered yoga. Instructors then start their own practices. Most teach out of a church and their classes are donation-based. “It’s the trifecta – an intense physical, emotional and spiritual experience,” said Bethany Connelly, an instructor at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina and Spirit of the Lake Yoga in Excelsior. “It leaves you feeling rejuvenated connected and inspired.”
At her noon Thursday class, March 31, in Edina, participant Jenni Moser, a Robbinsdale resident and employee at Edina-based Regis Corporation, said it offers a welcome break during a busy day. “The stress just disappears,” she said. But not all Christians are on board with the practice. Goodmanson said there is a degree of controversy that follows Holy Yoga. “There are a lot of misnomers that yoga is a related to or belongs to another religion,” she said. Some believe yoga is connected with Hinduism because yoga has been incorporated as part of that religion. But Goodmanson said yoga actually predates religion. She said those who practice yoga do not have to worry that they are worshipping another god. Chris Enstad, senior pastor at Elim, said it’s quite the opposite. “We’re not doing this to worship ourselves and we’re not going to lead anybody off the path,” he said. “For me, I feel it’s like the one time someone preaches to me. It really fills my cup back up again.” Enstad began doing yoga at a secular gym to relieve stress after being laid off from another congregation close to a year ago. When he joined Elim this fall, he no longer had time to attend, but realized he could bring yoga to him. In the month that Elim has offered Holy Yoga, he’s seen several new faces. “There’s so many other ways to experience God, think about God and deepen our relationship with him. Our bodies have been the most neglected part of that equation throughout history,” he said. Enstad points to a piece of scripture, Mark 12:30, in which Jesus calls for people “to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” For more information on Holy Yoga, visit twincities.holyyoga.net.

C.J. DeBerg
Tennis teams serve it up
Queens University of Charlotte, N.C. is off to a good start in its spring golf season. C.J. DeBerg, an Edina High graduate, helped Queens to eighth place in the annual Pizza Inn-Barton Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. DeBerg finished fourth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 144. DeBerg’s coach during his career at Edina High School was Phil Finanger.
Lake Conference boys tennis is loaded with talent again this spring. Defending state Class AA champion Eden Prairie is in the mix now along with Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Wayzata. Players to watch are Scott Elsaas, Sam Doud and David Zhou of Eden Prairie, Erik Nordahl of Edina, Ryan Erickson of Hopkins and Michael Tebon of Minnetonka. Lake teams will open the season in nonconference matches early next week. Hopkins will play Breck at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Hopkins High courts. Edina will travel to Mounds View for a 4 p.m. match the same day. Wayzata will play at St. Louis Park at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. Eden Prairie will face Minneapolis Washburn at 4:30 p.m. April 13 at Eden Prairie’s Round Lake Park courts.

Lee has played in all 43 of Notre Dame’s games this winter. He is the secondleading scorer on the team with 44 points on 24 goals and 20 assists, and his plus-minus rating is a plus-19. The Irish enter the Frozen Four with an overall record of 25-13-5.
Boys lacrosse begins Boys lacrosse teams in the Lake Conference will play their season openers next week. The schedule begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 11, when Hopkins plays Holy Family Catholic at Hopkins High Stadium. Taney reached legendary status at Edina High. As a high school player, she was a combined 166-0 in singles and doubles. Taney won two state doubles championships and three state singles championships.
Softball’s opening day Lake Conference girls fastpitch softball teams will open the season with two 4:15 p.m. games Monday, April 11. Hopkins will play Minnetonka at Minnetonka High’s Legacy Field. Edina will play Eden Prairie at Eden Prairie’s Miller Park.

After completing his career at Edina High, he played collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame from 1997 through 2001.
Success for DeBergs C.J. DeBerg of Edina is having a great year with the Queens University men’s golf team. Queens, located in Charlotte, N.C., is a school with a solid golf tradition, and DeBerg is certainly adding to it. He had 18-hole round of 70 and 68 on a par-72 course to finish third in the Carolina Sands Tournament last week. DeBerg will lead Queens into the Conference Carolinas Championship April 16-19. While C.J. DeBerg has excelled on the golf course, his younger brother Will has had a good spring, too. Will helped the University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team win the NCAA Division II championship last month.
Edina tennis tradition The Edina High boys tennis team could not have picked a much tougher opener. Led by Erik Nordahl, the Hornets will take on the Mounds View Mustangs at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Mounds View High courts. Nordahl was one half of a state doubles championship team in 2009. Last season, he added to his medal collection with a second place in state Class AA singles. Edina has had a great run under head coach Gary Aasen with six state championships since 2000. Lake Conference tennis could be interesting this season because every team has a good nucleus back from last season. No. 1 singles players returning to their respective teams are Ryan Erickson at Hopkins, Michael Tebon at Minnetonka and Scott Vezzosi at Wayzata. Eden Prairie has a whole host of capable players back from its 2010 state Class AA championship team. One of the biggest events of the season will be the Edina Invitational Saturday, April 30. The event includes Edina and Wayzata plus several other state contenders including defending state Class A champion Blake.

DEADLINE FOR
You were tall and handsome with dark hair and dark eyes. We first met at a Department Store in Downtown Mpls. in the mid to late 1970’s. Your parents and some siblings lived in the Crystal, MN area. You entered the Navy and were stationed in California (San Diego or San Francisco?) For years you would call, or pop in and out of my life. At one point I visited you in California to attend a banquet at which you received an award. We stayed with your friends Walt and Susan. The last I heard, you were still in California. I wasn’t always the kindest and would like to apologize for that. If you know Terry or how to contact him, please email Susan at: suziq4967@yahoo.com
