“The Nutcracker” ballet is a holiday tradition for one Edina family. But rather than watch the Christmas classic, they perform it. The three Linder children, Peter, 12, Leo, 11, and Maria, 7, will dance in the Academy of Russian Ballet’s annual production of “The Nutcracker” this month. Students at the Eden Prairie-based school began

rehearsing for the show in October, and practice several times a week, including extended rehearsals over Thanksgiving break. Peter, an eighth-grader at South View Middle School, is dancing in a lead role as the Nutcracker Prince. “It’s hard. There are a lot of different steps I have to learn,” said Peter. But he said he enjoys the challenge. He and Leo began at the school three years ago, both willing to try something new. “I thought it’d be fun, a good physical activity where I can exercise my whole body doing ballet,” said Peter. “It’s art, plus I really like the teacher. He pushes me to my best effort.” ‘NUTCRACKER’: TO PAGE 28

New Edina manager to focus on city procedures, Southdale Q & A with new Edina City Manager Scott Neal BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Less than a month on the job, Edina’s new City Manager Scott Neal has some ideas for the city. The former Eden Prairie city manager with 22 years experience in city

administration has been busy getting to know Edina since beginning Monday, Nov. 8. He’s been blogging about his experience on the city website, www.cityofedina.com. And on Monday, Nov. 22, he sat down with the Edina SunCurrent to talk about what he’s learned and where the city is going. Question: How have your Scott Neal first weeks been in Edina, and what have you been up to?

Last Winter You Swore You’d NEVER SHOVEL SNOW Again.

Neal: The first few weeks have been very busy. I’ve been using that precious early time to meet my coworkers, tour our facilities here and really just try to get acquainted and make a good impression on the people I work with and also make a good impression on the people I work for. Q: What have you been most surprised to learn? Neal: I was most surprised to learn

about the history of Centennial Lakes and the Edinborough Park area. I knew a little bit about those facilities but I didn’t know about their history and how they came to be and they’re really very significant assets for Edina. It was good for me to know that. Q: What are some areas you want to focus on? Neal: Internally, I want to focus on NEAL: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE our administrative overhead functions first. That’s an area where I think I’ve got some value I can give the city right off the bat – figuring out our policies, procedures, how we do our budget, how we do our facilities, human resources, how we interact with the community, that kind of thing. Externally, it will be learning about Southdale, and where Southdale has been, and where Southdale is today and where we hope Southdale might be going in the future. Q: Why is Southdale such an important area for the city? Neal: It really is the commercial heart of the city. It’s important for a city, especially a standalone suburban community, to have a strong commercial heart to it that people who live here can be proud of. That’s right up there on the priority list for me. Q: What’s in store for Edina in 2011? Neal: From what I can tell, from at least the city’s budget anyway, is in terms of city services and facilities, what’s in store for Edina residents is a lot of what they saw in 2010. You’re not going to see anything big and new happen. You’re not going to see new services roll out. Hopefully what you see is a fine-tuning improvement of what

Neal: This is a great opportunity for me and I think my background has prepared me well for Edina, particularly my last two jobs – working in Northfield, a community that has a lot in common with Edina in terms of residents interested in city government, and forming committees and task forces and having a lot of interaction with city government, and also working in Eden Prairie, a city that has demographically a lot of commonalities with Edina but doesn’t have the same kind of citizenry. Those two jobs in those two communities have prepared me well. I think this is going to be a good match for me and a good match for Edina.

Edina making zoning fixes to address Court’s decision on variances City Council considering ordinance amendments to circumvent new ban BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The city of Edina is taking action after a Minnesota Supreme Court decision this summer derailed its ability to grant variances. On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Edina City Council considered three code changes that would eliminate the need for variances on some residential and commercial projects that fall outside current building regulations. However, at least one couple with a project on hold said the fixes might not be flexible enough for them to move forward with their plans for a new home. Edina previously granted variances when it determined a property owner’s request was reasonable, and that sticking to code would cause an undue hardship. The opinion issued in Krummenacher v. City of Minnetonka states “a munici-

City Council pality does not have the authority to grant a variance unless the applicant can show that her property cannot be put to a reasonable use without the variance.” “It’s a major change in the way we review ordinances,” said Planning Director Cary Teague. City officials across the state said in most cases it means they no longer have any discretion to grant variances. The City Council heard the first reading of zoning ordinance amendments addressing expansions to non-conforming uses and creation of Planned Unit Developments. The Council will consider the amendments again at its Tuesday, Dec. 21, meeting. It also gave final approval to an amendment modifying driveway width requirements at the meeting.

over the last three years, the city found nearly half were for expansions to nonconforming uses or setbacks – often for homes built before the existing city code was in place. One way to address the situation, said Teague, is allowing expansions of nonconforming uses that maintain the nonconformity without greatly exacerbating it. Recent state statute gave cities the ability to do this through an ordinance process rather than through variances. The proposed ordinance amendment would allow building additions into existing non-conforming setbacks up to a maximum of 200 square-feet on each level of the home or up to the existing non-conforming square footage of the home, whichever is less. The second part of the amendment addresses an issue from the city’s massing ordinance aimed at ensuring new or remodeled homes are constructed in the same scale as the surrounding neighborhood. Currently, the code limits the new home’s first floor height to be no more than one foot taller than in the old home. In the past three years, the city has

granted six variances from this rule due to groundwater or flood plain concerns. Under the proposed ordinance, property owners would be granted a conditional use permit to exceed the one-foot limit in three circumstances – to elevate the first level two feet above the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood plain, to protect the home from groundwater protrusion, or to meet state or city codes or other statutory requirements – as long as the proposal matched the neighborhood character in “mass, height and scale.” City Council members discussed a requirement in the second circumstance that a hydrologic engineer determine if groundwater issues necessitate a higher first-floor elevation. Connie and Jeff Miller, whose plans to rebuild their home were put on hold due to the Supreme Court decision, asked for that stipulation to be removed. “We believe it’s not quite flexible enough and may be a little too restrictive,” said Connie Miller at the meeting, who added that costly tests may or may

not show a water problem depending on when conducted. She also said the third circumstance was too restrictive and does not reflect current building practices. Under state building code, the minimum ceiling height is 7 feet, but few are built that low, especially lower-level walkouts like hers intended for primary living space. The Millers had planned to seek a variance from the one-foot rule for first floor. In their current home, the lowerlevel walkout has a 7-foot ceiling. They would like to bring it up to 8 feet, but need to use the extra foot instead to bring up the building foundation. They said a backyard pond has flooded the floor in the past causing mold and mildew problems. Jeff Miller said there should be flexibility in the conditional use permit process that encourages dialogue between the homeowner and the city. He said the house they are proposing to build would be less intrusive to the neighborhood than an option that doesn’t require a variance. From the street, their rambler appears to be one story, with the lower level visible from only the back. They could keep the 7-foot ceilings on the lower level and add two stories above and still be within the overall maximum height guidelines. Teague said city staff is working on the language regarding the groundwater issue and would likely bring a draft to the City Council for review Tuesday, Dec. 7. He said the City Council also requested a hydrologic engineer attend the Dec. 21 meeting to answer questions about testing methods. “We’re hopeful and we trust the City Council will fix this in a way that works for us and also for others in these predicaments,” said Connie Miller. She said she was also hopeful the state Legislature would fix the statute on variances to address the Supreme Court decision.

The City Council also granted first reading to an amendment that would create a new zoning designation – a Planned Unit Development for commercial uses. “The primary benefit of a PUD rezoning is it allows the city more control over proposed development,” said Teague. The Edina Planning Commission began working on the language for the amendment more than a year ago in order to give the city more control and flexibility. It will also address the city’s inability to grant variances. The code would essentially create a unique zoning district with specific regulations for each project, eliminating the need for variances from other zoning requirements. Teague said it will be up to the city when to allow a Planned Unit Development rezoning. The amendment includes language that encourages developers to hold neighborhood meetings and submit informal sketch plans to the city prior to filing applications, he said.

Minimum driveway width The City Council also unanimously approved an ordinance amendment removing the minimum driveway width in residential districts. “Currently we have a minimum driveway width of 12 feet for residential properties,” said Teague. He said that’s been problematic in older areas like the Country Club District where lots are often only 50 feet wide and cannot accommodate large driveways. The amendment gets rid of any minimum width, removing the need for a variance. “We’re also suggesting some changes that would allow pervious pavers as a driveway material,” he said. Driveways can now be built of any all-weather, durable and dust-free material, according to the amendment.

LETTERS TO THE E DITOR Student unhappy with trail process To the editor: As a college student studying public discourse, I am alarmed as I watch the overall process of how the proposed Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail through Edina is being addressed. I understand wanting a trail, but to put it in this area of intact environment is just a disappointment. Public meetings are held in which the public cannot speak but can only listen to presentations made by the Three Rivers Park District. No public input is allowed at forums other than submitting questions on a note card, which may or may not be answered by the Park District panel of experts. Information provided to Edina City Council members is provided only by the Park District – the very group that stands to gain the most from running an invasive trail along one of the most beautiful places in Edina. Not enough information is being provided to Edina citizens, and the information that is being provided only comes from one viewpoint and source. Most citizens of Edina do not understand the size of this trail, the immense cost and the long-term effects. Bike trails are great to have, but we have many other alternatives, including solar-lit in-road lighting, painted trail lanes and a combination of on- and off-road routes. I may be a student, but I’d prefer to be a student that fights for a solution that doesn’t involve so many disadvantages. Chelsea Johnson Edina

Give children the gift of literacy Reading to kids at early age helps them succeed later BY KATHERINE DEBERTIN AND JACKIE CAVERLY • GUEST COLUMNISTS Do you have a very young child in your life? It’s not too soon to think about what you can do to help prepare him or her for school. Research shows that children who have developed six basic pre-reading skills begin school more ready to learn. Children need to know the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes, be able to rhyme and hear smaller parts of words, know how to handle a book, know what words mean and know how to use words to describe or tell a story. These skills are needed before children can learn to read. Does it sound like a lot? In a way, children do have a lot of work to do, but it most often looks like playing. There are many ways for parents to help children grow into readers, but reading together every day is a joyful, necessary and easy way to help children develop these skills. The early literacy years aren’t about drills and flashcards – they’re about exposing children to language and allowing them the space and time to get comfortable, develop their own expertise, and most of all, have fun. As parents and caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher. Reading together, singing and chanting nursery rhymes all contribute to literacy skills. Start doing these together from the moment your child is born. Your physical presence during these activities actually helps them learn. Sorry, the television and recorded voices do

not develop language, only your voice and words will, according to research. Establishing a love of reading in your child will help them succeed in every school subject later on. The librarians at your local library are there to help. They can guide you to books and resources. Plan on attending free story times. Story times at Hennepin County libraries are grounded in the most current research and are presented with an understanding of how the six basic pre-reading skills develop. Librarians will highlight the skills and give you great ideas for fun and easy activities to do at home. You are probably doing most of them already. For more ideas about early literacy, visit www.hclib.org/BirthTo6. Happy reading! Debertin is a librarian at the Hennepin County Library in Minnetonka, and Caverly is a librarian at the Hennepin County Library in Eden Prairie.

City board, commission Public hearing on Nine applications sought Mile Creek trail Dec. 7 The Edina City Council is accepting applications for 2011 appointments to its advisory boards and commissions. Advisory boards and commissions with anticipated vacancies include Art Center Board, Board of Appeal and Equalization, Community Health Committee, Construction Board of Appeals, Energy and Environment Commission, Human Rights and Relations Commission, Planning Commission and Transportation Commission. Most volunteer positions are three-year terms. Most advisory boards include student representatives. Student appointments are one-year terms. Applications for student appointments will be accepted in the spring. Those terms will begin in the fall of 2011 after the start of the 2011-2012 school year. To receive an application or for more information, visit the city’s website, www.CityofEdina.com, or call City Clerk Debra Mangen, 952-826-0408. Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. The Edina City Council will approve all of the appointments. The City Council intends to interview all applicants. Interviews will be held after hours on Jan. 5, 6 and 11. Appointments will be made in early 2011.

The Edina City Council will hold a public hearing on the route for the proposed Nine Mile Creek Regional Trail at its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 7. The meeting begins 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. Three Rivers Park District, which will construct and maintain the trail, has presented the city with three options for its route – a creek-based route, a street-based route or a no build alternative. The creek option generally follows the path of Nine Mile Creek on cityowned parkland and requires no taking of private land. The street option would be constructed on public right-of-way adjacent to the road. If built, the 7- to 8mile-long Edina segment would connect with segments in Richfield and Hopkins. The estimated cost to construct the Edina segment is $17 million to $20 million. Three Rivers Park District will seek grants to help pay for construction. The Edina Park Board recommended a creek-based route to the City Council in October. If the City Council selects a route following its Dec. 7 meeting, the Nine Mile Creek Watershed District and Edina School District will be asked to weigh in before final approval by the Three Rivers Park District Board of Commissioners. Whole Foods Market planning Edina storeWeekly at Centennial Lakes Plaza BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Whole Foods Market is planning a new grocery store in Edina’s Centennial Lakes Plaza shopping center. The proposed site plan and exterior design were presented at a neighborhood open house Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the Hughes Pavilion at Centennial Lakes Park. The project was slated to go before the Edina Planning Commission for final development plan review at its Wednesday, Dec. 1, meeting. The project will also need City Council approval.

The roughly 32,000 square-foot new building is proposed for the southeast corner of France Avenue and Parklawn Avenue where Storables and Thomasville Furniture now cover about 35,000 square-feet. “We would expect construction to begin in March,” said Bruce Carlson, with project coordinator Mid-America Real Estate Group. Kathy Anderson, project architect with Architectural Consortium, said Whole Foods would extend about 40 feet into the shopping center parking lot beyond the current Storables building. A loading dock and additional parking

would cover most of the Thomasville Furniture footprint. She said the building façade incorporates brick and limestone elements featured in other Edina buildings. Parker’s ‘Heaven Rejoices’ offered Dec. 10-12 at church BY JENNIE OLSON • SUN NEWSPAPERS How do you creatively tell a story that’s been repeated for more than 2,000 years? For Ken Parker, executive director of Christian Arts Ministries in Bloomington, it’s all about perspective. Berean Baptist Church in Burnsville and his group are combining talents to perform “Heaven Rejoices,” an original Christmas musical written by Parker and hosted at Berean Baptist. “Churches year after year are looking for a way to retell the story of the nativity and incarnation,” Parker said. “This musical is very unique in the fact that it’s all done from the angels’ points of view.” The musical begins before the world was created with the angels overhearing God the Father discussing how he’s going to create a universe. They are astounded about his plans and the revelation that there will be other created beings. The story journeys from before the world was created until the nativity. “We have about 90 voices in the choir and wonderful, skilled actors, actresses and dancers. It’s a remarkable assemblage of people,” Parker said. Choir members and dancers from Berean and Parker’s ministry will be dressed as the angels and will be accompanied by a professional orchestra. The music is an array of many musical genres, including contemporary, jazz, Broadway, gospel, ballads, Spanish, calypso and classic. “When I say classic, I don’t mean classical,” Parker added. “I mean that it’s the wonderful, rich, lush sounds of big

orchestras and tight choral singing. It’s that classic American sound that has been with us since the 1920s.” Parker wrote “Heaven Rejoices” in 1981, and Bob Krogstad, Dove Awardwinning arranger for artists Sandi Patty, Mel Tormé, Michael Crawford and Natalie Cole, wrote the orchestration. “He’s one of the great orchestrators in America and has done some phenomenal stuff. It’s all beautiful writing in this musical,” Parker said. Parker has been involved in local church ministry for more than 45 years as a pastor, worship leader and dramatist. He founded Christian Arts Ministries after leaving a post at Grace Church in Eden Prairie to create original productions that allow Christians to use their talents to communicate the gospel. He joined the Berean Baptist staff in March after the former minister of music was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer able to continue his duties as director. Originally, Parker was intending to stay for a month, but the church asked if he would be able to stay for an additional year, which he accepted. Parker asked Berean if the church would consider doing a combined Christmas production with his ministry rather than having two separate productions. “I love the people,” Parker said of Berean Baptist. “They’re just delightful, and I’m having a good time.” The performances will take place Dec. 10-12 at Berean Baptist Church, located at 309 East County Road 42. For more information or for tickets, call 952223-1870 or visit heavenrejoices.com.

Hopkins enrollment figures present good and bad news BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Grade Kindergarten Grade 1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12 TOTAL K-12 Annual change

Hopkins Public Schools’ enrollment once again dropped this school year. The good news for the district is that it came in higher than the projected totals and that the annual rate of the decline is decreasing. The district’s total enrollment in 201011 is 7,208 students, according to a report presented to the School Board at its Nov. 18 meeting. Though this is smaller than last year’s enrollment of 7,269, it is higher than the projected 2010-11 total of 7,132 by 76 students. Each year, district administration develops enrollment projections. The projections inform the budgeting process by generating the estimated amount of pupils. This amount is used in calculating estimated revenue projections. The 1.17 percent decrease in total enrollment for 2010-11 also represents a smaller figure than previous years. Hopkins’ enrollment declined 3.05 percent in 2009-10 and 4.38 percent in 2008-09. “This allows us to work with a more stabilized revenue picture,” assistant superintendent Nik Lightfoot said of the lower rate of change. “It is however, still a decline as

Lake of the Woods

The trend in Hopkins’ open enrollment for several years is both an increase in students coming in and going out. Though Hopkins’ net open enrollment increased by 5.54 percent from last school year, the total ratio between “in” and “out” students was 1.48, compared to 1.5 last year and 2.05 in 2005-06.

“We continue to analyze our open enrollment trends,” Lightfoot said. “Our work would be to maximize the number of open enrollment spaces available to families and to encourage district families to choose Hopkins. We continue to see good results coming from our work with enhancing and redesigning program opportunities in a time when others are reducing.” Another factor the district analyzes when looking at enrollment figures is Hennepin County births – it uses these corresponding figures to project kindergarten totals. For instance, Hopkins’ kindergarten enrollment of 507 this school year is 2.5-percent smaller than last year, but county births were down by 2.21 percent in 2005 – the corresponding year for this 2010-11 kindergarten students. Though this year’s enrollment figures were a mix of good and bad signs, Hopkins administration is still projecting declines for total enrollment in future years. It is projecting enrollment to decline by 72 students next year, 84 in 2012-13 and 96 in 2013-14.

Carlson still pouring heart and soul into her music BY KYLE LUND • CONTRIBUTING WRITER “There is a story behind every song that I write and usually behind every song that I arrange that is very intimately significant to me,” said Mary Beth Carlson. “This whole journey really framed us and a purpose for me in writing songs.” Carlson’s inspiration for her latest compact disc, “Smile with a Song in Your Heart,” is her daughter’s battle with cerebral palsy and autism. Recently, growing side effects have profoundly challenged Mary Beth Carlson and her family. “I started writing Carlson songs that had themes of peace and the need for restoration for the calm in our home that had always been there” said Carlson, who will perform Friday, Dec. 10 in Bloomington. As the severity of her daughter’s illness appeared to stabilize, Carlson says

Carlson’s latest CD. The two solo performers met years ago at a benefit and finally had a chance to work together. “She believes in the magic of music. It’s funny she told me just to come in [to the studio] and the magic would happen, and she was right. She was happy with what I played,” McLaughlin said. “Supportive listeners” is the term Carlson uses for her fans, the word “fan” itself is a bit of a turn-off. “Everybody understands what that word is. To me it doesn’t feel as friendly. ‘Supportive listener’ feels like the kind of listeners who respond to me with emails, phone calls and their letters. It says what I mean, a reflection of how I feel about the people appreciating the music we’ve shared for years and years,” said Carlson. The driving force behind Carlson is her faith. “It’s very specific. Quite simply, I begin with prayer, reading God’s word. The theme is interwoven throughout all the words. Then the words give the music heart. Knowing that everything is based in faith. That forms the passion.”

COMMUNITY NOTES Michel to lead Senate Jobs committee Republican Sen. Geoff Michel, representing Edina and west Bloomington, was recently named chairman of the Senate Jobs and Economic Growth Committee. Michel, re-elected to his third term in the Senate, was also named deputy majority leader by members of the new Senate Republican majority.

Committee assignments followed the Republican Party’s streamlining of the Senate structure with a reduction of the number of standing committees from 25 to 16 and combining policy and finance divisions. Legislative leaders said they made the change to reduce cost and make the process more open and transparent for citizens to follow. The Legislative session begins Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The food drive benefits VEAP, serving families in need in the Bloomington, Edina, Minneapolis and Richfield areas. “We set a high goal – 900 pounds of food,” said Michele Hofmann Grams, executive program director at Kinderberry Hill in Edina. “The children were so excited when our goal was surpassed.” The students will celebrate with a pizza party. Reusable bottle program successful in Three Rivers Park District

The Three Rivers Park District parks sold 10,374 reusable bottles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day in 2010 as part of a pilot program to phase out the sales of beverages in disposable plastic containers. (Photo courtesy of Three Rivers Park District)

This spring, the Three Rivers Parks Board approved a pilot program to phase out the sales of beverages in disposable plastic containers at Park District facilities by summer 2010. Three Rivers developed a stafftraining program, purchased reusable bottles and created public education materials in time to launch the pilot program on Memorial Day weekend. Implementation of the pilot program required support from throughout the organization. A key component of the program was education for park staff and the public. Collectively, the parks sold 10,374 reusable bottles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Baker National Golf Course and Hyland Visitor Center sold the most reusable bottles at 3,257 and 2,352, respectively. The reusable bottle option was successful in reducing the number of disposable plastic bottles sold, according to the Three Rivers Park District, thus eliminating a portion

of the Park District’s waste stream, which was the objective of the pilot program. A comparison of sales data for water in disposable plastic bottles indicates a 48 percent reduction in 2010 from the previous summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Overall, the pilot program was “well-received” by park guests, Three Rivers Park District stated. A survey conducted by Park District research staff indicated that 83 percent of respondents agreed with the statement “Three Rivers should encourage the use of reusable water bottles.” Maintenance staff has confirmed that the reusable bottles were not being tossed in park waste receptacles. Supervisors and managers in the park system attributed much of the success of the program to the seasonal staff for promoting and explaining the reusable bottle option. With Board support, staff proposes to continue the reusable bottle program in 2011.

Volunteer FROM PAGE 1 Cancer Research Fund, which funds Care Partners, in recognition of her commitment to Care Partners’ family volunteer program. Families come from across the country for treatment at the University, and if they choose, they can be matched with a volunteer like Alexander. Volunteers are assigned one family at a time and are with each family a minimum of 120 days during treatment and recovery. Oftentimes, they are with families for several months. Alexander has spent up to 130 hours with each family doing things like bringing meals to the hospital, picking up friends and family at the airport, being with parents during procedures, babysitting, running errands and often just listening. “She understands the importance of connecting immediately with the family, getting to know them right away and finding out what their needs are,” said Alex Thwaites, Care Partners program coordinator. “She’s very caring and it’s very obvious she’s doing this because she truly wants to do something to help.” A former owner of Maternal Instincts maternity store and buyer for Target and Dayton’s, Alexander first got involved with Children’s Cancer Research Fund raising money. She solicited ads from her friends in the fashion industry for the organization’s program at its annual benefit Fash Bash, now called Glamorama.

COLONIAL

In the 90s, she chaired the event. While planning, she visited the hospital and was exposed to Care Partners’ work. When she retired from business in the late 90s, she decided to get more involved. “I always did a lot of volunteer work but I decided I wanted to do hands-on things,” said Alexander, who is also on the advisory board for Stages Theatre in Hopkins, and was previously on the Minnesota Organization on Adolescent Pregnancy, Prevention and Parenting Board and president of the Edina Girls Athletic Association. She started in the Care Partners family volunteer program in 2003 and has since worked with 10 different children and their families. “I’m always working on some project for someone, but this is what feels the best,” she said. As a mother, Alexander said she’s been fortunate to have healthy children and wants to do what she can to help others in the trying situation. She and longtime partner Stan Eisenberg share five kids, all of whom graduated Edina High School between 1999 and 2007. “There is nothing worse for a mom than having a sick child,” said Alexander. “I’ve met some really incredible families. They have an amazing strength about them. They just do.” Alexander said each is different. Those with friends or family in the area might need less help while others have no support network. She connects with families at least once a week while they’re in the Twin Cities – many rent apartments or stay at VOLUNTEER: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the Ronald McDonald House – to see if there’s anything she can do to make their stay easier. Often, she said, they are so busy focusing on treatment that they will not ask for help. But there’s a lot she can do. She has given parents much-needed nights off babysitting the patient or siblings. She’s acted as a tour guide, taking families sightseeing around Minneapolis or to the Mall of America. She’ll help run errands, clean or even pack at the end of their stay. She will also bring pick-meups like coffee, baked goods, magazines and toys to the hospital, sometimes just leaving them at the front desk to be delivered. “I love doing that,” she said. “The smallest of things they appreciate.” Alexander said a volunteer’s simple presence is also important. Sometimes having a diversion helps relieve the stress and fears that accompany treatment. The holidays are an especially hard time for families to be at the hospital, she said. She’s taken Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas presents to family on occasions. “One year my daughter and I went to Byerly’s and we brought a complete turkey feast,” said Alexander. “That

night their son was really sick, and I don’t know when they ate dinner, but I know they really appreciated it.” Of the 10 children she’s worked with, one has since passed away. Alexander said her friends ask how she doesn’t cry when visiting the seriously ill children. She said she finds an inner strength when she walks into their hospital rooms. “It’s all about what they need,” said Alexander. “I put away whatever is going on in my life and totally focus on their needs.” There are also good times to balance harder times. “The best thing for me is when I get the call they’re going to go home,” said Alexander. “A lot times they let me take them to the airport and I get to hug them goodbye. I see these kids taking off and starting a new life.” She’s stayed in touch with many of the families. Some still call her when they come back to the University for annual check-ups. They will meet for dinner or coffee. “It’s just amazing seeing these kids come back vibrant and full of life,” said Alexander. She said she would begin working with another family this winter.

Academy owners Kirill Bak and wife Svetlana Gavrilova trained at The Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and performed around the world with the Mussorgsky State Opera and Ballet and the Boris Aifman Ballet before coming to the United States 10 years ago to open the school in Eden Prairie. They teach students the Vaganova syllabus, which combines the strongest parts of different ballet techniques from around the world. Bak said the Linder brothers have improved a lot since starting at the Academy. The version of the “The Nutcracker” performed by the school is a close adaptation of the original Russian version, which was choreographed by Marius Petipa and based on the story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Many of the steps from the original ballet, which premiered more than a century ago in St. Petersburg, Russia, are replicated in the local performances. Leo, a seventh-grader at South View, is dancing in several roles including a soldier and Russian. He’s looking forward to the performances Friday, Dec. 17, through Sunday, Dec. 18, at the Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center. “It’s quite exciting to be on stage,” he said. Parents Irina and Bruce Linder will help out backstage, along with other parents of dancers ages 3-18. Students at the school come from around the Twin Cities metro. “The Nutcracker” includes four other Edina youth ages 4-7. Irina Linder said the show is not only a Linder family tradition, but a holiday staple for all. “It really puts you in the Christmas mood,” she said. “With the kids dancing, it’s quite touching.” Community Editor Chris Dillmann contributed to this story.

The Hornets finished second in the state Class AA tournament last season and have an experienced cast led by senior forward Sami Reber and junior goaltender Maddie Dahl.

Edina skaters get busy The Edina High boys hockey team has two non-conference games against opponents from the South Suburban Conference this week. Coach Curt Giles’ Hornets will play Burnsville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Braemar Arena. The Hornets will play Eagan at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, also at Braemar. Edina’s leader is senior forward Steven Fogarty, who recently committed to play hockey at the University of Notre Dame.

Swimming relays set The Lake Conference swimming season begins with the Lake Relays at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Edina’s Art Downey Aquatic Center. All five Lake teams – Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Wayzata – will compete in the relays. Edina is defending state Class AA champion. – Compiled by John Sherman

Brauer, one of the senior standouts for the Edina High girls hockey team, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the University of Connecticut next season.

BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Many major-college hockey programs throughout the country were interested in signing Edina High senior Sami Reber to a National Letter of Intent, but now the decision is final. “At the start of the recruiting process I wanted to keep my options open,” said Reber. Early this fall, two Ivy League schools were left on her short list, and she chose Harvard over Dartmouth. “I visited Harvard at the very beginning of September,” Reber said last week. “I fell in love with the school and knew it was the right place for me.” The educational benefits of attending Harvard were a primary factor in Reber’s decision, but there was more to it than that. “The girls on the hockey team are amazing and so are the coaches,” she said. “It is a good program. Harvard is usually within the top three teams in the Ivy League.” Before she goes off to Cambridge, Mass., Reber has some business to take care of in Minnesota. Last winter the Hornets made it to the state Class AA title game before losing to Roseville 3-0. After coming so close last season, Reber and her teammates are determined to win the championship this winter. “The most exciting games we play [before the playoffs] are against the other teams in the Lake Conference,” Reber noted. “As far as the playoffs are concerned, we’ll take it one step at a time.” Reber’s role on the team is to generate offense. She had 25 goals last season and has seven goals and seven assists through six games this season. The Hornets have a 5-1-0 record. Edina suffered its first loss of the season, 4-3 to Blake School, in the semifinals of the Cake-Eater Classic Nov. 26 at Braemar Arena. The Hornets rebounded the next night to defeat Breck School 3-1

Sami Reber in the third-place game. There was an interesting footnote to the Edina-Blake game as Reber and another Harvard recruit, Hillary Crowe, went head to head. “The Blake game threw us for a loop,” said Reber. “We weren’t expecting them to be as strong as they are. It was a fastpaced, competitive game, and I enjoyed it even though we lost. “Our mindset against Breck on Saturday was that we had to come out and play our game the entire game. We played very well defensively and limited their scoring chances.” Edina head coach Laura Slominski said it is a privilege to coach a player like Reber. “Sami is making better decisions in attacking the net this year, and she has been rewarded with some nice goals,” said Slominski. “She’s a great player and a great person.” Reber’s interest in hockey started at an early age. She got her first pair of skates when she was 3, and by the time she was 6 she was playing Mite hockey with the boys. “I played with the boys through the first year of Squirts,” she said. Some of her teammates were current boys varsiREBER: TO NEXT PAGE

Edina falls in Turkey Trot tourney finals

L AKE NOTES Edinan goes Maverick Jamie Bresnahan, a 6-foot senior forward for the Edina High girls basketball team, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Minnesota State University, Mankato next season. Bresnahan averaged 8.7 points and eight rebounds per game last season and is a two-time all-conference player. In choosing the Mavericks, Bresnahan kept a family tradition alive. Her father Bob was an all-conference baseball player at the school. Her brother Jay was also an all-conference baseball player at MSU. “We are thrilled that Jamie will continue the Bresnahan tradition here,” said MSU women’s basketball coach Pam Gohl. “She has a natural knack for rebounding.”

Wayzata knocks off EHS BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Lake Conference boys hockey fans got a good look at two of the best teams in the state Nov. 26-27 in the Turkey Trot at Plymouth Ice Center. Wayzata, the state’s second-ranked Class AA team, knocked off top-ranked Edina 3-2 in the final Nov. 27. After taking a 3-0 lead, the Trojans held off a furious Edina rally in the final moments. Edina finally broke through with goals from Steven Fogarty and Louie Nanne in the last four minutes. Michael Sit assisted on both goals. Fogarty and Nanne each had an assist. Tanner Jensen and Marc Richards had first-period goals for the Trojans, and Mario Lucia scored what proved to be the winning goal on a power play at 11:07 of the third period. Both goalies played well. Returning starter Connor Girard of Edina stopped 28 of 31 shots. Wayzata’s Andrew McIntyre stopped 22 of 24 shots. It was a hard-hitting game with Edina taking seven penalties and Wayzata six. “Wayzata has real good top-end talent,” said Edina head coach Curt Giles. “And they also have solid second and third lines, a good defense and good goaltending.” Giles said Edina’s performance improved as the game went on. “We finally got some time in the offensive zone the second part of the game,” he said. Did Giles like playing a team like Wayzata early in the season? “Coming out of the chute, I think it does help to play a team like Wayzata,” he said. “It is hard to tell where you stand until you get out there in a game with a quality opponent, real goals and real penalties.”

This weekend at Braemar Arena, the Edina girls hockey team will have a chance to see how it stacks up against two state contenders, Roseau and Warroad. The Hornets will play Roseau at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at Braemar Arena. At 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, they will play Warroad, also at Braemar. It doesn’t get any easier from there. At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, the Hornets will face off with Roseville at Roseville Ice Arena in a rematch of last year’s state championship game.

Edina won easily in its semifinal Friday night, beating Buffalo 6-1. Nick Leer and Ben Walker scored two goals each while Nanne and Fogarty also had goals. Alex Nelson was the winner in goal with 11 saves. Wayzata edged Maple Grove 3-2 with goals by Bryan Tabery, D.J. Jones and Tyler Klein. Twenty-three saves gave McIntyre the victory in goal.

Path from pool to rink Hopkins High athletes Brita Skalbeck and Jane Dupay missed the first two games of the girls hockey season because they were competing in the state swimming meet Nov. 19-20. Skalbeck won All-State honors with a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. “We are happy to get them back this week,” said Hopkins girls hockey coach Vin Paolucci.

Gaard, Bryan ranked Former Edina High tennis players Megan Gaard and Maria Bryan are among the leaders on the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s team. In the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings for the 2011 season, Gaard is ranked fourth in the nation among small-college singles players and Bryan is ranked ninth. Both Edina players are also ranked in the national top 10 in doubles. Gaard and her partner, Marianne Barau, are third. Bryan and her partner, Sam Frank, are fourth.

Larson scores 21 TDs Eden Prairie High junior halfback Andrew Larson is the Lake Conference scoring champion for 2010. Larson scored 21 touchdowns during the Eagles’ 9-2 season. In addition to showing his nose for the goal line, Larson was the workhorse of the Eden Prairie backfield. He piled up 1,689 yards on 215 carries, an average of 7.9 yards per carry. No wonder Eagle fans are touting Larson as a top contender for the Mr. Football Award in 2011. – Compiled by John Sherman

Reber FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ty standouts Steven Fogarty, Ben Ostlie and Michael Sit. While she was competing in youth hockey, Reber watched her brothers, Josh and Matt, play varsity hockey at Edina High. “My brothers and my dad [Bill] taught me a lot about hockey,” she said. “I loved going to watch Josh and Matt play and imagined being like them someday.” Now she knows what that’s like. Reber’s father and mother [Darcy] come to every Hornet girls game, home and away. “My parents have given me amazing support throughout my career,” said Reber. “I can’t thank my family enough.” The other person who has had a major impact on Reber’s career is Slominski, a former Ms. Hockey during her playing days at Burnsville High. “Laura is definitely a role model for me,” said Reber. “I couldn’t ask for a better coach. During the recruiting process, she was a great support system – always there for me.”

Reber, who earns straight A’s in the classroom, said she is thankful to have had the opportunity to represent Edina High in sports. In addition to playing on the hockey team for the last four years, she emerged as one of the standouts on the girls soccer team. With her recruiting decision behind her, Reber looks forward to completing her senior year and moving on to the Ivy League. Asked what she plans to study in college, she said, “I’m not quite sure … actually, I am very undecided. I am more the math and science type than anything else. I hope to fall into something that I will love to study.”

Girls volleyball: Hands down, the two best teams in the state were Lakeville North and Wayzata. North was the champion, Wayzata was second. Julia Doyle of Wayzata is as good a player as you’ll see in this part of the country. So there you have it. In the eight fall sports, Lake teams won six state titles and South Suburban Conference teams won two.

Potential members As much as I love the Lake Conference, it’s obvious that a five-team league won’t play long-term. The Lake Conference needs at least one member, but who could it be? Looking two to three years ahead, there’s no one on the horizon. Chaska could have been a candidate, but then Chaska split and Chanhassen High School opened. Blaine is a school capable of competing with the Lake teams in most sports, but it’s located on the other end of town. Armstrong? We’ve already tried that. Cooper? Too small and not competitive in some of the major sports like hockey. Osseo and Maple Grove? They want no part of this. Cretin-Derham Hall? Big enough, good enough, but located on the wrong side of town.

St. Thomas Academy? Now there’s an idea, but the Cadets don’t have girls sports. Stillwater? Too close to Wisconsin, too far from here. Benilde-St. Margaret’s? Only if it adds another wing. Holy Angels? Same thing.

Hot on the trail Edina High will have a shot at more state championships this winter. I like the Hornets’ chances in girls hockey even though they lost leading scorer Corinne Buie to Providence College. The Hornet boys swimming and diving team has 55 years of coaching experience with Art Downey at the helm. Can you remember the last time Edina didn’t contend for the state title? Max Cartwright and Mike Gratz are potential state champs. Alpine skiing is another traditionally strong sport for the Hornets, so we might find some hardware at the bottom of the hill. Boys hockey is coming off a state championship season, the first of coach Curt Giles’ 11-year Edina career. There is so much parity in boys hockey that almost nothing is predictable. But one thing I do know is that Edina will play tough defense. Ben Walker, Michael Sit and Steven Fogarty are prime-time players.

SHORTS Rankings favor Edina Let’s Play Hockey magazine has published its first state rankings for the 2010-11 season. At the youth levels Edina teams are well represented. The Edina Bantam A team is No. 2 in the state behind Burnsville. Edina’s Bantam B1 White team is No. 1 in the rankings along with the Edina Pee Wee A squad. The Edina Green girls team is first in the 14-and-under A girls hockey rankings, while Edina is third in the 12-andunder A rankings.
