Residents say constant house construction disruptive BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Janet Skalicky said her Edina backyard on Minnehaha Creek used to be tranquil. But constant construction has changed Halifax Lane in recent years. “It’s basically a nightmare,” said Skalicky. “Our quality of life has really diminished. We can’t open our windows. We can’t enjoy our patio. We can’t entertain.” She said four houses have been torn down and rebuilt on the block where her family has lived for nearly 15 years. When the noise finally ends each evening, her patio and windows are covered in dust. She said her children don’t get to sleep in like their classmates in summer, and during the school

City council turns down temporary sidewalk $90,000 project for Valley View Road will not move forward BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The city of Edina won’t build a temporary sidewalk along a windy part of Valley View Road. The Edina City Council unanimously rejected plans Tuesday, July 5, to add a raised asphalt walkway on the north side of Valley View Road from McCauley Trail to Braemar Boulevard and Hilary Lane Assistant City Engineer Jack Sullivan said the proposed sidewalk stemmed from a 2004 request from the neighborhood. “This project actually has quite a long history,” he said. Rather than move forward with a standalone sidewalk project at the time, it was determined the entire segment of road should be reconstructed to fix alignment and other issues,
Sullivan said. Valley View Road was put on capital improvement program for reconstruction this summer. However, the city’s annual funding for repairs on state aid roads was more than accounted for with its $1.4 million share of the accelerated interchange project at Highway 169 and Interstate 494. The $90,000 temporary sidewalk, the first of its kind in the city, would be covered by the public works maintenance budget. There would be no cost to residents. It would stay in place for an estimated two to six years until the full project could be funded, Sullivan said. Adjacent homeowners would pay for 20 percent of improvements in the full state aid project, per city policy. The segment of road handles about 2,400 trips a day, which exceeds the approximately 700-trip minimum for installing sidewalks in the city, Sullivan said. Council members and many residents said a temporary sidewalk is not cost-effective. A petition against the proposal signed by approximately 68

people was submitted to the city before the meeting. Neighbor Jill Benner said the temporary sidewalk was much different than what was requested in 2004. That sidewalk would have been on the opposite side of the street and would have provided access to Courtney Fields at Braemear Park. Others pointed out that children in the area typically do not walk to school. “It’s the sidewalk that goes nowhere,” said resident Wayne Alexander. “It makes no sense. Is it the best way to spend our money – a sidewalk that will only be there for two years to six years? The money just seems so wasted.” Public Works Director Wayne Houle said the suggestion is “about the best we can do given the economic situation that we have with our state aid dollars.” He said the city is still receiving pressure to build the sidewalk, so it was brought forward to allow council and residents to weigh in. “Could we use the money elsewhere in the city? Absolutely. Right now,

we’re fighting potholes after this last winter. We could use that $90,000 to do thin overlays on roadways we don’t have on our reconstruction map,” he said. Mayor Jim Hovland said while sidewalks are important to the city, and to attracting young families, there are other visibility issues along the road that should be addressed. “Over the years I’ve visited the folks in that neighborhood and they tell me that their biggest safety concern isn’t somebody walking in the street and having to worry about cars coming down Valley View,” he aid. “The problem is at McCauley Trail and Valley View, there’s a concern over whether people will actually stop at that stop sign.” Resident Dianne Plunkett Latham said she feels a sidewalk is necessary but vegetation, signage and traffic hazards must be fixed regardless of if a temporary or permanent sidewalk is constructed. She said a hedge and

Sidewalk FROM PREVIOUS PAGE other bushes at the intersection of Sally Lane and Valley View Road are planted in the city right of way and are difficult to see around when entering the street. “This is an accident waiting to happen,” she said. Currently, city code prohibits landscaping in the right of way and permits the city to have such nuisances removed after a seven-day written notice and then assess the homeowner for the cost. Councilmember Josh Sprague said the city is not enforcing this rule and should come up with practices to determine if there should be exceptions and when. The council directed staff to look into the issue. Sprague said he also did not support the temporary sidewalk because he did not want to set a precedent for filling temporary infrastructure requests when there is not a pressing need.

Harlan Hanson, construction division manager for the county transportation department, said initially he planned to open bids for the project in mid-July, but is no longer sure when that will happen. “We’re in limbo,” he said. “We need the MnDOT civil rights office to approve some of the subcontracting, Equal Employment Opportunity and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises requirements.” The project, which would include repairing and replacing concrete panels in the approximately 2-mile stretch, is covered by $480,000 in federal funds and $220,000 in County State Aid funds. part of $95 million total given to MnDOT. The county transportation department identified France Avenue South as a segment of concrete pavement that could see a significant extension in useful life with rehabilitation. In addition to concrete repair, Hanson said the project would involve resealing of joints on the entire road segment. He anticipates one lane to be closed in each direction for the majority of the project, but at times, France Avenue South would be limited to one lane in each direction. He estimates the work would take three months to complete. “If the state comes back to work and we can get the necessary approvals, we could possibly start it yet this year,” Hanson said.

Legitimacy of luring incident called into question The legitimacy of a possible child-luring attempt reported last week in Edina is being questioned. Edina police officers responded 3:56 p.m. Thursday, June 30, to the area of 59th Street and Kellogg Avenue. A 12year-old girl reported that a white van drove next to her while she was walking and the occupants asked her if she would like some gum, according to the city. The city released information about the incident by press release and City Extra email the following afternoon, Friday, July 1. When asked why there was not a more immediate effort to inform the neighborhood Edina Communications Director Jennifer Bennerotte said “the legitimacy of the claim was questioned.” “In this case the police department was not sure enough of the facts that they wanted to get out a more urgent A 17-year-old juvenile, 18-year-old Edina man and 18-year-old Edina woman were arrested for possession of

According to the city’s press release, the girl fled the area and reported the incident to a trusted adult. The alleged incident took place at approximately 3:36 p.m., about 20 minutes before police were alerted. The vehicle was described as a white van with no windows or writings. The occupants were described as two Hispanic males, 18 to 20 years of age, who appeared to be under the influence. The case is still under investigation. As of Monday, July 11, Edina police spokesperson Molly Anderson said there were no updates to report and the department would not have a statement on the incident. What are you doing to MY state park? Editor’s note: I’m not going to deal with the nitty-gritty of the state shutdown. Mostly, because politics are a tricky animal, and I won’t pretend I have any sort of solution for the current predicament. There are other related issues, however, that really get my goat and need addressing. I’m bummed about the Minnesota state shutdown. Mostly bummed because it means my favorite summer activity — heading to William O’Brien State Park in Marineon-St. Croix, Minn. — isn’t possible at the moment. But I’m particularly upset because I had a sneaking suspicion the

shutdown and subsequent closure of the parks would leave a gaping hole wherein low-life vandals could step in and harm something important to me as a nature enthusiast and Minnesotan. In case you didn’t hear, numerous media outlets are reporting extensive vandalism at Afton State Park, damage to Department of Natural Resources facilities in Grand
Marais and other issues at parks across the state. Absolutely senseless and pointless acts that served only to ruin a shared natural resource. I love state parks. I feel at home in them so it’s tough to avoid the “get-off-my-lawnyou-kids” impulse here. Setting aside, for a moment, the fact that as a state resource, the parks are funded at last partially through tax dollars making it silly for Hoodlum A to destroy public property that Hoodlum A (assuming he pays taxes) would have to help fund to repair, the main issue to me is the idea that the minute some-
one isn’t watching it’s somehow permissible to forget all societal mores and act like yahoos. Public property, be it a state park or an interstate highway, exists as a service we provide ourselves. We, the taxpayers, fund these public facilities with the common goal of all being able to access the outdoors or drive across the country. We, the taxpayers, are responsible for responsible use of such facilities. It’s a sad day when the minute our collective backs (in the form of park personnel) are turned some people feel the need or desire to rampage through our mutual property.
Letters to the editor: We really do love them The primary reason I and my coworkers write personal columns (they’re not editorials) for this page is to encourage readers to respond. It’s not easy. It seems no matter how outlandish we get, the feedback is minimal. Sometimes the responses we do get are bizarre. Generally the reactions fall into two categories. The first is totally disheartening. You research and write your guts out about a topic of interest and receive an email that says “in paragraph six you used ‘upon’ instead of ‘on.’ Is English your native language? Who proofreads this rag?” Yikes. No mention of what the writer might have thought about the topic. Just kvetching. Riding high in April, shot down in May. That’s life, I supposed. The second most common response tends to take the “who cares about your opinion” approach. Mind you, these writers never bother to tell us their opinion, they simply want us to
PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor
know that we are not entitled to ours. For instance, a column I wrote recently about the bane of fireworks drew a one-sentence response from an individual who accused me of advocating a “nanny state.” That’s a term used to try to put writers who believe sometimes people need to be told what to do in their place. The place is usually under the jackboot of the person using the term. Actually, my plea to ban fireworks had nothing to do with the nanny state. You see, idiots who abuse fireworks cause buildings to burn down. Each time one catches fire, my tax dollars or yours (depending on where you live) are expended to
pay salaries for firefighters. Taxpayer-funded police and fire departments both got involved in Fargo over the July 4 holiday when a man was struck and killed by a mortarstyle firework. So my column was more of a plea to eliminate one more thing taxpayers have to support with their hard-earned dollars. Quite different from the idea of a nanny state. Heck, it’s almost libertarian. What is it that stops you from expressing your viewpoint on this page? We do everything possible to make it simple for readers to write letters to the editor. We’ve tossed most of the rules out the window to allow more exchanges of opinions. We are thankful to the letterwriters who do participate, but many of them fall into the “endless political campaigning” category. Frankly, those letters leave me personally wanting to retch. Which proves that there is
no litmus test per se for letters to the editor. I’ll swallow hard and place them on a page, no matter the topic. We do ask that you write within the bounds of good taste and keep your thoughts short and succinct. Those of us who write these columns try to keep it short and sweet because we know readers have busy lives and don’t want to spend half a day reading an opinion column. You can use the electronic form for letters found on our website or you can simply email your letter. Written and typed submissions are also welcome, although both require they be keyed into our system, which can delay publication. We will continue to try to strike a nerve with our columns and hopefully one day you’ll read something that convinces you to either agree or disagree strongly enough to write in. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

CITY NOTES City names new assistant manager Karen Kurt has accepted an offer to become Edina’s new assistant city manager. Kurt is currently the human resources and support services manager for the city of Eden Prairie, where she has worked since 2002. Prior to her position in Eden Prairie, Kurt held human resources leadership positions with Minnesota Technology, Inc., VERITAS Software and the city of Roseville. Kurt will replace former Assistant City Manager Heather Worthington, who left in October 2010 to accept the position of deputy county administrator for Ramsey County. The Brimeyer Fursman consulting group led the initial search for the position, for which 130 people applied. “Karen has exactly the right skill set that I was looking for in an assistant city manager,” said City Manager Scott Neal, who worked with her for eight year as Eden Prairie city manager. “She is very bright. She knows how to create and implement a performance-based, customer-centered work culture in a local government organization. That’s what we need here.” Among the initial goals for Kurt are to develop an orientation and continuing education program for the members of the city’s advisory boards and commissions, develop a new organizational performance measurement system and to improve the city’s systems for collecting and using survey data and management information in
the city’s policy-making processes. Kurt will begin work Monday, Aug. 1.
City hires hires new human resources director Lisa Schaefer has accepted an offer to become the city of Edina’s new human resources director. She was selected from an initial pool of 80 applicants. Schaefer is currently the human resources manager for the League of Minnesota Cities, where she has worked since 2006. Prior to joining the league, she was the senior human resources generalist for the city of Eden Prairie from 1998 to 2006. “From her perspective at the league, she’s seen the best and the worst in human resources management from around our state,” City Manager Scott Neal said. “I am looking forward to her bringing that depth of experience and intellect into our organization. She will do great things for us here.” The human resources director position will replace the assistant to the city manager position. Current Assistant to the City Manager Ceil Smith will retire in November. Initial goals of the position are to reexamine the city’s employee classification and compensation systems, modernize the employee payroll and time-reporting systems and review the employee performance measurement and management systems. Schaefer will begin her new duties Monday, Aug. 15.

Construction FROM PAGE 1 year, sometimes wear noise-canceling headphones so they can concentrate on homework. “There are always construction vehicles parked on either side of my driveway, so it’s hard to back out and see traffic,” she said. Then there’s the music, cigarette smoke and profanity from workers that sometimes wafts into her yard. Skalicky said her problem is not the homebuilding itself. She said some contractors take great care to work with and be respectful of neighbors. Those who do not, but still operate within city code, are the problem, she said. In letters to the city this spring, she asked the city to set stricter rules that would allow current residents to enjoy the quality of life that brought them to Edina to begin with. “Why am I unable to enjoy my home because of the rights of a builder? Who is looking out for my rights as a citizen of Edina?” she wrote. The Edina City Council directed staff to take up the issue during discussion at its Tuesday, June 21, meeting. Even as the housing industry has a
taken a hit over the past few years, construction continues in Edina’s strong market. Council members said they frequently hear complaints about building activity. City Manager Scott Neal said the proposed construction management plan to address the issue would be like a code of conduct for contractors. “A contractor can be completely compliant with all of our construction regulations and still disrupt the peace in a neighborhood,” Neal said. “That’s what we’re trying to get at.” Councilmember Josh Sprague said the city needs a document setting expectations for construction sites and also to show residents there are plans in place to deal with potential nuisances. “We’ve got a lot of correspondence on this since I’ve been on the council, which isn’t very long,” said Sprague, who was elected last November. Councilmember Joni Bennett said she’d also like to see the rules and expectations better defined. “I’m concerned about the issue as well, as I think we all are,” she said. City Planner Cary Teague said a draft version of the construction management plan distributed to council members before the Tuesday, July 5, meeting is based on a document used in the city of
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Minnetonka. In Minnetonka, where Teague was principal planner before coming to Edina, a construction management plan is approved as part of each development proposal and enforced by the planning department’s environmental staff, he said. Teague said the issues he hears most often about in Edina are parking and when construction work begins in the morning. Currently, a section of city code regulating noise limits construction activity involving any power equipment audible beyond the property line to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends and most holidays. Teague said the construction management plan would bring parts of existing code affecting building “all into one place rather than piecemeal through the code.” Teague said the Edina City Council is slated to discuss the draft at a work session in August before taking the matter up at a regular meeting. He said there are still several areas to consider, like who would be responsible for enforcement in Edina. In the draft, developers and contractors would specify their estimated construction start date, hours of operation, parking arrangements and routes work-
ers will use to travel to the site in the plan. The plan would also require the builder to have a contract with a street sweeper for routine cleanups, institute a watering program for dust control, fence vegetation for protection during grading and construction, repair damage to public streets or adjacent properties, maintain erosion and sediment control, install rock entrance pads or similar surfaces where vehicles enter or exit the site, contain construction debris on-site with regularly scheduled removal service, and receive materials on an as-needed basis to keep large stockpiles at a minimum. Sprague said he’d also like to see the city create a frequently asked questions sheet for residents so they are aware of the rules and know who to contact at the city with specific concerns. “Managing a building site involves the health, planning, public works, police and building departments,” Sprague said of the current situation. Ecotour FROM PAGE 1 den. Campbell said growing organically without harsh chemical pesticides and herbicides has its challenges, but is the only thing that makes sense to him. “It’s a little more work – hard labor and hard weeding – but it’s what I enjoy doing,” Campbell said. His garden will be featured on the Edina Energy and Environment Commission’s first Edina Eco Yard and Garden Tour Sunday afternoon, July 31. The tour will showcase five Edina homes with examples of sustainability including
organic growing, drip irrigation, rainwater capture systems and solar panels. Tour organizer Dianne Plunkett Latham, who chairs the Edina Energy and Environment Commission and the Edina Garden Council biennial tours, said it’d be more than pretty plants. “The Energy and
Environment Commission wanted to show residents that they could have beautiful yet eco-friendly yards. There are many things they can do to save on energy and water,” said Latham, who’s home is one of the five on tour. Campbell said while his education is in art, he’s always enjoyed gardening. When he

moved to his north Edina home more than 20 years ago, he planted a small plot of herbs, salad greens and tomatoes to sell to local restaurants. For several years in the 1990s, he apprenticed at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and then worked at a large organic farm and produce importer in the state. Ecotour FROM PAGE 17 house in 2000, he decided it was time to put down his roots. “All these years I’d been living like I was going to sell my house,” he said. “I decided to come back and reclaim it.” Slowly he began to replace the grass lawn with a cover of hostas and other perennials. He now has more than 550 varieties of the shade-loving plant. As trees surrounding his yard succumbed to storms and disease, he added fruit trees. His original garden plot of about 25-by-30-feet has expanded to nearly every part of the property. With the exception of the hostas, which Campbell said fulfill his artistic side with their varied texture, color, shape and size, now nearly everything he grows is edible. “It has to have a purpose for me,” he said. Among his crop are nine varieties of apples, three varieties of apricots, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, lemon, figs, rhubarb, grapes, kiwi, currents, pomegranate, raspberries, chokeberries, cranberries, seaberries

Some of his herbs include kaffir lime, lemon verbena, hops and cilantro. He also grows vegetables like beets and kale. Campbell, chef at Beaujo’s Wine Bar & Bistro in Edina, said there’s no real science to his method, other than an environmentally friendly bent. For the most part it’s trial and error. When a problem appears, he finds a way to deal with it that does not use chemicals that kill beneficial insects and microorganisms in the soil. “I let weeds grow up if they’re useful,” said Campbell, who keeps around stinging nettles, which are good for his compost bin, and mullein, which has medicinal uses. To fight pests like apple maggots, he’s sprayed some of his trees with a
natural product containing kaolin clay – often used in cosmetics – they won’t penetrate. Each apple bud on another tree is wrapped with nylon stockings for the same effect. He uses a liquid repellant made from biodegradable rotted egg whites around the perimeter of his yard to keep hungry deer away. He said he’d also like to begin integrated pest management. Ladybugs and praying mantis can be released to combat more destructive insects. Campbell already has one kind of creepy-crawly on his side. For the last 10 years he’s practiced vermiculture. He brings kitchen waste home from work and feeds it to worms stored in a special bin in his basement. Their castings make for nitrogen-rich soil. Latham said the tour of Campbell’s home will include a vermiculture demonstration, as well as display of eco-friendly tools such as an electric mower and electric weed whip with information available from the Home Energy Squad. Each of the commission’s five working groups is assigned to a tour site to show residents how to put the ideas on display into practice. Latham said the ECOTOUR: TO NEXT PAGE

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to May 31st receive $100 off when you mention this article.

The biggest week of the Minnesota golf season begins Monday, July 18, when the state’s top amateurs tee it up in White Bear Lake. The Minnesota Golf Association Amateur Championship runs through Wednesday, July 20, at White Bear Yacht Club. On Friday, July 22, the Minnesota State Open, which brings together the state’s best professionals and amateurs, starts at Rush Creek in Maple Grove. Among players expected to compete in the MGA Amateur is Donald Constable, a former Minnetonka High School and University of Minnesota player who finished second in last year’s tournament at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton. Tom Hoge, who won the MGA Amateur the last two years, will not be back to defend his title because he turned professional this spring. Ryan Peterson of Eagan, who recently completed his college golf eligibility at Colorado State, finished third in last year’s tournament. Peterson won the MGA Players’ Championship, a matchplay event, last month in Brainerd. Former Wayzata High School and current University of Northern Iowa player Kyle Beversdorf also will be in the MGA Amateur. Beversdorf qualified for the 2011 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and reached the match-play stage of the tournament. The oldest player in the field might be Edina’s Richard Blooston, who made it into the tournament through a June 22 qualifier at Meadowbrook Golf Course. Blooston first played in the GOLF: TO PAGE 24

When Dean has ball, good things happen BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS When Edina American Legion baseball coach Nick Kennedy had to choose his first-game starter for the Gopher Classic last weekend, there was no hesitation. He handed the ball to his ace, James Dean. Dean responded by throwing four innings of one-hit ball as Edina drilled Sioux Falls (S.D.) West 12-0. Matt Hopfner
came out of the bullpen to finish the shutout in the fifth inning as Edina won by the 10-run rule. Asked if he was honored to start the first game of the 66-team invitational, Dean said, “it’s always an honor when they hand me the ball.” Dean’s fastball was his meal ticket. Bloomington will be the focal point of slowpitch softball enthusiasts July 14-17. The 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Tournament will be bigger and better than ever according to director Jeff Barnes. The Bloomington native has either played in or managed the mid-summer softball extravaganza for much of the past 53 years. This edition of the Firemen’s tourney has attracted 160 men’s, women’s and co-rec teams from all over the state and country. More than 20,000 fans, players and tournament volunteers are expected to attend the four-day event headquartered at Valley View Park. “Our tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the state and the Upper Midwest,” said Barnes, who has directed the event since 1976. “There is a 300-team tournament headquartered in Bismarck, N.D. “But that tournament is spread out on fields over a regional area instead of being located like we are in one city -- Bloomington. Our tournament is a summer reunion for players and spectators. We have fans that actually fly in to the Twin Cities to attend our event each year.” The 160-team field includes Class A through Class D slowpitch softball teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada as well as SOFTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Edina girls pounce on opportunity to beat Waconia, 3-1 It was a perfect night for soccer at Braemar Park, and the Edina Under11 Classic 3 Flash made the most of it in a 3-1 victory over Waconia. At left, goalkeeper Rachel Davis of Edina gets her hands on a save. At right, Edina defender Grace Masuda (37) is set to take the ball away from a Waconia attacker on a play in the corner. Edina’s defense was the key to the victory. On an adjacent field the same night, Edina gained another Under-11 soccer win. The Edina Strikers Classic 2 boys team built an early lead and held on to defeat Tonka United 5-4. (Photos by John Sherman • Sun Newspapers)
SHORTS
Softball FROM PREVIOUS PAGE squads from the across the Twin Cities metro area and outstate Minnesota. Many tournament participants and teams represent Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Richfield, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Burnsville, Rosemount, Apple Valley and Lakeville. Two all-star charity games kick off the Firemen’s tournament Thursday, July 14, at Valley View Park in Bloomington. The opening all-star match-up pits
the Bloomington Police against the Bloomington Firefighters at 6:30 p.m. on Red Haddox Field. The Bloomington Police won last year’s allstar game. “Many teams use our tournament to prepare for post-season state and national competition,” said Barnes. “We work hard to maintain competitive balance in each of our brackets. “We have a good mixture of experienced and young teams. And many of those younger squads want to get into our competitive upper brackets.” All proceeds from the Firemen’s tournament are donated to youth organizations that provide volunteer assistance during the four-day event.

Dean FROM PAGE 22 worked up high a few times when he was ahead in the count. At the end of the game, his season record was 4-0. “My changeup has been effective this year, but tonight I stuck mostly with the fastball,” Dean said. “I had great defense behind me. Joe Spellman and Nick Leer were out there turning double plays, and that always helps a pitcher.” Spellman, who plays shortstop, and Leer, who plays second, turned two ground-ball double plays to wipe out potential Sioux Falls threats. While he liked the defense, Dean was equally impressed with Edina’s hitting. “It’s so much easier to pitch when the bats are behind you,” he said. Edina pounded out 13 hits, including three by Nick Omodt. “If we play our game, we can put a

lot of runs on the board,” said Kennedy, who is in his first season as Edina’s head coach. “We came into tonight’s game hitting .369 as a team. Nick Denn is the leader at .532 and Mark Handberg is hitting .475. “I really like the way they’re hitting. Denn is in the four hole and usually finds the right pitch to hit. I like the way Handberg hits down on the ball. Even his ground balls are hit hard.” Dean is part of a deep Edina pitching staff that also includes Handberg, Hopfner, Danny Baer, John Connell, Alex Lampert, Mitch Larson, Adam Nash and Nick Remes. With so many on the staff, Dean knows he will not be over-used. Dean, who already has a year of college ball under his belt, has transferred from a junior college in Kansas to Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. He’s excited about the change. “Bethany has a solid program, and it’s a lot closer to home,” he said. “I am really looking forward to going to school there.”
Golf FROM PAGE 22 MGA Amateur in 1963. The field of 156 will try to figure out the nuances of White Bear Yacht Club, designed in the early 20th century by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross. While some might consider it short by today’s standards at 6,471 yards, undulating fairways, blind shots and tricky greens are several features that could confound players. MGA tournament director Doug Hoffmann said he anticipates some under-par scores but still expects the course to challenge players who routinely hit 300-yard drives. “This course is a long 6,400 yards,” Hoffmann said at an MGA media event last week. “And I expect to take advantage of some hole locations that are available to me. But if someone goes out, plays well and shoots a low number, great.” Rush Creek, which will be host of the Minnesota State Open for the first time, has plenty of length. It is expected to play at more
than 7,200 yards for the tournament. A number of players who have been on the PGA Tour or Champions Tour also have won the Minnesota State Open, including Tom Lehman, John Harris, Mike Morley, Joel Goldstrand, Ty Armstrong and Jon Chaffee. Harris, who continues to compete on the Champions Tour, has entered the state open. Shorewood resident Mario Tiziani, who has competed on the PGA Tour, also is in the tournament. Edinburgh USA head professional Don Berry is a two-time Minnesota State Open champion. He is scheduled to play this year, as is Edinburgh USA’s director of instruction, Adam Gulli. Also in the tournament is Bloomington native Jim Sorenson, who won the 1985 U.S. Public Links and the 1986 Minnesota State Open. Sorenson isn’t playing many tournaments these days but is still a prominent figure in the game. If you see a television infomercial for a golf-training device, chances are it was made by a company Sorenson founded – Momentus Golf in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
