New Edina senior facility must move noisy air unit Relocation could be delayed to fall due to heat BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A new senior housing facility in Edina is feeling the heat over its large air conditioning unit. After neighbors began to complain about a 12-foot-tall chiller at Ebenezer’s York Gardens, 3451 Parklawn Ave., city staff discovered it was not included in the approved site or building permit plans and exceeds state noise regulations. Project representatives appeared before the Edina Planning Commission Wednesday, June 29, to request a site plan amendment to move it to the other side of the assisted living and memory care center – an estimated $86,000 cost. “This is an embarrassment for you,” as well as city staff and officials, Commission Chair Floyd Grabiel said. “We need to make sure in the future that when we have final site plan reviews everything that’s going be part of that site is on the site plan review, because we don’t want to do this again.” According to City Planner Cary Teague, the unit on the west side of the building is approximately 17 feet from its lot line along Edinborough Way. By city definition, the unit is considered an accesAIR: TO PAGE 18

Edina has a new way to take risk out of real estate development. A voluntary sketch plan review process added this winter to the zoning code allows potential applicants to air building proposals before submitting formal plans. Mayor Jim Hovland said developers and architects have invested thousands of dollars on plans to have them dismissed by decision-makers in the past. “What we tried to do is design a process where they can come in and get kind of an initial feel from both the planning commission and the [city] council to see if this idea has legs,” Hovland said at the Tuesday, June 21, Edina City Council meeting.
All comments are considered advisory and are not binding on the developer’s request. While formal site plan applications require everything from building design to real engineering work, grading and draining plans, a sketch plan is more conceptual. City code states “applicants are encouraged to present a sketch plan to the planner prior to filling out a formal application.” The proposal must be drawn to scale, show existing developments and other conditions nearby, tentative access and parking plans, suggested amenities like open space and landscaping, and proposed sewer, water and storm drainage. There must also be a statement about density. The city council reviewed it’s second such sketch plan at the meeting in June. “Even thought it’s a nice concept, I just have too much discomfort to see it happen,” Hovland told applicant Jeff SKETCH PLAN: TO NEXT PAGE

Sketch Plan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Schoenwetter with JMS Custom Homes. “Knowing the burden of a comp plan change requires a fourfifths vote, I just don’t see it happening.” Schoenwetter was proposing to tear down two existing single-family homes at 5020 and 5024 Indianola Ave. near 50th and France. Using a portion of the adjacent Edina Covenant Church parking lot, he wanted to build seven detached homes over an underground garage on the 26,730-squarefoot space. Schoenwetter described the Bishop’s Walk development as a unique single-family setting in the city. Each home on the common lot would be custom-designed and no larger than 2,200 square feet with appeal to young professionals and empty nesters alike. “This isn’t a great big condo project,” he said. “It’s in fact a shoe box project.” The proposed density was 11 units per acre, which would require a comprehensive plan amendment from low-
density residential, which allows up to four units per acre, to medium-density residential. It also needed rezoning from R-1 single dwelling unit district to PRD planned residential district. The properties surrounding the site on all sides are also zoned R-1. Residents in the audience wore stickers printed with R-1 in support of keeping it that way. Schoenwetter said he believed the rezoning from R-1 to allow for his project would provide a smooth transition from businesses and condos at 50th and France westward toward traditional neighborhoods. Councilmember Josh Sprague said he liked the small footprint, walkability and sustainability of the proposed project, but said it was the wrong location for it. “I don’t see this as transitional zoning. I see this as density creep,” he said. “That’s the beauty of sketch plan review. We get feedback early and we get to understand what may or may not be possible,” Schoenwetter said after hearing council comments. A call to Schoenwetter following the meeting was not immediately returned. In a mature city like Edina, most projects now involve redevelopment.

City Planner Cary Teague said it makes projects difficult because surrounding property owners expect a certain use. In addition to saving developers time and money, sketch plan review can also result in an overall better project for neighbors and the city. When a developer hasn’t already invested a lot in a specific plan, they “do come into a sketch plan review with more flexibility,” he said. Many metro cities use the sketch plan process. At the city council’s first-ever sketch plan review Tuesday, April 19, Ed Noonan of Noonan Construction proposed changes for his properties at 4528 and 4530 France Ave. He wants to tear down the existing Rapid Oil Change building, 4530 France Ave., and construct an addition above the underground garage that would match the adjoining 4528 France Ave. office building. The project would require rezoning of the two properties from planned commercial districts – PCD-1 for most retail and services and PCD-4 for specifically auto-related businesses – to PUD planned unit development. Some council members expressed concerns with the parking configuration. The new office building would be set back from France Avenue with park-
3
ing in the front. That does not follow the comprehensive plan’s direction toward maintaining streetscapes and walkability. The properties are also located in an area designated a “potential area of change” in the city’s 2008 comprehensive plan. Under the plan, a development proposal or rezoning within a potential area of change requires a small area plan study, though its up to the city council to initiate one. Council members indicated a sketch plan meeting could be an alternative in this case, and suggested Noonan meet with neighbors. A call to Noonan for an update on his project was not immediately returned. Teague said he believed Noonan planned to make slight modifications and then hold a neighborhood meeting for more feedback before coming back to the council.

A thick stack of business cards at Beaver’s Pond Press detail Edina entrepreneur Milt “Beaver” Adams’ endeavors over the years. He was a professional speaker, ink manufacturer and business directory printer before finding his passion in self-publishing 13 years ago – a time when most of his contemporaries were retired. Now 83, Adams is almost ready to hang up his hat. He recently sold his remaining interest in the Edina-based publishing company to Tom Kerber, who joined in 2007 as chief publishing executive. Adams will remain on as Beaver’s Pond Press founder and mentoring publisher. He plans to attend weekly staff meetings, recruit and advise writers. Under his leadership, the company has helped authors
publish more than 500 books, and now averages about 75 books per year. “I’ll spend time with any stranger who wants to talk about self-publishing,” Adams said. “The authors are fascinating. They come from everywhere and from all sorts of backgrounds. They’ve got a dream and drive to make it happen.” Adams followed his own heart when he left his “boring” job in corporate America in 1970. For decades he was self-employed. He started Beaver’s Pond Press in 1998. At the time, there were many obstacles in selfpublishing, from the high cost of printing to getting copies on the shelves at bookstores and libraries. “That was before there was any easy way for an author to get their book published if they were not smiled upon by the royalty presses,” like big names Random House and Penguin, said Kerber of Chaska. “By definition, [if it’s not from them] it’s garbage. It’s vanity press.” PRESS: TO NEXT PAGE

Press FROM PREVIOUS PAGE In the last few years, those roadblocks have disappeared. Companies such as Amazon.com offer print-on-demand for writers, where individual copies of books can be produced as they’re ordered online. Kerber said what sets Beaver’s Pond Press apart in the evolving publishing industry is its “authors-first environment” and quality product. Gordon Fredrickson of Lakeville, who has written and published several illustrated children’s books with Beaver’s Pond Press, said he initially struggled to find a publisher for the historically accurate but fun look at farming heritage in Minnesota. Fredrickson grew up a farm boy outside of Lakeville, and said while Adams came from Minneapolis, he did spend one summer in his teens milking cows and feeding chickens. “He saw in them what we saw in them and embraced it as something that had an audience out there. They’re fun for kids but they appeal to adults too because of their nostalgia,” Fredrickson said. He had already printed 10 books on his own, but because he hopes the books are

manuscripts and produce a sleek final product. Seven of Fredrickson’s 10 original manuscripts are now available in fullcolor, hardcover format. “Our books are as good as anything that
comes out of New York City,” Adams said. The author pays for the publishing and printing, but then owns 100 percent of the book and collects any money from its sale. Beaver’s Pond Press can also help with marketing and distribution. Fredrickson’s books are carried on Amazon.com, at Barnes & Noble stores and in local shops like Ben Franklin in Lakeville. Kerber said Beaver’s Pond Press isn’t as picky as the royalty publishers, but does not accept every author. They won’t touch some genres, like risqué romance novels. Books range from fiction and memoirs to history, motivational, coffee table, spiritual and cookbooks. Because of the close relationship during the process, most writers come from the upper Midwest, however, they have worked with the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame executive Jim Finks Sr., California resident Jim Finks Jr., who wrote “Colors: Pro Football Uniforms of the Past and Present,” Kerber said. The company’s most popular title to date is 2007 book “Minnesota North Stars and Memories with Lou Nanne” by Bob Showers. It sold 20,000 copies in its first year alone. “That book broke every record,” Kerber said. PRESS: TO PAGE 7

Mediation can help in tough decisions about aging parents Bridgette fell a few weeks ago and is now in rehabilitation. She insists she’ll return to her home, and with a little help, she’ll do fine on her own. She’s only 80 years young, can still drive and attend the church socials. She doesn’t want to become an obligation, but will not sell her house and move miles away from her neighborhood. Bridgette’s family is conflicted about the situation. Two of her four children insist that mom needs to move. They know the move is inevitable. They are concerned she will fall again. The nearby independent living apartments would allow her to drive and assure her safety. They think their siblings who live closest to her are too busy to provide the help she needs now. The siblings who live within 20 miles from home insist that mom’s preference be respected.
KATHLEEN KELSO Elder Mediation MN
They are convinced they can work out a schedule that the four of them could maintain – if the out-of-state sibling could fly home and provide respite twice a year. How might this family find a comfortable resolution and support Bridgette independence to the extent possible? This story may prompt recollection about difficult conversations you’ve had during a lifechanging event. As we age, we face challenges we haven’t planned for and that seem to paralyze us as we struggle to decide where and how we wish to live. A person does not
choose to compromise choice and independence. An aging parent may ask: • When is it time to move from my home? • How will my children understand what I need now? • How do I decide what to do at the end of life? Correspondingly, adult children often ask: • How do we convince dad that mom needs more than he can provide now that her memory is impaired? • How do we agree to a schedule that will work for all of us and help our parents? • How do we talk about end of life when we can’t agree on our parents’ level of independence today? These are common concerns that require thoughtful consideration before making lifechanging decisions. Unresolved conflict may delay care or treat-
ment, or a safe environment. When this happens, families could consider mediation to reach an agreement. Most important, mediation may help families maintain or restore relationships through shared decisions. How would mediation help you and your family? Clearly, it is preferable to address concerns before a crisis occurs. Again, few of us do this. To move forward, family mediation would simply help share concerns and reach workable decisions that support family relationships.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Improve air quality with easy steps To the editor: Although summer is arriving slowly, people are beginning to spend more time outdoors. The change of seasons makes the subject of air quality and reasonable actions people can take to improve it timely. Children, the elderly, people with asthma and athletes who exercise outdoors are hit particularly hard by increased levels of ozone, sulfur dioxide, fine particulate matter, carbon
monoxide, lead and mercury – pollutants generated by our cars, gas powered tools and outdoor fires. Higher levels of air pollution are correlated with greater incidence of cardiovascular risk factors and cancer. On muggy days, compromised air quality is actually visible – a haze builds up, making it difficult to see structures in the distance and also causing people to feel burning in their throats and suffer more asthma attacks. On these days, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issues air quality alerts and encourages

Cornelia Elementary moves closer to accessible playground BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN The sound of children playing on Cornelia Elementary School’s playground was temporarily replaced by the whirr of power tools and the thud of sledgehammers as the Edina school moved a step closer to a playground that will meet every student’s needs. Parents of Cornelia students and other volunteers from the community assisted in the demolition of the school’s 13-year-old playground Saturday, June 25.
As many as 30 volunteers wielded hand drills and sledge hammers as they dismantled the mostly wood and steel structure with the help of Edina-based remodeling firm M.A. Peterson, a company sponsoring the playground project. M.A. Peterson employees handled the more dangerous and technical aspects of the demolition, such as removing large caps from the playground’s towers. According to Cornelia Principal Chris Holden, the old playground will be replaced by one that will be more accessible to students with both physical and cognitive handicaps.

“It’s going to be more accessible than our current playground,” Holden said. The new playground will feature components that children with disabilities can access, including a Sway Fun Glider, a rocking cart that is wheelchair-accessible, a roller table and a sensory wall for students with autism and communications disorders. These components will be fun for all children using the playground, according to Holden. “Actually, any kid can play on them. It is accessible to everyone,” Holden said. “Just because something is geared toward a student with some physical challenges doesn’t
mean that someone else can’t use it too.” The surface of the school’s old playground posed challenges to students with special needs. The old surface was made up of small rocks known as pea gravel, which restricted access to the playground for students with wheelchairs or walkers. The new playground will feature a surface made of an engineered wood fiber. The wood fiber is cut in a way that allows small pieces to interlock, providing both cushion for the playground and better access for children with wheelchairs or walkers. PLAYGROUND: TO PAGE 16

Uniform drive focuses on blue Cub Scout version BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS More than 5,000 children join Cub Scouts each year in the Northern Star Council, the division of the Boy Scouts that serves the Twin Cities and beyond. That means a lot of the familiar blueshirt uniforms are needed to clothe all those green scouts. But not every scout’s family can afford a uniform. Enter Brooklyn Park-based Pilgrim Cleaners and its fourth annual Scouting for Uniforms campaign. The campaign, which runs during the month of July, seeks to collect donated uniforms from the public for distribution to scouts in need. Throughout the month of July all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations will have bins to accept donations of used scouting uniforms. Pilgrim Cleaners will remove patches if necessary, clean the uniforms and pass them on to the Northern Star Council for distribution. Scouting uniforms of all sizes and from all eras are needed, but this year the special focus is on Cub Scout uniforms. Kent York of the Northern Star Council says this year’s drive is focusing on Cub Scout uniforms because Cub Scouts is the entry point into the scouting program, and the Northern Star Council doesn’t want potential scouts not to join because they can’t afford a uniform.
In addition, boys in the Cub Scout age group (first- through third-grade) tend to grow quickly and often need a different size uniform each year. That may be the reason why Cub Scout uniforms have run out most quickly during past distributions. Uniform donations are especially important during these tough economic times. York said that in 2009 an independent research group determined that about 5,000 youth in Boy Scouts in the Twin Cities received free and reduced lunch at school. That indicated a high level of need. Bonnie Engler is the president of Pilgrim Cleaners. “There is a need,” she said. “When we started exploring this, we realized there were a lot of kids who would like to join the Boy Scouts and weren’t.” Engler started the uniform drive four years ago after hearing about a similar program happening in another part of the country. The Scouting for Uniforms campaign has met with success. “It’s grown every year,” she said. The first year the drive collected 350 uniforms. The second year it collected 560 and last year it collected 564. This year the goal is to collect 750 uniforms. “I think that’s a reachable goal,” Engler said. “We’re very fortunate here. We have a community that’s very willing UNIFORM: TO NEXT PAGE

Playground FROM PAGE 8 The June 25 demolition marks an important date for a project the Cornelia Elementary community has been planning for more than a year. The planning and fundraising needed to meet the playground project’s $175,000 goal was made possible by a collective effort from parents, teachers and local business sponsors, according to Cornelia Parent Teacher Organization member Jeff Carver. “Since we have a fairly large population of students with disabilities, we got a lot of good input from parents and special ed teachers, Carver said. “Different people stepped up with their unique skills and unique networks and contacts. It was really everyone contributing their own giftedness to help make this happen. Money to pay for the school’s new playground has come through a mix of fundraising, government grants and corporate sponsorship. In May 2010 Cornelia Elementary School was awarded a $60,000 grant by the Hennepin Youth Sports Program, an initiative funded by excess ballpark sales tax revenue. The school also raised money with a 5K run and a read-a-thon pledge drive. A $15,000 donation from the Jerstad Family Foundation was another key contri-

However, the biggest push toward making the new playground a reality has come from local businesses, including the Edina Orthodontic Associates; Cemstone, a company specializing in concrete and decorative stone; and M.A. Peterson, according to Holden.

The playground project offers local businesses a unique avenue to build good will within the Edina community. “Chris Holden and a colleague of his approached us and asked if we were interested in helping out with the project. We worked out all the details and said we’d be honored to help, said Dave Peterson, vice
president of M.A. Peterson. “The community has done so much for us over the years that it was just natural to go ahead and give back and show our appreciation for them supporting us for many, many years. M.A. Peterson is also contributing by recycling materials from the school’s old playground. Most of the metal from the structure will be recycled, while the wood will be repurposed and possibly made into benches for Cornelia Elementary, said Peterson. The school is about $10,000 away from its $175,000 goal and is still accepting donations, according to Holden. The school anticipates installation of the new playground to begin the week of July 12 and hopes to host a grand opening in mid-August. Potential plans for the grand opening include a ribbon cutting ceremony, music and a picnic in the park. Though Cornelia’s nearly 600 students will benefit from the new playground on a daily basis during recess, Holden hopes the new structure will serve the entire Edina community near the school. “It provides a focal point for this neighborhood, said Holden. “Families can come here and play for an hour or two, and parents can bring their kids down here. Grandparents can come down with their grandkids. It’s just a nice, healthy atmosphere and a fun activity for families to enjoy together.

Website FROM PAGE 1 help keep community members informed and city leaders make decisions. So far, the three topics being addressed in blog posts on the website are economic development at Southdale Center, the 2012 budget and the Grandview District small area planning process. During the hour-long live question-and-answer session Wednesday afternoon, Neal fielded questions about Southdale Center. About 20 people logged onto the chat, though not all made comments or posed questions. Items discussed included potential improvements by owner Simon Property Group Inc. the city’s hope to build a water treatment plant nearby and tax increment financing. A transcript is available at EdinaCitizenEngagement.org/ Southdale. Simon previously indicated to the city it would like to use the additional property tax revenue yielded by improvements at the site to help pay for the renovation. The Edina City Council has yet to hear a formal proposal and make a decision on tax increment financing. Neal said he expects Simon to submit a detailed construction plan to the city in the com-
Edina City Manager Scott Neal hosted a live online chat about Southdale Center Wednesday, June 29, on new city website EdinaCitizenEngagement.org. The site is aimed at getting community input on important, near-term issues. (Sun Newspapers image) ing weeks. At that time, he might also host a live webinar – the online equivalent of a face-to-face presentation with visual and audio components –
on the website. “I’m excited to see what [the website] will yield because I know Edina has a pretty active online community. People want
to interact that way,” Neal said. He said citizen engagement is important to the Edina City Council, and the website adds a new dimension to the conversation. It is not intended to replace actual meetings. The city paid about $2,500 for development of the site from the communications budget, Neal said. “I would be horrified if a city said enough of these faceto-face public hearings, but for a lot of people that’s difficult to fit in their schedule and it can be intimidating,” said Griff Wigley of Wigley & Associates, who built and is moderating the website. Wigley coaches businesses, nonprofits and governments on the art of leadership blogging and the use of other social media technologies. He said the tools give residents a convenient, intimate and fresh look at issues. “It’s that authentic voice that people crave as opposed to memos and press releases and static web pages,” Wigley said. For city leaders, it’s a way to spread a strategic message. “A blog post can travel. People can put it in their blog. They can tweet it, they can put it on their Facebook or email it around,” Wigley said. He and Neal first met in the early 1990s when Neal contacted a Northfield community website bulletin board run by Wigley, a resident of that city. Neal was applying to be city
administrator and wanted to learn more. “There was hardly any websites at that point,” Wigley said. “He got the job here in Northfield and was always willing to come back and participate in our community online. One of the things I learned is if you schedule online events for leaders, they’re more likely to participate than if you expect them to hangout and participate endlessly.” Over the years they stayed in touch. When Neal left Northfield for Eden Prairie, Wigley suggested he start a blog there. Wigley said Neal became a poster child for leadership blogging. A delegation from the British government even visited Northfield to learn about e-government initiatives from Wigley. That led to a contract to teach in the United Kingdom. Wigley brought Neal with to speak from the government perspective. Soon after joining Edina in January, Neal also began a blog on the city’s primary website, CityofEdina.com. It is one of the most frequently visited pages on the site. Neal said while he “can’t point to a great idea that saved millions of dollars” that came from his experience in social media, he has learned more about how people perceive the city and about what they want it to be.

Brianna Bellows The Edina High girls lacrosse standout has been named to the Minnesota Elite 2012-14 team for the 2011 summer season. She helped the Hornets to a 10-5 record this spring. Blake School head coach Laura Mark is one of the coaches for the Minnesota Elite team.
BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS James Dean, the right-hander with the familiar name, was on his game June 29 when Edina defeated Bloomington Gold 11-3 in a South Hennepin American Legion game at Braemar Park. Don’t confuse Dean with James Dean, the 1950s actor, or Jimmy Dean, the sausage king. He’s first and foremost a ballplayer. Dean pitched his best game of the summer in taking down Gold, which has players from Bloomington Kennedy’s section-champion high school team. “James is our ace on the hill,” said Edina Legion coach Nick Kennedy. “He did a great job.” Dean didn’t allow Gold to bunch its hits and he picked a runner off first base. Edina’s hitters also rose to the occasion. “We started out slowly, but then the bats woke up,” said Kennedy. “Every man in our lineup had at least one hit.” Edina catcher Nick Denn put the biggest dent in Bloomington Gold’s chances when he hit a three-run homer. He also had a single. Alex Lampert had two hits for Edina, which raised its South Hennepin Legion record to 4-1. “We took the Fourth of July weekend off,” said Kennedy. “Now it’s on to the Gopher Classic. That tournament was around back when [assistant coach] Tommy Nevers was playing Legion ball years ago. Our goal is to get to bracket play on Monday [July 11].” Sixty-six teams will vie for the Gopher Classic championship. Pitching depth is always a factor in a long tournament such as the Gopher Classic. Teams that make the finals end up playing nine games in a five-day span. “We have five solid starters in Danny Baer, James Dean, Matt Hopfner, Alex Lampert and Mitch Larson,” said Kennedy. “We have been working hard on defense in our practices, and that is starting to pay off. In the win over Gold, we had only one error.”

Danny Burke Burke, an All-Lake Conference player for the Edina High boys lacrosse team, has been selected to play on the Minnesota Gold Elite team this summer. He was Edina’s leading scorer this spring with 46 points on 23 goals and 23 assists. The Hornets finished 6-8 overall.

Power hitter adds to Mayhem in slowpitch softball league Anderson’s bat does the talking in Edina Monday night games BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The name of the team is Mayhem, and that’s a fitting description of how team leader Bryan Anderson plays the game. One of the most popular slowpitch leagues in the area is the Edina Monday Night Doubleheader League at VanValkenburg Park, and Anderson, a nine-year veteran, is one of the league’s dominant sluggers. He proved it again June 27 as Mayhem split its two games. Mayhem’s big hitter went 5-for-5 in the
first game as his team beat Splitting Stitches 24-16. Anderson had a home run, two doubles and a pair of singles. Anderson, who bats and throws lefthanded, was almost as good in the second game, an 18-16 loss to the Plungers. Officially, he went 2-for-4, but in truth, he was 3-for-4. He had a double and a single. Late in the game, he hit a home run, but Mayhem was already at its game limit of three home runs, so Anderson was called out. Is there any secret to clubbing home runs in slowpitch? “The key for me is don’t think about hitting them,” said Anderson. “When I try to hit one, I usually don’t. Win or lose, Anderson said playing in ANDERSON: TO NEXT PAGE
The Edina American Legion baseball pitcher went all seven innings as his team defeated Bloomington Gold 11-3 in a South Hennepin League game June 29 at Braemar Park. The win boosted Edina’s league record to 4-1.
Nick Denn Edina’s American Legion baseball catcher hit a single and a home run during his team’s 11-3 South Hennepin League win over Bloomington Gold June 29 at Braemar Park.
Austin Dover Edina High School’s boys lacrosse goalie has been chosen to play on the Minnesota Maroon Elite team for the 2011 summer season. The Hornets had a 6-8 record this spring.
Steven Fogarty The New York Rangers selected the AllLake Conference hockey forward from Edina High School in the third round of the 2011 NHL entry draft. He led Edina to an 18-7-2 record during the 2010-11 season.
George Ordway The National Boys Lacrosse Coaches Association has named George Ordway, captain of the Blake School boys lacrosse team, an All-American for 2011. At the end of the season, Ordway was named Mr. Lacrosse of Minnesota for 2011. Blake had two other high school All-American selections, Joel Pinedo and Ben Bennett.

Anderson FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the Monday Night Doubleheader League is a blast. “It’s a chance to see all my old high school buddies once a week,” he said. “All of us used to play baseball, and this is what happens when you can’t play baseball anymore … you play slowpitch. I like the doubleheader league because if you have a bad game, you get to play again right away.” Anderson doesn’t have many bad games, according to Mayhem’s player/coach and founder, Jay Higgins. Anderson averages more than one homer every night. “Bryan is the Jim Thome of this league,” said Higgins, referring to the Twins’ veteran left-handed slugger. “Every team puts the shift on him.” Still, the shift can’t contain Anderson’s home-run power. He sometimes hits balls over the hill and into the woods, which is the umpire’s worst nightmare because it delays the game. “Bryan’s a great hitter, and he doesn’t always go for the fences,” Higgins noted. “He’s our glue guy, our pitcher, and he’ll usually hit a home run when we need it.” Higgins and Anderson first met when they played youth sports together in Edina. As the quarterback on the football team, Higgins liked to have big bodies blocking for him, and Anderson was one of the biggest kids he could find. “Bryan was the Blind Side long before the movie ever came out,” said Higgins. “If softball would have been a varsity sport [for boys], he would have been Tommy Nevers.” Nevers, probably the best baseball player in Edina history, is also a long-time slowpitch softball player in Edina. His prodigious home runs are similar to Anderson’s. The split June 27 gave Mayhem a 7-7 season record. “That’s the Mayhem way – a split every night,” said Higgins. “We might not be the best team in the league right now, but watch out for us in the playoffs.” One of the keys to Mayhem’s success over the years is that the guys don’t take the game too seriously. “We have one practice a week before the season at Todd Park,” said Anderson. “That’s about all the warm-up we need.” “Since we’ve been in this league, we’ve never won it all,” said Higgins. “Maybe if we did, we could stop living off of our high school glory days.” All of the Mayhem players are former Edina High athletes, and all but two, Todd and Pat Fronek, are from the class of 1996. “This is a lot of fun, playing with the guys I grew up with,” said Anderson. “I’m going to keep doing this as long as I can.”

ESOX will play Dundas Dukes The Edina ESOX will return from their Fourth of July break to play the Dundas Dukes in a 7:30 p.m. nonleague game Friday, July 8, at Dundas Park. Prior to the break, the ESOX split in a pair of Riverview League games. Edina topped Austin 3-2 in a game played June 26 at St. Louis Park’s Dakota Field. In a game played at Minnetonka June 30, the ESOX lost to the defending state-champion Millers, 12-6. In the victory over Austin, ESOX manager Denny Scanlon started former Hopkins High ace Brandon
Agneberg on the mound. Agneberg went six innings to get credit for the win. Another former Hopkins pitcher, Erik Olson, pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the save. The ESOX juggled the lineup in that game, resting their veteran first baseman, Reggie Dunlop. Going into the Fourth of July break, the Bloomington Bandits were first in the Riverview League standings at 7-0. Minnetonka was a game behind and Edina was in contention at 6-3. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN
The USA Cup youth soccer tournament returns to the National Sports Center in Blaine this month. It starts with the USA Cup weekend tournament July 15-17. For the past several summers, the tournament has included more than 1,000 teams.
Sr. Babe state tourney The Edina Senior Babe Ruth baseball team is bidding for a spot in the state tournament, which will be played July 12-16 at Legion Field in Apple Valley. Edina suffered its first loss of the Metro Senior Babe Ruth league season in a game with Minnetonka last week. Minnetonka, another team with state title aspirations, tuned up for state by winning the DQ Classic American Legion tournament in Ely recently. The Mudhens added to their 10-game winning streak by beating Richfield 15-1 and Edina 9-8 in league games.

Giles pleased to see Hornets chosen in NHL’s entry draft When 2011 Edina High graduates Steven Fogarty and Max Everson were picked by NHL teams in the annual entry draft, it was another bonanza for coach Curt Giles and the Hornet program. Ever since Giles took over as head coach 12 years ago, he has given Edina players the tools they need to succeed beyond high school. Look at some of the great players he has sent to the college ranks – most recently, Anders Lee, Zach Budish, Marshall Everson, Joe Gleason – it’s easy to see why college and pro scouts keep coming back to Edina. Fogarty and Max Everson are anxious to add to the tradition of NHL draftees from the Hornet program. The New York Rangers tabbed Fogarty as their third-round pick. He was taken 72nd overall. The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up Max Everson’s rights in the seventh round. “Steven Fogarty is the prototypical pro,” said Giles. “He’s got good size [6foot-2, 212 pounds], and he can really skate. Steven sees the ice well, handles the puck well. He has all the attributes NHL scouts look for.” What about intangibles? “You could never question his work ethic,” said Giles. “He pushes himself physically and mentally, and he’s also a kid who will take coaching.” Fogarty has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at the University of Notre Dame. Max Everson, who played defense for four varsity seasons with the Hornets, was a “steal” in the seventh round, according to Giles. “I thought Max would be selected earlier,” the coach said. “His decision to go to Harvard might have had something to do with it. Max is a very intelligent player with great physical skills. He’s matured an awful lot in the last two years.” Giles played 14 seasons as a defenseman in the NHL, so he obviously knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. What has he told Fogarty and Everson? “I am anxious to see them succeed as they move forward,” said Giles. “I told them the hard work has just begun, and they will have to work extremely hard. I know they will do that. They are two wonderful kids.”

Lake supremacy Overall, seven former Lake Conference players were taken in the 2011 NHL entry draft. Edina, Wayzata and Eden Prairie each had two drafted players. The Minnesota Wild took Wayzata forward Mario Lucia with a second-round draft choice. Another Wayzata forward, Tony Cameranesi, was Toronto’s fifth-round choice. The Florida Panthers chose Eden Prairie forward Kyle Rau in the third round. His high school teammate, Nick Seeler, went to the Minnesota Wild in the fifth round. The Washington Capitals in the sixth round drafted Travis Boyd, who played two years at Hopkins High before leaving to play in the U.S. National Team Development Program.
Mike Olson steps down Mike Olson announced last week that he would not return for a fourth season as Edina High School’s head baseball coach. Olson brought a competitive fire to the Hornets and worked especially well with the pitchers in his three seasons. During his career as a high school player at St. Louis Park, Olson was one of the best pitchers in the state with a fastball clocked at well above 90 miles per hour. Edina High activities director John Soma can add finding Olson’s replacement to his summer to-do list.
Hendrickson’s status Former Richfield High hockey star Darby Hendrickson has been retained as a Minnesota Wild assistant coach by new head coach Mike Yeo. My opinion? It’s a great move. Hendrickson had a solid playing career in the NHL. In his first season as an assistant last year, he showed he could coach in the league.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
