Richfield couple made a lasting impression Police-enthusiast pastor, wife die as result of car crash BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS He was a larger-than-life character who provided spiritual leadership for many. His wife was an educator who
Verne and Kathie Voss
enjoyed working with children. Together Verne and Kathie Voss spent the last two decades of their careers working at a Minneapolis church – Verne as the pastor, Kathie as a preschool teacher at the parish school. The couple, both 70, died last week following a two-vehicle collision in Minneapolis. The Jan. 4 crash killed Verne that afternoon. Kathie died from
injuries sustained in the accident two days later. A funeral for the couple was held Jan. 11 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church of Bloomington. The couple moved to Richfield in the mid-90s, about 10 years before retiring together from Pilgrim Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis. Since retiring the couple maintained a busy schedule. Verne had long been attracted

Illustrated history Richfield Middle School received an extreme makeover this week, as artist Greg Preslicka of Savage created a historical mural of Richfield on a cafeteria wall. Working from a preliminary sketch that students were able to examine as Preslicka decked the wall, the mural illustrates the connection between Richfield’s past and present. A ribbon from the past winds through Richfield of today, showing how the city is influenced by its past. Native American settlements, farmland, Fort Snelling, canoeing, airplanes and the Minneapolis skyline are among the images in the mural. (Submitted photos)
BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS When questioned about a fur coat she was accused of stealing, a Brooklyn Park woman had a surprise for a Bloomington investigator. After spending her New Year’s Day weekend in a Bloomington Police Department jail cell, the 46-year-old suspect was interviewed Jan. 3. She was accused of taking a $6,500 fur coat from Alaskan Fur Company of Bloomington on New Year’s Eve and arrested later that day on the opposite side of the city. THIEF: TO PAGE 18

RICHFIELD POLICE REPORT
Man arrested after couple’s dispute on New Year’s Day BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS A boyfriend’s dispute with his girlfriend turned physical and resulted in a New Year’s Day arrest in Richfield. Police were called to a home on the 7600 block of Penn Avenue on the night of Jan. 1, where a 22-year old Brooklyn Center man had pushed then slapped his girlfriend. The man was arrested for seconddegree aggressive assault with a dangerous weapon. That weapon, it turned out, was his hands, according to Richfield police lieutenant Jay Henthorne. The man approached his girlfriend and shoved her with both hands, then slapped her a couple of times, Henthorne said.

$1,000 was stolen out of a Richfield home on the 7200 block of 18th Avenue Dec. 21. A Richfield man believed to be in his mid-20s is being sought after taking earrings and a necklace out of the home, Henthorne said. The case remains open.
Hit and run A hit-and-run accident in Richfield didn’t lead to any arrests, but did result in a busted up taillight. Richfield Police filed a report at midnight Dec. 30 from the 7700 block of Portland Avenue after a car was reported to be rear-ended. A taillight was broken out, and the car received some other minor damage to its rear end. The driver of the other car “just took off,” Henthorne said.

LETTERS TO THE E DITOR Curbing government spending is the answer To the editor: While reading the Dec. 30 Sun-Current article “Taxes to rise in anticipation of another state cut,” I had concerns about phrases such as less dependence upon state aid will come at a cost to Richfield taxpayers, the city came up $1.9 million short in 2010 and the bulk of the tax levy increase is due to the city’s effort to get ahead of the anticipated cut. It seems to me that this is just more of government spending much more than what it takes in. City, county, state and federal government needs to live within its means. When I want to spend more money than what I have, I cannot go to my employer and say that I want to buy this, so give me more money. Government needs to reduce its spending as companies and citizens have done. As we have been forced to reduce our spending to affordable limits, the government coming at us for even more money puts us that much further in the hole. My final advice for government is get your spending under control and live within the limits of what you have. Mike McLean Richfield
Let’s not take fun out winter entirely I think we would all agree we have about enough snow for one winter. It’s beginning to become loathsome. Did you know that the city of Bloomington clears more than 2,000 lane miles of snow after each dump? That’s a lot of plows, plow drivers, salt, sand and patience. Winter is a total bust for an old fogy like myself. When it’s cold and snowy, my joints ache and my nearly bald head gets cold. But for children, winter is a wonderland of play opportunities. Fortunately, I’m not too old to remember those days. One of my delights as a child was getting together with the children in our neck of the woods and building snow forts. Some of them were quite elaborate. Playing on the snow banks and tunneling through them were also highlights of the season. Not so much today. Bloomington officials have issued danger warnings regarding playing in and around snow banks. If you’re inside one and a plow comes along, you could be swept away with the plow and that wouldn’t be much fun.
PAUL WAHL Sun-Current Managing Editor
Now I fully understand the need to issue these warnings because, frankly, there are people out there who don’t have much gray matter above the neck. I feel somewhat pained, however, that we’re raining (snowing perhaps) on the parade of winter fun for children. Another entity recently issued a statement about the dangers of sleds. Well, certainly they can be dangerous, and I know individuals who have been injured in sledding accidents. But what fun would winter be for any child without sledding? You simply have to use common sense and anticipate what might happen if you, for instance, try to jump a six-foot snow bank on a sled. Oh, wait a minute … that was me. Let’s just say I didn’t stick the landing. Winter coats are also dangerous if they have strings hanging out of them. I’m sure a der-
matologist would tell you that wearing a knit cap is bad for your follicles. Gloves reduce the dexterity of your fingers, which means you might not be able to respond quickly in case of an emergency or dial 911 on our cell phone. Ice is slippery. Tongues do stick to metal. While no one suggests putting children deliberately in harm’s way, there has to be some recognition that, with winter part of our world for nearly six months out of the year, we have to make accommodations. Children cannot be kept cooped inside all winter long just because they might get hurt if they go outside. They might get hurt if they stay inside and mom grows weary of hearing them bicker and argue. And what about that obesity menace that’s facing our children? Certainly sitting on the couch all winter will do little to help alleviate that situation. My mother often referred to my scars acquired from winter recreation as “education marks.” In other words, “what did you learn from this experience?” That which does not kill us makes us smarter.

For the New Year, make a few green resolutions BY ANGIE TIMMONS • GUEST COLUMNIST It’s that time of year again—what will you pledge to improve this year? How about making a commitment to be more environmentally friendly? Think about the waste you or your family produces and how you can minimize that amount. Recycle more, buy less, reduce waste — there are many ways to reduce your impact. Here are a few ideas: • Pick one new thing to recycle. Choose cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, or items from the bathroom like toothpaste boxes and shampoo bottles. Most of us can recycle more than we think. Read about what items can be recycled on RethinkRecycling.com. • Get your name off of junk mail lists. Each year, the average household in the U.S. receives more than 40 lbs. of unwanted, unsolicited mail. Many find junk mail to be a real pain, but it’s sometimes hard to know who to contact to
remove your name from a list. Rethink Recycling has compiled resources for getting your name off lists of major marketers, credit companies, and how to register with the Direct Marketing Association’s Mail Preference Service. • Pack a no-waste lunch. Another easy “be green, save green” tip: Use a reusable lunch bag and reusable containers instead of plastic bags or disposable containers — and of course, a cloth napkin. • Use a reusable mug and bags. Instead of using a Styrofoam or paper cup from the coffee shop, bring in your own mug. Use a reusable lunch bag and bring a water bottle to refill; you’ll save money and reduce waste. • Look for less packaging and avoid disposables. This one’s big — nearly 30 percent of our trash is packaging. Much of this is cardboard, which can be recycled, but why use the resources on recycling

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE when we didn’t need that packaging in the first place? When you’re at the store, buy in bulk and bring reusable bags to carry your purchases. Choose less-packaged products over individually wrapped items. • Borrow, rent or shop used. Borrow or rent items that friends or neighbors have or that stores offer, then check out buying used before heading to the store for a new item that you’ll only use a couple of times. • Reduce toxins in your home. Instead of using store-bought household cleaners that may harm the environment, consider making your own cleaners that work well and keep kids, pets and the environment safe. • Explore composting. If you don’t already compost, read about it on RethinkRecycling.com. A green New Year’s resolution is a worthy resolution and one you can stick to. Get your friends, family and kids involved — it’s a great way to spread the word about waste and recycling and to help reduce the waste in our landfills. You can also stop by our website, RethinkRecycling.com, to read more no-waste tips, find information on what you can and cannot recycle, read other people’s green resolutions and share your own on our blog. The Ice Bowl and contributions to the Burnsville Fire Muster are the club’s ways of giving back to the local community. “We’d also like to grow the sport and invite community members to come and

A medal bestowed for honor earned four decades before Eagan veteran gets medal with help of Dakota County Veterans Services BY JOSEPH PALMERSHEIM • SUN NEWSPAPERS When Eagan resident Tim Callister returned from Vietnam, the military sent him a letter stating that he’d earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroic actions on a helicopter mission in 1970. Callister had piloted a helicopter over Cambodia to extract a long-range reconnaissance patrol under enemy fire on Aug. 24, 1970. The patrol had run into North Vietnamese forces and called for an extraction so they weren’t overrun. The pilot got the letter about winning the award – but the medal itself never showed up. For more than 40 years, Callister let the matter slide. “I didn’t really think about it,” he said. “You get on with life. You have a job, a family. Vietnam wasn’t popular, and for the most part, people didn’t care about the guys coming back.”
90 Years of Experience Wellroom Repair
Four decades after he earned it, Callister was finally given the medal Dec. 29 in special recognition ceremony at Dakota County’s Northern Service Center. The effort was made possible by Dakota County Veterans Services, a county-funded office that assists local veterans in getting the benefits they are entitled to. Veterans Service officer Mike Labovitch has worked as a veteran’s advocate for 36 years, and has “lost count” of how many of Dakota County’s 32,000 veterans have been served. One way of measuring, he said, was that the office had secured more than $108 million in benefits for Dakota County veterans in 2009 alone. “What we do is take the

who wanted a Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds he’d received as one of the “Chosin Few,” one of 20,000 soldiers who battled North Korean and Chinese forces, as well as frostbite, during an encirclement in December 1950. Both sides suffered massive casualties in the engagements. In Callister’s case, finally receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross started when he worked with Veterans Services Officer John Dorle in 2009. “He didn’t come in about the medal,” Dorle said. “He came in for another reason, and in the course of our interview, we discovered there was an inadequacy we needed to correct in his records. We had documentation showing that he was entitled.” A request for the medal was made in September 2009, and it took nearly a year for a new set of medals to show up. “I thought it was pretty neat,” Callister said of finally receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. “But a lot of folks I was with didn’t come back. Some came back injured for life. That happened all over the country. There were a lot of folks that did heroic things that didn‘t get mentioned.”
guy who really helped keep this country free, and we’re able to help pay him back,” Labovitch said. “The VFW motto is to ‘honor the dead by serving the living’ – and that’s what we do. It’s guys like Mr. Callister, who said very humbly that he was so happy to be home that he just never pushed it. He was happy to be safe, and knew he was entitled, but never pushed it. When he came in here, we pushed it.” Labovitch said the office’s four service officers and three clerical workers serve as advocates and access points for veterans to find the information and help they need. Getting medals isn’t a primary function of Veterans Services, Labovitch said, but there are typically three open medal cases at any given time. One of those requests came from a Korean War veteran

Edina resident retires to Tonga after lengthy science career Fowles joins Peace Corps in South Pacific island BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS
Edina resident Jinnet Fowles (left) takes Tongan language lessons with teacher Ofa Koloi while serving in the Peace Corps in the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific. Fowles joined the Peace Corps after retiring from Park Nicollet Health Services, where she worked for 25 years. (Submitted photo)
Jinnet Fowles retired from her job of 25 years as a senior research scientist at Park Nicollet Health Services in September. The longtime Edina resident’s retirement plan included getting a new job in education research at a small nonprofit. “The general structure and pressure to get funding to do research are amazingly similar,” said Fowles. “It’s ironically exactly what I was doing for Park Nicollet.” But there is a big difference. Fowles is working in Tonga, a chain of islands in the South Pacific, with the Peace Corps. She was sworn in as a volunteer last month after 10 weeks of intensive training. She is now on assignment at the
University of the South Pacific’s Institute of Education on Tonga’s main island of Tongatapu. “I was approaching retirement age, looking at the last third of my life and what I wanted to do with it,” said Fowles by phone in early January. “My children are healthy, educated and employed so it seemed like a great time to step away from my life as I knew it.” This year, Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since 1961, more than 200,000 Americans have served with the organization aimed at promoting better understanding between Americans and people around the world. Today, 8,655 volunteers are working with local communities in 77 host countries. Peace Corps volunteers must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit for Peace Corps. The average age is 27. About 5 percent of volunteers are over 50. PEACE CORPS: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Fowles said she is lucky to be joined by four other volunteers over 50 in her cohort of 26 currently serving in Tonga. She said service overseas is a fabulous thing for older adults. “I’ve always said the worst disease of growing old is hardening of the categories,” said Fowles. “I think we should think about the last third of our lives as being expansive rather than diminishing. Just because our physical capacity is diminishing doesn’t mean our worldview has to. It’s a real opportunity for growth.” Fowles, who has a doctorate in communication research from Stanford University, started the Peace Corps application process in 2007. As part of the extensive health screening involved, she discovered she had early stage breast cancer. It derailed her plans, but only temporarily. “You go through that and you realize your health is subject to change, and I decided if was going to do it I better jump on the stick and get it done,” said Fowles. After successful treatment, she applied again in May 2009, was accepted in July 2010 and received medical clearance in January 2010. She spent several months packing up her Edina home and preparing to rent it while serving her 27month commitment in Peace Corps. She was initially told she’d be serving in Central Asia. “Then I got this letter that I was invited to serve in the Kingdom of Tonga,” said Fowles. “First, I had no idea where Tonga was. Then I was just excited I wasn’t going to somewhere-istan – I was

going to this beautiful South Pacific country of islands.” Before departing for Tonga from Los Angeles in October, she took a road trip to visit friends and family across the country, including her grown children ages 29 and 31 both living on the east coast. She said they were very supportive of her decision to join Peace Corps. “They both think they have the coolest mom in the universe,” she said. She got her first research assignment for her new job while still in training on Ha’apai, one of Tonga’s more rural islands. The Kingdom of Tonga is comprised of 176 islands, only about 40 of which are inhabited. So far she’s learned how life differs on rural islands PEACE CORPS: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE versus the main island, where she lives on the University campus in a two-bedroom house. In Ha’apai, she was directed to explore cultural industries as part of a European Union-funded grant to help record, preserve and promote local culture. “I spent a lot of time interviewing primarily weavers – there’s a huge amount of weaving that goes on in that area – to understand where their materials come from, how they coordinate with other weavers and how they distribute the products they make,” she said. “That was fascinating for me.” Fowles said she’s also been surprised by how weather plays a huge role in travel. She has twice been unable to travel to rural islands for additional research assignments. Her entire cohort is also serving on developed islands instead of the usual rural Peace Corps outposts due to a ferry tragedy two years ago that left many of the islands without safe and reliable boat access. “Everything is always conditioned on the weather and the fact you’re on separate islands,” said Fowles. She said she is also learning a lot

Follow us on The Richfield Sun-Current is now on Twitter. Follow us at twitter.com/suncurrent. about the way Tonga has been influenced by western culture. For instance, Christianity is a big part of life. “This week is prayer week in Tongatapu. It’s an extremely Christian religious country and the first week of the year everyone goes to a morning and evening prayer service,” said Fowles. While never colonized like other South Pacific islands, including Samoa and Fiji, Tonga has still been greatly influenced by countries that provide monetary aid. “This is a very poor country and aid is critical, but aid always comes with strings attached,” she said. “There’s a real struggle for the people of Tonga to reclaim their cultural heritage. I’m working really hard to understand how island nation are attempting to resolve this imbalance in their education.” Many people on the main island speak English and were educated in Australia or New Zealand. But people on smaller islands speak Tongan, and Fowles continues to receive two hours of language tutoring every week. Fowles said she isn’t missing the Minnesota winter – “I love hearing about it from a safe distance.” It is currently summer in Tonga, but because it is further south from the equator than many other South Pacific islands, it is more temperate. “It is hot, but there are always breezes from the ocean,” said Fowles, who is expecting a number of guests from the United States. She said her focus is on the island now and not what she’ll do when her time with the Peace Corps is up in December 2012. “I am still in my honeymoon phase,” said Fowles. “I just love it. I love my work at the University of the South Pacific. It’s very stimulating. Then I have this fantastic home. I go around really most of the time saying pinch me.”

The Ice Festival is the only outdoor event he does each year, and Rust said he likes being outside talking to people. Above, horses “Socks” and “Snuffy” pull a horse-drawn carriage. daughter Kara Stoerzinger of Shakopee. “He just loved that job,” she said. He may not have been a police officer, but he treated the job as if it was as important, Stoerzinger noted. Verne was a gun collector who practiced his marksmanship in recent years during Saturday trips to a shooting range. He had a conceal-and-carry permit, and was pictured on his permit wearing his clerical collar. “He liked to stir the pot,” Stoerzinger said. Verne was able to combine his career as a pastor and aspirations in law enforcement while living in Richfield. In 2003 Verne was chosen as one of the inaugural chaplains for the Richfield Police Department. As a chaplain Verne was on duty one week per month, assisting Richfield Police at the scene of a tragedy when called to do so. One of his recent calls was to counsel a family dealing with suicide, according to Brice Eichlersmith, a pastor at Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield. “He was really good at it,” Eichlersmith said. Like Verne, Eichlersmith signed on as a police chaplain at the program’s inception, noting that chaplains may also be called in to counsel police officers and firefighters following traumatic incidents. Verne had experience working with law enforcement as a servant of God prior to signing on with Richfield. He held a similar position years earlier, when he worked as a pastor in Jordan. Verne’s retirement endeavors included traveling with Kathie. The couple had led several tours of Israel, including archeological digs, and visited several
Thief FROM PAGE 1 She initially said she didn’t take the coat, but later claimed she had sold the coat prior to being arrested by police, according to the complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court Jan. 4. When told by the investigator that she may be charged with felony theft while in custody – meaning a trip to downtown Minneapolis for booking – the woman produced the mid-length mink coat from underneath her dress. The woman had been searched by police following her arrest, but the search failed to turn up the coat the woman – who is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 270 pounds – had tucked into her underwear. The woman was one of two suspects in the New Year’s Eve coat theft. The woman entered the store at the same time
foreign countries before and after retirement. “They loved to travel,” Stoerzinger said. Brain cancer didn’t keep Kathie from traveling, according to Stoerzinger. Kathie was a spunky lady and “one tough cookie” who had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments during most of the past four years, her daughter said. Her parents were on their way to the hospital for Kathie’s checkup last week when they collided with a vehicle at the intersection of 46th Street and Portland Avenue. Despite Kathie’s two major surgeries during the past four years, the couple had made a down payment on a cruise they planned to take later this winter, Stoerzinger noted. Kathie’s health rarely slowed her down. She made it a priority to attend sporting events and endeavors her grandchildren were involved in. “Even when she wasn’t feeling well, she would go,” Stoerzinger said. Photo collections from their trips often included children they encountered, Jon recalled. His mother had “a special place in her heart for children.” When she couldn’t teach at a school, Kathie found other ways to share her talent with children. During their years in Jordan, Kathie opened a preschool program in the basement of their home, a rather unique endeavor at the time, Stoerzinger noted. Pilgrim Lutheran Church held a memorial service Saturday evening. The Vosses joined St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Bloomington, where Stoerzinger works as director of children’s ministry, upon retirement from Pilgrim Lutheran.
Public Safety as another man, and the two split up immediately inside the store. The man was talking on a cell phone inside the store, and it appeared to store employees that the duo was attempting to distract store employees, Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik said. A pillar inside the store helped screen the woman from the view of store employees. An employee approached the woman, who appeared to be stuffing a coat up her dress while kneeling on the floor. When confronted by the employee, the woman said she had not taken the coat. She lifted the back of her dress to show that she did not have the coat. It appeared to the employee that the woman was not wearing underwear, according to the complaint. THIEF: TO NEXT PAGE

After giving up the coat nearly 72 hours later, the woman told police that she had removed the back of her underwear so that when she lifted the back of her dress it would appear that she was

Rampage wrestlers place fourth at Hopkins

Dyer, Deeds earn individual titles
Richfield keeps upgrading its athletic facilities
BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Richfield/Edina Rampage co-op wrestling squad turned in a strong performance at the Paul Bengston Invitational tournament Jan. 8 at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. Two Rampage wrestlers won individual titles and Richfield/Edina placed fourth out of nine teams in the tournament with 137 points. Richfield junior Mike Dyer won the heavyweight division with a 2-0 record. He improved his overall record to 11-4. Edina senior Quinn Deeds took first in the 215-pound weight class with two pins. His record is 12-5. Richfield sophomore Chandler Arrendondo went 3-1 and placed third at 189 pounds. His record is 14-6. Three other third-place finishers were Richfield eighth-grader Christian Wellens at 103, Richfield ninth-grader Obsa Ali at 112 and Edina junior James Lettow at 135. Lettow improved his record to 10-5. “The Rampage wrestlers had a great showing in the tournament,” said Richfield/Edina co-head coach Eric Herrmann. “Our wrestlers were very determined to place high. “We have great leadership on this team from Lettow, Richfield senior Mitch Wojcik and Deeds. Deeds leads the team in pins with 12 and Arrendondo is first on our squad with 14 wins.” Richfield, hampered by injuries, lost a pair of conference dual meets Jan. 6. The Rampage lost 39-31 to Tartan and 4628 to Mahtomedi 46-28. Wojcik, Deeds and Dyer posted two pins each in the double dual-meet.

Gymnastics
have been Kelsey Metz, Sara Tseng and Courtney Miller. Metz should be recovered from an ankle injury by Thursday, Jan. 13, when the Spartans travel to Henry Sibley for a 6:30 p.m. conference meet. Moriah Greenblat and Steph McGinness are contributing to the Spartan varsity squad as well. Richfield’s top all-around scorers thus far are Metz (31.85), Miller (32.275), Tseng (32.85), Greenblat (30.275) and McGinness (28.625). “We have been getting better with each meet,” said Richfield assistant coach Matt Norris. “We will be making a push to finish second in the conference and send some girls to state.” This will be the last season for Nikki Saf-Sanders as Richfield’s head gymnastics coach. She will be stepping down after this season to spend more time with her family. Norris and Josiah Cree will take over coaching duties.
Richfield is 2-1 in dual meets this season. The Spartans lost to Mahtomedi 139.45-120.275 but defeated St. Louis Park (124.125-118.675) and Tartan (125.075123.075). Richfield’s top three all-arounders
Richfield suffered its first girls basketball loss of the season last week. The Spartans were upset 61-56 in overtime by North St. Paul Jan. 7. Richfield (7-1) was tied with the

Polars 52-52 after regulation. But North St. Paul outscored the Spartans 9-4 in overtime. Richfield sophomore guard Jessica January scored 28 points. Hannah Wise and Katie Anderson scored eight and seven points respectively. Richfield opened the week with a 7648 triumph over Simley Jan. 4. January connected for 34 points. Anderson scored 11 points and Hailey Lindblom added eight.
Boys basketball Richfield added a pair of Classic Suburban Conference wins last week to improve to 6-1. Richfield overpowered Simley 90-35 Jan. 4 as six Spartan players scored in double figures. Those leading Richfield scorers were Jared Noonan (19 points), John Johnson (16), Dashawn Jones (11), Jared Etienne (10), Louis Williams (10) and Shawn Bear (10). The Spartans defeated North St. Paul 78-47 Jan. 7. Noonan led the offense with 19 points and Bear contributed 17 points. Lorenzo Evans scored seven points. Daron Garvis, Erik Jimson and Wibi MacDonald scored six points each.
I grew up in St. Louis Park but had the good fortune to compete against Richfield High School football, basketball and baseball teams four decades ago. We didn’t win many games against the powerful Spartans in that era, but I was always impressed by Richfield’s superb athletic facilities. Richfield High School, opened in 1954, had the nicest grass football field in the metro area. And the Spartans’ baseball facility was always first class. Since then, the Richfield school district has done a great job of keeping its athletic venues in fine shape. But, like shoes, they wear out over time. Even the best fields and gyms need renovation. Richfield has taken to this task under the leadership of athletic director Todd Olson with support from Richfield Superintendent Robert Slotterback, the school board, plus many community businesses and individuals. Proceeds from the sale of Lincoln Hills Elementary School and surrounding land were put into a betterment fund to finance local athletic facility renovations. Richfield remodeled its high school gymnasium in 2006 with a new scoreboard and bleachers. The Richfield-Bloomington Credit Union provided the scoreboard. And renovations were made to make the Richfield Middle School pool a stateof-the-art swimming facility that gets heavy use by high school and community swimmers. KLEVEN: TO NEXT PAGE

Junior Sarah Nygaard had Richfield’s best time (22:53). “Sarah had a great race on a very cold evening at Battle Creek Park,” said Mills. “She just missed finishing in the top 10 by 30 seconds.” Other Richfield competitors were junior Hannah Adams (22:53), Hannah Olson (24:44), Erica Strom (25:01) and Kellin Swanson (26:30). Richfield’s Nordic skiers also competed in a quadrangular freestyle race on a 6K course Jan. 6 in Lake Elmo. The Spartans won the girls and boys team titles. Nygaard led the Spartan girls in 21:15. Olson, Strom, Alex Schulz and Sophie Pulice also aided the Spartans’ winning cause. In the boys race, Beaudet had the top Spartan time (17:03) followed by Bauer (17:05) and Moreno (17:57). Other Spartan point producers were Luttenegger and junior Nelson Soto.
Spartans prevail over North St. Paul in dual swim meet Mayo, several Spartans post personal bests BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield junior swimmer Ken Mayo had a breakout performance during a Spartan dual meet victory Jan. 7. The Spartans evened their record at 2-2 with a 94-81 win over North St. Paul. Richfield is 1-1 in Classic Suburban Conference competition. Mayo came through with four personal-best times. “Kenny told me he wanted to break 6 minutes, 20 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle,” said Richfield coach Marc Hamren. “We told him what he had to do for his 50 splits and he went out and did it with a lifetime-best time of 6:18.15.”
Kleven FROM PREVIOUS PAGE The Richfield School District used $1.2 million of the betterment fund to refurbish the middle school athletic and physical education fields, including quality fastpitch softball fields. And the crowning jewel of the
Mayo placed third in the 500. Spartan teammate Matthew Graham finished second in that event (5:28.02). Hamren said senior captain Chris Tomkinson also had a strong meet, posting season-best times in three of his four races. “Chris worked incredibly hard in our pre-meet practice and then had strong performances at the meet,” said Hamren. “He’s demonstrating to his teammates what it takes to win.” Sophomore Mohab Eid turned in an outstanding performance as well, Hamren said. He dropped seven seconds from his previous season-best time to win the 100 butterfly in 58.66 seconds. “That was one gutsy swim by Mohab,” said Hamren. “He virtually attacked the race from the very beginning and just lit the place up.” Richfield’s winning 200 medley relay team consisted of Andy Peterson, Max
Hamilton, Duncan Pederson and Brian Christian. The Spartans’ time was 1:48.10. Graham took first in the 200 freestyle (1:59.09). Peterson placed second (1:59.50). Tomkinson was second in the 50 freestyle (25.41). Hamilton finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:03.79). In the 100 freestyle, Pederson took first (53.80) and Tomkinson placed third (56.45). Richfield won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.93. Members of that relay were Pederson, Eid, Tomkinson and Brian Christian. Peterson claimed first place in the 100 backstroke (59.05). Josh Graham was fourth (1:28.72). Hamilton and Pederson placed first and second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.17 and 1:10.11. Richfield’s first-place 400 freestyle relay team of Tomkinson, Eid, Matthew Graham and Peterson had a time of 3:38.69.
Richfield sports renovation projects could be the Field Turf Prestige synthetic surface on the Spartan Stadium field. That $1 million project will be completed by mid-August and be ready for fall sports events by early September. Groundbreaking for the new turf field will be in mid-June. “The Richfield School Board had great vision regarding our renovation
projects,” said Olson. “And Supt. Slotterback deserves credit for his support. “The neat thing about these projects is that they were financed through the betterment fund. Our next focus after the new turf field is remodeling or refurbishing the high school baseball field. Richfield youth, high school and adult sports organizations will benefit from these improvements.”

(Editor’s note: Send nominations for Stars of the Week honors to sports editor Greg Kleven at gkleven@acnpapers.com. Youth, high school, college and adult recreational sports athletes will be considered.)
The new turf field should accommodate physical education classes, high school sports practices and games, and community sports events. Richfield’s athletic facilities will now be state of the art and a boost to the school and community. Congratulations to all the individuals and organizations that are responsible for upgrading the city’s sports facilities.
