in with the new Basketball court cut to make room for new skate park at Augsburg Park BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield’s Augsburg Park is losing a basketball court, but gaining a skate park. At the May 10 Richfield City Council meeting, the council voted four to one to begin negotiations toward a contract with Hardcore Skateparks, Inc., to build a concrete skateboard facility in the park. The Community Services Commission presented the idea for a skate park. “We been working on this for three years and it feels good to complete the design concept and move forward,” Recreation Services Director Jim Topitzhofer said. The design concept of the facility includes the use of the current basketball court at the east end and would allow the new skate park to use the rest of the court as is or for future expansion, according Topitzhofer. Augsburg Park was chosen for scoring the highest, in location, by the commission’s site selection criteria and scoring program. All of the parks in Richfield were measured on a scoring system for criteria such as: having an existing hard surface court that is used to a lesser extent compared to other Richfield courts, being visible for public safety personnel, having a residential buffer, having separation from other park uses, in a centralized location and having a close proximity to restrooms and water facilities. Council member Fred Wroge voted against the measure, saying he did not want

On May 9, students Adeilene Dominguez, Chris Dykes, Domnic Lembo and Dolores Popescu, along with teacher Terry Guthrie, nurse Mary Liar, school lunch supervisor Wanda Nickola and local corporate chef Todd Bolton of the Parásole Group of Restaurants made their recipe for the panel of expert

judges: USDA nutritionist Mydina R. Thabet, chef Shawn Hanlin and school nutrition professional Dr. Katie Wilson. The judges used a 100-point scale to rate the criteria in the categories of student involvement, SLIDERS: TO PAGE 24
