Teachers FROM PAGE 1 teacher Kristin Huber, Social Studies/Math teacher Scott Stadem and Math teacher Sarah Streitz. Richfield Middle School will lose Science teacher Lisa Schenk. Sheriden Hills Elementary will lose Title I teacher Patricia Veitenheimer. Centennial Elementary School will lose teacher Sylvia Stephens. Richfield Duel Language School will lose Literacy Specialist Kathleen Holtz. “I'm disappointed that my teaching position has been cut after 7 years of hard work and dedication to Richfield High School,” Huber said. “Unfortunately, that's the world of education as we know it right now,” The decision to terminate the teachers was based on many factors. According to Dr. Slotterback the revenue that the Richfield Public School’s receive is dictated by the State. For each student the district receives a set amount. When the amount of students goes up the amount the district receives increases. “Traditionally what happens is the amount we get goes up by an inflationary factor, but for the last two years and for the next two years because the state doesn’t have any money they have frozen the revenues. So that amount has stayed the same. The final amount is determined by the amount they tell us times the number of students we have,” Slotterback said.
Commuters FROM PAGE 1 alone,” Brad Aho, Chair of the I-494 Corridor Commission and Eden Prairie City Council member said. According to Aho, the study found that 30 percent of those people were willing to try an alternative transportation to and from work. “The results to that study prompted us to hire Commuter Services staff to work with employers and property managers to encourage them to engage in finding alternatives to driving alone,” Aho said. Commuter Services held the 2011 State of the Commute at the Best Buy Cooperation in Richfield, on April 6. At the conference, the organization gave employers a vast arsenal to help their employees choose different modes

As a result the district is forecasting flat funding from the state. Flat funding is little to no increase to state funds. In addition to the state influence the cost side in the district has added to the board’s decision. “We have to keep the buildings heated, we have to repair the roofs, we have to pay for the diesel for the buses, but 83 percent of all the money that we spend we spend on people,” Slotterback said. “We are in the people business. How many Richfield business can say they have a payroll over 40 million?” The cost to the district per teacher each year is on average $60,000. The district has reduced as much as they could out of the remaining 17 percent of the costs, according to Slotterback. He insists, “this year we are stuck and probably in the future of having to find the vast majority of that money out of people.” Before this year the district has reduce position in administration, custodial, paraprofessionals and secretarial. Another large component to this decision is the enrollments to some of the Richfield schools are going down. “The number of kids really dictates the number of teachers we need,” Slotterback said. The budget of next year is built on the assumption that the schools will have so many students. This assumption is back by an enrollment projection that, according to Slotterback, is very accurate even give the fact that about 30 percent of the students come and go during any given year.
The 30 percent is based on the students entering grade one through grade eleven. Seniors graduating out of the district are not factored into this group. At the Richfield STEM School, grade five had a very large group of students, while the kindergarten coming in is not as big current enrollment projections therefore they will have to put in their portion for the cuts, according to Slotterback. Across the board cuts were made. Each school needed to cut one teacher and the others were based on enrollment figures. Principal of Richfield STEM School Joey Page was “not surprised” by the school boards decision due to the lack of enrollment by 60 students for next year. “It’s always disappointing to lose quality employees due to State budgetary outlines,” Richfield High School Principal Stephen West said. Luckily, with the exact enrollment number to be determined in August staff may be brought back. “We use the big number first to give us a ballpark of how many people we need to lay off. When we do figure out how much kids we are going to have the tenure teachers generally get hired back first,” Slotterback said. Unfortunately during the next couple of school board meetings a larger number of district staff may be added to the list of layoffs. “It is hard to tell how many staff will be laid off but we are guesstimating 28 people will receive some type of lay off notification,” Slotterback said.

of transportation. “We encourage employers to hold commuter fairs,” said Kate Meredith, Director of Outreach for Commuter Services. At commuter fairs, employers and their employees are bombarded with information on how to make alternative choices to transportation to work in the way of commuter programs. Commuter programs vary from carpool ride match services, bike-to-work resources or personalized transit itineraries. Employers are offered information on how commuter programs may qualify for state and federal tax incentives. Another method mentioned at the conference was the presentation of the eWork Place. This state sponsored program is a business strategy and work process that facilitates employees to work from home or a remote location and connect to the office or clients by technology.
Employers enrolling into this program are offered manager’s guides, selection and policy check lists, solutions to issues, case studies and business reports to current eWork Place programs and an ‘ask the expert’ option that are all part of the eWork Place website. The last method mentioned was the recognition of the ‘Best Workplaces for Commuters’ employer designation. This award is given to companies who provide their employees with excellent commuter benefits. The Best Buy cooperate office was the first company to receive the award in Minnesota. “We wanted to commit to reducing traffic congestion and implement a variety of traffic demanded management strategies. We encourage our employees to really use a lot of alternative transportation methods,” Best Buy’s Work Life Manager Sarah Wuest said. According to Wuest, the Best Buy
Corporate office has implemented commuter incentives such as providing a fully subsided metro bus pass for employees committed to taking the bus at least three times a week. Best Buy also provides a $75-peremployee, per-month vanpool allowance. Best Buy also has preferential car-pooling and van-pooling parking. A centralized kiosk is available to Best Buy employees containing information on commuting options according to Wuest. “Commuter Services is working with over 600 companies in the five cities its serves. It has assisted 4,400 people who were driving alone to work with customized assistance to find a car pool partner, try to take the bus or with a customized bike route recommendation. It is that level of service that has resulted in the reduction of over 18 million miles,” Aho said. Info: 494corridor.org.

House approves bill that will give back variance authority to cities, counties Cities and counties lost most options to grant variances in 2010 Supreme Court decision BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Minnesota cities and counties may soon regain the authority to grant variances in the way they did for years prior to a recent Supreme Court decision. The Minnesota House approved a bill April 4 that will allow local governments greater latitude to grant zoning variances. The League of Minnesota Cities and a group of allies lobbied for the measure to address the fallout from the lawsuit. A decision handed down by the Minnesota Supreme Court in July 2010 Krummenacher v. City of Minnetonka changed the landscape for variances. In that case, the court ruled, “a municipality does not have the authority to grant a variance unless the applicant can show that her property cannot be put to a reasonable use without the variance.â€? That differed greatly from a 1989 decision that stated a variance could be granted if property owners “would like to use the property in a ‘reasonable manner’ that is prohibited by the ordinance.â€? In effect, the 2010 decision made it next to impossible for cities and townships to grant variances, except in rare circumstances. “The Krummenacher case actually took what was in practice here for a number of years in the state of Minnesota and made it illegal,â€? said Rep. Tim O’Driscoll, R-Sartell. He estimated that $45 million in construction projects in Minnesota were being held up because of the decision. The House bill is designed to clarify the current law so that cities and counties can use the standards that had been
in place for decades prior to last year’s decision. The bill was amended in the committee process – over the objection of the League of Minnesota Cities – to leave the language for how and when conditions may be imposed as part of a variance in different forms for counties and cities. Because of the differences, the League opposed the legislation as it appeared on the House floor. However, an agreement was reached when the bill came up for discussion to resolve those differences with matching language for cities and counties. That agreement was not drafted into amendment fast enough to make it into the House bill. But legislators made it clear a compromise had been agreed to and would be included in the bill when it came back from the Senate, according to the League. The League expects that a companion bill, sponsored by Sen. Gen Olson, RMinnetrista, will move through the Senate quickly and that Gov. Mark Dayton would sign the final bill. It had not been signed by the time this edition of the Sun-Sailor went to press. If approved, the new law would “finally clear statutory variance authority to cities, according to a statement from the League. Rep. Ryan Winkler, DFL-Golden Valley, did not vote for the House version of the bill – due to the language discrepancies between cities and counties – but is optimistic the Legislature will approve an adequate bill. He believes variances became an issue because the Minnesota Supreme Court in recent years has based its decisions less on intent and common sense interpretation of law. “The Minnesota Supreme Court has changed over the years, Winkler said. “It’s become very literal in how it interprets language. The bill won’t make variances impervious to future litigation, he said, but it should do a good job of bringing back the standards cities and counties have used for years.

With cloning, too little information can be a dangerous thing BY LINDA SLOCUM • GUEST COLUMNIST In the March 31 issue of the Sun Current, the paper printed an opinion piece from Managing Editor Joseph Palmersheim entitled, “Preventing the attack of the clones?” Mr. Palmersheim spoke of a bill moving through the Minnesota Senate that would ban human cloning. Since the publishing of that column, the language of that bill was added as an amendment to the higher education bills that passed both bodies of the Minnesota Legislature. My view? Too little information can be a dangerous thing. While Mr. Palmersheim correctly notes that the bill’s language, now used in amendment form, does ban human cloning, the language unfortunately also means that the amendment impacts legitimate research. The amendment to the House Higher Education Bill reads as follows: “No state funds or federal funds the state receives for state programs may be used to either support human cloning or to pay for any expenses incidental to human cloning. For purposes of this section, ‘cloning’ means generating a genetically identical copy of an organism at any
stage of development by combining an enucleated egg and the nucleus of a somatic cell to make an embryo.” As Mr. Palmersheim correctly notes, the amendment – in its second paragraph – does not affect or ban some of the stem-cell research currently occurring at the U or Mayo Clinic. The problem is that in an attempt to ban the act of cloning an entire human being, the amendment also bans therapeutic cloning. Therapeutic cloning uses blastocysts. These are made from a woman’s egg and cells from a patient. These blastocysts are used to reproduce other cells in the body, like heart cells to repair a damaged heart muscle, lung cells to repair a damaged lung, or islet cells in the pancreas to cure diabetes. There are other ways to create these stem cells, but doing it this way provides the most reliable method, and reduces the risk of a patient’s body rejecting the cells, because they’re genetically identical. Much like other stem cells, they are not viable for human life. But under the amendment, this form of stem-cell research becomes a misdemeanor, a crime! The amendment doesn’t adequately define “human cloning,” defining it as a “genetically identical copy” – which in turn bans therapeutic cloning. No one at the leg-
islature, DFL or Republican is in favor of reproductive cloning, but therapeutic cloning helps treat and combat disease. I agree with Mr. Palmersheim that legislating the future can be a “slippery slope.” However, the greater problem in legislation is often unintended consequences. It is arguable if this amendment truly intended to stop major forms of stem-cell research by Minnesota scientists at our University and at the Mayo Clinic, rather than just prevent reproductive cloning. The fact remains that this amendment stops potentially life-saving research. Researchers throughout the state have said that if this ban were to go into effect, they would consider moving their work – and the jobs that go with it – to other states. Too little information can be a dangerous thing. This amendment will cripple the great work being done at the U, Mayo Clinic, and a host of other research institutions. It will cripple work that could save lives, and it will cripple our research industry. It will move research jobs out of Minnesota. Minnesota has a sterling reputation for health care, research and innovation. This is no time to tarnish it. Linda Slocum is the state representative for District 63B.
Land of 10,000 stormwater ponds … and then some Runoff issues can be mitigated through planting, barrels or other methods BY JIM CALKINS • GUEST COLUMNIST As if 10,000 lakes weren’t enough, we’ve added a staggering number of artificial water bodies in the form of stormwater retention ponds to Minnesota’s landscape in recent decades. There are around 20,000 publicly owned stormwater ponds in the Twin Cities alone, and thousands more are privately owned or located outside the metro area. So, what is the purpose of these artificial ponds, and will they continue to multiply across our state? When put into widespread use in the ‘80s, stormwater ponds (often called NURP ponds because they are based on the research findings of the Nationwide Urban Runoff Program) represented a major step forward in reducing flooding and water pol-
lution. Previously, runoff from developed landscapes was commonly directed to storm sewers, which delivered it directly to the nearest wetland, lake, or stream. In hindsight, that wasn’t a very good idea. The resulting rush of water caused major downstream flooding and added pollutants to our surface waters. Valuable moisture was also shunted quickly downstream instead of infiltrating into the soil where it is needed to support healthy vegetation and groundwater recharge. As an alternative, stormwater ponds became popular with engineers and regulators because they retain runoff and release it gradually to reduce flooding. Retention also provides time for sediment and pollutants to settle out resulting in cleaner water. Even people outside stormwater man-
agement circles can sometimes appreciate stormwater ponds. If properly designed and maintained, they can be aesthetically appealing and increase property values. Stormwater ponds also have their share of detractors. When not properly designed or maintained, they can become eyesores, foster mosquitoes or pose public safety risks. They can also be expensive to maintain as accumulated sediment must be dredged periodically and may be contaminated requiring special disposal. And, at the end of the day, the “pipe-and-pond” approach does not eliminate flooding or pollution and threatens our aquifers by preventing water from soaking naturally into the ground. More recently, stormwater ponds are RAINWATER: TO NEXT PAGE

Rainwater FROM PREVIOUS PAGE increasingly being replaced with other approaches to stormwater management that minimize their drawbacks. For example, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has been working to promote the infiltration of rainwater where it falls. To that end, the District has been updating its Stormwater Management Rule, which focuses on managing stormwater runoff and pollutants from new development and redevelopment. To balance the need for community development with water resource protection, the revised rule exempts single-family homes, though voluntary efforts are possible and encouraged, and provides flexibility for challenging sites. Whether you’re a friend or foe of stormwater ponds, it’s important for everyone to understand that stormwater runoff is a problem, but a problem that can be mitigated. Simple approaches like planting trees and other vegetation and rain barrels can be combined with engineered solutions like infiltration basins and capture and reuse to reduce flooding, improve water quality, reduce the need for irrigation, and replenish groundwater. More information about proposed revisions to the District’s stormwater rule will be available at a public hearing tentatively scheduled May 5. Jim Calkins, Minnetonka, is president of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District Board of Managers and is an educator and landscape horticulturist. Confession from a one-time bully Edina ‘Reflections on Bullying’ event to be held April 26 BY HEATHER HAEN ANDERSON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CONNECTING WITH KIDS EDINA “Your hair looks dumb,” I scrawled on a piece of paper. With my friends urging me on, I folded up the note and stealthily dropped it on her lunch tray when she wasn’t looking. After she finished eating, I watched her empty the tray into the trash and pick up the note. She opened it, turned it right side-up and starting crying. Instantly, I felt terrible for what I did, and not just because those same friends who had been giggling in anticipation of her reaction were now telling me how mean I’d been. The girl’s hair was actually quite lovely. It was long and thick with wavy curls. She was shy and somewhat quiet, and I knew she wanted to join my group of friends. I didn’t care one way or
the other if she did, I just cared that she might upset the balance at the cafeteria lunch table – you know, too many people wanting to sit in a fixed amount of available space. When she tried to sit at our table, it meant that one of us would have to find another – in our minds, less desirable – place to eat lunch. Regretting what I’d done, I apologized to her before the bell rang. Reeling from the hurtful words, it didn’t matter to her that the note was untrue and that my apology was sincere. We never, to my recollection, spoke to each other again. At the time, I doubt any of us thought I was bullying the girl, though of course I was. It was just a regular lunchtime in the eighth grade and we were a bit bored. We’d looked around to see whom we could get a reaction from and she popped into view. Remembering how she reacted to the note and how I felt after I’d wronged her, I tried not to bully other classmates again. I had no desire to become one of the mean girls who flung barbs at every
passing student. Several decades later, I know that at times I have probably been unkind more than I intended, but my hope is always to be better than I was that day. Bullying has touched most everyone’s life at one time or another, either as the victim or the aggressor — or even as a bystander. From 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, in Fick Auditorium at Edina High School, our community will have the chance to reflect upon bullying and to discuss ways to lessen the impact it has in our lives. Called “Reflections on Bullying: Making the World a Better Place Where Bullying Doesn’t Happen,” the event will include an exhibit of submissions by community members, a showing of the film “Bullied,” and a post-movie dialogue led by a panel of local experts. Admission is free, though RSVPs are requested. For more information about this and other community events, please visit the Connecting With Kids website, ConnectingWithKidsEdina.org.

Richfield community gathers for Wellness Expo Fun run, classes and more educate residents on the event’s motto, “Go lean, go green’ BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Richfield community gathered for the 2011 Wellness Expo at the Richfield High School on April 9. ‘Go lean, go green,’ was the motto for the expo and resonated throughout the day. The morning started with the third annual Fun Run. “It was our best turn out in the three years we have had. A lot of people came with young kids and so I think it is really important that we are emphasizing wellness and running and fitness from such a young age,” Richfield High School Track Coach Dean Breuer said. The fastest time recorded was seven minutes and one second by a current

track athlete and a Richfield graduate. Other events included a flag football game, a free Jazzercise class, a gardening class instructed by the University of Minnesota Master Gardner’s club, Richfield Dual Language School Choir performance, a free Zumba fitness class, Dance Troupe performance and more. Over 35 vendors set up displays and handed out information on various community wellness organizations in the area. A Kid Zone was set up for youngsters to participate in games, face painting, hair decorations and a free book swap. “Any of us are aware of the news today, we are seeing that fitness is such a concern for people of all ages. This is a great opportunity for people to recognize the importance of healthy living, to find different ways to be healthier and relieve stress and just make their lives better,” Breuer said. Donations were made to the event by Richfield Credit Union, Richfield Public School, Richfield Community Education and the Richfield Advisory Board of Health.

Edina tree artist has show at Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Edina wood artisan Virgil Leih has returned to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen with a new 40-piece collection of full tree turnings. “Tree Trunk Treasures,” which opened Wednesday, April 13, in the Oswald Visitor Center, is the third annual showing of Leih’s works at the Arboretum. This time the pieces are smaller – between 10 and 18 inches – and range
in shape from spheroids to ellipsoids – some closed, some open – and all precisely turned on Leih’s lathes to bring out the hidden beauty of the wood grain. The works are created from Minnesota woods otherwise destined for landfill wood chippers and include maple, hackberry, ash, honey locust, walnut, oak and birch. Leih will offer “artist tours” from 1 to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday during the exhibit, which runs
through Sunday, May 8. All the exhibit pieces are for sale, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Arboretum. There are also several other events happening in conjunction with Leih’s show. Steve Tobin’s “Steelroots: Touching Earth & Sky,” an exhibition of 16 root-shaped sculptures, opens Saturday, April 16, and runs through Monday, Jan. 30, 2012. The Arboretum’s “Plantcetera: Get the Dirt on Growing” plant informa-
tion fair is also 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16. The 70-member Twin Cities Youth Symphonies’ Concert Orchestra will perform 2 p.m., Sunday, April 17. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, the largest public garden in the Upper Midwest, is located 9 miles west of I-494 on Highway 5 in Chanhassen. Admission is $9 for adults and free for ages 15 and younger. Info: arboretum.umn.edu.

Bloomington woman strives to maintain the life she knew
Vicki Peterson of Bloomington promotes her successful heart transplant more than three years ago each time she drives her vehicle in an attempt to inspire others to donate organs for life-saving transplants. (Photo by Roxi Rejali • Contributing Writer) BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER Nine months after receiving a heart transplant, Vicki Peterson finished a triathlon. She biked 10.2 miles, swam 400 yards and ran 2.5 miles to end the race in two hours. She was the last person to cross the finish line at the 2008 Minnewaska Triathlon in Glenwood, Minn. A group of family and friends cheered her on. “I wanted my life back, the way it was,” said Peterson, 54. “It was something for me to focus on during my recovery.” After surgeons replaced her failing heart with a healthy one from an anonymous donor in 2007, Peterson decided to enjoy her new lease on life. Since transplant surgery more than three years ago, the Bloomington resident returned to her job as a flight attendant for Sun Country Airlines. She has travelled to California, Florida, Sweden and Italy and enjoys sports like kayaking and biking with her husband Brian and three adult sons, Nathan, Blake and Brandon. Peterson is grateful for the gift of life, though she’s never met the family of the donor whose heart beats in her chest. “The way I live is really to honor them and be respectful of what they did, give this gift to me and I need to respect that,”
she said. “I want to work out, I want to eat healthy, I want to give back wherever I can, just out of respect for them.” April is National Donate Life Month and Peterson hopes her story will inspire others to register as organ donors. More than half of Minnesota residents have registered as organ donors through their driver’s licenses or state ID cards, said Rebecca Ousley, senior public relations coordinator at LifeSource, a nonprofit that manages organ and tissue donations in the upper Midwest. About 2,700 Minnesotans are waiting for organ transplants, or 110,000 nationally, she said. Every day, 18 Americans die waiting for a transplant. A 2005 health scare started Peterson’s transplant story. She fainted while working on a Sun Country flight and gashed her head on a cart lock, requiring a trip to an emergency room. Over the next eight days she lost consciousness up to 12 times a day. Searching for answers, Peterson visited several doctors and endured a battery of medical tests. Doctors couldn’t pinpoint the problem until a cardiologist reviewing electrocardiogram results recommended immediate surgery for an ICD, or implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Eight days later, the mechanical device was implanted in her chest to regulate her heartbeat.
Peterson later returned to work and resumed her normal activities, but by June 2006, she constantly felt tired and drained of energy. “Before the transplant, it got to the point where I was crawling up stairs or if I got on the floor, I couldn’t get up by myself,” she said. “Somebody had to help me with everything.” In September 2006, doctors told her that her heart was working at only 20-percent capacity and recommended an appointment with a heart transplant specialist. She sought a second opinion from the University of Minnesota, where doctors confirmed that a transplant was her only option and diagnosed her with sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease. Her name was placed on a heart transplant list and began rounds of testing and treatments designed to prevent her immune system from rejecting a transplanted heart. By September 2007 her condition had deteriorated so badly that she was hospitalized until a donor heart could be found. Two weeks later, a donor match was found. Three days after the October 2007 surgery her body began to reject the transplant, but a series of drug treatments and transfusions improved the symptoms. After leaving the hospital, check-ups were once a week. She eventually felt well enough to return to work, beginning with a desk job in February 2008. Doctors had said that she could never return to her old flight attendant job because of the possibility of infections in a closed cabin, but she pestered her doctors for permission to return to work. They reluctantly agreed, and by July 2009 she began flying again. “I
just didn’t see myself doing anything else,” Peterson said. “I’ve been doing this for 16 years and I love what I do and I love the people that I work with.” Peterson has always been strong-willed and resilient, said her friend Denise Engberg of Burnsville, who’s known Peterson since the 1970s. “Telling Vicki what she should be doing is like waving a red flag in front of her, like a bull,” Engberg said. “If you tell her she shouldn’t be doing something, she’s going to somehow try to find a way to do it.” Statistics show that average life expectancy for heart transplant recipients is 8-10 years, but Peterson plans to beat the odds. “I have lots of things on my ‘bucket list’ that I haven’t accomplished yet,” she said. “I want to work on that bucket list. I don’t want to miss any opportunities.“ For more information about organ and tissue donation, contact LifeSource at 651603-7800 or DonateLifeMN.org. No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

Microsoft opens high-tech office in Edina Company will relocate regional office this fall BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The top floor of one Edina office building can now store enough data to host the entire iTunes – or Zune – library. The high-tech facility in Centennial Lakes Office Park, 3601 W. 76th St., however, serves a basic purpose. “Our goals are real simple,” said Don Leeke, Microsoft general manager for the seven-state north central district, during an opening event for the Microsoft Technology Center Tuesday, April 5. Industry experts at the center help business leaders solve their tech-related problems in a matter of days or weeks, he said. Working alongside companies, as well as educational institutions and organizations, Microsoft can create custom IT solutions in areas ranging
from cloud computing to data sorting using its own and partner technologies. “It’s a purpose-built facility,” said Tim Floyd, director of the 16,815square-foot center, which officially opened about five weeks ago. “Every room we have is purpose-built for what we do.” It all starts in the “Envisioning Center,” or what he calls the “light bulb room.” In the sleek lab with theater seating, Microsoft shows it customers simulated work environments. “It really gets them thinking about how they can use software better,” he said. Then it’s on to a briefing room where they work with the customer to closely understand their goals. Detailed implementation measures are hashed out in multi-day or week architect design sessions, where a specific plan of action is created. In four proof-of-concept labs, actual technology solutions are built and tested. Each may need a dozen web
servers and large amounts of storage, all powered in the “Solutions Data Center,” what’s considered the heart of the facility. Over 21 miles of data cables connect with massive computers and servers in the glass-enclosed room. Microsoft partners like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, EMC and Polycom have invested more than $5.5 million in hardware. Floyd said the data center holds some of the newest equipment on the market, including partner APC’s firstever over-rack cooling system. The boxes atop each machine contain and then cool hot air they generate, keeping the data center at room temperature. Typically, he said, an entire data center would be cooled like a giant refrigerator. Microsoft currently operates 23 technology centers worldwide, including 11 in the U.S. Floyd said all of the centers are connected by network, enabling technology sharing and cross-country and around the globe work for customers with multiple loca-

tions, from Edina to Paris. At the end, the customer leaves with a detailed process for implementation. The Microsoft Technology Center also has training room with 24 workstations to familiarize employees with the new system. Floyd said Microsoft’s technology partners can help deploy the plan on-site. “The customers like it because it’s efficient,” said Floyd, an 18-year employee at the Microsoft’s regional office in Bloomington. They’re also fans of the center’s lounge area, he said, complete with Xbox Kinect, and its device bar with all the newest laptops, tablet PCs and smartphones for perusal. Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon, who toured the facility Tuesday, said it is vital for Minnesotans to have access to the latest technology to compete in an increasingly global economy. ‘Reader’s Digest’ swings by to distribute mini ‘stimulus packages’ BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS “Reader’s Digest” is rolling into three area cities to hand out some checks to their mayors. Three “ambassadors” from the publication are RV traveling to 100 cities across the country in 100 days as part of its, “We hear you America,” campaign. Along with Minneapolis and St. Paul, they are also rolling into Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka, where they’ll hand out $1,000 checks that the city can use as it wishes. Supermodel and “Celebrity Apprentice” reality television contestant Niki Taylor will join the “Reader’s Digest” in larger cities on the tour,
including Minneapolis. The RV was scheduled to arrive in Bloomington April 10, in Eden Prairie April 13 and Minnetonka April 14. The campaign started in November with online voting, where U.S. citizens could “cheer” or vote for their city as the best. “Vote early and often” rings true for this contest, since people can vote for their city online up to 10 times per day. Such freedom may have helped boost the total vote count reach 13 million. The ten cities with the most votes receive a delivered check – $40,000 for the top-voted city, $25,000 for the runnerup and up to $10,000 for the other eight. Prize delivery to the top ten cities,
along with 90 other cities that will receive a $1,000 check, began in January. All of the Minnesota cities on the tour stop were not in the top ten, but picked among the 90 cities added to the list. Jay Ramos, one of the three “Reader’s Digest” reps traveling crosscountry, said the campaign isn’t about boosting the publication’s circulation. Those 90 cities were chosen based the stories that people submitted as part of the “We Hear You America” campaign and if the cities were included in a couple of the periodical’s special publications in addition to the online voting. “I can’t speak to specificity of [circulation], but the choice of the cities are
not based on readership numbers,” Ramos said. “It’s due to the three components.” Ramos said when they stop at a city, they usually meet with community officials and curious residents. The RV’s public reception has varied at each city, he said. Those that received more votes online tend to have a few more visitors than cities that received fewer votes. With the seeming popularity of the campaign, “Reader’s Digest” has decided to start another round of voting, which runs March 8 to May 16, with another $145,000 in prizes for the top ten cities. Art and Music take over Holy Angels BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS The sound of music and the smell of paint radiated through the halls of Holy Angels Academy on April 8. Holy Angels in Richfield hosted the Missota Conference Music and Arts Festival. The Missota conference includes Holy Angels, Chanhassen High School, Chaska High School, Farmington High School, New Prague High School, Northfield High School, Redwing High School and Shakopee High School. The all-day event included clinics and workshops in both art and music. The art workshops included pinhole photography, book making, hanging sculp-
tures, plaster molds, Xerox transfer and mixed media drawing and a special ceramics workshop with Artist in Residence Aldo Moroni. Minn. artist Aldo Moroni is best known for his installation piece ‘Babylon.’ ‘Babylon,’ was created and then destroyed many times changing its appearance as it modeled the chronological progression of Mesopotamian history. The installation lasted from 2003 to 2009. On the musical side student musicians practiced with guest conductors such as Michael Culloton, Armando Saldarini, Lawrence E. Burnett and Douglas Nimmo. Over 1,000 students from Missota Conference schools attended the event. The day ended with a mass concert. Edina schools launch Young Scholars program BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kindergartner Sydney Dorvil wasn’t satisfied with problem No. 6. The task, which she tackled Tuesday morning, April 5, at Concord Elementary School, asked her to add a set number of pennies, nickels and dimes. “Is there a No. 10?” she asked Young Scholars teacher Erica Wattson, pointing to a stack of envelopes holding progressively more difficult questions. Sydney is one of about 40 Edina students participating in the Young Scholars pilot program introduced at Concord and Cornelia elementary schools this year. Young Scholars will expand to all Edina School District elementary schools next year with the exception of Normandale French Immersion. District officials hope the program will prepare bright students from populations typically underrepresented in its Gifted Education program and Advanced Placement classes for the challenging coursework, and reduce the racial achievement gap. “When we first looked at our data I think
‘Really what we want for all of our kids is to be the best they can be.’ — Mary Manderfeld assistant director of administrative services we went gulp,” said Debra Richards, Edina’s Gifted Education Services coordinator. She said nearly all students identified for Gifted Education through assessments are white or Asian, with few to zero students from other races. Mary Manderfeld, assistant director of administrative services, said Advanced Placement enrollment at Edina High School also does not reflect demographics in the district, where 15 percent of students report minority status. “We weren’t serving all of our students,” she said. dents with the creative- and critical-thinking skills and confidence to access gifted services. “Really what we want for all of our kids is to be the best they can be,” Manderfeld said. Young Scholars was started at Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia and has since been adopted at districts across the nation and in Minnesota, including the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District. “It’s really an unique opportunity for our district to try and meet the needs of all of our learners and a segment of our student population that is certainly very capable but hasn’t been present in our gift-
ed classes,” said Cornelia Principal Chris Holden. Traditional methods, such as formal testing to identify gifted students, might not catch a bright student who lacks academic vocabulary. Regular testing for Gifted Education also doesn’t begin until grade 3, but research shows early intervention is important. This year, 16 students at Concord and 28 students at Cornelia in grades K-2 were selected for the program. They meet with a specialist individually or in small groups for weekly activities. The part-time Young Scholars teachers are funded with a state integration grant. “There’s more than one way to a goal and this is another way to meet students needs,” said Concord Principal Rick Sansted. “Our teachers are always looking for ways to support all of our kids in our classrooms and this is a really important piece of that.” Working with classroom teachers, Richards and Young Scholars teachers selected the students following three visSCHOLARS: TO NEXT PAGE

Scholars FROM PREVIOUS PAGE its to each K-2 classroom at the schools last fall. They observed students doing activities around creative and analytical skills. “We looked for kids exhibiting gifted behavior but wouldn’t meet the criteria [for Gifted Education Services] based on achievement,” said Richards. Next year, the program will be expanded to Countryside, Creek Valley and Highlands elementary schools. Concord and Cornelia will each add an additional year, serving students through grade 3 Richards points out that Young Scholars is not a remedial program, but falls under Gifted Education Services in the Edina district. But, while Gifted Education Services are limited to about the top 10 percent of students, Young Scholars takes close to 20 percent of students in the three groups identified for participation. Those not selected the first year will have the chance to qualify again in following years. Others were passed over because they will likely already qualify for gifted programming.
Cornelia and Concord students began meeting with Young Scholars teachers in February at times they do not miss core reading and math instruction. Kindergarteners receive 30-minute sessions, while older students attend for 45minute sessions. Holden said it’s been an overall positive experience so far. “They like working on the problem solving units and the thinking skills they like spending some intense time around very engaging lessons,” he said. Before spring break, Gina Felton, Young Scholars teacher at Cornelia, asked her students what they like best about Young Scholars. “One said, ‘I think like an adult now,’” she said. “They’re energized about coming and doing the activities.” In June, the district will hold a fourday summer camp for Young Scholars. Wattson, who also teaches Gifted Education at Highlands, said she hopes to continue expanding opportunities and access for the students. She said she encourages students like Sydney, who push themselves at Young Scholars, to also ask their classroom teachers for top-level work. “The drive these little 5-year-olds have inspires me,” she said.

Sefon stars for Spartans in opening track meet Richfield senior wins two events in triangular BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield had a last-place finish in a boys track triangular against Edina and St. Louis Park April 7. But Spartan head coach Dean Breuer was encouraged by several top individual performances in the outdoor track season opener. Host Edina won the meet with 70 points. St. Louis Park finished second (59) and Richfield was third (50). “This first meet was a great opportunity to evaluate over 40 new members to our track program,” said Breuer. “Edina has a strong squad that will challenge for the state Class AA title in June. “Several seniors led the way for us in scoring, but we had good contributions from juniors and sophomores as well.” Senior Jordan Sefon placed first in two events for the Spartans. He won the long jump with an effort of 20 feet, 8.5 inches. He also was first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Sefon contributed to Richfield’s winning 4x400 relay as well. Zak Beaudet had a firstplace toss of 101-11.5 in the discus. He was fourth in the 800 (2 minutes, 17.81 seconds). Beaudet was also on Richfield’s winning 4x400 relay team and runner-up 4x800 relay squad. Max Hamilton finished first in the pole vault (10-6). Teammate Nelson Soto was second (9-6).

“Pole vaulters Hamilton and Soto got off to a good start. And newcomer Ali had a very good performance with his second-place finish in the 800.” Richfield’s boys track squad will compete in the Knights Under The Lights Invite at 4 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Irondale. That spot is a tough one, but he keeps battling hard
against good players. Lutteneggar and Pritchard are young singles players who should continue to improve.” Richfield’s singles lineup consists of Maki, Heckel, Pritchard and Lutteneggar. Senior Paul Youngblom and sophomore Tyler Stresnak are teamed at first doubles. Juniors Shawn Pandon and Ben Dimond play second doubles. Juniors Tim Harris and Andrew Perlich are paired at third doubles. “We had a large turnout of 30 players for our varsity and junior varsity teams,” said Herman. “And I’m proud that our players are also excellent students.”
Former Stars athlete returns to alma mater The Academy of Holy Angels has named Billy Hengen associate head coach for boys hockey. Hengen was an assistant coach at Holy Angels from 2006 to 2009. He was an assistant coach at Providence Academy in Plymouth during the 2010-11 season, helping that team post an 18-6-1 record. Hengen also coached the Blake Bantam B’s in 2007 when that team won a state title. Hengen is a Holy Angels hockey alumnus and remains the school’s leading goal scorer with 102. He also had 118 assists and 220 points in his career. Before college, Hengen played two seasons for the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League. Hengen played college hockey at St. Cloud State from 2002 to 2006. He finished as one of the team’s leading scorers for three consecutive seasons. “I had the privilege of playing for Greg Trebil in high school and helping Holy Angels to its first state tournament appearance,” said Hengen. “Coach Trebil gave me my first coaching job as an assistant after college, and I had the opportunity to learn from him and the coaching staff for three years. “Now, I look forward to the opportunity to take on a larger role as an associate head coach and to add to the program as much as possible.” Hengen is chief executive officer and co-founder of Splayback.com, a sports video highlight film and fundraising company. – COMPILED BY GREG KLEVEN
