City of Richfield continues to address aging streets, need for attention on county routes

The Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield has received a $7,800 grant from the Minnesota Independent School Forum to develop their STEM

program. The Holy Angel’s STEM program features a pilot project called “Make the Connection.” The goal of Make the Connection is to enhance the core educational values of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) instruction. The grant will fund an opportunity for two teachers to earn a graduate engineering certificate at the University of St. Thomas. ANGELS: TO PAGE 20

A bumpy road Richfield Public Works described “the good, the bad and the ugly” during a presentation on city streets in Richfield at the April 26 special workshop session at City Hall. The good refers to the pavement management program the city has in place. The program, set in motion ten years ago, features the city’s rigorous maintenance of city streets, according to Richfield City Manager Steven Devich. “If some one would have told us that the streets would have kept together this long, I would have told them they were crazy,” Devich said. The last of the city’s “permanent street” construction took place in 1976. According to Devich, the lifespan of an average street is only about 30 years and the city of Richfield has not constructed a wholesale replacement since the permanent street construction. The bad is the condition of 76th Street.

Richfield elementary principal tapped for Wayzata position BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS After seven years in the Richfield Public Schools, Principal Jason Wenschlag of Sheridan Hills Elementary School was chosen to take on the principal position at Birchview Elementary in the Wayzata School District. “There are a lot of unique opportunities that I am looking at in the Wayzata district,” said Wenschlag.

Wenschlag said he feels the Wayzata schools have a very strong partnership with the parents and the community. “It has a lot of opportunity for growth because you are surrounded by excellence,” Wenschlag said. Wenschlag was torn by his decision to go after the job opportunity. “I feel a sense of loss. People on the outside don’t know how special Richfield is. Sheridan Hills is a wonderful little school with great families and

Schools. The position became available after former Birchview Principal Dr. Tom Koch announced his retirement after 11 years with the Wayzata schools. The finalists met on April 28, with an interview committee for the final interviews. The committee consisted of a Wayzata school board member, three licensed and two non-licensed Birchview staff members, two parents with children at Brichview, two district principals, two district directors and the executive director of human resources. Wenschlag said he feels his relationships with his staff over his years within Richfield schools have allowed them to be very understanding of his personal and professional pursuits and attraction to Wayzata. “Looking ahead, my wife and I feel Wayzata is a place we want to raise a family,” he said. The official decision to accept the recommendation of Wenschlag from the interview committee will be announced at the Wayzata School Board meeting Monday, May 9.

urban issues. “The New Metropolis, is about cities, like Richfield, that were built right after the war and their infill structures are wearing away, Devich said. The first episode, called, “A Crack in the Pavement, features the precarious state of many older, first-ring suburbs by profiling two small town officials from Ohio, according to the synopsis. Devich feels Richfield is a firststring suburb and the problems happening in the featured Ohio city could be happening in Richfield. “Richfield is an anomaly. We attack our issues and take the steps to maintain our infill structures, Devich said. Devich invites the community to view the program and see how Richfield is leading the way in the Twin Cities for city maintenance.

FBI seeks information about robbery suspect Robbery in Eden Prairie, attempted in Bloomington SUN NEWSPAPERS STAFF REPORT The FBI is seeking information about a man who robbed two banks and attempted to rob another bank Tuesday, April 26. The banks were located in Eden Prairie, Bloomington and Faribault, according to Richard T. Thornton, acting special agent in charge of the Minneapolis FBI Office. According to the FBI: Just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, an employee of the United Educator’s Credit Union located at 7912 Eden Road, Suite B, in Eden Prairie, unlocked the bank’s front door to allow a man into the bank. The man had been knocking on the door while waiting in the rain. The bank was scheduled to open at 8:30 a.m. The man had his back to the front door as it was being unlocked for business. Once the door was opened, the man turned around and displayed a handgun

to the employee. He said, “This is a robbery. Don’t call the police. The robber walked to the teller counter and demanded money. The only teller on duty gave the robber an undisclosed amount of cash, including a dye pack. The robber left the bank on foot and was last seen around the parking lot. Subsequent investigation revealed that the dye pack exploded outside the bank, and some money was recovered in the parking lot. Shortly after, around 9:15 a.m., a man entered the Richfield-Bloomington Credit Union located at 4025 West Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. He walked directly to the teller counter and displayed a handgun to the teller on duty. The robber demanded money, and the teller then walked to a nearby, glassed area located behind the teller counter. The robber then left the bank ROBBERY: TO PAGE 20

Online school helps tennis player study from afar BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER Erik Nordahl wakes up at the crack of dawn to run sprints and two-mile runs. That’s a warm-up for at least four hours of tennis training and practice every day. It’s part of the 17-year-old’s plan to become a topranked college tennis player and then hit the professional circuit. In United States Tennis Association (USTA) competition last year, Nordahl was ranked 25th nationally in the age 16 category. As an Edina high-school sophomore he was runner-up in the 2010 state singles tournament. As a freshman he won the 2009 state doubles championship with teammate Steven Pjevach. “I’ve always loved tennis. I feel like I’m one of the most competitive people out there,” said Nordahl, currently a junior. Nordahl attended Bloomington schools through seventh grade and later attended and played tennis at Edina through open enrollment. These days he calls Eden Prairie home, where his mother lives, when his busy schedule allows him a visit to Minnesota. Last year Nordahl decided to step up his tennis training at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch near San Antonio, Texas. The full-time academy’s weekday schedule is rigorous; students rise at 6:30 a.m. and turn out the lights by 10:30 p.m. Schedules for about 100 students are packed with tennis drills, matches and fitness training. Nordahl’s discipline and hard work resulted in a 100-

position jump in his rankings last year, said academy director Phil Hendrie. “Erik improved in his national ranking more than I’ve seen anybody improve in that space of time,“ Hendrie said. His speed, endurance and self-confidence will pave the way to college and a possible professional career, Hendrie said. “Erik’s strength, mentally, is that he believes in himself,” Hendrie said. “He believes that when he goes on the court, his work ethic is going to allow him to wear people down and to find a way to win the match.” At the academy, Nordahl completes schoolwork through the Insight School of Minnesota, an online public school based in Brooklyn Center. During several mandatory study sessions every day, he logs onto his laptop computer to complete assignments and discuss schoolwork with teachers. His courses include honors English and Advanced Placement biology, world history and economics. He maintains a 4.0 grade point average. Nordahl does well with online coursework because he’s a disciplined and motivated student-athlete, said his English teacher Katie Schultz. “Students like Erik have already demonstrated that they can multi-task and be successful in numerous things at once,” she said. Nordahl’s accomplishments extend beyond the tennis court. As children, Nordahl and his older sister Lilly were encouraged to excel academically and to try a wide range of activities. Leaders need to step up to protect teens from STIs BY DR. ALAN LIFSON • GUEST COLUMNIST Health authorities expressed alarm by new statistics from the Health Department that the number of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Minnesota had reached an all-time high. Chlamydia, the most common STI with more than 40 new cases per day, is highest in 15- to 24-year-olds, with the greatest increases in the suburbs. The number of new syphilis cases doubled in the past year. How are we failing Minnesota’s youth? Five years from now, a young woman who went to school in Edina may be told that she is unable to ever have children because of chronic scarring of her reproductive organs due to untreated Chlamydia infection. Five years from now, a young man who went to school in Bloomington may be told that the reason he is losing weight and has chronic fungal infections in his mouth is

because he has HIV infection. These infections might have been prevented if as adolescents this young man and woman had the knowledge and skills to protect themselves. How can we do this? First, we need comprehensive sexual education in our schools, so that our young people can learn in a balanced and accurate way how to protect themselves against STIs. That our state legislature consistently refuses to support such a measure is a disgrace. Second, we need a strong public health infrastructure, to both keep track of cases that occur and provide needed interventions. Drinking, drug use or emotional problems may increase the risk of unsafe behaviors. We need strong programs for mental and chemical health for our young people to help treat the underlying causes that may lead our youth to engage in unsafe sex.

The fact that budget-cutting legislatures at both the state and national levels are slashing such programs makes our youth more vulnerable and less protected. Third, our youth need to know that there are ways that they can be confidentially tested and treated for STIs. If we don’t respect their privacy, they won’t trust us. The fact that our state lwegislature is currently considering a bill to remove minor consent protections will only serve to foster this mistrust. As much as we would like to pretend that our youth are not having unprotected sex, this flies in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. According to a 2010 Minnesota student survey, 20 percent of ninth graders and 50 percent of 12th graders have had sexual intercourse. Rates of sexual activity were comparable across STIS: TO NEXT PAGE

This Mother’s Day, offer your help – not just your thanks SARAH PETERSON Copy Manager Sun Newspapers

From my observations, mothers are often honored on Mother’s Day with a card, flowers and a simple “thank you.” Sometimes they are taken out to lunch at a restaurant – that’s one less meal to prepare and fewer dishes to wash, thank goodness. But that really doesn’t seem like much. So here’s a simple tip for husbands and significant others this Mother’s Day: Offer to help around the house, whether that means cooking, cleaning, laundry or other chores the wonderful woman in your life does regularly.

If you’re ready to go beyond the basics, then ask her what she thinks needs to be done. You’ll score some great brownie points that way. Not only are you helping her work on her own “honey-do” list, you’re also showing her that her priorities can be your priorities. You’re offering to share her burdens. That’s better than a bouquet of flowers any day. The best part is, you don’t have to wait for Valentine’s or Mother’s Day to roll around. This trick is good every day of the year. I hadn’t thought about it before, but this really does impress someone who does a lot of the household chores. Get out of work, go home, and there’s another long to-do list waiting for you on the table, MOTHER’S DAY: TO NEXT PAGE

Mother’s Day FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and the list hasn’t changed much from when you wrote it two days ago. Maybe you’ve crossed one task off and added two more. I didn’t come up with this idea on my own. In fact, my own husband is the catalyst for this column. He called me one recent Wednesday afternoon as he was driving from work. He knew he would beat me home by at least an hour, so he called me at my office desk line. “Can you think of anything that needs to get done?” he asked. “You mean, in the way of chores at

home?” I responded in wonder. Yep, that’s what he was calling about. He was saying that, although he was just leaving work, he was ready to go home and start working on dishes, sweeping or vacuuming. He wanted to know, what’s on my to-do list, and what should he start on first when he gets home? I knew before that he was good, but I sometimes forget he’s that good. Bragging rights awarded, it wasn’t two minutes after I got off the phone that I had to tell some of my other married coworkers how lucky I am. Brownie points? Oh, you betcha. I think they’re the peanut-butter-chocolate brownie kind. The ones that melt in your mouth and remind you of Reese’s peanut butter cups. The recipe he likes in particular. That kind of brownie points.

For the 19th consecutive year, Denise Blumberg-Tendle is not walking in the Race for the Cure. A breast cancer survivor, BlumbergTendle has never had the time to participate, she is too busy each year working as a volunteer during the race. That will be no different this year during the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which begins and ends Sunday morning, May 8, outside Mall of America in Bloomington. Blumberg-Tendle of Plymouth had been a volunteer for the American Cancer Society when the first Race for the Cure was held in 1993. Her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1977, and had successful surgery and treatment, Blumberg-Tendle recalled. But years later her mother’s cancer returned. Her mother’s second bout with breast cancer ended with her death, a death that preceded BlumbergTendle’s own breast cancer diagnosis by a few months in 1989, she explained. “I thought I was going to suffer and die like my mom did,” she said. Blumberg-Tendle detected her cancer early, however, and not only survived, but has also become a significant part of the local effort to fight breast cancer. “We’ll continue holding this event until there is a cure,” she said. Having been a caregiver for her mother during her second bout with breast cancer, and surviving it herself, Blumberg-Tendle “wanted to do something to make a difference,” she said. “I know what it’s like to lose someone you love.” The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation didn’t have a Twin Cities

Did you know? • There were 64 participants who raised $1,000 or more through pledges on 2010. • Those 64 participants raised more than $130,000, an average of more than $2,000 per person. • Participants consumed more than 65,000 bottles of donated Chippewa water at the 2010 race. • The ration of women to men participating in the event is about 3:1. • The oldest participant in 2010 was a 96-year-old breast cancer survivor. chapter in the early 1990s, so BlumbergTendle became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. When planning was underway for the inaugural Race for the Cure in 1993, a friend recommended that Blumberg-Tendle join the organization. From that point on “I redirected my volunteer efforts toward Race for the Cure.” Blumberg-Tendle helped with communications prior to the first race, and was there to assist at the race in 1993. She returned year after year, eventually serving as chairwoman of the race in 2000 and 2001. In 2009 she was hired as the mission manager for the Minnesota chapter. Her duties as mission manager include overseeing the grant program that provides funding to a variety of educational programs and services involved in the fight against breast cancer. Blumberg-Tendle never imagined she’d be so heavily involved with the organization when she volunteered for its first race in 1993. Now she works full time on behalf of an organization and cause she believes in. “It was like a dream come true for me,” she said.

A gathering of thousands The race attracts thousands of breast cancer survivors, their supporters and friends and family of breast cancer victims. Some simply pay the registration fee and participate in the five-kilometer walk or race outside the mall, or the onekilometer walk inside the mall. Others raise pledges in conjunction with their

participation, Blumberg-Tendle said. On race day the registration fee is $35 for adults, $17 for children 12 and under. The fees are reduced for those who register online prior to race day. The first of the events is the start of the wheelchair 5K race at 7:25 a.m., followed by the 5K run at 7:30. The 5K walk begins at 9, with the 1K walk beginning at 9:30 on the mall’s second floor. A health expo and refreshments are available in the north parking lot from 7-10, and a survivor celebration commences at 11 on the first floor of the mall. A Kids for the Cure Fun Run is 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, in the north parking lot at Mall of America. Registration for the run being at 2. The organization directs 75 percent of its proceeds to Minnesota programs and services, with 25 percent going to the national chapter, which funds programs and services around the country, Blumberg-Tendle explained. The Minnesota affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure receives a variety of donations throughout the year – from refreshments for race day to office space inside Mall of America – to keep its overhead expenses to 11 percent of money raised through the race and other fundraising mechanisms, she noted.

Getting around Parking will be available in the IKEA lot across from the mall, in the Mall of America ramps and in the Kelly lot on the east side of the mall. Metro Transit Light Rail to the mall will also be available. Lane and road closures are scheduled for Killebrew Drive, Lindau Lane and 24th Avenue near the mall. Additional lane closures will occur on Old Shakopee Road from Killebrew Drive to 86th Street, 86th Street from Old Shakopee Road to 12th Avenue, 12th Avenue from 86th Street to American Boulevard and American Boulevard from 12th Avenue to 24th Avenue. The course will reopen to traffic when the last walkers pass by. Organizers anticipate the entire course to be open by noon, according to Bloomington Police. More than 50,000 participants, volunteers and spectators are expected to attend. Information and registration is available online at racecure.org.

Texas grub:

Dickey’s saucy menu arrives in Plymouth

BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Minnesota from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. It seemed like a good fit. The Shakopee store opened in April 2010 and they say response has been great. Opening restaurants in an economic environment that can only be described as unfriendly has raised some eyebrows, the Snovers admit. But the sluggish economy served as a plus. Both locations are former Umbria Pizza outlets. That company, another franchise operation, locked its doors in Shakopee in 2009 and later closed in Plymouth. Leases on both locations were “great deals,” Eric said, plus a good portion of the equipment left behind has been put to use. What wasn’t usable was auctioned. The quick-serve barbecue chain has grown from 26 stores in 1999 to 120 in 2010. The company’s growth rate the past two years has averaged 35 percent, the company claims. Dickeys began franchising in 1994. “Our progress is surprising to a lot of folks, but it makes sense,” said Roland Dickey Jr., president of Dickeys. “People want to get out of the rat race and own their own business. In turn, these new stores are employing lots of people who otherwise would still be looking for jobs.” The Plymouth franchise averages 15 to 20 workers, many of them line servers. A vital job is placing the meats in the

Plymouth and Wayzata area residents no longer have to catch a plane to get a mouth full of Texas-style barbecue. A franchise of Dickey’s Barbecue Restaurants Inc. opened earlier this year on Vicksburg Lane in Plymouth. The eatery held its grand opening last week. “We were waiting for better weather,” said Eric Snover, co-owner. His younger brother, Jon, is in the business with him. Together the Edina natives also operate a franchise in Shakopee that has been open for a year. The restaurants offer ribs, chicken, pork, hot links and brisket, most of which is hickory smoked in a large proprietary smoker. Diners can also select a variety of salads, sides and desserts. The Snover brothers both recommend the chopped brisket to the 250 or so customers who visit the Plymouth store each day, mostly for lunch. Eric was the first to encounter the Dickey’s product while attending Southern Methodist University, a private school with 11,000 students located in the heart of Dallas. “It was my favorite place to get barbecue,” said Eric, 27, noting that the opportunities for saucy dining were far greater there than in Minnesota. After returning home to Edina after college, Eric began job-hunting. Finding few options, he turned his attention to researching franchises and remembered his Dickey’s experience. Jon had also recently returned to

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Richfield teams up with Crime Stoppers The Richfield Police Department is teaming up with Crime Stoppers of Minnesota to help citizens anonymously pass on information to help solve crimes. Through this partnership, the Richfield police continue to support the building of awareness and use of systems available through Crime Stoppers to collect information about crimes. Citizens who may be reluctant to step forward with information about a crime or fugitive directly to the police but who still want to ‘do the right thing’ can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously and the information will then be shared with Richfield police or whichever agency the tip information leads to. It is common for somebody to have information but reluctant to come forward, as the Department of Justice reports that less than 50 percent of crime is reported to the authorities. Tips to Crime Stoppers of Minnesota have been increasing and shared last year with 103 different law enforcement agencies across Minnesota reflecting the

willingness of people to come forward anonymously to help solve a crime. Persons giving tips to Crime Stoppers stay anonymous and may be eligible to collect up to $1,000 in reward. With these additional methods for citizens to turn in tips, Richfield police may save thousands of dollars worth of investigators’ time, speed the solving of cases and help bring comfort to the victims of a crime. People with knowledge about a crime or a fugitive can submit information to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS [8477], going online at CrimeStoppersMn.org or by texting a cell phone message beginning with TIP674, then the message and send to CRIMES [274637]. Crime Stoppers’ procedures accept tips in any language by phone; in English, Spanish, French or Somali on the Internet, and keep the identity of the tipster anonymous. If the tip leads to an arrest or charging the tipster may qualify to receive a reward of up to $1,000 and still remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers of Minnesota is a non-profit organization operating separate and independent of government and law enforcement.

Musical Instrument Drive Classical Minnesota Public Radio, in partnership with the Minnesota Music Educators Association, presents its second annual benefit for Minnesota schools, “Play It Forward: Classical MPR’s Musical Instrument Drive.” The program will run May 2 through May 31. The drive establishes local Minnesota schools as drop-off points for individuals to donate their gently used instruments. As of April 26, more than 260 schools have signed up to participate in this year’s drive. “Last year’s response was so amazing — more than 600 donations to over 300 schools — that doing it again was a ‘nobrainer,’” says Daniel Gilliam, program director for Classical MPR. “For us, putting instruments into the hands of young people, who need and want to play music, is a higher calling.” Donors will again be able to give their instruments directly to the school of their choice. They can visit classicalmpr.org/playitforward and enter their zip code to find out which schools are accepting

instruments and the donation drop-off times. Donations are tax deductible and donors are responsible for assessing the value of their own instrument. Schools are accepting brass, woodwinds, string instruments, concert percussion (snare drums) and acoustic guitars — although each school will determine which instruments it needs. Program partner Vega Productions will accept any electronic instruments, accordions, keyboards, pianos, organs, and drum sets. If the instrument is in need of repair, the school can assess whether or not the instrument can be repaired. Donated instruments will belong to the school. School-owned instruments are loaned free of charge to students who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs for use in band or orchestra. Often, students receiving instruments from their school cannot otherwise participate in their school’s music program. “Play it Forward: Classical MPR’s Musical Instrument Drive” is made possible in part by the Minnesota Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Sky Deck brings new look to Mall of America venue BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS There’s a new place for fun in your life at Mall of America, and it will have a familiar look to those who have visited the mall’s fourth floor in the past. Sky Deck Sports Grille & Lanes opened Monday, and the concept is nothing new to the mall. Sky Deck is the reopening of the former Jillian’s bowling alley and arcade that operated at the mall. Jillian’s closed about six years ago after being bought out by the Dave & Buster’s chain a year earlier. Monday’s opening marks the return of the corporate parent that first opened the bowling alley and entertainment center. The second coming of the bowling alley and entertainment complex differs from how Jillian’s was operated in the past, according to General Manager Brian Newman. Sky Deck will have a full menu of American cuisine – including burgers, sandwiches, steak and walleye – and a sports bar area with multiple projection and high-definition televisions in “a family-friendly venue,” he said. The transformation from what used

to be Jillian’s to what is now Sky Deck happened rapidly. The bowling lanes and infrastructure for the bar and restaurant have been sitting unused at the mall since the closing of Jillian’s in 2005. The bar and dining areas were reconfigured to increase seating space for the restaurant, but it took just weeks rather than months to ready Sky Deck for its 2011 debut, Newman explained. “It’s like buying a good house, you just have to put a facelift on it.” Several pool tables will be available at Sky Deck, and there is a variety of video games in the arcade. Multi-player racing games, classic video games of the 1980s and games of skill and chance that earn tickets toward prizes can all be found in the arcade area. The bowling alley features 12 lanes with cosmic lighting, as well as a sound and video system to liven up a 10-frame game. “The bowling alley will definitely have its own heartbeat,” Newman said. Sky Deck is available for corporate events, alumni gatherings and birthday parties, catering to groups as large as 500, according to Jim Dobbe, the event sales manager for the venue.

Mall of America approached JBC Entertainment Holdings, the corporate parent of Sky Deck, last fall about reopening the fourth floor venue, according to Newman. “Over the past few years, Mall of America ownership has explored different opportunities to bring the family-friendly entertainment we have mall-wide up to the fourth floor,” according to Dan Jasper, director of public relations for the mall. “We’re excited to welcome Sky Deck

as we believe it will be a great place for families to visit to enjoy bowling, games and a great meal,” Jasper added. “We also think it will offer more for our male demographic as it will have multiple screens for the ultimate sports watching experience.” Sky Deck is open daily, 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., and is restricted to adults 21 and older at 10 p.m. It’s website, still in development, will be skydecklanes.com.

The robber then left the bank on foot and was last seen headed in a southbound direction through the parking lot. The FBI believes the same individual is responsible for the two bank robberies and the attempted bank robbery. The same individual is also believed to be responsible for the robbery of the Sterling Bank in Savage, on April 11, and the robbery of the U.S. Federal Credit Union in Northfield, on April 14. The robber was described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, between

5’9” and 6’ tall, medium build and grey or hazel eyes. He was wearing white tennis shoes, blue jeans, a dark sweatshirt, a black hooded jacket, a black mask, a black knit hat and black gloves. No one was injured during the robberies. The FBI requests that anyone with information regarding these bank robberies contact the authorities involved in the case. Nordahl FROM PAGE 4 Nordahl tried tennis, baseball, basketball, hockey, piano and art. Tennis was his favorite. His mother Fawn Chang lives in Eden Prairie, his father Tom Nordahl lives in Bloomington; the couple is divorced. Nordahl began playing tennis at age 5 and he remembers waking up in the middle of the night to watch his heroes Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras play in Australian Open tournaments. Worried about sports injuries, his mother tried to steer Nordahl toward piano. He began playing at age 5 and won several area junior piano competitions. By age 11 he had performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. “Piano was very promising for me, but I always felt like my passion was on the court,” he said. “I always felt a pull, it’s kind of almost like a magnetic pull that would bring me back to the tennis courts.” Several colleges are recruiting Nordahl for their tennis programs and he recently visited Harvard University and Princeton University campuses to meet with coaches. He expects to make a college decision by early fall, at the beginning of his senior year. He hopes to prepare for a professional career by learning from top college coaches and players. “I’d love to continue that after college,” he said. “But at the same time, I know how difficult being a professional athlete is and how risky it is, sometimes. I also want to be able to have a solid degree from a great school so that I can have something to fall back on, if my dreams don’t end up coming through.”

Angels FROM PAGE 1 “This grant will give our teachers new tools to develop basic research projects for the classroom designed to stimulate students’ creativity and problem-solving abilities, to introduce the inquiry method of problem solving, to help students see the link between science and math, and to develop student interest in science, math and technology careers,” Holy Angels’ President Dr. Jill Reilly said. The two teachers selected are chemistry teacher Lee Jones and math teacher Lindsey Stone. “They are extremely excited and grateful to have been selected,” Science Department Chair Steve Vopatek said. As part of the grant requirements these teachers will learn new STEM tools to develop strategies for the classroom to connect science and math to involve the real world and students. “It is very important for our science and math teachers to help our students see the connection between what they’re studying in the classroom and what happens beyond school walls,” Reilly said. The teachers will also be required to train other faculty members in integrated STEM activities appropriate to their fields. All training will be conducted through the Holy Angel’s Professional Learning Community model that has been in place for several years. The training will begin as soon as the teachers begin school this fall.

Streets FROM PAGE 1 “Most of the complaints we get are of the county roads, but we know 76th Street is a problem,” Devich said. According to Richfield’s Operations Manager of Streets and Forestry, Chris Link, city crews will replace the portion of 76th Street between 13th and 14th Avenues this summer. “76th Street is by far our worst road, but we will be taking care of it,” said Link.

“It is very important for our science and math teachers to help our students see the connection between what they’re studying in the classroom and what happens beyond school walls.” - Holy Angels’ President Dr. Jill Reilly According to Vopatek, Holy Angels already encourages students considering a future in engineering to enroll in four years of math and science and to take advantage of the school’s Advanced Placement computer science class as well as architectural model building and computer-aided design courses. As part of Vopatek’s Advanced Placement chemistry class, offered at Holy Angels, students are required to create a chemical engineer project by building a working galvanized cell model. “We need more than one class in our school to do STEM work,” Vopatek said. The grant will help teachers in those classes give students a clearer picture of how the skills they learn in school will translate to college and the workplace. Holy Angels is one of two schools to receive STEM Professional Development Mini-Grant Pilot Awards this spring. The award winners will be honored during a celebration at St. Catherine University on May 5.

Lastly, the ugly in Richfield are the roads maintained by Hennepin County. “I think it is unacceptable for the conditions of the county streets and it paints a bad picture of Richfield,” Public Works Director Mike Eastling said. The county roads in Richfield are 66th Street, Portland Avenue, Nicollet Avenue and Penn Avenue. The county roads are in the worst condition, but they also carry the most traffic and for that reason it is difficult to discern the need of maintenance for residential to community roads, according to Link. League FROM PAGE 1 The topics featured in the past include a segment dedicated to the new Richfield STEM School, where the women invited Principal Joey Page to discuss the in and outs of the program. The most recent topic focused on the latest news in gardening. In this segment, the guests panelists featured expertise in community gardening, vegetable gardening and rain gardening. The next installment will air on Saturday, May 14, and will feature what is happening in the summer of 2011 in Richfield. The panelists will discuss the Richfield Fourth of July Celebration, the Richfield Farmers Market, Wood Lake Nature Center and the Richfield Ambassadors program. Questions about the popular Richfield event ‘Lunch in the Park’ will be addressed and answered, according to Scaglia. The Richfield League of Women Voters developed this cable program 15 years ago. “It is a challenge each month, but really very fun,” Lofstrom said. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The Richfield league currently has 31 members. For more information on the league or joining, call 612-869-3772 or visit lwvmn.org.

Sandahl said that the council needed to begin to put more pressure on Hennepin County to fix the roads the county is responsible for in Richfield. Mayor Debbie Goettel confirmed that the council would. The goal of the presentation was to remind the council that keeping up with the pavement management program, by not reducing funds, will allow the city to save in the long run. According to Devich, to replace all of the city streets, it would cost Richfield $100 million, as opposed to the $800,000 a year the city pays into the program. “A base replacement of a street costs far more than what we pay to maintain

them,” Devich said. One of the most effective ways the city does to maintain the streets is to use mill and overlay. The process of mill and overlay is where a milling machine mills off the original asphalt pavement and new asphalt is overlaid by means of a paver, according to Link. The overarching sentiment of the meeting was that the city of Richfield, by way of the public works department, is doing all that they can to extend the life of the city roads and save as many resources as they can. “Thank you from the city and keep up the good work,” said Goettel.

Spartans’ girls golf team relies on co-captains Seniors Westman, Matuke provide solid leadership BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Senior co-captains Alex Westman and Miranda Matuke have provided more than good leadership for the Richfield girls golf team. They also have been two of the Spartans’ best players. Westman shot a 5-over-par 40 in a nine-hole Classic Suburban Conference tournament April 20 at Oak Marsh in Oakdale. Richfield placed second of eight teams in the conference tourney with a score of 189, one stroke behind first-place Simley. Westman ranks second in the conference individual standings. She was all-conference last season. Matuke shot a 47 at Oak Marsh and ranks eighth in the league. “Those senior co-captains are working hard and helping our younger players,” said Richfield head coach Jeff Running. “We are hoping to finish third or better in the final conference standings.” Richfield will compete in the Class 3A, Section 6 tournament in a few weeks. Defending champion Edina will provide a strong challenge for the Spartans, as will teams such as Wayzata and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Other members of Richfield’s varsity golf squad are juniors Maddy Hanson, Madison Andrews and Aly Niesen, plus eighth-grader Sophie Webster. Richfield will compete in another Classic Suburban Conference tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 5, at Highland National Golf Course. The Spartans will participate in the Hill-Murray Invitational at 10 a.m. Monday, May 9, at Oak Glen Golf Course.

Richfield repeats as boys team champion Sefon claims three firsts to lead squad to victory BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The return of springlike weather April 28 brought out the best in the Richfield boys track team at the Spartan Invitational. Richfield repeated as team champion, scoring 202 points. Hastings was second (173) and Simley placed third (101). Rounding out the team standings were Park Center (94), East Ridge (54), Columbia Heights (37) and Park of Cottage Grove (24). “Everyone in our lineup made a huge contribution to this victory,” said Richfield head coach Dean Breuer. “This championship is a classic definition of a team title. “Our top performers did what we expected them to do, but we would not have won the meet without performances we got in scoring points for fourththrough eighth-place finishes. We continue to get better as a team because of the depth we have in this year’s lineup.” Richfield won three relays. The Spartans’ winning 4x800-meter relay consisted of Collin Randolph, Obsa Ali, Moses Mugwanja and Zak Beaudet. Richfield’s time was 8 minutes, 34.92 seconds. Members of Richfield’s first-place 4x200 relay were Wibi MacDonald, John Johnson, Brian Christian and Cassius Cox. They had a time of 1:37.25. Richfield won the 4x100 relay in 46.59 seconds. Losing pitcher Zoellmer struck out three and allowed four hits in seven innings. Phil Peterson had two hits, including a double. St. Thomas Academy beat Richfield 63 April 25.
