Thanksgiving may have new meaning for a Minnetonka man. While refereeing Edina Hockey Association’s annual Thanksgiving tournament, Kevin Whipple went into sudden cardiac arrest. Quick action from parents in the stands, an on-site Emergency Medical Technician and the presence of an AED device “literally saved his life, no question about it,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. A week after the incident, Whipple said he’s doing “pretty darn good, all things considered.” He hopes to be back officiating in a month. A Richfield man with three driving while impaired convictions during the past 10 years is facing a first-degree DWI charge after a low-speed pursuit and confrontation with Bloomington police. The 38-year-old man was charged Nov. 30 in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of driving while impaired. If convicted he faces 3-7 years in prison and a fine of up to $14,000. The man was arrested following a report of a possible drunken driver Nov. 28 at T.G.I. Friday’s in Bloomington. The man appeared to be intoxicated and refused recommendations to take a taxi home from the restaurant near Bloomington’s Mall of America, according to the complaint. FROM PREVIOUS PAGE man’s red Chevrolet Blazer was parked in the lot of a nearby restaurant. They observed the man leave the parking area, exit onto Old Shakopee Road and drive westbound toward Highway 77, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The man weaved as he drove westbound at approximately 11 p.m. He turned onto the entrance ramp for Highway 77 north and nearly hit a light pole along the shoulder of the road as he made his way toward the highway, Stehlik said. Officers following the man attempted to make a traffic stop, but the

man ignored them and headed north on Highway 77 at approximately 30 mph, Stehlik noted. The man exited at Killebrew Drive and drove back to the restaurant parking area where the pursuit initially began. In the parking lot the man was instructed by police to exit the vehicle with his hands up. He said he was going to park the vehicle instead and proceeded to do so. He then exited the vehicle and approached officers, ignoring orders to stop and put his hands up, Stehlik explained. Officers forced the man to the ground and eventually handcuffed him, despite his resistance, Stehlik said. The man made threats toward offi-

cers before and after his arrest. When the handcuffs were removed for a Breathalyzer test at the Bloomington police station the man raised his fists and made another threat toward officers. He was shot twice with a Taser after disregarding police orders, Stehlik noted. The man never submitted to any tests of his level of intoxication. He was previously convicted for driving while impaired in October 2001, December 2002 and May 2004. His license was canceled at the time of his arrest and his vehicle was impounded, according to the complaint.

Two summers ago, Edina resident Paul Axt boarded a plane for northern California. The owner of Bloomington-based MTI Inc., a sales agency for out-of-state manufacturers, had a potential new client. But the product, charging stations for electric vehicles, was a stretch from his usual parts and components. “I wanted to see these stations for myself,” said Axt, who doesn’t count himself among the tree-hugging ranks. With brother Jim Axt from Brookfield, Wis., he runs ElectrichargeMobility the distributor of Coulomb Technologies’ ChargePoint Stations in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

“Most people view this as a liberal issue, but being conservative, I also like to conserve on energy use,” said Axt, who has now installed the first electric vehicle charging station in Minnesota. He was sold on the station after visiting the Coulomb headquarters in Campbell, Calif. There, he had a chance to drive the CEO’s electric Mini Cooper. “It was amazing flying down the highway at 80 miles an hour. Without a gas engine, all you could hear was the sound of the road,” he said.

Almost two years ago, Axt began calling state and local government agencies, energy utilities, businesses and others about the emerging technology, one of a number of charging stations on the market. With partner Steve Weber, CEO of Weber Electric in Shoreview, he installed the very first electric vehicle charging station in the state Monday afternoon, Nov. 29, at the First National Bank Building in St. Paul. The station is one block off of the Central Corridor light rail line that will connect St. Paul and Minneapolis. “It feels good after working hard for a year and a half to break the ice,” said Axt. He has more contracts in the works. As electric cars become more prevalent, he said there would need to be more places to charge them. He estimates there are currently about 50 electric vehicles in Minnesota, converted by their owners from standard vehicles. Most of these vehicles are electric only, and have a limited reach of about 40 miles before requiring a recharge. CHARGING: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “It’s the chicken and the egg thing,” said Axt. “I’m not going to get an electric car if I don’t have a place to charge, and I’m not going to put in a charging station if there aren’t electric cars on the road.” There could be a few thousand electric cars by this time next year with the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt coming on the market in December, he said. The Leaf will also be 100 percent electric with a range of up to about 130 miles depending on driving conditions and habits. The Volt has an electric engine with small gas generator, giving it a range of about 40 miles on electricity only, and a few hundred miles using the gas generator. Coulomb has also been named one of two companies in a master contract with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency allowing members of the Minnesota Electric Vehicle Coalition to purchase charging stations using unified contracts, said Axt. The Coalition includes Minnesota state agencies, the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Hennepin and Ramsey counties, the Metropolitan Airports Commission, Xcel Energy, American Lung Association and other organizations. Axt said he expects to have a purchase order in place with the city of St. Paul by the

end of the month for up to 10 public stations installed in municipal parking ramps this winter, and another 10 stations installed on the street this spring. The other company in the state contract, Cleveland-based Eaton Corp., will supply private charging stations for the city’s own electric vehicle fleet, he said. Axt said the Coulomb stations are superior to others for their reporting capabilities and accountability. The ChargePoint Stations are networked wirelessly, allowing station owners to set rates, track energy use and emissions savings online. Drivers can also view their personal use at www.mychargepoint.net, and see in real time what stations are available. The company has close to 600 across the United States. The machines can be accessed with a prepaid charge pass card from Coulomb, contactless credit card or by phone payment. Coulomb works with local utility providers to allow the stations to be shut down in case of system overload. Drivers are alerted by text or e-mail messages when their car has finished charging or if power has been interrupted for any reason. Axt said the St. Paul stations would be powered by Xcel’s wind energy program. Coulomb will offer three levels of stations – a simple 120-volt plug, a dual station with 120- and 240-volt outlets, and a forth-

coming 480-volt station capable of charging a vehicle in less than 30 minutes. The station at First National is a dual station, and can accommodate two cars – a converted electric vehicle using the 120-volt outlet, and a new electric vehicle capable of charging at 240 volts. It takes about eight hours to fully charge on the 120-volt, and three to four hours on the 240-volt, Axt said. Axt said the station costs roughly $6,000. Station owners like Cushman & Wakefield, which manages and leases the First National Bank Building, set the pricing and time limits. A small portion of the cost goes back to Coulomb for network management, and the rest stays with the station owner to cover electricity costs and earn profit. “It’s not a losing proposition,” said Axt, who is in talks with area businesses and educational institutions interested in the technology. It wasn’t a difficult decision for the First National Bank Building. Tanya Hemphill, general manager at the property, said installation of the charging station is one of a number of green initiatives at the downtown St. Paul property. “Being the first parking facility in the Twin Cities to offer [electric vehicle] charging stations only serves to reinforce the First National Bank Building’s position as a leader in the marketplace,” she said.

Three Rivers Park District delivers fresh gift ideas When it comes to gift ideas, it’s hard to find the right fit for each friend and family member. You want to give something that’s unique, fits the recipient’s style and still fulfills a need, but doesn’t break the bank. While I can’t knit an iPad, a luggage set or a coffee machine, knitting can create those small, personal, meaningful gifts. They are not expensive or flashy and you can’t check your email on them, but they show dedication and an attention to detail. I try to brainstorm all sorts of clever gift ideas before we even reach December. There are only so many dishcloths a person wants to receive over the years, you know. So last summer, I made a matching set for a sister-inlaw’s Christmas gift: a fuzzy, black hat and a skinny, long, scarf in the same yarn. In early November, I knitted a few cranberry-red coffee cup sleeves – do they become sweaters if you add buttons? – for some of my coffee-addicted relatives. Inevitably, I hit a rut and run out of ideas. Maybe I should get a tie for Dad, but I probably shouldn’t knit one. And back to the ubiquitous dishcloth patterns I go. But Three Rivers Park District sent out an e-mail last week with a few nifty, nonknitted gift ideas: • Gift cards – OK, so maybe a gift card to a favorite restaurant or clothing store is not unique, but I’ve heard that more people are trying to give gifts of activities or experiences rather than gifts of possessions. With a gift card, people can buy rounds of golf or golf lessons, nature and recreation program registrations, and downhill ski or snowboard lift tickets and lessons. Gift cards are available at Park

Moms ROCK shares pajamas and children’s books Edina native speaks at Eden Prairie breakfast BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Mothers can do, explain and talk about a lot when they work together. Or when they just have breakfast together. After a morning meal at Pax Christi Church in Eden Prairie on Wednesday, Dec. 1, a room full of mothers in the group Moms ROCK (Raising Our Christian Kids) donated clothing for hospitalized children and learned how children’s book author Nancy Carlson has used her own parenting experiences to create some of her many books. Moms ROCK gathers twice a month, and anyone can attend a meeting (which includes a meal and usually a speaker) for $7. Getting hospitalized children new, comfortable pajamas to replace the hospital garments was part of the Dec. 1 meeting. Wendy Berezovsky initiated the nonprofit Sweet Dreams for Kids after her

daughter was diagnosed with cancer when she was just two months old. Now five-years-old, her daughter is healthy and cancer-free, but Berezovsky’s group continues taking clothing and donations to reach out to children in the hospital. “After many, many times in the hospital, I just figured I had to do something good,” Berezovsky said. She said hospital clothes can be a constant reminder that a child is sick, so regular, comfortable pajamas can be mentally and physically helpful for everyone involved. So, she began the program after she was asked to speak with hospital staff about the ordeal with her child. After that, she received her first donation of 35 pajama outfits and her idea grew from there. To date, Sweet Dreams for Kids has brought almost 2,000 pairs of new, donated clothes to hospitals. And, Berezovsky’s story was just the opening of the meeting. After her talk, writer and illustrator Carlson talked about how she became a children’s book author and how she used her experiences as a mother to craft her pages.

Carlson, an Edina native, attended The University of Minnesota Duluth for a year before attending and graduating from the Minneapolis College of Art with a fine arts degree. After spending a year traveling and working on art in Europe, she illustrated for metro-area magazines and publications, before finding a publisher to being her illustrating and then writing career. “I write about my life and about my children’s,” Carlson said. For instance, she went to her son Patrick’s school conference in fourth grade, and she thought it was going to be a good conference, Carlson said. Carlson said the first thing the teacher said to her was, “You’re son knows 101 ways to sit in a chair.” As she left the conference, the teacher said that would make a good idea for a book. And, it did. It became the book “Sit Still,” and Carlson even used the teacher’s line as the first sentence. “Patrick knows 101 ways to sit in a chair.” Other book inspirations also include her two other children, her distaste for fruitcake and an instance from her childhood, when she brought home a snake

from camp, which later escaped into the heating system of her family’s home. But, the books aren’t always based on her life. After talking with a Minneapolis school system kindergarten teacher and a principal in the late 1980s, she discovered they sometimes had 100 students come to the first day of school and they’re not registered and are unprepared, she said. They told her she should write a book about preparing for kindergarten. That book was “Look Out Kindergarten Here I Come,” which singer Dolly Parton used as part of her Imagination Library program. At the time, the program gave a book every month to every baby born in Tennessee until they were five years old, Carlson said. That program has been taken over by the United Way, and that agency has replicated the giveway in many states, Carlson said. That’s just one of the recognitions out of several awards and honors she’s received. Carlson has had more than 60 books published, talks in schools and at other events nationwide. school districts that we’ve been doing for years, and just reached a little bit further.” That meant finding a way to expand. RBCU has it’s branch on 77th Street in Richfield, and another office another at 4025 West Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. But a presence in the heart of Bloomington’s business district was a still a desire. “The low-hanging fruit was over here in Bloomington, because a lot of people in Bloomington didn’t know we existed,” Brekken said. “We didn’t have a real convenient location for them. We did a big market research study as far as where to put branches up, and 98th and Lyndale is still considered the downtown of Bloomington from a business perspective, and fortunately, that is basically where we ended up.” The 16,000 square foot location features two floors, with the main branch on the first floor, and a call center and some executive offices on the second – one of which is Brekken’s. The City of Bloomington originally green lighted a 40,000 square foot building, and Brekken said the current building could handle an 18,000-square foot expansion at some point.

Pat Brekken has himself a new office, with a fresh view of a community he has helped reinvigorate with its credit union needs. RBCU (Richfield Bloomington Credit Union) opened its new branch at 9550 Lyndale Avenue in Bloomington. It is the unofficial offspring of a 2005 decision to move away from servicing strictly Select Employee Groups (SEG) to anyone and everyone living, working, worshiping, volunteering or going to school in Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, Fort Snelling and the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport. And its one that officially signifies the commitment RBCU has made to the communities it serves. “We have a niche, and a focus on these communities,” said Brekken, RBCU’s president. “As the national economy is getting eaten up, people are really looking for local partners, and that is one of the things that we’ve talked about. We made the decision to really get involved in the local communities, and being community minded is paying a big dividends.” More so, RBCU’s decision to expand their abilities paid off equally. When it originally opened in 1957, their focus was teachers, meaning in order to be a member of the credit union, one had to be employed by the school district. Eventually, that expanded to all families with children in high school, but that still left a large gap in who could attain membership. “The students at the senior high schools were eligible, which then made their families eligible,” said Brekken. “But for the second grade families, there was no way for us to go catch them and bring them in as members, so in 2005, we basically parlayed our work with the

I remember working really hard to keep up with the speed of play,� said Whipple, who grew up in Edina and has been a referee for more than 25 years. Justin Johnson was on duty as an EMT with Blue Line Medical Services, Inc., which provides EMTs for sporting events. Minnesota Hockey, the statewide governing body for amateur and youth hockey, requires EMTs present at all tournaments. The Edina native and Minneapolis firefighter said when he saw Whipple collapse face-first on the ice, his training automatically kicked in. “I ran onto the ice and turned him over,� said Johnson. “It was obvious he was in cardiac arrest. There was no pulse.� He yelled for someone to call 911 and retrieve the rink’s AED. He was joined on the ice by Dr. Nick Schneeman, a physician at North Clinic in Robbinsdale, whose daughter plays for Highland Central. “He’s really lucky. He got immediate CPR and rapid defibrillation,� said

Schneeman, who began administering CPR. Meanwhile, Plymouth resident Mary Kay Hobday, a nurse of 20 years, went with husband Paul to get the AED from the front counter. Physical therapist Lisa Leininger of Plymouth, whose daughter is also on the Wayzata team, assisted setting up the AED as Schneeman and Johnson continued CPR. “If you know how to do it, you go do it,� said Hobday of the fast response. “And everyone should know how to use an AED. It’s so easy.� According to the American Heart Association, a person’s chance of surviving cardiac arrest is reduced 7 to 10 percent with every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation. CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival, but the shock from an AED is what restores heart rhythm. When an Edina Fire ambulance arrived four minutes after the 7:01 p.m. emergency call, Whipple was already speaking. “By the time our paramedics got there he was conscious, had some chest pain, but he was doing very, very well,� said Scheerer. Whipple was transported to Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. He was released Monday, Nov. 29. “I’m very impressed with the training people have received in how to respond to an event like this,� he said, thanking the first responders, arena and hospital staff. “They all knew exactly what needed to be done.� Scheerer said the incident demonstrates the importance of early CPR and defibrillation. He said nearly all city of Edina buildings, including Braemar Arena, are equipped with an AED. Most of have been donated to the city. “It’s very, very important to do early electricity combined with CPR, and this is a great example of how it’s all supposed to work,� said Scheerer. Q. What happens to the ashes after cremation? A. Your cremated remains (ashes) will be handled according to your written instructions. They may be picked up by your survivors, or will be delivered or mailed for a fee.

The cost of the basic cremation service which includes removal of the body from the place of death, cremation, filing of the necessary papers and cardboard container suitable for burial is presently $1395.00 for members. This is payable at the time services are rendered. The charge to non-members, whom we also service, is more.

At the time of death, our counselors are available to assist your survivors in arranging for memorial services, obtaining certified copies of the death certificate, cemetery services, grave makers and monuments, obituaries for the newspaper and paperwork for Social Security and Veterans’ benefits.

The makeovers showcase how two of a home’s key rooms can be updated not only to be fresher and more appealing but also to be easier to use. Most Boomers already have a few basic elements in their homes that can help the homes age gracefully with their occupants, the poll reports. Eight in ten Boomers and almost nine in ten Americans over 65 have homes with two of the key elements of comfortable living at any age or ability. Eighty-two percent have a full bath on the main level of their home and 81% have a bedroom or a room on the main floor that could become a bedroom if they were injured or wanted to downsize from multi-floor living. “Far too often a person has to break a leg or contract a serious illness to discover that the home they love could restrict their comfortable lifestyle,” said Elinor Ginzler, AARP Senior Vice President for Livable Communities. “A few tweaks to key rooms and entrances when boomers and empty nesters are already remodeling can make a standard home more user-friendly for anyone at any age or ability.” To prove that point, AARP launched its “Recession Remodel” room makeover contest last year intending to show that even in a recession, bathrooms and kitchens can be updated not only to be more attractive but also to make the home more comfortable and efficient now and in the future. The final makeovers of the winning rooms — a farm house kitchen outside Charlotte, North Carolina and a Snohomish, Washington bath – are being revealed today with before and after photos and videos at www.aarp.org/remodel. Both makeovers employed universal design, a design approach that assures a room or home is easily used by anyone of any age or ability.

The Makeovers Not too long ago, North Carolina winner Jamie Hammill’s mom Judy moved back to the family farmhouse in Richfield, NC about an hour outside of Charlotte. But the pleasant old-fashioned farmhouse kitchen was outdated and hard to use. AARP’s total makeover of the winner’s kitchen unveiled today expanded and brightened the room, added an open floor plan, extensive cabinet and counter space, multi-level work and eating space, and easy to reach appliances. Senior citizens and Baby Boomers love to be able to do something special for their children and grandchildren during the holidays. Nevertheless, in tough economic times, the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) advises that taking the time to map out your spending in November will help ease the strain of a holiday financial hangover in January. According to a survey by Consumer Reports, shoppers planned on spending about $699 over the holidays last year, but, in a follow-up survey, admitted to actually spending closer to an average of $811 – 16 percent more than planned. Whole Foods Market planning store at Centennial Lakes Plaza BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Whole Foods Market is planning a new grocery store in Edina’s Centennial Lakes Plaza shopping center. The proposed site plan and exterior design were presented at a neighborhood open house Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the Hughes Pavilion at Centennial Lakes Park. The project was slated to go before the Edina Planning Commission for final development plan review at its Wednesday, Dec. 1, meeting. The project will also need City Council approval. The roughly 32,000 square-foot new building is proposed for the southeast corner of France Avenue and Parklawn Avenue where Storables and Thomasville Furniture now cover about 35,000 square-feet. “We would expect construction to begin in March,” said Bruce Carlson, with project coordinator Mid-America Real Estate Group. Kathy Anderson, project architect with Architectural Consortium, said Whole Foods would extend about 40 feet into the shopping center parking lot

beyond the current Storables building. A loading dock and additional parking would cover most of the Thomasville Furniture footprint. She said the building façade incorporates brick and limestone elements featured in other Edina buildings. The design includes a patio seating area by France Avenue. Residents at the nearby Centennial Lakes Village Homes who attended the open house said they were excited about the proposal. Ann Lindsay and Carla Nelson said they now carpool to the Whole Foods near Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis. “To be able to walk is just amazing,” said Lindsay. “I think it will benefit the whole shopping area.” Whole Foods is the nation’s leading seller of organic produce, said Daniel Blackburn, store team leader at the Minneapolis location. The Austin, Tex.based company also has a store in St. Paul and recently announced plans for a Minnetonka location. Worldwide, there are nearly 300 stores with another 40some stores in development.

Curfew will be enforced during school break in Hennepin County BY MELANIE BOYUN • SUN INTERN Just because school will be in recess much of the latter half of December doesn’t mean students can run amok. Hennepin County has a curfew system set by age for all minors. On weeknights curfew is 9 p.m. for children younger than 12, 10 p.m. for ages 12 to 14, and 11p.m. for ages 15 to 17. On Fridays and Saturdays, curfew is one hour later for each age group. The county curfew regulations are followed and enforced by each city. A minor out past curfew without adult supervision is a violation the law, which requires them to be home by the time of curfew, not just on their way. The purpose of the curfew law is to encourage unsupervised minors to be home at a reasonable time to prevent trouble and forego opportunities for destructive or offensive behavior. General procedure for curfew viola-

tions is that the offenders are cited fined. The fines are $25 for a first offense, $50 for a second offense and $75 or two days of community service for a third. Problems with curfew violation vary between communities. The Edina Police Department issued 115 curfew citations in 2010 through the end of October; up from 88 in 2008 and 101 in 2009. In St. Louis Park there were only 8 citations in each 2009 and through October 2010, a decrease from 15 in 2008 and around 40 in 2007 according to annual reports. Girls skate into Tartan Richfield’s girls hockey team will be tested in and out of the Classic Suburban Conference in the coming week. The Spartans play conference opponent Tartan at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, on the road. Richfield, 0-5-1 overall, returns home to play Robbinsdale Cooper of the North Suburban Conference at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Richfield Ice Arena. Richfield will rely heavily on leadership from tri-captains Kalie Johnson, Alex Westman and Becca Hendrickson this season under the guidance of first-year head coach Jeff Caspar.

RHS boys are at home The high school boys hockey season is underway. Richfield will host Providence Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9. The Spartans head to St. Louis Park for a 7:30 p.m. game Saturday, Dec. 11. Two Richfield players to watch are senior defenseman P.J. Peterson and junior center Mick Dhein. They are co-captains.

Richfield’s Olson praises new Gophers coach Former Spartan has been three-year starting tackle for Kill at Northern Illinois BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield High School graduate Trevor Olson got to know the University of Minnesota’s new head football coach very well over the last three years. Olson has been a starting offensive tackle for Northern Illinois University team during those three seasons. That team had been coached by Jerry Kill until this week, when he was named the Gophers’ new head coach. Olson, a 6-foot-6, 306pound junior, has been one of the players responsible for Kill’s 2316 record at NIU. Olson competed in Kill’s final game as the Huskies’ head coach Dec. 10 at Ford Field in Detroit. Northern Illinois Trevor Olson lost 26-21 to Miami (Ohio) in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship game. Olson and his teammates will play under an interim coach in the Humanitarian Bowl against Fresno State Dec. 18 in Boise, Idaho. Northern Illinois has a 10-3 record entering that bowl game. “Jerry is a great guy and really takes cares of his players,” said Olson. “He is a believer in playing consistent football and developing a balanced attack.” Olson has developed into one of the best blockers in the MAC. He was redshirted as a freshman before starting all 13 games the following season. As a sophomore, Olson was a thirdteam all-conference selection. This season, Olson earned first-team all-conference honors. Olson was disappointed that the Huskies lost in the conference title game. But he said he is glad to be attending NIU and playing on a team that is ranked 25th in the country. “It has been a blast playing at Northern Illinois,” said Olson. “I have

He also kicked for the Spartans. He also lettered three seasons in golf and two seasons in hockey. Athletic talent runs in the Olson family. Trevor is the oldest of three sons raised by Lisa and Todd Olson. Todd Olson, Richfield athletic director and football coach, is proud of his sons – Trevor, Dylan and Nick. Dylan is a junior at Hamline University and was a baseball pitcher during his prep career at Richfield. Nick Olson recently earned AllClassic Suburban Conference, All-Metro

and All-State honors as a 6-4, 255-pound senior left tackle and defensive end at Richfield High. “I’m surprised and happy for what my sons have accomplished,” said Todd Olson. “Trevor is a driven and passionate athlete. “He has God-given athletic talents and it is good to see him rewarded for his hard work.” There might be a pro career ahead for Trevor Olson. NFL scouts are closely monitoring his progress. “It has always been a dream to get a chance to play at the professional level,” said Olson. “We’ll have to see how things work out.” Olson’s immediate focus is to help Northern Illinois conclude its 2010 season with a win in the Humanitarian Bowl.

Richfield, Edina form wrestling co-op squad Rampage finishes fifth in Fridley tournament BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS A new chapter of the Richfield/Edina wrestling program is underway. Richfield and Edina high schools have formed a wrestling co-op program to provide more student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in one of the oldest sports in history. “We are excited to welcome back a solid core of individual wrestlers and look forward to building a competitive team,” said Richfield/Edina co-head coach Eric Herrmann. Herrmann will share coaching duties with Josh Burhans. “We are excited to reconnect the two programs from Richfield and Edina,” said Herrmann. “We want to develop our wrestlers’ athletic skills, academics and citizenship.” Richfield/Edina competed at the Fridley Invitational Dec. 4. The team, nicknamed the Rampage, finished fifth out of 12 squads with 129 points. Eleven athletes competed on the Rampage varsity team, including ninthgrader Justin Swetala (103 pounds), ninth-grader Hayden Moses (112), junior Tyler Brinker (125), sophomore Darryl Pika (130) and junior James Lettow (135). Other Rampage competitors were junior Dennis Chavarria (152), senior Mitch Wojcik (160), sophomore Shane Wolfoort (171), sophomore Chandler Arredondo (189), senior Quinn Deeds (215) and junior Mike Dyer (285). Brinker and Lettow finished second in their weight classes. Arredondo and Dyer placed third. Chavarria and Wojcik had fourthplace finishes. Wolfoort was fifth and Moses finished sixth. The Richfield/Edina team will meet Simley and North St. Paul in a Classic Suburban Conference triangular meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9. The Rampage will wrestle at Minneapolis Southwest Friday, Dec. 10.

SHORTS Holiday hoops tourney The Richfield Rotary and Optimist clubs are sponsoring the Holiday Classic Girls Basketball Tournament Monday, Dec. 27, and Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Richfield High School main gym. This tournament will feature varsity and junior varsity girls basketball teams from Richfield, Burnsville, Apple Valley and Bloomington Jefferson. JV games start at 2 and 4:30 p.m. each day. Varsity games start at 6 and 8 p.m. There will be halftime shooting contests for fans with a chance to win prizes. Proceeds from this event will be used by the Richfield Rotary and Optimist clubs to support student athletic activities and other projects in Richfield Public Schools.
