Rotary Club mentors Richfield High School students to help meet educational, life goals BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS In high school today, there are over achievers and underachievers, but what about the kids that that sometimes get lost in between? For the last 12 years, the Richfield Rotary Club has been implementing the STRIVE program, which offers mentoring at the Richfield High School for juniors and seniors that need that little boost to help kick start their educational goals. The STRIVE program’s motto is to maximize potential and to celebrate the students successes in school. “Our major accomplishment is to make sure we do our very best, that we can as mentors, have the kids come up a grade level and to have built relationships with the kids to let them know that they do have someone there that can help them, not just in school but in the community also,” Richfield Rotary STRIVE Chairman Mike Andrews said. During the students’ junior year, the mentoring program helps them develop goals from improving their grade point average to making the decision to pursue

Two is better than one. At the Richfield Public Schools a second winner of the FOX 9 Top Teacher Award was surprised on May 9. Ian Leonard, chief meteorologist at FOX 9, raided Richfield High School to honor Eric Herrmann. “I am incredibly honored.” Herrmann said. Herrmann is a math teacher, wrestling and football coach and a teacher in the AVID program. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program designed to assist students in the middle of the academic spectrum in attaining the dream of college. It was in Herrmann’s AVID class sophomore Eleni Menter felt his influence was worthy of recognition. “He is a really good teacher. He makes sure that everyone knows what they are doing and he wants

vided in a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court: Jessica Belcher, 28, worked as a bookkeeper for Skyview Dairy beginning in 2008. The business owner, an Eden Prairie resident, noticed that between Jan. 1, 2010, and March 14 of this year, Belcher had written five checks to herself from the company. The total amount was nearly $5,000. Belcher had written the checks to herself and made it look like they had been written to other groups. Eden Prairie Police Department Det. Andrew Rohde interviewed Belcher, and after reading her rights, she admitted to depositing five work checks into her account without permission. She said she had intended to repay the company, but never did. Belcher has been charged with theft by swindle and if convicted could face up to five years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.

Celiac Center offers support, education BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS When people learn that they or their children have celiac disease, it can be a confusing and stressful experience. “It’s almost like a nightmare when you’re first diagnosed,” according to Julie Salato. Salato knows of the nightmare. She was diagnosed with celiac disease twoand-a-half years ago, following the diagnosis of her daughter. Celiac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease. When celiac sufferers eat foods containing gluten, an immune reaction causes damage to the small intestine and prevents nutrients from being properly absorbed. Gluten is the common name for proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and related grains, Salato explained. Being on a gluten-free diet means eliminating a variety of breads and related products, such as pizza crust, Salato said. But many other products, such as soy sauce, barbecue sauce, beer, candy bars and even licorice are typically off limits, sometimes because gluten is used as a thickening agent in the production of the

For those who are diagnosed with celiac disease, learning how to adapt to a gluten-free diet can be a challenge. To help those adjusting to a gluten-free diet, Salato founded Celiac Center of Minnesota. Using space donated by St. Stephen Lutheran Church of Bloomington, Celiac Center will offer support, education and resources for those seeking a gluten-free lifestyle. “We wanted to provide that ongoing, consistent presence,” she said. A 30-minute orientation will be held each Monday at 6 p.m., and periodic class-

es will examine topics associated with a gluten-free diet. The Gluten Detectives program will provide a monthly class for children learning to adapt to a gluten-free diet. A gluten-free day camp is also planned during three days in late July. As part of Celiac Center’s grand opening, a gluten-free cook out is planned next week. A gluten-free diet not only poses a challenge during the summer barbecue season because of the gluten found in most hamburger and hot dog buns, but cross contamination from the grate of a barbecue grill is enough to affect a celiac sufferer, according to Salato. The May 16 barbecue will feature buns from Udi’s Gluten Free Foods, a Denverbased company that bakes gluten-free buns, buns that are unavailable in the Twin Cities market, Salato said. Celiac disease is estimated to affect 1 out of 133 people, and up to 40 percent of the population may be gluten intolerant, according to Salato. Diagnosis of celiac disease can be challenging, however, and most people with celiac disease do not know they have it, she said. For the few children diagnosed with

celiac disease, the inability to eat a typical meal can be isolating. “Food is part of our culture,” Salato said. Children on a gluten-free diet have to forego cupcakes or other baked treats that are part of a typical in-class celebration, she noted. For Salato it is frustrating not being able to drink a beer during a summer barbecue, but for children such as her daughter, the constant reminders of her diet restriction can be far more challenging. “It can be a very isolating diet,” she said. Avoiding gluten is challenging as there are limited products available to replace the hamburger buns and beer that contain gluten. It also presents a financial burden because gluten-free products are a niche market and “are so ridiculously expensive,” she said. Identifying grocery stores that carry gluten-free products and restaurants that offer gluten-free alternatives are among the services Celiac Center will provide. Salato plans to organize social outings at restaurants that provide gluten-free alternatives as a show of support for the business and a chance for celiac disease sufferers to socialize.

rooms and a backyard to play in. “It’s been a wonderful little place for us,” said Angie Trailer. “And especially with our two kids, getting into the Edina School District was just a dream for us.” The nonprofit organization has helped close to 90 families like the Trailers purchase houses in west Hennepin County over the last 10 years. Homes Within Reach Executive Director Janet Lindbo said the program, also known as the West Hennepin Affordable Housing Land Trust, has qualified buyers purchase the house structure, and lease the land underneath it for a nominal fee. By removing the cost of land from the equation, mortgage payments, property taxes and closing costs are significantly reduced, making homeownership possible for working households, she said. The Minnetonka-based organization began in 2001 when community leaders in that city saw a need for permanent affordable homeownership for teachers, retail and customer service workers, food custodians, municipal employees and other laborers. “We want to meet the needs of those

BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS For many working families, purchasing a home in one of west Hennepin County’s suburban climes is out of reach. When a job brought Chris and Angie Trailer to the Twin Cities from Iowa last year, they were disappointed to find even several years of savings wouldn’t take them very far. “We had a sizeable down payment,” said Angie. “The problem we kept running into was my husband works in human services and that’s not a big money maker.” Angie, who stays home with kids Kailey, 4, and 2-year-old Ethan, said they couldn’t find a decent house in the area with affordable monthly mortgage payments. Then the property manager at their rental in Bloomington told them about Homes Within Reach. For the last six months they’ve owned a modest rambler in Edina. She said her children love having their own

“Everything was new in my home except for the washer and dryer,” she said, taking away the risk for immediate costly repairs that could break the bank. “They make sure that you will be able to succeed in home ownership.” Johnson, who works as certified peer counselor for Ramsey County Adult Mental Health, is a foster parent and single mom to an adopted 4-year-old boy. She said she had never entertained the possibility of owning a home until she saw a Homes Within Reach flier in a coffee shop. To qualify, buyers must earn less than 80 percent of the area median income. Most clients make closer to 58 percent, said Lindbo. The average household income is $40,868. Buyers must be able to get a mortgage. The average monthly mortgage payment is $907, often equal to or less than the cost many were paying to rent. Lindbo said while home prices have dropped in some areas over the past few years, the cost of the land has not decreased in the suburbs. Homes Within Reach has found available prop-

essential workers in our communities,” which have since grown to also include Brooklyn Park, Deephaven, Edina, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, Maple Grove, New Hope, Richfield, St. Louis Park and Wayzata, said Lindbo. With a decade of service behind it, Board President Robert Hamilton said Homes Within Reach has a solid foundation to continue growing. The first-ever fundraiser and benefit for the nonprofit is Monday evening, May 23, at Centennial Lakes Park in Edina. “We really think the mission is great for our communities,” said Hamilton, an Edina resident and co-chair of the event. Homes Within Reach purchases typically foreclosed and abandoned properties with funding from local, state and federal programs, and private donors. The properties are then refurbished to safety, health and efficiency guidelines before they are sold to the new owners. Fixes can include new electrical wiring, windows, roofs and appliances. Owner Christine Johnson, who’s been in her St. Louis Park house for a year and a half, said she was blown away by its condition.

An open letter to the citizens of Richfield BY BARRY PRITZ GUEST COLUMNIST As the weather warms, excitement builds as spring turns to summer. For many families and kids, this is the season for parties and festivities with prom, graduation, end of school year celebrations and summer gatherings, but I want to share a special concern with you. This time of year also brings a risk of underage drinking. It is up to all of us to stand together and prevent underage drinking. Car crashes, unplanned pregnancies, rapes, violence, alcohol abuse and other serious health issues are all con-

sequences of underage drinking. It is essential that parents, schools, businesses, law enforcement, media, community organizations and the community at large work to send a united message that we take the issue of underage drinking seriously. Please join us in this year’s Together We Stand Campaign, designed to reduce the access and availability of alcohol to minors. Research shows that youth are receptive to clear, consistent no-use messages from the people and organizations that touch their lives. Alcohol use by minors is not a rite of passage and something “everyone does.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR First in, last out is bad policy To the editor: In the Sun-Current on April 14, 2011, article “School District cuts teachers”, Richfield Public Schools Supt. Robert Slotterback was quoted as saying, “This is terrible; it’s awful. These are good people, these are hardworking, dedicated employees”. The really sad thing is that the reason these people will be let go has absolutely nothing to do with their job performance or teaching ability. They are caught up in the “Last in, first out” policy. In another case, Wisconsin’s “First Year Teacher of the Year” was laid off for the same reason. How can we expect that our students are being taught by the best teachers if we still utilize the archaic “Last in, first out” policy? It needs to go. Mike McLean Richfield

It is a serious health problem. If you are a parent, talk to your children, let them know what you expect, set limits and monitor their activities. Teens continually report that adults are their primary source of alcohol at home, in bars and restaurants, and outdoor parties. Servicing alcohol to minors is illegal. Adults providing alcohol to teens can be ordered to serve a jail or prison sentence, pay fines and substantial monetary civil damages. Make your home a safe place where young people can neither bring in nor obtain alcohol. Through standing together

we really can make a difference for young people. For more information about the Together We Stand Campaign or about the TriCity Partners Coalition for Healthy Youth and Communities, you can go to www.tricitypartners.org. The Tri City Partners Coalition works in the cities of Bloomington, Edina and Richfield to reduce youth substance use and is sponsored by Bloomington Public Health and Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAHMSA.) Barry Frtiz is the public safety director for the city of Richfield.

Homes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE al Catholic school system, eventually becoming a vice principal. She was later transferred to Chicago. After going through a divorce, she came home to Minnesota, however, her teaching license didn’t transfer. She heard about Homes Within Reach while working part-time at an after-school program She said having a permanent home near family was important for her and son Lalo, 12, after moving so many times in recent years. “Our house is in a very nice neighborhood,” said Edmondson, who is nearing completion of a master’s degree in curriculum development. “There are a lot of kids my son’s age here. His new best friend lives next door. He can walk to his school bus and feel safe.” Once owners purchase their home,

they can stay there even if their income increases beyond 80 percent of the area median. If they decide to sell their home during the course of their 99-year land lease, it must be sold to a qualifying buyer. Often, owners will work with Homes Within Reach to complete the transaction. Hamilton said each investment over time has the potential to serve a large number of people. “The average person stays in one of our homes for about nine years,” said Hamilton. “Because we can put this land in our trust for a century, our 90 homes will serve 900 families.” Lindbo said the communities where the homes are located also benefit from the new dedicated homeowners and community members. The Trailers said they enjoy owning a home and doing all of the work that comes with it. They are already planning some upgrades in their kitchen. “We have all these dreams for the house,” said Angie. “It as completely move-in ready and now we can totally dream whatever we want to.”

Minnesota Supreme Court takes center stage in Eden Prairie BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS They may have been on stage but they were far from acting. The robes, arguments and case were the real thing. Around 700 Eden Prairie High School students heard actual oral arguments in a Minnesota Supreme Court case Thursday, May 5, in the school’s performing arts center. The case was the State of

Minnesota v. Melissa Jean Crawley that originated in Winona County. The central question in the case: Does a state law that criminalizes making a false statement about police misconduct a violation of the First Amendment? In general, Crawley’s attorney argued the state law, Minn. Stat. 609.505, subdivision 2, is not constitutional since it makes it illegal to make a false statement that is harmful to a

government official, but it does not criminalize false statements supportive of a government official. The Supreme Court only heard the oral arguments, and a ruling was not made. Taking four to six months to rule on a case is not abnormal, according to Lissa Finne with the court office. The court usually spends the first two weeks of a month hearing oral arguments and ruling on cases. The

second two weeks they read the cases for the next month and write the opinions for the decisions they just decided. That’s how Justice Helen Meyer described the justices’ typical day during the question and answer session after the oral arguments were heard on Thursday. Also during those first two weeks, COURT: TO NEXT PAGE

Court FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the court decides which cases they will take. They consider around 750800 cases every year, Meyer said, and they vote on which of those is important enough for them to take. The court usually accepts one in eight cases presented to them, according to a statement from the court. “We have a very routine work life. I can tell you a year from now what I’m going to be doing. … We spend a lot of time reading and writing, and that’s the bottom line,” Meyer said. When asked what the two biggest issues that come before the Supreme Court, Meyer said cases regarding the government’s right to search for evidence and the right of government to question someone without the presence of a lawyer. Justices also explained that the Minnesota Supreme Court is the highest court in the state, they have the final say on cases and interpretation of state law. So, they don’t see the parties in the cases, the defendants or appellants as the typical trial court

Attorney David Flaherty gives his argument during a Minnesota Supreme Court case at the Eden Prairie High School Performing Arts Center Thursday, May 5. The case was the State of Minnesota v. Melissa Jean Crawley that originated in Winona County. It was the 33rd time the court has made oral arguments accessible to high school students, in an effort to show just how the system works. (Photos by Paul Groessel • Sun Newspapers) would. That court is expected to be impartial and rule on the merits of a law. The justices discussed that ideal, and one student asked a follow up question: What happens when a justice’s personal bias is too strong for one

case? Justice Paul Anderson said all the justices come from a variety of backgrounds, which is a good thing. “You want seven of us, because the seven of us have those different backgrounds and experiences,” he said. “I

actually found it – I was politically active before I came on the court, but I found it quite easy to set that aside.” But, there are times when a justice is privy to information that could affect the outcome of a ruling, he said, but those are rare. “There have been occasions where I’ve recused [myself],” he said. Anderson is an Eden Prairie native with some extensive roots. Anderson Lakes is named after his family, he said. He’s also an Eden Prairie graduate, class of 1961, so he’ll soon be celebrating his 50th anniversary (but, not until June 2, he quipped). And, the previous night, he received the Alumni of the Year award from the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools. Principal Conn McCartan also credited him with bringing the Supreme Court to Eden Prairie High School to give the students a glimpse of the court’s operations. Providing a better understanding of how the court operates was the goal of having it at the high school for the day, and it was the 33rd time the court has made oral arguments accessible to students across the state, according Finne. At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99.

Present this coupon after estimate

Ed Crandall and Dennis Imbody 612-607-0057 www.PROTECTPAINTERS.com

2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your

‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, guaranteed to help save up to 40 percent in home energy costs.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 6 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their

success is having the highest quality installation, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction,

enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean. Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Explore energy-efficient window coverings The ultimate goal of homeowners may be to install new energyefficient windows on their homes. However, the reality is that new windows can be a costly endeavor, one that's not necessarily for affordable for homeowners who continue to tighten their purse strings in a struggling economy. There are alternatives to installing new windows, including exploring options in energy-saving window coverings and draperies that can help prevent the exchange of air from inside and outside the home. Because they can be considerably less expensive than replacement windows, energy-saving window coverings are a viable option for those looking to eliminate drafts or preventing summer's heat from entering the home via windows that aren't up to snuff. There are several different styles from which to choose that make good alternatives for homeowners. Homeowners can convert traditional drapes into energy-saving options by making them fit more snugly. By securing the sides and the bottoms of the drapery to the walls with double-sided tape or Velcro, the curtains will contain the air that flows from the drafty window. Options also abound for homeowners who prefer blinds or drapes that are energy-efficient. Honeycomb blinds are the new alternative to mini blinds or verticals. They are made from accordion pleated fabric that forms a honeycomb pattern when the blinds are lowered. The double-layer blinds insulate the windows and can prevent heat

or cool air loss. Some accordion blinds are even rated for their efficiency. Black-out drapes can do more than darken a room for those who want to sleep longer in the morning. These drapes can keep hot sunlight out during the summer months, which can lead to a cooler home and less money spent on air conditioning. The same drapes can block drafts in cooler months because of the thickness of this type of curtain. Individuals who live in warm climates should select drapes and blinds that are light in color so they will reflect the sunlight and prevent rooms from overheating. Awnings or shrubbery placed by westand south-facing windows can help block even the harshest of the sun's rays. There are also energy-saving window films that can be applied to insulate windows and/or reflect sunlight. An added barrier between the glass of the window and the interior of the home may be all that's needed to make temperatures more comfortable. Until drafty windows can be replaced, homeowners can rely on energy-saving window coverings to help alleviate drafts or loss of cool air inside of the home. Different types of blinds and drapes can be used to provide insulation on drafty windows and prevent energy loss.

Consider concrete walls to replace wood Building the envelope of a house with concrete instead of wood is in high demand in the 21st century. Concrete is now a premium choice for delivering energy efficiency -- and as a replacement for wood framing, concrete walls reduce the need for trees and represent a big step in responsible building. Indeed, the latest technology in this field is able to deliver important energy savings -- as well as significant environmental and human health benefits. The award-winning wall system, by industry leader, Nudura, builds with pre-assembled forms, each one stacked, reinforced, and then filled with concrete. Once locked together (like Lego), the system creates a solid, monolithic concrete wall. Energy savings are recorded up to 70 percent. Drafts are eliminated. Wood-rot, mould, and the related toxicity are eliminated. The concrete building envelope is recorded to be up to three times more sound resistant, four times more fire resistant, and nine times stronger. More information on this building system is available online at www.nudura.com.

Concrete is an increasingly popular choice as a replacement for wood construction.

we get out of high school. One of my biggest goals, I set this year, is to decide whether I go to college or not,” Richfield High School junior Khalil Dykes said. As seniors, students are given resources to be more informed about their options at a traditional four-year college, trade school or community col-

lege. “We take the students on a tour of Normandale Community College to let the kids see what college experience is like and what it has to offer them,” Andrews said. There are other mentoring benefits to the program as well. Each month the group meets to discuss a wide spectrum of pro-

fessional skills and knowledge presented by the Richfield Rotarians. On Tuesday, May 3, professional public speaker and member of Richfield Rotary Jean Fox hosted an interactive group discussion with students about how communication can make or break success and highlighting body language as the first

thing a person will notice. “People believe what they see before what they hear,” Fox said to the students about effective communication. To become a member of STRIVE, a student must get a recommendation for a teacher. According to Richfield High STRIVE: TO PAGE 28

Barry Anderson gave some sage advice when an audience member asked how students could prepare to become a Supreme Court justice. He said not to set that as a lifetime career goal, because so many different things can happen throughout a career or lifetime. That would just be a setup for disappointment. So, his advice to prepare for a possible becoming a judge would be the advice he’d give to anyone, regarding any career. “Find work that you love, do well at it and to be an active, responsible citizen [then] let the chips fall where they may,” he said.

Andy Petersen The Richfield sophomore pitcher threw a no-hitter and struck out seven as the Spartans defeated North St. Paul 3-0 in Classic Suburban Conference baseball action May 5. Petersen allowed only one ball hit to the outfield.

Spartan coach juggles lineup for triangular meet BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield head boys track coach Dean Breuer juggled his lineup for a Classic Suburban Conference triangular May 3 at North St. Paul. “We gave a few key participants much-needed rest and others missed the meet because of illness,” said Breuer. “This provided many opportunities for up-and-coming athletes to fight for varsity spots as the season heads toward conference and section championship meets. We got a better idea where our strength and depth areas are.” North St. Paul won the team title with 86 points. Mahtomedi placed second (55) and Richfield was third (35). Richfield’s Collin Randolph had a first-place time of 2 minutes, 4.6 seconds in the 800-meter run. Jordan Sefon took first in the long jump at 20 feet, 10 1/2 inches. He was third in the triple jump (39-6 1/2). Sefon added a second-place time of 11.1 in the 100. Richfield’s 4x800 relay team of Alex Brault, Cal Bergen, Max Hamilton and Jon Libra had a second-place time of 9:21.5. Obsa Ali was second in the 1,600 (4:45.9). Gideon Ochako placed second in the 400 (55.3). Zak Beaudet finished second in the 800 (2:04.8). Nelson Soto cleared 10-0 in the pole vault for second place. Jose Romero placed third in the 200 (23.6). Moses Mugwanja finished third in the long jump (18-9 1/4). “Randolph and Beaudet continue as a strong tandem in the 800,” said Breuer. “Soto had his highest finish of the season in the pole vault. Sefon was strong again in the 100 and long jump.” Richfield was scheduled to compete in the section True Team meet May 10 at Apple Valley.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to correct thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited to 15 people. It will be held on Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 PM at the Hampton Inn, 4201 American Blvd W in Bloomington. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!
