The Twin Cities Show Chorus is a chapter in the Canadian-American Region Six and is affiliated with the global singing organization known as Sweet Adelines International. The group features women from the ages of 18 to 80 among its more than 65 members. Traveling from as far as Wisconsin and as close as Richfield, Edina and Bloomington, the Twin Cities Show Chorus rehearses every Tuesday night from 7-10 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Peace in Richfield or the Calvary Lutheran Church in Edina. Celebrating 35 years together, the group is led by Master Director Judy Olson. “We have been lucky to have an artistic director that can really dance,” member and Lead Section Coordinator Wendy Hamilton said. Olson is an accomplished choreographer and a member of the Sweet Adelines International Music Faculty. Traveling frequently, Olson coaches choruses and quartets in staging, choreography and performance techniques. The Twin Cities Show Chorus is not just a

After many drafts, Wellington Management is “getting closer” to making the right fit for the city of Richfield at the property on 66th Street and Lyndale Avenue, said Mayor Debbie Goettel. Beginning in the spring of 2010 Wellington Management begun to pursue the purchase of the old Kmart building and property near the intersection. Since then, in March 2011, a purchase agreement was signed and an anticipated closing date is tentatively set for August, according to Wellington Management President Stephen Wellington Jr. From the beginning,

Making the right choices The American Heart Association was proud to announce that Glenn Copeland was one of five Lifestyle Change Award semifinalists honored at the 2011 Twin Cities Heart Walk on June 4 at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Lifestyle Change Award recognizes individuals who are embracing the mission to better their cardiovascular health by making significant positive health and lifestyle changes over the past year. Copeland was nominated by his wife after he made significant lifestyle changes following a heart attack. Copeland quit smoking and makes an effort to go to the gym no less than three times a week. “I’m breathing better and able to play softball once a week and not be dying after I run the bases,” Copeland said.

Cole M. Gunner has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The cadets, prior to entering their freshman year, must successfully complete the six-week, two-phased orientation program. The training prepares men and women to meet the rigorous mental and physical challenges experienced by new cadets. The first phase involves orientation and training in the fundamentals of being a cadet.

Cadet trainees are prepared to adjust from civilian to military life and disciplines, and learn proper wear of the uniform, saluting policies and procedures, drill and ceremony, marching, and living quarters standards. During phase two, cadets train outdoors living in tents while learning to function in field conditions. Cadets apply and practice teamwork, cohesion and learn to deal with physically and mentally demanding situations. They complete the obstacle, confidence, assault and leadership reaction courses, and participate in a rescue mission termed Operation Warrior. Gunner is the son of Melody and David Gunner of Richfield.

Sheridan House provides community-focused option for senior living BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s a home for five people over 60 years old who don’t want to live alone and are provided with 24-hour supervision and personal care. However, the Sheridan House is far more than that. “The sense of feeling like a community is important to healthy aging,” said Sally Kundert, owner and operator of Sheridan House. For 15 years, Kundert, has taken 30 residents into her home and cared for them with the assistance of only one other certified Personal Care Attendant Sheila Atkinson. Due to the certification requirements, Sheridan can only house five residents at any given time. Before Sheridan House, Kundert was

a case manager certified in social work. After funding ran out in a project she was working on, Kundert saw a need for group living for seniors and made it reality. On Valentine’s Day in 1996, Kundert opened the licensed adult foster care facility called Sheridan House. The seven-bedroom home with two full bathrooms, a sitting room, dining room, complete kitchen, spacious television room, shaded deck and fully landscaped yard focuses on residential care including medication distribution, personal hygiene and healthy dining. With all of its amenities, Sheridan House is 100 percent aimed at socialization. “We concentrate on having fun,” Kundert said. “When I was working for a corporation and I had an idea it would

Letters to the editor: We really do love them The primary reason I and my coworkers write personal columns (they’re not editorials) for this page is to encourage readers to respond. It’s not easy. It seems no matter how outlandish we get, the feedback is minimal. Sometimes the responses we do get are bizarre. Generally the reactions fall into two categories. The first is totally disheartening. You research and write your guts out about a topic of interest and receive an email that says “in paragraph six you used ‘upon’ instead of ‘on.’ Is English your native language? Who proofreads this rag?” Yikes. No mention of what the writer might have thought about the topic. Just kvetching. Riding high in April, shot down in May. That’s life, I supposed. The second most common response tends to take the “who cares about your opinion” approach. Mind you, these writers never bother to tell us their

opinion, they simply want us to know that we are not entitled to ours. For instance, a column I wrote recently about the bane of fireworks drew a one-sentence response from an individual who accused me of advocating a “nanny state.” That’s a term used to try to put writers who believe sometimes people need to be told what to do in their place. The place is usually under the jackboot of the person using the term. Actually, my plea to ban fireworks had nothing to do with the nanny state. You see, idiots who abuse fireworks cause buildings to burn down. Each time one catches fire, my tax dol-

lars or yours (depending on where you live) are expended to pay salaries for firefighters. Taxpayer-funded police and fire departments both got involved in Fargo over the July 4 holiday when a man was struck and killed by a mortar-style firework. So my column was more of a plea to eliminate one more thing taxpayers have to support with their hard-earned dollars. Quite different from the idea of a nanny state. Heck, it’s almost libertarian. What is it that stops you from expressing your viewpoint on this page? We do everything possible to make it simple for readers to write letters to the editor. We’ve tossed most of the rules out the window to allow more exchanges of opinions. We are thankful to the letterwriters who do participate, but many of them fall into the “endless political campaigning” category. Frankly, those letters leave me personally wanting to retch.

Which proves that there is no litmus test per se for letters to the editor. I’ll swallow hard and place them on a page, no matter the topic. We do ask that you write within the bounds of good taste and keep your thoughts short and succinct. Those of us who write these columns try to keep it short and sweet because we know readers have busy lives and don’t want to spend half a day reading an opinion column. You can use the electronic form for letters found on our website or you can simply email your letter. Written and typed submissions are also welcome, although both require they be keyed into our system, which can delay publication. We will continue to try to strike a nerve with our columns and hopefully one day you’ll read something that convinces you to either agree or disagree strongly enough to write in. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ordinance coslty, unfeasible To the editor: I am writing to comment on the (Richfield) City Council’s waste container storage ordinance. They say it may inconvenience residents, which it definitely will, but they don’t appear to have addresses two very important issues — feasibility and cost. Logistically, there is absolutely no place in my backyard that a fence or an enclosure could be built to hide my garbage cans with out taking up valuable snow space and marring the openness of my backyard. The only thing I can think of would be to pound boards out from the side of my garage to hide them totally from

view. Obviously this would detract from my property and decrease my property value. My garbage cans are in good shape and lined up neatly on the side of my garage. They cannot be seen at all from one direction and with our privacy fence they are seen only from a glimpse on the other side. I have never had any litter fall out of them and they are just fine the way they are. More importantly in these depressed economic times I cannot afford to spend money I need for food, bills, gas and other expenses on a non-essential enclosure for my garbage cans. I would have to go in debt and charge the expense and I am sure that I am not alone in this. I can’t believe the city council will pass a new ordinance like

Thanks to Richfield Public Works To the editor: On these hot summer days, it is hard to remember winter, but last winter on one of the coldest days, my pipes froze. Members of the Richfield Public Works promptly came to my house to help me with this problem. They were diligent and creative. Even though they were not able to resolve the problem, they gave me some suggestions.

What are you doing to MY state park? Editor’s note: I’m not going to deal with the nitty-gritty of the state shutdown. Mostly, because politics are a tricky animal, and I won’t pretend I have any sort of solution for the current predicament. There are other related issues, however, that really get my goat and need addressing. I’m bummed about the Minnesota state shutdown. Mostly bummed because it means my favorite summer activity — heading to William O’Brien State Park in Marine-on-St. Croix, Minn. — isn’t possible at the moment. But I’m particularly upset because I had a sneaking suspicion the shutdown and subsequent closure of the parks would leave a gaping hole wherein low-life vandals could step in and harm something important to me as a nature enthusiast and Minnesotan. In case you didn’t hear, numerous media outlets are reporting extensive vandalism at Afton State Park, damage to Department of Natural Resources facilities in Grand Marais and other issues at parks across the state. Absolutely senseless and pointless acts that served only to ruin a shared natural resource. I love state parks. I feel at home in them so it’s tough to avoid the “get-off-my-lawnyou-kids” impulse here.

Setting aside, for a moment, the fact that as a state resource, the parks are funded at last partially through tax dollars making it silly for Hoodlum A to destroy public property that Hoodlum A (assuming he pays taxes) would have to help fund to repair, the main issue to me is the idea that the minute someone isn’t watching it’s somehow permissible to forget all societal mores and act like yahoos. Public property, be it a state park or an interstate highway, exists as a service we provide ourselves. We, the taxpayers, fund these public facilities with the common goal of all being able to access the outdoors or drive across the country. We, the taxpayers, are responsible for responsible use of such facilities. It’s a sad day when the minute our collective backs (in the form of park personnel) are turned some people feel the need or desire to rampage through our mutual property.

Uniform drive helps outfit scout for camp BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kris Hinderscheid of Hastings is the treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 534. Her family goes through a lot of uniforms. She and her husband have four sons who have all been involved in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts. The boys outgrow uniforms quickly. Kris’s husband also volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster and must wear a uniform. When Kris’s oldest son, 13-year-old Kalvin, was nominated by his scoutmaster to attend the exclusive, week-long Grey Wolf Leadership Camp in Wisconsin this

year, he needed to be outfitted with a full uniform first. “We wanted to make sure he had everything he needed,” she said. Hinderscheid believes the uniform is an important part of the Scouting experience. “When the boys wear the uniform, they should be wearing it with pride,” she said. Kalvin thinks the uniform is an identifying mark for Scouts and it lets others know “that guy’s in Scouts.” Hinderscheid was willing to invest in UNIFORM: TO PAGE 14

PUBLIC SAFETY Police Reports Between June 27 and July 3, the Richfield Police Department answered the following calls: June 27 — An officer responded to report of for property damage at a construction site at 76th Street and Portland Avenue. The construction site manager showed the officer a CAT 385C front-end loader that had graffiti in black spray paint on it causing $500 in damage. The damage had occurred between June 24 and June 27. The graffiti did not appear to be gang related. The police responded to the Hobby Warehouse, 7144 Chicago Ave. S., on a report of property damage. The owner stated that graffiti was spray painted in black on the south side and the north side of the business causing $200 in damage. The damage occurred sometime between June 25 and June 27. June 28 — An officer stopped a vehi-

cle for speeding near the intersection of 68th Street West and Lyndale Avenue South. Three passengers were cited for underage consumption. The driver was cited for speeding and was released. On the 6400 block of Oliver Avenue South, two juveniles were reported to have damaged a bike in the area. An officer located the suspects and issued citations. The bike was valued at $100 and was determined to be no longer rideable. June 29 — An officer stopped a vehicle on the 400 block of 73 Street East for a moving violation. The driver was uncooperative and disorderly. She was cited for disorderly conduct and speeding. The police observed a vehicle up on a curb in the area of 67th Street and 3rd Avenue. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for DWI and taken to jail. June 30 — An officer stopped a vehicle in the area of 69th Street and Penn Avenue for a moving violation. The driv-

er was later arrested for DWI and possession of narcotics. Police officers responded to the 7600 block of Penn Avenue South on a report of child pornography. A contract worker at an apartment complex found the material. A report was taken and is being investigated. July 1 — An officer on a routine patrol spotted a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver was later arrested for DWI and driving after cancellation, and was taken to jail. The police were dispatched to the 7200 block of 11th Avenue South on a report of an intoxicated male sitting in the driver’s seat of a black SUV. Field sobriety tests were conducted and a preliminary breath test was administered with a resulting blood alcohol concentration of 0.26. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Hennepin County Jail and the vehicle was impounded. July 2 — An officer responded to the 6700 block of Upton Avenue South on a report of a burglary. Upon police arrival, the victim stated that a male had woken her while fondling her and ran out of the door when she screamed. The

male was not located. The police were dispatched to Sports Authority, 1150 78th St. W., on a report of theft in progress with multiple individuals involved. The parties had left the store in a vehicle that was later stopped with one juvenile fleeing, but were apprehended. Three adults and two juveniles were issued citations for shoplifting and released at the scene. All the items were recovered and returned. The estimated value of the items was approximately $400. July 3 — An officer attempted a welfare check on an intoxicated male near the intersection of 66th Street and Nicollet Avenue. Upon making contact, the individual fled on foot but was later captured. The suspect resisted arrest and was arrested for obstruction of justice and transported to the Hennepin County Jail. In the area of 68th Street and 12th Avenue an officer conducted a routine traffic stop. The driver was issued a citation for possession of a small amount of marijuana and an instructional driver’s permit violation. The vehicle was towed.

A concrete pavement repair project planned this summer on France Avenue South between Highway 62 and Interstate 494 in Edina and Bloomington may be delayed. The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved the estimated $640,000 project Tuesday, June 28. But federal dollars for the project require approval of the contractor plan by the

Minnesota Department of Transportation, which was closed Friday, July 1, without a state budget in place. Harlan Hanson, construction division manager for the county transportation department, said initially he planned to open bids for the project in mid-July, but is no longer sure when that will happen.

in the approximately 2-mile stretch, is covered by $480,000 in federal funds and $220,000 in County State Aid funds. Hennepin County received about $3.6 million in federal funds as part of $95 million total given to MnDOT. The county transportation department identified France Avenue South as a segment of concrete pavement that could see a significant extension in useful life with rehabilitation. In addition to concrete repair, Hanson said the project would involve resealing of joints on the entire road segment. He anticipates one lane to be closed in each direction for the majority of the project, but at times, France Avenue South would be limited to one lane in each direction. He estimates the work would take three months to complete. “If the state comes back to work and we can get the necessary approvals, we could possibly start it yet this year,” Hanson said.

The city of Edina is reminding canoeists and kayakers that a section of Minnehaha Creek will be closed for six weeks. On Monday, July 11, Minnehaha Creek was closed between the Browndale dam and 58th Street for contractors to work on the 56th Street bridge. But buying everything new would have placed some financial pressure on the single-income household. Hinderscheid turned to the Boy Scouts Northern Star Council uniform exchange program. The exchange program is available twice a month and allows scouts to come to the office in Golden Valley and find used uniforms for free with a suggested donation if the family feels able to give. The program is supported largely by uniform donations collected during the Scouting for Uniforms campaign held by the Northern Star Council and Pilgrim Cleaners during the month of July. Hinderscheid reached out to other members of Troop 534 and collected a list of “orders” of items needed by scouts in the area. Then three families made the trek to visit the exchange and fill as many orders as they could. Kalvin found everything he needed, and Hinderscheid estimates that about 12 other scouts in the troop also

received needed pieces for their uniforms. “It’s a great program,” Hinderscheid said. “It’s a blessing for many people.” She estimates that paying the suggested donations for uniforms cost her less than an eighth of the price for new uniforms. “For us to be able to outfit our son to have the privilege to go to camp was huge,” she said. Hinderscheid said when her boys are done with a uniform, they pass it on to others. She appreciates how the exchange program makes it easy to share uniforms with those who need them. “I just think that it gives you an opportunity to give back, and it makes it very affordable for families, especially in this economy,” she said. “And there’s no sense in wasting items … someone should be able to reuse them.” It’s especially easy to donate uniforms during the month of July. Uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Everyday the residents are offered some type of modified exercise to stay healthy and keep active. Whether it is using simple arm lifts with light hand weights or using rubber tubes for stretching, Sheridan House provides a daily dose of measured movement. Every Wednesday the residents play bingo, and each Sunday a church sermon is provided. For a little pampering, each Saturday the residents are able to get their nails done and twice a month a volunteer visits to give foot massages and pedicures. “I am committed to the idea that the elderly can stay in a home setting,” Kundert said. The methods and ideals Kundert applies to Sheridan House has given her residents more than a place to stay and a helping hand. “I have really worked hard for 15 years to be able to take care of people in my home. They are like my family,” Kundert said.

Project FROM PAGE 1 Wellington Management has sought out the city’s approval and input on the design, layout and possible tenants to occupy the spaces to be built, by appearing before the council during multiple special study sessions. At the June 28 special city council work session, a next to final draft of plans were presented to the council by Wellington. The plans included three separate building structures, on the north, east and west sides of the lot making a “U” shape around a large parking lot to be entered in form the south. The building on the north side will be a LA Fitness health club. A letter of intent has been signed by the LA Fitness, according to Wellington. The LA Fitness structure will be approximately 45,000 square feet, according to

Wellington. Frattallone’s Ace Hardware Store has expressed interest in the structure on the east side of the property, according to Wellington. “Frattalone’s is in three other of our properties. We have a great standing relationship with them,” he said. No agreements have been signed, but the plans included a 17,000-square-foot space, with a 14,000-square-foot building, which would allow a possible future garden center. The building structure on the west side is being reserved for a possible restaurant and other small businesses and will approximately be 5,000 square feet in size. “Don’t quote me on it, but we might have possible interest from Pizza Lucé,” Wellington said during the study session. This draft of plans was met by the city council with positive feedback. “We need to get people in our community. I like your concept,” Councilmember Tom Fitzhenry said.

Councilmember Sue Sandahl expressed positive interest with the addition of more green space and safer pedestrian amenities. Timothy Carter, general manager at Richfield Bloomington Honda and Richfield Chamber of Commerce representative, said he was happy to see a two-way conversation going on between the city and the management company. This project is estimated to cost $14 million, but the upside to the city is that Wellington Management is not asking for any financial assistance, according to Wellington. As a result, Councilmember Fred Wroge pointed out that when Wellington buys the property it will be their property and the city will not have much say in what happens to it. However, Wellington is continuing to strive for the council’s support and input. After all, “We are particular about this property because this is a corner in our downtown,” Goettel said.

Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. Richfield native will assist new head coach Mike Yeo Darby Hendrickson excelled in hockey on the high school, college and professional levels. Richfield’s native son was always known as a “coach’s player” because of his work ethic, dynamic personality and hockey skills. Hendrickson was an All-State hockey forward at Richfield High and was named Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey in 1991. He went on to play two seasons at the University of Minnesota before embarking on a professional career in the NHL that included 518 games with four organizations – Toronto, Vancouver, Minnesota and Colorado. Hendrickson also spent three seasons playing pro hockey in Europe. After retiring, Hendrickson kept connected with the sport, serving as a hockey analyst for Fox Sports North while also working for the NHL Players Association. But he resigned from those two jobs to take a shot at a coaching career. Hendrickson joined the Minnesota Wild coaching staff as one of Todd Richards’ assistants last season. But Richards’ tenure ended when he was fired after the 2010-11 season as the Wild missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Valuable lessons Hendrickson learned many valuable lessons coaching under Richards. Unfortunately, one lesson was that coaches are fired for not winning and that meant the end for Richards as Wild head coach. Hendrickson’s employment with the Wild was also jeopardized after Richards was let go. However, new head coach Mike Yeo added assistant Darryl Sydor and retained Hendrickson, Rick Wilson and goalie coach Bob Mason a week ago. “I enjoyed working with Todd last season,” said Hendrickson. “We were in the playoff hunt until the wheels fell off late in the season. “The coaches tried to have positive

Hendrickson is grateful for the opportunity to coach with Yeo. “I have known Mike through training camps in the past and he is impressive as a coach and person,” said Hendrickson. “He is a very honest person and has a good value system. “I am excited about our new coaching staff and the team’s future. We have a lot of young players that need to be developed and I will do my best to help them out.” Hendrickson will continue to communicate to the bench from the press box during games and work with players during practices.

Young coaching staff Hendrickson will be part of one of the youngest coaching staffs in the NHL. Mason and Wilson are longtime assistant coaches but Hendrickson (38), Sydor (39) and Yeo (37) should bring enthusiasm to a team in a player-development mode. “I think my age was an asset last season because I could relate to the problems facing inexperienced players,” said Hendrickson. “I was able to interact well with the young guys and hope that continues this season.” Hendrickson and the new Wild coaching staff hope to harness that young talent and create a perennial playoff contender.

The former Richfield High School, University of Minnesota and NHL hockey standout will remain on the Minnesota Wild coaching staff during the 2011-12 season. Mike Yeo, the Wild’s new head coach, hired Hendrickson as an assistant last week. Hendrickson coached under previous Wild head coach Todd Richards for one season.

His father Larry was one of the state’s most successful high school hockey coaches, serving at Richfield, Apple Valley and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Darby and his wife Dana (Erickson) Hendrickson live in Minnetonka with sons Mason, Beckett and Rennick and daughter Addison. Dana was an All-State golfer during her prep career at Richfield High School.

Collin Randolph The 2011 Richfield High graduate won his school’s Top Scholar Award and was awarded a National Merit Scholarship. Randolph maintained an A average in the classroom and earned athletic letters in soccer, Nordic skiing and track. He will attend the University of Minnesota this fall. USA Cup back for 27th year Soccer extravaganza runs July 15-23 at National Sports Center BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS The numbers, as they are every year with the Schwan’s USA Cup, are staggering. The annual extravaganza will once again be the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. It begins Friday, July 15, at the National Sports Center in Blaine. This year, 942 teams have registered – 25 more than a year ago – in a field that includes teams from 17 countries, 20 states and 59 Minnesota communities. Organizers already avoided what could have been a crippling hurdle. The NSC is a state facility but is operated by a non-profit foundation, meaning it is able to stay open during the government shutdown. Good thing, too. The economic impact is expected to be more than $20 million during the 2011 tournament. “It brings in money to the state,” said USA Cup media director Barclay Kruse. “There is no arguing that.” This will be 27th year of the event. As always, the soccer is the highlight. The highest level will be in two Puma vElite tournaments. Eight elite boys teams from across the country will compete for a trip to Portugal to train with Sporting Lisbon FC, while seven elite girls clubs play for an expenses-paid trip to the Women’s Professional Soccer championship game. This year is the first for the girls vElite tournament. With what’s at stake, teams in both vElite tournaments are expected to play for keeps. “It won’t be a beauty contest,” Kruse said. “They’ll be playing hard, because they’ll want those trips. As far as prizes go, I can’t imagine anything better for these kids.” The vElite Tournament will run during the USA Cup’s weekend tournament July 15-17. The weeklong event begins Monday, July 18, with the official kickoff coming during the opening ceremonies Tuesday, July 19. Firemen’s slowpitch tourney boasts 160-team field Bloomington hosts four-day softball extravaganza BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington will be the focal point of slowpitch softball enthusiasts July 14-17. The 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Tournament will be bigger and better than ever, according to director Jeff Barnes. The Bloomington native has either played in or managed the mid-summer softball extravaganza for much of its history. This edition of the Firemen’s tourney has attracted 160 men’s, women’s and corec teams from all over the state and country. More than 20,000 fans, players and tournament volunteers are expected to attend the four-day event headquartered at Valley View Park. “Our tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the state and the Upper Midwest,” said Barnes, who has directed the event since 1976. “There is a 300-team tournament headquartered in Bismarck, N.D. “But that tournament is spread out on fields over a regional area instead of being located like we are in one city – Bloomington. Our tournament is a summer reunion for players and spectators. We have fans that actually fly in to the Twin Cities to attend our event each year.” The 160-team field includes Class A through Class D slowpitch softball teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada as well as squads from across the Twin Cities metro area and outstate Minnesota. Many teams represent Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Richfield, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Burnsville, Rosemount, Apple Valley and Lakeville. Two all-star charity games kick off the Firemen’s tournament Thursday, July 14, at Valley View Park in Bloomington. The opening all-star matchup pits the Bloomington Police against the Bloomington Firefighters at 6:30 p.m. on Red Haddox Field. The Bloomington Police won last year’s all-star game. A game featuring over-30 and under-30 all-star teams follows at 7:30 p.m. Last summer, the under-30 all-stars were victorious. There will be a homerun derby open to all comers from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, July

15, at Valley View. Double-elimination tournament competition begins at 6 p.m. Friday at Valley View and Dred Scott Fields in Bloomington. Action continues at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 16. Saturday’s final games start at 9:15 p.m. All action Sunday, July 17, takes place at Valley View beginning at 8 a.m. Championship games are 3, 4 and 6 p.m. There will be six tournament brackets – men’s Upper (32 teams), men’s Tier II (40 teams), men’s Tier III (36 teams), women’s Tier II (12 teams), women’s Tier III (16 teams) and co-rec (24 teams). “Many teams use our tournament to prepare for post-season state and national competition,” said Barnes. “We work hard to maintain competitive balance in each of our brackets. “We have a good mixture of experienced and young teams. And many of those younger squads want to get into

our competitive upper brackets.” All proceeds from the Firemen’s tournament are donated to youth organizations that provide volunteer assistance during the four-day event. “We are grateful for the 350 volunteers who help make this tournament work,” said Barnes. “Bloomington Knights of Columbus is our main sponsor, but we have many other local organizations assisting us as well.” Among those Bloomington organizations (and the services they provide) are: Kennedy choir (food), St. Bonaventure Church and Kennedy track (pop), Bloomington Retired Firefighters (popcorn), Knights of Columbus (adult beverages), Lions Club (sweet corn), Kennedy wrestling (labor, water, sports drinks), Bloomington hockey Mites (cleanup) and Bloomington Gold Legion baseball (field maintenance).
