Will the city of Richfield get a bandshell? At a special city council work session June 28, Richfield Recreation Services Director Jim Topitzhofer, as a representative of the Community Services Committee, gave a presentation on the ins and outs of putting a bandshell in Richfield. “The purpose of this presentation is to see if we want to spend more time and effort exploring this project,” Topitzhofer said. During his proposal, Topitzhofer reported to city council members on the many benefits Richfield would receive such as an improvement to the quality of life that attracts tax-paying businesses and residents and a potential boost in local economy by attracting visitors outside of the community. Other community benefits mentioned included a strengthening in Richfield’s appeal and cultural vitality and a sense of place and social fabric in Richfield to preserve cultural meaning and heritage. “There is national research that proves bandshell amenities do increase surrounding property value,” Topitzhofer said. Living a life with purpose “The purpose of life is a life with purpose,” Diane Ahlquist said as she accepted the Gene and Mary Jacobsen Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Following in the steps of her mother and father, Ahlquist has led and continues to lead a purpose filled life. Her fellow volunteers and the staff at Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People nominated Ahlquist for the award. She has worked with VEAP for eight years. “If you like what you do and who you do it with, why not? That’s the blessing of being retired,” Ahlquist said. The nomination was based on Ahlquist’s dedication to the VEAP cause. Every Wednesday she shows up to volunteer, she is respectful to all the clients and believes in what she is doing for her community. Along with the Outstanding Citizen Award, Ahlquist was presented by State
Rep. Linda Slocum with a Certificate of Commendation signed by Gov. Mark Dayton. The commendation is to recognize Ahlquist’s commitment in strengthening her community and human rights efforts. “I had no idea I would receive this,” Ahlquist said. Ahlquist moved to Richfield in 1966 right out of college. She taught in special education for Bloomington Public Schools for 37 years. Along with VEAP, Ahlquist volunteers her time with Loves and Fishes, Richfield Community Council and sits on five committees at St. Peters Church in Richfield. Being too busy is no excuse, according to Ahlquist. “Look inside and ask yourself are you living a life with purpose,” Ahlquist said.

Getting mom out of the house Richfield MOMS Club provides interaction for stay-at-home moms BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS From making a nightmare seem less scary with a kiss and a cuddle or magically getting out any stain on a favorite shirt, moms have many talents, but being a mom can have a down side — isolation. “We try to beat that stay-athome isolation,” MOMS Club of Richfield President Carly Kidd said. The MOMS Club of Richfield has been getting mothers out of the house and interacting with other mothers for twelve years. Back in 1983, MOMS Club was established in California by a stay-at-home mother tired of being at home alone. Now more than 2,000 chapters, with more
than 100,000 members, span across the nation, according to the chapter website. “Our main purpose is to give support for mothers, especially those that stay at home,” former President Gretchen Pyle said. The Richfield chapter fills each month with activities for mothers and their children to participate in together such as organized play dates, park and water pad visits, bike riding, book club, recipe club, crafts, coffee klatch, field trips and discussion groups. The group also meets each month for the always-anticipated ‘MOMS Night Out,’ where the women organize an adults-only excursion away from the kids with activities such as going to the movies, dinner, game nights, shopping, pot lucks or spa nights. Not limited to play dates, MOMS Club of Richfield spends time each month on different service projects. Whether they participate with Feed My
Starving Children, VEAP, Bundles of Love, park clean-ups or celebrating holidays with senior citizens, the group takes time to give back. “It is a great way to know other moms with kids the same age as yours and as time goes by you build great, lasting relationships with those moms,” Kidd said. The Richfield chapter is 40 members strong, meeting the fourth Monday of each month at 9 a.m., at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church, 5760 Portland Ave., Minneapolis. “We are always open for moms to come and see what we are about,” Kidd said. An application and a yearly due is all that is required to join; and because MOMS Club understands that choosing to stay home with the children can often be accompanied by considerable financial sacrifice, dues are only $25 per year. Info: richfieldmoms.com.
Bandshell FROM PAGE 1 None of the benefits could be applied if the bandshell is not used, however. The growing Richfield Concerts in the Park, an official home for the Richfield Symphonic Band, school, church and other concerts, outdoor theater, weddings and graduations were all listed as potential uses. The two potential locations presented on by Topitzhofer were at the site of the old Lyndale Garden Center and at Veterans Park, southeast of the ice arena. Councilmember Fred Wroge said that in order for a bandshell to be successful in Richfield it would have to be in Veterans Park. Councilmembers Sue Sandahl and Tom Fitzhenry agreed that Veterans Park was the better of the locations, with Sandahl stating, “Veterans Park is so well used.” The aesthetics of the bandshell were also discussed; with the mention of a prefabricated
band shell should the financial end restrict the project. A slide show of other metroarea bandshells, such as the structures in Maple Grove, near Lake Harriet and in Red Wing, gave the council an idea on what the project could look like. All of the examples featured a three-way enclosed structure with glass backing to make the rear of the band shells see through. The glass feature appealed to Mayor Debbie Goettel as well as the other council members. A member of the Richfield Symphonic Band spoke to add incentive and perspective on a three-sided enclosure to allow for the sound to carry to the audience rather than disappear through any open space in the rear. According to Topitzhofer, the band shell would have a 50 foot by 35 foot stage, just enough to seat a 50 member band, with a minimum of 300 audience seats. The Community Services Committee will continue to investigate the possibility of the installation.

Richfield City Council mulls change in waste container storage guidelines BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Richfield residents may have to rethink how they store their garbage, refuse and recyclable containers, depending on the fate of a potential amendment to the city code. The Richfield City Council conducted a first reading on June 28 of an ordinance that would require waste containers to be stored within an enclosed structure or screened from public view between weekly collections. The amendment, which is scheduled for a second reading July 26, would require residents to ensure their waste containers cannot be seen from the street. Materials used to screen waste containers may consist of a wall, fence, evergreen plantings or other screening material of at least 50 percent opacity. Enclosures or screens must comply with all city codes regarding to setback and height requirements.
‘Change affects people in many ways, but if you really care what the city looks like, people will comply.’ The potential amendment is a result of the work of the citizen-based Property Excellence Task Force, a group established by the city council in 2009 to recommend changes to ordinances and polices with the goal of improving the livability and property values in the community. The city council instructed staff to bring a draft ordinance addressing the issue of waste container storage earlier this summer. If the amendment is approved, resi-

dents will have six months to adhere to the new requirements, which would into effect Jan. 1, 2012. City council members supported the measure, which could potentially reduce the amount of litter in Richfield. However, Mayor Debbie Goettel acknowledged that the amendment may create extra work for residents, including building or installing structures to screen their waste containers and having to shovel a path from their containers to the driveway in the winter. Councilmember Fred Wroge voiced his opinion, arguing in favor of the amendment. “Change affects people in many ways,” Wroge said, “but if you really care what the city looks like, people will comply.” The council also discussed ways to notify residents of the new requirements should the amendment be approved. Governor, legislature get a big red “F” So let’s say you blow a fuse in your brain and you’re rushed to the hospital. When you get there, the doctor informs you he can’t operate today. He had a dispute with his wife over breakfast. When he arrived at the hospital, he had a dispute with chief of staff. There was no way to resolve the disputes so sorry, you have to die. That might be a bit over-dramatizing what a state government shutdown is all about, but you get the idea. The Minnesota Legislature and Gov. Mark Dayton refused to operate and we – all of us reading this who helped elect them and who pay their salaries – are the losers. If you have someone who refuses to do his or her job like the physician referenced above, the answer is simple. “You’re fired,” to quote Donald Trump. Unfortunately, we have to wait
PAUL WAHL Senior Managing Editor Sun Newspapers until the next election cycle to “fire” any of our politicians. And voters have notoriously short memories. My best guess is this shutdown won’t even be a topic during the upcoming campaigns. Any elected official on either side of this issue who believes the people of Minnesota are going to buy either argument for failing to avoid a state shutdown may be wearing some hefty rose-colored glasses. Conservative, moderate or liberal, Minnesotans understand what it means to “do good work,” as Garrison Keillor is fond of saying. What happened July 1, 2011, does not represent “good work”
on the part of anyone. They didn’t “get-er-done,” as Larry the Cable Guy would say. Perhaps Minnesota’s politicians need to take a page from the old NASA handbook. “Failure is not an option.” You remember those days, no doubt, when all of us had differences of opinions but compromised to accomplish the goal. But when it meant saving the lives of three astronauts, no one at NASA was willing to give up and shut down operations in Houston. The best face that can be put on the entire injustice is that cooler heads will prevail over the long holiday weekend and an agreement can be reached Tuesday. This is being written Friday morning to accommodate short holiday print deadlines here at the newspaper. What happens once the lights are turned back on is up to us as taxpayers and voters. If “crisis
management” is your preferred form of governance, then you should fold your hands over your chest and laugh heartily at everyone who was harmed in the process. If your sense of fair-play and propriety has been breached, the ball is now in your court. You can yawn and walk away … politics as usual … or you can stand up and let your thoughts be known. Whatever side of the political aisle you are on, the sad fact remains that the legislature and the governor were given a job to do and they failed to do it. The patient died. Most of us were prepared to live with whatever was decided, but to simply not decide is unacceptable. As a taxpayer and their employer, clearly the governor and legislature have earned a “fails to meet minimum expectations” rating.
Across state lines: When sports meet life BY MATTHEW HANKEY SUN NEWSPAPERS Moving across state lines is a complicated endeavor. When sports allegiances are brought into the equation, it makes for a complete mess. I moved from Eau Claire, Wis. to the Twin Cities metro area three years ago. I was never more aware of this than on a recent trip to Milwaukee to take in a Minnesota Twins-Milwaukee Brewers game with my wife, sister and her husband. I have been a Green Bay Packers fan since age seven, but never bothered to hop on the Brewers bandwagon. Born in Ohio, I was a Cincinnati Reds fan, but renounced all baseball ties after the strike in the mid1990s. In 2008, the Brewers made the playoffs for the first time since I was born. My faith was
renewed, and I followed every game that season with a bandwagon fervor that Minnesota sports fan can appreciate. In the few years following, I have followed the Brewers while at the same time rooting for the Twins. I warmed up to the Twinkies because of their lowkey but talented clubhouse, and I could justify rooting for them since their rivalry with the Brewers had largely become defunct save for two annual interleague series. My sports allegiances were put to the ultimate test when these two teams faced off on a recent Saturday night in Milwaukee. Going into the game, the allegiances of my wife, sister and her husband were set in stone. My wife is a diehard Twins fan and life-long Minnesota resident, and my sister and her husband are casual sports fans and
default Brewers fans by location. It was up to me. Do I root for the Brewers and alienate my wife, or root for the Twins and turn my back on my home state? I made my decision and let’s just say I’m still married, even if it killed a little part of my soul. Unfortunately, at least that night, I made the wrong decision. The Brewers crushed the Twins 11-1 in Game 2 of a series the Brew Crew ended up sweeping. Each time the Brewers scored a run, the fans at Miller Park stood up and roared. I remained seated, slightly deflated, but secretly gloating in the Brewers success that day. No matter your team affiliation, it was easy to see that on that day, the Milwaukee Brewers were the better team. Had the Twins not had half their roster on the disabled list, the outcome could have been much different.
In any case, I am over the crushing defeat, and look forward to rooting for both teams the rest of the season. That said, my love of baseball will never be as strong as when I rooted for the Reds in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Football has permanently replaced it in my heart. Even though I was embarrassed with my decision two weekends ago, I can rest easy knowing that the Green Bay Packers are the NFL Super Bowl Champions.

Principally blessed Richfield Catholic school gains new leadership BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield’s Blessed Trinity Catholic School is under new management as Patrick O’Keefe has taken over the reins as principal. O’Keefe will be replacing Sue Kerr, who has accepted the principal position at Carondelet Catholic School in Minneapolis. Prior to his new position, O’Keefe has spent the last six years as an educator and assistant principal at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in McAllen, Texas. “I have missed far too many Twins’ games,” he said. After O’Keefe’s family grew by one with the birth of his son Liam, he and his wife decided they would like to be closer to family in Minnesota, O’Keefe said. “I had been looking in the Twin Cities for job opportunities in Catholic schools, when I saw the position opening at Blessed Trinity, I engaged the situation immediately,” O’Keefe said. O’Keefe was the unanimous choice of the search committee, which was comprised of members from the school board, corporate board, faculty and all three parish priests, according to the Rev. Tony VanderLoop, canonical administrator at Blessed Trinity. “They liked what I had to say, and I liked what they had to say about their passion for their school and of Catholic education,” O’Keefe said.
A Catholic education is different, it is bigger than just developing the academics; a Catholic education develops the whole person, said O’Keefe. “My Catholic education has been an important part of forming me as a person,” he said. O’Keefe grew up attending Saint Pascal Baylon School on the east side of Saint Paul. After graduating in 2001 from DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, O’Keefe completed his undergraduate studies and Master of Education degree at the University of Notre Dame in the Alliance for Catholic Education program. With family ties in Richfield, O’Keefe’s childhood has many fond memories of the area. “I grew up attending the Richfield Fourth of July Parade every year,” O’Keefe said. O’Keefe’s contract began July 1. “I am thrilled to come back home and looking forward to continuing the great work Sue [Kerr] has been doing,” O’Keefe said. Kerr has been the principal for three years and was the assistant principal for one year before that. She has been a Catholic educator for 20 years before becoming assistant principal. “Thank you so much for allowing me into your lives and for sharing with me the responsibility of educating our school children in the traditions of our faith. I love working with such involved parents and parishioners who are willing to help out and share themselves for the benefit of our school and our children,” Kerr said as words of farewell.
Patrick O’Keefe

Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE unknown suspect in Richfield. The check mailed was valued at $3,000 drawn from the victim’s Wells Fargo bank account to purchase eight bottles of high-end collectable wine. The victim said that he saw the ad on May 24, and responded. He sent the check by FedEx through his FedEx account that was traceable along with instructions and UPS labels for the returning wine. The UPS account allowed the victim to be able to track the use of the labels and the package. As of June 6, the wine had not been delivered and shipment tracking indicated no shipment of the purchase. The victim’s bank said the check had been cashed immediately upon receipt at the Wells Fargo bank in Richfield. An investigation is under way. A suspect has been identified, but not yet contacted at this time. The police responded to SuperAmerica, 2913 W. 66th St. W., for a gas drive-off. The manager stated that gas that was taken was valued at $43.73. The vehicle was a silver Pontiac Grand Prix. The suspect has committed two other gas drive-offs worth
$47.50 and $33.47 prior to this one. The suspect is a young black female. The manager has provided video and wishes to prosecute. June 22 — An officer was dispatched to the 7100 block of Irving Avenue South on a damage to property call. The homeowner showed the officer several areas on his front picture window and fascia where unknown person(s) had struck his home with eggs sometime the previous evening. The victim said that there did not seem to be any damage, however he is concerned because last Monday evening someone came to his back door and rang his doorbell. The victim said he responded to the door, turned the lights on, but no one was there. The victim wants to make sure his home is not being cased. The police responded to the 300 block of 78th Street East, where three juvenile males were taking items from a parked vehicle. One of the juveniles was caught on a bike that was reported stolen and a citation was issued. June 23 — An officer stopped a vehicle on 78th Street and Portland Avenue. The victim’s primary concern is that she just spent $8,000 for the driveway and she now has permanent tire prints, which the cement crew told her there is nothing they can do about it. The officer advised the victim to call him and they would investigate if she saw children riding bikes with similar tires. As far as funerals go, there wasn’t much sadness. The Normandale Community College newspaper, Lions’ Roar, published its last edition in April. The paper, which dates back more than four decades, was published once every three weeks, featuring many of the traditional articles and features common to collegiate newspapers. But like major daily and community weekly newspapers around the country, the leadership of Lions’ Roar has stopped the presses. The student media, however, isn’t going away. Since 2004 the college’s newspaper staff has had an online presence in addition to its traditional newspaper. There were several reasons why it made
sense to shift the focus to the online content and away from the print product, according to faculty advisor Mark Plenke. “This is a generation of people wedded to their iPhones,” Plenke said. Whether it be through a mobile device or a traditional computer, the Lions’ Roar website garners more than 1,000 unique visitors per month, he said. Conversely the newspaper staff is recycling a greater percentage of the 2,000 papers printed every three weeks, he explained. With the shift to an online format the Lions’ Roar staff will function more like a daily newspaper staff, according to Plenke. Without collegiate sports to cover each week and little opportunity to cover breaking news for its print product, Lions’ Roar has operated more like a magazine, Plenke explained. Students have compensated by exploring perspectives about what happens on campus, but the end of the print product will bring a change in emphasis. Instead of the website being secondary to NEWSPAPER: TO NEXT PAGE

Newspaper FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the print product, it will now be the sole focus of staff writers, allowing a focus similar to that of a daily newspaper, he said. It was a change that wasn’t possible without discontinuing the print product, he noted. Providing daily content online in addition to articles for the print edition was more work than the Lions’ Roar staff could handle. “It’s twice as much work, or more,” he said. Most agreed, “This is the right time to do this.” Discontinuing the print edition was not an economic decision. Sure, students were picking up the newspaper with less frequency, but the Lions’ Roar staff has an advantage over its commercial counterparts, it is the beneficiary of student fees to fund its staffing and daily operations. Advertising sold within the paper was comparable to the cost of printing it, so the news gathering functions shouldn’t be affected by the loss of print advertising revenue, Plenke explained. The challenges of overseeing a digital news staff will be similar, however, to the challenges of the past several years.
Plenke – a communications department instructor – has been the Lions’ Roar advisor since 2003. Unlike four-year campuses where newspaper staffs are comprised largely of journalism department students, the Lions’ Roar staff is comprised of students who may have taken communications classes at the college, but haven’t had the benefit of two or three years of rigorous journalism instruction. “These are students who have not made up their mind about what their careers are going to be, for the most part,” he said. In addition to teaching students how to construct a news article rather than an essay, there’s an annual turnover rate of about 90 percent, sometimes as high as 75 percent between semesters, he said. Some students do move on to a fouryear school and pursue a journalism degree as a result of their Normandale experience, Plenke noted. The college will be introducing five new digital media courses next year, so the conversion of the paper goes hand-inhand with that, Plenke explained. As they think about media careers, “this will be a better training ground for students,” Plenke said. The Lions’ Roar website is lionsroar.info.

Former Toro engineer honored for inventiveness BY ROXI REJALI • CONTRIBUTING WRITER In Dick Thorud’s world of ideas, there’s always a better way. During his 34 years as a design and research engineer for the Toro Company, building a better lawn mower or snow thrower was his goal. Creative problem-solving was his method. “I didn’t know that they would work,â€? said Thorud of his inventions. “That’s the excitement of the whole thing, that sometimes you can come up with great ideas. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t.â€? Thorud was a prolific inventor, earning 78 U.S. and international patents, said Larry Buckley, division counsel for Toro. Many of Thorud’s innovations are still used in Toro products and they played an important part in the company’s success in the residential lawn mower and snow thrower markets, Buckley said. Last year, the Bloomington-based company reported $1.7 billion in sales. In recognition of his accomplishments, Thorud was inducted into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame in

retired from Toro in 2000. Working as senior principal research engineer at Toro’s research and development unit, Thorud was free to explore ideas and research market trends before developing full-size prototypes and testing them in the field. But he also worked on projects assigned by the marketing department, with the goal of creating high-quality products that consumers would buy.

Thorud drew on his art training to fuel his creativity. As a student at South High School and Augsburg College in Minneapolis, he took courses in art as well as advanced math and science, and later earned a fine arts undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota. “I had dual interests. I liked the creative freedom you had in art and I also liked the discipline that came in mathematics and sciences, said Thorud, 77. Although Thorud didn’t have an engineering degree, his curiosity and enthusiasm for learning spurred him to take short courses at area colleges in fields like hydraulics, plastics and internal combustion engines. Art was a key to his success. He created concept sketches and built miniature clay models in his office, effective tools to persuade co-workers and bosses that his concepts would work in the real world. He created a cartoon strip modeled after the “Calvin and Hobbes comic series to explain the then-novel concept of mulching. “I was able to visualize things in my mind and see them working, he said. “You have an affinity for spatial relationships. That talent set Thorud apart from other engineers or technicians, said Buckley, a former Toro patent attorney. “He just had this kind of artistic flair about inventing, Buckley said. “He worked at that interface between technology and the arts. Buckley also remembers Thorud as

Inventor FROM PAGE 14 soft-spoken and modest. ”I can’t recall him ever promoting himself,” Buckley said. “Dick was always promoting his inventions, which you kind of have to do when you’re in research and development.” Many of Thorud’s innovations were commercial successes, but he’s proud-

est of the ones that enhanced product safety or benefitted the environment. In 1969, Thorud developed the “Guardian” line of mowers, which incorporated safety features designed to prevent foot injuries and damage caused by debris thrown out of the mower’s path. For the first time, rear safety shields and foot guards were added to the machines, and led to the development of new federal safety standards for the industry, he said. The “Recycler” mulching system for lawn mowers was developed by 1988.
Before, grass clippings were collected in bags and hauled away to landfills, creating tons of waste. The new system chopped up the grass clippings into smaller pieces that could decompose and fertilize the lawn. Since retiring, Thorud has had more time to spend with his wife Darlene, two adult children and five grandchildren. He’s also filling his time with creative projects, including a one-man show of his photographs scheduled for early 2012 at the Bloomington Art Center. He’s also written, illustrated
and self-published 10 books and is working on a 500-page book about creativity. Creativity has always played an important role in Thorud’s life, whether it involved inventing new technology or more artistic projects. “The creative portion of the work is the same, whether you’re writing a book or writing an article or creating a photograph or a piece of sculpture,” he said. “It really doesn’t matter, because the creative part is always the same.”

Adolescence comes with a one-time window for building bones that will stay stronger into adulthood and beyond. That’s why it’s so important for young teens to “build their bone banks” with weight-bearing exercise and a diet rich in calcium. At least three cups of low fat or fat free milk plus other calcium-rich foods each day is a good rule. If you have children 11–15, make sure they take advantage of this critical time frame. They won’t get a second chance to build strong bones. A public service message from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Richfield’s Nick Olson got a taste of what college football training camp might be like when he joined the South squad for practices leading up to the 38th annual Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game June 25 at TCF Bank Stadium. Olson, a 2011 Richfield High School graduate, represented the Spartans in the all-star game. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Olson reported for the South All-Star team’s first practice June 19 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Olson, an offensive tackle, and his South teammates practiced twice a day until game day. The South ended up losing 17-7 to the North All-Stars in the game featuring the top graduated high school senior football players in the state. “It was a great experience practicing with and playing against so many good players,” said Olson. “South coach Dave Nelson taught me a lot of good offensive line techniques during the week. “And it was great to meet so many cool guys at the all-star camp. I made several new friends. It was disappointing to lose the all-star game, but we were pretty competitive and trailed only 14-7 before the North kicked a field goal in the final two minutes.” Olson was grateful for the support of his family and friends at the game. FROM PREVIOUS PAGE hand for the all-star game media day event June 22 at TCF Bank Stadium. Todd is Richfield’s head football coach and athletic director. Warren coached football and taught at Brooklyn Center High School before retiring. “Both my dad and grandfather have given me good advice,” said Nick. “They simply told me to play hard and try my best. “And that is what I plan to do in college this fall.” Olson will attend the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. He reports for fall training camp Aug. 11 and should be in good shape for the rigorous college practice sessions. “I’ve been lifting weights and working out regularly this summer,” said Olson. “Practicing for the all-star game and playing for the Richfield Reds American Legion baseball team is also keeping me in shape. “I’m excited to attend college and play football. South Dakota’s coaches told me that I would probably be redshirted as a freshman.” Olson played offensive tackle and defensive end at Richfield High and was also the team’s long snapper. He is uncertain what position he will end playing in college. “The South Dakota coaches indicated they might try me at center,” said Olson. “I am willing to play anywhere. Richfield Reds made a productive trek to northern Minnesota June 24-26. The Reds American Legion baseball team came home with a runner-up trophy from the Grand Rapids invitational tournament. Richfield won four straight games before losing 11-9 to North St. Paul in the title game. “We attained double digits in hits during every tournament game,” said Reds coach Dave Boie. “All 16 of our players contributed hits and RBIs. “This Richfield team had the best five-game offensive stretch it has had for years.”

Gopher Classic pairings One of the largest American Legion baseball tournaments in the country takes place this weekend. And the Richfield Reds will compete in this elite event. The 2011 Jim Hanus Gopher Classic has expanded from 48 to 66 teams and from eight to 11 sites. Pool play begins Friday, July 8, and the tournament’s championship rounds conclude Tuesday, July 12, at Minnetonka Veterans Field. Eleven pool winners and five runner-up teams advance to the final rounds Monday and Tuesday. Richfield Reds will enter pool play at North St. Paul Friday at 11:30 a.m. against Coon Rapids. The Reds play again that day at 2 p.m. against Albert Lea. On Saturday, Richfield meets Watertown (S.D.) at 11:30 a.m. The Reds play twice on Sunday, meeting West Fargo (N.D.) at 4:30 p.m. and North St. Paul at 7.

Raheim Hampton had three hits and two RBI. Ryder Klopp and Dearing chipped in with two hits apiece. In third-round action, Richfield beat North St. Paul 119 in nine innings. Zoellmer was the winning pitcher. The Reds rallied with three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. Peterson singled and scored on Dearing’s double. Hampton singled in another run and Jegtvig doubled in the
third run. Richfield Reds scored six runs in the ninth. Ryder Klopp’s single drove in three runs. Joe Griffin provided the go-ahead RBI single. Peterson also had a two-run double. Ryder Klopp finished with three hits and six RBI. In the championship round, Richfield beat Northfield 8-6 as Pederson was the winning pitcher. Fitzgerald was credited with a save. Zoellmer had three hits and four RBI. Jegtvig added three hits to the winning cause. North St. Paul edged Richfield 11-9 in the championship game. The Reds, 13-5 overall, left the tying runs on base.
Chester Bird’s American Legion team featuring Benilde-St. Margaret’s players will host pool play at the St. Louis Park-based private school. On Friday, Chester Bird meets Alexandria at 3:30 p.m. and follows with a 6 p.m. contest against Woodbury. Chester Bird faces West Warwick (R.I.) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sioux Falls East (S.D.) at 6 p.m. The Birds play Rochester Redhawks at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Junior golf tourney finals This week’s W. Duncan MacMillan Classic at Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove is hosting some of the top junior boys and girls golfers in the world. The 54-hole tournament began July 4 and wraps up Thursday, July 7. Ninety-six players were entered, including 30 Minnesotans along with players representing 16 states and three foreign countries (Brazil, Ecuador and Thailand). Anna Laorr of Eden Prairie is making her third appearance in the tournament and was a top-10 finisher the previous year. She is the state high school Class 2A individual champion from Breck School. Her twin brother Eric is also playing in the event, sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association. Final-round tee times are 7 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Other Eden Prairie entrants are Austin Wilson and Nate Williams. – COMPILED BY GREG KLEVEN

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
