Council will not reconsider community center permit BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Residents raised concerns about traffic and parking related to a planned community center, but the Bloomington City Council won’t reconsider the conditional-use permit it granted to the organization that will operate it. The council fielded questions pertaining to the Al Farooq Youth and Family Center during its May 16 meeting, two weeks after granting the organization a permit for use of the former school building at 8201 Park Ave. “The proposed use is too large for the neighborhood,” according to neighborhood resident Sally Ness. Resident Vi Rosek told the council that she is excited the empty building will be put back to use as a school, but “I’m not excited by what else is PERMIT: TO PAGE 25A

Riding a cupcake wave: Small treat means big business BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Once a favorite treat for tots, cupcakes have been re-discovered by grownups. From coast to coast, millions of consumers are peeling away paper lines and chowing down on dozens of flavors of the rich and tasty treat. Wedding cakes have been replaced by cupcake trees. The debate over whether they’re a fad or here to stay rages. Several area businesses have jumped on the bandwagon and plan to ride the cupcake wave as far as it will take them. “When we first heard about it, we thought it might be a fad and maybe had already passed us up,” said Tom Van Beusekom, president of Crown Plastics in Plymouth. His company is manufacturing and marketing a line of cupcake trees being sold online. The idea for the product was hatched when a bride asked Van Beusekom to create a suitable display device for wedding cupcakes. Crown
Plastics had been building and selling high-end coffee bean dispensers. That aspect of the business has cooled a bit. “I think there are as many coffee shops as there are going to be,” said Van Beusekom, who is a native of Loretto and a former mayor. “It was nice to have something come along to replace some of that business.” The trees are available online through crystalpalacecupcaketree.com. Orders have been shipped to dozens of countries, including Australia and Norway. One of Crown’s loyal customers in the west metro is Robin Johnson, who opened Sweet Retreat Cupcake Retreat in the trendy 50th and France area of Edina a year ago. Cupcakes, and more recently cupcake pops, are created and sold to customers at the bakery as well as through a growing catering market. “It’s creating a small bit of luxury everyone can afford and it makes everyCUPCAKES: TO NEXT PAGE

Cupcakes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE one happy,” said Johnson, who hatched the idea during what she calls a midlife crisis. Her first exposure to the cupcake craze came while visiting San Francisco. She made subsequent trips to Nashville and Chicago to gather input. She traveled to Sprinkles, the California-based chain of cupcake stores in Los Angeles. “The lines were out the door,” she said. Taking her degree in food science from University of Wisconsin–Madison, Johnson began developing recipes, including her signature butter crème frosting. Combinations and flavors vary with the season, but her red velvet and salted caramel varieties are consistent best sellers. She uses Van Beusekom’s trees in her store and on the catering side of the business. The trees come in a variety of sizes, ranging from three-tier to six-tier with an optional Lazy Susan base. Trees come in acrylic and a less expensive Celtec plastic. Acrylic varieties are clear plastic and the Celtec versions are a white plastic, Van Beusekom explained. “You can display cupcakes with the acrylic trees and not take away from the cupcakes,” Van Beusekom said. He is turning his design skills next to cake pops. Johnson makes them by blending smashed cupcakes and crème cheese frosting, shaping the mixture
into a ball and freezing them, then dipping them in white chocolate. Think cupcake on a stick. The stick is where Crown Plastics comes in, but that’s about all Van Beusekom is saying for now. The cupcake trend is believed to have originated more than a decade ago when the characters in “Sex and the City” began eating them at New York’s Magnolia Bakery. Cupcakes eventually made it onto the Oprah Winfrey Show, and foodies of all types fueled the fire. Cupcakes were on the menu when Reino Wuollet opened his first bakery in 1944, but sales and popularity over the past year have skyrocketed, according to Aaron Wuollet, manager of the company. “They’re easy to serve and a lot of fun,” said Wuollet, whose company operates stores in Edina, Robbinsdale and Wayzata, in addition to Minneapolis and St. Paul. To emphasize the fun, Wuollets plays with cake flavors and icings. About 45 combinations are available. Wuollets has also noticed the growing link between cupcake and nuptials. “They’re so much easier to serve at a wedding,” Wuollet said. Everyone with a finger in the cupcake business is trusting they will continue to be popular with consumers. “I’d hate to think they’re the next Krispie Kremes,” Johnson said. Van Beusekom admitted he wasn’t personally a big fan of cupcakes. “Most of athem have too dang much frosting,” he said.

Support grads with alcohol-free parties Serving alcohol to teens unsafe, illegal BY HEATHER HAEN ANDERSON CONNECTING WITH KIDS EDINA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Graduation from high school and a party to celebrate it are rites of passage for many teens. Like thousands of other Minnesota parents, I have a senior in high school who will graduate in just a few short weeks. And like thousands of other graduates, my daughter would like a party to celebrate her achievement. No longer a child, she is eager to start college in the fall and join the ranks of other adults. Planning her graduation party has been a lot of fun, but there are decisions to be made. Should we highlight her life in
high school or emphasize her college plans? Who should be on the guest list? What time of day? What food should we serve? Our easiest decision was to celebrate without alcohol – even for our guests of legal drinking age. We want to provide a safe place or our daughter and her friends while communicating our expectations that underage drinking is not acceptable. Besides the fact that it is against the law to serve alcohol to people under the age of 21, there are many other reasons we chose to host an alcohol-free party. First and foremost is our concern for the safety and wellbeing of all our guests. According to Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), alcohol use by teens affects their cognitive function-
ing and impairs their learning and memory. Teens, like all of us, make poor decisions while under the influence. When teens consume alcohol they are more likely to commit or be the victim of a crime. They are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors. They are more likely to die in an alcoholrelated car crash. I realize that some parents allow alcohol to be served at their children’s celebrations and I have heard several rationalizations for their decision. Many parents think that teens need to learn to use alcohol safely by drinking at home. Others, believing that students are going to drink anyway, want to provide a safe environment for them to do so. I’ve also had parents tell me that they want to reward their children for not using alcohol in high
school by offering it at their grad party. These arguments are wrong. The reality is that there is no safe amount of alcohol for teens because of their still developing brains. Also, many teens choose not to consume alcohol – over one-third, according to SADD. By celebrating without alcohol we can reinforce their decision to lead substance-free lives. Even though our children are graduating from high school and entering the ranks of adults, they are still our kids and it is our responsibility to keep them safe. So when you are planning their graduation party, honor their achievements and dreams with a safe, alcohol-free celebration. space. If there should be any reformation to the city’s stop sign usage, it should be at the 73rd and 70th Street railroad crossings, simply because the railroad traffic in this city is not a danger to an attentive driver. Justin Delzer Richfield
er bender costs thousands of dollars. And what is the cost of a stop or yield sign when weighed against serious injury or death to your loved one? Or your neighbor kid on a bike? Each and every one of you reading this has witnessed someone flying through these intersections at 30-plus mph, completely oblivious. My particular Bloomington neighborhood has a completely random pattern of uncontrolled versus controlled intersections and it’s dangerous, confusing and has been the scene of many accidents. Thank you Seth — I hope something can be done. “An ounce of prevention is worth of pound of cure.” Colleen Foley Bloomington
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stop signs standardize travel To the editor: In response to Seth Rowe’s column (“Uncontrolled intersections really grind my gears” May 19) in last week’s Sun-Current, I believe the decision to add stop signs at most of Richfield’s intersections has standardized travel in the city. Driving to daily errands is safer and easier due with minimal inconvenience. What surprised me is that two particular stop signs have not been discussed in the column, specifically those on 73rd Street and 70th Streets... and the railroad track. While I
believe in obeying stop signs, no matter how oddly they may appear to be placed, I find this is an inconvenience - perhaps an unnecessary one - requiring a stop at a crossing when passing trains in Richfield are few and far between. Trains that pass through Richfield are not fully loaded as in larger suburbs, travel slower than on other commercial routes, and none of the crossings in the city have obstructed views for approaching trains. Accordingly, there are many clues for drivers that a train is approaching a crossing. Note that the stop sign at Pleasant Avenue and 65th street is important for the boulevard and not the tracks specifically, as this stop sign is essential due to local pedestrian traffic and nearby retail
Control intersections To the editor: Thank you to Seth Rowe for his opinion/article regarding the ludicrousy of uncontrolled intersections. I have been a claim adjuster for a few decades now and can’t begin to tell you the extent of the damages incurred as a result of this inane idea. A simple fend-

and a 37-year-old Minneapolis man were arrested May 12 outside Pawn America, 8650 Lyndale Ave. S. A Bloomington police sergeant had parked in a nearby parking lot shortly before noon. The officer watched the Minneapolis man signal to the driver of a vehicle in the pawnshop parking lot before walking south on Lyndale Avenue. As he was walking away from the area he was looking over his shoulder repeatedly toward the officer’s squad car, Stehlik explained. The Columbia Heights man, driving the vehicle in the pawnshop lot, pulled out in a different direction. The officer called for backup and the two men were detained separately for questioning. The Minneapolis man identified the driver as his cousin and said he didn’t know why his cousin didn’t drive over to pick him up. The Columbia Heights man said repeatedly that he was at the pawnshop alone and didn’t know the Minneapolis man, Stehlik said. Upon further investigation police found that the two men had been cashing a check at the pawnshop. Although a pawnshop employee had seemingly made a successful phone call to a credit union phone number printed on the check in an effort to verify the account, further investigation found that the

A 30-year-old Richfield man was arrested on suspicion of theft after police found two men attempting to remove valuable wheels from vehicles at a Bloomington car dealership. The suspect was arrested during the early morning hours of May 14 after a brief chase from the parking lot of a Walser dealership on American Boulevard West. Police have received numerous reports of high-end wheels being stolen from vehicles throughout the city, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. A patrol officer was checking the parking lot of a condominium development that abuts the Walser dealerships and noticed a parked SUV that was similar in description to a suspect vehicle from a previous theft. The officer observed a blanket draping over the back seat of the SUV and hubcaps on the floor of the vehicle. A wheel was sitting on the ground in front of the vehicle, Stehlik said. The officer walked toward the tree line between the condominiums and a dealership lot. He observed a man repeatedly carrying wheels from the lot to the tree line. He also heard a second voice in the parking lot of the dealership, Stehlik explained. After calling for assistance officers approached the suspects, who fled the area on foot. Police caught the 30-yearold Richfield man, but were unable to catch the second man, according to Stehlik. Wheels were removed from two vehicles in the lot – a Chevy Silverado pickup truck and a Chevy Suburban SUV – while other vehicles had hubcaps removed. The wheels were valued at $900 each, Stehlik said. During an interview following his arrest, the suspect said he met the second man in south Minneapolis and knew him only by the nickname “Q.” Q offered the suspect $200 to help him remove wheels from vehicles, and the two men drove and parked separately, the suspect told police. The suspect had not been charged as of May 19 and no additional arrest had been made, Stehlik noted.

routing number, phone number and name of the credit union were incorrect. A debit card had been issued to the Minneapolis man in exchange for the $913 check, Stehlik noted.
Mall theft An 18-year-old Robbinsdale man was arrested after attempting to steal $100 from a woman who thought she was purchasing a used cell from the man inside Mall of America. The suspect was charged May 13 in Hennepin County District Court with one count of felony theft. If convicted he faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The 40-year-old Andover woman responded to the man’s online ad selling a cell phone for $100. The two had arranged to meet near elevators inside Mall of America. The man had informed the woman prior to meeting that she would have to hand him the money first, claiming that he had been robbed during a previous transaction, Stehlik said. The woman and her 15-year-old daughter met the man inside the mall to purchase the phone. She took $100 from her purse and the suspect snatched the money from her hand and began running, according to the complaint.
A 37-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on suspicion of burglary May 16 in connection with the theft of a computer. The computer was reported missing from Chu Vision Institute, 9117 Lyndale Ave. S., May 15. Landscape rocks had been thrown through a window of the business and surveillance video showed a man enter and leave the building with an object under his arm, according to a complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. Based upon the video, police provided a description of the perpetrator to the manager of a nearby apartment building. The manager identified the suspect as matching the description of the perpetrator. A photograph of the suspect also matched the image from the surveillance video, according to the complaint. The suspect was questioned and said that he had committed the burglary. Clothing in the man’s apartment matched clothing worn by the perpetrator in the surveillance video, the complaint noted. The man has at least five sequential felony convictions for either burglary or theft and is facing a felony burglary charge related to the May 15 incident. If convicted the man faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Credit card fraud Two Minneapolis men were arrested for attempting to purchase athletic shoes with a stolen credit card. The men, 20 and 21 years old, purchased an $89 pair of shoes from Finish Line at Mall of America May 15. After completing the transaction they decided to purchase a second pair of shoes at the store with the same credit card, Stehlik explained. During the second transaction the credit card machine prompted the clerk to verify the cardholder’s identity. When she asked for identification the two men fled the store with the pair of shoes previously purchased, leaving the credit card behind, Stehlik said. Mall security found the men inside the mall, leading to their arrest.

Gunman robs Bloomington couple BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A man wielding a semiautomatic handgun robbed two people in a Bloomington parking ramp last week. A 37-year-old Brooklyn Center man and a 28-year-old Iowa woman were walking through the parking ramp of the U.S. Bank building, 1550 American Blvd. E., at approximately 10 p.m. May 17 when the unidentified man approached them. The perpetrator was pointing a gun at them. The woman dropped her purse on the ground and the perpetrator ordered the man to give up his wallet. Racking the slide of his gun, the told the couple, “I’ll pull it, I’ll pull it,” according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik.

The man pulled out his wallet and showed the perpetrator there was $20 inside it, throwing the cash on the ground. The perpetrator took the cash and purse and exited the ramp. The couple saw him head southbound on Bloomington Avenue, Stehlik said. The couple described the perpetrator as a black man, 5 feet 8 inches tall, slender, in his mid- to late 20s and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark colored jeans. Items from the woman’s purse were found along Bloomington Avenue, but the purse, a digital camera and vehicle keys were not recovered, Stehlik noted. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Bloomington Police Department at 952-563-8812.

Medicine collection event to be held in Richfield June 23 Hennepin County is providing residents the opportunity to properly and safely dispose of their unwanted, expired and unused medicines at a medicine collection event in Richfield. There is no charge for bringing in medications, but the program is for Hennepin County residents only. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Richfield Ice Arena parking lot, 636 66th St. E. The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office, Hennepin County Environmental Services, and the City of Richfield are sponsoring the medicine collection event. To assure compliance with federal regulations for controlled substances, Hennepin County Sheriff ’s deputies will oversee collection of medications. Directions for residents: Keep medication in the original package so it can be identified. If you don’t have the original container, put the medicine in a clear plastic bag and write the name and dosage of the medicine on the bag if you know it. Do not mix medications. Put all the medications (whether they’re
in original packaging or in clear individual bags containing loose pills) – in a larger clear plastic bag, so you’re dropping off just one package at the collection site. Medications that can be brought include prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements, and pet medications. Medicines will be accepted in any form: ampoules, blister packs, capsules, creams, gels, inhalers, IV bags, liquids, patches, pills, powders, sprays, vials, etc. Some items will not be accepted, such as needles or sharps, medicines from businesses, including health-care facilities, long-term-care facilities, pharmacies, doctors’ offices, pharmaceutical sales representatives or veterinary clinics. Hennepin County held its first medicine collection event last September in St. Louis Park. Nearly 70 people participated. On April 30, the county conducted another medicine collection event in Brooklyn Center, attended by more than 300 people. Info: hennepin.us/medicine or 612-3483777.

Retired Brooklyn Center teacher wins Midwest Book Award BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Zoey Norling, 12, remembers spending hours looking for her grandparents’ cat, Lucy. Whenever Zoey and her sister and cousins went to their grandparents’ house, they would charge toward the cat as soon as they stepped in the door. It would turn tail and run, so the children would always have to look for Lucy. “It was the first thing we always did and the funnest thing we always did,â€? Zoey said. On May 11 in Bloomington, a book that tells the story of the children’s cat hunts won the Midwest Book Award in the children’s picture book category. Zoey’s grandmother Emrys Current of Little Canada published the illustrated children’s book “Looking for Lucyâ€? last spring after months of writing, revising and supervising illustrations. When Current retired as a special education teacher at Brooklyn Center High School in 2002, she hoped to have new experiences, but she never expected to write an award-winning book. At first when she had the idea for the story, she didn’t even intend to publish it. “One day I got to thinking, ‘Gosh, that would make a good story,’â€? Current said. So she wrote it down. Current wrote most of the storyline in one sitting and then revised it every couple months. “My plan really was just to write the book for my grandkids,â€? she said.
Emrys Current, a retired Brooklyn Center High School teacher, shows off her award-winning children’s book “Looking for Lucy. (Submitted photo) Then she read a newspaper article about Beaver’s Pond Press, an Edina-based publishing company started in 1998. Beaver’s Pond is a self-publishing
press that is selective about what books it accepts. In other words, authors pay to publish their own books, but not just anyone can have a book published. Once Beaver’s Pond accepts a book, it provides an editor and other resources to help improve and produce the final product. Current submitted her book, and Beaver’s Pond accepted it. “Looking for Lucyâ€? tells the simple story of children going to their grandma’s house and looking for her cat, Lucy. Each page shows the children in the story looking for Lucy in a different place, and Lucy is always hiding somewhere in the picture for readers to find. “My favorite part is actually finding Lucy in the pictures,â€? Zoey said. Zoey and the other three grandchildren were involved in the process of producing the book and illustrations. “Whenever we’d come over to her house ‌ she showed us most of the pictures in the book,â€? Zoey’s 9year-old sister Ava said. “She’d always ask us to make sure the pictures matched the words and that they reflected how we felt when we were looking for Lucy,â€? Zoey said. The grandchildren had to approve each illustration before Current was satisfied. Current published the book and has sold about 500 BOOK: TO NEXT PAGE

Book FROM PREVIOUS PAGE copies. Her friends and family told her the book was well done. “But they have to say nice things,” Current said. Then Beaver’s Pond selected her book as one of its submissions for the Midwest Book Awards. The Midwest Book Awards draw submissions from 12 states. Amy Quale, managing editor at Beaver’s Pond, knows the competition is tough. “Especially with children’s books, it’s very competitive,” she said. Quale was involved in the selection of “Looking for Lucy” both for publishing and for submission to the awards competition. “The simplicity and elegance of the story and the illustrations really stood out about this book,” she said. “I loved how it became like a game for children to look at the book and to look for Lucy.” When Current heard her book made the finals in the competition, she was thrilled. “To be a finalist was good enough,” she said. “I kept telling myself, ‘I don’t think you’re going to win, but this is really good to be a finalist.’” She didn’t find out that she won until she and her family attended the awards ceremony May 11. Ava remembers the tension and excitement of the evening.
“The competition was hard,” she said. “We thought for sure that the other books would win but … I had a feeling that she would win.” When the announcer called Emrys’ name, the family reacted enthusiastically. “Everybody in our family just jumped up and screamed,” Ava said. Current, who broke her kneecap in November, stood and came forward as quickly as she could. “They called my name and, wouldn’t you know, we were sitting way in the back,” Current said. “I had to hobble up to the stage. I called out, ‘I’m coming. I’m slow — I broke my kneecap.’” For Current, the award validates what her family and friends have told her about the book. “To get this award just convinced me that it was a worthwhile book and that it might have some staying power,” she said. Perhaps winning the award will help the book’s sales, as well. It looks good to place the gold Midwest Book Award sticker on the front cover of a book. That’s been a job for Current’s husband David. “I’ve been busy putting gold stickers on books,” he said. All proceeds from the book support a college fund for Current’s grandchildren, though they are probably still too young to think much about college. For now, they’re simply excited for Grandma. “I’m just so happy that this is what she wanted to do and that she could accomplish it and that we were able to be a part of it,” Zoey said.

ers. Gjestvang stood, not realizing he’d taken shrapnel wounds to both legs and his left arm. He ran to the sponson, a platform protruding from the hangar deck about halfway up the side of the ship. He jumped. Splashing into the Pacific in some of the world’s deepest water, Gjestvang looked up and saw the ship listing away from him. Shipmates were leaping from the flight deck — by now 60 feet or more above the water — and plunging in the sea beside him. He kicked off his shoes and swam away from the ship as fast as he could so it wouldn’t suck him under when it sank. But the worst was still to come. Machinist First Class Conrad Gjestvang of Brooklyn Center was born in Esterville, Iowa, June 21, 1923. He grew up in Watertown, S.D., and the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis. In the spring of 1942 he graduated from the former West High School, and that September he enlisted in the Navy. After boot camp in Idaho, Gjestvang took a train to Kansas where he completed a two-year mechanical engineering course at the University of Kansas in 16 weeks. “Every day you had to go,” Gjestvang said. “You went there all day long.” As a machinist, Gjestvang would be responsible to operate and maintain the main engines of his ship, so he went to Milwaukee to learn how to operate the steam engines that powered carriers. His next stop was the Navy base at Bremerton, Wash., to train on a ship like the one he’d be assigned to. Gjestvang was assigned to a small carrier, the USS Gambier Bay, commissioned Dec. 28, 1943. It was 512 feet long, a dwarf compared to the attack carriers, which often measured more than 800 feet long. The Gambier Bay was a Casablancaclass carrier, or “jeep carrier,” built by the American company Kaiser. The jeep carriers’ unusually light armor also helped earn them the nickname “Kaiser coffins.” But they were intended as escort ships to protect convoys against submarine attacks
and were never supposed to be in large-scale naval battles. But that’s where Gjestvang and the crew of the USS Gambier Bay found themselves Oct. 25, 1944. They were in the thick of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of World War II and perhaps the largest naval battle in history. In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese fleet split into three attack forces. One force approached from the south of Leyte and was destroyed. A decoy fleet, including four aircraft carriers with almost no aircraft on board, drew much of the American fleet away from the northern part of Leyte. That cleared the way for main assault force to advance from the north. “They were going to wipe out the invasion of Leyte,” Gjestvang said. “But we were in the way.” The Gambier Bay was part of a group called “Taffy 3,” one of three light carrier groups with planes supporting General MacArthur’s invasion of Leyte. Leyte was an island in the Philippines considered a strategic position in the American advance toward Japan. Taffy 3 had only three jeep carriers, three cruisers, three destroyers and four destroyer escorts. The Japanese fleet boasted four battleships, eight cruisers and thirteen destroyers. Among the battleships was the Yamato, the largest battleship in the world. “They started shooting at us at 20 miles away,” Gjestvang said. “And then they could go 30 knots, where we could only go about 18 knots. So they kept getting closer and closer, and we kept running … laying smoke screens and everything else.” During the action, Gjestvang performed damage control. “If we had any hits, then we went to go and repair them,” he said. The ship took hit after hit: twentyeight in all, he estimated. Because of the thin armor, many of the heavy artillery rounds pierced one side of the ship and went out the other like a rifle bullet. That saved a lot of lives, Gjestvang said, because there were fewer explosions. But it also made water pour in faster. “One [shell] went down through the SUNK: TO NEXT PAGE

SUNK FROM PREVIOUS PAGE engine room,” Gjestvang said. “It went down and then went out through the bottom, and they had the water coming in from two directions.” Eventually, enemy shells took out both engines, and the ship was dead in the water. Gjestvang was still running hoses over the ship’s side to pump out the water when a shell blast threw him to the ground. Then he heard the order to abandon ship. That order came at 8:50 a.m. By 9:07 the ship had capsized. At 9:11 it sank in the Philippine Trench, one of the deepest parts of the ocean. “Losing your ship is like watching a tornado strike your house,” Gjestvang said. “Everything I had was gone.” After he jumped in the water, Gjestvang swam toward a life raft, but a shell hit the raft and sent it flying in the air. So he swam to another raft. The 20-man raft filled up quickly as the men paddled it around, picking up the wounded. When no more could fit, they tied men to the sides so they
In his Brooklyn Center home May 10, Conrad Gjestvang stands next to an artist’s rendition of his ship, the USS Gambier Bay, under fire. The ship sank Oct. 25, 1944, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The painter, Richard C. Moore, titled the work “Freedom’s Cost.” (Jonathan Young • Sun Newspapers) wouldn’t drift away. On the raft, Gjestvang discovered he was wounded. “I didn’t even know I was hit,” he said. “My leg got numb … I put my hand back there. There was a hole in my pants, and I found a hole in my leg.” He couldn’t do anything about it.
All he could do was wait and hope for rescue. After a while the bottom of the overcrowded raft gave way, and everyone had to “hang on for dear life.” Gjestvang and his shipmates floated two days and nights without food or SUNK: TO PAGE 24A

COMMUNITY NOTES Gov. Carlson speaks on budget impasse May 31 Former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson will speak on the state budget 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at the Southdale Library, 7001 York Ave. S., in Edina. His address “The State Budget Impasse – Where Do We Go from Here?” is free and open to the general public. Carlson served two terms as governor from 1991 to 1999. The session is sponsored by Edina and West Bloomington Democrats. Info: 612-251-7130 (Dana Lappin).
HCT to offer community paramedic program Hennepin Technical College has announced that it is the first institution to offer community paramedic training in response to Gov. Mark Dayton’s signing into law the Community Paramedics Bill,
23A
which creates certification for emergency medical technicians-community paramedics. The course begins in May at the college’s Eden Prairie campus. Community paramedics will help provide health services where access to physicians, clinics or hospitals is difficult or does not exist, particularly in rural Minnesota, where there is a large population of elderly citizens and a critical shortage of health care professionals. Another benefit of the expanded role of community paramedics is their preparation to monitor and provide some treatment to patients with chronic diseases and perform minor medical procedures in the patient’s home. Experienced paramedics who enroll in the program will complete 96 hours of classroom training at the college’s Eden Prairie campus, as well as 196 hours of clinical training at various Twin Cities hospitals. Info: 952-995-1313.

SUNK FROM PAGE 15A water or medical supplies. “I don’t know how many miles we drifted, but we were thirty miles away from where they thought we were,” he said. On the first day of drifting, a Japanese destroyer passed nearby and scared the men. “I thought they were going to shoot us, but they didn’t,” Gjestvang said. “They were just kind of waving to us. Respect, you know.” The crew’s only other company was sharks, which attacked many of the men. “Sharks got a lot of our guys,” Gjestvang said. “They could smell that blood in the water.” Others who weren’t taken by sharks died when they drank the salty ocean water. The second day, the raft hit an oil slick from a damaged
ship, and a black film coated men and raft as they drifted through it. But there was no sign of ship or shore. “You just hoped somebody would see you,” Gjestvang said. That night someone on the raft saw a light and shot off the last star shell, or flare. A patrol saw it. Finally help arrived. Strong hands pulled Gjestvang and his shipmates from the water. Sometimes the rescuers had to put ropes around the shoulders of the men and hoist them up. “You’re so weak, you’re like a wet rag,” Gjestvang said. “You can’t hardly help yourself.” Had he stayed in the water another day, Gjestvang believes he would have joined the estimated 280 casualties. The Battle of Leyte Gulf ended as an American victory. The Japanese attack force that sank the Gambier Bay mysteriously turned around and stopped pressing the attack. “Nobody really knows why,” Gjestvang said. “They could’ve

kept coming and done three times more damage than they did.” After his rescue, Gjestvang was shipped back home and received 30 days leave before being redeployed on a brand new carrier, the USS Vella Gulf. He received the Purple Heart, one of the nation’s highest military honors, in 1944 and was honorably discharged from the service in March 1946. After leaving the military, Gjestvang had a career as a railroad engineer and raised a family of three children. He has seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. This year he is celebrating 60 years of living in his Brooklyn Center home and 63 years of marriage to his wife, Betty. Eighty-seven-year-old Gjestvang says he wouldn’t want to relive those two days in the water. But he still travels the country for reunions of his shipmates. Even though the number of people at the reunions has dwindled, there is still a strong bond among the crew of the USS Gambier Bay.

Permit FROM PAGE 1A going to go on there.” She expects that traffic and parking demands of the community center will affect her neighborhood. “I am very angry about it,” she said. The community center is intended to be a place of assembly that that will include a day care facility and a primary school, as well as a community center for athletic activities on evenings and weekends. The site was formerly a Lutheran high school and had been used as a place for religious assembly. The proposed use for the community center includes prayer services for the Muslim community. The council granted Al Farooq a conditional-use permit May 2, after debating how parking would be accommodated for its proposed uses. The council revisited those discussions in response to concerns Ness raised during last week’s meeting. Ness, who had previously expressed concerns to city officials through
email, questioned if the city should have been more proactive in purchasing the building or assisting the school district in purchasing the building since the athletic amenities and parking had been developed jointly by the city and the school’s ownership. The city’s Smith Park is adjacent to the school property, and there is an agreement for the shared use and maintenance of parking and athletic fields and courts at the site, according to acting Planning Manager Glen Markegard. The agreements continue through 2024, and can be extended for 10 years. The agreements will remain in place under the new ownership of the building, Markegard said. “The city has access to these fields,” he said. The city did have an option to purchase the athletic fields when the building was being offered for sale, but didn’t consider purchasing the school building, City Manager Mark Bernhardson said. Because of the agreements governing the shared space, “it did not make sense for us to buy it,” he said. Mayor Gene Winstead noted that the school district had also considered buying the building it once used as an elementary school, but rehabilitation
costs made the acquisition cost prohibitive. The purchase agreement that was executed included negotiated upgrades, he noted. Ness has researched the group purchasing the building and the group’s proposed uses of it. “It’s a good group of people,” she told the council. The community center will serve a Muslim group representing many nationalities, but she was concerned that uses of the building on evenings and weekends for prayer purposes or gatherings, such as a wedding or funeral, will create a regular source of traffic through the neighborhood, more so than would be generated by a school or church. “You needed to find out more about who was purchasing it,” she said. Winstead said that the council was concerned about how the building would be used, noting conditions were placed on the community center’s permit dictating how space within the building could be used. In addition the council included provisions for additional parking before and after the building opened as a community center. It is the responsibility of both the building’s operators and the city to ensure uses of the building do not exceed what has been granted by the
25A
city, Winstead noted. The building contains a large gymnasium, classrooms and other gathering space, including a smaller gymnasium. The parking requirements for the building are determined by the size and purpose of the space within the building, and restrictions were placed on the permit limiting how many areas could be used at any one time, Markegard explained. When the building is being used for school and day care purposes, the large gymnasium couldn’t be used for any purpose that would generate additional traffic, he said. It would be available for use by students in the school and day care program, he noted. After reviewing the approval and addressing concerns raised by Ness, Winstead asked the council if it was interested in reconsidering the conditional-use permit. “I don’t think there’s a basis for it,” Council member Vern Wilcox said. Council member Tom Hulting noted that it would take a majority of the council to agree to reconsider the matter. He doubted the council had two members willing to reconsider it. And he was right. No council member offered a motion to reconsider the matter.

PUBLIC SAFETY Bloomington police officer receives award A Bloomington police officer that works with a K-9 partner was honored recently as the Bloomington Optimist Club’s Bloomington Police Officer of the Year. During the club’s annual “Respect for Law” dinner May 12, Officer Joe Spark and his K-9 partner Bosco were presented with the award. Spark has been with the Bloomington Police Department since 2004 and was recently recognized by the United States Police Canine Association for their Case of the Quarter Award. The case involved an attempted burglary where Bloomington police apprehended two suspects, one of whom informed offi-
custody. Officers searched the area but could not locate the gun. After 15 hours had elapsed, Spark and Bosco conducted an article search of the area and located the gun. “Officer Spark is an active leader in the south metro K-9 training group where he is involved in setting up and participating in training with other handlers in the area,” said Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts.
“He has logged 212 hours of training over 68 training sessions for the year and had 160 total K-9 uses for the year, including everything from apprehension to demonstrations.” Potts noted that Spark led the department with 53 DWI arrests in 2010. “Spark is a consistent hard worker who led by example and is a worthy recipient of being chosen 2011 Officer of the Year.”

receive $150,000 to develop comprehensive strategies to improve literacy at specific school sites, with a focus on the developmental span from pre-kindergarten through third grade. Following one planning year, McKnight will review each school district again for a possible implementation grant to put the plans into motion. Bloomington’s participating schools are Washburn and Valley View elementary schools. McKnight cited Bloomington as a frontrunner of Minnesota school districts using technology to encourage teachers and families to monitor student data and to develop connections to community resources that are committed to academic success. The McKnight Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for present and future generations through grants, coalition building and encouragement of strategic policy reform. Reiners provides golden scoring touch for No. 3 Kennedy
Hat trick effort Reiners displayed her offensive skill in Kennedy’s final game of the regular season by scoring three goals and adding one assist in Kennedy’s 10-8 triumph over Apple Valley.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Kennedy senior Sheridan Reiners has never had difficulty scoring in soccer, basketball or lacrosse. Reiners was one of the leading scorers as a forward on the Bloomington Thunder Under-17 soccer club team that trains and plays in tournaments yearround. Last winter, Reiners averaged 12 points a game as a point guard for the Kennedy basketball team. This spring she has been nearly unstoppable as a midfielder on Kennedy’s third-ranked and unbeaten lacrosse squad. Reiners scored a state-leading 57 goals during the regular season as Kennedy went 13-0. She also added five assists for 62 points. Reiners will try to add to her point total in the Section 3 playoffs that started this week. Kennedy is the top seed. “I have always been able to score goals in lacrosse,” said Reiners. “Last spring I was one of the top five scorers in the state. “This is my fifth year on the varsity lacrosse team and I enjoy the sport.” Reiners is hoping to end her prep lacrosse career by winning a state championship. That title pursuit began May 25 for the Eagles, who were scheduled to play Lakeville South or Owatonna in the section quarterfinals. The winner advances to the semifinals of the 15-team Section 3 tourney Tuesday, May 31, at the site of the highest seed. Championship game is Thursday, June 2, at the site of the highest seed. Bloomington Jefferson is the fourth seed and met Farmington in a first-round game May 23. Winner of that game played Burnsville or Prior Lake May 25 in the quarterfinals.

Nick Nielsen The Bloomington Jefferson golfer shared medalist honors with Josh Littman of Holy Angels in the Bloomington Invitational May 13 at Dwan Golf Club. Nielsen and Littman shot par 68s in the 18-hole tourney. Jefferson was team champion. Nielsen was also medalist with a 70 in the Chaska Invite at Chaska Town Course May 16.
Sheridan Reiners The Kennedy girls lacrosse player leads the state in goals with 54. Reiners has four assists and 58 points heading into the final week of the regular season. The Eagles are ranked third in the state.
Andrew Erickson Erickson scored two goals as the Kennedy boys lacrosse team lost 10-8 to Lakeville South. He also scored one goal in a 6-4 victory over Minneapolis Southwest.
Elizabeth Wittenborg Bloomington Kennedy senior midfielder Sheridan Reiners (16) looks for an opening in the Apple Valley defense during the Kennedy lacrosse team’s 10-8 triumph May 17. The Eagles finished the regular season 13-0. Reiners leads the state with 57 goals. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer) Leah Gefroh also had a hat trick for the winners. Victoria Dubose-Briski scored twice. Hanna Crook and Brianna Dubose-Briski chipped in with one goal each. Eagle goalie Sarah Hochman finished with eight saves. This has been an eventful and successful senior year for Reiners. She received the school’s Athena Award, given to the top senior female athlete based on athletic and academic accomplishments. Reiners earned 13 varsity letters, five each in lacrosse and basketball and three in soccer. She finished with six allconference, two all-section and two AllState awards.
This could be Reiners’ last competitive lacrosse season because she has accepted a soccer scholarship from the University of Minnesota. “I always wanted to stay close to home to attend college,” said Reiners. “The soccer scholarship offer from the Gophers was the best I received. “So, I get a chance to play college soccer and get a really good education at Minnesota.” But Reiners has unfinished business to complete before her high school athletic career concludes. A state lacrosse championship would be a perfect ending to what has already been a prolific prep sports career.
Wittenborg had four goals and one assist as the Jefferson girls lacrosse team defeated Chaska 12-9 in overtime May 9.
Laura Falkanger The Jefferson softball pitcher allowed four hits and struck out six in six innings as the Jaguars defeated No. 1-ranked North St. Paul 4-2 May 13. She was also the winning pitcher as Jefferson beat Apple Valley 10-2 May 9.
Labrishia Michael The Kennedy girls track and field athlete won the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 9 inches at the Class 3A, Section 3 True Team meet May 10 at Apple Valley High School.
