BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS L e n O l s o n was looking for a way to help attract visitors to his Sage Technology Group booth during the Minnesota Government IT Symposium Dec. 7-9 at the RiverCentre in St. Paul.

But in locking down what he hopes is a lively attraction, he also decided it was just too good of a thing to use only at a booth attraction.

“We wanted to do a little more, and share this with some kids,” said Olson, the president and CEO of the Bloomington-based Sage Technology Group.

Olson has hired the celebrity robot Gemo for the day. Known most for his role in the fourth installment of the Rocky series – a gift from the Balboas to Paulie for those who don’t remember – Gemo has also made appearances on the MTV series “Punk’d,” as well as “Days of Our Lives” and “The Family Guy.” On Wednesday, Dec. 8, Gemo will be in town to help work the Sage booth at the IT Symposium, but prior to that, Olson is taking the interactive robot to Clover Ridge Elementary School in Chaska for the morning to give students the opportunity to see what he can do.

Bloomington Police arrested the woman at approximately 1 a.m. Nov. 22 after a report of a possible domestic incident at a residence on the 10500 block of Ewing Road, according to Bloomington Police Commander Kevin Herman.

The woman had fled the residence prior to an officer’s arrival but was found hiding behind a garbage receptacle at the nearby strip mall. The woman refused to cooperate with the officer’s commands to come out from behind the receptacle and turned violent upon being confronted by the officer.

The woman attempted to hit the officer as he attempted to arrest her, and she refused to cooperate as she was being handcuffed, Herman said. She smelled of alcohol and was found to be in possession of a marijuana pipe, he noted.

Stolen vehicle pursuit A short chase through Bloomington ended when the driver of a stolen Ford Mustang lost control on an entrance ramp, crashing the vehicle into a tree.

The 29-year-old Bloomington man was arrested shortly after 2:30 a.m. Nov. 19 when he lost control of the vehicle on the entrance ramp to eastbound Interstate 494, Herman said.

Rice County officials alerted Bloomington Police about the vehicle, which is registered to a Lonsdale resident. It was spotted by Burnsville Police traveling northbound on Interstate 35W and was being followed, but a traffic stop had not been attempted to that point.

As the vehicle entered Bloomington a patrol officer joined the pursuit at 106th Street and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, with additional officers standing by in case a high-risk stop would be necessary, Herman explained.

Instead of pulling over, the driver exited at 90th Street, only to drive through a red light at the intersection

and continue northbound on the interstate, Herman said. The pursuit topped out near 100 mph, he noted.

The driver lost control of the vehicle on the exit ramp to 494, spinning out into a ditch, sliding on the snow-covered grass and crashing into a tree. The man was arrested for vehicle theft, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and an outstanding warrant for fleeing police, Herman said.

Harassment arrests A 71-year-old Bloomington man was arrested twice for incidents involving his ex-wife.

The man was arrested Nov. 19 after a call from a resident on the 1400 block of East 98th Street. A woman reported that her ex-husband was pounding on the door of her residence, trying to get in. The officer who responded to the call found the man inside the house.

Upon questioning by the officer, he was found to be in possession of a machete, and was subsequently arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, making verbal threats and stalking.

An order for protection was issued against the man, who was arrested three days later for violating the order after he was reported to be pounding

on a window at the residence. The man left before police arrived, but was identified as a passenger in a taxi and arrested near the intersection of East 89th Street and Old Cedar Avenue, Herman said.

Theft arrests A 50-year-old Bloomington woman was arrested for felony theft after it was determined she was taking cash from her register while working at the Bloomington Target store.

The woman was arrested Nov. 23 following an internal investigation by store management, according to Herman. The store collected evidence showing that she stole $745 from her register during three incidents over a weekand-a-half period. The woman is facing a felony theft count because of a prior felony theft conviction, Herman noted.

A 52-year-old St. Paul man was arrested Nov. 22 after attempting to steal $1,300 worth of tools from the Bloomington Home Depot.

The store’s loss prevention team observed the man pushing a shopping cart through the store with empty shopping bags inside it. He put tools in the bags and push the cart out into the parking lot, never stopping to pay for the tools, Herman said.

Police were called to Normandale Chiropractic, 10607 France Ave. S., Nov. 21. A contractor who was there to do work inside the office alerted the business owner to the burglary. A cash box was missing from inside a file cabinet, as well as a toolbox and cordless drill.

There was no sign of forced entry into the office, Herman noted.

Cash and a laptop computer were stolen from a UPS Store during the same weekend.

The burglary, at 541 98th St. W., was reported Nov. 22. There was no sign of forced entry into the gated area of the store, which separates the office from mailboxes that customers have access to after hours, Herman said.

Nothing was reported missing, but an apartment bedroom was ransacked Nov. 20.

The resident left for work in the morning and returned at approximately 6 p.m. to find that her apartment, on the 1600 block of 80th Street East, had been burglarized. Access to the apartment was gained by cutting a bedroom window screen and sliding the window open, Herman said.

Dozens of book sales scheduled at libraries in Hennepin County

BY MUNA HASSAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Best sellers, cook books, science fiction, teen and children’s books are just some of the genres that will be available for the public to buy for $2 or less at library book sales throughout Hennepin county.

Library Friends Groups throughout Hennepin County will have book sales occurring with thousands of books on sale at each Hennepin County library.

Seven book sales are remaining this year, with more scheduled through October 2011.

Some participating libraries include Oxboro Library and Penn Lake Library in Bloomington, Eden Prairie Library,

Ridgedale Library in Minnetonka, Hopkins Library, Maple Grove Library, and Augsburg Park Library in Richfield.

About half the books on sale come from donations from the community while the other half come from overstock at the library.

All the proceeds of the book sales go to the library, but that is not the only reason for the sales.

“It’s a two-fold,” said Allen Maffit of Oxboro Library in Bloomington, “The first is to make money, but it’s also about putting books in the hands of the community.”

The book sales are run by volunteers from the Library Friends Group of the

“Nothing escapes,” said Maffit.

“Everything is taken home.”

While the public can rent books from the library on a regular basis, the book sales allow people to own the books they really want, which, to some, is the most important part of the sales.

“The best part is watching people come in and score the books they want to own,” said Maffit.

Ken Parker’s ‘Heaven Rejoices’ on stage Dec. 10-12 in Burnsville

BY JENNIE OLSON • SUN NEWSPAPERS How do you creatively tell a story that’s been repeated for more than 2,000 years?

For Ken Parker, Executive Director of Christian Arts Ministries in Bloomington, it’s all about perspective.

Berean Baptist Church in Burnsville and his group are combining talents to perform “Heaven Rejoices,” an original Christmas musical written by Parker and hosted at Berean Baptist.

“Churches year after year are looking for a way to retell the story of the nativity and incarnation,” Parker said. “This musical is very unique in the fact that it’s all done from the angels’ points of view.”

The musical begins before the world was created with the angels overhearing God the Father discussing how he’s going to create a universe. They are astounded about his plans and the revelation that there will be other created beings. The story journeys from before the world was created until the nativity.

“We have about 90 voices in the choir and wonderful, skilled actors, actresses and dancers. It’s a remarkable assemblage of people,” Parker said.

Choir members and dancers from Berean and Parker’s ministry will be dressed as the angels and will be accompanied by a professional orchestra. The music is an array of many musical genres, including contemporary, jazz, Broadway, gospel, ballads, Spanish, calypso and classic.

“When I say classic, I don’t mean classical,” Parker added. “I mean that it’s the wonderful, rich, lush sounds of big orchestras and tight choral singing. It’s

that classic American sound that has been with us since the 1920s.”

“He’s one of the great orchestrators in America and has done some phenomenal stuff. It’s all beautiful writing in this musical,” Parker said.

Parker has been involved in local church ministry for more than 45 years as a pastor, worship leader and dramatist.

He founded Christian Arts Ministries after leaving a post at Grace Church in Eden Prairie to create original productions that allow Christians to use their talents to communicate the gospel.

He joined the Berean Baptist staff in March after the former minister of music was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer able to continue his duties as director. Originally, Parker was intending to stay for a month, but the church asked if he would be able to stay for an additional year, which he accepted. Parker asked Berean if the church would consider doing a combined Christmas production with his ministry rather than having two separate productions.

“I love the people,” Parker said of Berean Baptist. “They’re just delightful, and I’m having a good time.”

Research shows that children who have developed six basic pre-reading skills begin school more ready to learn.

Children need to know the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes, be able to rhyme and hear smaller parts of words, know how to handle a book, know what words mean and know how to use words to describe or tell a story. These skills are needed before children can learn to read.

Does it sound like a lot? In a way, children do have a lot of work to do, but it most often looks like playing. There are many ways for parents to help children grow into readers, but reading together every day is a joyful, necessary and easy way to help children develop these skills. The early literacy years aren’t about drills and flashcards – they’re about exposing children to language and allowing them the space and time to get comfortable, develop their own expertise, and most of all, have fun.

As parents and caregivers, you are your child’s first teacher. Reading together, singing and chanting nursery rhymes all contribute to literacy skills. Start doing these together from the moment your child is born.

Hassles aside, it’s serenity, for now Those who have watched “Seinfeld” half as many times as I have are sure to remember “The Serenity Now” episode.

It was aired originally more than 13 years ago and is titled after the saying characters use as a rage-controlling exercise. “Serenity now” is adopted by “hipster doofus” Cosmo Kramer, who hits his breaking point at the end of the episode. His fury is unleashed upon several unopened computers he is temporarily warehousing in his apartment on behalf of his friend George Costanza, who ordered them to temporarily pad his sales total.

I found myself saying “serenity now” more than once the past few weeks, and as my co-workers can attest, I was on the verge of a meltdown one Thursday night not so long ago.

I’m happy to report that the meltdown was averted.

No Sun Newspapers computers were harmed, as tempting as it may have been to throw one through a window.

My recent lapse of serenity was fueled by the death of my work computer. I did something unusual for me – triggering a cataclysmic chain of events – I turned it off the previous night.

Normally I leave the computer on, restarting it every few days to give it that fresh start I’m told it periodically needs. Uncharacteristically I shut the computer off before leaving on Wednesday evening. I didn’t return to the office until Thursday night, having spent the day out and about.

I came into the office to catch up on e-mail, which I get too much of, and spent three hours doing about 30 minutes worth of work. That’s because my computer wouldn’t work. It appeared that it wanted to work, but somehow the connection between the hard drive and the monitor wasn’t allowing me to do my thing. That problem has yet to be solved.

Without my usual computer, I no longer had access to a variety of files I rely upon each week. Reclaiming them is not impossible, and it’s frustrating.

I also lost access to several Internet bookmarks I had. Online tools and several sites I rely upon for assembling the community highlights calendar were no longer accessible at the click of the mouse. I can find most of them again, but the exercise of rebuilding my arsenal is less than pleasing.

These setbacks were far less troubling than what happened next. The laptop was connected to my e-mail account so I could have access to the hundreds of e-mail messages I hang onto as if they’re invaluable to my job. I delete a batch of old messages periodically, but there’s a certain comfort in having e-mail communication from the past several months available at the push of a few buttons.

My faith in technology was again tested when I logged into the e-mail system via the laptop computer a day or two later and found that all but the most recent messages were gone. Email tips I was holding onto for future reference are history, as are a few announcements submitted on behalf of churches or other organizations for upcoming events.

I have never lost a photo album in a fire, but I think I can empathize with those who have.

Some day soon I’m going to receive an inquiry as to why I chose not to use information about a given community event in our papers. This time I get to blame it on technology instead of my failure to properly organize and disseminate dozens of weekly e-mail submissions and inquiries.

The recent setbacks gave me pause to reflect upon a simpler time, – say 13 years ago – when I wasn’t at the mercy of e-mail.

Thanks to computers and the Internet I can work at home, plug into the office remotely and file stories, news briefs or photo cutlines at my convenience rather than wait until I’m sitting at my designated desk. But the dependence upon a working computer for so many aspects of our lives and the inability to do anything meaningful for the newspaper without it were painfully obvious to me.

My computer setbacks were far from crippling, yet they threatened my sense of serenity.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dual-flush toilet device a hit with homeowner To the editor: The article in Nov. 18 Sun-Current regarding water rates prompts me to write with a money saving tip.

I’m pretty good at saving water. At our lake place up north we have a well, but I need to carry my water in gallon jugs and heat it in the microwave or on

the stove for dishwashing, so I’m very good at conserving.

Here in Bloomington we recently installed one of the new dual-flush toilet devices. I was skeptical about how well it would work but I have been very pleased; less water used and less wastewater, too, so it is a win-win. These devices are relatively inexpensive and I’m sure will save us money on our water bill.

Recent storm has me dreaming of anything but a white Christmas For the second time in less than 12 months Mother Nature delivered me a shot below the belt.

Last December it was the ice storm/blizzard that hammered Minnesota on Christmas Eve. That storm left me stranded in the Twin Cities – 200 miles away from my family.

With it being Christmas and all, my friends were also unreachable, so I spent my first Christmas alone in 31 years.

Last week it was the combination or rain, snow and overly cautious drivers that left me without a family Thanksgiving for the first time.

I wasn’t worried about the roads – they weren’t that bad. However, I must have been the only one who showed no concern for traveling the day before the holiday.

I started west on Highway 12 at 1:30 p.m. By 3:30 p.m. I had made it approximately 50 miles, with much of that coming in the final hour.

I hit my brakes several times in that first hour just to see how bad the roads really were and why it justified driving 30 mph. No sliding, no skidding, yet still little or no moving.

In hour No. 2 the traffic began to thin out and it appeared I might actually make it home for the holiday.

That’s when Mother Nature intervened.

The snow changed briefly to rain and then back to snow, meaning the temperature rose and dropped just enough to coat the roads with water that could freeze and make my journey difficult if not impossible.

I made the decision to turn around and not brave the elements – much to the dismay of my mother.

Returning home, I ventured to a grocery store and picked up everything I needed for a Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, potatoes, gravy and even vegetables, which I don’t like or typically eat.

I extended invitations to my friends that I knew had to be back for work on Friday morning. One of those friends actually accepted the invitation, even though he knew I’d be cooking.

Dinner went off without a major hitch. Only minor ones like forgetting what time I put the turkey in the oven, which caused overcooking.

Nobody got sick and, much like I would have back home, I got to take a much-needed nap.

It wasn’t until after my nap that I truly realized the extent of what Mother Nature had done to me.

I looked at my kitchen and immediately missed my mother, grandmother and aunts as the pile of dishes stared back at me. Petty, I know.

A few days later, many of them are still sitting on my countertop, waiting for their turn in the dishwasher.

I now have a newfound appreciation for the work that it takes to put on a holiday dinner and hope that Mother Nature is now satisfied that I’ve learned something and will give me a dry, brown Christmas so I don’t have to do this much work for a meal ever again.

As I drowsily drove through the sleepy streets of Osseo this morning on the way to my workplace’s home offices, I noticed a wooden sign I’d never seen before.

It hung above a barbershop, and read “Osseo’s Original Man Cave.”

Really, gentlemen – when did we get relegated to the basement or the garage?

In the interests of full disclosure, I had a man cave of my own once. It was called “Das Herrenzimmer” (“The Man Room” in German) and was a depository for all of the stuff that I thought was cool but was obviously not sane enough to display in parts of the house where other people might actually see it. I had my military collections, my models, vinyl records, my old Star Wars toys and my weight equipment.

I would have stored my motorcycle down there, but I couldn’t figure out how to get it down the stairs without killing myself in the process. Besides, the exhaust would have likely not gone down well in the house, considering my wife and daughter have asthma. These are the sacrifices I make.

In short, the Herrenzimmer was where I hid all of the lesser-polished parts of myself. It was a toy room for a man that refused to let everything go and emerge as a respectable adult from his youth cocoon. My wife decorates with tasteful furniture. I decorate with tasteful action figures marked “Copyright 1981 Lucasfilm Ltd.” I’m apparently not alone in this. My wife watches all sorts of house-related programming (ironic, seeing as she hates the burden of the house we actually own), and I seem to recall the standard exchange. The wife, looking at houses with the obviously-less-puttogether husband she somehow nurses

through daily life, looks at a room in the basement and says, “This would make a great man room. You could put all your (choose from the following: toys, sports crap, weights, video games, etc.) in here!”

The man, knowing that he really has no say in the matter, smiles painfully and gulps. Deep down, a little voice asks a painful question: “What happened to you?”

I don’t recall my father having a man cave. He had the whole house. Where did this concept come from?

I think I have the answer. In the past generation, societal roles changed. More women earned college degrees than men, and are thus empowered to a somewhat equal or even superior role in terms of being the provider for the relationship. In response, women have had a greater stake and say in how things are – and the men get to keep their crap in the basement as a result.

These changes led directly to the development of the “man cave” concept.

The term seems to indicate not only the view that men are basically primitives who need to be primitive (could be true), but also seems a pathetic last gasp of the testosterone of males (like myself) who are in the place in life where self-respecting manhood is most imperiled – you know, the balding, buying a minivan, “Which drapes look better, honey?” phase.

It’s just a theory, but it makes sense to me. But keeping my Star Wars toys in the basement? That still makes no sense to me. The world needs to see those.

Thanksgiving proves culture is the hitchhiker of immigration Born in the capital city of Dhaka, I know a thing or two about being Bengali … that is, of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is, irrefutably, the pathetic little brother and eastern neighbor of India. And truth is, I can’t deny that; Bangladesh is truly pathetic.

Since its secession from Pakistan in 1971, it has been riddled with poverty, political disaster and religious turmoil during all forty-or-so years of its meager existence. My family migrated to America in 1994 for obvious reasons.

Having moved to America when I was less than a year old, I remembered nothing of my homeland besides what I could glean from photographs and home video. During a prolonged summer trip there in 2007, which was also our first time back since 1994, I was able to retouch the roots of my native culture.

Although I spoke Bengali, ate Bengali foods and attended Bengali get-togethers back “home.” I recognizing the inglorious land from which I came was a bit of a shock. Well, by then a thoroughly spoiled American adolescent, a big shock. Nonetheless, I happily embrace my nativity.

America is a country of immigrants. It has been described as a melting pot, patchwork quilt and even a tossed salad by my seventh-grade social studies teacher. I am living proof of your heterogeneous-mixture-ofchoice.

ing close to 50 people. At these potlucks, you won’t typically find the characteristic glazed turkey or the picturesque, autumn-themed table ornamentation. Instead, you’ll find platters of bhaji, chicken and beef curry, korma, jasmine rice and kebabs. A few years ago, I remember there being turkey, but nothing you’d recognize as American (or edible, for that matter).

Despite differences in cuisine, a Bengali Thanksgiving and an American Thanksgiving have one thing in common: thanks-giving. It’s a notoriously warm-hearted time for friends and family to get together and take pleasure in one another’s company.

Considering that for some people, “Thanksgiving” is synonymous with “Black Friday,” it is striking how out of touch we can become with our own kin or even our own friends. For those who participate, Thanksgiving in Minnesota compounds the effect; people can’t escape the warmth of indoors.

Even though this Turkey Day was another turkeyless one, it’s significance remains great. I’m sure Thanksgiving means a great deal to immigrants, because it does to this Bengali. I thoroughly enjoyed the korma.

Mary Beth Carlson still pouring heart and soul into her music

BY KYLE LUND • CONTRIBUTING WRITER “There is a story behind every song that I write and usually behind every song that I arrange that is very intimately significant to me,” said Mary Beth Carlson. “This whole journey really framed us and a purpose for me in writing songs.”

Carlson’s inspiration for her latest compact disc, “Smile with a Song in Your Heart,” is her daughter’s battle with cerebral palsy and autism.

Recently, growing side effects have profoundly challenged Carlson and her family.

“I started writing songs that had themes of peace and the need for restoration for the calm in our home that had always been there” said Carlson, who will perform Friday, Dec. 10 in Bloomington.

As the severity of her daughter’s illness appeared to stabilized, Carlson says her writing progressed into songs about hope.

“The doctors, with a diagnosis of psychosis and schizophrenia told us there was no cure, and therefore no

hope. Does a parent just accept that? Absolutely not. So we continue to hang on to the joy. It’s our reality. That’s where the CD came from,” she said.

The Minnesota pianist, composer and Mary Beth Carlson arranger has released 19 CD’s of spiritually pianobased music over the years.

“More than the objective of writing and performing music to help myself, I do truly play music for the healing process in other people,” Carlson said.

“Sometimes music is the language that can really speak to the heart and puts that peace that give’s people what they need at a certain point in time.”

Fellow musician and long-time collaborator Diane Tremaine says Carlson “is a delight to work with. I have the greatest respect for her.”

The cellist has played with artists ranging from Prince to Elton John and The Minnesota Orchestra. She will perfor m with Carlson in Bloomington.

“Mary Beth is the same, on-stage, off or wherever. I’m never wondering anything with her. In this business that is very refreshing. She is the real deal,” said Tremaine.

World-class guitar player Billy McLaughlin was a guest artist on Carlson’s latest CD. The two solo performers met years ago at a benefit and finally had a chance to work together.

“She believes in the magic of music.

It’s funny she told me just to come in [to the studio] and the magic would happen, and she was right. She was happy with what I played,” McLaughlin said.

“Supportive listeners” is the term Carlson uses for her fans, the word “fan” itself is a bit of a turn-off.

“Everybody understands what that word is. To me it doesn’t feel as friendly.

‘Supportive listener’ feels like the kind of listeners who respond to me with emails, phone calls and their letters. It says what I mean, a reflection of how I feel about the people appreciating the music we’ve shared for years and years,” said Carlson.

Reusable bottle program successful in Three Rivers Park District

The Three Rivers Park District parks sold 10,374 reusable bottles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day in 2010 as part of a pilot program to phase out the sales of beverages in disposable plastic containers. (Photo courtesy of Three Rivers Park District)

This spring, the Three Rivers Parks Board approved a pilot program to phase out the sales of beverages in disposable plastic containers at Park District facilities by summer 2010.

Three Rivers developed a stafftraining program, purchased reusable bottles and created public education materials in time to launch the pilot program on Memorial Day weekend.

Implementation of the pilot program required support from throughout the organization. A key component of the program was education for park staff and the public.

Collectively, the parks sold 10,374 reusable bottles from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Baker National Golf Course and Hyland Visitor Center sold the most reusable bottles at 3,257 and 2,352, respectively.

The reusable bottle option was successful in reducing the number of disposable plastic bottles sold, according to the Three Rivers Park District. Thus eliminating a portion

of the Park District’s waste stream, which was the objective of the pilot program.

A comparison of sales data for water in disposable plastic bottles indicates a 48 percent reduction in 2010 from the previous summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day).

Overall, the pilot program was “well-received” by park guests, Three Rivers Park District stated. A survey conducted by Park District research staff indicated that 83 percent of respondents agreed with the statement “Three Rivers should encourage the use of reusable water bottles.” Maintenance staff has confirmed that the reusable bottles were not being tossed in park waste receptacles.

Supervisors and managers in the park system attributed much of the success of the program to the seasonal staff for promoting and explaining the reusable bottle option.

With Board support, staff proposes to continue the reusable bottle program in 2011.

Father’s death inspires daughter to fight pancreatic cancer

BY SETH ROWE • SUN NEWSPAPERS Carley Bruntjen messaged so many people about her fundraiser for research into pancreatic cancer that Facebook blocked her account.

Bruntjen held a benefit Nov. 20 in honor of the memory of her father, John Bruntjen. He died of pancreatic cancer in November 2006 during her senior year at Wayzata High School in Plymouth.

“Losing my father at such a young age was and always will be the hardest thing I will go through in life, but it has also motivated me to do whatever I can to raise awareness and prevent other families from having to go through what my family and I have,” Bruntjen said.

Her efforts brought in nearly $16,000, before expenses, during a gala at the Lafayette Club in Minnetonka Beach.

About 100 people attended on an icy evening. The shindig included live local music by The David K Band, a live and silent auction and a sit-down dinner. Proceeds will go toward to Johns Hopkins, which operates the Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center in Maryland.

Bruntjen has also sought to raise awareness of the disease through proclamations and resolutions by the cities of Plymouth, Wayzata and Excelsior. The cities recognized November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, a designation created by The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Of the 10 most common forms of fatal cancer, pancreatic cancer is the only one with a survival rate after five years of contracting the disease in the single digits,

according to the network. The rate has not improved in nearly 40 years. The network suggests people contact members of Congress to support a bill called the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act, share stories and wear purple items to raise awareness.

Plymouth’s proclamation notes the network’s statistics and calls on citizens and lawmakers to help advance research, support patients and create hope.

Wayzata’s resolution states that in 2010 approximately 43,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and nearly 37,000 are expected to die from the disease.

Seventy-five percent of patients die within the first year of their diagnosis. The resolution also states that pancreatic cancer makes up only 2 percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding, “a figure far too low given the severity of the disease, its mortality rate, and how little is known about how to arrest it.”

Bruntjen this summer began her fundraising efforts by selling hot dogs and burgers at a Plymouth Holiday gas station. Over two days, she raised $1,200. She came up with the motto “Help the silent killer be heard” to help promote awareness.

Bruntjen said she was very close to her father and that her work is helping her process his death.

“I was only 17 when he passed me away,” she noted. “I was kind of in a daze for awhile, you know? The shock comes first. You don’t really think about the actual outcome.”

Over time, she said the experience has made her stronger.

“I can’t bring him back, so I might as well do something positive because it helps the grieving process,” she said.

She sought to contact everyone from Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple and a pancreatic cancer survivor, to Oprah, and sent out hundreds of invitations. A surgeon from Johns Hopkins agreed to speak at her Nov. 20 fundraiser.

“My mom says I took on a 60-person project on my own,” she said of the work she put into the fundraiser.

Bruntjen hopes to eventually open her own foundation and make the gala an annual event in her father’s name. She hopes to convince more cities in Minnesota to declare proclamations bringing awareness to pancreatic cancer. Plymouth’s recommends concerned individuals visit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s website, knowitfightitendit.org.

Despite the low survival rate, Bruntjen said federal government funding for further research into pancreatic cancer is lacking. She hopes her local work will help to change that.

“I think there’s not a lot of people asking for it because it’s not well known,” Bruntjen said.

“Nowadays, I look at obituaries and see a lot of pancreatic cancer. If it hadn’t affected my family, I’d have no idea what pancreatic cancer was.

Researchers are seeking to find better screening techniques and improve the quality of life of diagnosed patients.

“I think what we need to work on the most is advocacy,” Bruntjen said. “One day maybe purple will be everywhere.”

Eagan resident spends week in isolation to fight cancer

BY MUNA HASSAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Voluntarily becoming radioactive and staying alone in a lead-lined room for a week was an easy choice for one Eagan resident.

Matt Thuente, 24, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer typically found in children, in August 2009. He went through multiple treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, but neither helped rid him of the cancer. Matt was in pain and was confined to a wheelchair as the disease progressed.

So when Matt’s oncologist at the University of Minnesota told him about a new cancer treatment study at University of Wisconsin Health’s American Family Children’s Hospital, one of six hospitals to offer the treatment in the United States, he was all ears.

“They said it would not cure the cancer, it would just slow it down.” said Matt.

“There isn’t a cure, but this might decrease the pain and increase the count levels.”

The possibility of living life in less pain made the decision an easy one for Matt. So on Aug. 10, treatment began.

“I had to try something to try to get better,” said Matt.

The treatment involved receiving a large intravenous dose of radioactive iodine attached to a substance called meta-iodobenzylguanidine, which travels through the blood stream. Patients become radioactive and temporarily hazardous to anyone they come in contact with so they are isolated in a lead-lined hospital room for seven days, the time it takes until they are no longer a hazard.

For Matt, being in a hospital room for that amount of time was something he

had gone through before. He had stayed in the hospital for five days during chemotherapy treatments.

“This was nothing new,” said Matt.

“It didn’t scare me at all.”

Although Matt was isolated in a hospital room, he didn’t feel alone. Video monitors were set up in his room so he could communicate with his family, who were in a room not far away.

His parents were also allowed in the room for short periods of time throughout the day.

“I would say for the seven days he was there, I was in and out of that room 70 times,” said Matt’s father, Paul Thuente.

Paul and his wife, Patricia, were recruited to bring Matt food, water and medications so that the nurses and doctors would not have prolonged exposure to the radioactivity from multiple patients.

Now, four months later, Matt reflects on the positive outcomes of the treatment.

“Prior to this treatment,” he said, “there were a lot of side effects. Food tasted different. But there were no side effects for this treatment.”

In his previous treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, Matt had to go in to get blood transfusions one or two times each week. Since the new therapy, he has had one transfusion total.

While the scans don’t show a decrease in the cancer, it seems to be inactive, giving Matt less pain and discomfort.

“The quality of life is better,” said Matt.

Matt will go back to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison Dec. 13 for another round of the treatment.

But he isn’t nervous.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Matt.

Red Cross opens Store of Hope sites

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Starting the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers in Eden Prairie and Minnetonka have a chance to purchase a different kind of gift for the holidays.

The American Red Cross Twin Cities Chapter has opened two Store of Hope locations, one at the Eden Prairie Center and another at the Ridgedale Shopping Center in Minnetonka. There, shoppers can learn about services the Red Cross provides, make a donation or write a message to a member of the armed services.

“For us, it’s a real grassroots way to get out and meet people,” Twin Cities

chapter Chief Executive Officer Phil Hansen.

Those who make a donation can also receive a product card, to forward the donation as a gift for someone else.

Statewide, The Red Cross has also opened stores in Mankato and Rochester. Countrywide, there are only two other locations, one in Las Vegas and another in Phoenix, Hansen said.

Hansen said the Twin Cities chapter got the idea after learning about a temporary store that opened in Portugal last year.

If not, the Bloomington Civic Theatre will attempt to bring you into the lives of six of these aptly titled 20somethings, as they vie with their inner selves on where they are in life and how to deal with it upon returning home for Christmas.

Neo Cabaret’s production of “On Our Own: A Holiday Cabaret” will debut Dec. 3 at the Black Box Theater at the Bloomington Center for the Arts inside the Bloomington Civic Plaza.

It’s a holiday performance, but before thoughts of “A Christmas Carol” dance in your head, music director Anita Ruth offers up this full disclosure: “It certainly is a family show from the perspective of the families that have older kids, but it is not “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,’” she said.

“There is only one Christmas song in the entire show. We even joke amongst ourselves that Rudolph is not here. This is a decidedly different take.”

Santa doesn’t make an appearance, and as Ruth alluded to, there are no reindeer either, though the production does include a number of real-life holiday incidents, especially for those who travel at this time of year.

The show is set in an airport waiting area where these six strangers all cross paths while heading home for the holidays.

For each, there are various levels of anxiety this holiday season, something their still-nameless generation typically deals with in coming back to the home where their childhood played itself out.

Do they go back to being a son or daughter? Would they rather be out with friends? Have those friends taken over the role of family? Why is my letter jacket still hanging in the closet?

“It’s all sorts of questions,” Ruth said. “It’s about all the extra pressures that come with being a so-called 20-something. They are always searching for their identity, trying go figure out who they are.”

The music that accompanies the show has similar questions, mainly: Where did it come from?

According to Ruth, most of the songs were found on You Tube, where a growing force of underground singer-songwriters deal with similar queries in their music.

“There is a huge movement – mostly in New York – of 20-something singer-songwriters that perform their works in Cabaret’s and post them on You Tube,” Ruth said. “It is good music, and it does speak very much to that generation. It is all about them and the whole ‘who am I going to be’, and ‘now what do I do?’”

The idea for such a show was introduced to Ruth by the group of 20something performers she worked

The store was a success in connecting with people in the area, and the local chapter wanted to try their hand at the venture.

While connecting with people in the Eden Prairie and Minnetonka area, the stores can hopefully educate people about all of the Red Cross’ services.

Last year, the Twin Cities chapter responded to 300 disaster incidents and helped around 450 families.

The Red Cross may be well known for its major disaster response and blood drives, but the Red Cross also responds to individual family disasters, such as house fires and apartment complex fires.

The Red Cross also provides Emergency Medical Technician training, swimming lessons, babysitter training and emergency communication between military service members and their family members.

Up until Dec. 8, people can stop in a Red Cross store and grab a greeting card to write a message to a veteran, active service member or service members in the hospital.

“You can just come on in and make up a card for a service member, if that’s something that moves you,” Hansen said.

The stores will be open from Nov. 26 through the end of December, Hansen said. Store hours will follow the malls’ regular hours.

All donations will go toward local services, Hansen said, and since the mall space and other operations are also donated, nearly all the funds will go toward the services the Red Cross provides, Hansen said.

In April, the group published “Practically Grown Up,” which was a broader tale of life-altering decisions these 20-somethings face. “On Our Own” is narrowed to strictly the holiday season setting.

Originally, Ruth was tepid about turning this type of Cabaret into a Christmas show, but after hearing the music and ideas presented to her, the 30-year stage veteran who has played a role in more than 150 musicals warmed to the idea.

“I wasn’t sure it would work, but this is real life,” Ruth said. “I think the show is very much grounded in reality. All the kids in the cast are indeed 20-somethings, and it’s really about the performer. It really gives the people in the show a chance to show what they can do, and you can do it with such depth.”

BRAVA! performs Dec. 10 in Edina Hear the season’s best choral music at BRAVA!’s “Christmas Is ...” concert 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Colonial Church, 6200 Colonial Way, Edina.

BRAVA! is a women’s choral ensemble based in Edina. The group performs throughout the Twin Cities and has traveled extensively to bring its message of inspiration and joy to audiences worldwide.

GooneyBirds CD release party Dec. 4 The GooneyBirds, a band comprised primarily of Edina High School graduates, is having a CD release party Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Cabooze, 917 Cedar Ave., in Minneapolis. The band is releasing “Alive,” a live album recorded in summer 2009.

All but one member of The GooneyBirds graduated from Edina High School between 1985 and 1988. The band formed in 1987 and played almost every Sunday at the Cabooze until the early 90s. They also toured extensively around the country for nearly 10 years.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kennedy’s girls basketball team has been one of the state powers during the past decade. The Eagles’ program is still strong and should be productive into the next decade.

Kennedy was 20-7 last season and tied for second in the Lake Conference at 12-4. Lakeville North won the league title with a 16-0 record.

Kennedy’s season ended with a 57-44 loss to Prior Lake in the Class 4A, Section 2 playoffs.

Eagle head coach Percy Wade expects his program’s winning tradition to continue in 2010-11.

“We have a lot of speed and athleticism on this team,” said Wade.

“But the big question is whether the girls have basketball smarts. We are expecting our young players to step up and be consistent.”

One of Kennedy’s top returnees is 5-foot—10 sophomore guard/forward Jade Martin.

“Jade was our second-leading scorer last season, averaging 13 points per game, and led us in rebounding,” said Wade. “She needs to work on her outside shot but has good athletic skills. She blocks shots well and can slash through defenses while driving to the basket.”

Martin shares the Kennedy captaincy with 5-7 senior guard Sheridan Reiners and 5-5 senior guard Shamara Duwearatchi.

“Reiners averaged 10 points per game last season and is a quiet team leader,” said Wade. “Duwearatchi is a good defensive stopper.”

Other Kennedy returnees are 5-10 ninth-grade guard Kenisha Bell, 6-1 ninth-grade guard/forward Tonoia Wade, 6-3 junior center Heather Bachman, 5-7 junior guard Micaela Meredith and 5-10 junior forward/center Isy Odor.

Kennedy varsity newcomers are 5-3 junior guard Jasmine Scott, 5-9 senior forward Brianna Reeves and 5-5 junior guard Haley Collier.

Kennedy opened its season against Chanhassen Nov. 30 and will host Eden Prairie at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.

The Eagles face Benilde-St. Margaret’s at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 4, in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.

Jefferson came within one victory of qualifying for the state AA boys hockey tournament last season. The Jaguars lost 4-1 to Edina in the Section 2AA finals.

Jefferson concluded its season with a 19-6-3 overall record. The Jaguars finished fourth in the Lake Conference with a 12-5-2 mark.

The Jaguars return a strong nucleus of players from last year’s squad. Jefferson ranks 13th among state AA teams entering this season.

Jefferson should get valuable leadership and quality play from its tri-captains. Senior forward Tim Donohue is team captain. Alternate captains are senior forward Ryan Siiro and senior defenseman John Roisum.

Jefferson coach Jeff Lindquist moved Roisum from forward to defense this season. Roisum scored 25 points on 12 goals and 13 assists last winter.

Siiro is the top returning scorer with 28 points on 15 goals and 13 assists.

Two other key returnees are senior forwards Eric Freschi and Nick Nielsen. Nielson provided 15 goals and 10 assists for 25 points a year ago. Freschi finished with 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points.

Other Jaguar forwards are junior Austin Hunt, senior Brady Dornfeld, senior Jake Pollock, senior Ben Kruger, sophomore John Lindquist and sophomore Zac Beek.

Jefferson’s defensive corps will consist of senior Nick Roffers, senior Max Crawford, sophomore Cam Bentz, sophomore Jack Weiss, sophomore Tony Roisum and John Roisum.

The Jaguars should be strong in goal with two veterans – senior Justin Woodley and junior Eric Fabano.

“We return a lot of forwards and two goalies who had goals-against averages round 2.0 per game,” said Jefferson head coach Jeff Lindquist. “We are looking forward to competing in the South Suburban Conference this season. Apple Valley, Eagan, Burnsville, Lakeville South and Jefferson should be among the conference’s top teams.”

Jefferson opened its season Nov. 30 against seventh-ranked Apple Valley. The Jaguars face a challenging test against third-ranked Eden Prairie 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Bloomington Ice Garden.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Andy Meinhardt put together a three-year plan to “restore the roar” to the Jefferson girls basketball program when he took over as head coach.

Jefferson was a state girls basketball power in the 1990s but came upon hard times this past decade.

Meinhardt admits he needed a fourth season in 2010-11 to rebuild and return the roar to the Jaguar program.

Jefferson finished 11-15 overall last season and tied for seventh in the Lake Conference with a 5-11 record.

The Jaguars were eliminated 64-23 by Eden Prairie in the Class 4A, Section 2 playoffs.

“It has taken an extra year to build up this program, but we feel good about this season with a deep, talented group of players back,” said coach Meinhardt. “We have plenty of experience and will play about 11 girls per game.”

Jefferson displayed its skill and experience last week in an opening 9469 road triumph over Duluth East Nov. 27.

The Jaguars broke the game open in the first half outscoring the Greyhounds 51-31.

All five Jefferson starters scored in double figures. Britney Scherber, a 5-8 junior point guard, led the Jaguars with 26 points. She averaged 15 points per game last season while garnering all-conference honors.

Anna Smith, 6-foot senior forward, netted 17 points. Jefferson’s 5-10 sophomore guard Brook Fritzler finished with 16 points. Smith was an all-conference selection last season averaging 15 points per game.

Also scoring in double figures were 5-10 senior forward Megan Scherber (12) and 5-8 junior guard Cassie Anderson (10).

Other Jefferson scorers were 5-8 junior guard Ellen Kokes (5), 5-9 junior guard Nicole Tobon (5) and 6-0 freshman forward Allison Riersmersma.

“Our starters can all shoot well from the three-point range,” said Meinhardt.

“The keys to our success will be depth, pressing defense and transitional offense.”

Jefferson’s four captains are the Scherber sisters, Smith and Anderson.

Jefferson will host Wayzata at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2.

The Jaguars will participate in the Breakdown Tip-Off Classic at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.

Jefferson returns home to play Park of Cottage Grove at 7:15 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 7.

The Jaguars will compete in the new South Suburban Conference.

“Lakeville North is the top-ranked team in the state and will be the team to beat in the South Suburban,” said Meinhardt. “The battle for other spots is wide open.”

Participation numbers have increased and so has the enthusiasm amidst the Kennedy boys hockey program.

Second-year Eagle head coach Dave Dillon has 37 players competing on his varsity and junior varsity teams.

Dillon hopes those added participant numbers result in Kennedy being more competitive this season. Last year, the young Eagle squad was on a learning curve and struggled while posting a 6-20 record.

The Eagles lost 9-2 to Robbinsdale Cooper Nov. 27 in the season opener. However, coach Dillon has seen positive signs from his 201011 team in early-season workouts.

“The players are sticking together and playing unselfishly,” said Dillon.

“This is a good group.

“We might take a few lumps playing each of our South Suburban Conference opponents twice each this season. But our team should be better off in the long run playing against good competition.”

Kennedy’s senior tri-captains are forwards Sam Merchant and Ryan Kutzler along with defenseman Kevin Houts.

Kennedy’s veteran forwards include Merchant, Kutzler, Andrew Lamere, Jordan Peer, Dustin Miller, Peyton Graykowski and Tom Heinrich. Eagle defenders are Spencer Sportel, Caleb Carlson, Jesse Sherman and Jack Murphy.

Kennedy varsity newcomers are senior defenseman Ryan Davis, junior forward/defenseman Matt Benolkin, sophomore defenseman Tate Carlson and sophomore forward Mike McCullen.

Junior Tony Basil returns as Kennedy’s starting goalie. His back-ups are eighth-grader Chris Marks and ninth-grader Jon Kosiak.

Kennedy tied Cooper 2-2 in the first period of its opening game but was outscored 6-0 in the second period.

Lamere and Merchant scored Kennedy goals. Kutzler picked up an assist.

Kennedy will meet Rochester John Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at Bloomington Ice Garden. Kennedy travels to St. Louis Park for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday, Dec. 4.

Kennedy’s assistant coaches are Ron Lokken, Dave Miller, Scott Manson, Chris Impagliazzo and Jeff Atchison.

KHS hosts dance event

Bloomington Kennedy High School’s girls hockey team is having a pancake breakfast fundraising event from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Applebees, 9601 Lyndale Ave. S. Breakfast includes pancakes, bacon, coffee and orange juice. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from a hockey player or at the door. Non-perishable food items for VEAP also will be collected.

Bloomington Kennedy High School will host a South Suburban Conference high kick competitive meet at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, Dec. 7.

The Bloomington Kolleens dance team will compete against other South Suburban squads. It will also be senior recognition night for the Kolleens.

Giants promote Edlefsen Right-handed pitcher Steve Edlefsen of Bloomington has been added to the San Francisco Giants 40-man roster.

Edlefsen, 25, had a 7-2 record and 2.38 earned-run average last season for the Giants’ Class AAA minor league team in Fresno, Calif.

Edlefsen was named a Pacific Coast League midseason All-Star. He had six saves in 49 relief appearances.

Woodley signs letter Jefferson High School senior Justin Woodley has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division II lacrosse at C.W. Post in New York.

Woodley, a defender, will graduate from Jefferson this spring.

JHS girls raise $8,500 Bloomington Jefferson High School girls hockey players raised $8,500 through fundraising efforts.

The money will help the Jefferson girls purchase new jerseys, helmets and other equipment. Some of that money will be used to pay for ice time.

The Jaguars thanked the Bloomington business community and the DineAndDiscounts program.

Mark Stephan is the Jefferson head coach and Steve Earl serves as president of the booster club. Lisa Cline was fundraising coordinator.

Ski warming house party The Minneapolis Ski Club will have a party to celebrate its new warming house at the base of the ski jumps just north of the Hyland Snowboard and Ski Area in Bloomington.

There will be a public open house at the new facility from 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4. There will be snacks and beverages along with tours of the 2,500square-foot warming house built by private donations and volunteer labor.

Winter rec soccer The Bloomington Kickers’ winter “Super Soccer Sundays” program begins Sunday, Jan. 2, and runs through Feb. 6 at Jefferson and Kennedy activity centers.

This program is for boys and girls in pre-kindergarten through third grade.

Bloomington Youth Soccer Club (BYSC) runs this program.
