A New Year’s Eve party for a cause
Political interlude ends for Mazoral

The sixth-annual Minnesota Miracle New Year’s Eve Celebration begins 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at the Hilton Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport hotel. The party includes a dinner, dancing and activities for children, making it a family-ori-
Newly elected state representative will be sworn in Jan. 4 BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS The call came into suburban New Orleans Nov. 2 with the news that Pat Mazoral had waited nearly three decades to share with his parents. The newly elected State Representative from House District 41B, Mazoral delivered the news to his parents in their Manderville, La., residence with a phone call to his mother, who then relayed the message to his father, Earl, who himself was too weak to take the call. Earl nodded in acknowledgement, Mazoral said, one of his final acts before succumbing to the cancer two short days later. MAZORAL: TO PAGE 22

ented celebration of the new year. Money raised during the party, which includes an auction, will benefit families of pediatric cancer patients, many of which will be weekend guests of the Hilton in 2011. The New Year’s Eve celebration raised $75,000 last year and is one of the primary fundraisers for The Miracles of Mitch Foundation. The foundation provides a weekend getaway for families of pediatric cancer patients who otherwise couldn’t afford a vacation during times of mounting medical costs and other financial concerns, according to Mike Krance, the executive director of the Chaska-based organization. Bloomington’s SWAT team responded to a call Christmas night that resulted in the death of a 36-year-old man, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The man was found dead in a residence he shared with others on the 10600 block of Verdi Road, near Oak Grove Middle School. Occupants of the home called police shortly after 10 p.m. Dec. 25. STANDOFF: TO PAGE 21

BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Claudia Kelley fell in love with public libraries as a child. The Orono resident is still one of the strongest advocates for Hennepin County Libraries. Kelley, who serves as vice president of the library board, is one of 11 volunteers who oversee one of the nation’s strongest library systems. Each year, new recruits are sought to serve on the board. This year, there will be six openings. “I am honored to have the opportunity to help shape an institution that has had a great impact on my life,” Kelley said. Her family came to the United States from Europe after World War II. “My parents were overjoyed at the abundance of books in the Minnesota libraries, as English-language books had been hard to obtain in occupied Europe during the war,” she said. As the youngest in the family, Kelley was anxious to learn to read. Regular visits to the library branch located at Glen Lake Elementary School in Minnetonka were just the ticket. Eventually, Kelley received her own library card. “I believe that I wanted that card (then) more than I have since desired any other government document, including my driver’s license, voter’s registration card and marriage license I later acquired,” Kelley said. “It held the keys to the world. Kelley passed her love and appreciation for libraries onto her children. Her mother and her aunt are also recipients of library services at their respective senior living communities. Over the decades, Kelley has seen the impact technology has had on the libraries. “I’ve gone from looking up books in a card catalog to using my home computer to select, reserve and renew library materials,” she said. Her interest in technology was also instrumental in her decision to seek appointment to the library board. Kelley came aboard just as the planning was beginning to merge the Hennepin County and Minneapolis city library systems. She proclaims the merger a success. “We reopened three previously shuttered library branches and extended open hours throughout the system,” Kelley said,

adding that the opening of two new libraries in Plymouth and Maple Grove have also been highlights of her tenure. Kelley will serve until Dec. 31, 2012. John Gibbs of Bloomington, Holly Guncheon of Plymouth and Jill Joseph of Eden Prairie are among those whose positions expire this week. The board meets monthly the fourth Wednesday at various library sites around the county. Members serve three-year terms. CMYK

Brother arrested in Bloomington following video game feud BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two brothers involved in a dispute over a Sony Playstation video game controller couldn’t settle their differences when ordered to do so by Minneapolis police, resulting in the arrest of one brother in Bloomington. The brothers, 21 and 23, began their argument Dec. 21 in their mother’s Minneapolis home, where the younger brother lives. Police were called to the house and told the two to go their separate ways. The older brother left for his Bloomington residence on the 100 block of West 96th Street, and upon arrival found the younger brother’s vehicle in the parking lot, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The older brother approached the younger brother’s vehicle. The younger brother extended his arm out of the vehicle window, as if he had a gun, and threatened the older brother. The older brother took his daughter inside their apartment building and watched as the younger brother used what appeared to be a small baseball bat to break the side mirrors of two vehicles owned by the older brother, Stehlik said. Following a call to police, the 21-year-old man was observed driving through Bloomington. Following a traffic stop, he was arrested and faces possible charges for criminal damage to property and assault for the threat made toward his brother.
said he wanted to meet with her to talk. Her boyfriend brought the 19-year-old suspect with him, Stehlik said. Inside the parked car the two males began giving her shots of alcohol. The 19-year-old suspect eventually raped her in the back seat of the vehicle, according to the complaint. The girl’s brother and father later found the trio still inside the car and contacted police. No charges are pending against the 17-year-old boyfriend, Stehlik noted.
Police officer assault
Criminal sexual conduct
A St. Paul man was arrested after scuffling with police at Mall of America. The 25-year-old was at Ruby Tuesday in the mall Dec. 20 when police were called regarding an intoxicated man at the restaurant. Officers initially took the man to their holding area inside the mall while attempting to contact a family member who could take him home, according to Stehlik. An officer attempted to conduct a bloodalcohol test, a standard procedure used to determine the health and welfare of an intoxicated person, Stehlik explained. The man became agitated and uncooperative, lunging toward an officer in an attempt to grab a Taser gun from the officer’s holster. The man kicked another officer in the leg twice and also spit saliva and blood in the face of an officer and attempted to bite officers while being restrained, Stehlik said. The man had fallen while attempting to stand up in the holding area and hit his head on a desk, Stehlik noted. The man faces assault and obstructing the legal process charges.
A 19-year-old Bloomington man faces one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony, following an incident with his friend’s girlfriend. The man, charged Dec. 21 in Hennepin County District Court, faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $30,000 if convicted. The charge follows a Dec. 19 incident in the parking lot of a Bloomington apartment complex. A 15-year-old girl was contacted by her 17-year-old boyfriend, who
A small get together at an apartment in east Bloomington ended when two men robbed four other people in the apartment. The incident occurred Dec. 17 in an apartment on the 1900 block of East 86th Street, according to Stehlik. Three of the four victims were residents of the apartment and the two men who robbed them were acquaintances of a 19-
Apartment robbery
year-old occupant of the apartment. The two suspects had called the 19-year-old and suggested they hang out at the man’s apartment. While the group was gathered in the apartment one of the suspects went to the bathroom, emerging several minutes later brandishing two handguns, Stehlik said. The 19-year-old man told police he was new to the area and had met one of the two men reported to have robbed him through a third man he had recently met at a nearby Super America. The trio had recently been discussing economic hardships and the 19-year-old man had said that he and his roommates had recently saved up enough money to catch up on their rent payments, Stehlik explained. The two suspects took $1,000 and two cell phones, according to the report.
Driving while impaired A 42-year-old Brooklyn Park man with three previous convictions for driving while impaired was arrested Dec. 19 after he was observed driving erratically through Bloomington. Police received a report of an erratic driver traveling northbound on France Avenue at 11:06 a.m. Dec. 19. The vehicle was reported to have nearly hit other vehicles and crashed into snow banks along the side of the road, Stehlik said. The vehicle turned west on American Boulevard and then north on Northland Drive before pulling into a parking ramp. The driver was unable to maintain his balance without holding onto the door of his vehicle, Stehlik noted. The man did not have alcohol in his system, according to a Breathalyzer test, but was found to be in possession of two empty bottles of prescription Hydrocodone, a painkiller and “commonly abused prescription medication,” Stehlik said. The man faces a first-degree driving while impaired charge as a result of his three prior convictions during the past 10 years, and was driving after license cancelation, Stehlik said.

My resolution this year: No resolutions for 2011 Of all the traditions involved with ringing in the New Year, I find resolutions to be the most ridiculous. It’s even more preposterous than eating black-eyed peas for good luck. Yet everyone does it. Make resolutions, that is. The blackeyed pea-eating is mostly a southern tradition. Most resolutions include the words “diet” and “in shape” in some combination. Think about it. The worst possible time to start a diet (or eating plans as they are now called) is the dead of winter when your body is in near hibernation. The cold makes you crave handfuls of lard slathered over cooked beef, as well as chocolate and creamy soups. None of that is diet food. Forget about dropping weight until spring. That’s when Mother Nature does it. Snow

melts and runs off into streams, just like body fat does when the temperatures get warmer. If you’ve ever been anywhere near a health club around the first week of January, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Suddenly once placid and kind of relaxing sessions with free weights become a cacophony of people, sweat and noise. It’s like lifting weights in the subway. If you can stick it out until March, you’ll find yourself pretty much all alone again. That’s about the time most resolution people are abandoning ship.
Oh there are a handful who make a resolution about losing weight and stick to it. If you’re one, I’d like to hear from you. You should receive some type of reward for your efforts. Naturally there are dozens of other resolutions that folks come up with around this time of year. Spend more time with the family. Actually, that one’s reserved for politicians who find themselves forced to resign. It never fails, rather than saying “I’m quitting because I’m a scoundrel,” it always comes out “I’m quitting to spend more time with my family.” I’m going to be a better person. Okay, your first assignment is to head to the gym and learn how to put up with all of the resolution people. Being a better person isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You no doubt have your favorite. You’ve probably had the same resolution every year
for most of your life. Just the fact that you have to bring it up each year says something about your will power. Experts in this field (yes, there are some) tell us that effectively changing your habits requires small alterations in your behavior over a period of time. Time appears to be the key word. Humans have a hard time changing overnight. Have you ever tried to quit smoking? It takes some people years to finally kick the habit. Most American’s are part of the now generation. If I can’t have it now, I don’t want it. Delayed gratification isn’t our bag. We’d rather have the fat sucked out of us with a machine than spend a year getting in shape. This year, save yourself the grief. Join me in resolving not to have any resolutions in 2011. You’ll be much happier.
For health of waters, lay off the salt this winter Winter has arrived and along with it slippery sidewalks and driveways. For many, the first inclination is to toss handfuls of salt (sodium chloride or rock salt) at the ice in hopes of making it melt. First of all, if the temperature is below 15 degrees F, the salt won’t work. But there are other reasons to lay off the salt. Aside from the damage it can do to vehicles and structures, salt poses a major threat to the health of our lakes, streams and wetlands. While it’s easy to reach for a bag of salt and dump it on your sidewalk and driveway, that salt has to go somewhere when the snow melts. That “somewhere” is either into the sewer system and eventually into lakes and streams; or if it

ends up on the grass, seeping into the groundwater system. It doesn’t do your lawn any favors, either. So what difference does it make? Well, for one thing, salt doesn’t really break down, even if you can’t see it. Think of dissolving a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water; it’s invisible, but you sure can taste it. And just a little salt has a big impact. According to Connie Fortin, whose environmental consulting company has advised the Minnesota Department of
Transportation, the federal standard is about 1 teaspoon of salt per five gallons of water. More than that will harm whatever lives in the water; enough of it can kill fish and other aquatic life. High levels of salt can also hasten the contamination of soil along major highways. How bad is the problem? In 2008, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency listed five metro area streams as impaired by chloride. The Bassett Creek Watershed Commission, which works to maintain water quality in nine west metro cities, knows that chloride is a major pollutant in area lakes and streams. There are four things we recommend to protect lakes and streams:
• Sparingly apply a liquid deicer before a storm to prevent ice build-up. Make your own de-icer by combining a half-cup of rock salt (not table salt) with two cups of hot water. Use a spray bottle to apply it to sidewalks and other areas of concern. • Shovel snow early and often to prevent ice build-up. • Sweep up any left-over salt and store it for use later. • Remember that salt stops working at 15 degrees F, so avoid using it on those really cold days. Nash, a professional geologist, is administrator of the Bassett Creek Watershed Management Commission. Member cities include Crystal, Golden Valley, Medicine Lake, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, New Hope, Plymouth, Robbinsdale and St. Louis Park.

REAL ESTATE MARKET CREATES OPPORTUNITY!
Saying goodbye to a dear friend “The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend.” – Henry David Thoreau Nobody I’ve encountered in my life has more encompassed those words than my former co-worker and friend Sally Thompson. Last week the world lost a great writer, storyteller, community journalist, pet owner and – more importantly – friend and mother. In the time that I knew her – just over five years – I’m hard-pressed to think of a more caring, selfless and gracious person. When I started at the Sun-Sailor, Sally was the first person I met. We shared a cubicle wall, so I found her easily accessible and always willing to answer my questions. I wasn’t new to community journalism, but with only six months of previous experience, I was still a little wet behind the ears. Despite that relative inexperience and, in many ways naiveté, Sally never held anything against me. She was willing to share her vast knowledge and experiences to help me improve my craft. She acted as a mentor, a confidant and an unlicensed therapist not only for myself but also for a majority of the other people in the newsroom. During a particularly rough patch with an overbearing managing editor, Sally helped keep at least two of us from leaving the paper by simply listening to our issues and talking us off the ledge. But Sally’s wisdom and caring wasn’t limited to the newsroom. She was genuinely interested in what was going on in our lives. And when she asked she truly listened to responses as opposed to simply hearing it. Sally was also a tough and stubborn woman who would impose her will upon you if she had to – but always with a smile and in a way that made it seem like you made the decision yourself. About four years ago I was very ill, but due to my own stubbornness refused to go to the doctor. Between May 5 and Aug. 5 I lost more than 40 pounds. I wasn’t dieting or exercising, I simply wasn’t eating or drinking – aside from Funyons and Mountain Dew, which were the only things that didn’t make me sick. One morning I arrived at work and took my jacket off, exposing my T-shirt and my dwindling stomach.

Sally, glancing up from her computer screen, noticed and immediately scolded, “you’re still not eating, are you?” I could lie to my mother, who was three hours away in South Dakota and couldn’t see me, but not to Sally – a mother herself. She saw right through me. When I told her I hadn’t been eating and for exactly how long, she sat in her desk and watched over the cubicle wall as I made a doctor’s appointment. If I hadn’t, she warned, she’d drag me there herself. When I told my mother the story, she started referring to Sally as my “Minneapolis Mom.” When the two finally met some time later, she told her that. I don’t think Sally minded the title. I think everyone who worked with or around Sally could tell a similar story. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary. She remembered the names and back-stories of your friends and families. And, for those with children, there’d be the for no special reason gift that she’d send home for them. Sally also was very proud of her own family and roots. She was a proud North Dakota native, with many interesting stories to tell about the people and situations that can only come out of small towns and she glowed any time she spoke of her alma mater, Concordia College. Nothing made her happier, however, than talking about her daughter, Laurie. The bond those two shared is one that most people can only dream of and the pride she showed when talking about Laurie and her accomplishments made your proud of her, even if you’d only met her a time or two. It was infectious. Sally, we all love you, will miss you terribly and will forever be better people for having the privilege of knowing you. Thank you for everything.

HELLO, WINTER Snow, cold arrive before winter officially begins BY CHRIS DILLMANN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

With winter only a week old, it’s already the snowiest season for the Twin Cities in two decades. As of Dec. 22, 2010 is already the second snowiest month on record and on pace to break the old record. Already pilling up 33.1 inches at the Chanhassen National Weather Service reporting station, only 1.2 inches more is needed to break the record set in 1969 according to the National Weather Service. Why all the snow? “Two things that came into play,” said weather service meteorologist Michelle Margraf. “There’s been extremely cold arctic oscillation, which brings the cold arctic air south combining with warm, moisture heavy air from the south mixing to
cause a strong contrast of air masses resulting in the snow, and the tracks have been moving over the upper Midwest.” Margraf said this particular pattern usually doesn’t set up this early, and the storm that started the night of Dec. 10 and lasted through the following Saturday, turned out to be the fifth largest storm on record and largest storm ever in December in the state – 17 inches. When it comes to breaking records, all official records are taken at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which has reported 28.8 inches of snow this year. The totals differ because at times a storm will stall out with a line over the metro leaving some areas dry others with a fresh blanket of snow. WINTER: TO PAGE 9

Winter FROM PAGE 8 There has also been a trace or more of snow on 16 of the first 20 days of the month according the weather service. The snow is beginning to have an impact on cities. In Excelsior, superintendent of public works Dave Wisdorf said the city has funds set aside for snow removal. “In our budget planning we have funds for contract help to plow snow,” Wisdorf said. “We just try to juggle hours to get a lot of work done before businesses open to make sure the streets are cleaned for the residents.” Wisdorf also said with the added work on the limited number of drivers in smaller communities means it’s a balancing act to make sure the drivers don’t become fatigued. This year, plowing isn’t the only concern. The City of Excelsior stockpiles the snow removed in the open lot next to the cemetery on Beehrle Ave. and open park space. The city then takes a blower to compact the snow to keep up with additional snow. “We’re starting to lose space,” Wisdorf said.
The Commons in Excelsior is covered with snow to match frozen Lake Minnetonka in the background. The only things visible were the benches, waste baskets and trees from the more than 33 inches of snow already accumulated during the season. (Photo by Chris Dillmann • Sun Newspapers) “It is a season that people haven’t seen in 20 years.” In Shorewood, the city uses a method called “winging back” the snow, where the plows push the snow farther back from the boulevard or median. Since the city doesn’t haul snow because of fuel costs and lack of space to put it, public works director Larry Brown said the process

after the last snow could take 2-3 weeks to do the 50 miles of roads in the city. “We understand the inconvenience of having large piles of snow in the boulevards and medians, but the need to have a safe travel roadway is imperative,” Brown said. “We’re just asking people to be patient.” The city is also taking a hit financially because of the above-average snowfall.
9
“Our snow and salt budget is very tight now, I think another huge snowfall would probably put us over,” Brown said. Because they have to get out early, starting at 2 a.m. if conditions permit, to get a jump-start on traffic, the added hours of overtime have also put a strain on the budget. Yet, Brown said things usually average out. “Even though we are seeing a spike in snow fall this month, we didn’t get much last spring so 2010 should even out,” Brown said. He also said if residents see any issues with sight distance in the intersections to e-mail the city with the location. Another factor in the abnormal weather pattern is something meteorologists call the “Pineapple Express,” a term used for the warm, moist tropical air arriving from Hawaii. It creates tightly wound systems that have been providing so much moisture when it confronts the arctic air moving south. Along with the moisture in the storms, the intense low barometric pressures have created strong winds as well. “Weather is a response to an imbalance in the atmosphere,” Margraf said. “The greater the temperature difference, the greater the winds blow.” The winds contributed to the severity of the storm that occurred mid-December. Yet, too much a good thing can be bad. “We’re hoping we don’t have a lot more snow,” Margraf said. “We worry about the spring melt, there is already a lot of snow that will lead to large amounts of run-off.” Though, what is deemed “average” never really turns out to be, Margraf said the weather variables come with the territory. She also adds with the deep snow pack, expect a colder spring because it will take more of the sun’s energy to melt the snow instead of heating the air, as well as the snow reflecting the sun’s rays more. “It’s something we don’t see very often,” she said. “It’s been one of those Minnesota winters we’re famous for.”
FROM PAGE 9 Then there are those who love the winter weather. “It’s absolutely wonderful,” said Fred Seymour with Three Rivers Park District. “It gets the people enthused, if they don’t see the snow in the backyard they have a harder time coming out. This is awesome.” With overall park use up by 30 percent for the month over last year according to Seymour, the park district and its facilities are expected to have a good winter if the conditions stay good.

Whole Foods gets OK from Edina BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Plans for a new Whole Foods Market in Edina are moving forward despite an exterior Mayor Jim Hovland called “extraordinarily unappealing.” The store slated for Centennial Lakes Plaza shopping center “falls short of the mark,” Hovland said at the Tuesday, Dec. 21, Edina City Council meeting. The City Council unanimously approved Whole Foods’ final development plan at the meeting, but with a condition that the developer revise the east side of the building. The 36,000 square-foot grocery store will replace the Storables and Thomasville Furniture stores at the southeast corner of France Avenue and Parklawn Avenue. Hovland took issue with the building’s east wall near the entrance to the shopping center off Parklawn Avenue. He wanted more visual interest added to the primarily brick façade. Council members were happy with the front of the store – the south end of the building facing into the parking lot — and landscaping measures along the west and north sides. Bruce Carlson, project coordinator with Mid-America Real Estate Group, said he would work with city staff to incorporate additional landscaping or signage on the east side before a building permit is issued. He asked for approval at the meeting to allow construction to begin when leases at Storables and Thomasville end in February. “It’s a very desirable occupancy to have in Edina. I would hate to see this held up over an aesthetic thing,” said Councilmember Scot Housh. With approval, Carlson said construction is likely to begin March 2011. The store would open in spring 2012. City Planner Cary Teague called the project unique in that it required no rezoning or variances. “This is a straight-forward final development plan,” he said. The plan entails tearing down the existing 35,000 square-foot buildings to construct Whole Foods. Carlson said they first tried to put Whole Foods into the existing structure, but that was not feasible. Kathy Anderson, project architect with Architectural Consortium, LLC, said the grocery store design maintains elements used in other buildings at the 1980s shopping center. In addition to brick, the façade incorporates limestone featured in other Edina buildings. The building will also be pushed closer to France Avenue, and an outdoor patio and seating area will be added along the street. “We think it’s a great addition to enliven and make it more animated on France Avenue,” she said.
YMCA also approved The Edina City Council also unanimously approved a final development plan and rezoning for Southdale YMCA, 7355 York Ave. S., at its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 21. The plans include an approximately 15,000 square-foot addition to the existing structure to add a new leisure pool, fitness center and studio. The YMCA announced earlier this year it was abandoning a prior plan to construct a new 73,000 square-foot center and 130-unit housing facility for people with disabilities, citing the current fundraising environment. The addition and renovation will also add windows and a new façade with copper-toned metal panels to the currently nondescript brick building front along York Avenue. “I think you’ve done a terrific job of opening it up to the street and making it more welcoming...than the old fortress YMCA,” said Mayor Jim Hovland. As part of the approval, the site was rezoned from its nonconforming use of singlefamily residential to a planned office district. City Planner Cary Teague said Planning Commission concerns about pedestrian safety were also addressed. A sidewalk will be added through the parking lot to link the building with York Avenue. There will also be bike racks on site and a pick-up and drop-off zone near the building entrance. Anita Bydlon, vice president of property, facilities and new development for the YMCA of Metropolitan Minneapolis, said the organization has worked for 10-plus years on a plan for the original 1975 structure. The result is a “really great plan that meets the needs of the community,” she said. Construction will begin in spring.
Councilmember Joni Bennett said the new layout of the site, which moves a loading dock off France Avenue to the building’s east end, is an improvement over what’s there. “It’s a very good solution,” she said. The final development plan also addresses walkability issues raised by the Planning Commission, which gave its unanimous recommendation Wednesday, Dec. 1. The developer will construct a sidewalk along France Avenue from Parklawn Avenue to West 76th Street and also add four islands in the parking lot. Daniel Blackburn, store team leader at the Minneapolis Whole Foods, said there would also be several bike racks to accommodate both shoppers and employees. Whole Foods, the nation’s leading seller of organic produce, also has a store in St. Paul and recently announced plans for a Minnetonka location.

Bren Road, 169 interchange project scheduled for spring BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS The interchange at Highway 169 and Bren Road in Minnetonka might not be fun for rush hour drivers now, but things will get better. Minnetonka and the Minnesota Department of Transportation are partnering on a reconstruction project. It is located adjacent to Opus Business Park, home to United Health Group. Minnetonka director of community development Julie Wischnack said the project would likely come before the City Council for approval in January. Construction is scheduled to begin this spring – probably March or April. It will require closure of the bridge over 169, which will likely happen in June. Wischnack said the plan was to use accelerated bridge construction methods, adding the goal was to get it done in 90 days. “We want to get that done quickly,” she said. “It’s going to be a very phased approach so we can keep the ramps open as much as possible.” However, before the project starts, the city must acquire six commercial properties located at the site. Formal offers were presented to the property owners in August. Wischnack said the property acquisition step was still in progress, but that she was optimistic it would be complete in time for construction to start.
Earlier this year, United Health Group began construction on a campus expansion, building an 11-story, 342,000 square-foot office building. The expansion is one of the reasons the Bren Road interchange needs to be improved. United Health Group’s new building won’t open until 2012, meaning its construction will be occurring at the same time as the Bren Road project. The good news, Wischnack said, was that most of the heavy-truck traffic for the building work was happening now and would be complete before the interchange work begins. Nevertheless, the Bren Road project will certainly cause some headaches. The area is already congested at times, and the heavy congestion a short distance south on Highway 169 at the Interstate 494 interchange in Eden Prairie doesn’t help matters. “169 is always congested – that’s not a new phenomenon,” Wischnack said. “The pain is happening at the same time. It’s going to be challenging.” About 12,000 people work in Opus Business Park. One of Minnetonka’s goals while the Bren Road project is going on is to alert these employees with traffic updates to their phones through Twitter and other programs. “We want a just-in-time notification,” Wischnack said. For updates and more information on the Bren Road project, visit eminnetonka. com.

The callers reported that the man said he was going to kill himself and was loading ammunition into an assault rifle and handgun at the time of the call, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The three occupants were instructed to leave the home and meet a police officer down the street. In the meantime the man called police, telling a dispatcher he was going to kill himself. Both the dispatcher and an officer at the scene heard a gunshot at approximately 10:18, Stehlik said. Police did not immediately enter the residence after hearing the gunshot. “They wanted to make continued efforts to contact him,” Stehlik said. Those efforts were unsuccessful, however, and the police department’s SWAT team was dispatched to the incident because of the report-
21
ed weaponry in the man’s possession, Stehlik explained. The SWAT team established a perimeter around the house, evacuated nearby residents or ensured they had a safe area for shelter in their homes and blocked off traffic to the area. “Something like this impacts the neighborhood,” Stehlik noted. After securing the area and failing to establish contact with the man, officers entered the house shortly before 1 a.m. and found the man dead. Situations involving hostages or a standoff with police may develop quickly, putting officers at risk, according to Stehlik. Officers will do as much as possible to mitigate risks to themselves during situations that do not involve hostages or pose significant threat to others, as was the case on Christmas night, Stehlik noted. Although the working assumption is that the man died of a selfinflicted gunshot wound, other causes need to be ruled out before the investigation is closed, Stehlik said.

The emotions, as you would expect, were mixed for Mazoral. But knowing his father was alive long enough to hear the news of his success was of some comfort. “In the weeks leading up to his diagnosis of cancer, he was very supportive and always wanted to talk about how the campaign was going,” Mazoral said last week from his new office inside the State Office Building adjacent to the Minnesota State Capitol. “Throughout my life, he was very supportive of what I as doing, so it was nice he was able to hear the news.” No question he had waited long enough to find out. Mazoral, a Republican, originally ran for a State Senate position in 1982, losing to current Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman in that race. In the 28 years since, Mazoral had focused his work on a career that began in law and transitioned into the financial services industry. A father of two grown daughters, Mazoral decided to get back into politics with the direct charge of making sure his children aren’t writing checks to cover up the mistakes currently being made in government. So with the blessing of both his kids, as well as his wife, Barbara, Mazoral dived back into the political spotlight this past year, campaigning throughout the summer and eventually claiming victory over DFL incumbent Paul Rosenthal. “The thing that really got me to run again was to see that we weren’t leaving what I saw as a big bill for our children,” Mazoral said. “That is where having children I think really changes perspective a bit. You have a couple of people that you have raised and love, and it just didn’t seem moral what we were doing.” In the next two years, he’ll have his opportunity to do something about it. For the first time in decades, the Republican Party has a majority in both the House and Senate. The immediate task at hand for all involved is to find a way to meet the constitutional mandate of erasing a record deficit in the state’s budget. But first, he had to determine how to get to where that difficult decision would be made. Mazoral holds a degree in physics from the University of Minnesota and a law degree from William Mitchell College of Law. This past summer, he accepted a spot as senior vice president for university relations at Bethel University in St.
Paul, and now he’s a 61-year-old freshman in the Minnesota’s House of Representatives. The official first days on the job won’t come until after he is sworn in Jan. 4, but orientation is under way, and it’s come with the typical challenges presented to freshmen of any age. “It’s kind of jaw-dropping,” said Mazoral. “You earn your way in here, and you earn your way out. My hope is I do enough to earn the right to stay on.” The Leadership of the House is certainly putting him in a position to succeed. Committee designations were finalized last week, and Mazoral landed on four separate committees that will each utilize his 30-plus years of experience in the business world. Mazoral was named to the Civil Law Committee, the Judiciary Committee, the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee and the Higher Education Committee. “All the committee assignments reflect my career,” Mazoral said. “I was asked what my preferences would be, but certainly there were no guarantees. I suspect that part of those selections were because I am an older legislator, and I have had careers in those areas. It’s not like I’m reaching out for something I might have an interest in, which is exciting, because I believe I’ll be able to have some valuable insight with what I will be working on.” That would be, in essence, helping to take care of his own backyard. He was born in Louisiana and moved to Pittsburgh when he was five. Two years later, the family moved to Bloomington, and other than a few stops for college, he’s never left. He was a member of Bloomington Kennedy’s second graduating class, and both of his daughters graduated from Bloomington Jefferson. “My heart is and always has been in Bloomington,” Mazoral said. When he was a kid, it was just a mile walk to old Metropolitan Stadium. Building a new stadium is expected to be considered in the 2011 session. Mazoral admitted when it comes to a new Vikings home, he’s prepared to listen – something he said he will be doing a lot of in the early days of his first term. “My ears will be open,” he said. “There is a lot to soak in. This whole thing, even walking in here today, the reaction is, ‘wow.’ It’s an honor to be able to be a part of something like this, but now that I’m here, I have a responsibility to my district and, really, to the entire state of Minnesota. My intention is to stay true to why I told people to elect me for this office, and that is what I intend to do.”

His family was the beneficiary of financial support during his hospitalization and treatment, but the financial challenges of other families in similar situations were not lost upon him. Chepokas gave more than $6,000 of family savings anonymously to other families in the hospital, and made his father “pinky swear” that the effort would continue.

Jerry Kill might turn out to be a successful head football coach at the University of Minnesota. However, it is unfortunate the Gopher coaching search committee never reached out to an out- GREG standing candidate like St. Louis Park native Marc KLEVEN Trestman. Sports Editor The former Oriole AllState quarterback built an impressive college and professional coaching resume over the past four decades. Most recently, the 54-year-old Trestman coached the Montreal Alouettes to their second consecutive Canadian Football League championship. The Alouettes defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 21-18 in the Grey Cup championship game Nov. 28 in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. This was Trestman’s third year as Montreal’s head coach. And he seems content with his current job. “I never heard from the University of Minnesota regarding its head football coaching vacancy,” said Trestman last week from his off-season home in Raleigh, N.C. “I have two years left on my contract with Montreal and my main focus is on that coaching job. “I didn’t know much about the CFL before coming here. Canadian rules differ from those in the U.S., but coaching is still the same. We have high-character players and winning the Grey Cup for the second time was quite a privilege. Things have been great for me in Montreal.” Trestman commutes between Montreal and Raleigh during football season. His wife Cindy stays with their two daughters (ages 18 and 16) while they attend high school in Raleigh. Trestman had a law degree to fall back on in case coaching football didn’t work out. He earned that degree at the University of Miami while serving as an assistant coach under Jimmy Johnson. Trestman, a former quarterback at Minnesota and Moorhead State, helped coach Miami to the 1983 national championship. Trestman went on to the NFL with the Vikings, Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions,
Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders. Then he left the pro coaching ranks to be offensive coordinator at North Carolina State before returning to the pros with the Alouettes. I covered Trestman decades ago when he starred at Park. After talking with him recently, he hasn’t lost any of his personality. Trestman’s football knowledge, common sense, intelligence and people-managing skills would have been assets for the Gophers’ football program.
State wrestling change The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors recently decided to condense the four-day state wrestling tournament into three days. There will be a team tournament on Thursday, March 3, to decide champions in three classes. Then separate individual tournaments for the three enrollment classes will be conducted Friday, March 4, and Saturday, March 5. The Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul is the site for both team and individual tournaments.
Zero Week concept The MSHSL has approved a “Zero Week” concept for next season. High school football teams approved for a Zero Week schedule would start their seasons one week earlier than customary, but would have a mandatory bye week during the season. The idea is intended to help schools with scheduling issues. Schools that wanted to schedule a non-conference game but didn’t have a common bye week could play during Zero Week, probably in late August. Zero Week could have a minimal impact on North Suburban, Classic Suburban and Missota conference teams. But Zero Week might benefit schools from the five-member Lake Conference. Each of those schools had four slots to fill for non-conference games in 2010. Wayzata was unable to fill its schedule and played only six regular season games instead of the usual eight. And Eden Prairie traveled to Winnipeg, Man., to play two Canadian teams the same day.
