Brewing the cup o’ joe in a new way New coffee shop more community than corporate
Going for a spin
BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Bloomington’s newest coffee shop hopes to brew up a strong sense of community on the city’s West Side. West Side Perk, a new, independently owned coffee shop, opened June 10. The shop is located on the corner of Old Shakopee Road and Bloomington Ferry Road. West Side Perk features all the trappings of a traditional coffee shop — plush seating, plenty of spots to hunker down and read the newspaper, and a variety of hot drinks — any of which may be found at one of Bloomington’s many chain coffee destinations. However, West Side Perk owner Deb Irvin, who has called Bloomington home for the past 20 years, hopes to set her shop apart by cultivating a sense of community. “Our tagline is ‘Coffee with the community,’” said Irvin. “I really want to center everything we do here around our community.” Irvin plans for West Side Perk to host events she hopes will bring Bloomington residents together, including showcases of local artists and musicians and a monthly book

France Ave. repair project delayed in shutdown Federal funds for county road project require state approval BY KATIE MINTZ SUN NEWSPAPERS Here’s another item to add to the list of state government shutdown impacts. A concrete pavement repair project planned this summer on France Avenue South between Highway 62 and Interstate 494 in Edina and Bloomington may be delayed. The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved the estimated $640,000 project Tuesday, June 28. But federal dollars for the project require approval of the contractor plan by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, which was closed Friday, July 1, without a state budget in place. The joy of singing Twin Cities Show Chorus sees success in competition, charity work BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS Winning is important, but it is not everything as the Twin Cities Show Chorus is all about the joy of singing. The Twin Cities Show Chorus is a chapter in the Canadian-American Region Six and is affiliated with the global singing organization known as Sweet Adelines International. The group features women from the ages of 18 to 80 among its more than 65 members. Traveling from as far as Wisconsin and as close as Richfield, Edina and Bloomington, the Twin Cities
Show Chorus rehearses every Tuesday night from 7-10 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Peace in Richfield or the Calvary Lutheran Church in Edina. Celebrating 35 years together, the group is led by Master Director Judy Olson. “We have been lucky to have an artistic director that can really dance,” member and Lead Section Coordinator Wendy Hamilton said. Olson is an accomplished choreographer and a member of the Sweet Adelines International Music Faculty. Traveling frequently, Olson coaches choruses and quartets in staging, choreography and performance techniques. The Twin Cities Show Chorus is not just a group of women who just want to sing, they are a support group and a CHORUS: TO NEXT PAGE

Chorus FROM PREVIOUS PAGE team, according to Hamilton. In 1993, Hamilton was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I didn’t need to find a support group these women are my support group,” Hamilton said of the chorus helping her through her time of need. Now a healthy cancer survivor, Hamilton swears the women in the Twin Cities Show Chorus and singing saved her life. “Our singing keeps us young and healthy,” Hamilton states. This group is not just limited to the talents of their voices. The Twin Cities Show Chorus is involved in supporting and fundraising for causes like Dress for Success, Going Green Shopping Bags, Susan G. Komen For the Cure, Project Linus, Harriet Tubman Center for Battered Women and the Special Olympics. The group also puts a large amount of time and effort into the Young Women in Harmony program. Sponsored by Sweet Adelines International, the program offers
music educators a means of including the study and performance of barbershop harmony in school music programs. The aim is to provide materials, training and performance opportunities for the American musical art form of barbershop, according to the website. “We hold a all-day event, teaching the girls two songs, with the choreography, and then put on a performance in the afternoon,” Hamilton said. This cause is very important to the chorus because of the decline in music programs due to budget cuts, according to Hamilton. Giving back to the community is a priority to the Twin Cities Show Chorus, but so is singing. As a result of their practice and dedication, the Twin Cities Show Chorus was named the 2010 Regional Champions and will go on to compete in Houston, Texas, against 50 other choruses in October. “Everyone that goes up on that stage is a winner,” Hamilton said humbly. AirExpo 2011 to bring historic planes, pilots for all to see this weekend BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The people and planes that have made history will make an appearance at the AirExpo 2011, hosted by Wings of the North, July 16 and 17 at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie. “It’s kind of like a community fair. It just happens to have an aviation theme,” said Wings of the North President Bob Jasperson. It will be especially meaningful for World War II veterans and the local history buffs and onlookers who would like to see and honor them. Among the 60 distinguished aviators and guests who are arriving, referred to as VIPs, WWII veterans may provide an opportunity for the guests who want to hear first-hand what are now becoming rare stories,
Jasperson said. Dick Cole will be one of them, Jasperson said. He’s the 95-year-old who flew as a co-pilot in Doolittle Raid (named after pilot James “Jimmy” Doolittle) over Japan in 1942, which served as a moral victory for the United States following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Jim Hill, a former member of the WWII Marine fighter squadron known as the “Black Sheep Squadron” and Jim Gomer, the last Tuskegee Airman from Minnesota, will also take part in the AirExpo, Jasperson said. Another WWII veteran expected in attendance is Wayne Johnson, who was with the “Flying Tigers” during the war. EXPO: TO PAGE 18

PUBLIC SAFETY
Shakopee man leads Bloomington police on multi-highway chase BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN A 31-year-old Shakopee man led police on a chase along several highways after driving over a median and onto Highway 100. The suspect was first spotted by a Bloomington police officer driving near Poor Richard’s Common House when the driver hopped a median dividing the highway from a frontage road on July 1. The officer pursued the man as he merged onto westbound Interstate 494. The suspect then accelerated up to 90 mph after the officer had tried to stop him, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The suspect continued to flee southbound on Highway 169, where he was slowed up in traffic. He then merged on to Highway 101, performed a rolling stop at a red light and pulled onto Stage Coach Road in Shakopee. The suspect then pulled into a business parking lot and gave himself up. He refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, said Stehlik.

The suspect was alone in the vehicle. No injuries were reported as a result of the chase. The suspect may face felony charges for fleeing police in a motor vehicle.
Would-be burglars apprehended A male and female in possession of burglary tools and a stolen Apple iPad were arrested after an officer assigned to burglary detail noticed their vehicle leaving the parking lot of a closed business July 4. The officer, who was parked on the 7900 block of 12th Avenue in an unmarked car, grew suspicious when he observed a gray Ford station wagon leaving the lot of a closed business. The officer, who had been parked for as long as 30 minutes, never saw the suspects enter the parking lot, Stehlik said. All businesses surrounding the lot were closed. The 34-year-old female sus-

Domestic Assault A Bloomington man was arrested following a suspected assault at an apartment building on the 8700 block of Portland Avenue South. Police arrived at the apartment building following a domestic disturbance call July 2. Officers could hear a male and female arguing. Officers knocked on the door of the apartment that the disturbance was coming from and were met by an adult male, who was later identified as the suspect, Stehlik said. Inside the apartment, officers spoke with an adult female victim. According COPS: TO NEXT PAGE

pect in the vehicle stared at the officer as they passed his car, spoke to the male driver and repeatedly looked back at the officer. The officer lost the suspects briefly due to traffic but located them shortly thereafter. While waiting for a marked squad car to come stop the suspects, the officer saw the female suspect repeatedly reached into the back seat. The female suspect was holding tool-like objects and a book-like object in her hands, according to Stehlik. The suspects were eventually stopped in Minneapolis at 36thStreet East and 24th Avenue. Inside the car, officers could see various tools, including bolt cutters and a cordless power drill. Officers also saw an iPad case on the rear seat and two purses on the floorboards. The male suspect, 36, claimed they were in the area Dumpster diving, but changed his story multiple times, according to Stehlik. Officers located an Apple iPad and

to the victim, the suspect, a 21-year-old Bloomington man, had entered her apartment earlier in the day by climbing onto her second story balcony. The suspect entered the apartment and found the female and another male “making out.” The suspect chased the other male out of the apartment, and then returned, once again climbing the apartment balcony, according to the victim. The suspect allegedly grabbed the victim’s throat and squeezed, making it difficult for her to breathe. The suspect then attempted to strike the victim with a glass vodka bottle and threatened her with a bar stool, said Stehlik. According to the victim, she and the suspect had been in a relationship for about six years and have a child together. The victim recently ended the relationship and the suspect did not take it well. Officers noted the condition of the apartment clearly indicated a struggle had occurred. The suspect is currently in custody, according to Stehlik.

What are you doing to MY state park? Editor’s note: I’m not going to deal with the nitty-gritty of the state shutdown. Mostly, because politics are a tricky animal, and I won’t pretend I have any sort of solution for the current predicament. There are other related issues, however, that really get my goat and need addressing. I’m bummed about the Minnesota state shutdown. Mostly bummed because it means my favorite summer activity — heading to William O’Brien State Park in Marineon-St. Croix, Minn. — isn’t possible at the moment. But I’m particularly upset because I had a sneaking suspicion the shut-

down and subsequent closure of the parks would leave a gaping hole wherein low-life vandals could step in and harm something important to me as a nature enthusiast and Minnesotan. In case you didn’t hear, numerous media outlets are reporting extensive vandalism at Afton State Park, damage to Department of Natural
Resources facilities in Grand Marais and other issues at parks across the state. Absolutely senseless and pointless acts that served only to ruin a shared natural resource. I love state parks. I feel at home in them so it’s tough to avoid the “get-off-my-lawn-youkids” impulse here. Setting aside, for a moment, the fact that as a state resource, the parks are funded at last partially through tax dollars making it silly for Hoodlum A to destroy public property that Hoodlum A (assuming he pays taxes) would have to help fund to repair, the main issue to me is the idea that the minute some-
one isn’t watching it’s somehow permissible to forget all societal mores and act like yahoos. Public property, be it a state park or an interstate highway, exists as a service we provide ourselves. We, the taxpayers, fund these public facilities with the common goal of all being able to access the outdoors or drive across the country. We, the taxpayers, are responsible for responsible use of such facilities. It’s a sad day when the minute our collective backs (in the form of park personnel) are turned some people feel the need or desire to rampage through our mutual property.
Letters to the editor: We really do love them The primary reason I and my coworkers write personal columns (they’re not editorials) for this page is to encourage readers to respond. It’s not easy. It seems no matter how outlandish we get, the feedback is minimal. Sometimes the responses we do get are bizarre. Generally the reactions fall into two categories. The first is totally disheartening. You research and write your guts out about a topic of interest and receive an email that says “in paragraph six you used ‘upon’ instead of ‘on.’ Is English your native language? Who proofreads this rag?” Yikes. No mention of what the writer might have thought about the topic. Just kvetching. Riding high in April, shot down in May. That’s life, I supposed. The second most common response tends to take the “who cares about your opinion” approach. Mind you, these writers never bother to tell us their opinion, they sim-
PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor
ply want us to know that we are not entitled to ours. For instance, a column I wrote recently about the bane of fireworks drew a one-sentence response from an individual who accused me of advocating a “nanny state.” That’s a term used to try to put writers who believe sometimes people need to be told what to do in their place. The place is usually under the jackboot of the person using the term. Actually, my plea to ban fireworks had nothing to do with the nanny state. You see, idiots who abuse fireworks cause buildings to burn down. Each time one catches fire, my tax dollars or yours (depending on where you live) are expended to pay salaries
for firefighters. Taxpayer-funded police and fire departments both got involved in Fargo over the July 4 holiday when a man was struck and killed by a mortar-style firework. So my column was more of a plea to eliminate one more thing taxpayers have to support with their hard-earned dollars. Quite different from the idea of a nanny state. Heck, it’s almost libertarian. What is it that stops you from expressing your viewpoint on this page? We do everything possible to make it simple for readers to write letters to the editor. We’ve tossed most of the rules out the window to allow more exchanges of opinions. We are thankful to the letter-writers who do participate, but many of them fall into the “endless political campaigning” category. Frankly, those letters leave me personally wanting to retch. Which proves that there is
no litmus test per se for letters to the editor. I’ll swallow hard and place them on a page, no matter the topic. We do ask that you write within the bounds of good taste and keep your thoughts short and succinct. Those of us who write these columns try to keep it short and sweet because we know readers have busy lives and don’t want to spend half a day reading an opinion column. You can use the electronic form for letters found on our website or you can simply email your letter. Written and typed submissions are also welcome, although both require they be keyed into our system, which can delay publication. We will continue to try to strike a nerve with our columns and hopefully one day you’ll read something that convinces you to either agree or disagree strongly enough to write in. We’re looking forward to hearing from you.

Minneapolis man suspected of as many as 13 burglaries arrested BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN A 50-year-old Minneapolis man suspected of as many as 13 burglaries of Bloomington office buildings was arrested after being spotted by a private security officer July 4. The suspect was arrested for a burglary that occurred at the Spectrum Commercial Services office, 8011 34th Ave. The security officer on duty spotted a male that appeared to match the description of a man described in a recent crime bulletin issued by the Bloomington Police Department walking in the south lower parking lot near a tunnel that leads to the 8011 building, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. When the security officer asked the male what he was doing, the suspect said he was looking for a hotel. The security officer contacted police and continued to follow the suspect until officers arrived. The first officer to respond was in an unmarked squad car and was not in uniform. The officer asked the suspect to

stop so he could speak with him. The suspect walked closer, pretending to talk on a cell phone. The cell phone was a flip phone that appeared to be closed as the suspect spoke into it, Stehlik said. After apprehending the suspect, the responding officer searched near where the suspect was located. As he entered the building, he noticed an open fire extinguisher box between an elevator and staircase. As the officer reached the fourth floor, he found two separate windows broken on two separate office suite doors. The private security officer had checked all floors on the building earlier in the day and found no damage. Bloomington police had been actively looking for the suspect in connection to a number of other burglaries prior to the Independence Day arrest, according to Stehlik The suspect had recently been released from prison after being sentenced for previous burglary charges. The investigation is ongoing, however, once charged, the suspect may face felony charges.

Feeling sleepy? A Brooklyn Park sleep specialist says common problems are treatable BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS In a society constantly on the go, often fueled by caffeine, it’s no surprise that people are tired. But sometimes the problem goes beyond simply not having the time to stay in bed long enough. Some people have difficulty sleeping when they go to bed. Others sleep eight hours and wake up feeling exhausted. Some have problems staying awake at work, during class or on the road. In a recently released report, the Centers for Disease Control said that in 2009 among 74,571 adults surveyed in 12 states, including Minnesota, about 38 percent reported unintentionally falling asleep during the day in the previous 30 days, and nearly 5 percent reported nodding off while driving in the previous 30 days. Dr. Michael Alter is a doctor of sleep medicine, internal medicine and pulmonary and critical care medicine. He practices at the Fairview Sleep Center that opened June 20 at 10000 Zane Ave. N., Brooklyn Park. It’s the sixth such center
Fairview operates in and around the Twin Cities. Alter says that in our 24-hour society with an aging population that is increasingly overweight, difficulty sleeping is a growing problem. Alter says sleep is important to a person’s overall well-being. If people aren’t getting sufficient, restorative sleep, it can affect many aspects of their lives, Alter says, and they may have a condition that needs medical attention. Jane Strub is the manager of Fairview’s Brooklyn Park sleep center, as well as its sleep center in Chisago City. “Sleep problems can lead to serious, even life-threatening health conditions, and recent research is showing us that sleep problems are even more prevalent than once believed,” she said. Untreated sleep disorders have been linked to other health problems including depression, high blood pressure and heart disease. Lack of sleep can also affect mood, memory, safety and effectiveness at work. MaryAnn Jindra, 57, of Lindstrom was treated for sleep apnea at Fairview’s sleep
center in Chisago City. She knows firsthand the damage that untreated sleep disorders can cause. “I probably had sleep apnea for 15-20 years, minimum, before I was forced to look for solutions,” she said. “I was so SLEEP: TO NEXT PAGE

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to May 31st receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Sleep FROM PREVIOUS PAGE exhausted all the time. I could not function at the level I wanted to function at work. The deep level of exhaustion had led to severe problems with depression. … My blood pressure was so low I was feeling faint a lot.” Eventually, every aspect of Jindra’s life was affected and, in desperation, she sought help.
Common problems According to Alter, obstructive sleep apnea is the most common condition he sees. Symptoms include snoring, excessive sleepiness, gasping at night and sleep that is nonrestorative — which means the sleeper wakes up feeling tired even after sleeping long enough. A person with sleep apnea momentarily stops breathing while sleeping. This wakes the sleeper and can cause gasping. In severe cases, this can happen 30 times an hour or more. Alter said that in some cases it has been observed to occur 100 times an hour. Apnea sufferers may fall asleep again immediately after waking and may not realize they keep waking up. But the result
is nonrestorative sleep. No matter how long they sleep, people with this condition often wake up feeling tired. To understand what’s happening, Alter says to imagine “trying to sleep in a room and somebody was setting off the alarm every 30 seconds.” Even if you fell asleep right away each time, after eight or even 12 hours you wouldn’t feel rested. Jindra knows from experience. “I tried sleeping more, but of course it didn’t do any good,” she said. Another common condition Alter sees is insomnia, which causes patients to have difficulty falling asleep. Alter says insomnia can sometimes be a complicated condition related to psychological factors. Other times patients are misdiagnosed with insomnia when the problem is actually simple. For example, some people are naturally “night owls,” and it’s difficult for them to fall asleep before a certain time of night. Once asleep, however, they sleep well. Alter says this becomes a problem when these people have commitments such as school or work which require them to get up before getting enough sleep.
Diagnosis and treatment When patients come into the sleep center, they have an evaluative checkup. Based SLEEP: TO PAGE 16

Uniform drive helps outfit scout for camp BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kris Hinderscheid of Hastings is the treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 534. Her family goes through a lot of uniforms. She and her husband have four sons who have all been involved in Boy Scouts or Cub Scouts. The boys outgrow uniforms quickly. Kris’s husband also volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster and must wear a uniform. When Kris’s oldest son, 13-year-old Kalvin, was nominated by his scoutmaster to attend the exclusive, week-long Grey Wolf Leadership Camp in Wisconsin this year, he needed to be outfitted with a full uniform first. “We wanted to make sure he had everything he needed,” she said. Hinderscheid believes the uniform is an important part of the Scouting experience. “When the boys wear the uniform, they should be wearing it with pride,” she said. Kalvin thinks the uniform is an identifying mark for Scouts and it lets others know “that guy’s in Scouts.” Hinderscheid was willing to invest in the full outfit for Kalvin, which includes shirts, a neckerchief, shorts, pants, socks and headgear. But buying everything new would have placed some financial pressure on the single-income household. Hinderscheid turned to the Boy Scouts Northern Star Council uniform exchange program. The exchange program is available twice a month and allows scouts to come to the office in Golden Valley and find used uniforms for free with a suggested donation if the family feels able to give. The program is supported largely by uniform donations collected during the Scouting for Uniforms campaign held by the Northern Star Council and Pilgrim Cleaners during the month of July.
Hinderscheid reached out to other members of Troop 534 and collected a list of “orders” of items needed by scouts in the area. Then three families made the trek to visit the exchange and fill as many orders as they could. Kalvin found everything he needed, and Hinderscheid estimates that about 12 other scouts in the troop also received needed pieces for their uniforms. “It’s a great program,” Hinderscheid said. “It’s a blessing for many people.” She estimates that paying the suggested donations for uniforms cost her less than an eighth of the price for new uniforms. “For us to be able to outfit our son to have the privilege to go to camp was huge,” she said. Hinderscheid said when her boys are done with a uniform, they pass it on to others. She appreciates how the exchange program makes it easy to share uniforms with those who need them. “I just think that it gives you an opportunity to give back, and it makes it very affordable for families, especially in this economy,” she said. “And there’s no sense in wasting items … someone should be able to reuse them.” It’s especially easy to donate uniforms during the month of July. Uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422.
Kalvin Hinderscheid, 13, of Hastings, stands in full Boy Scout uniform next to his mother Kris. Kalvin was able to get his entire uniform through a uniform exchange program that is supported by donations. During July it is especially easy to donate by dropping off used uniforms at any Pilgrim Cleaners location. (Submitted photo)

Sleep FROM PAGE 14 on a thorough questionnaire and a conversation with the patient, Alter or another specialist tries to understand what type of problem is occurring and its severity. Then the physician determines whether a sleep study is necessary. A sleep study involves staying at the clinic overnight (or during the day for workers on night shifts). During the study, technicians monitor functions such as brain activity, movement, breathing and heart rate. The data collected is used to create a polysomnogram, known as a PSG. It’s a map of what is happening while a patient is in bed. It shows when the person falls asleep, when sleep is interrupted, when the person transitions between different phases of sleep and more. The doctor uses the PSG to help determine a final diagnosis. Treatment options vary widely depending on the diagnosis. A common treatment for those with severe sleep apnea is a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) mask. The mask uses air pressure to keep passageways at the back of the mouth open. The
patient does the breathing, but the pressure allows it to happen easily. Jindra received a CPAP mask to treat her apnea. She said it was a “major adjustment to sleep with it on. But she thinks it was worth it. “Your life does not change the very next day, she said. “It might be a couple weeks. It might be a couple months. But I really have the energy level I had in my thirties. For patients with mild apnea, a customized dental appliance is a common treatment. The dental appliance also keeps the airway open to make breathing easier. Weight loss can also help reduce apnea symptoms. For other conditions, treatment can include simple lifestyle changes, such as not lying in bed when it’s not time to sleep, or more complex treatment, such as referral to a psychiatrist.
Who should be seen It can be difficult for people to know for sure if they have a sleeping disorder. But Alter says there are signals that can let people know they should see a doctor. He says if you feel sleep is not restorative or if you complain a lot about sleep, you should probably be seen. Trouble staying awake during the day is another
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
potential sign of a sleep disorder. Alter says anyone who has problems staying awake while driving should definitely see a doctor. Another gauge of potential sleeping problems is feedback from someone who is around you while you sleep. If you’re told that you quit breathing, that you gasp, that you constantly move or that you just seem not to sleep well, you should consult a physician. Jindra encourages people not to make the same mistake she did, living with a problem 10 or 20 years before consulting a physician. “I just want to be positive about it and encourage people to talk to their family doctors, she said. It was Jindra’s family doctor who referred her to a sleep center for care and evaluation. Good news is that, according to Alter, most insurance companies will cover an evaluative visit to a sleep center. Whether insurance covers treatment depends on the diagnosis. Alter says most insurance companies will cover treatment for conditions such as apnea. But if the doctor determines that you snore but don’t have apnea, insurance won’t generally cover treatment. That’s considered a cosmetic problem. Info: fairview.org/sleep.

In 1972, they flew an Air Force F-4 that shot down a MiG-21 over North Vietnam, and years later Cherry found not only the F4 they flew, but the pilot they shot down over Vietnam, Jasperson said, and they have since become friends. And, on Saturday, July 16, they will be seated among the public for the “US Bank Evening with Eagles” dinner event at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest, which is expected to sell out before the weekend, Jasperson said. Of course, picturing the aviators’ stories may be easier after seeing some of the aircrafts they flew. Of the approximately 40 aircraft expected, a couple of highlights will include the Tuskegee Airmen’s plane, the P-51-C Mustang and the “Yankee Lady,” a B-17 Bomber from the Yankee Air Museum in Michigan. Guests can buy a ticket to ride in either plane during the show, said Event Director Greg Kaminski. “That’s a pretty big deal,” he said. A B-24 Bomber, the more modern A10 Warthog, a biplane, a pair of helicopters, training jets and others will also be at the show. About half of the 40 aircraft will take to the air, Kaminski estimated,

club that will meet in the shop. The coffee shop is situated next to long-standing Bloomington businesses Scoops Ice Cream and Zeke’s Place, a bar and grill-style restaurant, a location Irvin had hoped for since she started planning to open her own business nearly two years ago. The location, most recently the site of a health food distribution center, was once the home of a bank with a drive-thru window, a feature West Side Perk now utilizes to serve customers who may be too busy to take a seat inside. About 50 percent of the shop’s customers use the drive-thru, according to Irvin. West Side Perk also hopes to set themselves apart with the quality of their product, according to Scott Nelson, the store supervisor and inhouse coffee expert. “We grind everything here. Everything comes to us whole bean,
fresh from local roasters. Usually when we get them, the beans have only been sitting around for a day. We get them really fresh,” said Nelson. West Side Perk uses only Arabica coffee beans, one of the premier coffee beans on the market. To ensure each drink they serve is fresh, the shop never uses any ground coffee beans that are more than three hours old, according to Nelson. West Side Perk attempts to do everything locally, including working with Minneapolis-based coffee bean suppliers Roastery 7 and True Stone Coffee Roasters. Despite a tough economy, Irvin seems optimistic about the future. “According to our sales reports, it gets just a little bit better each
day,” said Irvin. “I see business doing a lot better. I’m not afraid that we are going to be forgotten. Everyday I see more people and new people.” Along with traditional coffee, West Side Perk offers lattés and cappuccinos, smoothies and homemade soups, as well as a variety of other drinks, lunch and breakfast foods. Bloomington natives Mary MacLaughlin and Dale Lynch visited West Side Perk for the first time Wednesday, July 6. “I like the ambience and I like the service,” Lynch said, who has lived in Bloomington since 1959. “We haven’t had a chance to explore all the things but we just had some good rice chicken soup.” Lynch reminisced about the changes that had taken place in the shopping center West Side Perk now calls home. “This space from here to the Chinese place [Don Ho’s] was a bank. We had a super market right by,” Lynch said. “I’m glad to see this place here. I hope this area starts to reawaken.”
France FROM PAGE 1 county transportation department, said initially he planned to open bids for the project in midJuly, but is no longer sure when that will happen. “We’re in limbo,” he said. “We need the MnDOT civil rights office to approve some of the subcontracting, Equal Employment Opportun ity and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises requirements.” The project, which would include repairing and replacing concrete panels in the approximately 2-mile stretch, is covered by $480,000 in federal funds and $220,000 in County State Aid funds. Hennepin County received about $3.6 million in federal funds as

part of $95 million total given to MnDOT. The county transportation department identified France Avenue South as a segment of concrete pavement that could see a significant extension in useful life with rehabilitation. In addition to concrete repair, Hanson said the project would involve resealing of joints on the entire road segment. He anticipates one lane to be closed in each direction for the majority of the project, but at times, France Avenue South would be limited to one lane in each direction. He estimates the work would take three months to complete. “If the state comes back to work and we can get the necessary approvals, we could possibly start it yet this year,” Hanson said.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington will be the focal point of slowpitch softball enthusiasts July 14-17. The 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Tournament will be bigger and better than ever, according to director Jeff Barnes. The Bloomington native has either played in or managed the mid-summer softball extravaganza for much of its history. This edition of the Firemen’s tourney has attracted 160 men’s, women’s and corec teams from all over the state and country. More than 20,000 fans, players and tournament volunteers are expected to attend the four-day event headquartered at Valley View Park. “Our tournament is one of the largest of its kind in the state and the Upper Midwest,” said Barnes, who has directed the event since 1976. “There is a 300-team tournament headquartered in Bismarck, N.D. “But that tournament is spread out on fields over a regional area instead of being located like we are in one city – Bloomington. Our tournament is a summer reunion for players and spectators. We have fans that actually fly in to the Twin Cities to attend our event each year.” The 160-team field includes Class A through Class D slowpitch softball teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada as well as squads from across the Twin Cities metro area and outstate Minnesota. Many teams represent Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Richfield, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Minnetonka, Burnsville, Rosemount, Apple Valley and Lakeville. Two all-star charity games kick off the Firemen’s tournament Thursday, July 14, at Valley View Park in Bloomington. The opening all-star matchup pits the Bloomington Police against the Bloomington Firefighters at 6:30 p.m. on Red Haddox Field. The Bloomington Police won last year’s all-star game. USA Cup back for 27th year Soccer extravaganza runs July 15-23 at National Sports Center BY NICK CLARK • SUN NEWSPAPERS The numbers, as they are every year with the Schwan’s USA Cup, are staggering. The annual extravaganza will once again be the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. It begins Friday, July 15, at the National Sports Center in Blaine. This year, 942 teams have registered – 25 more than a year ago – in a field that includes teams from 17 countries, 20 states and 59 Minnesota communities. Organizers already avoided what could have been a crippling hurdle. The NSC is a state facility but is operated by a non-profit foundation, meaning it is able to stay open during the government shutdown. Good thing, too. The economic impact is expected to be more than $20 million during the 2011 tournament. “It brings in money to the state,” said USA Cup media director Barclay Kruse. “There is no arguing that.” This will be 27th year of the event. As always, the soccer is the highlight. The highest level will be in two Puma vElite tournaments. Eight elite boys teams from across the country will compete for a trip to Portugal to train with Sporting Lisbon FC, while seven elite girls clubs play for an expenses-paid trip to the Women’s Professional Soccer championship game. This year is the first for the girls vElite tournament. With what’s at stake, teams in both vElite tournaments are expected to play for keeps. “It won’t be a beauty contest,” Kruse said. “They’ll be playing hard, because they’ll want those trips. As far as prizes go, I can’t imagine anything better for these kids.” The vElite Tournament will run during the USA Cup’s weekend tournament July 15-17. The weeklong event begins Monday, July 18, with the official kickoff coming during the opening ceremonies Tuesday, July 19. To spice up the tournament welcome, the USA Cup will have a huge viewing screen at midfield of the main stadium. A production company will oversee the ceremony, which will also include musical USA: TO NEXT PAGE

Seven members of last season’s Jefferson varsity volleyball team just competed in the AAU national championships in Orlando, Fla., and Junior Olympic nationals in Atlanta, Ga. Haley Bodway and Emily Schadow were members of the Northern Lights 17-1 club team that placed third in the Open Division at the AAU nationals. The Northern Lights squad reached the final rounds of the Junior Olympics tournament before being eliminated. Both Bodway and Schadow will be seniors for the Jaguars this fall. Two other seniors-to-be, Kelley Wollak and Eliza Zachary, played for the Northern Lights 17-2 club team. Northern Lights competed at the club level at the AAU nationals and finished first. Wollak was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Wollak and Zachary helped their team place second in the Junior Olympic Championships. Ashley Peper, who will be a senior, played on the Northern Lights 17 Black team that placed 17th in the Club Division at the AAU nationals. Cassie Santiago, who will be a junior, was a member of the Northern Lights 16-2 team that finished fifth in the Club Division at the AAU tourney and 27th in the National Division at the Junior Olympics. Softball FROM PAGE 22 Valley View beginning at 8 a.m. Championship games are 3, 4 and 6 p.m. There will be six tournament brackets – men’s Upper (32 teams), men’s Tier II (40 teams), men’s Tier III (36 teams), women’s Tier II (12 teams), women’s Tier III (16 teams) and co-rec (24 teams). “Many teams use our tournament to prepare for postseason state and national competition,” said Barnes. “We work hard to maintain competitive balance in each of our brackets. “We have a good mixture of experienced and young teams. And many of those younger squads want to get into our competitive upper brackets.” All proceeds from the
Firemen’s tournament are donated to youth organizations that provide volunteer assistance during the fourday event. “We are grateful for the 350 volunteers who help make this tournament work,” said Barnes. “Bloomington Knights of Columbus is our main sponsor, but we have many other local organizations assisting us as well.” Among those Bloomington organizations (and the services they provide) are: Kennedy choir (food), St. Bonaventure Church and Kennedy track (pop), Bloomington Retired Firefighters (popcorn), Knights of Columbus (adult beverages), Lions Club (sweet corn), Kennedy wrestling (labor, water, sports drinks), Bloomington hockey Mites (cleanup) and Bloomington Gold Legion baseball (field maintenance).

The ceremony is free and open to the public. “You don’t have to be participating in the USA Cup to get into the opening ceremony,” Kruse said. “Anybody can come.” That includes those from Uganda, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Both have teams in the
USA Cup for the first time, pushing the total number of countries to participate over the years to 64 – or 65, depending on how you keep score. “If you want to be technical, U.S. Virgin Islands is not a country,” Kruse said, “but it’s not a state either, so we’ll count it.”
