BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A proposal to move and expand the driving range at Hyland Greens Golf Course would result in the demise of the Inside 9 course. City officials think it’s a necessity. Youth athletic association officials think it would create a hardship for their program. The Bloomington City Council will have the final say in the matter, a decision that could come during its July 25 meeting. Rick Sitek, the city’s 23-year golf manager who oversees the operation of the city’s Dwan Golf Course as well as Hyland Greens, detailed the proposal during the council’s July 11 meeting.

Fat Lorenzo’s of Minneapolis is serving in Bloomington, too BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS There’s no playbook for opening a second restaurant, but if there were, it still probably wouldn’t have been of much benefit for the owners of a Bloomington restaurant. Although it comes nearly a year after the fact, Fat Lorenzo’s II of Bloomington is just now getting around to having a grand opening. Owner Scott Siegel calls it the best dang restaurant in the worst dang location. Compared to his flagship location, he’s not exaggerating.
Fat Lorenzo’s of Bloomington is an extension of the popular Italian restaurant and pizza parlor in south Minneapolis. Even those who have never eaten there know of Fat Lorenzo’s, with colorful murals outside its Minneapolis restaurant, just north of Highway 62, where Cedar Avenue dumps into Highway 77. Travel north into Minneapolis via Cedar and it’s tough to miss. The Bloomington location, however, is a different story. Siegel’s new restaurant is hard to find, and he knew that when he agreed to take over the empty kitchen inside the Everett McClay VFW Post 1296 building on 84th Street. The building is behind Cub Foods on Lyndale, and accessible by navigating through the Cub lot. FAT’S: TO NEXT PAGE

Man dies following fiery freeway crash Crash occurred the same night of man’s reported confrontation with ex-girlfriend BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS A 23-year-old Bloomington man died days after a fiery motor vehicle crash in Minnetonka, a crash that occurred hours after an altercation with an ex-girlfriend at a Bloomington apartment. Nathaniel Cornely died on his birthday, July 11, four days after Bloomington police were called to the apartment he shared with his former girlfriend, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. Police were called at 8:52 p.m. July 7 to the apartment complex on the 150 block of West 96th Street. The 21-yearold woman and a 37-year-old man from Minneapolis had gone to the apartment to gather her possessions,
Stehlik explained. Cornely and the Minneapolis man had reportedly argued at the apartment. When the woman and her friend were preparing to leave, they saw Cornely pull his car out of a garage and drive toward them at a high rate of speed, hitting the rear of the Minneapolis man’s truck. The man got out of the car while the woman stayed inside. Cornely drove away from the incident, but turned around and drove back toward the truck, this time swerving at the last minute, Stehlik said. While police were taking statements at the scene, the Minneapolis man received a phone call from his roommate, telling him the porch of their house had been set on fire, Stehlik noted. Later that night, Bloomington police learned that Cornely had been pulled from his vehicle by passersby following a fiery crash on Interstate 394 in Minnetonka. COPS: TO PAGE 8

Dropping a line to the far side of the world I collect postcards. It’s a habit my friends and family have unwittingly enabled for years by sending me cards from around the country and an addiction I do not plan to give up any time soon. As a bit of a connoisseur of the deltiologist (postcard collecting) community, I regularly peruse postcard-collecting websites to keep up on the latest trends, look at galleries of really interesting collections and generally waste time in one of my favorite ways. So I was shocked the other day to discover an organization that will not only provide you with the address of someone anywhere in the world who might like to get a postcard from you, but will give your address to card writers around the globe, as well. Shocked, I tell you. And ridiculously enthused. I signed

up right away. On a rainy afternoon, I went to the post office to drop my first postcard in the mail. Because it was traveling roughly 4,520 miles to Latvia — yes, Latvia — I wanted to double check that I had affixed enough postage. The postal worker checked my card, assured me the stamps I’d placed on the card were sufficient and promptly stood there reading what I’d written to my new Latvian friend. Strange, I didn’t recall saying, “Good morning, is this enough postage? Oh, and if you’re feeling bored, why don’t
you read this postcard I’m sending. It’s good stuff, I promise. Kisses!” But that’s perfectly all right. See, that’s what I love about postcards: the public intimacy. Each card sent has a message written on it, destined for a single individual, but can be read by a great many people before it ever reaches that person. On a recent trip to Ireland, I dragged my very understanding wife with me to an archeology museum near Dingle in County Kerry. The museum was decidedly unstimulating, but the small box of antique postcards — all of them circulated — in the gift shop? Hmmm, I don’t know. How do you think Robert Ballard felt when he realized he found Titanic? It was a box of messages, some of them more than 100 years old, giving me a glimpse of those personal yet
Let’s stop talking about the achievement gap Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) is often quoted saying: "Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it." I would like to borrow his sentiment and apply it to another issue that will soon be slapping us in the face once again as a new school year rolls around. It’s the achievement gap. You’ve no doubt heard of it. Everyone talks about it, but nobody does anything about it. The achievement gap is described as the difference in scoring on standardized tests between students of color and white students. In almost all instances both sets of students are exposed to the same educational process and content. One group excels. The other fails. I should clarify here that some districts have done something
PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor about it but very few have made more than cursory inroads. Pieces of the puzzle are beginning to come together, though. In many of the suburban school districts we cover, the achievement gap numbers are among the worst in Minnesota and are even considered disturbing when compared to national stats. A number of assumptions have been drawn. Those aforementioned districts are designed for and by white affluent administrators, teachers and board members who aren’t particularly concerned about students of color. If they can’t succeed here,
they should go elsewhere. Others who study the issue say the discrimination isn’t intentional but because white administrators, teachers and board members don’t understand the Black experience, as an example, they make judgments that are skewed without knowing it. Another group claims students of color simply aren’t as intelligent as white students, which seems terribly racist on its face. You can find quite a bit about the “intelligence gene” research online. As difficult as it is to comprehend the reasons for the disparity in scores, it is even more incomprehensible that we can’t achieve comprehensive solutions. To paraphrase a famous sayGAP: TO NEXT PAGE
wide-open messages. Too bad they were so stinkin’ expensive. I’ve always wanted to ask to a simple question of those postal workers that read postcards before they are delivered: Did you get it? Do the postcards you read make sense to you? I can’t say that I recall ever running across someone else’s mail in that way. I wonder what it’s like. I guess this may be just a protracted daydream. Maybe no one cares about the personal lives of people they’ve never met. But that sure won’t stop me from sending postcards to strangers around the world and wondering. Shoot me a postcard! D. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR But will it work? To the editor: I am perplexed about the “traffic circle” installation at Utah Road and 101st Street. The recently installed circle has a very high curb that city trucks and plows will need to negotiate, unlike a true roundabout. Since it’s the first and only traffic circle in Bloomington I know that it is an experiment. I will need to develop my patience to see what the result of this experiment is. Thank you. Gap FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ing from the ‘60s, “they can send a man to the moon but they can’t eliminate the achievement gap.” As I see it, at the heart of the issue is the fact that school districts view the achievement gap as an issue they must wrestle to the ground alone. It’s seldom spoken of as a community-wide issue. Remember “it takes a village to educate a child?” It does. I have yet to see an effective model in
which each aspect of the community – from its churches, mosques and synagogues to its municipal government to its service clubs – is engaged to do battle against the achievement gap. We have had a war on poverty, a war on drugs, a war on terrorism. When are we going to launch the war on the achievement gap? If the achievement gap is allowed to continue to exist, the future of our state and nation are at risk. Either we take comprehensive action or we talk the issue to death. The view from here suggests it’s time to pay attention rather than pay lip service.

A basement fire in Bloomington was contained to one room, but the incident caused smoke damage throughout the house. Basement fires are always problematic because of access issues, according to Bloomington Fire Chief Ulie Seal. The July 14 incident on the 10400 block of Ewing Road was no different, Seal said. The homeowners left their residence for a short time and returned to find the fire in their basement, Seal explained. There was nothing suspicious about the fire, but its cause was not immediately known, he noted. Due to the excessive heat, the past week has been challenging for firefighters responding to calls, Seal said. The fire department rotates firefighters at incident scenes in times of high heat, and cold drinking water is ready for dispensing at incident scenes, he explained. The department can also call in special trailers from other departments in the county that provide relief from the heat at incident scenes, he added.

Bloomington man walks 50 miles in a day Bruce Warner raises money for nonprofit group BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Braving a painful shin splint in his right leg by mile 40, one determined Bloomington man persevered to walk 50 miles in a single day, raising more than $3,000 for a local nonprofit organization. Bruce Warner celebrated his 50th birthday in an unusual way Saturday, July 9 — by waking up in the middle of the night and beginning a grueling 50-mile walk around Hyland Lake Park in Bloomington at 2 a.m. Warner, who says he had the idea of walking 50 miles for his 50th birthday in the back of his mind for some time, combined his goal with philanthropy by partnering with local nonprofit organization Bridging Hearts. Bridging Heats is a nonprofit organization and online social network, designed to connect young adults with learning disabilities and other setbacks in an effort to enrich their social lives. “That organization is just changing lives,” Warner said, as he began loop nine of the ten 5-mile loops he would walk
throughout the day. “It is amazing some of the stories from the members — young adults for the first time in their lives having friends over to the house — it’s things like that a lot of us just take for granted.” Warner, who started training for his walk in January, began collecting pledges early; something he says served as extra motivation to go through with his goal. “Once people started pledging me x amount per mile, I said, ‘Okay, I’ve got to do it now, because it’s costing Bridging Hearts if I don’t,’” Warner said. Bridging Hearts was founded by Denise Martin in 2006 and was started with her own investment. Martin started the organization to help her own daughter, Natalie, who has learning disabilities, gain a richer social experience. Though Bridging Hearts began as a one-woman operation, it wasn’t long before Martin had to think about expanding. The organization became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2009. Martin seemed impressed by Warner’s drive and appreciative of his contributions. “It’s very impressive — to do in one day — especially in July,” Martin said, “It’s unbelievable.” Warner’s 50-mile walk is the young nonprofit organization’s first fundraiser. The
money raised by his walk will help renovate the organization’s website, a vital aspect of Bridging Hearts, according to Martin. “We have an outdated website. It was put together about five years ago and it is so costly, because we have an interactive site,” Martin said. “I was telling the board, and they were shocked, it can be from $5,000 and $20,000 to redo. The site is out of date, and the information is wrong.” The group’s website is the main way its 46 members are able to connect with each other. Money raised during the walk will also go to fund the nonprofit’s events, which include miniature golf, concerts and other ways for its members to get together and enjoy each other’s company, said Martin. Many of Bridging Heart’s members are vulnerable adults who may not be able to live by themselves or provide their own transportation. However, members generally do not qualify for any government assistance due to the nature of their disabilities, according to Martin. “There are other groups that are out there for folks who have fewer skills that have all paid staff, and they come with their staff or someone else who can support
them. It is all planned out and activities are done that way, usually through the community ed systems, but a lot of these people don’t fit in with that group,” said Pat Gray, a social worker involved with the organization. “Those activities are set up and plentiful, but this group kind of falls through the cracks. It’s a niche group.” Most of Bridging Heart’s volunteers, including Warner, became involved because they knew a young adult facing the challenges of learning and developmental abilities. Many of the nonprofit’s members, as well as volunteers first heard about Bridging Hearts after being referred to the group by friends or family. Warner first introduced Tammy Reynolds, whose brother has learning disabilities, to the group. She now volunteers with Bridging Hearts and regularly attends their events. “I’ve always thought that people should have to volunteer some of their time to something that means something to them or else you won’t stick to it. I mean everyone is busy, but when you are doing something that you actually enjoy, it doesn’t feel that way,” said Reynolds. Info: bridginghearts.org

Who’s getting paid? BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Last week, when Gov. Mark Dayton offered to accept Republican lawmaker’s June 30 budget proposal, with new conditions, it appeared the two-week government shutdown would come to an end. During the shutdown, with thousands of state employees out of work since Dayton and legislators did not agree on a 2011-13 budget by the June 30 deadline, the issue of elected officials receiving pay or not surfaced. In the House of Representatives, legislators who declined payment during the shutdown can choose to get paid retroactively once the shutdown is over, according to Greg Crowe, co-controller for the House. But senators will not have the option of receiving retroactive pay, according to Mary Ferguson with the Office of the Secretary of Senate. For legislators representing Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden Prairie, things were pretty split.
All of the representatives, except one, deferred their pay and most planned on not taking retroactive payments after the shutdown. All four of the senators kept their pay. Of course, it’s not always that cut and dry. For those who took pay, some throughout the House and Senate have said they will donate their checks to local charity. Legislators can also get paid for meetings they attend, known as per diem pay. In both the House and Senate, per diem payments were suspended for all legislators during the shutdown. After attempting to reach all legislators representing the four cities of Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden Prairie by phone and most cases email as well, several indicated their intentions regarding retroactive payments and why they did or did not accept payments. Not all could be reached, however. Here’s the breakdown for legislators representing the four cities:
Area legislators face tough questions following the state shutdown: Did they take payments? Will they seek repayment after the shutdown?
Legislators who received payments during the shutdown • Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41, Edina In an email, Michel said he has not taken per diem pay since the end of the regular legislative session May 23. “As deputy majority leader in the Senate, and part of the legislative leadership team negotiating with Governor Dayton, I continue to receive the legislative salary of $31,000 per year,” Michel said in an email Wednesday, July 13. • Sen. Ken Kelash, D-63, Bloomington and Richfield Kelash did accept pay because he didn’t notify the proper Senate office in time, he said. He’ll most likely give his pay during the session to a charity in his district, he said. “It’s a symbolic thing, and in the end it wouldn’t matter if we were being paid a little bit of money … or an outrageous amount of money … ” he said.
• Rep. Kirk Stensrud, 42A, Eden Prairie; Sen. Dan Hall, R-40, Bloomington; and Sen. David Hann, R-42, Eden Prairie, did accept pay during the shutdown and could not be reached.
Legislators who delayed payments • Rep. Ann Lenczewski, D-40B, Bloomington Lenczewski said she does not plan on taking retroactive pay after the shutdown. • Rep. Keith Downey, R-41A, Edina “As a legislator, I thought it was important for me to share equally in the financial impact that other state employees were also going to experience,” he said. “So, my intention is to share in equal measure, if you will, the same kind of impact in my own compensation that the average state worker would experience.” That includes back pay. If state workers receive it, he would seek the PAY: TO NEXT PAGE

Pat Mazorol, R-41B, Bloomington and Edina In emails, Mazorol said he did not accept pay during the shutdown and does not intend to receive retroactive pay. • Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-42B, Eden Prairie Loon said when she inquired about not receiving pay during the shutdown, she had to write a personalized note since that wasn’t an option on the payment form.
“I basically said I want to be treated the same as government employees,” she said. But even if lawmakers decide to give retroactive payments to state workers, she does not intend to take it. She said she normally doesn’t take per diem pay outside of a regular session, either. • Rep. Linda Slocum, D-63B, Bloomington and Richfield Slocum delayed her payment and intends to donate it to Cornerstone, a domestic abuse prevention group. • Rep. Paul Thissen, D-63A, Richfield did not accept pay during the shutdown, but he could not be reached. Legislative salary is $31,140 per year. Legislators are paid monthly, which equals approximately $2,595.

Works FROM PAGE 2 tech company, Schatz began channeling her energy into what would eventually become a full-time, not-for-profit museum providing a hands-on experience for children. The Works, which traces its roots to 1995, is leaving its home of several years, the Edina Community Center, and moving to Bloomington. The Works will remain in Edina through Sept. 3 before beginning its move to a former office building near 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue South in Bloomington. The museum is expected to open at its new location in November. What started in 1995 as a temporary exhibit in the Bell Museum at the University of Minnesota is now a full-time operation. The museum offers hands-on exhibits for visitors and provides engineering education to school groups throughout the year. Visitors to The Works can program robots, build giant structures, make a racecar, play a harp with strings of laser lights and zip up a six-foot zipper. Every exhibit is interactive and designed to highlight how things work. The educational programs feature a variety of projects for students, such as building a catapult for launching marshmallows. By building the catapult, students learn how the structure works and

how design elements can be altered to change the end result, according to Kris Best, development director of The Works. With the increase in engineering education through STEM schools across Minnesota, traffic has increased at The Works, according to Schatz, president of the museum she founded. Four years ago, the state department of education changed the science requirements to include engineering at every grade level, starting with kindergarten. That change fueled interest in The Works, where its annual audience grew from 10,000 students a year to more than 40,000. The organization has outgrown its space in Edina, space it has occupied since 2002. The search for a new location to house the museum ended in Bloomington with an empty office complex at 9740 Grand Ave. The new building will accommodate multiple busloads of children during the school year. Schatz expects to more than triple the number of students coming through its doors on an annual basis. To finance the expansion, The Works is conducting a multi-year capital campaign. The organization is funded by contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals as well as revenue from memberships, admissions, and workshop fees. The works will remain open at 5701 Normandale Road in Edina for the remainder of the summer. It is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Info: theworks.org.

Right Way Painting Solutions Golf After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

FROM PAGE 1 Hyland Greens is an anomaly among par-3 golf courses, according to Sitek. Par-3 golf courses typically consist of one ninehole course and other amenities, such as a driving range. Hyland Greens has two separate par-3 courses, the shorter Inside 9 and the longer Outside 9. The Inside 9 is used primarily by young golfers and a small portion of the senior golf population, Sitek said. It is also used by the Bloomington Athletic Association for its summer golf program, providing lessons and rounds of golf to young players in July and August. The program has maintained steady interest over the years, according to BAA representatives. The BAA program drives golfers to the Inside 9 for two months of the season, but the course is quiet during other times, according to Sitek. Families and young children don’t play a round of golf on the Inside 9 as frequently as they did years ago, Sitek said. With youth sports having structured programs, many children are busy with other athletic endeavors when the BAA program ends, he explained. The problem is that with diminished use of the Inside 9 at Hyland Greens the golf courses aren’t covering their annual operating costs. The courses are considered enterprise funds, so they need to cover their operating costs. Revenue generated by Dwan Golf Course has offset the deficit created by Hyland Greens in the past, but for the past three years the overall operating deficit of the golf courses has been covered by a capital fund for projects at the courses, a short-term solution, at best. An effort to attract more players to Hyland Greens by reducing the greens fees has had little effect on the net results. Increasing traffic at a reduced rate hasn’t generated additional revenue, according to Sitek. Operating costs have remained consistent through staff reductions at the courses, but the maintenance demands of 18 holes at each course don’t change. As revenue has dropped at Hyland Greens Sitek had determined the solution is to do away with the Inside 9, create a larger driving range with more appeal to golfers and reduce maintenance costs at Hyland Greens. Hyland Greens has 12 driving stations along Normandale Boulevard. Because of the need to protect passing vehicles from errant golf balls, netting along the roadway and the driving stations separates each driving station. The setup, however, necessitates hitting off a rubber mat, which discourages golfers who might otherwise be interested in using a driving range at Hyland Greens, according to Sitek. Golf FROM PREVIOUS PAGE A new driving range in the center of the property would allow golfers to hit off grass, and provide room for 36 driving stations, Sitek said. The tree-lined area would require no fencing, and would not be lit. Sitek noted there are no plans to turn over the driving range area along Normandale Boulevard for commercial development. To accommodate the BAA golf program new tees would be added closer to the pins of each hole on the Outside 9, offering students a short course option similar to the Inside 9, Sitek said. Leagues using the Outside 9 each summer would work to accommodate the BAA program, according to Sitek. Nobody should be squeezed out by moving the BAA program to the Outside 9, he noted. By combining users of the two courses, the Outside 9 may be
‘There’s absolutely a solution that can accommodate everyone, and I think it’s just a matter of finding it.’ -Bloomington City Councilmember Tim Busse filled on a day-to-day basis, something golfers don’t encounter now, Sitek said. Playing a round of golf without having to book a tee time is a luxury Hyland Greens provides, a luxury that golfers don’t have at most courses, Sitek said. Although he doesn’t foresee turning away individual golfers or leagues by eliminating the Inside 9, the potential necessity of having to schedule a tee time “might
inconvenience a few people,” Sitek admitted. The Outside 9 has been a consistent revenue generator for the past decade, Sitek said. At $14 per round, the course generated nearly $248,000 last season and has consistently generated comparable revenue, spiking to $266,600 in 2008 when greens fees were increased, he noted. Since 2000, when the Inside 9 generated $146,200, revenue has dropped for the short course. The course pulled in $124,800 in 2008 with the fee increase, but managed just $111,500 last season at $11 per round, according to Sitek. “There’s a solution here,” Councilmember Tim Busse said. “There’s absolutely a solution that can accommodate everyone, and I think it’s just a matter of finding it.” “We can’t keep going the way we are with Hyland,” City Manager Mark Bernhardson said, calling the proposal a longterm solution to save Hyland Greens as a golf facility.

A view from the sky The Farmers’ Airship, one of two zeppelins still flying, was in town last week for the Eden Prairie Air Expo. At left, the airship has two windows where passengers can stick their heads out the window to get the full experience. At right, the zeppelin differs from a blimp due to its framework. It’s 246-ft long, making it 15 feet longer than a Boeing 747. Bloomington resident Jean Hanson recent took a ride on the zeppelin, her first such experience.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
A Cub Scout Community: BY ALLY SERACKI • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Cub Scouting makes a difference in boys’ lives for many reasons; building their character and teaching them to work with others have been among the most important. Being part of Den 6, within Pack 66, is no exception. Pack 66 is sponsored by St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, St. Paul. Den 6 is relatively new and was formed through an effort of St. Bernard’s volunteers to reach out to their refugee community. For the den of 10 boys, all originally from Southeast Asia, not only has Cub Scouting helped them reinforce relationships but it has also helped them break down language barriers. For Den 6, specifically, Scouting has
reiterated a lot of what they learn in school, but through experience. “We trick kids to learn … through having fun,” said Vincent Haen, adult leader for Pack 66. Having the Scout uniforms connects them as well. “When they put on the uniforms, it makes them feel united,” Haen added.
Boys thankful for donations For Den 6, each family’s general economic situation is, as Haen would describe, “your typical refugee story.” What some children may take for granted, these boys cherish and appreciate. Haen described a time when the boys needed water boots for an outdoor activity. They
received boots, free of charge, that some boys might refuse to wear. But the Den 6 boys didn’t care if the boots were pink as long as their feet stayed dry. On a case-by-case basis, a Scouting office determines through a uniform exchange what donated uniforms to give out to dens for free and reduced prices. All of Den 6 is receiving discounted or free uniforms. Especially for the families who could not otherwise afford it, the assistance is a relief. Though many of the boys’ parents do not understand a lot about Cub Scouting, they realize it is getting their sons involved in something that is crucial. “Parents like getting them in the community,” Haen said. Supporting the uniform exchange pro-

Firemen’s tourney provides heated competition BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS The action was as heated as the high temperatures and humidity surrounding the 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Slowpitch Softball Tournament July 14-17 at Valley View and Dred Scott fields in Bloomington. A record 160 Class A through Class D teams participated in the double-elimination tourney. Temperatures reached the mid-90s and dew points were in the 70s. But the muggy conditions did not spoil the weekend for 20,000 players, spectators and volunteers who were part of the fourday event sponsored by the Bloomington Knights of
Columbus. The tournament attracted teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada. Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Eden Prairie, Richfield, Burnsville, Apple Valley and Lakeville supplied local entrants as well as outstate Minnesota towns. There were six tournament brackets in men’s, women’s and co-rec divisions. Tournament results will be published in next week’s Sun-Current.

Wade came through with nine points and seven rebounds during her team’s 49-34 win over the Philadelphia Bells in the championship game. She scored 18 points in a 54-40 semifinal victory over the Minnesota Stars. Editor’s note: Send nominations for Stars of the Week honors to sports editor Greg Kleven at gkleven@acnpapers.com. Bandits are bidding for Riverview League title Bloomington trails first-place Minnetonka by one game BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Bandits hope to recover from a mild hitting slump as the town team prepares for its final regular season games. The Bandits are 22-5 overall and second in the Riverview League standings with a 10-2 record. The Minnetonka Millers are first (10-1) and St. Louis Park is third (9-2). Bloomington has struggled at the plate in recent action losing to Minnetonka (6-0), Hopkins (1-0) and Eagan (11-1). “Our hitters have struggled lately, but hopefully we begin swinging the
bats better in the final weeks of the regular season,” said Bandits head coach George Walker. “Cliff Christopherson has been pitching great, but we haven’t hit well in the past two games he has pitched.” Bloomington was able to put together a solid hitting attack during a 10-0 victory over the Westside Bombers July 13. Scott Davis, Aaron Hoese and Mark Hanson had two hits each. Hanson provided two RBI. Davis, Sam Baltes, Alex Mack and Ryan Walker drove in one run each. The Bandits have been successful at the plate and on the mound for much of the 2011 season. Hoese leads Bloomington with a .436 batting average. Other top hitters are Baltes (.368), Kyle Bassamore (.362), Dusty Walker (.342), Davis (.333) and Mack (.333). Christopherson has been a work-
horse on the mound for the Bandits. He has a 7-3 record and 2.06 earned-run average. Christopherson has struck out 44 in 39 innings. Josh Gist has been another clutch pitcher for the Bandits. Gist has a 6-0 record with a 2.80 ERA and struck out 38 in 45 innings. Nick Cobb’s record is 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA. Bloomington will host St. Louis Park at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Haddox Field. The Bandits travel to South St. Paul to play Stockmen’s Irish at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, at McGuire Field. On Saturday, Bloomington meets Hopkins at 5:15 p.m. on Big Willow Field. The Bandits return home to play the Minneapolis Rocks at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 24. Bloomington hosts Eagan at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 26.

“All that glitters is not gold.” William Shakespeare wrote that more than 400 years ago and it remains apropos today, especially if you’re thinking about selling your gold jewelry and looking to turn a tidy profit in today’s red-hot gold market. But first, what do you know about selling jewelry? Where do you go? Who can you trust? That’s where Joe Beasy and Shane Maquire of The Gold Guys can help. They’ve designed a business model based on trust and fairness for selling precious metals in familiar mall-like settings. They’ll guide you through the selling process without any added pressure or expense in an open and relaxed atmosphere. The Gold Guys formula is simple; bring in your gold chains, bracelets, class rings, cuff links or any of your precious metal including silver. First, it’s tested for authenticity and karat content then weighed right in front of you and not carted off out of sight to a back room where you don’t know what’s going on. You’re quoted a price based on that morning’s London’s gold market and if you agree to sell, they will pay you on the spot. “You’re in control of your transaction from start to finish. We show you how it works. We make an offer. You accept and then you’re on your way,” Maguire said Based in Minnesota, The Gold Guys started three years ago and now have more than 11 stores in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Iowa. Their success has enabled them to expand globally and they’re currently in the process of opening a store in Bucharest, Romania. Entrepreneurs Beasy and Maguire met 20 years ago and have been business partners and friends ever since. With advice from colleagues about the bullish gold market and their entrepreneurial expertise they came up with their successful concept. “We’re idea guys,” Beasy said. “We saw the storm clouds on the horizon for the economy and thought how can we parlay the gold market into something. That’s how The Gold Guys was born.” The Gold Guys mission statement stresses
the importance of exemplary customer relationship and service and paying the highest price for your gold. As a result, has earned them the 2011 Gold Award from Top Ten Reviews, an online consumer review and rating service beating out several well-known national contenders for the honor. “We’re proud of our number one ranking with Top Ten Reviews. It’s like getting an academy award,” Beasy said. The Gold Guys offers mobile services for customers for whatever reason can’t make it to their stores, mail-in service and their popular gold parties. Gold parties are similar to other home sales parties but without the dreaded sales pitch and oftentimes, reluctant guests. The Gold Guys provides email invitations and wine and cheese for 10 or more guests. Invitees bring their jewelry to your home where a company representative does all the work. The host receives a percentage of the sales and the guests go home happy with money in their pockets. Gold parties are also a dynamite idea for fundraisers and charities. Charity work is a huge part of The Gold Guys commitment to the communities they serve. Beasy and Maguire are active with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure, the Hawaii food bank and many other notable charities. The Gold Guys have recently shot a pilot for a reality television similar to Pawn Stars on The History Channel and are currently shopping it around to the networks. This recent high-profile endeavor will take The Gold Guys to another level in their already successful business. With gold prices at an all-time high, now is the time to gather up your unwanted gold jewelry that’s been stashed away in your drawer, jewelry box or perhaps in an old sock long forgotten stuffed in the back of your closet. All you have to do is bring it in to The Gold Guys and you’ll walk away with some cash in your pocket or you can take Maguire’s advice, “Turn your old jewelry in and go out and buy gold coins, because now, you’re preserving your wealth. Gold is the real currency of the world.”
